Parent-Teacher Partnerships Helping children with special needs succeed. by Margaret Petry, Ph.D.

A

s a parent of a special needs child, you do your best to meet your child’s unique needs — but once the child leaves the house and goes into a school or daycare setting, all of your control goes out the window. And no matter how well you might have prepared the school by alerting the staff to your child’s diagnosis, there is still the possibility you will find yourself dealing with a teacher who doesn’t understand your child’s needs and refuses to make allowances for behavior and/or needs that are unique to your child. The result of this disconnect can be a litany of classroom-related issues with which too many parents of special needs children are familiar: incomplete assignments, behavior problems, poor grades, requests for extra help at home, and ultimately, a parent-teacher conference. So what can you do to help you child deal with a difficult classroom situation? Here are some useful strategies:

Inform the school administration at the beginning of the year of your child’s needs. Share information about your child’s learning, medical, emotional, and/or physical disabilities. This important first step lays the groundwork for dealing with issues if they arise later. 12 I parentguide News I September 2014

SK 9/14

Request a parent/teacher conference. According to the National Parent Teacher Association, a parentteacher conference is a “time when important people in a student’s life can talk about how that student is doing in school.” Parents are the experts about their child, and teachers are the experts about the child’s grade-level requirements. Prior to attending a parent-teacher conference, parents are encouraged to speak to their child about school, including his favorite and least favorite subjects. Tell your child about the upcoming meeting with the teacher and the shared goal of helping him succeed at school. Additionally, ask your child if he has any questions or concerns that the parent may address with the teacher, as well as what the child likes best about his instructor. parentguidenews.com

How to tell when your child is ready for lessons. by Leila Viss

A

lthough not every person is destined to be a concert musician, everyone can be a music maker, enthusiast, and supporter. Giving your child the gift of learning music on any instrument is something to treasure, but finding the answers on how to provide this gift is not always easy. You may be unaware of your youngster’s readiness for making music, but there are some signs that should help you make that assessment. Here are some steps toward unlocking your child’s innate musicality and readiness. How can I tell when my child is ready? Encourage Exploration

• Purchase a keyboard instrument (a portable digital keyboard may do the trick, but plan to upgrade when lessons begin). Let your child explore sound before enrolling in lessons. • Once this exploration begins, notice how your potential musician experiments at the keys. • Download some music game apps such as Piano Dust Buster 2.0, The Most Addicting Sheep Game, or Magic Piano, and invite your child to explore them. It won’t take long for a youngster to be drawn into these magical games that also teach music fundamentals. • If the keyboard and favorite apps receive regular visitation, this is strong evidence that your future maestro is ready to engage in lessons.

Prime the Potential

Some basic skills are involved in learning any instrument, and it’s important that these fundamentals are developed before enrolling in lessons. Consider early music education groups, which are perfect for young learners. An ideal candidate for instru-

mental lessons can: • Say and sing the alphabet • Count to at least 20 • Match pitch and sing songs with ease • Identify the left from the right hand • Cut with scissors • Color and draw with markers, pencils, etc. • Dance and move freely to music • Clap and march with a steady beat

How do I know what instrument is right for my child?

The piano is the easiest instrument to begin exploring and eventually making music. Enrolling your child in piano lessons may be a place to begin his music education. Once your budding musician is introduced to other instruments in school around grade 4 or 5, a shift in interest may occur.

How do I choose the right teacher?

Referrals from friends and acquaintances are your best bet for a good teacher. If they are happy with a teacher, there’s a good chance that you will be, too. Arrange interviews with several teachers, and you’ll discover that each one of them has a unique studio. It’s also important for you to determine what your priorities are for your child’s music education. Here are some things to consider: parentguidenews.com

• Some teachers may excel at preparing students to compete, while others may lean toward a more relaxed approach with fewer opportunities to compete or formally perform. • While some may remain set in a traditional approach with standard repertoire, others may emphasize lessons in creativity beyond the page and various styles other than classical. • Group lessons provide a social setting that may best suit kids who are still on the fence about studying an instrument. Private lessons usually accommodate schedules more easily and offer one-on-one instruction. • Music should be shared! Ask if the teacher offers encouragement and opportunities to perform, even casually. Although difficult, performing instills discipline, motivation, confidence, and good experience for future public speaking.

• Teachers often use a method book or series to teach an instrument. A good question to ask during your chat with a potential teacher is, “What methods and tools will you use to help my child progress in his music skills?”

How do I balance being a supportive parent without becoming overbearing?

