Merry winter days at National Five ways to make Christmas even more magical Trust places in South Somerset In Christmases past the Lord of Misrule managed festivities at Court. He returns this winter to Montacute House between 22 December and 5 January (3-7pm, except 24 & 25 Dec) and invites everyone to join the revelry. No two days will be the same with the Lord popping up to tell stories and spread mischief. You can visit his courtroom and make your own masks to be ready to join his parade at 5pm. Entertaining archaic performances, from Mummer’s plays to Montacute’s own dancers, will be happening whilst the smell of festive food fills the air. There is also the chance to see the ground floor of Montacute House lit by candle light. For more information, visit www. nationaltrust.org.uk/montacutehouse. Barrington Court will be brimming with festive atmosphere and adorned with decorations that give a

flavour of how the Lyle family would have enjoyed Christmas traditions in the 1920s. People can play gramophone records and games in the Great Hall – there will be singing, dancing and midwinter merriment in abundance. There will be the opportunity to meet Father Christmas himself. He’ll be in residence on Saturdays and Sundays, and will have a gift
for every child that pays him a visit. As he is such a popular chap, booking is essential (£9/ child). Barrington Court is open Friday-Monday in December (11am-3pm), except on Christmas and New Year’s Eve. During the festivities, you can enjoy the more relaxed ambiance on Fridays and Mondays, or family fun at the weekend.

As the nights draw in, we’re all gearing up for another festive spell. If you’re looking for some new ways to make Christmas extra magical this year, here are our favourite ways to get Christmassy with as little effort as possible. Entertainment: we’re spoilt for choice at this time of year. Book ahead to see some panto or theatre; pop on a Christmas film like Polar Express; or find your nearest carol service. Avoid positioning yourself next to Great Aunt Beryl with her dodgy singing. Christmas Eve: this is already the most magical night of the year, but you can take it to the next level. Create reindeer dust using oats and glitter (buy biodegradable glitter online); make a reindeer runway in the garden using paper lanterns to guide Rudolph & Co in; and use a Santa-tracking app to see the Big Fella’s progress. For a special treat, take the little ones to see Santa in his secret grotto! Festive Food: kids will love baking mince pies for Santa, in the knowledge that they’re helping him deliver all of his

presents. There are some great recipes online for easy Rudolph cupcakes, melting snowman biscuits, and Christmas pudding Rice Krispie cakes. Go Skating: ice skating has become one of the most popular festive family activities – it’s also quite fun to see Dad struggling to keep upright.
Get Outdoors: whilst it’s definitely a time for snuggling up, there’s something to be said for getting out for fresh air. Winter rambles for all ages are provided by countryside and gardens trusts, or combine a garden trail with Christmas fun, like Hetty Hedgehog’s Christmas Party Trail.
Visit Hestercombe Gardens near Taunton for Father Christmas (weekends until 24 Dec); Family Skating and Christmas Garden Trail (until 6 Jan), and The Tin Soldier (8 & 9 Dec). Book at hestercombe.com/christmas

Father Christmas and Mrs Claus at Puxton Park
Once upon a time in Westonsuper-Mare, Father Christmas and Mrs Claus excitedly announced that they would be spending Christmas at Puxton Park. They will be setting up a traditional stone cottage, located amongst the beautifully decorated trees and glimmering walkways, a perfect place for the little ones to meet Father Christmas and Mrs Claus. Father Christmas and Mrs Claus wanted to invite you all to come and join them this holiday season to have the most festive and joyous time in our Winter Wonderland. They had their elves decorate our park with colourful and joyous decorations that’ll whisk you into Christmas spirit. Father Christmas will be opening his cottage on the
1st of December and will greet you every weekend and after school where you can join him for a festive supper that includes buffet tea, ice-cream, festive disco and he will even give you a gift. Whilst Father Christmas is here at Puxton Park we will be hosting fun Christmas craft workshops where you can decorate your very own Christmas gifts! His reindeer will also be coming out to play as it’s their favorite time of year. There is a Grand light switch on to celebrate the opening of Santa's cottage on the 1st of December. The tree will be so sparkly and bright that all of his elves at the North Pole can see it! Come and join all the festive fun this year at Puxton Park. Visit Puxton.co.uk for more information or call 01934 523500.

