Dear Readers...

Welcome back and I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas. I was going to say relaxing but, of course, we all know that Christmas is far from that. One of my New Year’s Resolutions is that I won’t be wrapping presents at midnight on Christmas Eve but secretly I must somehow cherish this tradition as it inevitably occurs from one year to the next. So, what will 2015 bring? Did you know that it’s the centenary year of that iconic publisher Ladybird. Who remembers Peter and Jane where Peter helped his father mend the car whilst Jane spent time with her mother doing the washing up –how times have changed, or at least in books! Neither of our girls seem particularly interested in car mechanics other than eldest daughter quick to spot that car is running low on fuel and could bank of mum make a contribution! We’ve got a great selection of titles in our ‘Editor’s Choice’ and top of my list will be ‘King John and Magna Carta’. Did you know that January 2015 is the 50th anniversary of the death of Winston Churchill? Take a look at our Book Bag pages to find out more about him. With best wishes for a great start to 2015,

Boosting children’s self-esteem and confidence with performing arts It is a sad fact that performing arts is declining in England’s schools. But although the National Curriculum is struggling to find a place for it, performing arts is widely spoken about as being one of the most positive influences on a child’s life. It is not only for those that want to go on and make a career on the stage, performing arts stimulates all children’s creativity.

This is where affordable, part-time theatre schools really come into their own. Razzamataz Yeovil is part of a national chain of theatre schools that achieved national recognition after a successful appearance on BBC’s Dragons’ Den when Duncan Bannatyne became an investor.

Razzamataz encourages all children and young people to try their hand at performing arts because as well as it being thoroughly enjoyable, it has also been shown to have a significant impact on the process of improving literacy levels in children. Educational achievement aside, what performing arts ultimately give children, are the skills with which to better express themselves, leading to increased confidence and self esteem. All these positive messages are now available to the preschool age group with Razz Tots at Yeovil. These parent assisted melody and movement classes are aligned to the Early Years Curriculum and are open for all children aged 2 and 3 years old.

Razzamataz Theatre Schools offer exceptional part-time training in dance, drama and singing together with exciting opportunities to perform. Classes are for

children from age 2 to 18 and allow students to experience a range of performance styles from classic West End musical theatre to funky street dance.

Build a successful business from home Somerset mum of two, Nicola Laing, has beaten the recession finding a way to have it all by working flexible hours and receiving a great income. She created this by grabbing the opportunity to be one of many mums across the UK building a successful business from home.

It was when looking for flexible work that she was introduced to an interesting company offering the chance to take control of her future. “Initially I was looking for a little extra income, however, now this brilliant company provides me with an amazing income working part time so I can spend tons of time with my boys and not have to check the bank

balance before making family decisions.” “I always knew money was not the answer to everything; however, this company has enabled me to create those special memories for my family that will last a lifetime.” “Having never had a business before, I had a lot to learn. But the company had excellent training so I was able to learn the ropes and found the personal development very rewarding too. The sense of independence and security it has given me is really quite life changing.” Forever Living is now expanding into Somerset and looking for honest and ethical people who would like to earn between £50 - £2000 per month working part time.

Give Your Child a FUNdamental head start…… Pre-School Gymnastics and beyond Why choose Gymnastics for your child? Gymnastics is a ‘foundation sport’ recognised as teaching children the fundamental basics necessary to succeed in all levels of all sports. That is to say, children get stronger, faster, more flexible, better balance, general coordination and more powerful. Coaches from all sports appreciate the benefits gained by children that have been involved in gymnastics from an early age. But more than this, children who participate within gymnastics develop self-discipline, direction and a realistic sense of self-esteem. They learn to take direction, manage time, problem solve and that hard work is productive. So where can you take your child to benefit from all the above? Orchard Gymnastics are a multi award winning club offering classes for children from walking upwards. Operating from one of the South West’s most comprehensive gymnastics facilities children work on all the familiar equipment including beams, bars, trampoline,

Bath Tourism Plus launches New Year Detox Campaign Beat the January Blues with a Detox Stay in Bath

Bath has long been a centre of well-being, in fact the word ‘spa’ is associated with the Latin phrase ‘Salus Per Aquam’ or ‘health through water’, making Bath the ideal place to detox after the festive season.