Here are a couple of tips to help you maintain a healthy attitude: 1) Some teachers may require you to be present at lessons to take notes, so consider this as a free lesson yourself and learn right along with your child. You will realize that building musical skills is a long-term process with peaks, valleys, and plateaus. 2) Regardless if you attend lessons or not, it is important for you to remember that this is your child’s endeavor and not yours. Allow your budding musician to:

•Learn how to learn •Read all assignments •Take charge and ask the teacher questions •Be responsible for collecting books prior to the lesson, etc. 3) The best support you can offer your child is providing and modeling structure. • Make daily practicing a priority so it becomes a habit by setting up a schedule. • Instead of setting the timer and demanding practice, ensure that the teacher’s instructions are understood and completed during practice time by reviewing the assignment with your musician. The amount of daily time with the instrument may vary, as consistent practice will make the assignment easier to play by the end of the week. •Arrive promptly for each lesson and be on time for pickup. Music lessons are a worthy investment toward a gift that lasts a lifetime. Happy music making!

Gifted Education Nice to have or

need to have?

by Dr. Lynne Manouvrier

I

n an era of testing, accountability, and declining school budgets, many gifted programs have been viewed as ornamental and in a fallback position to core disciplines. The prevailing notion is that because gifted children possess superior intellectual ability, somehow they will learn on their own and become successful. Often, the school’s educational priority rests on those students who are at-risk or who require academic intervention services. Some gifted children are cast in the role of a teacher to assist others academically in group activities. Moreover, the concept of a differentiated classroom is still a work in progress. Gifted students are in need of particular attention because of their unique academic, social, and emotional needs.

What are the characteristics and educational needs of gifted children?

the above reasons, gifted youngsters may feel isolated and different in a school setting. They need to have the opportunity during the day to be with other students who share their capabilities and interests.

While guidelines are not fixed, gifted youngsters are generally identified by high scores on standardized IQ tests, strong personal interests, and superior school performance. They are generally working a minimum of two years above grade level and require a different curriculum. Cognitively speaking, gifted students assimilate and master skills quickly. It may be difficult to keep them focused because they become easily bored if not challenged. Interested in a wide variety of topics and activities, gifted children often master what they think they need to know, and then move on to the next task. Sometimes, gifted youngsters become perfectionists on a favorite topic and will work on one detail of a project just to perfect it. One of the most interesting misconceptions about gifted students is that they have advanced abilities in all disciplines. On the contrary, some may show a disposition for the arts, while others may be gifted in the sciences. Additionally, some students who are gifted in a particular subject may not have realized their full potential because of the manner in which the class was taught. A steady stream of worksheets, lectures, and test preparation materials for state assessments may result in fatigue, boredom, or oppositional behavior, and hold a gifted student back from realizing his or her own potential. Multiple options and a challenging, stimulating curriculum are important because creative and critical thinking skills are highly developed. Giftedness may be viewed as the other side of special education because the intellectual superiority of the student may surpass social and emotional skill development. Gifted youngsters may have difficulty in dealing with stress. They are extremely sensitive to criticism and peer rejection because they may be viewed as a “know-it-all.” Gifted children may have difficulty collaborating in a group if other members of the team don’t share their opinion. They have unique ways to solve problems because they see what others may not see. It is for this reason that gifted students may challenge authority if they believe that the authority is wrong. Highly sensitive about humanitarian concerns, gifted children have an intense focus and need continual stimulation. They often see the absurdities of certain situations and other classmates may not understand their humor. For all of

What should parents look for in a gifted program? Parents should look for programs where the curriculum is written at least two years above grade level. Lessons should be inquiry based with hands-on, performance-based projects that are interdisciplinary in nature where appropriate. A gifted program should emphasize a strong literacy component, critical thinking, problem solving, research, and technology. The program should promote the joy of learning in and of itself in a challenging, but supportive, environment. It should build self-esteem, confidence, and camaraderie. A broad range of subject matter outside of the standard core curriculum should be offered. Gifted classes should be limited to 20 students whenever possible and staffed with teacher assistants. Parent workshops are an integral part of a gifted program. These special sessions led by psychologists explore a variety of issues, including social, emotional, educational, and family concerns. The workshops provide a dialogue so that parents of gifted youngsters don’t feel alone. In a collaborative, nonthreatening environment, parents explore ways to guide their children in realizing their hopes and dreams. Parent workshops provide research and resource materials in gifted education. They cover appropriate protocols in how to ask questions and seek advice from the school, how to advocate for children, and how to foster a productive home and school connection. All parents want their child to feel valued, relate to others, feel understood, and be part of a community. A quality gifted program within or outside of the school assists in this endeavor. Gifted education stimulates the pursuit of higher level goals through learning experiences geared for children with superior intellectual ability. It increases self-awareness by promoting realization and acceptance of one’s capabilities and interests. Finally, a gifted program focuses on leadership development and the opportunity for students to relate to each other intelligently and socially. Gifted education does matter!

