The end of the school year is nearly upon us. Can you believe it? Time to move up a class or move on to ‘big’ school, just when you thought you had the hang of it! The summer holidays can’t come soon enough for some parents but as ever, the logistics of juggling child care and work still presents a major headache. Fortunately, holiday courses just get better and better and don’t always break the bank, especially if you can use childcare vouchers towards them. If you’re worried about the days stretching ahead of you, do look at our book review as there are some wonderful colouring/sticking books which will keep everyone very busy as well as some gripping, page turning tales.

Animals, adventure and great play!

If it’s animals you want we’ve got loads – from Shires and Shetlands to lambs and piglets. In fact, we’ve got a farmyard full of the critters! Don’t forget we’re still a real working farm so we have lots of animals in the fields as well – see if you can spot them on your tractor ride. If it’s play you prefer, we’ve got castles and forts, trampolines and skyways, sandpits and tractors, jeeps and playboats, indoor and outdoor rides and this summer, a jungle themed maize maze. Give the kids a treat – have a fun day on the farm with baby animals born this spring to visit. We have a posh flock of pedigree Texel sheep as well as a flock of crossbred ewes that had their lambs in late March and early April. All through the summer you can bottle feed lambs at 11.30am and 3pm each day and learn some amazing woolly facts!

During the summer you may also see Farmer Ed preparing some of the rams for shows or sales. Dolly the saddleback pig had beautiful piglets earlier this year. Our pedigree Devon cows have also had their calves this spring and don’t miss the milking show held in the animal barn at 11am and 4.30pm daily. Don’t forget you can also go carp fishing and

camp at Court Farm too – or hire a luxurious tipi, fully equipped with carpets, rugs, sofa beds, roll mats, cutlery, barbeque area, and furniture. We have two great play barns, right in the heart of our farmyard. In the first play barn we have slides, springers and platforms together with a great sandpit. Also situated in this barn are the ride on tractors and mini quadbikes. Smaller children will

love this barn with its range of play and small animals. Down in the saloon barn it’s Yeehaa time with our very own Cowboy Fort. Why not book a birthday party! We provide chairs, tables and tablecloths and the venue – you provide the party food. We’ve lots of space, play and activities including tractor rides and animal feeding to keep the kids amused for as long as you like.

Paignton Zoo and Living Coasts are fun places to visit – and you can learn lots of amazing facts about animals when you’re there. Both zoos have talks and presentations on most days. For example, at Living Coasts, Torquay’s coastal zoo, you can start with Penguin Breakfast at 10.30, then go on to puffins, otters, seals, stingrays and octopus. It’s hard to know when to have your own lunch! There are more talks in the afternoon. At Paignton Zoo, the talk schedule runs every day until the end of autumn half term (29th October). Some talks are by keepers, others by presenters from the Education team. They are all fun, informative and give you a real insight into life in the Zoo. Paignton Zoo opens at

10.00, which gives you plenty of time to get to Baboon Rock for 10.45, when you can join the baboons for breakfast – but don’t expect them to share! Later there are talks about Crocodile Swamp, pelicans, tigers, elephant and gorillas. There are extra talks at weekends and during school holidays on species like lemurs and giraffes. You can find out some amazing facts – for example, that giraffes have tongues as long as your forearm, or that adult male Yoda’s feet are the size of a dinner plate and in the wild he could kill a lion with a kick. Living Coasts and Paignton Zoo are the perfect mix of fun and discovery. For times and details of talks, go to the websites, www.paigntonzoo.org.uk and www.livingcoasts.org.uk and look out for signs on site.

