Decorate your own Cupcake at Monkton Elm in aid of dementia Monkton Elm Garden & Pet Centre is hosting a Cupcake Day on June 15 to raise money for Alzheimer’s Society. Andrew Pitman, store manager of the award-winning, independent, family-run garden centre at Monkton Heathfield near Taunton, said: “We will be giving children the chance to decorate their own cupcakes. They will be able to decorate the already-baked cupcakes with their own colour choice of icing and sprinkles. The children can then take their cupcakes home or eat them in our restaurant. This is a great way to raise money for a worthy cause whilst having fun at the same time!” Cupcake decorating will cost £1 per cupcake and will run from 14:30-16:30. All materials will be provided by the garden centre. No booking is necessary. Andrew added: “If you’re not feeling too artistic on the day, then why not head over to the restaurant where you will find a selection of delightful cupcakes already decorated for you by

brain function. These conditions are all usually progressive and eventually severe. Every last crumb raised on Cupcake Day will go towards finding a cure and changing the lives of people affected by dementia. We hope to see you there!
Online searches for ‘staycation’ options have increased by almost a quarter so far in 2017. In response, Europcar UK, a subsidiary of Europcar Group, the European leader in vehicle rental services and a major player in mobility markets, is helping holidaymakers make the most of their trip by offering up to 25% off car hire in the UK this summer. Gary Smith, Managing Director of Europcar UK Group said, “Choosing to holiday in the UK is fast becoming a preferred choice for families looking to get away this summer and we can certainly see why – it’s as simple as booking accommodation and heading off in the car. There’s no jetlag, no airport queues or currency issues. “With cities bursting to the brim with history and culture, as well as spectacular coastal destinations, it’s easy to see why more and more families opt to
take their summer holiday on British soil. Whether heading to London or Loch Lomond, Europcar UK has the vehicle to suit the needs of our customers, that’s fit for purpose and has plenty of space for the whole family and luggage too! What’s more, with 25% off UK car hire this summer, that’s all the more cash to spend on experiences and creating memories to last a lifetime.” Europcar UK has over 250 locations across the UK and the widest choice of vehicles.

Fun times ahead at Puxton Park For a child, summertime fun in the sun begins with the doors of the classroom being thrown open for the last time. Kids, exhausted from SATS, in sticky uniforms tear off their jumpers and run outside, blinking in the sunlight. It is time to throw away old homework and to forget about anything to do with school - for six weeks at least. Summer time is a time of simple pleasures. Of late night sleepovers with best friends, not having to worry about homework, a marathon of cartoons and of course, room to run, play, dance and explore outside.
6 Parent Talk June 2017
Puxton Park understands that sometimes the simple things are the best. That’s why we’ve got arts and crafts on every Monday, dancing with
Disco Queen every Tuesday, magic and music with Disco Steve every Wednesday, the brilliantly funny Nutty Noah on every Thursday and Animal Antics with our growing farm of animals every Friday. Then there’s our daily activities; squirting bumper boats, wonderful water walkers, animal talks and petting times, the fantastic Puxton Railway and miniature train, our famous owl encounter and falconry shows, mini-golf, sandpits, ride on tractors and huge adventure play area. There are trampolines, forts, rowing boats and bumper cars. There is fun to be had around every corner, and there’s a whole summer-time stretching out in front of you to enjoy it.

3 June 1967 Arthur Ransome dies Arthur Michell Ransome was born in Leeds in 1884 and educated in Windermere and Rugby School. His family spent their summers at Nibthwaite, to the south of Coniston Water*. In 1902, Ransome abandoned a chemistry degree to become a publisher’s office boy in London. He used this precarious existence to practise writing, producing several minor works before Bohemia in London (1907), a study of London’s artistic scene and his first significant book. An interest in folklore, together with a desire to escape an unhappy first marriage, led Ransome to St Petersburg, where he was ideally placed to observe and report on the Russian Revolution. He knew many of the leading Bolsheviks*, including Lenin, Radek, Trotsky and the latter’s secretary, Evgenia Shvelpina. These contacts led to persistent but unproven accusations that he “spied” for both the Bolsheviks and Britain.
