Kids & Fitness What are your options? W

e all want what is best for our children. We want them to have the right nutrition, the right education, the right friends, and, of course, the right choices in fitness. The right choice for yyour our child could involve anything from dance and baseball to soccer and martial arts. With so many different options available, it can be tough to choose the right one for your child. Let’s explore how to determine which fitness outlet best suits your child. Most importantly, you need to identify why you want your child involved in some type of fitness-based activity. What is it that you want your child to gain? Is your child a couch potato, stuck on that new video game? Does he have attention and focus issues? Does he suffer from coordination issues? Is he the star athlete whose talents you want to hone to get that big lacrosse scholarship one day? Once you identify the reasons, do some research regarding various types of programs and discuss them with your child. Together, come to a decision

about which sport or activity is the most appealing. Once you’ve determined your reasoning, it’s time to start interviewing potential studios, coaches, and programs. Whenever speaking with fitness professionals, always address them with the same level of respect, courtesy, and professionalism that you’d expect. If they are truly passionate about their career in fitness, they will appreciate this and go above and beyond for your family. If you’re just looking for the best price in town, be cautious that you may be sacrificing quality. Price shouldn’t be the only consideration when looking around for programs.

Contract considerations

Martial arts, dance, yoga, and other fitness studios will often sell a contract for kids’ programs. Be cautious when it comes to long-term contracts, and always ask questions. Little children often change their minds about an activity after a few trial months. You don’t want to be stuck paying for classes 18 months after your kid has already moved on to another interest.

facility that is up to date on the newest concepts and safety precautions. If an instructor has a background in medicine, bodywork, or nutrition, that’s a definite plus!

Set an example

Nothing helps kids stick with their fitness program more than active parents. When parents are active in fitness, kids are much more likely to commit to their program. It doesn’t have to be the same sport or activity, but when parents are active, kids will be, too. Try and set the best example for your children by maintaining your own health and fitness. Don’t underestimate this simple win-win formula. Before making any hasty decisions, take the time to identify your reasoning, interview instructors, study contracts, and ensure continuing education. Most importantly, commit to a healthy lifestyle for yourself. Employ these simple methods, and you’re sure to make the best fitness choices for your family.

Safety first

It is a common misconception that every fitness teacher is certified and trained to work with kids. You would be astonished to know how few instructors actually are CPR certified. You should always ask what certifications the instructors hold before signing your child up for lessons. Also remember that there is no governing body for many types of classes and activities. Anyone, whether experienced or not, can open a dance studio, martial arts studio, Parkour gym, training center, etc. A great interview question for parents to asking is: “In what kinds of continuing education courses do you and your instructors participate?” The fitness world is always evolving, and you want a

or many families with loved ones on the autism spectrum, the idea of a long journey can be tricky. For some, the concepts of “autism” and “vacation” may seem like they just don’t mix. The thought of taking a child with autism out of his regular routine, disrupting his schedule, and embarking on a journey far from home can be daunting. However, I’ve found that with careful planning, preparation, and organization, a family journey can be possible, as well as fun and memorable for everyone. With help from the great resources at SATH.org, homepage for the Society for Accessible Travel & Hospitality, I’ve compiled suggestions to make your upcoming venture as streamlined as can be. 12 I parentguide News I November 2014

Pick out a special travel toy. Sometimes it’s helpful to allow the child to pick out a specific toy to carry on a trip. If he does this ahead of time, he can carry the toy at (and near) home to prepare for the journey. This can also help the child feel like he’s taking “a piece of home with him.

Display the diagnosis. At all times, have your child wear

Create a visual story. Providing visuals can help your child

You can print these out and paste them into a travel journal, which your child can reference before and during the trip. For example, create a visual story in the journal about what it will be like to go through airport security. 3- Step Party Plan

by Lisa Paul Heydet

For a fun and fabulous fete.

W

hen it comes to celebrating a birthday party for kids, it takes a lot of preparation to make sure everything goes smoothly and your guests leave happy. Choosing to throw a birthday party at home means you get to be as creative as you’d like with your activities and games. The more parties you host, the easier it gets to plan a party. Before long, you’ll know exactly what steps to take to get everything ready for a fun day. If this is your first time throwing a birthday party for your child, follow the steps below to ensure it will be a fabulous event your child will always remember.