A World of Adventure for Kids at WOMAD Who said that grown-ups get to have all the fun at festivals? WOMAD 2017 has plenty for everyone to enjoy – from mini festival-goers to veteran WOMAD-ers. It’s a weekend of fun and adventure for little ones as the green fields of Wiltshire are being transformed into a world of colour, sound and exploration for kids, with everything from baby yoga to Battle of the Bands to learning the Charleston and tree-climbing to keep everyone entertained. A special corner of WOMAD marked out just for kids, the World of Children is an oasis of fun, exploration and magic dedicated to playing and getting creative. This year’s elemental theme is celebrating the power of Earth, Fire, Water and Air, encouraging kids to get arty and let their imaginations run wild as they create fantastic costumes, puppets, masks, flags and more for the famous finale procession around the whole festival site at 6pm on Sunday, where giant suns and shining phoenixes mix

with steam punk dancing seahorses, shimmering fish and sparkling sea sprites. WOMAD Weenies (for under5’s) is a wonderful area of magical hands-on exploration for little ones with Groove Tots, Kora and a song or two along the way, or simply as a place to chill out and watch the festival go by… A kaleidoscope of activity, young ones can get stuck into everything from rocking out in their own band, slacklining, den building with the Kaleidoscope Project, circus skills workshops and magical woodland walks with trapeze artists to Family Zumba at the Happening Tent and tree

climbing at the Arboretum. With an atmosphere that is safe, welcoming and truly enchanting, the World of Children can be anything you want it to be; curl up with a book in the storytelling tipi, learn how to play an instrument in the Music Caravan, dance, play, explore and be inspired! Teens can come along, learn, jam and experience playing music together as a band at the Porthcawl Rock Club at Molly’s Bar, or hang out at the Mayflower Project where they can chill out with henna, hair braiding, craft up-cycling, music, circus and loads more.

About the big butterfly count

The big butterfly count is a nationwide survey aimed at helping us assess the health of our environment. It was launched in 2010 and has rapidly become the world's biggest survey of butterflies. Over 36,000 people took part in 2016, counting almost 400,000 individual butterflies and day-flying moths across the UK. big butterfly count 2017 will take place from Friday 14 July to Sunday 6 August.

Why count butterflies?

Butterflies react very quickly to change in their environment which makes them excellent biodiversity indicators. Butterfly declines are an early warning for other wildlife losses. That’s why counting butterflies can be described as taking the pulse of nature. The count will also assist us in identifying trends in species that will help us plan how to protect butterflies from extinction, as well as understand the effect of climate change on wildlife.

www.bigbutterflycount.org

Book Bag NEWS How to take part

Simply count butterflies for 15 minutes during bright (preferably sunny) weather during the big butterfly count. We have chosen this time of year because most butterflies are at the adult stage of their lifecycle, so more likely to be seen. Records are welcome from anywhere: from parks, school grounds and gardens, to fields and forests. If you are counting from a fixed position in your garden, count the maximum number of each species that you can see at a single time. For example, if you see three Red Admirals together on a buddleia bush then record it as 3, but if you only see one at a time then record it as 1 (even if you saw one on several occasions) –

this is so that you don’t count the same butterfly more than once. If you are doing your count on a walk, then simply total up the number of each butterfly species that you see during the 15 minutes. Use our handy identification chart - left to help you work out which butterflies you have seen. You can submit separate records for different dates at the same place, and for different places that you visit. Remember that your count is useful even if you do not see any butterflies or moths. You can send in your sightings online at www.bigbutterflycount.org or by using our FREE big butterfly count smartphone apps available for iOS and Android.

Celebrity backing Sir David Attenborough, President of Butterfly Conservation, Alan Titchmarsh MBE, Mike Dilger and Nick Baker, Vice Presidents of Butterfly Conservation

and the actress Joanna Lumley OBE have given their enthusiastic backing to the project and will support its launch and operation.

