Dear Readers...

Well where did the year go? This time last year I remember writing how I was going to be super organised and buy Christmas tree, cards and chocolates for tree way in advance. The good news is that I pounced, yes pounced on chocolates for the tree much to the bewilderment of our kids. I must have told them several times over how smug I’m feeling having bought them. They can remember last year’s ‘crisis’ but loved the lumps of toblerone wrapped in tin foil and precariously perched on the branches. Stir up Sunday, however, passed in a blur so perhaps not quite so smug after all! This month, the Good Witches of the North have come up with some great ways to get set for Christmas and no surprise that it’s all about staying in control and remembering to look after yourself – see p19. No prizes for being a crumpled, exhausted heap and Little Miss Miserable on the big day. So, if you’re reading this, you’re already on the right track. National Trust Christmas Craft & Food Fayre festive destinations at the Willows & Wetlands Centre, Stoke St Gregory, TA3 6HY 12th December 2.00-5.30pm

This Christmas discover in one festive season two great destinations with the National Trust in South Somerset: Barrington Court and Montacute House. Barrington Court, open weekends 11am-4pm, allows you to enjoy the traditional Christmas with Santa in his grotto; the splendid Court House decorated in lights, colours and decorations reflecting the

Edwardian period when the Lyle family were in residence. Montacute House on the other hand with its ‘Lantern of Light’ opening will be lighting the house and gardens in dramatic style so visitors can both view the house from the grounds and view the grounds from the house. The house will offer wonderful viewing points and of course will be very atmospheric whilst being explored in special lighting. The property will be open from 11am-7pm on these special weekends throughout December and the lights are turned on at 3pm. The Willows & Wetlands Centre will play host once again to a Christmas Craft & Food Fayre on 12th December. With the Centre now playing host to a number of specialist craft units, this has turned into a bit of an annual extravaganza. One of the highlights will be a lantern parade, around dusk, with children from Stoke St Gregory school, and there will also be entertainment from all over the Levels, including carols sung by the Jubilee Singers, hand bell ringing with the Fosse Bells and Martock Christian Fellowship will be performing their puppet show.

In between the assorted entertainments, there is the promise of 35 stalls devoted to all things Christmassy - jewellery, handcrafted bottles, local Somerset wine, Somerset cider, fudge, bread, cheeses, jams and chutneys to name but a few. And, of course, as only fitting there will be a Christmassy Willow Workshop for the children who bring an adult along too. The Willow basket shop, Lemon Tree Coffee House and craft studios will be open all day as normal. Meanwhile, local wildlife groups will be on hand to talk and provide information about

the Levels and the amazing array of wildlife it is home to, so pop along and have a chat with the RSPB and Somerset Wildlife Trust. All proceeds of this event

The Trafagar Square Christmas Tree Every year in November, the people of Oslo in Norway present England with a beautiful 20 metre high, Norwegian spruce tree.

✱ The tree is selected from forests just outside Oslo with great care, usually months in advance. It is transported to the UK by sea and then completes its journey to Trafalgar Square by lorry. It is then decorated with ornaments and strings of white lights and forms the focal point for the traditional singing of Christmas Carols. ✱ It will stay in the square until 5th January. This year marks the 68th tree to come to London from Oslo. ✱ The first tree was brought over in

to Britain for their friendship during the second world war. The tree has become a symbol of the close relationship between the people of Norway and Britain and there is a plaque at the foot of the tree that reads:

Warning to parents over glue ear as winter sets in The National Deaf Children’s Society is advising parents to look out for symptoms of glue ear this winter. 80% of children will be affected by the condition before they reach the age of 10 with the illness being more frequent in winter months as colds and infections reach a seasonal high. Glue ear is a build-up of sticky fluid behind the eardrum that prevents sound passing through the ear effectively. If glue ear goes untreated it may mean children do not learn as well as they cannot hear their teacher. They may also become frustrated, feel left out and become quiet and withdrawn as they cannot follow what is going on around them as easily. However, help is at hand through the National Deaf Children’s Society’s resource, available for parents to better

understand this common childhood condition. Emma Dolan’s 4 year old son, Fletcher, was first diagnosed with glue ear when he was 2 years old. Emma, from Hull, says: “I started to have concerns about Fletcher when he was 18 months old as he didn’t copy speech in the same way other child his age did and he didn't seem to enjoy nursery rhymes or bedtime stories. Things became worse when, instead of communicating with me, he would get attention by throwing food or banging his head on the floor – it was terrifying. “It was initially put down to bad behaviour but I knew it was something more than that – it was frustration. “I was so relieved when we were given the diagnosis of glue ear that I cried all the way home. I knew something could be

done to help my son. He was put on the waiting list for grommets and speech therapy. “Once the grommets were fitted we immediately noticed Fletcher was much calmer and, slowly, he started babbling away. I was so proud the first time I heard him singing The Alphabet Song!” The National Deaf Children’s Society’s glue ear resource is free to download from the website, and provides impartial advice and information on the illness including the causes and possible treatments. Vicki Kirwin, Audiologist at the National Deaf Children’s Society, says: “This winter, thousands of children will be affected with glue ear, so it’s important to seek advice if you notice any symptoms with your child. If untreated, it can result in delays in speech, language, social and educational development.”