This January, Bath Tourism Plus is launching a new series of detox packages including four hours for the price of two at the world-famous Thermae Bath Spa. Escape for a night in one of Bath’s top hotels, then relax and unwind in the Aroma steam rooms or the open-air rooftop swimming pool at the Thermae Bath Spa. David James, Chief Executive of Bath Tourism Plus, explains: “Whether you’re a regular spa goer that loves being pampered or haven’t had the pleasure of relaxing in spa surroundings before, you won’t be disappointed with the spa experiences Bath has to offer.” David continues: “Home to Britain’s only natural thermal waters, Bath has been

Mr Bloom gets set to grow at The Edible Garden Show CBeebies’ popular, greenfingered Mr Bloom from Mr Bloom’s Nursery will be bringing all the fun of his fertile allotment to The Edible Garden Show – the UK’s only national event dedicated to grow your own.

The happy-go-lucky singing gardener who is played by Ben Faulks, will be popping into the award-winning show’s Experts Theatre on Saturday, March 21 to inspire the ‘tiddlers’ with his high-energy show. The live action will feature a host of games and catchy songs to get the children inspired by gardening and nature. Ben is looking forward to his appearance as it’s a great opportunity for Mr Bloom to directly engage with the audience at home. The CBeebies’ show sees small groups of children visiting his allotment, feeding his wondrous homemade ‘Compostarium’ compost bin and interacting with the Veggies. He said: “I’m really looking forward to being part of the event. It sounds like a great line up for the whole family. I believe it’s really important to provide accessible events for the younger audience to engage with nature, so that they can learn about all the benefits of horticulture from the ground up, so to speak. They’re naturally drawn to the garden, and let’s face it, it’s an amazing place where all manner of treasures and treats grow. So let’s get them inspired and actively support their development in this area.”

Mr Bloom’s appearance is just one of a number of new features to go live when The Edible Garden Show returns to Alexandra Palace from 20-22 March. The show, which boasts a brand new sister event, Good Life Live, has something for all the family and is packed with not-to-be-missed exhibits featuring a broad range of grow your own products as well as outdoor living activities and experiences. In addition to famous chefs Rachel Green and Mark Lloyd, visitors will enjoy an incredible line-up of gardening experts including James Wong, Pippa Greenwood and Paul Peacock, who will be providing new ideas to novice gardeners and seasoned growers alike. There will be lots of interactive sessions for children where they can get their hands dirty, learn how to create wooden badges, bake bread and make their own butter in the Make it! area. They can even hold baby chicks in the Chicken Coop, have a field day on the Village Green, meet the animals in the pop up City Farm or get creative in the Family Zone. Show Director Geraldine Reeve is delighted that Mr Bloom will be part of the 2015 show. She said: “Since Mr Blooms Nursery started in 2011, Ben Faulks and his character Mr Bloom have been credited with turning a

generation of kids into young gardeners, so it’s fantastic that he will be joining our incredible line-up who will be inspiring and enthusing our visitors to start digging for their dinner plate. “In addition to providing expert advice and new ideas to both novices and seasoned growers it is imperative that we start at the grass roots providing interactive content for our younger visitors so they can find out about growing your own fruit and vegetables in a fun way.” She added: “The 2015 show will be the best yet, with something for everyone. We have hugely increased the interactivity of the show so visitors can enjoy over eleven attraction areas compared to three in 2014.”

To book your tickets, which give access to both The Edible Garden Show and Good Life Live, please call the ticket hotline on 0871 230 3451 or visit www.theediblegardenshow.co.uk

Families urged to “Do1Thing” Monkton Elm launches

famous sapling giveaway for New Year

Children could help their families save hundreds of pounds on their energy bills by logging on to a new website.

Do1Thing. org.uk has been launched by Circle Housing which provides homes to nearly 200,000 people across the country. Research by Circle Housing found that 2.5 million British households planned to take out a loan last winter to pay for their energy bills. The affordable housing provider now hopes to show families how they can save more than £200 a year by inspiring children aged 10 and under to make simple energy saving changes. Energy saving is turned into a game on Do1Thing.org. uk. The website encourages families to work together to make one small change a day and track the amount of money they save. The Fairhalls from Chelmsford are among Circle Housing residents to be taking part in the initiative. Cameron, 7, and Skye, 4, will star alongside mum Hannah, dad Harry and baby sister Lottie in a series of videos and blogs on

the website as they discover and share new ways of saving energy and money. Hannah Fairhall said: “I’m very conscious when it comes to energy saving. It’s more about the money saving than anything else as that can be a huge worry. We’ve noticed that the price of energy is starting to rise and so we have to do what we can to keep costs down. “The idea of being a parent is you can pass your knowledge on to your children. I want my children to learn what they can do to save energy and money as that’s going to help them as well as our planet as they grow older.” An average saving of £197 was made last year by Circle Housing residents who took advantage of support such as advice, energy supplier switching and efficiency upgrades.