Creative expression in the form of dance, drama or musical performances can stimulate children’s imagination and help them bring their ideas to life. The performing arts can develop a child’s ability to empathise and improve their language and communication skills. The performing arts play a vital role in meeting children’s cultural, social and developmental needs. It helps them make sense of their emotions, introducing them to new ideas and allowing them to express opinions in a safe environment. As well as being thoroughly enjoyable for children, performing arts activities have been shown to have a significant impact on the process of improving Literacy levels in children. The ‘Talk for Writing’ approach which has been advocated by writer, poet

and educational consultant Pie Corbett includes ‘Imitation’ or experiencing and learning a text orally. This is central to his three-fold plan for improving writing. Ultimately, performing arts is an excellent way to empower children to think in a number of different ways and may have the added benefit of aiding their academic performance. At Razzamataz Yeovil we encourage all of our students to contribute their ideas, whether in devising drama pieces or choreographing dance phrases. We recognise the value of developing independent thinkers able to find creative solutions to problems, and who are more able to adapt to new situations. Razzamataz Yeovil offers classes for 2-18 year olds. Our new term starts on the 9th September with a FREE taster available for new students.

If you want to give your child the opportunity to learn new life skills, contact Claire to book your child’s place on 01935 411128 or email yeovil@razzamataz.co.uk

14 Parent Talk Summer 2017

Over a third of parents believe that suntans are a sign of good health And a quarter of parents with young children have encouraged them to get a sun tan despite the dangers of UV New research, released by the Met Office in conjunction with the NHS England #CoverUpMate skin cancer campaign, has revealed a worryingly relaxed attitude towards sun care amongst many parents of young children. Sunburn in childhood has been strongly linked to the development of skin cancer in later years, making it a vital time for parents to ensure their children are protected. The study – conducted amongst 1,000 parents with children aged 11 and under – revealed that one in 14 parents admit they have NEVER applied sunscreen to their children. Despite suntans being a sign of the skin being damaged by UV rays (understood by 47% of respondents) over a third incorrectly believe that suntans are a sign of good health. Incredibly, a quarter of parents with children aged 11 and under have encouraged them to get a tan one way or another, with one in ten parents of children aged 2-7 admitting they have encouraged them to sunbathe. Even more worryingly, 7% of parents with children aged 6-11 have allowed their children to use a UV sun tanning machine (sunbed). Furthermore, 10% of parents with children aged 11 and under admit they have told their children to take their top off in the sunshine so they don’t get tan lines. Whilst shocking, the figures can in some ways be explained by a lack of knowledge amongst parents of the damage the sun can inflict. For example:

● 7% do not know that UV rays make you burn and have strong links to cancer ● 15% do not know you can still be exposed to UV rays on cool or cloudy days ● 46% incorrectly think you can feel UV rays when the sun is strong (you cannot feel UV rays) ● 21% do not realise you are at most risk from UV rays between May and September When asked about how and when they take precautions against the sun with their young children, more than one in five parents with children aged 11 and under said they wait until their child starts to visibly burn (turn pink) before they would decide to apply any sunscreen. A similar number said they wait until their child requests it. In addition, by the time their child has reached eight years old, 23% of parents expect them to apply sunscreen themselves. Many parents are also unlikely to know which days they need to give their children extra protection, considering just 19% check the UV forecast each day. Indeed, 40% of respondents said they have never checked the UV forecast. UV levels are not necessarily dependent on the temperature or whether it’s sunny, meaning cooler or cloudy days do not automatically mean lower UV levels. As well as the longer-term risks of sun exposure in childhood, many parents will experience more immediate negative effects. Seventeen per cent of children 11 and under have experienced ‘painful’ sunburn four or more times in the past two years,

