ummer camp is a place where strong friendships are made. Ask a child about peers who went to camp last year or an adult about people who attended 25 years ago, and you’ll discover the same thing: Camp friends are some of their closest friends. American Camp Association research has found that 96 percent of campers say that camp helped them to make new friends and 94 percent say camp helped them to get to know campers who were different than themselves. But what exactly is it about camp that fosters these strong friendships? At camp, children have the freedom to be themselves without the pressures of school or the constraints of who they may be at home. When children go to school with the same children each year, they may be categorized as the shy or the studious child. Camp allows children to reinvent themselves and be who they want to be in a positive, supportive environment. The shy child may become the outgoing child, and the child who may be not be the athletic kid at home can become entrenched in sports at camp. Camp is an intentional community, one where children return each summer and are reunited at the place they love. Children eat together, participate in a myriad of activities together, share traditions, and sometimes live communally in bunks together. In this environment, children must learn to share, make decisions as a group, and respect each other. Through all these shared experiences, bonds are formed and friendships are made. The camp environment also allows for children to try new activities each day. And when they succeed together, whether it’s reaching the top of the climbing wall or going down the zip line, they connect over the experience. Camp is also a place with strong traditions and rituals; sharing in these as a community allows for friendships to grow. Camp professionals are trained in the management of group dynamics. Counselors are trained to empower children in their group so they feel comfortable and to encourage each child to contribute to the group, showing him that he is valued. This leads a child to feel confident in a group, making it easier to find friends. With so much technology in the lives of today’s children, camp gives children a respite from it all. The majority of summer camps ban most technology, including TV, smartphones, tablets, and computers. As a result, children engage with each other face to face, building stronger friendships. For parents worried about their child going to camp without a friend from home — don’t fret! Children make friends at camp quickly. Many camps even host pre-camp events for first-time campers so they can meet new friends before the first day. Other camps host spring festivals at and welcome all new families. Even without these events, children will meet friends on the first day of camp. Whether it’s on the bus to camp, at the first shared meal, or during icebreaker games, children will begin to open up to each other. In no time, you will be hearing about all the new friends your child is meeting at camp. If your child does decide to go to camp with a friend, speak with the camp director and let him know that these children are friends from home. Consider putting them in separate bunks. This will help your child to be more outgoing in making new friends instead of just defaulting to his friend from home. Don’t be surprised if your child comes home from camp with a new saying, “Living 10 for two.” What does it mean? Kids wait 10 months of the year for those two months at camp, where they get to be with their friends again. Options for every family. What do you mean the kids aren’t going to be in school all day? Three words that panic any working mother: “Day care failure.” Now that school’s out, it’s time to explore summer care plans so your career can stay on track and your family can, too. Traditionally, an ideal day care system has three options: a friend, a coworker, or a relative. There are also camps, programs, and certified day care centers. The more caregiver choices you have, the better!

Ask for help. The hardest thing to do is ask for help. The fact is that having the kids go to school was part of your day care system. Now is the time to put your pride away and ask a family member or friend for help. Maybe the in-laws can visit for a week to spend quality time with the kids?
As all the hard work you did to get day care in order during the academic year is thrown out the window, and you need another plan for three months. It is all about creating alternatives, options, and backup plans, as well as asking for help. You can’t take the mother out of the career woman or the career out of the mother, so use both to your advantage. Read on for five tips to help you have success at home and work during the summer.

Plan a “real” vacation. If you don’t plan it on your schedule, it won’t happen.You don’t have to spend a lot of money; camping or visiting relatives and friends is just fine. This could be a time for you to disconnect from the office for a few days. Put someone else in charge at the office, and it will be a good development opportunity for them.

Bring work home. If you can, try to leave work a little early and take advantage of the long summer days. You will need to make up for the time and work on a few things at home, but at least you get to spend an extra hour or two with the kids. Depending on their age, it is also a good time to introduce the concept of kids staying home alone for an hour.

Camps can be great! There are fabulous camp opportunities that the kids really enjoy. We are the ones that feel guilty and inadequate during separation. Coaster Craft
Create a Father’s Day gift with fabulous form and function.

This is an unique, affordable project that you and your child can make for Father’s Day. Any dad would love a personalized gift like this coaster set! Tiles (about 20 cents each) and most of the supplies may be found at Home Depot or Lowe’s. Parental supervision (or participation!) is recommended, and discretion should be used to determine age appropriateness.

