Dear Readers...

Welcome to our Christmas issue and I hope you’re set for the build up towards the Big Day. In an effort to be super organised, my diary has been marked with ‘buy Christmas cards, tree, chocolates for tree’ in random places as far back as October even! Last year, our tree was skilfully positioned to reveal its better side, the inevitable outcome of buying the garden centre reject on 23rd December! That beats Father Christmas, too complacent by half and ordering online. Can you believe how lazy he can be – really! Serves him right as instead of accepting delivery for 23rd December, he hit the wrong button and ordered 3rd January! This year, I’m going to make the most of the wonderful opportunities for buying locally and really soak up the festive spirit. With best wishes for a very Happy Christmas.

On Holiday with the Animals in Glorious North Devon Not too far away, a great place to stay, lots of countryside interest, totally geared up to young families and with a track record going back to 1987, Torridge House Cottages have a vast experience of providing very good cottages in an environment ideally suited to youngsters of all ages.

There is an array of action and activities not just in the gardens and grounds of

Torridge House but also in the village and further a field. The timeless, gentle and relaxed setting on the edge of a tiny Devon village is home to nine cottages and a magnificent collection of breeding rabbits as well as guinea pigs, ducks and chickens. Tiger Lily the pony, kittens and growing piglets are also in residence for a good part of the year. Overlooking the Torridge Valley and with an amazing panoramic view of fields, forests and farms, the cottages are brilliantly situated for easy access to a wide variety of activities: Sandy beaches, historic market towns, fishing villages, family attractions, cycling, walking, gardens, tea rooms, potteries, pubs, moors and much more. The whole area is not only beautiful but also extremely welcoming and friendly. You could stay for weeks and still find plenty to do.

Or it is very easy just to relax and soak up the peace and fresh country air with the children enjoying playing in the huge gardens and you all helping to look after the animals and cuddling the baby bunnies. To find out more about Torridge House Cottages and what else is there, like the swimming pool which is a treat in the summer months, see www.torridgehouse.co.uk or, to chat to the family, phone 01805 622542.

Affordable alternative to high cost divorce The high cost of using solicitors often adds to the severe stress of a divorce or separation. Usually, solicitors charge up to £200 or more per hour and their fees can reduce family assets at an alarming rate. In addition, the mere act of going to a solicitor, and the adversarial process then followed, draw otherwise sensible people into protracted and expensive disputes.

One problem arises because solicitors can only act for their client; the husband or wife. This means that they cannot work with both parties together in order to seek a sensible settlement. Instead, solicitors talk to “the other side’s” solicitor, immediately doubling the cost. The process usually becomes contentious as each solicitor has to “win” something in order to justify his or her fees. This process seems designed to promote ill- will between husband and wife. Whatever good qualities they saw in each other that drew

them together in the first place are gradually forgotten. They are urged to emphasise the worst aspects of their once life time partner in order to improve the eventual settlement. Finally, any eventual settlement reached (usually years after they had started) is diminished hideously by legal costs. In other legal cases, there is another party to help bear the costs, in family law cases; the same family bears the costs for both sets of solicitors. Probably the most important result of the current adversarial process is that not only the financial security of children is put at risk but also their emotional security. While it may be impossible to shield children from all the effects of their parents separating, it makes it much worse if the separation becomes a legal dispute with each party seeking a victory over the other. On the other hand, while many people would prefer not to face the problems caused

by using a solicitor, they find it too daunting to handle a divorce and related matters on their own. There is another way to seek legal help with divorce and related matters – Bridge Law. As a consequence of the way we operate, we can offer low rates and fixed costs. This is partly because we do not carry the high overheads of firms of solicitors and partly because the client carries out much of the work involved directly, only assisted and supported by us when necessary. The partner involved, Stephen David, is a barrister with direct Public Access Accreditation and so can accept instructions without the need of a solicitor. It is a sad fact that performing arts is declining in England’s schools. But although the National Curriculum is struggling to find a place for it, performing arts is widely spoken about as being one of the most positive influences on a child’s life. It is not only for those that want to go on and make a career on the stage, performing arts stimulates all children’s creativity. This is where affordable, part-time theatre schools really come into their own. Razzamataz Yeovil is part of a national chain of theatre schools that achieved national recognition after a successful appearance on BBC’s Dragons’ Den when Duncan Bannatyne became an investor. Razzamataz encourages all children and young people to try their hand at performing arts because as well as it being thoroughly enjoyable, it has also been shown to