CHAZAK gives families the opportunity to provide their children with meaningful Jewish experiences. The multi-faceted program features monthly Shabbat and Jewish holiday programs; three-hour drop-off programs on some school holidays; Thursday drop-off classes; Bar and Bat Mitzvah opportunities; and social activities. Rabbi Michael White, senior Rabbi at Temple Sinai, has been a strong advocate for the program since its early planning stages and views CHAZAK as an important initiative for enabling children and families to celebrate the joys of Jewish living and be embraced by a loving community. The program continues to advance the temple’s efforts to include all families and children in the Jewish learning process. CHAZAK classes have a low teacherto-student ratio and are led by certified special education teachers. They are designed to meet the individual and unique needs of each child, as well as those of the involved families. Workshops integrate movement, music, art, crafts, cooking, technology, yoga, and other forms of enrichment into the learning experience. Members and non-members are welcome. Are you concerned that thumb-sucking, pacifier or bottle use is continuing too long? Pediatric dentist Jodi Guttenberg and her associates can help. They recommend that children visit the dentist for the first time at 2 years of age, and they encourage parents to be in the room whenever it’s possible. During their first visit, they examine the child, clean the child’s teeth and administer a fluoride treatment. They’ll also discuss the child’s diet, especially if there’s evidence that it’s impacting dental health. They also provide crowns, root canals and fillings for even the youngest of their patients — they’ve seen cavities in patients as young as 18 months old. Often local anesthesia is sufficient for these procedures, and they try to avoid putting children “out” if at all possible. They have a “tell, show, do”

Build a

Healthy Lunch

10 tips to start the school year.

www.rubbe

rmaid.com

1. Go from dinner to lunch.

4. Shape a fun lunch.

5. Treat in moderation.

Get creative with last night’s leftovers. When you make dinner, keep tomorrow’s lunch in mind. Dining on roast turkey or chicken for dinner tonight? Turn them into sandwiches for tomorrow’s lunch. If you have pasta for dinner, think about packing your kids a pasta salad for lunch. Pretty much any dinner can be repurposed into a fun, healthy lunch.

Shaping sandwich bread into fun, exciting shapes with a cookie cutter helps transform your kids’ ordinary sandwich from something boring into something special. Think about different shapes for different days of the week to mix things up.

There’s no reason you can’t pack your kids a sweet treat for lunch, but think about giving them treats with substance. Give them a homemade banana muffin, or instead of using marshmallows in a sweet and sticky treat, try peanut butter. And if you prefer more “traditional” treats, just control the portions. One small brownie or cookie is all it takes to satisfy your kids’ sweet tooth.

2. Make a little out of a lot.

3. Add a dash of color.

Rather than buying lots of lunch-sized foods, purchase foods in bulk. Then, store them properly in airtight containers. You’ll save money and time by portioning the food out into your kids’ containers on a Sunday night. Doing this will save you valuable time during the hustle and bustle of the school week.

Nothing lights up a child’s lunch like colorful food items. Colorful foods aren’t only fun and inviting, but they also tend to be very nutritious and all natural. Consider carrots, cucumbers, blueberries, cherry tomatoes, and strawberries. The colors, and choices, are endless!

46 I parentguide News I September 2014

MB 9/14

6. Go beyond bread. If your kids love sandwiches, think about packing lunches that get away from white, wheat, or rye breads. Mix things up with tortilla wraps, bagels, toasted English muffins, pita pockets, fresh-baked rolls, or even crackers!

parentguidenews.com

9. Give your child choices. The best way to get your child really excited about lunch is to let her pick what she wants the day before. Give her two options either at the supermarket or while you’re preparing lunch. This way, you’re empowering your child while still keeping tabs and making sure she’s eating healthy.

7. Make your own trail mix.

10. Pack a note.

Anything goes when it comes to making your own snack mix for kids to enjoy: Think pretzels, cereal, dried fruit, and more. You can even toss in the occasional candy, dried yogurt bits, or chocolatecovered raisins.

Outside of food, packing supportive bits of love in the form of a note will help ease your child’s transition from summertime into school time. It lets her know you’re right there with her, even when you can’t be. What’s more, as a parent, you’ll feel a sense of comfort knowing that your child is reading your note while enjoying the lunch you prepared.

Proof

8. Get your kids in the kitchen. Encourage your kids to come shopping with you and pick out what they’d like for lunch – under your watchful guidance, of course. Then, get them excited about helping you pack their lunch. Your kids will feel good about eating the lunch they helped prepare.