•Computer printer •Computer paper (matte) •4-by-4-inch tiles •Foam paint brush •Scissors •Permanent glue •Gloss sealer (spray preferred) •Mod Podge Gloss glue •Cork discs

Instructions:
Step 1 - Choose one photo per tile. Print the photos of your choice, and cut each one into a 4-by-4-inch square. Step2 - Start with one tile. Apply a thin layer of Mod Podge Gloss glue onto the “shiny” side of it with the foam paint brush. Make sure your strokes are nice and even when applying the glue. Place your photo image side up on the tile, and gently press it down while smoothing out any bubbles. Allow the Mod Podge to dry for approximately five minutes.

Step 3 - Once the photo has dried, apply an additional coat of Mod Podge on top of the photo on the tile. Evenly distribute the Mod Podge, and let it completely dry. Step 4 - Apply your second and last coat of the Mod Podge once more on top of the photo. Once dry, the tile with photo should look like the image on the right.

Step 5 - Take your tile outdoors for adequate ventilation, and spray it with the gloss sealer to give it a nice finish. Steadily spray the coaster with the sealer until you are satisfied with the gloss finish. Let it dry for at least one hour. Step 6 - Complete the project by gluing the cork disc to the back of the tile with permanent glue. Step 7 - Let the tile air out for about a day. Repeat steps 1 through 6 for each tile you create. Carefully stack your coasters, tie a ribbon around them, and get ready to see Dad smile!

Childhood Concussions
An introduction to traumatic brain injuries.
B
elieve it or not, childhood is one of the highest risk periods for experiencing traumatic brain injury (TBI) from sports-related concussions, motor vehicle accidents, and falls. TBI is the leading cause of death and disability in children. There are at least 3.5 million new childhood TBI cases every year, and nearly 5.3 million Americans (2 percent of the population) are currently living with a TBI disability. The nearly 3,000 youth football leagues across the United States with approximately 600,000 players present just a small sampling of the kids that are at risk for TBI. This number does not include children who participate in soccer, lacrosse, baseball, and hockey. Fortunately, the majority of TBI in children is classified as “mild,” often termed a concussion. In this author’s opinion, however, the classification of “mild” can be misleading as the injury may lead to disabilities that are associated with a variety of longterm social, behavioral, and reasoning difficulties. Although most concussions resolve on their own within days to months, a small minority of patients will experience persistent symptoms. 16 I parentguide News I June 2014
Children and adolescents are not little adults. Children’s brains are continuously developing, which means an injury would affect them differently than it would an adult in the following important ways: •A child’s brain, because of its early growth, is large and heavy relative to other parts of the body. It is poorly stabilized by weak neck musculature and is often the leading contact point on impact. •A child’s face provides less protection because a child’s facial skeleton is relatively small. •A child’s brain is more susceptible to tearing of the white matter (i.e., the “wiring” of the brain). This shearing injury is currently thought to be the primary cause of a concussion. Hence the slogan: “Wire together, fire together. Out of sync, lose your link.” •Brain swelling is more common in children than in adults as a child’s brain fills up the entire skull and there is no room for additional blood or brain swelling.
•The skull of a child is thin and provides less protection for sports that do not use head gear (e.g., soccer, baseball). •A child’s nervous system is constantly evolving (through age 24 in males and 20 in females). Consequently, the effects of a head injury on the developing brain are likely to interfere with neurodevelopmental processes. •Young patients are more prone to the “second impact syndrome” (SIS). This syndrome is believed to occur when a second concussion, even one of lesser severity to the first, re-injures the previously healing brain and results in death or devastating injury.

What should a parent and coach look for in a concussion? Concussions remain a symptom-based diagnosis, and they can be difficult to diagnose clinically. Early warning signs include: headache, nausea and vomiting, blurred vision, balance problems, sensitivity to light and noise, memory problems, sleep disorders, and mood disorders. A loss of consciousness (LOC) is not necessary for the diagnosis of concussion. Indeed, only 10 percent of concussed individuals experience a LOC, with many incidents going unnoticed. However, a concussion typically does involve a period of short-term forgetfulness. Parents and coaches should be aware that athletes may minimize or fail to report their symptoms because of a strong desire to continue playing, or a belief that their symptoms
are mild enough to play through. Children who sustain a concussion are required to be removed from play or strenuous activity until clearance by a health care provider. TBI may be common, but it is also avoidable. To focus on prevention, parents should ensure children wear protective gear and play in a safe environment with heat and hydration precautions. If enrolled in supervised sports, children should have coaches that have been certified and can recognize possible TBI signs. Kids should continue playing outside and benefit from the rewards that playing team sports offer. That being said, everyone should understand the signs of a TBI injury, take proper steps to prevent them, and stop play immediately if a TBI may have occurred.