have a significant impact on the process of improving literacy levels in children. Educational achievement aside, what performing arts ultimately give children, are the skills with which to better express themselves, leading to increased confidence and self esteem. All these positive messages are now available to the preschool age group with Razz Tots. These parent assisted melody and movement classes are aligned to the Early Years Curriculum and are open for all children aged 2 to 3 years old. Razzamataz Theatre Schools offer exceptional part-time training in dance, drama and singing together with exciting opportunities to perform. Classes are for children from age 2 to 18 and allow students to experience a range of performance styles from classic West End musical theatre to funky street dance.

Christmas through the ages

Don’t lose your kids to the screen this Christmas The traditional family Christmas is under threat from mobile phones and tablets that are keeping kids fixed in front of screens and away from family activities.

A British software success story, Screen Time expects to see more thousands of downloads of its app on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day as worried parents around the world look to manage how much time their kids spend on their tablets and phones, many of which will be received as presents. The app - which has already has close to 1m downloads worldwide through the Google Play store - lets parents set limits on what applications can be accessed, when and for how long, all of which can be set and altered remotely. The brains behind Screen Time - dad of three Steve Vangasse is keen

to stress that this isn’t scaremongering, it’s simply a fact that is experienced every day as parents battle with their children over the balance between screen time and downtime. It was his personal experience wrestling with his three young children for control over the tablets that he had given them for Xmas in 2012 that led him to develop the app which is now a worldwide best seller. And the good news is, it needn’t be a battle. Thousands of happy parents have contacted Screen Time to thank them for the unique approach its app takes to managing downtime; namely encouraging parents to work with their children on setting limits around how long and what apps can be used and then even rewarding them with extra access if they’ve behaved well.

A perfect present ADOPT A DARTMOOR PONY – and follow its progress all year round! To help fund its vital work to preserve the traditional Dartmoor pony on Dartmoor, the Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust (DPHT) offers “A Dartmoor Pony Adoption Gift Pack”, suitable for anyone, of any age, who loves horses and ponies, but for whom buying a real one is simply not an option. By buying an Adoption, you will be funding the DPHT’s work to feed, care for and find homes for these ponies and to give them a basic education so that they are more suitable for domestic and conservation grazing homes than coming straight off the Moor as wild, untouched animals. Our charity’s aim is to ensure the continuation of the native Dartmoor pony gene pool and to preserve the iconic pony on the Moor, for future generations to enjoy. The cost is just £20 per year for UK residents: £25 for those who live abroad. The Adoption Pack includes a beautiful line drawing and an adoption certificate and you’ll also receive updates on the development and progress of the pony you have chosen over the following year. Ponies George, Charlie, Smartie and Rolo look forward to meeting you and to becoming part of your family! They live at the Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust Centre, at Parke, Bovey Tracey in Devon.

Visitors are welcome on Sunday afternoons, to groom and handle the ponies, find out all about them, follow their interesting lives, discover their true value and how important they are to the Dartmoor landscape. These characters have a vital role to play in demonstrating just how good Dartmoor ponies are as family pets and for riding, driving and conservation grazing: they are fundamental to the DPHT’s innovative education programme for young people who have a range of disabilities and/or challenging behaviour. Some of the incredible achievements we have had with students have happened through their work with these loving, gentle, patient but tough little ponies. The DPHT Adoption Scheme raises money to pay as part of its work to ensure that the traditional type of Dartmoor pony does not disappear. Single-coloured with long manes and tails, Dartmoor ponies still run wild and free on Dartmoor, but their numbers are in serious decline. If you are interested in adopting a Dartmoor Heritage Pony please look up our website www.dpht.co.uk or phone 01626 833234 If you simply wish to make a donation to assist with our work, please do get in touch – your support is greatly appreciated.