Step 1: Choose a theme Choosing the right theme for your child’s birthday party is exciting but difficult because there are so many amazing ideas that abound. You can decide to have a princess, superhero, movie, or dress-up party. The possibilities are endless! Once you’ve settled on a theme, you can get started with thinking up related food and snacks. Websites like Spoonful.com offer great recipes and really creative, step-by-step

SK 11/14

14 I parentguide News I November 2014

instructions for cupcakes and other treats. Your decorations are also an important aspect of the party and, of course, they should match your theme colors and characters. Think pink for a princess party and black, white, and gold for a Hollywood party. Guests should receive goodie bags with toys and favors that all relate to the party theme, and souvenirs that they make are always appreciated. Activities and games can be classics like Pin the Tail on the Donkey, break the piñata,

and Simon Says but with a twist having to do with your theme. For a really cool idea, have the theme be a surprise to your guests, but include a hint on the invitation like bring a mask or dress up as your favorite movie character.

Step 2: Send invitations You should give your guests plenty of notice by sending out invitations at least three or four weeks before the party. Making themerelated invitations from scratch is a fun activity for you and your kids. Get creative with art supplies like pipe cleaners, pom poms, stickers, and more to decorate your invitations. Another idea is to save on paper and send out an Evite. Several websites allow you to make customized e-mail invitations with tons of template options. It’s easy to send these out, and many such services are free of charge. When planning your guest list, consider inviting the same amount of kids as your child’s age. If your daughter is 5, let her invite five of her friends to the party. By following this tip, you’ll have a more manageable number of guests. parentguidenews.com

have lots of parents at the party, too. It’s a good idea to have something to keep them happy like finger foods and maybe even some delicious “mocktails.” While the kids are left to play, have a designated area where the parents can mingle and talk, watch a movie, or listen to music.

Proof

Step 3: Make it memorable

Once you have everything planned out, get ready to have a great time with your kids and party guests! It will be rewarding to see the kids running around while enjoying the games and food. Have some other parents around to help with supervision to keep the party under control, and don’t forget to take pictures!

The most memorable birthday parties are the ones that feature unique and exciting activities and surprises. Take into account the age of the party guests, and coordinate activities based on the range of ages. For younger children, have a surprise character in costume come to the party. The kids will love getting to meet and play with a beloved figure. Have games with prizes, and make sure every party guest gets an awesome grab bag so that no one leaves empty-handed. You’ll likely

Marvelous

Maui Family travel to paradise.

Photo credit: Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA) / Sri Maiava Rusden

by Kara Mayer Robinson

Ready to venture to Hawaii? We recommend Maui, an island with gorgeous scenery and plenty to do — but few crowds. Here’s how to do it family-style.

Pick Your Resort Wisely Hotel hopping can be fun, but when you’ve traveled this far (two six-hour flights from New York), you deserve rest and relaxation. Most hotels are stocked with pools, beach fronts, family activities, and kid-friendly food. Why pass up this good stuff? There are two clusters of big resorts on Maui. One is in Wailea, a stretch of calm beaches peppered with occasional rock formations. There’s a walking path along the coastline that’s perfect for early morning runs and sunset strolls. It’s close to restaurants and Haleakala Crater, the volcano many people visit to see the sunrise. We stayed at the enormous and fully loaded Grand Wailea Resort, a lushly landscaped property that’s pitch-perfect for kids. It’s all about the pools here, which include a 2,000-foot-long, 770,000gallon extravaganza with nine pools on six levels. There’s a Tarzan pool with rope swing, a whitewater rapids slide, caves, and an infant pool. You can get a free SCUBA lesson or try paddleboarding. If your kids are active and energetic, this is the resort for you. There’s another strip of hotels — and golf courses — in Kaanapali, which is well-situated near Lahaina, where you’ll find the crazypopular Old Lahaina Luau (details below), restaurants, and stores. Up a few miles is Kapalua, a divine area set apart from the pack by an expansive landscape, stunning vistas, snorkel-perfect bays, and an escape from crowds. The crown jewel is the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua, an upscale resort with A+ service and an instant relax-and-rejuvenate vibe. It has a three-tiered pool with killer views of the Pacific, a kiddie pool, and a mellow beach front. It also has something other local resorts don’t: Jean-Michel Cousteau’s Ambassadors of the Environment program. It’s an assortment of nature activities, like outrigger canoe rides, whale watching, and underwater photography snorkeling lessons. We tried a coastal walk and tide pool exploration, where we picked up sea cucumbers, spotted sea urchins, and learned how to use a white berry to de-fog snorkel masks.