whilst 40% have experienced sunburn to some extent in that time. Four per cent of parents say their child has been sunburned so severely, they had to be admitted to hospital, whilst six per cent say that sunburn has ruined a family holiday. Clare Nasir, Met Office presenter and meteorologist, said: “As a sun-savvy mum, the findings are really worrying. Young children can’t be expected to apply their own sunscreen – they are unlikely to do it thoroughly, or forgo it completely. Protecting against skin cancer isn’t something parents should leave to chance. “UV levels are usually highest between May and September. Clouds don’t always stop UV rays, and unlike the sun’s warmth, it’s difficult to know when they may be harming you. You can protect yourself and your family by checking the UV forecast on the Met Office app.” Nigel Acheson, NHS England South Region Medical Director, said: “It’s important that parents take extra care to protect their babies and children. Their skin is much more sensitive than adult skin, and damage caused by repeated exposure to UV could lead to skin cancer developing in later life. If the Met Office UV forecast is moderate or high, children aged under six months should spend time in the shade and out of direct sunlight – particularly from 11am to 3pm. We should all remember to cover up with suitable clothing and wear sunscreen with a good UV-A protection. If you’re unsure please visit the NHS Choices website for the latest sun safety advice.”

Royal Society for Blind Children launches new wine tasting fundraising challenge National charity the Royal Society for Blind Children (RSBC) has launched a new wine tasting challenge event. The fun initiative invites groups of friends or families to come together and raise a glass as well as some much needed funds for blind children living in England and Wales. The aptly named Winefold Challenge can be played at home or after hours with work colleagues. Blindfolded participants will taste a selection of wines throughout the challenge, guessing their colour and grape variety. The winner is the taster who can name the most varieties, from Pinot and Sauvignon to Shiraz and Grenache. RSBC exists to support blind children, young people and their families living in England and Wales. The money raised by their supporters is used to

deliver services and expertise that give children the skills and confidence they need to live beyond their sight loss. The challenge has been designed to be enjoyed by wine lovers across the country, from novice tasters to the wine connoisseur. RSBC has developed a guide for anyone who wants to take up the challenge. The Winefold Challenge pack includes concise information on how RSBC supports blind children, young people and their families and why they need support from donors. The pack also includes tips on how to plan the event and gives some great hints on how to tell a Merlot from a Malbec. The charity has also developed some fun online resources and

free downloads for hosts to set the scene for their event, with bottle covers and a Spotify playlist among them. Liz Ives, Events Fundraising Manager, said of the launch, “We are very excited to introduce our first wine tasting challenge event to new and existing supporters of RSBC. The charity has held a number of blindfolded wine tasting events over the years, with great success, so we’re confident that it will be a hit with our supporters. Unlike many charity led challenge events, we’re not putting a fundraising target on this one. We will welcome any proceeds from the event, which will all be used to improve the lives of our beneficiaries.”

Fundraisers can download their challenge pack by visiting www.rsbc.org.uk or by calling RSBC direct on 020 3198 0225

Bespoke Support Network partner up with Winston's Wish to help parents protect their children Essex Based/British Company Bespoke Support Network have teamed up with Winston’s Wish, a charity that supports the process that children go through when they are bereaved. #SupportingWishes is the campaign they have started; it focuses on the charity and the work they do for the children that have lost parents. It also aims to make more parents aware so that they can begin putting measures in place to ensure their child’s future is protected. Over the next three months BSN will be making generous donations to this worthy cause from each and every will and life insurance policy they sell. Why? Because of the sideways disinheritance trap that is leaving many children and young adults without either parents or an inheritance. Unbeknown to over 75% of the population your children could be disinherited when you die. This is often unintentional but with so much at risk, both BSN and Winston’s Wish would like

to draw the public’s attention to the notion that this can happen. How it happens… When couples decide to make a will they often think that it’s best to keep things as straightforward as possible. Most of the time they will decide to leave everything to

their spouse or partner in the event that they pass. This is usually so that their partner can continue to live in the same house and have access to all their finances. The wills that people write often state that whoever dies last is to leave all their assets

and estate to the children. However, people don’t tend to consider the possibility that after the first person has died, the other partner could decide to alter their will. They could decide to leave their assets and estate to someone other than the children. This is particularly

well known when there is a new spouse or partner. Sometimes it can be an accident. When the surviving partner decides to remarry, the old will is automatically cancelled and the partner may not consider this. Following this, with no valid will in place, if the partner was to pass away the new spouse would be entitled to everything under the rules of intestacy. Just imagine how you would feel if you were told that upon your passing your children would end up with next to nothing even if you had made a will (which nearly 70% of people in the UK have not done). An increase in blended families has further highlighted this issue, along with a growing number of children born to