Back-to-School Bookmark Make a literary lion for your pages.

Start the year with a super fun craft that will make your child’s reading routine even more exciting. This is a great D.I.Y. project to try with your family. Adult supervision is required.

Directions:

Supplies: •Wood Popsicle stick (large) •Superglue •1-inch cardboard circle •Wiggle eyes •Brown felt •Acrylic paint: light yellow, orange, dark brown •1 fine paintbrush •1 medium paintbrush

2

1 Use the medium paintbrush to coat the wood Popsicle stick with light yellow acrylic paint. Allow it to dry.

3

Mix together a small batch of the yellow and orange paints. Mix a separate batch together, this time with more orange added so it is darker than the first spot. These colors will form the “blush” tint for the lion’s cheeks.

48 I parentguide News I September 2014

by Angeli Zankel

MB 9/14

To create the foundation for the lion’s face, again use the medium paintbrush to cover the 1-inch cardboard circle with the light yellow paint.

4

On the now-yellow lion’s face, use the fine paintbrush to draw two circular cheeks with the lighter blush tint. Let them dry, and then apply the darker blush tint in the middle of the circles.

parentguidenews.com

6

5 Add the wiggle eyes to the face with tiny dots of superglue. Press down firmly on the eyes with your finger for five seconds.

7

Apply a dab of superglue to the circle’s border, then carefully attach the felt hair in small sections.

Use the dark brown paint to add a nose and mouth to the lion’s face. Feel free to get creative by adding a tongue or even a large smile!

8 Apply superglue to the yellow wood stick from step 1, adhere the lion’s face to it, and hold it in place for five seconds. Voila! Enjoy your literary lion bookmarks.

Woman oman mom

For the Woman behind the Mom

7 tips to help realize your idea. by Tamara Monosoff

3

Keep it simple. Many new product ideas include flashy features, from electronics to excessive bells and whistles that drive up production costs and the retail price. Creating high-quality products with fewer features at the right price can mean more sales and money in your pocket.

4

M

ulti-tasking parents often don’t realize that they already possess the necessary skills to become successful entrepreneurs: unrelenting endurance, the determination and stamina to get the job done, and coming up with on-demand solutions to everyday problems. These experiences often inspire ideas for innovative products to make life easier. And, being your own boss may be the best way for busy parents to create the flexibility and freedom that they often seek. For the past 10 years, I have seen thousands of people transform an initial idea into creative, money-generating new products. And, with the resurgent economy and awesome new resources available for developing, manufacturing, funding, video marketing, selling and distributing products, the opportunity for inventive product entrepreneurs has never been better.

E

very entrepreneur’s journey is unique, but here are seven tips to get started on the right path:

1

Treat your product or service idea as a business from the start. There is no true shortcut. With an open mind, analyze and understand the design and production costs, market size, selling price, profit potential, and competition before you spend money bringing your product to market.

2

How do you know if your product or service will sell? You don’t! Getting feedback about your product or service from the beginning of development is critical. Create a circle of advisors that will offer you real feedback, not just tell you that you’re doing a great job. Conduct informal focus groups (other than friends and family), and send out surveys (www.surveymonkey.com). Carefully listen to what people are telling you. You may need to let things go that are not working and focus on what is working. 50 I parentguide News I September 2014

IR 9/14

Raise smart money. There has never been a better time to fund your business.Use crowd-funding, microloans, credit lines, and new online options that fit your business. Resources: www.kabbage. com, www.somolend.com, www.kiva.org, www.opportunityfund. org/loans, and http://us.accion.org.

5

Connect with others who will help grow your business. The best way to network isn’t to tell everyone about what you’re doing. Instead, show interest in what others are creating and be generous. Offer resources and introductions that will help them along their way. Then invite them to be a part of what you are creating. When they need your product or service or hear of someone else that needs it, you will be the first person on their minds.

6

Use video marketing to your advantage. Nothing is more powerful in conveying a message about your business than compelling videos. The reality is that people watch videos more than they read. Why? Because most of us are visual learners. There are a variety of both on-camera and off-camera tools to improve your brand visibility. Take a look at Google Hangouts, ooVoo, iMovie, Skype, Animoto, Video Scribe, or VideoStir. Use these tools to create your videos and then post them on YouTube. Tip: In the description area under your video on YouTube, remember to add your website address to direct people back to your product or service page.

7

Celebrate your successes, large and small. Recognize setbacks for what they are: an unavoidable, and sometimes the most valuable, part of the journey. They offer an opportunity to build a business and life that you love. There are many steps along this journey, but with the abundance of new resources available, you can take your idea and run with it!
