Dear All... King’s Hall School is quite simply a wonderful place to grow up. We have an area devoted entirely to our youngest members of the school – from 2 years old up to 7. Nursery and PrePrep is perfectly situated to enjoy all of the school’s superb facilities whilst also ensuring that the children’s immediate surroundings are entirely age-appropriate. Our Pelican Nursery has two rooms; one just for 2 year olds and another for 3 – 4 year olds, both have undergone recent wonderful refurbishment to guarantee the finest and most suitable environment for the children and staff. Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 then have their own ‘logcabin’ classrooms with teachers and teaching assistants catering especially for their needs. All of this is mere centimetres away from ‘Little Woods’, our beautiful woodland for Nursery and Reception Forest School sessions – but there’s even more! Our unrivalled ‘Big Woods’ can be found at the end of a leafy path just a hundred metres further and is loved by Years 1 and 2 for their outdoor explorations and discoveries – there is even a roundhouse if the weather gets just a bit too wet! The School recognises the needs of children and parents and is currently running a successful series of talks for parents of children aged 0 – 5 years. Our next talk is ‘Managing your Child’s Feelings and Frustrations’ on Thursday 22nd September.
Welcome back after the Summer break and following last year’s washout, I write ‘Summer’ with a flourish as life with kids at home is just so much easier when the sun shines! I suppose I should say I hope you all had a well deserved break but we all know that having them at home for an extended period can drain the most saintly of parents! Back home, cries of "I’m bored" soon ceased as I offered entertainment in the form of weeding, hanging out washing, sorting washing and any other household chores I could dream up! So they’re now back at school and ready to grow into their new uniforms. It’s the usual conundrum of buying clothes that are a perfect fit now versus the next size up. We’ve gone for the latter which means our 11 year old should fit her uniform perfectly by the time she takes GCSEs! Good luck with the start of term. You’ll see there are plenty of clubs on offer to keep everyone busy and when they’re ready for some down time, we have a great selection of books to think about. Best wishes Tamsin

Five lessons parents must learn Millfield Pre-Prep - a happy about back to school eye tests and vibrant school where It’s back to school time. A new uniform is hanging in the wardrobe. New school supplies have been purchased, and a haircut booked.
Here, Noelle Hamilton, senior optometrist at Optical Express, gives five reasons why your child needs a back to school eye test: 1. Eyecare Trust reports 1 million children have an undiagnosed eye problem “Young children with poor vision may not realise they have a problem because they don’t know any different,” said Noelle. “A child with an undiagnosed vision problem may struggle to read and write or play sports. These difficulties could be devastating to a child and seriously reduce his or her quality of life. “Parents know whether their child can see or not but the only way to know how well they can see is to take them for an eye test.” According to research by the College of Optometrists a quarter of children have never had an eye test. 2. Eye conditions can be irreversible if not caught early enough One of the most common childhood eye problems is amblyopia – also known as lazy eye - which results in reduced vision in one eye. Treatment
usually includes glasses and covering the strong eye with patches to encourage use of the lazy eye. “Ideally, amblyopia should be treated when a child is aged between three and five years old,” said Noelle. “If left untreated, lazy eye can lead to a child’s stronger eye becoming dominant with the brain eventually ignoring images from the weaker eye, causing permanent vision loss.” 3. Short sightedness among young people has doubled over the last 50 years A recent study conducted by Ulster University found that one in five teenagers are now myopic (short-sighted), which causes distant objects to appear blurred. “There is increasing evidence that growing use of smart phones, computers and tablets is placing children’s eye sight under significant strain,” Noelle said. 4. Vision checks carried out in schools are not as comprehensive as eye exams While some nurseries and schools carry out vision screening they are no replacement for a full eye examination carried out by an optometrist, Noelle advised. “An eye exam checks the health of your child’s eyes and can detect a range of other health

conditions including diabetes and even brain tumours. “It also includes colour vision testing. There isn’t any cure for colour blindness, but if your child’s teacher is aware that he or she is colour blind, steps can be taken to combat any problems caused by the condition in the classroom. Colour blindness can also affect career choices, so it is highly important that it is identified.” 5.Children should have at least an annual eye test According to Noelle, going for an eye test should be like going to the dentist – an important part of your child’s regular health care. “Having an eye test won’t do any harm – but it could do a lot of good.”
At Millfield Pre-Prep we aim to inspire and engage each child to make the most of their talents and potential. Small class sizes, experienced teachers, a broad range of subjects and activities, along with inspirational indoor and outdoor spaces, enable us to achieve this. A thorough grounding in the basics of reading, writing and mathematics is combined with a dynamic topic based curriculum. Weekly lessons include French, swimming, PE, dance, music and cookery. Our on-site Forest School is a big part of our outdoor learning programme, where children have the opportunity to find out about living things and explore taking risks. The messy mud kitchen is a favourite attraction and baking rolls in the bread oven, learning to cook over an open fire, making dens and sawing wood all add to their skills and growing sense

The overall passion and desire to see children make the most of their potential motivates us in everything we do. Our aim is to see children find skills and interests they really love, giving them a confident platform for their whole learning experience.

