Dear Readers...

Are you already feeling the need for half term? Not long to go now and then a chance for the kids to unwind a bit and relax after the busy routine of school. Are you also enjoying these lighter evening when every day it stays light for just that little bit longer. I fear I’m starting to become a little obsessive about it! I’m all for living in the moment but I have to say, I’m willing spring to get a move on and love the snowdrops when they appear. As for daffodils, each year I mean to write down when I spy the first one. This half term, there are some wonderful places to visit complete with undercover activities and there’s even some skating on offer. Meanwhile, the theatres have some great shows on so don’t forget to book your tickets! Once again, we have a fantastic selection of titles in our book review so read on and you might get some inspiration for World Book Day next month. Best wishes, Tamsin

How to look after children’s teeth? Dentist, bacteriologist and founder of The Breath Company Dr Harold Katz answers those niggling questions.

How many times a day should you brush your kids teeth/ what time? How long should kids brush their teeth for? In children as in adults, good oral health begins with a regular oral hygiene routine. Children should brush (or have their teeth brushed by an adult depending on their age) twice a day. Brush once in the morning and once at night before bedtime for at least two minutes at a time. Try and have a designated time as this will help to get your child used to it. Use a small, soft brush with gentle filaments that won’t damage the gum line, and a small amount of toothpaste (a smear for under three’s) and brush over every surface of the teeth with gentle pressure, remembering the gum line. Don’t rinse with water afterwards as this will wash away the fluoride in the toothpaste and make it less effective. One other important consideration is the type of oral care products that are being used by children. Many of them may be very acidic to give them a "candy-like" taste. That can be just as dangerous because tooth decay is caused by acids as well. Studies show that low pH mouthwash can erode tooth enamel just as much as too many sweets. Any foods they should never have? Contrary to popular opinion, children aren't born with an insatiable appetite for sugar. In cultures where sweets aren't given out routinely as rewards, neither children nor adults seem to crave them. Avoid using candy as a treat and your child won't make the automatic association between

sweets and happiness. You can maintain your child's oral health by making sure they eat a nutritious diet that's low in sugar, and practises regular oral hygiene, using products that are safe and effective. If you feel that you can’t avoid giving your child sweets completely then help to prevent problems by limiting the amount that they have and don’t give them sweet treats before bedtime when saliva flow naturally lessens. Would you recommend an age limit for sugary drinks? How many sugary drinks e.g. juice per day/week should be a limit? Water or milk only is recommended for children aged 3 and under. Take the recommended daily amounts of sugar for your child’s age group in to consideration and swap sugary drinks for older children to healthier alternatives such as plain water, lower-fat milks or no added sugar drinks. Added sugars shouldn’t make up more than 5% of the energy (calorie intake) you get from food and drink each day so try and stick to these guidelines. If you feel that you want to give your child a sugary drink then limit to a couple of occasions a week

The baffling words have been coined to help mums and dads cope with raising kids, with 84 per cent of parents frequently using them. Four in five parents say terms such as ‘threenager’ – meaning a three-year-old throwing a teenage-style strop – lightens the mood when they find parenting tough. But more than a third (35 per cent) admit to using the secret slang so their child doesn’t understand what they really mean. Overall the most-used quirky parenting word is ‘Mum Bun’ – a

hairstyle where harassed mums pull their hair into a topknot – used by three quarters of parents polled by ChannelMum. com. ‘Poonami’, the secret code for a baby’s explosive poo, is favoured by two thirds of mums and dads while three quarters frequently say they are ‘winging it’ – meaning trying to cope while other parents seem more organised. ‘Beige rainbow’ and ‘Freezer tapas’ are used by one in five families to describe ready-made playdate food such as chicken nuggets and chips. And half describe themselves as a ‘mombie’ - a mum who looks like a zombie through lack of sleep.

ChannelMum.com founder Siobhan Freegard said: “They say necessity is the mother of invention – so the UK’s mums and dads have invented some very colourful phrases to describe the ups and downs of parenting. “It’s fun but it has a serious side helping parents bond through tough times.” Other popular mottos include ‘ginwag’ meaning catching up over a glass of gin, while an ‘adult headache’ or hangover follows the next day. A quarter of parents confess they ‘iparent’ by giving kids a tablet device to keep quiet alongside one in nine who have a ‘mum spa’ when they open the dishwasher from the steam.

