Hestercombe Centre for Young Musicians Would your child like to study music in the magnificent surroundings of Hestercombe House and Gardens near Taunton?
In a ground breaking initiative launched this academic year, the Guildhall School has forged a relationship with the Sound Foundation Somerset Music Education HUB and the Hestercombe Trust offering progression routes in instrumental study and in singing. The Hestercombe Centre for Young Musicians (HCYM), which opened on 1st March
2014, now welcomes applications from committed young musicians aged 6-18 to attend on Saturdays between 9.30am and 2.00pm in a sustained programme of weekly training comprising instrumental lessons, ensemble work, singing, performance skills and musicianship classes. A high quality team of teachers has been appointed to deliver the curriculum in most orchestral instruments, singing, piano and guitar. Visiting artists will also enrich the provision in a series of workshops. Fees of £270 per term
should not put anyone off making an application. The Sound Foundation Music HUB has generously ensured that no child should be denied access to the Centre on financial grounds. Bursaries will be available for families who satisfy strict criteria. The CYM in London www.cym.
org.uk was founded in 1970 and is thriving. We now wish to offer children in Somerset the same opportunities we provide in London. Please contact Tom Yardley (Head of Centre) for an application form and further details if required via email: tomas.yardley@cym.org.uk

Just Dance Learning through fun on the farm at Torridge House Cottages Wincanton Have fun in a stimulating environment where the targets of the Early Years Foundation Stage are explored with relaxed ease.
In a green, garden and field setting with spectacularly clean air and a myriad of things to wonder over, parents can enjoy their children’s excitement in taking part in the interactive programme that comfortably covers the 7 areas of Foundation Stage learning. Torridge House Cottages have made the most of their in-house Foundation Stage teacher and 26 years of experience of offering childorientated involvement with young animals and the natural world. The dedicated “farmers” lead families and their children
through daily feeding sessions introducing children to a world of animals where pens are colour coded, listening and speaking have immediate rewards, where there are wide open spaces to run around and the need to be outside in all weathers. It’s also where sharing, waiting and empathy are part and parcel of every aspect of feeding time and marking on eggs just collected and recording that jobs have been done. Numbers and problem solving opportunities are everywhere, with ordering buckets and toys cars, as well as fun counting the baby mice on the table or the eggs in the basket. There are ditties to chant to the hens, word play with Piggy Pudding, Rabbit Room and cheeky chickens,
all enjoyed in the company of peers, grown-ups, farmers, rabbits, chicks, pony and pigs. See www.torridgehouse.co.uk

Gardening in decline despite being best childhood memory Just Dance are running some great activities through August. Children will have a chance to sew, dance, join the vege patch club, cooking and much more!
Activities run Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday throughout August. Children can be dropped off at 9.00 and picked up at 4.00 (or later if by prior arrangement). Children need to bring their own lunch, but snacks and drinks are provided during the day. Activities will vary daily. As we have a dance studio, there will definitely be dancing. We have a fully fitted kitchen, where the children can try their hand at baking and cooking their own lunch.
At the back of the building, we are very lucky to have a large garden, where children can play, sit quietly and where we have also created a vegetable patch. Children that came to our Easter activities, planted seeds in pots, which are now ready to be planted outside. Children will be able to take home (when it’s ready) any vegetables that are grown in the garden. If the weather is rotten, why not come and enjoy a coffee and cake, while the children play in a safe and friendly environment. If the weather is warm, then come and sit in our quiet, secluded garden and let the children burn off some energy!

New research by leading retailer QVC, one of the nation’s largest multi-platform retailers, reveals gardening is British adults’ number one childhood memory, beating breaking up for the summer holidays and learning how to ride a bike. The reasons for this included the chance to spend quality time with parents, being outdoors, getting muddy and being creative. Top Childhood Memories: 1. Gardening 2. Going to the seaside 3. leading to misunderstandings, with children struggling to identify dandelions, pansies and tulips. Almost half of children surveyed didn’t know radishes could be grown in the back garden, while some thought chocolate came from UK soil. Additionally, one in five of children believe flowers are made by people, while one in ten think flowers are made in supermarkets. Adults didn’t do much better with one in 10 unable to identify a conker and over a third mystified when challenged to spot the Great British oak tree. The findings demonstrate how gardening is in decline, with one in five parents admitting they haven’t been near a plant pot since they were a child. As people age, a third of Brits admitted to going off gardening, with almost a

the pleasure of nurturing growing things and the companionship of gardening together. This research shows us almost a quarter of adults loved watching flowers and vegetables grow when they were children – yet they seem to forget what a great experience it can be as they get older. “Children inhabit a fastmoving, screen-based world and the slow, natural outdoor joys of gardening are a good counter balance. Plus it’s a great way to stimulate a child intellectually and teach where food comes from!” In response to the findings, QVC together with its garden expert Richard Jackson, are launching a campaign called “Watch Them Grow” in a bid to get parents and grandparents to spend more quality time outdoors with children, passing on the joys of homegrown produce and flowers.