Ransome married Evgenia and returned to England in 1924. Settling in the Lake District, he spent the late 1920s as a foreign correspondent and highlyrespected angling columnist for the Manchester Guardian, before settling down to write Swallows and Amazons and its successors. Today Ransome is best known for his Swallows and Amazons series of novels, (1931 – 1947). All remain in print and have been widely translated. Arthur Ransome died in June 1967 and is buried at Rusland in the Lake District. * Bolshevik - member of a wing of the Russian SocialDemocratic Workers' Party, which seized control of the government in Russia (October 1917) and became the dominant political power. * Coniston Water is in the Lake District

A Father means so many things... An understanding heart, A source of strength and support right from the very start. A constant readiness to help In a kind and thoughtful way. With encouragement and forgiveness, No matter what comes your way. A special generosity and always affection, too. A father means so many things when he's a man like you....
Author: Unknown "Walk a little slower, Daddy," said a child so small. "I'm following in your footsteps and I don't want to fall. Sometimes your steps are very fast, Sometimes they're hard to see; So walk a little slower, Daddy, For you are leading me. Someday when I'm all grown up, You're what I want to be; Then I will have a little child Who'll want to follow me. And I would want to lead just right, And know that I was true; So, walk a little slower, Daddy, For I must follow you."

Taunton Preparatory School is thrilled to have been described by a top UK school guide as a 'terrific all-rounder' The independent school, which has 500 pupils in its Nursery, Pre-Prep and Prep School, was also praised for having ‘wonderfully welcoming’ staff, amazing facilities and excellent pastoral support. The school, on Staplegrove Road, Taunton, was recently reviewed by the independent The Good Schools Guide – the number one trusted guide to schools in the UK aimed at helping parents in every aspect of choosing the best education for their children. “This is a school for every child, a place where values of humanity come first, where happy children find out who they are and what they can do and then go on and play out of their socks,” the review panel commented. It continues: “You quickly pick up on the social atmosphere here because everyone is so naturally nice and courteous, welcoming of strangers, and that’s not something you find everywhere by any means.” The review also praised teaching at the school stating: “Academically a very safe pair of hands across the board just the right blend of extramile dedication and judicious professionalism.” Maths, DT, and the performing arts centre were singled out for acclaim
alongside the benefits of sharing some teachers and facilities with the senior school. The review also praised the boarding provision at the school. “The accommodation is clean and snug” it states. “There’s access to senior school facilities. The staff are brilliant, that’s key, and the children are clearly well
looked after and happy.” It went on to describe the school as popular with hardworking local entrepreneurs and business people wanting the best for their children and for whom this is their first experience of private education. “They told us that the school didn’t talk down to them like others they looked round, it’s not ‘grand and intimidating’” the review states. It’s also attractive to parents for whom private education is second nature and has long been popular with Forces families. The review further included comments from parents: "They spot talents you never knew they had", and the nursery and pre-prep was described by
another parent as "the jewel in the crown". Headmaster Duncan Sinclair said: “We are thrilled to get such a glowing review from the expert panel at the Good Schools Guide who look at hundreds of schools up and down the country”. To read the full review visit www. tauntonschool.co.uk/gsgprep

Enriching young lives Our aim at Queen’s College Pre-Prep is to educate in its widest sense. We are passionate about enriching our pupils’ lives, by teaching, encouraging and developing skills which are essential for life. The concept of lifelong learning is promoted through our daily activities, reinforcing the fact that children and adults can learn new things every day. Our focus ensures learning is a rewarding and enjoyable experience for everyone involved. The development of concentration, self-awareness and resilience is key and we introduce strategies for children to support them when they feel challenged. Strategies such as mindfulness can help children cope in their future lives with things like exam stress or challenging situations they might encounter.