Family conversations MYTH: “4 in 10 families say devices mean they don’t talk enough as a family.” If the headlines are to be believed, we’ve all got a broadband-powered blockade cutting us off from family time. On the contrary. A recent survey conducted by Atomik research on behalf of Carphone Warehouse found that 2 in 5 of us say that the internet has given us more to talk about during family get-togethers and brought us closer together. So next time you unpocket your phone to talk your second cousin through the intricacies of your latest Instagram post, know that you’re strengthening your relationship in the process. While we’re on the subject of social media – that unrelenting cauldron of FOMO – it looks like most people abstain when with family: ● 20.8 million Brits say they never check social media at family get-togethers, and of those that do, over 87% say it’s only occasionally! If we are on social, it’s probably just face-swapping Dad with the family dog. ● Over two thirds of Brits take videos or pictures with family without uploading to social. ● Half of all Brits text or message family when under the same roof. ● 7 in 10 Londoners say apps have made their family lives easier. Seniors vs technology MYTH: “77% of older people would need someone to help walk them through the process of setting up a new device.” “Look, Grandad, get with the picture,” you say. Don’t be surprised if he whips out a smartphone and opens Snapchat on your bemused face. The older generation aren’t as clueless about technology as we might think. In fact, it’s helping them keep in touch with their nearest and dearest (via email, mostly). So, if you’ve not yet set up a WhatsApp group with your siblings, your parents, your grandparents — heck, even your great-grandparents — what are you waiting for? Grandad’s on-point gifs await. Fortunately, the doomsday headlines haven’t fooled most of us. 3 in 5 of us agree that the older generation is more tech-savvy than you might expect.

You might discover she’s got more going on in that slender block of aluminium than you thought. ● More than half of Britain say the internet allows younger generations to teach older generations. ● Almost 4.5 million Brits aged 55+ say they check social media during family time. ● 1 in 4 adults aged 55+ say apps have made their family’s lives much easier. Dining with technology MYTH: “On average 11.4 million tech devices such as smartphones and tablets to laptops and iPods are brought to family meal.” Apparently modern family dinner time means a fork in one hand and a smartphone in the other… We beg to differ. In reality, 86% of Brits say they’d be happy to spend time with family without a second glance at tech, with 56% of them describing going techfree with family as “a piece of cake”. Sounds delicious. That isn’t to say there isn’t the odd straggler though: ● 6% of 55-64-year olds and 5% of 18-24-year olds say they couldn’t manage to get through a family get-together without technology, but they can do so with their friends. As you side-eye the youngest in your family for becoming absorbed in Netflix during family time, you might be missing the fact that the oldest in your family is doing the exact same thing. ● Over half of all Brits say they abstain from tech in some

way when spending time with family. ● Over half of Britain aren’t convinced that the internet makes people retreat into a digital world. ● People in London and the North East are most likely to say their family relationships will suffer without internet. Tech vs family time MYTH: “Nearly a third of 16-24-year olds report feeling lonely all or some of the time because of tech.” Think tech is ruining our social lives? Think again. 19 million Brits say the internet, apps and tech haven’t negatively affected their family life. And those young people we worry so much about? 36% of 18-24-year olds happily state that the internet has brought their family closer together. In fact, only a mere 3% of Brits are willing to say they’d rather lose a leg or flee the country than spend time with family. That spirit of togetherness we thought we’d lost? It’s alive and kicking! So, channel all that worrying energy to finally beat your wily brother at charades instead, or to show your cousins who’s boss on FIFA 19. ● 1 in 4 Brits say video chat apps allow them to keep in touch with family more than before. ● For 45 million Brits, shopping is their top activity to do regularly online. ● People in Wales are the most enthusiastic about spending time with family without tech. ● People in East Anglia are the most averse to spending time with family without tech.