Helen Wilson, Head of Energy and Green Strategy at Circle Housing said: “Many families struggle to afford to keep their homes warm during the winter. Our intention is to inspire a new generation of energy saving superheroes by helping children understand the basics of energy saving and showing exactly how they can make a difference. “We hope this will empower more of our customers to make small changes that could have a big impact on their energy bills.” As well as the new website, nearly 10,000 Circle Housing families have been supplied with an activity pack which includes more games and information designed to help households reduce their energy bills over the winter. New research reveals lack of awareness of charitable grants amongst families in financial hardship New research from Turn2us, part of the national charity Elizabeth Finn Care, has revealed a stark lack of awareness of the support available through charitable grants amongst families in financial hardship, and the measures they are taking before seeking help.

Over two-thirds of Turn2us website users with children said they were completely unaware of charitable grants before finding out about this help through Turn2us. Worryingly, almost a third had

been struggling financially for over a year before checking what support could be available to them. As a result of their situation, two-thirds had no choice but to rely on the financial support of family and friends, and over three-fifths have been forced to cut back on food and heating. In addition, over a quarter have resorted to using credit cards to pay their bills and essentials, and over a fifth have taken out a short-term or payday loan. Turn2us has released

these new research findings to coincide with the launch of its grants awareness campaign ‘Go for a Grant’. The campaign is encouraging anyone in financial hardship to use the free online Turn2us Grants Search tool to check their eligibility for grants and other support depending on their particular needs and circumstances. There are over 3,000 grantgiving charities available in the UK, distributing £288 million in grants and services

to individuals in need every year. Each charitable fund is set up to assist people on low incomes according to their current or previous occupation, the area they live or for a specific health condition or disability. Individuals who have used our Grants Search tool have seen an average annual income increase of over £2,400 in regular charitable grants and over £550 in oneoff grants. Alison Taylor, Director of Turn2us said: “Our research shows that more needs to be done to help raise awareness of the vital support provided

by grant-giving charities. We know that people in financial difficulty can be reluctant to turn to charities for help and as a result are forced to go without everyday essentials or are taking on increasingly large amounts of debt. Yet feedback from individuals using our services shows that once they have sought help, receiving a grant has an overwhelmingly positive financial and emotional impact on their lives. “With new reports showing that there are an

extra 300,000 households living in poverty in the UK than previously thought, the need for support has never been greater. Through our campaign we hope to reach out to more people in need and encourage them to check their eligibility for help today.” The ‘Go for a Grant’ campaign is being supported by a number of charities across the UK to increase awareness of the help available to those in need. As part of the campaign, Turn2us is also releasing a new research report providing insights in to how the grant-giving charity sector operates and plans for future developments.

Sir Winston Churchill Conservative Prime Minister 1940 to 1945, 1951 to 1955 Winston Churchill was an inspirational statesman, writer, orator and leader who led Britain to victory in the Second World War. He served as Conservative Prime Minister twice - from 1940 to 1945 (before being defeated in the 1945 general election by the Labour leader Clement Attlee) and from 1951 to 1955. Winston Churchill was born on 30 November 1874, in Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire and was of rich, aristocratic ancestry. Although achieving poor grades at school, his early fascination with militarism saw him join the Royal Cavalry in 1895. As a soldier and part-time journalist, Churchill travelled widely, including trips to Cuba, Afghanistan, Egypt and South Africa. Churchill was elected as Conservative MP for Oldham in 1900, before defecting to the Liberal Party in 1904 and spending the next decade climbing the ranks of the Liberal government. He was First Lord of the Admiralty (the civil/political head of the Royal Navy) by the time of the disastrous Gallipoli campaign, which he created. Heavily criticised for this error, he resigned from this position and travelled to the Western Front to fight himself. The interwar years saw Churchill again ‘cross the floor’ from the Liberals, back to the Conservative Party. He served as Chancellor of the Exchequer from 1924, when he controversially opted for Britain to re-join the Gold Standard. Following the Tory electoral defeat in 1929, Churchill lost his seat and spent much of the next 11 years out of office, mainly writing and making speeches. Although he was alone in his firm opposition to Indian Independence, his warnings against the Appeasement of Nazi Germany were proven correct when the Second World War broke out in 1939.