parents who are not legally married. This can become even more difficult if you have more than one child who does not share the same mother or father, especially if you want to leave an inheritance to both your children and your partner. If you have children there is no doubt that you will want to safeguard their future. BSN’s aim is to do just that, whilst also aiding the children Winston’s Wish work with. Over the next six months BSN will be offering completely free advice to the British public about making a will and life insurance.

If you would like to take advantage of what BSN are offering please phone: 0300 303 3441 email: info@bespokesupportnetwork.com website: www.bespokesupportnetwork.com You can now make donations via the BSN website, please find the link on the BSN homepage to donate to Winston’s Wish.

Seven times more children write above expected level when they enjoy writing, shows new research National Literacy Trust publishes top tips for parents to get their children writing The National Literacy Trust has recently published research showing that children who enjoy writing and who write creatively outside school do significantly better in the classroom. However, the research also shows that far too many children are missing out on these benefits, as half of pupils (49.3%) say they don’t enjoy writing outside school. The research was launched to mark the very first National Writing Day, a campaign coordinated by charity First Story to give children across the UK the opportunities and ideas to give writing a go and experience its benefits. The research report, Writing for Enjoyment and its Link to Wider Reading, also found that all children – regardless of whether they enjoy writing or not – face the same barriers to writing outside school: around half of pupils can’t decide what to write (43.7% of pupils who enjoy writing; 55.9% of pupils

who don’t enjoy writing) and a third struggle with spelling and grammar (30.4% of pupils who enjoy writing; 34.5% of pupils who don’t enjoy writing). The report stresses that helping children develop a love of writing is important for their academic success. Children who enjoy writing outside school are seven times more likely to write above the expected level for their age compared with children who don’t enjoy writing (23.2% vs 3.2%); and children who write creatively outside school are twice as likely to write above the expected level for their age compared with children who don’t write creatively outside school (19.3% vs 7.9%). What’s more, children who enjoy writing also benefit from being more confident writers, write more often and write a greater range of formats. The National Literacy Trust has published some top tips for parents to help their child develop a love of writing in their free time:

● Be a writing role model and make writing more visible to your child at home. The more adults are seen to be writing, both for a purpose and because it’s something they’ve chosen to do, the more children will be encouraged to give it a go. ● Encourage your child to write about subjects they love, whether that is animals, superheroes, dancing or football. Your child will write best if they write about topics that they know about or that are hobbies. ● Keep a box of writing tools and prompts for your child to use. Fill the box with pens, colouring pencils and notepads. You can also include interesting objects and ask your child to weave them into a story. ● It’s not just about fiction; many children may prefer writing other genres. Your child may prefer to draw a comic strip, write a report of a football match they have watched, or make up a recipe instead of writing a traditional story.

follow us on twitter @parenttalksw visit us at www.parenttalk.org.uk

If your child wants to write a story, laying it out visually can help. Work with your child to develop a ‘story map’ where you draw pictures of key elements of a story in a line and build a piece of writing from there. ● Why not suggest to your child that you make your own family book, newspaper or magazine? Theme it around a recent family trip, holiday or experience and get everyone in the family to contribute a short piece of writing. ● Be appreciative of the time and effort your child has put in to a piece of writing; if they are having fun and feel good about their work they will be more likely to persevere. ● Focus on the fact your child is being creative and writing rather than correcting their mistakes. ● Look out for children’s writing competitions – you can often find them on the National Literacy Trust’s website: w w w. l i t e r a c y t r u s t . o rg. u k / competitions The National Literacy Trust ●

has more top tips, advice and ideas for parents to get their child writing on their Word for Life website: www.wordsforlife. org.uk Jonathan Douglas, Director of the National Literacy Trust, said: “Our research consistently finds that children who enjoy writing do much better at school, but it also shows that far too many pupils still don’t enjoy writing and this could

be holding them back from reaching their full potential. For the past 20 years, we’ve seen a real focus on reading for enjoyment initiatives across the UK, which have reaped fantastic benefits for children. It’s now time to give writing for enjoyment the focus it deserves. By giving children and adults new opportunities to get writing, we will show that writing is for everyone!” Parent Talk Summer 2017 15

