Dear All...

Welcome back and we seem to be really getting into the swing of summer. This month, there’s so much to look forward to: festivals, street theatre, outdoor theatre, BBQs, cream teas and all to be enjoyed outdoors. When it comes to organising the long summer break and how to organise childcare, read on for details of art and craft classes, forest school, sports clubs, residential camps; there’s plenty to keep them busy! As for actually taking a break yourself, did you know you can get a 20% discount when you hire a car in the UK – worth considering if you’re planning a holiday to the Outer Hebrides and want to spare the wear and tear on your own car. Happy reading Best wishes, Tamsin (Editor)

Children’s charity launches tasty cream tea delivery Children’s charity Action Medical Research has launched a call for the nation to take a break this summer and enjoy a delicious cream tea delivered to the door. Its unique cream-teas-in-a-box campaign will see the perfect afternoon pick-me-up delivered directly to homes, workplaces and schools across the country on Friday 1 July 2016. And the UK-wide children’s charity is calling on YOU to get together with friends or colleagues to put the kettle on, tuck in to a tasty cream tea and help raise funds for sick babies and children. Last year Action Medical Research raised more than £60,000 as it sent out more than 10,000 cream-teas-ina-box packed by its army of volunteers. For 2016, the mouthwatering Action Cream Teas - which come in a box priced just £6 - will again contain two freshly baked scones perfect for piling high with oozing strawberry jam and Rodda’s Cornish clotted cream, ready to be washed down with a refreshing cup of Yorkshire Tea. Research is the key to saving many children from a lifetime of suffering, yet surprisingly, medical research into conditions that devastate children’s lives is poorly funded. With the help of its supporters, Action Medical Research has played a significant role in many medical breakthroughs since it began in 1952, from the development of the first UK polio vaccines to the use of ultrasound in pregnancy. It is currently funding research into meningitis, Down syndrome, epilepsy and premature birth, as well

With appropriate Beach Boys music blaring, we set off on our surfing weekend away to the coolest of all Cornish seaside towns! The Esplanade family Beachside Hotel overlooking the world-famous Fistral Beach in Newquay welcomed us by its friendly staff and laid-back beach vibe. The hotel really has the most impressive view of the beach, and has an on-site surf school as well as free family holiday activities on offer. We were shown to our modern airy family room with a good sized double bed for the adults and bunk beds for the kids, flat screen TV and en-suite bathroom. Not to be left behind, the dog came too and had a dog bed and bowl provided to make her feel at home! After a pre-dinner drink in the comfy beachfront lounge, we watched the most fantastic sunset in the relaxed Ocean View Restaurant on our first night, where we had a delicious A La Carte menu made from local produce and fresh seafood, and kids menu served to us by the lovely staff, offering excellent value included in our weekend break tariff. The hotel has so much to offer families, whatever the weather, with a heated indoor pool with Jacuzzi and sauna,

soft play area, and games room. There’s an outdoor play area as well as a mini tennis court and a host of activities available from Build a Bear workshops to T-shirt painting and children’s alcohol free cocktail making classes! The beach was our playground with rock pooling, kite flying and a two hour surf lesson booked at the Quiksilver Surf School. Every one from beginner to pro can be catered for. Equipment hire, indoor changing rooms and hot showers are included and the coaching with Dom our instructor was first class. By the end of the lesson, we had all managed to stand up on our boards (although I think we all

