The NWAIS Advantage?

A Continuous Improvement Mindset A Q+A with NWAIS Executive Director Mark Crotty

Mark Crotty joined NWAIS as executive director in July of 2019. And though he has worked in various capacities in independent education for 37 years — as a teacher, coach, dean and head of school — not even this veteran educator could have predicted how the COVID-19 pandemic would so completely upend all classroom norms. What he could have easily predicted, however, was how the accredited schools under the NWAIS umbrella would rise to the occasion to support their learning communities. We caught up with Crotty to learn more about how the organization and its member schools are responding to the challenges and opportunities of this uniquely testing time in our history.

What are some of the guiding principles or characteristics of NWAIS schools? In the broadest sense, it has to do with the fact that they are independent schools — self-governing, self-determining in terms of curriculum, in terms of who they hire, in terms of mission. I think the other thing that draws schools to NWAIS is the emphasis on continuous school improvement. And what’s also very interesting is that they’re not just committed to becoming better in and of themselves — it’s about wanting all schools to get better. There’s very much a strong commitment to public purpose in this association. What would you say are the main points of emphasis in terms of public purpose? Diversity, equity and inclusion are a big, big part of it. As are different service orientations and civic engagement. We want to use our platform to help schools get better, not just in our realm, but in other areas. For instance, when the pandemic started to hit, we opened up several of our programs to non-member schools. What does the process of accreditation look like for most schools? Schools can move through this on their own timeline, but within

a certain timeframe, but they can go faster or slower, depending on how ready they are. At first a school becomes what’s called a subscriber member — that’s sort of the entry level. To even become a subscriber, there’s a pretty detailed matrix outlining where they are per our different accreditation standards. When you’re a subscriber member, you have up to five years to then move into candidate status. Candidate status is when you are actually in the period where you are seeking to become accredited. When schools are in subscriber status, we would have identified things that the school needed to work on, and they would have worked on those

and then applied to enter candidate status. Assuming they go through candidate status and are successful, then they become a fully accredited member. What is required to maintain accreditation? Every eight years a school goes through a full self-study and visitation by a team of experts from other accredited schools in the association. They receive a detailed report on how they have or haven’t met the different accreditation standards and are told what they will need to do at that point to continue with their accreditation. The process is peer-reviewed and very improvement-oriented. What are the benefits of NWAIS accreditation — for schools and for families? I would say for the schools, to boil it down, it’s the networking and everything that comes with that. To go by the current circumstances, for instance — because I think that captures it really well — back in March when it first became evident that this pandemic was going to be something huge, the amount of sharing that went on in terms of communication, resources and programming was incredible. Part of what helped our schools deal with this is that they were already in the habit of continually rethinking how and why they were teaching. Of continued on next page

A Q&A WITH NWAIS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR MARK CROTTY

continued from previous page

course, that certainly got accelerated and intense, but it also fit in with our mindset. In the same way, though less directly, the benefit for a parent or student is being part of that network, and how that leads to excellence at the different member schools. Accreditation from NWAIS is a rigorous, peer-reviewed process — it’s a really strong stamp of approval. What are some of the best adaptations you’ve seen in response to the pandemic from your member schools? I think the main thing I’ve seen is that they were doing things to maintain a sense of community within their schools. It would have been really easy to just make this about the transmission of the academic part, but they tried to keep community rituals going. How should a parent go about choosing a school? I think a lot of people see a school as a means of access. Don’t do that. First of all, you don’t know what your kid’s going to be like two years from now, let alone eight or 10 years from now. Try to figure out how this school is going to know your child as an individual and help your child become the best possible version of himself or herself. Don’t look for a particular program or college placement [outcome] or any of those sorts of things.

Are you seeing any potential bright spots for education to emerge from the pandemic? I think two things. A lot of traditional education has needed a little bit of a jolt to get it to question some things. This has been a pretty big jolt! Depending on how some of that sticks and what answers people find, that’s potentially a really good thing. Our schools are such strong communities — they are so peoplefocused that I think families are going to be even hungrier for what they offer. Schools are doing a lot of really good reflection on who they are at the core and who they really want to be. What are you looking forward to in terms of next initiatives for NWAIS as an organization? I want us to become an even more tightly interconnected community of schools. We already do a tremendous amount of sharing and collaboration, but we want to try to figure out how to make that even tighter, better and stronger. I think the second thing that I want to take a really good look at is, as I mentioned, we have this incredible diversity of schools, and kind of saying, okay, are we doing what we can in the best ways to best meet the needs of all those diverse schools? So, those are two pretty big questions that I say are driving the next strategic vision for the association.

Regardless of whether they are learning remotely or are on campus in large or small groups, LWGMS students are fully immersed in our school’s innovative and holistic approach to educating adolescent girls— fostering academic excellence, creative confidence, positive risk-taking, and the development of individual talents. Students are participating in our full program, designed to support their engagement in academic rigor; to balance structure and flexibility and bolster social-emotional learning; to connect them with teachers and one another in community; and to offer students and families predictability within the context of this unpredictable pandemic. About NWAIS Schools THE RIGHT PLACE FOR YOUR CHILD

Students of color represent

of students receive some financial assistance

$15,670 median financial aid grant

Whatever diversity your family might bring, you will find yourself welcomed at any of our NWAIS schools.

With different missions, educational philosophies and cultures, the 113 independent schools in the Northwest Association of Independent Schools (NWAIS) provide a range of educational options.

Although there are many differences, our schools are similar in very important ways in that they: • Provide a safe environment for students to learn • Believe in providing an atmosphere that encourages hard work, leadership, personal responsibility and good citizenship • Provide small class sizes so that teachers may devote full attention to the intellectual, physical, social and emotional needs of all students • Provide high quality and accessible teachers who combine top teaching skills with a passion for their subject areas • Provide financial aid grants based on the need of the family • Have a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion For more information on the diverse array of independent schools, please visit us online at NWAIS.org or give any of our member schools a call. We invite you to attend one of their scheduled open houses or arrange for a school tour. We think you’ll be glad you did!

What does the NWAIS accreditation process mean for you? QUALITY • ACCOUNTABILITY • DEPENDABILITY NWAIS standards help schools develop their strengths to provide the best educational experiences for their students.
