As educators, you have a unique window into the support that families need.
As an educator or school-based health professional, how can I work with my students’ families to address mental health?
Adults in a school environment may be the first to notice changes in a student’s attendance, behavior and achievement. Good communication between home and school can be the first defense in identifying when intervention is needed. Start by building positive relationships and having productive conversations with your students’ families. Come from a place of empathy and compassion, and keep the focus on working together to connect families with the best possible resources to help the student.

“If we seize this moment, step up for our children and their families in their moment of need, and lead with inclusion, kindness and respect, we can lay the foundation for a healthier, more resilient and more fulfilled nation.”
– Dr. Vivek H. Murthy, Surgeon General of the United States
37% of adolescents ages 12–17 years reported having persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness and 1 in 6 U.S. children ages 2–8 years have a diagnosed mental, behavioral or developmental disorder.

Continuing Education Clock Hours
Co-sponsor ParentEd Talks and offer clock hours to your teachers
ParentMap is committed to meeting the requirements outlined by the Washington Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction for continuing education credit hours. Member schools may offer credit hours to teachers who participate in ParentEd Talks as long as the member school is an approved provider and its continuing education committee approves ParentEd Talks events/speakers.
How it works:
● All Washington public school districts are approved providers and all private schools can apply to be approved providers.
● There is no formal process to be a co-sponsor. ParentMap and the member school just need to have a mutual agreement.
● ParentMap will provide any resources needed for the member school clock hour committee to review and approve ParentEd Talks speakers, including content, speakers qualifications and event materials.
● Each individual member school will track and approve clock hours for its teachers.
ParentEd Talks Attendee Feedback
“I’m so glad to be in this webinar. I cannot tell you how isolated I have felt for the past 17 years with my son, and I am an education advocate, yet feel so helpless.”
“This webinar was fascinating with information on how screen time impacts brain development and young people's behavior. The follow-up email was quick with the recording and additional resources.”
“The webinar topics and speakers have been incredible. Holding them virtually allows me to attend when I normally wouldn’t - saves on travel, allows me to be flexible with work time, etc. It’s also more inclusive and accessible for those with mobility issues or transportation challenges. Please keep offering virtual speaker events!”
“The presentation was given in a very relaxing yet informative manner. I really appreciate how the speaker took something that worries many parents and made our children feel so special and unique.
Thank you so much, it really put a smile on my face and a bright future ahead. I definitely will listen to it again and this time take notes.”