On our second night we ate out at The Stable, a small chain of friendly restaurants from the West Country that pride themselves on locally sourced ingredients of mouth watering pizzas, hand-crafted pies and salads with an affordable price tag. Well behaved dogs are welcome at this most scenic Stable to date, with breathtaking panoramic views of Fistral beach and surf from the balcony outside or from the rustic interior with long wooden tables inside. Dan the manager gave us a warm welcome, all the staff were very knowledgeable on the amazing range of ciders for us to choose from and the selection of the super thin and crisp pizzas that we had were really really good. Available all year round, as a weekend or mid-week break, the Surf Adventure package at The Esplanade Hotel provides the perfect combination of time in the water and time to enjoy the surf lifestyle on the beach! The Esplanade really is a special place where the whole family can relax together whatever their age. New for 2016 to make your little ones’ stay even more special, they are offering #HolidayHyped extras - A kids VIP package which gives them the chance to flex their inner Bieber or secret Cyrus. (and adults) to be competent and confident in and around water is essential. To raise awareness of the importance of water safety, Drowning Prevention Week (18th -26th June 2016), the national campaign of drowning prevention charity the Royal Life Saving Society UK www.rlss.org.uk aims to cut down the number of drowning and near-drowning incidences that happen in the UK every year. SPATA offers tips on staying safe in and around water; ● Always check the depth of the water Shallow water can deepen suddenly, therefore if you are not a strong swimmer you should not swim out of your depth and set clear boundaries about where you will swim. Also, don’t jump or dive into water that you cannot see the bottom of, even if you swim there regularly. Rocks and debris could have moved in flowing water that will make it unsafe. ● Look out for weeds One or two weeds aren’t uncommon in slow flowing water, but a spaghettilike forest can entangle a swimmer’s legs. Try to avoid them. If you do encounter some, slow your swim speed right down and either float using your arms to paddle or turn around slowly. ● Watch out for strong currents The best water has flowing currents and therefore you should be careful to judge the strength of the current to assess if you are a strong enough swimmer to deal with it. Always think about your escape route if you do get washed downstream. ● Don’t swim alone People should ideally swim where there are others to supervise them, as this may reduce the risk of drowning, as there will be someone to rescue or raise an alarm if a swimmer gets into difficulty.

This month, CRAFTY children from Somerset can create a felt unicorn using a kit created in aid of charity. The Pet and Craft Centres at Monkton Elm Garden & Pet Centre have teamed up to produce a ‘Candyfloss the Unicorn’ craft kit in aid of Conquest Centre, which provides horse-based activities for children and adults with physical and learning disabilities. Julia Langley, Craft Centre Assistant, at the award-winning, independent, family-run garden centre near Taunton, said: “As part of this year’s charity fundraising we thought we’d put a craft kit together for children who want to take up a hobby. “The kit contains everything children will need to make a felt unicorn. There are a variety of colours available and each kit comes with helpful instructions. Children should always be accompanied by an adult when making the unicorns. The kits will cost £3.99 and £2 from each sale will go to the charity. “We chose to raise money for Conquest Centre because

we wanted to support a local animal charity and many of us know someone who has benefitted from animal therapy related activities.” Conquest Centre, which is based at Norton Fitzwarren, provides horse-based activities for people with physical and learning disabilities, including emotional and behavioural challenges, and through this benefits their health and well-being. It delivers these activities in an inclusive equine environment which welcomes the whole community. Its work focuses on each person’s ability rather than disability and aims to allow each individual to achieve their personal goals. Conquest began its journey in 1965. Today it caters for 180 disabled children and adults each week, as well as families/ carers, students, volunteers, public riders and local clubs and associations. As well as individuals who access Conquest directly, its services are used by Community Payback, local authority care homes, special schools/ SEN departments, Somerset

gorgeous and we know they will be extremely popular, a lovely gift to receive or to give.” The ‘Candyfloss the unicorn’ kit will be available from the Pet and Craft Centres at Monkton Elm Garden & Pet Centre for £3.99 each with £2 from each sale being donated to Conquest Centre.

The Best of British One of the most quintessentially English outdoor features is the perfectly striped lawn. Each year, Briggs & Stratton, the world’s largest producer of petrol engines for lawnmowers and outdoor power equipment, celebrates this with its search to find Britain’s Best Lawn. The competition, in its eleventh year, is now open for 2016 entries and Briggs & Stratton, along with the lead sponsor of Britain’s Best Lawn 2016, Hayter Lawnmowers, is looking for passionate and dedicated gardeners who maintain their lawn to the highest standard. Ian Small, sales and marketing manager for Briggs & Stratton, commented: “Britain’s Best Lawn is open to

everyone, no matter how big or small their lawn. It’s not about the size, it’s about the quality and the dedication that goes into maintaining it. “Lawns are increasingly under threat, yet they have endless benefits not just for the environment but also for physical health and mental well-being. That is why we want to do all we can preserve and celebrate lawns - Britain’s Best Lawn has been our way of doing

that for the past eleven years.” Past winners of Britain’s Best Lawn have spent up to 10 hours per day maintaining their lawn in peak season, with one even manicuring the edges with nail scissors! Not only will the winner receive the prestigious title but first prize also includes a prize bundle worth over £1000 to help the winner maintain their award winning lawn.