Is a
C-Section Right for You? For some pregnant women, the idea of scheduling a Caesarean section sounds convenient and practical. Compared with traditional labor and delivery, getting wheeled into a surgery room on a scheduled day seems like it would be less painful and more controlled — but is it? The truth is, while C-sections have benefits and can be necessary to protect the baby or the mother, they still carry significant risks. That’s why the decision to have one should be carefully weighed. How do you know if a C-section is right for you? Of what should you be aware beforehand? What exactly are the risks involved, and how can you best heal from one? Here’s a look at what you need to know about Caesarean deliveries.
What determines the need for a C-section?
The main thing to keep in mind with C-sections is that they exist is to protect mothers and babies. When complications arise, a C-section provides a way to intervene surgically to protect them both. According to MayoClinic.org, “A C-section might be planned ahead of time if you develop pregnancy complications or you’ve had a previous C-section and aren’t considering vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC). Often, however, the need for a first-time C-section doesn’t become obvious until labor is under way.” When a mother has health conditions like an unstable heart disease or high blood pressure, or when a baby has health concerns such as fluid on the brain, a C-section may be scheduled before labor ever starts. But in other cases, a C-section may become necessary when labor has already started for the following reasons:

Stalled labor. When a mother’s cervix isn’t opening properly despite hours of labor or when a baby is too big to fit through the birth canal, labor is stalled and a C-section may be needed. Breech birth. When the baby is in an abnormal presentation like feet first or shoulder first, a C-section may be necessary.
Baby is in danger. During labor, if the baby’s heartbeat changes significantly or a doctor is concerned about the baby’s oxygen supply, a C-section offers a way to get the baby out quickly without prolonged health damage.
Problems with the placenta or the umbilical cord. Some typical birth complications include placental abruption (placenta detaches from the uterus before labor is completed), placenta previa (placenta covers opening of cervix), or problems with the umbilical cord (when it slips through the cervix before the baby or gets compressed during contractions), any of which threaten safe vaginal delivery.
Multiples. Mothers carrying multiple babies will often have one or more of the babies in an abnormal presentation, making vaginal delivery difficult.
Additionally, once a mother has had a C-section, it is often suggested to deliver future children the same way, depending on the type of incision and other factors.

Risks of C-sections
A C-section is a major operation, and, like all major surgeries, it involves risks. Babies born after elective C-sections may have a greater chance of breathing problems at birth, as well as other injuries. For the mother, risks include: •Increased bleeding •Blood clots •Inflammation and infection of the uterus membrane •Reactions to anesthesia •Wound infection •Surgical injuries to bowel and bladder •Greater risks for future pregnancies

