Half Term Activities and Exhibitions at the Museum of Somerset There’s plenty on offer at the Museum of Somerset this half term, for parents and children. On Sunday 14 February, inspired by our very special historic building, we will be holding Castle’s Day. There will be activities, re-enactments, crafts, dressing up and tours of the 12th century Taunton Castle. The day is from 10am to 5pm, £3 adult, £1 child. Throughout the half term week there will be fun and creative drop-in activities for children inspired by our
If there is one thing you can count on, it is that at some point you are going to get caught out by a summer shower or a wet and cold winter downpour at some juncture throughout the year! Bad weather can mean that opportunities for outdoor play can be halved unless you have the right protective clothing - a recipe for frustrated children and frazzled parents! Made from the very highest quality Teflon-coated nylon, Hippychick’s All in Ones are completely waterproof,
I’ve never really paid a huge amount of attention to February. As there’s no February birthday in our household, it has always been a rather uneventful month but this year there’s no excuse! Pancake Day, Valentine’s Day, Chinese New Year and Leap Year mean there’s plenty to celebrate. Another important day is Safer Internet Day on 9th February and it’s well worth looking at some of the practical guides on social media helping parents keep their children safe online, see p19 for details. Social media and online safety is also covered in one of my ‘Editor’s Choice’ – WHATEVER! A down to earth guide to parenting teenagers . That next step is just around the corner! And on that subject, don't forget to drop in and welcome some rather wonderful new arrivals. First of all, stop by the tiger enclosure and say hello to our new male tiger, Fabi, then call in at the cheetahs to see our lovely
female cheetah Jahzara, who has just arrived from a zoo in the Netherlands. During half term at Paignton Zoo there will be special stuff going on all over the place. The first thing to do is to pick up your Marvellous Mammals activity booklet at the main entrance when you arrive. This includes your trail sheet and colouring-in activities and other fun stuff for kids which you can take home to enjoy. There will be a red panda talk at 12.00pm daily. You’ll be able to create your own animal
puppet in the covered area next to the big red Education building. And there will be special tiger enrichment sessions from Monday to Thursday at the big cat talk, when they will be given piñatas to play with. Meanwhile, there will soon be a new house for the residents of Lemur Wood, the Hangout play area is going to be rebuilt and after that the Lakeside play area will be dismantled and new equipment installed, so there will be lots of new stuff to see and do!

The Palace This Half Term, The Bishop’s Palace & Gardens in Wells will kick off its yearly programme of Family Activities with two childfriendly events. For 2016 the Palace has moved its Family Activity Days to Fridays due to the popularity of the events, previously held on Wednesdays, in 2015. Events & Exhibitions Manager, Jonathan Sawyer, said “During 2015 we saw a huge increase in the numbers attending our Family Activity Days during the School Holidays. We took feedback from our visitors and found that many of our local families would prefer to come on a day that isn’t a Market Day,
so that they can park in town more easily.” The Family Garden Activities will take place on Mondays during 2016 and the Family Activity Days will take place on Fridays. On Monday 15th February from 11am-3pm there will be a Family Garden Activity entitled ‘Plot Your Veg Plot’ in the Community Garden. Led by Community Gardener Amanda Clay, the session will focus on planning what to grow in your garden this year. Amanda will have advice, tips and hands on fun for all ages! On Friday 19th February from 11am-3pm the first of
our Family Fun Fridays will be based on the theme of ‘Birds’. Join our crafty team leaders to make bird feeders, feather fans and starling finger puppets,
then take the chance to follow our ‘twitchers trail’ through the house and gardens, hunting for avian answers! All activities are included in standard admission.