The winner will receive a Platinum Limited Edition Harrier 41 Autodrive lawnmower, as well as a selection of lawncare tools from leading garden tool brand Wilkinson Sword, and a £150 voucher to spend in their local garden centre. Two runners up will each receive a Toro leaf blower and a £100 garden centre voucher. To enter the competition, and to find out more information, please visit www.britainsbestlawn.co.uk. Camp Wild at Wildwood Escot

Grandparents fund holidays! Research has revealed that, of the three quarters of grandparents that holiday abroad with the grandchildren, the majority cover the children’s costs to tune of over £700; in spite of the fact that the parents are also in attendance most of the time. The team at www.Jetcost. co.uk undertook the survey as part of an ongoing study into how families holiday abroad, particularly when it comes to children. 2,186 Britons aged 50 and over, all of whom stated they had at least one grandchild under the age of 15 years old, were quizzed about their travels. Initially all respondents were asked ‘Have you ever been on holiday abroad with your grandchildren?’ to which three quarters of respondents stated ‘yes’ they had. All these respondents were then asked whether or not the child’s parents had been in attendance on the holiday too, to which the majority replied that they had been. When asked if they contributed to the cost of taking their grandchildren away on holiday, two thirds of grandparents admitted that they covered the cost for their grandchild. When asked to estimate how much they had spent taking the grandchildren abroad, and told to take into

account the cost of the holiday, food and drink, days out and souvenirs, the results showed that they paid out, on average, £719.60 per child. All respondents that stated that they had holidayed abroad with their grandchildren without the parents were asked why they had done so. When provided with a list of possible reasons why, the most common responses were ‘their parents couldn’t afford to take them, so we took them in order for them not to miss out’, ‘it gave their parents some time to themselves’ and ‘their parents couldn’t get the time off work to partake in a family holiday’. A spokesperson for Jetcost. co.uk commented: “It’s great that grandparents are able to go on holidays with their grandchildren and

that family holidays are so popular; it’s a brilliant bonding experience and a chance to venture out into the world as a little tribe! Having said that, and though it’s nice for grandparents to treat their families, it’s also important that they are not taken for granted. The trend of grandparents paying for the little ones is interesting – does it suggest that they have more disposable income than the parents? Or does it simply show that they like to spend their money on these jaunts as a way of looking after the family? Either way, the important thing is for parents to pull their weight as much as they can, whether that’s by paying for their offspring or being the first up in the mornings to reserve the sun loungers!”

Now with even more animals, Camp Wild at Wildwood Escot has never been a wilder place to stay! Camp Wild is run by Wildwood Trust, a wildlife conservation charity with a passion for British native wildlife, past and present. As well as otters, red squirrels, wild boar and birds of prey, Wildwood Escot is now also home to a handsome British wildcat and a pair of beautiful lynx. Designed to blend into Escot’s unspoilt setting, featuring 1100 acres of stunning

Devon countryside, Camp Wild is a highly innovative summer camp delivering a programme that is totally unique and a surefire winner. Just for kids aged 7-12 (or 6-12 for day camp), Camp Wild accommodation is at Yurt Village where children sleep in the yurts, after spending their days out and about on the estate. They feed the animals, build rafts for river fun, learn bushcraft skills, play games, and when Wildwood Escot closes its gates to visitors, the

park becomes the private playground for Camp Wild. Later, the children settle down around the camp fire for stories, toasting marshmallows and an evening BBQ… A perfect summer, full of happy memories. Camp Wild takes place for the first 3 weeks of the summer holidays for day camp or residential bookings. Yurt Village is also available for school or group residential visits from May to the end of October.