Stay Here

If you want to explore local sites like snorkeling beaches — hello, sea turtles! — and visit a pineapple plantation, Kapalua is a prime location. If your kids are fascinated by nature, and you want to feel like you’re truly on vacation, the Ritz is for you.

Pick Your Adventures

We love resorts, but it’s impossible to experience Maui’s beauty and culture without venturing off road.

Road to Hana This two-and-a-half-hour, twisty route with 600

curves and 54 bridges hugs the mountains far up from the sea and may cause a lump in your throat. But it’s worth it for the lush, tropical landscape you enter into. Pull off at any number of stops to walk hiking trails, swim in waterfall pools, and play on black sand beaches. -Gohawaii.com

Snorkel Near Sea Turtles

There are snorkel opportunities all over the island. We like Kapalua Bay and Honolua Bay, where locals say seeing sea turtles is a sure thing. You can also ask your hotel for recommendations.

Sunrise Atop the Volcano Prepare to wake up early — and dress warmly — to see the always-popular sunrise from the top of Haleakala Crater, 9,740 feet up. Drive there yourself or take an excursion. -Akinatours.com

Whale Watching From January through April, so

many humpback whales gather in the channel between Maui and Moloka’i that locals call it “whale soup.” You can see, and sometimes hear, whales from land — but why not take a boat and get up close? -Pacificwhale.org Photo credit: Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA) / Tor Johnson

Photo credit: Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA) / Tor Johnson

Do a Luau It’s a bit touristy, but oozes the flavor of the 50th Lahaina Luau, which brings in hundreds of tourists every night to enjoy a pig roast, buffet feast, hula dancing, and a show with Hawaiian dancers and music. Reserve online early, as it sells out, in spite of its hefty price tag. -Oldlahainaluau.com

Discover Hawaiian Culture

Many Hawaiians have a deep spirituality and connection to ancient traditions. There are legends explaining everything from why Hawaiians named the points that jut out into the sea to why it’s bad luck to take hardened lava rock off the island. For Brady Bunch fans, it conjures images of the idol taboo; and that’s a good thing. Photo credit: Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA) / Max Wagner

5 Simple Self-Defense Tips

Practice safety during holiday shopping. by Howard Mallen

H

oliday shopping can frazzle the brain. Shoppers are trying to remember gift lists while simultaneously calculating whether it’s better to use a coupon or sign up for an in-store credit card. Personal safety at the mall and in the parking lot is the last thing on most people’s minds, but it should truly be top of mind. Poorly lit parking garages, arms full of packages, keys buried in the bottom of overflowing purses, and other factors can make shoppers particularly easy targets for predators. To help you stay safe this holiday shopping season, consider the following list of personal safety tips.

Stay aware of your surroundings by scanning your environment. No matter how busy you

are, do not allow your mind to wander. It might seem important in the moment to be making a to-do list in your head, but if you’re worrying about appetizers for tomorrow’s holiday party, you might not notice someone following you to your vehicle.

Even if it means that you have to walk a bit farther, park in well-lit areas. It is best to

avoid shopping after sundown, but if you must do so, try to bring a friend or family member along with you. When you park, avoid parking next to vans, trucks with camper shells, or cars with tinted windows. You want to keep your car as visible to as many people as possible. Also avoid parking next to tall shrubs or plants that could block views of your vehicle.

your body makes you more connected to your bag. If someone tries to steal your purse, you will be pulled with the strap. You can become unbalanced and put into a vulnerable position, or you could end up in a physical altercation with the assailant. If your purse is draped on one shoulder, you can easily let go of it.

Dress casually and comfortably.

The mall during holiday shopping season is not the time to make a fashion statement. It is better to leave the high heels and flashy accessories at home. Jeans and sneakers will help you blend in, and if needed, enable you to make a quick getaway. Also avoid wearing large and expensive-looking jewelry that can draw additional attention to you.

Don’t hesitate to ask a security guard to walk you to your car. If you are shopping at night,

and the crowds at the mall have thinned out for the day, taking an extra step to stay safe is always a good idea. Or, plan ahead and pay the few extra dollars to valet park your car so you do not have to walk alone with arms full of bags.