Victorian Children in the Frame 23 November 2018 - 28 April 2019
My First Sermon by John Everett Millais (1864). Oil on canvas. Guildhall Art Gallery, City of London.
The Music Lesson, Lord Frederic Leighton (1877).
Seen & Heard, an exhibition at the City of London Corporation’s Guildhall Art Gallery, features 50 Victorian paintings exploring the changing role of children in Victorian Britain. With paintings from the Guildhall Art Gallery’s own collection and important pieces loaned by Tate Britain and Royal Academy on display, the exhibition will include works by artists such as Pre-Raphaelite pioneer, John Everett Millais, and Thomas Webster RA, which cast the era in a new light. The exhibition offers a visual narrative to a crucial point in history where, for the first time, children were actually listened to, and society saw value in Britain’s youth. Until then, children were only painted as an extension of the family’s name and patriarch, but they were now being shown playing amongst themselves, and with their families. The marked difference exposes the huge cultural shift in how society viewed, and treated, children. In the first 14 years of Queen Victoria’s 61-year reign, she gave birth to nine children. With so many of her young children in the public eye, the monarch set family values at the heart of her reign. Her lifestyle of motherhood inspired the upper classes to seek domestic happiness and caused many to look at the plight of young children forced to work in the dangerous and lonely conditions of the factories and mines.
My Second Sermon, Sir John Everett Millais, 1864. Oil on canvas. Guildhall Art Gallery, City of London.

Graham Packham, Chairman of the City of London Corporation’s Culture, Heritage and Libraries Committee, said: “Exhibitions at Guildhall Art Gallery never fail to impress in their ability to surprise and engage visitors, or the way in which they shed new light on a subject. ‘Seen and Heard’ will certainly be no exception and will offer a commentary on societal change that may enable people to revise their views on how children were depicted in art.”
Katherine Pearce, Curator, Guildhall Art Gallery, said: “This new exhibition will take visitors on an often emotive and enlightening journey to show how they reflect, and were influenced by, the social and political reforms of the time. As well as posing some interesting questions about how children were portrayed in art, ‘Seen and Heard’ will also be an opportunity to showcase pieces from Guildhall Art Gallery’s extensive collection, some of which will be on display in this context for the first time.”

King’s Hall School for pupils joining at age 11 SCHOLARSHIPS
When it comes to the move to ‘big school’ at age 11, many parents assume that the best choice is to progress straight to a senior school that has an 11+ intake and runs all the way to 16 or 18. At King’s Schools, we have a different way of making this key transition. In our two-site model, pupils joining at 11 begin in the friendly atmosphere of King’s Hall School, where they find their feet before moving at 13 to our senior school, King’s College. King’s Hall School and King’s College are closely linked. From early on, pupils at King’s Hall School visit King’s College to use its excellent facilities and absorb its atmosphere. Later, the great majority of King’s Hall pupils move on to King’s College at 13. There, they are
with their old friends, but they join other pupils from a wide range of schools, expanding their horizons and widening their peer group. As well as the benefits of gradual change from age 11 to 13, King’s Schools benefit from a two-site model. The facilities
and approaches for each site are age-appropriate to a greater degree than is possible on a single site. In terms of social development, the age range from 11 to 18 is huge. By attending King’s Hall School from 11, pupils are able to grow and develop as individuals.