Following Neville Chamberlain’s resignation in 1940, Churchill was chosen to succeed him as Prime Minister of an all-party coalition government. Churchill, who also adopted the self-created position of Minister for Defence, was active both in administrative and diplomatic functions. Some of his most memorable speeches were given in this period, and are credited with stimulating British morale during periods of great hardship. However, Labour leader Clement Attlee’s unexpected General Election victory in 1945 saw Churchill out of office and once again concentrating on public speaking. In his 1946 speech in the USA, the instinctive pro-American famously declared that “an iron curtain has descended across the Continent”, and warned of the continued danger from a powerful Soviet Russia. By his re-election in 1951, Churchill was, in the words of Roy Jenkins, “gloriously unfit for office”. Ageing and increasingly unwell, he often conducted business from his bedside, and while his powerful personality and oratory ability endured, the Prime Minister’s leadership was less decisive than during the war. His second term was most notable for the Conservative Party’s acceptance of Labour’s newly created Welfare State, and Churchill’s effect on domestic policy was limited. His later attempts at decreasing the developing Cold War through personal diplomacy failed to produce significant results, and poor health forced him to resign in 1955, making way for his Foreign Secretary and Deputy Prime Minister, Anthony Eden. Churchill died in 1965, and was honoured with a state funeral.

Died 24 January 1965

Born 30 November 1874, Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire. Died 24 January 1965, London. Dates in office 1940 to 1945, 1951 to 1955. Political party Conservative. Major acts Education Act 1944: raised the school leavers age to 14; introduction of the 11+. Interesting facts Churchill was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953 for his many published works.

Endangered species

The Polar Bear Nearly a quarter of all mammal species and a third of amphibians are threatened with extinction so there is an urgent need to protect wildlife and the places in which they live.

The definition of Polar Bear is â—? noun a large white arctic bear which lives mainly on the pack ice. (Compact Oxford English Dictionary). It is a powerful swimmer and feeds chiefly on seals

They are the world’s biggest bear! Males can grow up to 11 feet long and weigh over 1500 (700 kg) pounds and females about half this size

The polar bear can be found in five arctic nations; U.S.(Alaska), Canada, Russia, Denmark(Greenland), and Norway

The bears are protected from the extreme cold by their thick coats and their blubber, which can be up to 10cm or 3.9 inches thick

The scientific name Ursus maritimus is Latin, which translated means sea bear. The polar bear is sometimes thought of as a marine mammal because the amount of time it spends in the sea

Only humans are the predators, or hunters, of polar bears

The main diet of a polar bear is seals

Book Bag NEWS Each year the World Conservation Union (IUCN) draw up a list, known as the Red List, which shows how many of a certain species is left and how threatened they are. This includes plants and animals. The different categories are: Critically Endangered, Endangered, Vulnerable, Extinct or Extinct in the Wild.

Polar bears are amazing at long distance swimming, they are capable of swimming 155 kilometres (nearly 100 miles), and a female polar bear has been documented as swimming a distance of 354 kilometres (220 miles)

When a polar bear is born it weighs a little more than a pound, is born blind and is usually one of two cubs in a litter

The Polar bear is classified as a Vulnerable, endangered species, with over 50% of polar bear populations in decline. Climate change, resulting in the changing of its habitat is the most significant threat to the polar bear

Mother polar bear will nurture her cubs to around 2-2.5 years old; however 70% of cubs will not survive to see their third birthday

Polar bears don’t drink water! They get all the liquids that they need to survive from the animals that they eat

It is unusual for a polar bear to live longer than 25 years old, although they can live longer in captivity. The oldest captive polar bear on record lived to be 43 years old

Polar bears have really large feet that act in a similar way to snowshoes

Polar bear fur is not white! The fur has thick, hollow hairs that reflect light which makes the coat look white. Another surprising fact is that their skin is black

The place to be – Wellington School Last term, Wellington School Maths Challenge once again attracted huge numbers of children. Over 180 students from 45 primary schools took part in the Challenge and enjoyed the competitive spirit. The winner in this hotly contested competition was Feniton School, whose team of 4 beat off all other contenders for the prize.

Now in its nineteenth year, this annual event is aimed at children aged 10 or 11 from schools across Devon and Somerset. Schools are invited to enter a team of four pupils who work together to solve 25 questions in one hour. Their problem solving skills are put to the test with a range of tasks which are based on principles from across mathematics. “It was an exciting morning, with lots of talented mathematicians pitting their wits against each other”, commented Peter Buckingham, Head of Maths at Wellington School. “These

young mathematicians have impressed us all with their enthusiasm. They have successfully solved problems by working together and sharing their methods”. At Wellington, pupils study the more rigorous IGCSE in Maths and Science as well as Latin and Greek and the emphasis is strongly academic. But Wellington has so much more to offer than exam