Chance for children to get creative with cupcakes YOUNGSTERS from Somerset can have a go at decorating cupcakes during workshops being held at a garden centre in the county this half-term holiday. The workshops will take place in the Pondside Café at Monkton Elm Garden & Pet Centre from February 15 until 19 from 10am until 3pm. Denis Guillemin, Catering Operations Manager at the award-winning, independent, family-run garden centre at Monkton Heathfield near Taunton, said: “We’re putting on our cupcake decorating workshops so families can get out of the house this half-term and come along together to take on a task that will use all their creative skills. “We’re challenging children to decorate already baked cupcakes with their best designs. The workshops will cost £3 per child and everything needed
for decorating will be provided on the day. Children will be able to take their cupcakes home with them after the workshop to share with their friends and family.” The workshops will run from 10am until 3pm and will last approximately 20 minutes. No booking is necessary. All children must be accompanied by an adult during the workshop. Members of the garden centre staff will also be on-hand to help youngsters decorate their cupcakes. Denis added: “We hope lots of children come along and get involved, it’s a great way for youngsters to meet other children, make friends and have fun doing a creative activity.” The cupcake decorating workshops will take place every day from Monday, February 15 until Friday, February 19 from 10am until 3pm in the Pondside Café.

We believe that learning should be an experience – one that sticks in the mind and is carried with us during our lives. Throughout the Pre-Prep we ensure that our teaching is interactive, engaging and child-centred. Recently Year 2’s learning has had a history focus with a particular interest in the Victorians. At Radstock Museum our pupils dressed up as Victorian school children and took part in a lesson. It was not a very pleasant experience and most of them agreed that they preferred Millfield PrePrep today to the schools of yesteryear! The children also learnt about the famous engineer, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, travelling to Bristol to visit the ss Great Britain. They took part in a workshop on Brunel as a designer and engineer and
toured the museum before boarding the ship. Dressed in Victorian clothing, they imagined launching the ship and waving goodbye to their loved ones. Through these interactive, hands-on experiences children gain a real sense of what life was like in the past. They develop their sense of chronology and begin to understand some of the reasons why we live as
we do today. They learn to question and wonder and we actively encourage them to use enquiry-based learning as a way of discovering answers to questions for themselves. Feel free to come and visit us at Millfield Pre-Prep; we will welcome you warmly and our children will tell you all about how we learn here and why they enjoy their time at school so much.

Chinese New Year
For two weeks China turns red for Chinese New Year as it represents luck and happiness, key for the year ahead. It’s a time to be generous and give money to children wrapped in red paper, while friends and loved ones exchange poems on red paper. It’s a time to think about ancestors, and wish peace and happiness to those close to you. The holiday ends with the Festival of Lanterns, as many large communities stage the famous Dragon Dance. Fireworks, parades, lanterns, presents, and feasts: these are some of the joys experienced by all who observe Chinese New Year.
The Chinese Year of the Monkey begins on 8th February 2016 and ends on 27th January 2017. Signs of the Chinese Zodiac

e Day? When is Pancak
Pancake Day has been celebrated by Britons for centuries. Known also as Shrove Tuesday, its date changes every year depending when Easter falls but it is always the day before Ash Wednesday (the first day of Lent), and always in February or March. It can be any Tuesday between 3 February and 9 March. an? ve Tuesday me What does Shro
The word shrove is a form of the English verb shrive, which means to obtain absolution (forgiveness) for one's sins by way of confession and penance. Shrove Tuesday gets its name from the custom for Christians to be "shriven" before the start of Lent. Pancake Day? te ra b le e c e w o Why d
Traditionally, pancakes were eaten on this day to use up rich, indulgent foods like eggs and milk before the 40-day fasting season of Lent began which is why the French call it mardi gras (fat Tuesday). Although it is enshrined in Christian tradition, some believe that Pancake Day might originate in a pagan holiday, when eating warm, round pancakes, symbolising the sun, was a way of encouraging the arrival of spring.