This Autumn Somerset Wildlife Trust will be collecting seed from a variety of trees across its Mendip reserves as part of a national project to protect the UK’s trees by creating a huge tree seed bank. Somerset Wildlife Trust is part of the UK National Tree Seed Project, which has been set up by Kew’s Millennium Seed Bank, and made possible with funding from players of People’s Postcode Lottery. Tree seeds collected as part of the project – and those collected next year will be safely banked in the underground vaults of Kew’s Millennium Seed Bank – forming the UK’s first national collection of tree seeds. These seeds can then play a vital role in conservation work to protect UK trees and woodlands. The collections, and associated data, will be available to researchers working on solutions to tackle the many threats facing our woodlands. With the help of volunteer reserve wardens who regularly monitor the quality of seeds, the seeds will be collected when they are at their ripest and in the best condition. The Trust
Harridge Woods - Matt Sweeting
has already collected seed from Wayfaring Trees - a small tree of woodland edges, hedgerows, scrub and downland – from its Ubley Warren Reserve. In the coming months, the Trust will collect Spindle seed from Rose Wood and Mascall’s Wood and will also have professional tree climbers coming to the Trust’s Cheddar Wood Reserve to collect small leaved lime seeds. James Ozolins, East Mendip’s Assistant Reserves Manager explains why the project is so important: “With our everchanging climate and the associated spread of tree pests and diseases it is extremely
important to gather genetic information on the full range of native tree species including the less common species associated with ravine woodland and limestone grassland. Our Mendip woodlands are vital as they are home to an incredibly large and diverse variety of wildlife, from the smallest invertebrates to bats, birds and our some of our favourite small mammals such as dormice. Projects such as this ensure that we can continue to support these habitats in the future as our landscapes and environment evolves.”

EDUCATION, INFORMATION How to make good conversations a walk in the park Conversations are more responsive in natural environments such as parks and gardens than indoors, finds new research by the University of Manchester and Cardiff University. The researchers recorded conversations between threeand four-year-old children and their parents while they explored a city park and the park’s indoor education centre and found that the conversations in the park were more responsive and connected compared to those recorded indoors. Dr Thea Cameron-Faulkner, Senior Lecturer in Linguistics at the University of Manchester, and one of the study authors, said: “Our research demonstrates that natural environments can significantly enhance social interactions, in this case improving the quality of parentchild conversations.” Professor Merideth Gattis, one of the study authors, from Cardiff University’s School of Psychology, added: “One of the most challenging aspects of conversations is listening and responding to what other people say. The results of our study suggest that one simple way for people to improve this process is to spend time outdoors in
natural environments. The team focused on families with three- and fouryear-olds because at these ages most children have a lot to say, but coordinating with a conversational partner is sometimes challenging. Dr Cameron-Faulkner said: “Our study introduces a novel experimental design, which allows us to draw stronger causal conclusions about the benefits of natural environments compared to previous correlational studies reporting positive associations between green space and child outcomes.” Professor Courtenay Norbury of the School of Psychology and Language Sciences at University College London, added: “The language that children possess when they start school is highly predictive of later language competence and early scholastic and social success. Thus increasing opportunities for language learning that are embedded in rich social interactions is key to enhancing oral language competence.” The study ‘Responding to nature: Natural environments improve parent-child communication’ is published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology.