Fun gardening projects with Monkton Elm Even though the weather outside is still decidedly wintery, there are several garden projects you can get your children to have a go at now to keep them occupied and interested - with a little education thrown in too! There is a lot of emphasis on recycling at the moment, and there are several ways of incorporating this with your children when gardening by using items that you no longer need, have outlived their usefulness or are simply packaging. An easy one to begin with would be toilet roll or kitchen roll tubes. These make excellent seed pots start collecting them now and around April time, when the weather is warmer, simply fill with compost (stand them in a seed tray or other container and tie a piece of string round

them to keep them upright) and sow seed in the top. These work incredibly well for large seeds such as beans, peas, sunflowers and pumpkins; a single seed should be pushed down a couple of cm into the compost in each. Keep moist and warm at all times in a light place (a window sill is ideal) and when early summer is here, the whole tube with its young plant can be planted out into the garden to grow on. Labelling these pots is another recycling project to try. Many different items can be repurposed – corks, wooden spoons, pegs and lolly sticks all look fantastic painted in a range of bright colours. Use environmentally safe paint, allow to dry and then write the name of the plant on each one with a permanent marker. A

Family Skating Fun at Farrington’s! February Half Term is a tricky one – we’re still in the midst of winter and so finding weatherproof activities for the family can sometimes be a challenge. Farrington’s

are known for their seasonal events and for February Half Term, they’re hosting a skating experience minus the chill factor! From Saturday 16th until Sunday 24th February the Farm Shop, Café and Playbarn will have an all-weather synthetic skating rink open under the cover of their barn. Unlike a traditional ice rink, a synthetic rink is not cold or wet, but you can still have all the fun of gliding and sliding! A synthetic rink is also more environmentally friendly, because it doesn’t require great amounts of power to keep it frozen. Plus synthetic ‘ice’ is a more forgiving surface than real ice and younger children soon find their feet – or there’s always the skate aid penguins! Farrington’s also have an indoor soft play with their Cowtastic Playbarn. During the week of skating, you can get a child’s Dual Entry Ticket for both a session of skating and indoor soft play for only £8.95, or you can just skate for £5.95 (minimum age 3, children under 8 must be accompanied by an adult when skating). Simply make a couple of holes in the sole to allow for drainage, then fill each welly with some multipurpose compost. At this time of year, planting colourful primroses looks fantastic. Children can then use colourful marker pens, stickers or paint to embellish the welly itself. A pair standing on your front doorstep makes a wonderful welcome!

Pier helps girl take a step closer to her dream of walking A four-year-old girl’s dream of walking for the very first time could soon come a step closer with the help of Weston-superMare’s Grand Pier. The iconic seafront attraction is playing host to The Grand Ball on Saturday 23 March which will raise funds to send Rosie-May Edwards (pictured) to America for potentially life-changing surgery. Rosie, who lives on Weston’s Bournville estate with parents Josie, 21, and Simon, 24, has diplegic cerebral palsy and is unable to walk. Her family want to raise £80,000 which will enable her to go to America for a procedure called Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) which could give her the opportunity to take her very first steps. She will also need to undergo several weeks of intense physiotherapy treatment in America after the operation. Josie said: “Rosie’s life is very difficult, and every day is a struggle. She needs constant help as she can’t get anywhere on her own. She gets very frustrated when she can’t do something but she is very determined and tries so hard. “She is a happy little girl when she’s playing at home but when she’s at school or around other children her frustration really shows when she sees them doing things that she can’t do, and she becomes very upset. “She frequently asks why she can’t walk and be like other children her age. Her legs are constantly crossed over and it’s almost impossible to part them due to her having such tight muscles in her upper legs and hips. Rosie’s parents found out about the surgery in March 2018 and immediately started a fundraising campaign, with activities such as a sponsored walk, cake sales, Christmas stalls, car boot sales and others. So far, they have raised more than £9,000 and are hoping to raise a lot more at the Grand Ball, which will be a glittering evening featuring a three-course meal, live band, a photo booth, raffle and an auction, with exciting items such as a one-hour flying lesson up for grabs. Rosie often enjoys visiting