Furthermore, two in three adults admit they find excuses not to garden with their children despite half of this number acknowledging it’s important for their offspring to know where fruit and vegetables come from, and one-fifth thinking it’s important they spend time outside. When asked why gardening with kids was not a priority, the top reasons included; parents just aren’t interested, a lack of time, adults no longer know how to garden and a lack of space. Dr Pat Spungin, Child Psychologist comments: “When a child plants something and it grows, it can be a really magical and emotional experience. Private Walking and talking autism Fostering Week A volunteering project offering support to families of young children with autistic spectrum disorders
Private Fostering Week is 7-11 July and we are raising awareness to make sure all children in Somerset are safe and families involved in a private fostering arrangement are supported.
Many people look after other people’s children for a night or a weekend. But if a child is living with someone – who is not an immediate relative – for more than 28 days, they may be classed as being privately fostered. As a local authority, we have a duty to make sure all children in Somerset are safe, and we therefore
need to know if a child is being privately fostered. We also have a dedicated Private Fostering team, which provides practical and emotional support to the private foster carer and the parents to help rebuild relationships. Children become privately fostered for many reasons, for example if their parents are ill and unable to look after them, if they have fallen out with their parents and are living with someone else or if their parents are working away from home and they are staying with a friend or neighbour.
If your child is being privately fostered or you know of an arrangement like this, please let us know. You can email privatefostering@somerset.gov.uk phone 01823 357840 or visit www.fosteringinsomerset.org.uk/private-fostering
Acclaimed autism practitioner, Gina Davies, will be walking the walk and talking the talk as she travels on foot from Wells to Canterbury, and along the route will volunteer her services to families of young children with autistic spectrum disorders. Starting
out in Somerset on the 21st July (Wells, 22nd July Glastonbury, 23rd July Castle Cary), Gina will walk old
pilgrim routes and footpaths and offer free consultations to parents and families in exchange for a meal or packed lunch, concluding her journey in Kent on the 14th of August. Gina is a qualified Speech and Language Therapist who turned her passion for communication development into practical and joyful intervention strategies for parents and professionals dealing with autism. She has worked with hundreds of autistic children in schools, nurseries and residential settings, and directly with
parents, carers and families. “For most people the summer holidays mean more down time, and for people who work in schools it means time away from the classrooms, time to relax and enjoy the break,” says Gina. “For families with young children on the autistic spectrum the long summer holiday period can feel daunting and exhausting and support can be harder to access because other people are often away themselves. “I hope that by offering direct support to families in their homes along the route, my little bit of volunteering might go some way to help. The consultations can only be one-offs but offer the chance to think through practical daily challenges of things like sleeping, eating, behaviour, and a host of practical strategies for getting by. I am also more than happy to offer talks to groups of parents and carers if this is of use and on the understanding that they would not be charged for them.” The concept of walk the walk and talk the talk arose out of several recent experiences by
Gina: Walking the pilgrimage route to Camino de Santiago de Compostela; her reading of the book, ‘Walking Home’, by Simon Armitage, where poetry readings were exchanged for overnight accommodation; and a talk given by adventurer Dave Cornthwaite who urged the audience to try an adventure every day and, ‘say yes more’ to ideas about doing things differently. Gina’s route from Wells will take her to Glastonbury, then Salisbury (following the Monarchs Way), Winchester (following The Clarendon Way) Eastbourne (following the South Downs Way), Hastings, Rye, Lympne and finally Canturbury via the North Downs way route. Along the way she will be staying at local B&Bs and hostels. The volunteering is not designed to take the place of existing services, but rather the offer of experience gained over the years to families who might like to try. The project is not designed to be a marketing strategy, nor a fund raising
event, and no sponsorship is involved. It is just a small try at getting out there to share skills. If you are interested in this project and would like to find out more or book an appointment please get in touch by email for more details of the route and dates.

Book Bag NEWS This official 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil poster was announced on the 31st of January 2013 by the World Cup ambassadors. It has been designed by Brazilian agency Crama. The poster was chosen over two others by a judging panel consisting of Brazilian Minister of Culture Marta Suplicy, FIFA Secretary General Jérôme Valcke, LOC (Local Organizer Committee) President Jose Maria Marin, Brazilian artist Romero Britto and legendary football players Ronaldo and Bebeto. Karen Haidinger is the creator of the artwork. She wanted to show the beauty and diversity of Brazil by using vibrant, emotional and strong exotic colors and shapes. The bright colourful shapes and patterns illustrate Brazil’s culture, flora and fauna characteristics. If you look closely, you see exotic objects such as a butterfly and the sun. The shapes such as the two legs are formed in such a way that the country Brazil is visible by its form.