Forest School and outdoor learning is an important part of Pre-Prep life. Children are stimulated through exploring the outdoors, including practical hands-on learning activities. Over time they experience an increase in self-belief, confidence, learning capacity, enthusiasm, communication and problem-solving skills as well as emotional well-being. Visiting speakers feature regularly in our curriculum and also enrich and add a new dynamic to our pupils' learning experience. Welcoming other voices into the classroom provides our pupils with access to different perspectives, adds variety to the classroom routine and demonstrates that learning is a collaborative process. Visits from the Somerset Museum Service, help to bring history alive for the children by involving them in role play and providing opportunities for

How to build your Enjoying reading puts children child's financial more than three years ahead in future Tips to give your child a head start on savings 1. Children’s savings accounts just got a bit easier There was a big change for savings accounts last year which means that tax is no longer deducted before the interest is paid into people’s accounts. That applies to children’s savings accounts too, so parents no longer need to sign form R85 to make sure interest earned is tax free. But watch out for the potential banana skin, as it doesn’t mean that all interest is going to be tax free. If the money you pay into your child’s savings account as a parent results in more than £100 of interest in a tax year, you will be liable for the tax on all the interest that is above your own “Personal Savings Allowance”, which is currently £1,000 for a basic rate tax payer and £500 for a higher rate tax payer. It does mean that bank and building society accounts can be most useful for regular savings of smaller amounts of money, or where money comes from a variety of sources, as the £100 limit doesn’t apply to money given by grandparents, relatives or friends. 2. Consider a Junior ISA You can save up to £4,128 for each of your children in to a Junior ISA this tax year, and there are two types to choose from – a cash junior ISA and a stocks and shares Junior ISA. Your child will need to be under 18 and will have full access to the money in the Junior ISA once they reach the age of 18. Junior ISAs replaced Child Trust Funds and it is now possible to transfer existing Child Trust Fund Accounts into a Junior ISA. 3. Use your ISA allowance If you’re concerned about handing over control of a large sum of money to your child at the age of 18, you might decide to save into your own ISA, rather than, or as well as, a Junior ISA, so all the money doesn’t automatically transfer over to them. You can save up to £20,000 into an ISA each year, and it’s up to you how much of that is in stocks and shares or cash, or a bit of both. Unlike a Child Trust Fund and Junior ISA, you can take money out of your ISA whenever you want to – although some ISAs may have penalties for early withdrawals, so check the rules of the account. So it can help you to save and plan for many things in life, like school fees, university fees, or even help towards getting your child on the property ladder by paying a deposit or contributing towards the set-up of a Lifetime ISA in 14 Parent Talk June 2017
your child’s name once they reach the age of 18. Lifetime ISA savings will receive a top up of £1 for every £4 saved. Your child can’t take money out penalty free and tax free until they reach the age of 60. But they can enjoy penalty free access earlier if they are using the amount saved towards a deposit on their first home. 4. Start a pension for your child If you want your child to be set up for life, then how about saving into a pension for them? Investing a little in a pension from a young age can make a big difference later on, helping them to benefit from the compounding of any potential investment growth. You child will also receive tax relief on the contributions, even though they don’t earn an income. You can help start this when they are any age and they can’t access the funds until they are into their 50s. Starting a pension for a child suits those who are prepared to take a very long term approach to their loved one’s finances - they could also benefit from many years of the compounding of any potential investment growth. The annual limit which applies for this type of pension saving is £3,600 and works in a special way. If you pay in £2,880, it is topped-up with tax relief by the Government, and becomes £3,600. But your child won’t have access to it until they reach the age of 55 or later – so again, this won’t suit everyone. 5. Set up a trust This one’s more relevant for grandparents. Sometimes, it’s helpful to give away a pot of money now, but in a way which allows you to retain some control over who gets what, and when – for instance if you don’t want your grandchildren to access their money until a certain age. This is called a ‘trust’. The money is controlled by trustees who manage the investments. There are different types of trust, which can be matched to your specific aims and objectives.. The tax issues are complex so you should consider whether taking expert advice to stay on track here, particularly when it comes to inheritance tax. The value of investments like ISAs, JISAs and pensions can go up or down and may be worth less than what was paid in. Laws and tax rules may change in the future, and the information here is based on our understanding in May 2017. Your personal circumstances also have an impact on tax treatment. Tips provided by Standard Life
the classroom