EDUCATION, INFORMATION

Taunton School Infant Experience is ‘Outstanding’ By Mrs Kathy McLauchlan, Head of Nursery and Pre Prep at Taunton School THE beauty of an independent school education is the independent curriculum that goes with it. We can take the best of tradition, research and assessment options, without being dictated to by the wider political agenda! Communication, knowledge, breadth and skills are all necessary to succeed – we say ‘yes’ to assessment and tracking but no to stressful SATS! The Taunton School infant experience in our Pre-Prep is never less than outstanding, as endorsed by recent consecutive inspections. Bespoke learning, discovering and teaching in small classes with specialist teachers ensures your child remains curious and sparkly, gaining a firm foundation and a positive attitude to learning. It is cool to learn from five (even earlier in our Nursery School) and it is really important to build that feeling of self belief and success from the earliest possible age. Well being is at the top of our agenda and research shows that happy children,

THE PRIMARY CHOICE playful children, safe risk takers and confident children who are excellent communicators are successful! Learning is fun and all of our children are high achievers because of the curriculum and opportunities on offer. Who knows what talents your children may have so a breadth of choice, specialism and small

classes ensures success for all. We are now open 51 weeks a year to make life easier for our families and we have various packages, a variety of payment schemes and a real choice. There is nothing more valuable than investing in your child's education from the earliest opportunity! www.tauntonschool.co.uk

Why choose King’s Hall School? King’s Hall School has much to feel proud of; a beautiful 50-acre rural setting with rambling woodlands, enviable class sizes with exceptional teachers, outstanding facilities available to all of the children and superb achievements in academic, sporting and cultural arenas. However, whilst the School values these features immensely, the most important differences are not so easy to define, we call them ‘The Immeasurables’ of the School: the happiness of the children, the mutual respect fostered between staff and pupils, the sense of purpose and the strong family feel all surround an incredible array of opportunities to grow both in and out of class. We believe it is about who you are and how you feel about yourself more than what you know. The amazing achievements are natural by-products of a confidence-building and purposeful experience, full of chances to explore potential. Every child has the opportunity to flourish in

Prep School is right for my child? There is no such thing as the best nursery, just the best fit for the child and the family. To help you decide whether we might be the best fit we offer taster sessions and opportunities to join us for ‘Come and Play!’ mornings. How many children can you take? We have an excellent staff to child ratio and will only take a maximum of 24 children in each setting as we believe it is important to provide the space and the opportunity for each child to be nurtured and to flourish as an individual. and valuable for their future learning journey. We highly value the lessons that play can teach, and believe that play can and will provide your child with the tools they need to be an independent, active learner in the future; developing their problem solving, social skills, creativity and concentration, through many means such as craft, music and physical play. The children thoroughly enjoy maintaining our award winning garden, as well as exploring the brand new mud kitchen. Getting muddy, having fun, and learning seem to go hand in hand in these areas. The children love to see the fruit and vegetables

they have planted and cared for themselves grow. We are able to experience some of nature’s best, with walks through the grounds to see the changes that the weather and seasons have on our environment, as well as mini beast hunts and squirrel spotting! Each child is valued as an individual, and as you are the expert on your child, we value your involvement during their time with us, through stay and play sessions, day trips, visitor days and parent committee events, as well as annual events such as Christmas singing, the teddy bears picnic and sports day.

Read a story to a child – even when you’re not there Life in 2016 is busy. Everyone works long hours, has long commutes and more and more parents see them travelling away for work regularly. We live increasingly dispersed lived lives. Important family members in a child’s life do not live around the corner. Social networks allow adults to connect with each other, regardless of where they are. But what about adults connecting with the important children in their lives? Sitting with a child and reading a story to them is one of the very special moments in your relationship with them. It not only creates a bond, fires their imagination with stories but it will, hopefully, give them a lifelong love of reading. But what if you can’t always be there? At the start of 2016 husband and wife, Riz and Jo Rabbani, launched Read me a Story with the aim to use today’s technology to ease the pressure and guilt of not always being there in person. Readmeastory.co.uk want to encourage that relationship building and bonding between people and that special child