Summer news Taunton The start of our term was hectic and we are now well under way with our own devised version of ALICE which will be produced for PAA Exams and for our end of term production for family and friends.
All the students are devising their own versions of ALICE and Alice certainly enters Wonderland in quite a few different ways. She obviously falls down a rabbit hole but she also gets into wonderland on a ghost train ride and in through the doors of a nightclub...
As ever with our wonderful dance teacher, movement is very interesting in this piece and the singing is sublime with lots of harmonies. Our Early stages are very busy planning a Summer Time end of term presentation for family and friends. We are so lucky to have the wonderful venue of Bishop Foxes to work in and the students love the drama studio, dance studio and theatre. If you would like to come and try out for our autumn term do call Sue on

Available to use on any web browser including smartphones, PTAsocial is designed for parents, teachers and PTA committee members, who are all able to share information about school events, volunteering opportunities and up-to-date news. Many schools have overstretched PTA
committees who have a large amount of work designated to a small number of people, making organising fundraising events time-consuming when farming tasks to each parent using email or paper. PTAsocial reduces these problems by offering a simple alternative for organising and managing PTA events, while creating a secure social network for parents to connect with other parents in their school. PTAsocial has been created to benefit schools by building stronger parent communities, changing the culture of volunteering and getting more
parents engaged in school life. By providing their PTA with this tool, schools not only save on admin costs, but furthermore they benefit from increased engagement and more funds to spend on school facilities and equipment. PTA organisers can use the app to publish detailed task lists, then send a message to the whole school to appeal for volunteers. Parents simply click and browse to choose exactly how they will help, and just tick a box to volunteer. Organisers can also assign helpers to tasks via PTAsocial, and the app notifies them
automatically by email. They can easily message all the relevant helpers for any specific task and have a twoway conversation on the task “message wall”. Members can instantly see what tasks others are doing, and offer help where it is needed. Parents with busy schedules, but who are still keen to get involved, can contribute their time and skills whenever possible. Increasing transparency and removing barriers to volunteering means more parents are stepping forward, with some PTAs using PTAsocial now

New social networking app for parents leads to boom in engagement within schools A parent and teacher networking service, named PTAsocial, has been launched to schools and already has 200 school committees signed up across the UK and US.
LITTLE WELLIES Term
reporting 100% of tasks being taken up at large events like their Christmas Fairs last year. Tes Macpherson, creator of PTAsocial, said: “PTAs raise vital funds for schools but many parents feel like they cannot help as it is too timedemanding. PTAsocial makes life easier for committee members, because it enables more parents to get involved in school life without having to give up too much of their time. It’s designed to appeal to parents, and caters directly to their needs.” Macpherson continues:
“Schools are increasingly recognising the value of a strong parent teacher association in terms of the overall impact on the school’s desirability and even pupil attainment. Current tools provided by schools are largely inadequate, and many PTAs have turned to well known social media platforms, raising concerns over e-safety. PTAsocial not only connects parents and teachers while protecting their privacy, but also handles the organisational aspect of fundraising activities, saving time and increasing participation.” Tes Macpherson has also recently been accepted onto the Google Campus for Mums programme, a unique community of 35 parent entrepreneurs.

Relate, the UK’s leading relationship support organisation, is offering advice for families who are separated or divorced this Father’s Day.
The charity, which is running a separation awareness campaign called Being Parents Apart, recognises that this can be a tough time of year, especially if dads are not spending Father’s Day with the kids. Relate family counsellor Lin Griffiths said: “Father’s Day can be a lovely time of year for many families. But like all festive occasions, it can be a really difficult day for dads who are going through a tough time. It’s especially hard when it’s your first Father’s Day since going through separation.” With 58% of separated parents surveyed saying they don’t believe in a good separation, Lin is offering some tips to help separated parents manage Father’s Day. Lin’s top tips for dads: ● Be honest. If you can, try to
be honest with your ex partner about what you’d like to do on Father’s Day. If you want to change arrangements so that you have the children when you wouldn’t usually, make sure you talk openly to your ex and give plenty of notice. ● Think about other Father’s Days you have had. There may be a chance to do things in the same way or to make them very different, so talk to the kids and see what they think too. ● Remember it’s just one day. This is important, especially if you’ve recently separated. Your children might feel a bit strange as to how to approach Father’s Day, so try not to put
too much pressure on it. Plan something for yourself. Regardless of whether you have the kids or not, plan a little treat for yourself on or around Father’s Day – just going for a drink with a friend can give you a lift. Lin’s top tips for mums: ● Give a little. If you can, try
to talk to your ex partner about what he’d like to do on Father’s Day. Try to be flexible where you can on who has the children that day – a little gesture like swapping your days can go a long way. ● Help the kids out. Even if your relationship with your ex is difficult, he will always be your kids’ dad, and it can really help children to know that you understand their relationship with both parents is important. Help them write cards or buy presents if possible. ● Plan something for yourself. It can be tough to imagine the children having a special time with your ex, especially if the break up is recent. Instead of dwelling on that, have something in mind to look forward to yourself. Relate offers information, advice and counselling for all stages of your relationships, including helping people to handle separation. Our Being Parents Apart campaign offers guidance and support to families across the country, helping to make sure that children and young people cope with any heartache and changes in the best way possible. Relate’s What Next? service offers practical, online advice to help parents navigate separation and reduce the impact of separation on their children.