So much on offer at Wellington School
If it is academic results you are concerned about for your child, Wellington School has just what you need. We have superb GCSE and A level results across all subjects and 5 of our pupils have just received Oxbridge offers. Last year, over 70% went off to prestigious “Russell Group” Universities. Pupils study the more rigorous IGCSE in Maths and Science as well as Latin and Greek and the emphasis is strongly academic. But Wellington has so much more to offer than exam results. With a Director in Residence, the performing arts go from strength to strength. From the rip-roaring success of spectacular musicals to serious
Chekhov productions and a huge range of bands, orchestras and ensembles, the whole school is taking advantage of a range of exciting opportunities. Our superb Chapel Choir performs regularly and our versatile musicians swept the board recently in singing competitions and exam results. We have superb sports facilities and a unique new Sport and Wellbeing department with specialist strength and conditioning
coaches who take fitness to new levels across all sporting disciplines. Steffan Jones, ex Somerset Cricketer is also developing an elite cricket and sporting programme, so Wellington is the place to be for sport. We nurture and teach pupils from 3 -11 in the Prep School and 11-18 in the Senior School, and we are justly proud of the rounded, all-encompassing education they receive. We call it “Learning For Life”.
Come along to our next Open Morning on Monday 2nd May from 9am to 12noon to see what makes us so special. Contact us on 01823 668800 or admissions@wellingtonschool.org.uk to book a place.

Growing your own saves £s on your shopping bill Brits are saving an average £268 a year by digging for their dinner plate, according to new research released recently by the UK’s ultimate grow your own event – The Edible Garden Show. The study of 1,000 UK residents revealed homegrown food has never been more fashionable - and with good reason. Wolverhampton residents are saving more than twice the national average at £579 per year so it’s no surprise almost two-thirds of people nationwide have grown their own produce in the last five years and more than half are planning to in 2016. While saving money is key for 40%, health and taste benefits also top the poll of motivational factors. Popular botanist and television presenter James Wong, who will be headlining the show, which after two successful years in London is returning to the National Agricultural and Exhibition Centre in Stoneleigh, Warwickshire from 11-13 March, believes you can’t beat the taste of home-grown produce. James says: “Growing your own has never been so popular.
It can be so much more cuttingedge than people think. By using a range of simple scientific tips and tricks you can easily supercharge the flavour and nutrient content of your crops to make them far tastier than the supermarket alternatives.” As the nation prepares to sow and plant their own potatoes (42%), strawberries (46%), tomatoes (59%), herbs (51%), lettuce (36%), onions (29%), peas (24%), raspberries (23%) and chilies (20%), James believes most grow-yourown enthusiasts are merely scratching at the surface by sticking to growing traditional fruit and veg. He says: “This amounts to only 1% of what could be grown in the UK. Brits are missing out on countless weird and wonderful flavours and should be more adventurous. From Szechuan peppers and edible fuchsia berries, to tiny cucamelons and even home grown green tea, up to 3,000 edible crops can be grown extremely easily in the UK climate. Not only does it add variety to the ingredients you cook with and help you enjoy a healthier lifestyle, it also saves you. It is much cheaper to grow
saffron for instance than to buy it in the shops.” Although limited space is the largest constraint with 55% of people saying it’s put them off taking the plunge, nearly one in three are now considering growing their edible crops alongside their ornamental plants and flowers. James says: “As our gardens become smaller and smaller and we appreciate the amazing results that can be achieved in limited spaces, I think we’ll see more people moving away from purely ornamental gardens as they specifically select plants for their edible qualities. You don’t have to have acres of lands to grow your own. Tasty and incredible edible crops can be nurtured from the smallest of spaces on patios, balconies, window boxes and even front doorsteps.” Di Appleyard, Marketing and PR Co-ordinator for The National Allotment Society, says: “This research shows just how vital our allotment plots are and how, despite the majority of people in the UK only having access to small gardens and miniscule balconies, we have rediscovered our taste for and
COMPETITION
appreciation of home grown fruit and vegetables. Events like The Edible Garden Show provide a great opportunity to pick up some tips to get children interested in gardening and keen on eating fresh, healthy food. The inspirational talks and demonstrations give people the confidence.” It’s also incredibly social. With nearly half of Brits choosing to pick up a trowel with their partners and almost one in four inspiring the next generation by growing with either their children or grandchildren, it’s one of the best hobbies for leaving any troubles behind as you get out and have fun losing yourselves tending to your own fruit and veg. The Edible Garden Show Event Director Geraldine Reeve says: “Families growing together is at the very of heart of the show as it’s something the whole family can enjoy. It’s
really important to enthuse youngsters and give them an understanding of where their food comes from which is why there’s something for everyone. We have a huge crop of exciting exhibitors as well as a fertile mix of interactive advice sessions, hands-on demonstrations and
livestock. So whether you’re a novice, an expert or just seeking a slice of the good life, you can’t help but walk away inspired.” For more information about this great value for money family day out where under 5s are free visit: www. theediblegardenshow.co.uk