School meals mission appeals to get peas on pupils' plates The Yes Peas! campaign and the UK pea vining industry have launched a school meals mission and are appealing for schools up and down the UK to put peas on pupils’ plates during Great British Pea Week (10 – 16th July 2017). Run by the Yes Peas! campaign, Great British Pea Week aims to recognise the 700 British pea farmers who work tirelessly all year round to produce two billion portions of peas to feed the nation. The UK is the largest producer and consumer of frozen peas in Europe, with the average person in Britain eating nearly 9,000 peas per year. The School Meals Mission aims to highlight the importance of healthy school meals and the extraordinary nutritional power of the nation’s favourite family vegetable. One 85 gram serving of peas, cooked, provides 50 calories, 4 grams of protein, 8 grams of carbohydrate (of which 3.5 grams are sugars), 3.8 grams of fibre, 17mg of vitamin C (28% of the recommended daily allowance) and 0.2mg Thiamine (B1) (15% of the recommended daily allowance). Schools are being urged to pledge their support via social media and share images of their reci-peas during

#GreatBritishPeaWeek. Schools nationwide will each receive a recipe e-book, full to the brim with healthy meal ideas, to inspire them to put peas back on pupils’ plates. Yes Peas! is also calling on families themselves to engage with the campaign by sending in their own peatastic creations! TV chef and Yes Peas! ambassador, Rachel Green, said: “Great British Pea Week is a great celebration of British

pea farming. It’s truly amazing how our 700 farmers produce over two billion portions a year! It is certainly something to celebrate and commemorate. “We’re excited to be inviting schools to pledge their support for Great British Pea Week during the harvesting season - peas are an amazing source of nutrients and we want to inspire children to enjoy eating greens and educate the nation on where their peas come from!”

Pledge to support Great British Pea Week at https://www.thunderclap.it/projects/58304-great-britishpea-week-2017?locale=en and share your images and activity between 10 – 16th July by posting to @YesPeas on Twitter or www.facebook.com/yespeas using the hashtag #GreatBritishPeaWeek or emailing yespeas@hatchpr.co.uk

Two thirds of British children worry about adult issues Two thirds of British children have been revealed to be worrying about typically adult issues, with British parents most likely to respond by reassuring their children or telling them white lies instead of being honest with them. The research was carried out by www.VoucherCodesPro. co.uk as part of an ongoing study into the lifestyles and behaviours of Britons. 2,319 British parents, all of whom stated that they had at least one child under the age of 10, were quizzed about their children’s lifestyles and what it was that worried them. Initially all respondents were asked, ‘Do you have the type of relationship with your children where they feel they can come and speak to you if something is bothering them?’ to which the majority of respondents stated ‘yes’ (56%), while others said either ‘I’d like to think so’ (30%) or ‘if not me, then someone else in the family’ (14%). All respondents were then asked, ‘Has your child

ever expressed concern over something that you feel they’re too young to be worrying about?’, with two thirds of respondents, 65%, stating that this had happened 'at least once'. Respondents were then asked to state what their child/children had expressed concerns about that they’d considered them too young to be worrying about. When provided with a list of possible responses and told to select all that applied, the top five worries were revealed as follows: 1. That loved ones will die - 48% 2. Money/financial issues (e.g. debt) - 37% 3. That they won't have a successful career - 30% 4. Their own personal safety (i.e. when out and about) - 29% 5. That their parents will break up (separate/divorce) - 25% When looking into why children were worried about such issues, according to the poll, 37% of the parents found out their children had heard things from their peers at school, and a further 33% had heard