Walt Disney

December 5, 1901 – December 15, 1966

When Walt Disney was a young boy, growing up was quite different from what it’s like today. In the early 1900’s, television, computers, and radio hadn’t been invented yet. But young Walt didn’t need those things to imagine new worlds; he had big dreams and he loved to draw. As Walt got older, he had many responsibilities. He worked on his family’s farm, he delivered newspapers, and he even joined the Red Cross during the First World War. But he always found time to draw and to imagine. Walt and his older brother Roy went into business together when they were both young men. Although he was driven to succeed, Walt faced lots of challenges. When he decided to make the first cartoon film with sound, his distributors thought audiences wouldn’t like it. And when Walt wanted to create the first full-length animated movie, even Roy tried to convince him not to. But Walt went to work anyway, and the result was Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

Walt Disney Drawn from Imagination By Bill Scollon Disney Press

ISBN 9781423196471

Walt went on to oversee the creation of many feature films – both animated and live-action – a television show, and a theme park. Even Disneyland, the Happiest Place on Earth, had its doubters. But when Walt had an idea, he stuck with it. The official biography by Disney Press, is the perfect length for young readers, and the best introduction for any Disney fan wanting to learn about its founder.

Walt’s commitment and perseverance allowed him to make a colourful and unforgettable mark on the world he left behind. Extracted from Walt Disney: Drawn from Imagination, published by Disney Press, 2014

eBay helps wannabe Santas ‘shop the world’ from their sofas Christmas shopping can be hard work, but it’s easier if you’re sitting next to your Christmas tree with carols playing in the background and a glass of mulled wine while you shop on your iPad or mobile.

Online marketplace eBay offers the widest selection of gifts from retailers and partners across the globe, more than 70% of which are new or fixed price items. It has created top tips for treasure seekers keen to ‘shop the world’ from more than 800 million listings – finding the perfect presents for those you love without having to leave your sofa.

a general category on eBay (e.g. home & garden), a subcategory (e.g. garden furniture), a product, a brand, a style, a colour, a price – you name it. Once you have found the items which you like, place them in your own collection for the Christmas ultimate look book. TIP… Use the ‘best offers’ tool to see if a seller will do a deal. Some sellers say they’ll consider ‘best offers’ on buyit-now items. This is where you propose a figure, they then mull it over and tell you if it’s a goer.

What do you buy the sisterin-law who has everything?

eBay’s collections are a great place to get inspiration on what to buy the person with perfect taste, with the likes of Kelly Hosting Christmas and Hoppen and Sarah Beeney wanting to make it perfect? Create a look book and curating their own collections customise your searches. and guides on the season’s From the tree to the table latest trends. You’ll be inspired settings, wrapping paper, in no time. More than 70% of all listings ribbon or Santa outfit, you can now fine tune your searches. on eBay are ‘Buy it Now’ directly That means you can specify from a supplier or retailer.

Suppliers will normally list contact information, as well as displaying the stock levels on the individual products. If you are unsure, just get in touch. Keen to make it a ‘Savvy’ Christmas?

More than 140 high street brands sell direct on eBay and suppliers will normally list contact information, as well as displaying the stock levels on the individual products. eBay’s ‘Daily Deals Newsletter’ also helps shoppers find items at reduced prices, often at up to 60% off the normal retail price. TIP… Many people mistype their eBay entries. This English teacher’s nightmare is a bargain hunter’s dream. Wrongly-spelled products attract fewer bids because many people miss them. Forgotten someone?

We’ve all had that horrible moment when we realise we’ve forgotten to buy a Secret Santa present for the boss or a gift for your brother’s new girlfriend.