the Grand Pier, with the 1p and 2p machines being among her favourites, as she enjoys inserting the coins and watching what happens to them. Josie said: “I spoke to another mum who raised funds for her little boy a few years ago, and she suggested a ball would be a great idea. “The Pier is very popular and we thought its lovely seafront location made it the perfect venue for our fund-raiser. “The events team at the pier have all been really helpful, supportive and friendly, I can’t thank them enough. They have given us lots of ideas of what to have at the event and have always been very quick to answer any questions I’ve had.” Tables for ten for the event can be booked for £400 (£40 per person). She took the name of Margot Fonteyn early on in her dance career. It was adapted from her own first name and her mother’s maiden name.

How old was Margot Fonteyn when she started ballet? She was aged four and it was her mother who signed her up for dance classes. What roles did she perform? She made her professional debut (start) as a snowflake in The Nutcracker before stepping into leading roles as

principal ballerina with The Royal Ballet at Covent Garden Opera House and performing in the five great ballet classics - Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, Nutcracker, Giselle and Coppélia. What made her so special? Margot Fonteyn was captivating on stage. She was lucky that she had an ideal physique for a ballet dancer, as well as being an intensely musical dancer and a wonderful actress.

Who was her most famous dance partner? Her dance partnership with Rudolf Nureyev towards the end of her career won them both worldwide fame. After their first performance together in 1962, they received 23 curtain calls. However, Margot Fonteyn was an international star long before Nureyev. Margot Fonteyn married a diplomat in 1965 but always remained close to Nureyev until she died at the age of 71.

Families invited to take on UK’s biggest cycling, walking and scooting school challenge Families are being invited to take up the Big Pedal 2019 – the UK’s largest cycling, walking and scooting challenge for schools. This year’s competition is backed by Angellica Bell, British television, radio presenter and cycling advocate, who took on the ‘Tour de Celeb’ in 2016 where she found her love for cycling. Organised by the walking and cycling charity Sustrans, the competition will run from Monday 25 March to Friday 5 April and will encourage young people from across the UK to travel by bike, foot or scooter for their journey to and from school. During the 10 days, participating primary and secondary schools will compete with one another to make the most journeys by bike, foot or scooter. New research shows four in ten children are breathing toxic air at school, leaving pupils at an increased risk of developing lifelong conditions including asthma. Walking and cycling can play a key role in improving air quality outside the school gates while helping to boost children’s activity levels. Angellica Bell, who is backing the campaign, said: “I’m delighted to be supporting this

year’s Big Pedal. It’s a fantastic way to encourage more children to cycle, walk or scoot– doing wonders for their health and the environment around them. “I hope as many schools as possible sign up for the challenge and inspire children and families across the UK to get on their feet, scooter or bike for their journey to school.” Xavier Brice, CEO at Sustrans, said: “The Big Pedal may only run for two weeks but can leave a lasting effect on the way children travel to school by showing parents what’s possible and how easy it can be to leave the car at home for a few extra journeys a week. “With scores of schools already confirming that they will be closing surrounding streets to cars for this year’s Big Pedal, we are confident that 2019 will be even bigger and better than 2018 and demonstrate how people prioritised streets can create a much more pleasant and safer environment for children and parents to travel.” The theme of this year’s Big Pedal is ‘Travelling around the body’, with pupils tracking their progress on a wall chart, learning about the human body and how active travel benefits their health as they go.