Seasonal affective disorder in kids - how can you help? Now that the summer sun has packed its hat away, it’s time to welcome the dreaded frost. Unfortunately, people’s moods can change at the same time as the seasons do. This is because sunshine can provide a dose of vitamin D that we may not fully receive by just eating food and this can help healthy cell and bone growth. It is also a key way to boost our energy levels and this, according to research, can help us become more resilient to physical illnesses. Here, we discuss seasonal affective disorder and how our kids can be affected by it. What is seasonal affective disorder? Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is officially defined as being a “depression associated with late autumn and winter and thought to be caused by lack of light”. Simply put, it can be described as a dark cloud above our heads caused, in some way, by dark clouds! It’s said to occur when your body’s internal clock and your brain and body’s chemicals all change. According to the NHS, one in 15 of us are expected to be affected by SAD in the months between September and April —December, January and February are expected to be the worst months for what people call the ‘winter blues’. The most common age group to suffer from SAD is those between 18 and 30 years old, with females the most likely to be affected, but it can begin at any age and to any gender. What are the symptoms of SAD? If you aren’t entirely sure if you – or someone close to you – has SAD, here are the symptoms that you should be aware: ● Sleep issues – normally oversleeping and struggling to stay awake ● Being lethargic ● Depression ● Overeating – particularly carbohydrates and sweet foods ● Loss of motivation ● Increased anxiety ● Social issues, including withdrawal from social situations ● Weakened immune system ● A persistent low mood ● Lack of interest in activities which were previously enjoyable SAD in children If a child suffers from seasonal affective disorder, there may be a noticeable drop in their school work, they may be less likely to want to play and 16 Parent Talk Christmas 2018
they may seem more irritable. Remember, your child may not be able to realise they have this condition or tell you how they are feeling. The first port of call, if you suspect your child has SAD, is to make an appointment to see the doctor. This way, they will be able to thoroughly check your child over and rule out any other possible reasons for the symptoms they are experiencing. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence recommends that the condition should receive the same treatment as other types of depression. It’s vital that you are supportive and non-judgmental to aid recovery. Remember, this isn’t a behavioural problem but is an issue regarding brain chemistry. Taking a little more time with them so they feel loved as well as being patient with them is also important to the treatment, as is eating healthily and maintaining a regular sleep pattern. By looking after their lifestyle habits, you will cut their stress levels which will help to ease the pressure faced from SAD. In some cases, adults are treated using light therapy. However, there’s no detailed evidence that this works and with side effects such as headaches, it’s not always recommended for children. Instead, try to ensure that your children are outside in natural sunlight when possible. If your child is put on antidepressants, make sure you are vigilant for any changes in behaviour and keep in regular contact with your doctor. Vitamin D3 supplements are another way to provide further support. Research in the area of vitamin D and depression is rapidly growing, with some studies highlighting a potential link between the two. Vitamin D is vital for general health including immunity, muscle function and bone density. Paediatrician Dr Cindy Gellner provides the following advice for parents and guardians: “Take their symptoms seriously. If your child has been diagnosed with SAD, talk about their feelings as they let you, and remind them that even though things may seem impossible right now, things will be better in the spring.” It’s important to be aware of any changes to our children’s temperament during the winter months. Remember, as is the case for many issues, with SAD in kids, if in doubt check it out.

EDUCATION, INFORMATION
Educating for a changing world at Queen's College The modern world is everchanging, with experts predicting that 50 per cent of the jobs our children will undertake don’t yet exist. So how can we ensure the education we provide prepares our students for the unknown? Our focus at Queen’s College is to equip children with the depth of knowledge, skill and confidence required to navigate a more complex world. Our students will have to be digitally proficient, adaptable, critical, reflective, open to a lifetime of learning and relearning, comfortable with change and have both empathy and a global outlook. Children at Queen’s College Pre-Prep and Nursery begin to develop these skills from the start of their educational journey. They are encouraged to think beyond the obvious, to ask questions, to problem-solve, to reflect on their learning and to apply their knowledge to reallife contexts.
UNITI
From Nursery upwards, children are encouraged to explain an answer they have given to a question, how they arrived at that answer and why they think it is right. It is important children learn to question from an early age. They need to consider solutions, try these out and determine which fits best. They need to analyse, apply, evaluate and then try again if needed. It’s also really important that children are able to take their learning beyond the classroom and apply it elsewhere. For example, a recent plastics workshop (pictured) impacted hugely on the children with many now taking an active interest in recycling at home and also encouraging their families to identify ways to reduce waste and protect the environment.
From inspiring our Reception children to engage more actively with stories – Why did he do that? What else could he have done? What might have happened then? What would you have done? How would he feel? – to our Year 2 re-enacting the water chain method used to try and extinguish the 1666 fire in Pudding Lane and considering other options – we actively encourage problem solving!