New Sixth Form Scholarship Announced The Governing Body at Bruton School for Girls is delighted to announce the introduction of a new Sixth Form Scholarship Award. Headmistress, Nicky Botterill, explained: “Thanks to a very generous benefactor and a much appreciated donation from the Visitors of Sexey’s Hospital, the Governors have decided to offer a 100% scholarship for a local day student to study A Levels for two years, starting in September 2016. “Our Sixth Form’s reputation for academic success continues to grow: last summer 85% of all students gained A*-C grades and an impressive 75% of the A Level cohort achieved either an A or A* grade. The percentage of girls with three or more passes at A Level was the best for three years and jumped from 89% in the previous year to 95% in 2015. In addition, this year we had five Oxbridge candidates, of whom three have received firm offers to read Mathematics at St Catherine’s College, Oxford, Natural Sciences at Trinity College, Cambridge and Natural Sciences at Pembroke College, Cambridge.” Mrs Botterill went on to say that this new Scholarship would extend the opportunity to experience all that Bruton has to offer to a local girl who might otherwise not be able to afford it. “I absolutely believe that the experience of studying at our Sixth Form, and the additional opportunities that brings, will
be a life-changing opportunity for one lucky student and will prepare them for University and life beyond.” Anyone wishing to find out more about how to apply should see: www.brutonschool. co.uk/scholarships

We have also taken over an allotment in South Petherton to support the children’s Health and Wellbeing. We encourage the children to learn about where our food comes from and make regular visits to the allotment to care for and grow produce. EDUCATION, INFORMATION
Sport at Queen’s College best of the best Queen’s College is well known locally for its sporting prowess and for the breadth of opportunities available to the students. The wonderful success Queen’s students enjoy has now officially been recognised in the ‘Best Independent Sports Schools of 2015’ league table published in school sports magazine. Hundreds of schools submitted their results in an effort to feature amongst what the magazine describes as ‘the best of the best’. Queen’s College is delighted to be ranked within the top 20 schools in the United Kingdom (16th place) as the only school representing Taunton to make it into the elite group. The results were based upon 20 different sports and more than 120 national competitions. Director of Sport, Simon Copeland, says ‘we are thrilled to gain such a resounding endorsement for the superb sport here at Queen’s. It is a
testament to the hard work of the students and the dedication of our talented staff and I know it will act as further motivation for our teams this coming season.’ The impressive development of sport at Queen’s College has seen the likes of Arul Suppiah (Director of Cricket) and Ian Haley (Director of Hockey) joining the coaching team and the trophy cabinet is certainly well used as a result. This term alone, Queen’s College report a candidate for the 2016 Olympic
training squad in Lillehammer, a Year 12 girl called up into the U18 England hockey team, an International Polo Team member selected to compete in Florida and the fastest U16 individual medley swimmer in the country. With their fabulous sports scholarship programme to nurture the very best talents, the coaching staff, facilities, dedication and sheer enjoyment of sport, it will be no surprise to see Queen’s College striving for the top spot in the 2016 table.
Alfred the Mouse Goes to School Alfred the Mouse Goes to School is an innovative new project that the Taunton Early Years Clusters are running across the more than 300 Somerset pre-schools they cover, supporting under-fives with the sometimes daunting transition to primary school. Each cluster pre-school can have their very own Alfred the Mouse soft toy, being distributed by Rachel Parish, Cluster Manager (schools and pre-schools should contact her at info@willowsetpreschool.org. uk to receive theirs). Children will be able to interact through a series of creative activities addressing specific areas within the Early Years Foundation Stage. These will support children’s imagination and development as they explore Alfred’s journey to school and through the journey reflect on their own upcoming transition. To accompany Alfred on his journey, Take Art has created a supporting Alfred the Mouse Goes to School website [www. alfredthemouse.co.uk], with a dedicated mini-site for nearly all of the primary schools in the Taunton clusters. Alfred can be seen taking part comfortably in the reception class and