results. With the appointment of our Director in Residence, the performing arts go from strength to strength. We also have superb sports facilities and a specialist strength and conditioning coach who is taking fitness to new levels across all sporting disciplines. Steffan Jones, ex Somerset Cricketer is developing an elite cricket programme, so Wellington is the place to be for sport. We nurture and teach pupils from 3-11 in the Prep School and 11-18 in the Senior School, and we are justly proud of the rounded, allencompassing education they receive. We call it “Learning For Life”. Do come along and see us, we would be delighted to show you how exciting our school is. Stewart Garden Schools campaign continues to grow as year three gets underway Stewart Garden, the gardening division of UK manufacturer Stewart Group Holdings, has launched its Stewart Garden Schools campaign for 2015. Now in its third consecutive year, the campaign promotes children across the UK to begin growing their own fruit and vegetables.

After Bradley Barton Primary School took first prize in 2014 with its Wizard of Oz inspired garden, the challenge is on to create something special in 2015 as part of the celebration surrounding Stewart Group Holdings 70th Anniversary as a UK manufacturer of gardening products. Based on the popular musical, Barton Primary School’s winning creation featured scarecrows, floral rainbows and woodland made of peas. The pupils also created a wormery to break down old leaves for garden compost. The Stewart Garden Schools campaign challenges schools to be creative with Stewart Garden products. Every entrant in this year’s campaign studied growing seeds and explored the differences between electric

and non-electric propagators. Almost 200 schools across the UK, from the Isle of Wight to Stirling, have participated in the Stewart Garden Schools Campaign since 2014. Participating schools receive garden products worth over £400 and three varieties of easy-grow vegetable seeds from Pippa Greenwood’s range. Additionally, compost was donated by participating garden centres and professional growers’ specialist, J Arthur Bowers. Building on previous year’s success the top ten entrants in the Stewart Garden Schools campaign 2015 will receive a generous level of prize money. The winning school will receive £1,000 to spend at its local garden centre. The nine runners up will each receive £100. In partnership J Arthur Bowers will donate £500 worth of vouchers to the winner and the nine runners up prize money. The global electronics giant, Brother, is again supplying its sophisticated GL200 garden label printer. Looking forward to the

upcoming campaign, Nigel Thompson, sales director at Stewart Garden said: “The Stewart Garden Schools campaign has really captured the imagination of school children in the last two years. We’re looking forward to seeing what ideas our entrants will come up with in 2015.” This year’s Stewart Garden Schools campaign kit will include Stewart Garden propagators, seed trays, plant pots, troughs and watering cans. The company has also produced promotional materials and an informative booklet. The Stewart Garden Schools campaign 2015 is open to school pupils aged 6-11 years. To inspire young people and give your local school the chance to win £1,000, nominate yourself or a school near you by 30th January 2015. CHARITY Meningitis Now is warning people to stay vigilant to the signs and symptoms of meningitis as cases of the deadly bacterial form of the disease peak during the winter months.

With the prospect of colder winter weather the risk of meningitis increases. People spend more time indoors, closer to others; meaning germs are spread more easily. And fighting common infections like colds and flu weakens people’s immune systems, leaving them more vulnerable to the disease. Each year there are 3,200 cases of bacterial meningitis in the UK – leaving 10 per cent of sufferers dead and a third of those who survive with after-effects such as brain damage, loss of hearing and sight and, where septicaemia has occurred, loss of limbs and scarring. It’s a disease which can kill in hours, so knowledge of the symptoms, vigilance and quick action are all vital. Sue Davie, Meningitis Now chief executive, said: “Babies and children under 5 are most at risk of meningitis, with over half of all cases occurring in this age group. “But the disease can affect anyone, of any age, at any time. Even those who consider themselves ‘fit and healthy’ may be left fighting for their life in a matter of hours.” Meningitis is a difficult disease to spot as many of its early symptoms can be similar to flu. These symptoms can include fever with cold hands and feet, vomiting, headache, stiff neck, dislike of bright light, joint or muscle pain, pale blotchy skin, drowsiness, confusion and, in babies, a dislike of being handled, an unusual cry, rapid breathing and bulging fontanelle. Both adults and children may have a rash that does not fade under pressure, but advice from Meningitis Now is not to wait for a rash to develop before seeking medical attention. Symptoms can appear in any order and some may not appear at all. Sue Davie added: “We urge everyone to familiarise themselves with the symptoms, trust their instincts and get urgent medical help if concerned. Doing this could save yours or a loved one’s life.” Without vaccines for all strains of meningitis, knowing the symptoms is the best form of defence. Download Meningitis Now’s free symptoms apps or request a credit-card sized symptoms card from its website at www.meningitisnow.org Anyone affected by the disease or who has concerns can contact the charity’s free helpline on 0808 80 10 388 for information on its free support services.