People aren't mind readers, so have the confidence to speak out in a clear and pleasant yet firm way. ❆ ❆ ❆ Hold Your Boundaries People will push and make demands of you more than ever over the festive season, so make sure you hold your personal boundaries around space, time, and anything else. The best way to enjoy your Christmas is to not be stressed and frazzled by the time it arrives, so have the confidence to be a little bit selfish and do what you need to do to take care of yourself in the run up to it. Keeping yourself well, first and foremost, is the surefire way to do this. ❆ ❆ ❆ Notice where your head is at! Are you already pushing the ghosts

of Christmas past into the picture? If you're not careful, by anticipating stress, things going wrong and not being able to hold it together, we can end up creating the very things we dread because we are fixed on them. Remember, everything that happens is down to you, so shift your attention: i) Take the time to really notice the things you are worried about, either consciously or unconsciously, and write them down. ii) Go back to your list and reread it. Then simply re-write it again. So for example, "I'm really worried that Auntie Sal and Bob will end up in a political argument after dinner" becomes something productive such as, "after dinner this year, I'm going to move everyone into the lounge for drinks, mince pies and games." You can help other people break their bad habits by breaking away from your part in them. ❆ ❆ ❆ Don't sweat the small stuff the right crockery, the lights being in the right place, the right candle scents, the right wrapping paper - who actually cares about this stuff, and who will remember it in years to come? Have the confidence to just accept that it is what it is none of that stuff determines how much fun you will have or happiness you will feel. Live in the ‘is' world, not in the ‘should' world. It is a far happier place. Put that attention on connecting with people, listening, talking and creating time and space for people instead of things. ❆ ❆ ❆ Celebrate those you can't be with - whether they are in a different country or no longer with you, it can be easy to spend time missing people and feeling sad. Instead, find a small ritual you can do to toast them. Music can be great for this. So if your sister is miles away, put on her favourite record, Skype her and have a dance together despite the time difference. If your mum is no longer around, buy her favourite tipple for everyone, play her favourite tune, and toast her memory before exchanging a funny story each about her. Don't shy away from it - have the confidence to include them all in your celebrations in a positive way and create more treasured memories. ❆ ❆ ❆ If it begins to get too much… - don't be afraid

to simply ask for help. Other people can't always see how you feel unless you speak up. If you nip the stress in the bud, then nobody may know, but if you let it build up then inevitably it will explode out in one way or another. So, if you feel like things are too much, have the confidence to ask friends and family "might you be able to help me with x?" Most of the time people will only be too happy to do their part, especially at Christmas. There is no happiness in being a martyr! ❆ ❆ ❆ If you are overwhelmed by party invitations, then be realistic about which ones you can attend. Of course it is nice to be in demand, but overcommitment can be incredibly stressful at Christmas time. Instead, have the confidence to limit yourself and choose a couple that you would really like to go to. Everyone is in the same boat so people won't be offended if for others you just go for an hour to say hello, happy Christmas, and raise a glass. Sometimes making this agreement with a friend can help too - you both agree to go for an hour and then leave together. If you have an ally you are less likely to over-indulge and you will both still get to bed at a decent hour for those all-important zzzz's. ❆ ❆ ❆ Plan a few outfit combinations ahead of time, accessories and all - a few party combos and a few casual combos can really take the stress out of knowing what to wear on the day/night. Make an event of it, put on your favourite tunes, lock the door and have some fun putting some combos together so you know you have just the thing when the moment hits. Most importantly, have the confidence to embrace who you truly are, accept the body you have, focus on the bits of you that you love, and make sure that inner voice talks to you in the kind of loving, supportive way you would expect from a best friend. ❆ ❆ ❆ Stagger it! - Take your time and buy a present a week. This way you are way more likely to stick to your budget, you'll be confident that you've taken the time to consider and buy something that the recipient will love, you'll avoid the stresses and also stay well clear of an excess of Christmas

music being piped into your brain! Shopping online is an even better way of doing this, as long as you remember delivery windows and the fact that every click does actually equal cash! ❆ ❆ ❆ Move, laugh and talk Being active is a great way to feel energised and confident, so don't hide away in a corner at parties or slump on the sofa after Christmas dinner. Remember this is your Christmas and you're going to have fun, so don't be afraid to dance around the room. If things get overwhelming, go for a walk, call a friend, reach out, find the funny side, cry when you want to cry, laugh when you want to laugh, talk it out to the dog, the cat, the pigeons… whatever you need to do to release the inevitable pressure cooker - do it. It helps to keep life, and especially Christmas, in perspective! ❆ ❆ ❆ Nutrition and water - ‘tis the season to be jolly, to eat, drink and be merry of course. And do so! Life is to be lived after all. However, dull as it sounds, you'll be much more healthy, confident, energised and ready to have fun if you make sure you also drink enough water and get your balance of good stuff like fruit and veg. A good probiotic and milk thistle can help process all sugary stuff, including the bubbles and other booze, and keep your system in balance all the way into the New Year. ❆ ❆ ❆ Be your own present to yourself - unless you have the confidence to put yourself at the centre of your world, you risk losing yourself amidst the whirlwind of shopping bags and wrapping paper. You are too important to be lost! By nurturing yourself, being kind to yourself (and that includes forgiving and letting yourself off the hook regularly) it will help you to not just get through the festivities, but be present in the moment and enjoy it too! If you catch your brain worrying about what's gone wrong or getting anxious about what to do next, just stop - pay attention to what you have - smile and say thank you.