BOOK REVIEW
Editor’s choice WHATEVER! By Gill Hines and Alison Baverstock Published by Piatkus When WHATEVER! was published in 2005 it was the first of its kind – a practical, hands on, no-nonsense guide for parents which recognised teenagers were more than tall 12 year olds and addressed the real issues experienced on both sides for both parents and their almostadult children. 10 years on, the landscape for everyone has completely changed and the authors are back with a fully revised edition of their parenting bestseller which now covers the rise of social media, sexting, cosmetic surgery and body image issues, celebrity culture and much more.

I am Bear By Ben Bailey Smith, illustrated by Sav Akyüz Published by Walker Books Meet the cheeky rebel hero of the forest in ‘I am Bear’ – the major new, rap-style, read aloud picture book by two first-time book creators, actor Ben Bailey Smith and storyboard artist Sav Akyüz. If there’s trouble, one thing is certain: Bear was there. In (and out) of his outrageous purple outfit, Bear can do anything – steal honey from bees, do magic tricks, steal doughnuts from a police officer, and annoy a certain pesky squirrel. A perfect picture book to keep young mischief makers in stitches. The Little Book of Woodland Bird Songs Published by Fine Feather Press "The Little Book Of Woodland Bird Songs" features twelve songs from some of Britain's best-loved feathered friends who inhabit the forests and woodlands throughout the UK. Originally designed for young children, these sound books turn out to be popular with the whole family and especially among parents and grandparents who have fun learning with their offspring. The solid board pages are chunky enough for the smallest of hands to manage, and include beautifully illustrated information about each featured bird. As well as describing their habitat, feeding habits and physical appearance, there is also a little known fact about each bird - did you know that pheasants occasionally launch territorial attacks on people, animals and even cars? What brings these books to life is the sound bar, which enables you to identify each different bird by its song.
Pass it On Written and illustrated by Sophy Henn Published by Puffin Should you spot a thing of wonder, jump for joy and pass it on… A playful and life-affirming picture book about positivity and finding happiness in everyday things. ‘Pass it On’ is a truly inspiring, whimsical read for children and parents in equal measure.
Free sticker book gets families to libraries Children can collect stickers every time they visit a library and put them in special sticker book to take home. Children’s reading charity, BookTrust has written and produced a sticker storybook to encourage more children to visit their local library in 2016. The new book called, Bear’s Reading Adventure, was developed in partnership with Igloo Books, after librarians reported that families need more encouragement to visit libraries. It is free from libraries for families with children aged 0-5 years. 18 Parent Talk February 2016
The story follows BookTrust’s blue bear mascot on his reading adventure, which takes him to the park, supermarket and of course the library. However, there are ten objects missing from bear’s adventure which children are tasked with finding. Children will earn a sticker of the missing object every time they go to the library, which BookTrust hopes will encourage families to visit the library regularly and read together every day. Author of Bear’s Reading Adventure and Director of Engagement and Marketing
at BookTrust, Gemma Malley said: ‘Libraries are a wonderful resource, whatever your age. If you haven't joined your local library or visited for a while, then do take a moment to see what's going on. ‘Reading with your child is fun, and a great way to spend time together. If a parent reads to their children every day they will be almost 12 months ahead of their age group when they start school. Even reading to them three to five times a week gives them a six-month headstart over those who are read to less often.’
When children have collected all ten stickers they can download a certificate from www.bookstart.org.uk/ bearsadventure which also contains more tips for families on how they can have fun reading together every day. Early Years Facilitator & Bookstart Coordinator in Cornwall, Deborah Averill said: ‘The quality of the book Bear’s Reading Adventure is fantastic and children will love visiting the library to collect their stickers. A great incentive and fun too!’ BookTrust created Bear’s Reading Adventure to help
libraries achieve the aims of the Association of Senior Children's and Education Librarians’ (ASCEL) Children’s Promise, to provide more opportunities for families to participate and engage with their local library services; and to make library visits inspiring and exciting. The sticker storybook is being piloted in selected libraries across England. The book was illustrated by popular children’s illustrator, Jo Byatt, who said: ‘I was honoured to illustrate for such a wonderful project. My two girls have enjoyed BookTrust books in the past, so
to be given the opportunity to recreate such wonderful characters to encourage children to use the library was a dream.’