The Facts

meningitis or septicaemia, one in ten people will die and at least a third of survivors will be left with lifelong aftereffects such as hearing loss, epilepsy, limb loss or learning difficulties ✹ Meningitis and septicaemia can affect anyone, of any age, at any time. However, babies and young children are most at risk, and young people between 15 – 24 years are also a higher risk group. ✹ In the past 20 years, effective vaccines have been developed to give protection against SOME types of meningitis. These are offered to all babies and young children as part of the UK childhood immunisation programme. BUT there are not vaccines to protect against ALL types. ✹ In January 2013, a vaccine to protect against meningococcal group B (Men B) disease, the most common cause of bacterial meningitis and septicaemia, was licensed for use in Europe. In March 2014, this vaccine was recommended for routine use in the UK childhood immunisation programme, provided a costeffective vaccine price can be agreed. ✹ If you suspect someone may be ill with meningitis or septicaemia, trust your instincts and get immediate medical help.

✹ Meningitis is usually caused by bacteria or viruses ✹ Meningitis is inflammation of the membranes that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord ✹ Septicaemia is blood poisoning ✹ Some bacteria that cause meningitis also cause septicaemia ✹ Meningitis and septicaemia often happen together – it is vital to know all the signs and symptoms ✹ The early signs and symptoms of meningitis and septicaemia can be similar to ‘flu and include fever, headache, nausea, vomiting and muscle pain. ✹ The more specific signs and symptoms include fever with cold hands and feet, drowsiness, confusion, pale blotchy skin, stiff neck, dislike of bright lights and a rash which doesn’t fade under pressure. ✹ In babies, symptoms can also include being floppy and unresponsive, dislike of being handled, rapid breathing, an unusual, moaning cry and a bulging fontanelle (soft spot on the top of the head). ✹ There are an estimated 3,200 cases of bacterial meningitis and septicaemia each year in the UK. ✹ Following bacterial

Please help our vital work by joining WWF from as little as £3 a month.

We share an incredible world. And we have a responsibility to protect it for our children, their children, and the generations that follow. It’s a world full of challenges. Did you know:

There are only about 35 Amur leopards remaining in the wild, around the same number as a classroom of children? Three quarters of all major global fish stocks are fished at or beyond sustainable limits? 50% of UK homes cause 26%

of the UK’s CO2 emissions? But WWF is there to provide solutions, and over the last 50 years has had some major successes: ✹ We helped bring the Amur tiger back from the brink of extinction, from just 30 to around 400. ✹ Introducing new circle hooks in Indonesia instead of traditional J hooks has resulted in 80% fewer turtles being accidentally caught. ✹ We’ve helped change legislation so all new build homes in the UK will meet zero carbon standards by 2016.

Help us continue our vital work to protect some of the world’s most vulnerable animals, places and people, tackle climate change and address the unsustainable consumption of precious natural resources. Please become a member of WWF today from as little as £3 a month and together we can make a real difference. Members get 3 issues of WWF’s Action magazine a year full of conservation news and field reports debates and campaign updates competitions and reader offers.

Chilton Cantelo Children develop a brings out the best love of learning at Sidcot School in your child Sasha Long sums up her children’s thoughts about school with a big smile: “they like the fact they are able to be themselves – they really are happy little people!” Sasha’s daughter Anouska, 13 has been a pupil at Sidcot School for two years, while Rufus, 11, joined the Quaker school in September. Sasha said: “I remember collecting Anouska after her first day, she said it had been the best day of her life!”

Set in twenty acres of beautiful parkland, Chilton Cantelo School is located only minutes away from Sherborne and Yeovil. A coed, day and boarding school for children aged 3-18, the school brings out the best in its pupils by tailoring learning goals and objectives for each and everyone one of them.

Chilton Cantelo provides full, weekly and occasional boarding. Bus transport is available for pupils located around Somerset and Dorset with flexible daily routes as well as for weekly boarders. Daily after-school activities are provided as well as exciting weekend programmes for boarders. All pupils attend at

least three activities a week which range from chamber choir to vehicle repairs. Chilton Cantelo is part of Cognita Group, a world leader in independent education and the UK’s largest network of independent schools. Call 01935 850555 to attend an Open Day or to arrange a visit at any time.

For every parent the happiness of their child is a top priority but, with increasing importance placed on academic success, it can often be hard to find a balance. Hidden away in 150 acres of beautiful Somerset countryside, Sidcot School is peacefully encouraging children from Early Years to Sixth Form to develop a love of learning which sees them secure the very top grades. In 2014 81% of A Level grades were between A* and C and there was 100% success at GCSE with nearly 90% achieving a minimum of 5 GCSEs A*-C.