With the eBay mobile app you can quickly search for presents while you’re on the move – and if you shop from one of the 200,000 business sellers on eBay you’ll be able to collect your goods from your nearest Argos store. So there’s no need to worry about missing the postman or the last Royal Mail delivery. TIP… You can also find supercheap local bargains; sellers on eBay often specify items must be collected in person. As this often means fewer bids, there are bargains to be had and if you need a last minute gift, being able to pick something up makes it really easy. But what if they don’t like what I’ve bought them or it doesn’t fit?

Even those of us with impeccable taste sometimes get it wrong. But if the item you’ve bought has been sold the way most things are on eBay – new and fixed price, with no bidding, no waiting

– then you don’t need to worry with a minimum of 14 days to return your item. Still have doubts? For everything you buy on eBay, (including auction items eBay Money Back Guarantee covers around 99% of listings - excludes vehicles and houses), you’re covered by a simple promise:

get the item you ordered, or your money back. TIP… Shop safely, that bargain might be tempting but is everything as it seems? Shopping from reputable retailers, or a marketplace with a money-back guarantee such as eBay, ensures you’ll get the item you expected.

School run stress for parents With Christmas getting ever closer, parents across the country will be experiencing an increase of almost double on their stress levels as soon as their morning alarm clock sounds. New stress test results released by Allianz Insurance show that parents’ stress levels peak just before leaving the house to make the journey to school - at around 8.15am each week day morning. The impact of school run stress also stays with parents well into the day, not reaching lower levels until 2.30pm. Allianz Insurance has worked with Chartered Psychologist Dr. Simon Moore and Anglia Ruskin University Cambridge to measure the levels of cortisol (the stress hormone) in a group of UK parents as they undertook their morning routine. The research found that lingering stress levels affect parents whether they return home after dropping their kids at school or head to work, but almost a third agree that the school run can mess up timings for the rest of their day. In addition, a quarter of parents also admitted that the school run sets their mood for the rest of the day - good or bad! Francesca Keefe of Allianz Insurance said: “We insure millions of school runs and we wanted to understand how

they impact the lives of our customers every day. We know that stress has a negative impact on driving behaviour and with over half of the UK’s children travelling to school by car it’s important that parents are doing what they can to relieve any unnecessary stress before they get behind the wheel.” With the majority of parents not feeling confident about their morning running smoothly, Allianz Insurance has worked with Emily Leary, author of parenting and lifestyle blog ‘A Mummy Too’, to create tips for families on the school run this week: ● Put shoes, bags and coats in a reliable place upon arriving home so that there’s never the last minute panic as you hunt for a missing shoe ● Create a devoted drawer in each child’s chest of drawers for school uniform so they always know where to look when they are getting ready ● Make it the house rule that the kids have to have their uniforms on before they come down for breakfast ● Always check book bags after tea, to avoid missing school trip slips, or panic to make a World Book Day outfit in 30 minutes ● Create a shared family calendar, either on the wall, or on your phones / computers so that everyone is always aware

of changes and variations to the usual routine ● Once you’re ready to leave, have a little race to see who can get their shoes and coats on the fastest. This motivates the children to get off the sofa and to the door Chartered Psychologist Simon Moore who undertook the stress tests for Allianz Insurance said: “Making sure parents are feeling as little stress as possible before they start the drive to school is crucial to ensuring road safety on the school run and there’s lots that can be done to relieve stress. Many stressed people don’t get enough sleep and taking the chance to ‘switch off’ and get an extra half an hour in bed can work wonders. Laughing also releases stress busting hormones that will help every family member to feel a bit better about the morning routine.” The stress tests also found that the school run isn’t an entirely negative experience for parents, with all of those participating feeling a sense of achievement when they complete the school run – regardless of whether it went well or not. Parents feel the best things about the school run are spending time with their children, hearing about their day on the way home and being organised and on time.