s parents, it’s easy to feel pressured to throw our children perfect birthday parties they will remember forever. And, as a mom of two kids, I have had firsthand experience learning what works and what doesn’t when it comes to birthday party entertaining. And I’ve realized: Parties don’t have to be stressful! Here are my go-to entertaining tips to help your next birthday party or get together run smoothly. 1) Start with an empty dishwasher. Even with a small gathering, dirty dishes pile up fast. To save yourself from a post-party sink full of dishes plus a full dishwasher, be sure to run and clear the washer before guests arrive.
2) Prepare a family-friendly cheese platter or cheese-fruit kebabs. A cheese platter is a wonderful option for simple get-togethers as well as large parties. I like to serve unexpected but family-friendly and mild cheeses such as creamy Havarti or Gouda so even picky eaters are happy. Fruit kabobs offer a fantastic but simple way to serve fruit to kids. Layer grapes, strawberries, blueberries, or apples with your favorite kid-friendly cheese. The kabobs are perfect for grabbing and eating. (Just be careful that the skewers aren’t too sharp and are safely discarded after use).
3) Only place two items in the oven. In order to avoid a holdup at the oven, plan your menu to include no more than two items that need to be baked or heated. Unless you have an industrial-sized oven available (lucky you!), it’s difficult to time multiple baked items so they’ll be ready for the start of an event. Plus, cold foods are incredibly kid friendly and easy to prepare ahead of the party.With these types of munchies ready in the fridge, you can quickly satisfy hungry tummies at a moment’s notice. Don’t fret about preparing a four-course gourmet meal. Instead, make memories with your child and enjoy interacting with your guests.
5) Capture the moment. I usually try to carry a camera with me throughout the day to make sure I’m getting snapshots of special moments. Investing in a neck strap for your camera is worth it. It’s a lifesaver to have your hands free and ready to fill an empty glass or help with opening presents.Another option is to ask family or friends if they can help out. If you have a friend or sister who is a great photographer, she might not mind taking a few pics so that you get plenty of photos with your little ones. And, I always try to capture a few pictures before the party starts (while the kiddos are still clean!).
6) Have a two-bite maximum. Don’t serve anything that can’t be eaten in two bites, especially if you are hosting an event where children will be running around and adults will be standing most of the time. It makes conversation much easier when you are not fumbling around with a plate full of food, cutlery, and a beverage. One of my favorite kid-friendly recipes is a Havartiand-Pear Grilled Cheese Sandwich that’s cut into snack-size quarters (see sidebar for recipe). 4) Pick a unique theme. My kids are constantly getting invited to birthday parties, and to ensure their own special days standout, I pick party themes that are as unique as they are. For inspiration, I look for theme ideas in the things my kids love, such as their favorite colors, books, animals, characters, etc. Once a concept is sparked, Pinterest offers additional resources to make the details happen.

Add the remaining butter in a nonstick skillet, and place it over medium heat. Swirl the butter so it coats the bottom of the pan. Place sandwich in skillet with non-buttered bread side down, and cook until the bread is toasted and golden brown (about 4 to 5 minutes). Flip the sandwich, and cook the other side for an additional 3 to 4 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from the skillet, slice into quarters, and serve.

Create sensory-rich experiences for
A
lthough we associate it mostly with carefree fun, there is also science involved in child’s play. The latest educational research shows that from infancy on, play teaches us the valuable skills needed to strengthen our bodies and develop our brains. Play improves a child’s ability to identify, sort, react to, and expand upon the information presented to him in an environment. Children learn best by experiencing the world with their senses. They need to see, feel, hear, smell, and even taste things to understand them fully. A child is in an optimal learning situation when he participates in activities that utilize his senses. This is called “sensory play.” The more children use their senses, the more completely they learn. The science of play actually starts at conception! Playfully, to build leg and abdominal muscles, an unborn infant uses his legs to push off a uterine wall, causing him to flip and tumble. Once a child is born and through his adolescence, he should be surrounded by materials that invite use of the senses and provide quality learning opportunities. Engaging the senses during exploration enables children to develop communication, reasoning, and problem-solving skills. Self-confidence and social development increase as children master what they are trying to achieve. More importantly, sensory play leads to imaginative play, which is crucial for emotional and cognitive development. Imagination helps children anticipate scenarios, too. When my children were growing up, I created a learning wonderland in our house based on research I conducted while at Johns Hopkins University. You, too, can make sensory-rich environments or scenarios for your kids. All you need to do is clear out an area like the basement, family room, or even the garage to use for playtime. Next, rummage through closets, storage items, and your kitchen to find creative learning tools. Then, pull it all together while being especially conscious of the five senses, which can be incorporated in the following ways: 30 I parentguide News I June 2014

Smell. Cooking and
baking can offer a great way to boost math skills while stimulating the senses. With a chocolate chip cookie recipe, all of those spoon, cup, liquid, and solid measurements enable math practice and tickle the sense of smell. Another time, try creating a “smell test” station with dip sticks in oils, perfumes, and other aromatherapy items (being mindful of allergies and sensitive noses, of course).
See. Create opportunities
to explore and see the world with scavenger hunts and nature discovery. Find tips to foster nature-based activities at www.parentguidenews. com/Articles/NaturalSplendor. In a different play session, bring out some black lights, and see the kinds of effects they create on different colors and surfaces. The lights can also be used for calming behavior.
Hear. Create your own
special headphone experience by streaming a range of different sounds like music, banging, drumming, etc., through them. In addition, your children can form a rock band with microphones, bongos, and tambourines.