Safer Internet Day
What is Safer Internet Day? Safer internet day, now in its sixth year, is coordinated by the UK Safer Internet Centre. The day sees hundreds of organisations involved in promoting safe, responsible and positive use of digital technology for children and young people. Tips for parents on internet safety from The Department for Education and UK Safer Internet Centre ● Have an open and honest dialogue with children about staying safe online ● Encourage them to tell you which sites they might be using and talk about anything they see online ● Set boundaries and make an agreement on what they can and cannot do online. If the agreement is broken, restrict internet access for an agreed period of time ● Read up on information available through schools and official sites, such as ParentInfo, to make sure you are aware of issues and armed with information ● Arm your children with advice: ◆ Be careful what you say online. Respect others and do not retaliate or reply to offending e-mails, text messages or online conversations – leave the conversation ◆ Be careful what pictures or videos you upload. Once a picture is shared online it
cannot be taken back ◆ Only add people you know and trust to friends/followers lists online What is Government doing about internet safety? In 2014 the Government made internet safety a compulsory part of the curriculum. Schools are also able to teach e-safety during PSHE lessons and every school is required by law to have measures in place to prevent all forms of bullying including cyber-bullying. In December last year the Government also announced strengthened measures to protect children from harm online - including cyberbullying, pornography and the risk of radicalisation. Under the proposals all schools will: ● Need to have appropriate filters and monitoring systems, so that no child can access harmful content via the school’s IT systems and concerns can be spotted quickly; ● Be required to ensure that they teach their pupils about safeguarding, including online. The Government also announced a further package of measures including: ● Two practical guides on social media – including one to help parents keep their children safe online produced by the UK’s Council for Child Internet
Safety (UKCCIS) – to help children understand the risks and benefits of social media, and prevent risks becoming problems. ● New online training, launched in the new year, will offer support for professionals, including nurses, doctors and teachers who work with children and young people. ● An updated Thinkuknow site offers a completely refreshed suite of articles and guidance on all aspects of child internet safety, as well as providing specific advice for parents and carers on preventing their children from becoming victims of sexual abuse and exploitation both online and in the ‘real world'; and ● New industry-led awareness raising initiatives including Google’s ‘Internet Legends’ tour which will travel around the country delivering assemblies to school children in 40 locations during this school year, to help kids stay safe online, so they can get the most out of all that the internet can offer. In addition ParentInfo, a new Government funded online service, offers free expert advice to schools on how children and young people can stay safe online. This information, packed as a Tool Kit, can be hosted on individual schools websites making it easily accessible to parents and carers who can

01823 288644 then discuss these important issues at home. It’s already available in 2,500 schools giving parents practical advice and tips on issues such as sexting, and online bullying. We have given schools powers to help them contain cyberbullying during the school day by banning or limiting the use of mobiles and other electronic devices. Teachers also have the power to search for, and if necessary delete, inappropriate images (or files) on electronic devices, including mobile phones. Education Secretary Nicky Morgan said: “As a parent I understand the real importance of internet safety in protecting our children. The internet is a powerful tool which can have brilliant and virtually limitless benefits, but with this does come some risk.” “We are working hard to address these online risks but we can’t do it alone, parents are vitally important in making sure that children stay safe online. We want to make sure young people are educated, and parents as well as teachers, are knowledgeable and actively involved in promoting internet safety so that children are able to safely enjoy all that new technologies have to offer.”