This year’s competition aims to build on the success of 2018 which saw over 1,300 schools register to take part, with teachers, parents, siblings and pupils making more than a million journeys to school by bike or scooter. In addition, participants travelled almost 2.4 million miles – that is nearly 96 trips around the world – and saved 1179.2 kilo grams of nitrogen oxide (NOx) from being emitted into the atmosphere. With 60,538 gallons of fuel not being used on the school run, parents also saved over £330,000 on fuel. The Big Pedal 2019 is open to individual classes as well as whole schools, with hundreds of thousands of pupils expected to take part. For schools unable to take part in the main challenge there is also a one-day version, which can include cycling, walking and scooting activities during the school day as well as on the journey to school. Schools and classes will be entered into daily prize draws for rewards, including scooters, if more than 15% of a school cycle, walk or scoot on each day of the challenge. A recent survey showed that more than half of UK workers weren’t sure if they were in the right career, and 40% of them were confident they would change their career entirely in the next two years. If you’ve always dreamt of training to be a teacher, but were worried you’d left it too late, then read on. Here, recruitment agency Teacher Active explains the paths you can take to train to be a teacher, the funding available, and the benefits your life experience will bring to the classroom. Am I too old to be a teacher? The answer to that, quite simply, is no. Many people make the move into teaching after having fulfilling careers in various other industries. Whether you’re a fresh graduate or have 30 years’ experience in an entirely different industry, you are still capable of being a successful teacher, and can make a meaningful impact on the students you teach. So, there’s no need to worry about whether you’re too old, or if there’s a cut-off age limit. However, if you’re serious about training to be a teacher, it’s important you understand the steps involved. To get into teacher training, you’ll be required to have an A*-C in GCSE English and maths (in addition to science, if you want to work in a primary school), alongside a degree. If you don’t meet the entry criteria, then you may need to take an equivalent test to demonstrate your ability – your training provider will let you know if this is required. In order to enrol on a postgraduate teacher training course, you’ll need a degree or equivalent qualification. If you don’t have a degree, then you have two options: start working as an unqualified teacher, whilst going down the assessment only route to gaining qualified teacher status (QTS), or go down the further education teaching route, where you can gain qualifications while you teach, despite not having a degree. There are successful teachers across the country that have come from various industries – travel, construction and finance, to name a few. Whilst it may seem natural to teach a subject that is similar to what you have worked in over the years, it’s also perfectly normal to want

to teach a subject that isn’t relevant at all. If your chosen subject is one you studied to a high level at school or University, you can take a Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) course, that will help to refresh your knowledge and build upon your skills. SKE courses are fully funded, so you don’t need to worry about paying tuition fees. In some cases, you may be eligible for a training bursary of up to £5,600 to support you through the duration of the course. There are three types of funding that’s available if you’re training to be a teacher; and depending on your circumstances, you may be eligible for all three: ● Tax-free bursary/scholarship ● Tuition fee loan and maintenance loan ● Financial support if you have a disability, or are a parent There are tax-free bursaries and scholarships available of up to £30,000 if you’ve trained to teach a core academic subject such as maths, science or languages. To be eligible for this, you’ll need to have gained a first, 2:1, 2:2, Masters or PhD, and you can find out the availability by visiting https://getintoteaching.education.gov.uk/ funding-and-salary/overview If you already have a 2:1 degree or above, you can start earning a salary with Teach First. This is particularly popular with career changers, and enables you to take a two-year, paid position in a school, whilst

learning receiving worldclass teaching and leadership training. By the end of it, you’ll have received a fully-funded Postgraduate Diploma in Education and Leadership (PGDE), with the option to top it up to a Masters. With Teach First, you’ll receive the basic salary of an unqualified teacher, and in the second year, you’ll be paid the salary of a newly qualified teacher. The other option is School Direct, where you can combine learning with working, enabling you to earn a salary. At the end of it, you’ll have become a qualified teacher. You can find these courses on UCAS. Bring your invaluable life experience to the classroom If it’s concerns about your age that’s holding you back from enrolling in teacher training, then you shouldn’t let it stop you. In fact, having experience under your belt can be extremely beneficial, as your real-world experience is priceless, as it can’t be taught. Maturity, perspective and patience are all characteristics that are learnt over time in the working world, and will help you a great deal in the classroom. Plus, you’ll have so many life experiences that you’ll be able to apply to your teaching – whether that’s through your previous career, the places you’ve travelled to, or the people you’ve met. This is truly invaluable, and can make a huge positive impact on your students. To conclude, it’s never too late to train to be a teacher, and there are so many options available to you to start retraining. 94% of newly qualified teachers are employed in teaching just six months after completing their training, and you could be one of them. Whilst teaching may bring about its challenges, it’s a truly rewarding job, so if you’re considering retraining to be a teacher, we would urge you to go for it.