conversations between adults around them which they’d picked up on. 19% had become worried about such adult topics from things they’d seen on social media (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc.). George Charles, spokesperson for www. VoucherCodesPro.co.uk , commented on the findings: “Young children should lead a happy life; they don’t need to be worrying about such adult issues as death, debt and divorce. They should be out playing with their friends, making memories and causing mischief. “Unfortunately, it’s so easy for children to get come across adult issues like these. Whilst many social media channels have age restrictions, that doesn’t stop many youngsters creating accounts with false ages – then leaving themselves open to stumble across unsettling images, videos and content. We’re living in a day and age where we can’t shield our children from everything.”

With the summer holidays looming, parents across the UK are expecting to spend £468 on entertaining their children, according to the Post Office Money annual Parents’ Summer Spending report. The costs associated with the summer break have decreased by 14 per cent compared with last year – although remain almost a fifth higher than in 2012, when Post Office Money first conducted the research. With a third of parents admitting they spent more than expected last summer, the anticipated fall in costs this year may suggest that many plan to keep a closer eye on their spending over the coming weeks. Summer expenditure year-on-year With the recent heatwave sweeping the country many parents will already have kicked off their summer spending; 27 per cent of parents spend more as a result of good weather, as they look to make the most of the sunshine. When it comes to entertaining, two in five parents expect to spend the most money visiting attractions, while 37 per cent of parents

say family meals out will be their biggest cost. Just over a quarter expect to spend the most money on treats for their children, with 22 per cent stating a holiday abroad will be their biggest expense. There are also additional costs, aside from entertaining their children, which bump up the overall cost for mum and dads. Parents expect to spend an average of £43 on other people’s children in addition to their own, as well as expecting to pay £78 on childcare and £97 on fuel – pushing the total potential summer expenditure to £686. While their children will be excitedly counting down the days until summer, many parents are busy planning how they’ll cover the increased cost of summer, with over half worried about how they will afford the summer costs – 41 per cent also feel under pressure to compete with other parents’ spending. Owen Woodley, Managing Director at Post Office Money, said: “There can be many hidden costs over the summer months and while two in five parents we spoke to have the cash to cover these additional

costs, many do not. 13% of parents told us they are planning on dipping into their savings, 9% will draw on their credit card and some families are even saying they’re likely to miss bill payments or even take a mortgage holiday to help manage this overspend. “Planning in advance to find the best ways to cover any shortfall now can help relieve financial pressure and avoid negative financial implications further down the line.” Owen Woodley continues: “If parents do plan to use credit, they should review their credit services to ensure they have the best value product to suit their needs. Avoid going into an unapproved overdraft to avoid unnecessary fees and penalty charges and review if your credit card offers the most competitive rate of interest. Some credit cards offer 0% interest rates, allowing you to spread the costs over a number of months, without incurring interest on the balance until the interest free period ends. These cards can also provide balance transfer facilities where you can transfer existing credit balances to another card that charges less interest.

Post Office Money’s top five tips to prepare for the costs of summer: ● Plan ahead – outlining your intended weekly spend during the summer months can help you stick to your outlined budget and avoid any unanticipated overspend. ● Where you spot a shortfall and are likely to need to rely on credit, make sure you have the right credit product for your needs. Don’t risk going into an unapproved overdraft. ● If you’re going to use a credit card – do you have a 0% card so you have longer to repay and no interest charges? ● Track down deals online in advance, e.g. 2 for 1 offers can be found for theme parks, the cinema, family days out and restaurants. ● If travelling by train you can keep the costs down if you book tickets in advance and avoid travelling at peak times. Post Office Money offers the Matched Credit Card, which gives customers 0% interest on purchases and balance transfers for 30 months and is currently joint first in the best-buy tables for cards offering both interestfree purchase and balance transfer periods.