New research published by the National Literacy Trust reveals that three-quarters of primary school children enjoy reading – the highest levels ever recorded by the charity. The research also highlights the link between enjoyment of reading and attainment, showing that the longer children keep an enjoyment of reading going, the greater the benefits are in the classroom: 10-year-olds who enjoy reading have a reading age 1.3 years higher than their peers who don’t enjoy reading, rising to 2.1 years for 12-year-olds and 3.3 years for 14-year-olds. The research launch marks the 20th anniversary of the National Literacy Trust’s Young Readers Programme – the firstever national school based reading for enjoyment initiative. To celebrate, the charity has published a top tips guide for parents to help get their child excited about reading, alongside a brand new book list to inspire children to get reading, which celebrates the most popular books chosen every year of the last two decades by the children who have taken part in the Young
Readers Programme. Jonathan Douglas, Director of the National Literacy Trust, said: “20 years after we launched our Young Readers Programme – the first national reading for enjoyment initiative of its kind – we are thrilled that our research has found children’s enjoyment of reading to be at an all-time high. When children enjoy reading and have books of their own, they do better at school and later in life, so we must continue to do everything we can to inspire children to fall in love with reading for a lifetime. Parents play a vital role when it comes to helping their child develop and sustain a love of reading, which is why we’ve published our top tips to help parents encourage their child to read and a book list with some inspirational children’s titles!” Top tips for parents: ● Make time to read: read a bedtime story with your child every night or set a regular time to read together during the day. Little and often works best: a good ten minutes reading together is better than a difficult half hour! ● Let your child choose what
Year 3 pupils from Crampton Primary School in South East London celebrate 20 years of the Young Readers Programme
to read: your child is more likely to develop a love of reading if they are able to choose the books they read with you. Join your local library for free and your child can pick from a wide selection of books that suit their interests or play to their hobbies, such as football or animals. ● Explore different reading materials and formats: as well as fiction there is a world of comics, magazines, ebooks, read-along audio books and non-fiction to discover. ● Get the whole family involved: encourage your child to read with other family members like grandparents, brothers and
Parents can also use the National Literacy Trust’s brand new book list, 20 Years of Children’s Choices, (below) to help inspire their child to read. sisters, and aunts and uncles. ● Bring stories to life: when reading stories out loud with your child, give characters different voices that match their personalities. You could pause the story and ask your child what happens next, or even try acting out parts of the story together. ● Create fun reading challenges at home: on a rainy day you could organise a treasure hunt around the house; give your child a list of things to find and see how quickly they can read the list and collect all the items. ● Be positive: praise your child for trying hard at their reading and let them know it’s alright to make mistakes. ● Be a reading role model: your child learns from you, so seeing you enjoying and valuing books can be a great inspiration. Liz Pichon’s The Brilliant World of Tom Gates was chosen as the most inspirational children’s read of 2011. The awardwinning author and illustrator has supported the Young Readers Programme for many years, delivering storytelling sessions in numerous primary schools. Liz Pichon said: “I have so enjoyed being part of such a great programme. I honestly think I have the BEST job in the world, so finding out that The Brilliant World of Tom Gates was chosen by the children as a book that inspired them to read was just - BRILLIANT. I'm often contacted by parents who tell me how their kids were reluctant readers and how seeing them with their noses in a book – sometimes for the first time – makes them both happy. Wellington School Nursery is very excited to announce that it is planning to extend its Early Years Entitlement offer to 30 hours per week from September 2017 for those families who are eligible. We already offer 15 hours entitlement to all parents of 3 and 4 year olds and we are finalising arrangements to offer the new 30 hours of provision. In September we opened The Chapel Nursery, our fantastic new unit for two and three year olds, which has proved to be very popular with many sessions already being full. With our plans to increase our offer to parents of 30 hours per week, we are sure that our remaining places for September 2017 in The Chapel Nursery and Price's Nursery will be snapped up very quickly, especially as families are overwhelmingly keen on our ‘Learning for Life’ enhancement package. ‘Learning for Life’ is our School motto and this is as important in the Early Years as it is in the Sixth form as our oldest pupils prepare to move on to some of the world’s most prestigious universities. In our Nursery the ‘Learning for Life’ package typically
includes our Balanceability cycling programme, Forest School, our programme of trips and visits, Music lessons with a qualified teacher, Computing lessons with a qualified teacher, freshly cooked and prepared meals and snacks throughout the day, our “Ten Gems” gross motor skills development programme, access to the wider school facilities and the benefit of a qualified teacher in the setting. With this package of incredible additional opportunities being available
from less than 70 pence an hour (after the reduction of the Early Years funding), it is easy to see why Wellington School Nursery is so popular! If you would like to see the impact of ‘Learning for Life’ at Wellington School Nursery, please join us for our Open Morning on Saturday 10 June from 10.00am to 12 noon. We have a limited number of spaces for two, three and four year olds from September 2017 and we are taking registrations now.