Make a sensory diet of taste experiences through cooking with varied flavors, taste testing, and even food fights!
Feel.
Try to keep on hand a truckload of art supplies like clay, paint, putty, “slime,” canvas, plastic, and more. In the summer, employ water toys of all types and sizes for a fully tactile (and wet!) experience.
Some other fun, sensory-rich learning activities to try are game nights, creating photo exhibitions and art galleries, rock collecting and polishing, knitting, sewing, and carpentry. Within the context of free multi-sensory play, children learn how to make friends; use motor skills; and assimilate the symbols required to read, write, and calculate. You can’t go wrong as long as you keep learning and fun in mind! Anything you do will be a success when you make a conscious effort to be as creative as you can. The more sensory-rich your fun zone, the more scientific your play becomes. You’ll be amazed by how much your children can teach themselves. Your child’s growth in strength will also help him feel peace, comfort, joy, and a positive attitude of “Yes, I can!”

Viejo San Juan (as locals know it) is a seven-square-block area of cobblestone streets and pigeon-filled plazas. Translation: Convincing kids to visit is as good as done. The trails take you 200 feet down into the earth. You can take a trolley ride through the caves and sinkholes, which have some odd types of fish (they’re blind!), plenty of bats, and tons of ferns. Go on your own or prearrange a guided tour; either is an adventure. This isn’t just a way to kill an hour — plan on an entire day. Yes, my favorite Puerto Rican adventures are outside hotel walls. But truth be told, some of the best family resorts in the world are in Puerto Rico, so why not sink your teeth into them? It’s time to cast off heavy socks and boots in favor of open-toed shoes and sandals. As your feet emerge from hibernation, consider thes following tips for summer foot care.
Sporting sandals? Stability, support, and protection should be top-of-mind when you’re sandal shopping. Look for a sandal with a low, stable sole and a heel cup that allows it to remain properly aligned on your foot while you walk. A toe cap will keep your toes from being stubbed. And don’t forget arch support, which helps distribute pressure evenly and makes sandals more comfortable. What about flip-flops? They’re everywhere, and while they may have a limited place in your warm-weather wardrobe, flip-flops should not be worn as an everyday summer shoe. Flip-flops provide zero support for your feet and ankles, and their structure leaves you open to toe stubs and ankle injuries. Limit your flip-flop use to the poolside or for short strolls up the block. Never wear them on uneven terrain. Pass the sunscreen. When you’re slathering on sunscreen everywhere else, remember your feet need sun protection, too. The upper surface of the foot generally lies perpendicular to the rays of the sun when standing. This positioning makes your feet susceptible to more ultraviolet radiation than other parts of the body.
Tips for kids:
Foot hygiene can be challenging for children in summer, especially if they wear sneakers without socks. Going sockless can create a breeding ground for bacteria inside kids’ shoes. Encourage your kids to wear lightweight socks, or try light summer shoes with mesh uppers that can be easily washed to control bacteria growth and odor.

Creams generally are a better option than spray-on sunscreens, which may not cover all areas of your feet well enough. Rub sunscreen liberally over the tops and sides of the feet, as well as in between toes. Remember to reapply sunscreen to feet and legs throughout the day, especially after swimming. Open shoes equal dirt and dryness. Ever notice how much dirt and sand accumulate on your feet when you’re wearing sandals or going barefoot? Clean feet resist infections, so wash your feet regularly and carefully, including in between your toes. Dry thoroughly with your own towel, not a towel you share with others. If dryness develops, apply moisturizer to the soles and the tops of your feet. Some pre-pedicure advice. Before heading to the salon, inspect your feet. If you find cracked skin, cuts, or blisters, you should delay your visit until the skin is healed. These skin problems can provide an entry point for bacteria, which could lead to infection. Most nail salons are careful about cleaning footbaths between clients, but any bacteria left behind can cause infections in open skin. Watch those bare feet. When you’re at the beach, avoid walking barefoot along rocky shores or uneven surfaces. It’s easy to cut or bruise your feet or ankles when wading. And if you’re taking to the woods or wild grassy areas, cover your feet and legs with shoes and socks to prevent ticks from attaching to bare skin. Some ticks carry Lyme disease, and covering up on hikes can help protect you.