Sherborne Prep Year 8 thrill the audience with their performance of “The Ash Girl” The recent Year 8 production of “The Ash Girl” - a contemporary version of Cinderella - was a runaway success. The Powell Theatre was packed to the gunnels and the main protagonists did a fantastic job of portraying the emotional sides of their characters and the cast of creatures and demons in the woods were very believable too. Unlike the original Cinderella, this was no fairy tale, but it did still have a happy ending! For more photos and a more detailed write-up have a look at the website news: www. sherborneprep.org

All year groups, from Nursery upwards, have a chance to participate in a drama performance and there are also numerous music and performing arts opportunities for children throughout the year. It is opportunities like this that make Sherborne Prep

Exciting opportunities at Wellington If it is academic results you are concerned about for your child, then look no further than Wellington School. We had superb GCSE and A level results across all subjects with 5 pupils taking up Oxbridge places and many more to other Russell Group Universities. Pupils study the more rigorous IGCSE in Maths and Science as well as Latin and Greek and the emphasis is strongly academic.

But Wellington has so much more to offer than exam results. With the appointment of our Director in Residence, the performing

arts go from strength to strength. From the riproaring success of ‘Our House – the Madness Musical’ in the summer to serious Chekhov productions and a huge range of bands, orchestras and ensembles, the whole school is taking advantage of a range of exciting opportunities. Our superb Chapel Choir performs regularly and our versatile musicians swept the board recently in singing competitions and exam results. We have superb sports facilities and a specialist strength and conditioning

coach who is taking fitness to new levels across all sporting disciplines. Steffan Jones, ex Somerset Cricketer is also developing an elite cricket programme, so Wellington is the place to be for sport. We nurture and teach pupils from 3-11 in the Prep School and 11-18 in the Senior School, and we are justly proud of the rounded, all-encompassing education they receive. We call it “Learning For Life”. Do come along and see us, we would be delighted to show you how exciting our school is.

Learning from the inside out Explorium, the Creative Learning Centre, near Street, is now entering its second year with a reputation for encouraging all children to excel. Their young writers are being published and winning awards, their work is being broadcast on local radio, and young film makers are receiving positive accolades from award winning directors.

“We start by finding out what children are passionate about, where their strengths lie and what talents they have. So they are learning, as we call it, from the inside out. Then we help them overcome obstacles that stand in their way to achieving excellence,” says Julia Black, Explorium’s founder. Their inside out approach seems to be a hit with parents, as much as with the children. ‘Love it! Child-centred and based on children’s interests and talents - I think it’s fabulous and encourages children to blossom. My son is full of enthusiasm when I collect him and is hugely motivated,” says Holly, mother of seven year old Joseph, who attends after school. The comment Julia hears most from parents is that their children love attending Explorium but they

don’t necessarily realise they are learning because they are having so much fun. It seems, however, that parents are confident deep learning is taking place as their children can’t stop talking about what they have been doing. Children can attend Explorium during the day or after school and they have access to a huge range

of digital technology and software, such as video cameras, iPads, Macs, PCs, and sound recording equipment. If you are interested in finding out more about Explorium, you can attend one of their open days, with the first one on 20th January. If any book could capture winter, this is it! This is a superb, haunting, ghost story from the wonderful Kate Mosse. Set in the early part of the twentieth Century in a quiet Sussex village, this eerie, compelling story absorbs the reader entirely from its beginning, as the story deepens, unfolds and unashamedly draws us in. From its evocative description of landscape and place, the tale brings to life the myths and legends of a past time, creating a world in which characters are living alongside their own histories - as forgotten memories and people resurface and influence the present. A brilliant winter’s tale...

Now this is a treat! Set in 1922 in a London still reeling from the First World War - a widow (Mrs Barber) and her unmarried daughter make a decision to turn their home into a boarding house, in order to earn a living and survive. This new arrangement and enforced intimacy with their new lodgers, has a profound effect on both women, who must now confront the complex emotions of passion and resentment that surface as a result. What follows is a wonderfully written, complex and tender story, showing Waters at her most unique and profound.