If you would like to join us on the Open Morning or come and have a look at our fantastic facilities at any other time, please contact Rachel Debenham via admissions@wellington-school.org.uk or 01823 668803

Four million motivated Brits get set for Healthy Eating Week 2017 Healthy Eating Week is back, and it is bigger than ever. More than 7,900 nurseries and schools have already registered to take part, representing over 3.7 million children. Organised by the British Nutrition Foundation (BNF), the fifth annual Healthy Eating Week will take place from 12 – 16 June 2017. In addition to the schools and nurseries registered for the event, this is the first year that universities and colleges have been invited to get involved. Over 110 universities and colleges and over 140 workplaces will be participating from across 16 Parent Talk June 2017
England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland – involving 484,186 adults in the activities. Roy Ballam, Managing
Director and Head of Education at the BNF, said: “Each year Healthy Eating Week continues to grow. With the importance
of a good diet and regular physical activity increasingly prominent, adults and children alike are keen to increase their knowledge on how to achieve a healthier lifestyle. “Over 4 million people are set to participate in Healthy Eating Week 2017, and with one weekleft to go we expect even more schools, colleges, universities and businesses to get involved. Registration is free for all, and participants will benefit from a variety of resources – all designed to boost the nation’s understanding of healthy eating.” The theme for Healthy Eating
Week this year is ‘applied learning’. The idea is to encourage school children to take ownership of their own health by becoming their school’s ‘Ambassadors’ for the week – flying the healthy eating flag and motivating their peers. Schools can download Ambassador Packs, to encourage applications for the Ambassador roles. To support the week of activities, all participants will also receive a board game, posters, and activity ideas, and a series of daily challenges. This year’s challenges include: Have breakfast, 5 A DAY, drink plenty, get active and try something new. There will also be health webinars and online
cooking activities. Findings from a new research study, one of the largest surveys of its kind, conducted among 4,000 UK children (aged five – 16) will be released on Monday 13 June to coincide with the week. The research will provide an insight into children’s knowledge about healthy eating and the origins of food, as well as their eating habits and physical activity levels at different ages. EDUCATION, INFORMATION
A new adventure begins at King's Hall School Starting school is perhaps one of the most emotional journeys you and your child will go through during their formative years. You will all be likely to be very excited about this next step in your child’s learning journey, yet also anxious. There will be endless questions... will they cope? Will they make friends? At King’s Hall Pre-Prep (for children aged 2-7) we understand this combination of excitement and anxiety. We draw on our vast experience to make the transition from home to nursery or school as smooth as possible. Ultimately, we want the very first day to be the start of a new adventure; each child has a blank map ready to start filling in as they begin their voyage. Unique and successful journeys are achieved through forming close partnerships between staff and parents who can work together to help guide and steer children’s paths, if needs be. This relationship begins the minute you register with us so that by the time the big day comes, we have a shared understanding of what is best for your child. Overall, we want the adventure at school to be enjoyable; we know that everything else will usually fall into place! We would be delighted to meet you and your child to show you all that we can offer.