Sasha added: “At Sidcot the children are inspired to think creatively, to be well rounded and interested in all areas of life, prepared to take risks and encouraged to think

‘outside the box’. Academic success is achieved through the enjoyment of learning rather than pressure to work all hours in a competitive environment.”

Sidcot’s next Open Morning is Friday 23 January 9am til 12 noon.

A full range of talent and academic scholarships and bursaries are available for entry from years 1 to 12 (applications to be received by 30 January 2015). Visit www.sidcot.org.uk for full information.

Individualised Learning. Bringing out the best in your child.

At Sidcot School we develop students’ natural curiosity and creativity. We educate them, rather than simply train them to pass tests, so that they can go out into the world and live rewarding and adventurous lives. Curious to know more? Come to our Open Morning and find out what makes Sidcot different. Friday 23 January 9am – noon RSVP to Sidcot at sidcot.org.uk/contact or 01934 845236.

Hockey champions at Queen’s The Girls 1st XI Hockey Team at Queen’s College have enjoyed a hugely successful season, being crowned West of England Champions, beating Millfield in the final and winning the prestigious Sherborne Tournament. In

this impressive season which included, two 7 – 0 victories over Wycliffe and King’s College and three 6 – 0 victories over Bristol Grammar School, Truro College and Downside School, the girls scored a staggering 89 goals and conceded only 16 in their 30 games this season. On top of this they beat their local rivals Taunton School 3-0, Millfield 3-2 and King’s College. Livvy Hoskins and Katy Cross are the top goal scorers for Queen’s, both having scored 17 goals this term; they will however have a chance to improve on this outside of the regular season. As Champions of the West, the girls have

qualified to play in the national finals on the 24th and 25th of February. They will travel up to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London to compete against seven other teams from around the country in a bid to become National Champions. Laura Fry has been selected for the U18 England squad and Olivia Hoskins and Rebecca

Handford have attended the High Performance Assessment Camp. In addition, five players have played for the Wessex Leopards. Head of Hockey at Queen’s College, Ian Haly praised the achievements of both students. “Hockey at Queen’s College is on a real high at the moment and we are achieving great success at all levels”.

Scholarships – an opportunity waiting One of the most frustrating things about being a parent is the thought that you should have pushed for more from your child’s school. It is not acceptable for children to be allowed to coast along; they should be stretched and challenged or supported where needed.

But what options are there? Scholarships often present an opportunity to develop specific areas of talent – but parents need to do their homework too! Scholarship testing is routine and it generally happens on a specific date so make sure you don’t miss the scholarship application deadlines (which in

many cases is January). Parents are often more anxious about these tests than the pupils! Don’t be nervous – these tests are simply

designed to indicate strengths and highlight potential to provide the school with an insight on which they can make an offer. Scholarships may offer a reduction in fees of between 5 and 20% with occasional higher offers in very exceptional circumstances. When combining scholarships with Bursary options, this reduction can make the difference which makes independent schooling affordable to more families. As Headmistress of an all girls’ school, I have witnessed the unbelievable blossoming of young girls who have taken the scholarship opportunities a school can offer, and lapped up every minute. They grow in confidence academically and socially to become responsible, confident young women and ready for life beyond the Sixth Form. By Rob Ryan Published by Hutchinson The follow up to The Invisible Kingdom, The Kingdom Revealed is a stunningly illustrated fairy-tale for all ages. A young king has run away from his palace home. He’s left behind luxury and privilege. He’s left behind his mum and his only friend. And he’s also left behind his stifling preordained life where no one ever asked him what he wants. As he dreamily wanders the streets, he marvels at the beautiful birds and the wonderful variety of people all around him. But when night falls, he must face reality: he’s all alone in a big city and doesn’t know where his next meal will come from. And meanwhile, back at the palace, Count Von Dronus has been left in a very difficult position – and is determined the king will suffer for what he has done.

Book

By John Agard Illustrated by Neil Packer Published by Walker Books Quirky and humorous, part poetry, part reflection, this is the story of the book told by none other than Book himself! This extraordinary character begins by reminding us of his origins in oral story and clay tablets, then ponders on papyrus, parchment and paper, and on being a scroll who finally gets a spine. We see him lovingly illuminated by monks in medieval monasteries, then witness the massive changes brought about by the invention of the printing press, and the coming of paperbacks and e-books in the 20th century. But Book’s not a straightforwardly chronological chap; he can’t help musing – and his musings, whether they’re on the evolution of the alphabet, libraries, book-burning or blurbs, are delightful and thought-provoking.