in their life. Of course not to mention the academic benefits that reading to children has – including better communication skills, improved basic speech skills and mastering of language faster. With a new website now live, the site allows parents, grandparents and family members the opportunity to virtually ‘be there’. Users simply visit the site, choose their book and using webcam technology, record themselves reading the story. The recording can then be played back and once everyone is happy with the outcome, it can be emailed to the person of your choice. Hearing that person’s voice is important for any child as it can act as a comforter, but being able to see that person at the top of the screen reading their favourite story is the real highlight. Technology is what drives communication. Yes there is telephone, skype, email, facetime and even greeting cards – but Read me a Story is much more. It is an additional communication tool, and at the same time it helps improve literacy, enhance relationships

with children whilst at the same time encourage and reignite the love of reading, across the UK and beyond. “As Parents ourselves we faced the same problem as everyone else – working long hours, long commutes home and travelling away for work – which meant not seeing our daughter before bedtime. This problem only doubled when we had our second child”, comments Riz Rabbani, Owner of Read me a Story. “We also spoke to other families who had parents living abroad, husbands who worked away for longer periods of time and this set our mind to create something to help fill this gap. We want to address the issue of absence and distance between grown-ups and the important children in their lives. Bringing back the love of reading to children, even when you can’t physically be there”. “Connecting people with the ones they love and providing them with the opportunity to read their favourite story to them is great and the feedback we’ve received so far has been astounding”. “The important thing for

Technology of the future could make children more active The technology often blamed for rising childhood obesity will in the future help make children fitter and healthier, a new report predicts. In an age where there is an abundance of technology, popular devices such as computers, tablets, video game consoles and smart phones, technology has often been linked to record levels of inactivity and even poor diets among British teenagers. However, according to the Future of Play report by future trends experts Futurizon, advances in the sector will encourage kids to be more active. But perhaps the most exciting change predicted for the next decade will be the arrival of augmented reality. According to the report, which was commissioned by Soreen and the Youth Sport Trust, over the coming years augmented reality glasses, which superimpose computergenerated data onto the real world view, will become as normal as owning a smart phone. It will mean that, while previous generations of technology obliged people to stare at a screen, AR glasses will encourage users to get out and explore the world. It foresees that the glasses will revolutionise everything from

family outings to school trips as it blends the virtual and real worlds and encourages people to go out and be active, with computers enhancing the real world. It will also encourage kids to use their imagination and conjure up scenarios to inspire active play. Meanwhile a new survey by Opinion Matter of over one thousand parents of primary school children found that 80% say fitness tech has already helped increase their family’s activity levels. They also agreed that tech fitness gadgets have given their children more confidence with the majority saying it had boosted activity levels and improved happiness. Over three quarters of the respondents said that children are now so tech savvy, that digital devices should be used to help them exercise, Bethan Brown, marketing director from Soreen, said: "We all know how hard it is to be active so it’s good to know that technology can be a help and not be a hindrance in getting families moving. “By using websites, fitness tech accessories and apps that keep us motivated, we are already seeing how tech can help keep us active and this report shows that’s its set to increase.

"As part of our partnership with Youth Sport Trust, we have already developed an online resource to get families active and it’s exciting to know that, in the future, technology may continue to help kids to be more active, not hinder them, as well as bringing families closer." us is to help increase the opportunities people have to connect with the most important people in their lives. Whether this be parents who work away, grandparents who live far away or our Armed forces, Read me a Story has something for everyone”. “We have seen other mobile apps launched that allow something similar, but that require both the reader and child to be there at the same time, as it is all in real-time. Our service records the reader, so it can be viewed over and over again. A recording that can be kept as a keepsake.” Increasing the number of children who have a bedtime story read to them is just as important now as it was 10, 20 years ago. It’s just the way in which the story is read that has changed. Read me a Story is launching initially to groups such as the armed forces to gain feedback before a full launch. They are starting with an offer to let users decide how much to pay to send a story – we welcome all feedback, so visit www. readmeastory.co.uk for further information. people and families with being physically active in a fun and enjoyable way. “We know from our own Class of 2035 report and working closely with schools that integrating digital technology into PE lessons and other subjects, can increase participation and enjoyment and empowers young people to take responsibility for their own activity levels. “If technology can be used to support young people and families to become more active, whilst educating them about healthy lifestyles, we’ll have a nation of fitter, happier people.”

Image recognition on smart phones will make family day trips, visits to the park or even the walk to school more stimulating by allowing children to point the camera at landmarks, cars, plants or animals and quickly discover all about them.