Childhood Eye Cancer Trust campaign shows you can spot eye cancer in a child with a smartphone Childhood Eye Cancer Trust (CHECT) has launched a campaign to show parents that they can detect the early signs of eye cancer in children and potentially save their lives by simply taking their photo.

Flash photography is one of the easiest ways to spot the early stages of retinoblastoma, an aggressive, deadly eye cancer affecting predominantly young children. A tumour in the eye can reflect back a white pupil in a photograph, so when a child with eye cancer has their photo taken with a smartphone or camera using a flash, a white pupil can appear in the child’s eye in the image. The series of 4 posters, made using innovative reflective ink, show a close up shot of the eye of a real retinoblastoma survivor aged between 2 and 5 years old.

People are invited to take a picture of the poster on their smartphones. The pupil of the child’s eye will appear bright white in the photo, in contrast to the seemingly healthylooking eye in the poster. The posters will appear in GP offices, baby clinics and childcare centres to spread awareness of eye cancer to the people who need to hear it most - parents and carers. A video demonstrating how the reflective ink works and raising awareness about retinoblastoma will run on the CHECT YouTube channel. The campaign encourages people to share photos of their own children and the demo video YouTube link on Twitter and their social channels to help spread awareness, using the hashtag #haveyouCHECT. CHECT is also asking media organisations to

use the #haveyouCHECT hashtag when reporting on the campaign to spread the message further. The cancer, which develops in the retinal cells, is fast growing and detection can save the child’s life and possibly prevent removal of the eye. The campaign, aims to demonstrate to parents that the tool they need to see the warning signs is something they carry around with them all day, every day – their smartphone. The posters were created by Wunderman, an ad agency working with Childhood Eye Cancer Trust. The charity, originally called the Retinoblastoma Society, was formed in 1987. The organisation’s work towards battling eye cancer disease includes providing comprehensive support to

families, researching groundbreaking genetic discoveries and raising public awareness. Joy Felgate, CHECT’s chief executive, said: “This a great opportunity to raise awareness of the signs of retinoblastoma in an exciting and engaging way that will leave a lasting impression on those that see it. The information they take away could save a child’s life. We are very grateful to the team at Wunderman for their inspirational work on this campaign.” Matt Batten, Chief Creative Officer, Wunderman UK, said: “As a parent, doctor or carer of kids, it’s very impactful to think that you just looked into the eye of a real child who survived this terrible cancer. And you were able to have a first-hand experience of what to look for in your own loved ones, or those in your care.”

Ferne Animal Sanctuary -the story so far The story began in the dark days at the beginning of World War II in 1939. The Duchess of Hamilton, a great animal lover, realised there would be service personnel departing for duties who would be unable to take their pets with them - and that these

pets would have nowhere to go. Broadcasting to the nation on the BBC’s National Service, the Duchess invited anyone in that situation to bring their pets to her London home. These were then taken to her country Estate at Berwick St John in Dorset, where foster homes were

found in the area for the duration of the war. Inevitably, many service personnel never returned. So the search began to find permanent homes for the pets they had sadly left behind. As time went by, more and more homeless animals found their way to the Duchess who was

happy to provide for them until they could be rehomed. And that’s how Ferne Animal Sanctuary was born. The work still continues today at its present site at Wambrook, near Chard in Somerset.

The Sanctuary launched their “New Digs for Dogs” £1m project for 2014/15 in March 2014 to build a new enhanced kennel block, improved grooming and veterinary care room, information hub, social unit, offices, reception and purpose built rehoming centre at their site in Somerset. An incredible £457,311.97 has been raised so far, with the final push now underway! Patricia GardnerHarper, Acting Director at Ferne Animal Sanctuary said: “It’s hard to believe that through the generosity

of so many people, we are already at the final hurdle. “We are so close now, but still need to raise £42,688.03. “Everyone at Ferne knew we had a lot of supporters - but none of us can believe that so much money has been raised in such a short time, it’s staggering! “The new building is slowly becoming operational. The team at

Acheson Construction have done a great job and are holding our hands while the staff and animals settle in. “The official Grand Opening will be announced in the New Year, when we hope as many supporters as possible will come along to view this incredibly modern facility and join us in celebrating such a great achievement.

“I can’t really find the words to say a big enough ‘thank-you’ to everyone who has contributed in so many different ways. Please continue to help us and the animals - we’re nearly there!” The new re-homing centre is now based near the car park and has a brand new retail shop selling high-quality goods.