CHILDREN from Somerset are being offered free advice and demonstrations by a garden centre in the county this month in a bid to get them in to gardening. Monkton Elm Garden & Pet Centre is keen to encourage children to plant their own bulbs at home for spring colour and expert staff will be on-hand to help.
Andrew Pitman, Store Manager at the award-winning garden centre at Monkton Heathfield near Taunton, said: “Autumn can be a quieter time in the garden so it is the perfect opportunity for families to start getting children interested in gardening. “We now have lots of winter and early spring flowering bulbs in stock and our staff will be on-hand to offer advice and tips and tricks for planting to any families or children who want to give growing a go. “Hyacinths, daffodils and crocus are extremely popular bulbs to start planting from September onwards and they’ll produce some fabulous colour.” Monkton Elm’s top tips for bulb planting at home are: 0 Designate an area in the garden for your bulbs. They prefer moisture retentive, well-
drained soil and can be planted in the ground or in hanging baskets and pots. 0 Plant your bulbs twice as deep as the bulb is tall. Plant with the pointy end facing upwards and leave a generous amount of space between each bulb. 0 If the bulbs are planted in hanging baskets or pots, give them a good drink of water after planting. 0 Once the bulbs begin to flower, apply a dressing of bulb fertiliser. Andrew added: “Youngsters are welcome to pop in at any time with their parents and we’ll be happy to talk them through the process and give them a free demonstration. “While they’re here their family can enjoy lunch or a snack in our Elm Tree restaurant and the kids can burn off some energy in our play area.”

All our junior classes teach children the basic skills of Taekwon-Do as well as balance, co-ordination and general fitness. These sessions will also build children’s concentration and self-esteem. The classes are fun, active, safe and provide excellent foundations for a Martial Arts career. Evolution Martial Arts ensures all their instructors are fully qualified Black Belt instructors and DBS checked. With our vast experience we have taught hundreds of children martial arts over the years. You can have confidence in the knowledge that we honestly believe martial arts will have a positive effect on their lives. They learn antibullying methods that can give
them the confidence to defend themselves and succeed in life. Your child is going to develop a full range of techniques through continual training. It’s these skills that will build co-ordination, balance and strength. Children are influenced by everything they see, hear and do. So why not surround them with positivity and the idea that hard work can be rewarding and fun? Because ultimately, this is what Evolution is all about. Boosting children's self-esteem with performing arts
It is a sad fact that performing arts is declining in England’s schools, despite the fact that the performing arts is widely spoken about as being one of the most positive influences on a child’s life. It is not only for those that want to go on and make a career
on the stage; performing arts stimulate all children’s creativity. This is where affordable, part-time theatre schools really help. Razzamataz Yeovil is part of a national chain of theatre schools that achieved national recognition after a successful

The Great Fire of London 350th Anniversary In the 17th Century, people were not as aware of the dangers of fire as they are today. Buildings were made of timber covered in pitch and tightly packed together. The design of buildings meant flames could easily spread from building to building. Following a long, dry summer the city was suffering a drought; water was scarce and the wooden houses had dried out, making them easier to burn. Londoners had originally not been alarmed by the blaze due to fires being a common occurrence at the time.
How did the Great Fire of London start? The Great Fire of London started on Sunday, 2 September 1666 in a baker's shop belonging to Thomas Farynor. Although he claimed to have extinguished the fire, three hours later, at 1am, his house was a blazing inferno. Farynor’s bakery was situated in Pudding Lane. The fire spread quickly down Pudding Lane and carried on down Fish Hill and towards the Thames. The fire continued to spread rapidly, helped by a strong wind from the east; when it reached the Thames it hit warehouses that were stocked with combustible products such as oil and tallow. Fortunately the fire couldn't spread south of the river because a previous blaze in 1633 had already destroyed a section of London Bridge. What happened? The Great Fire of London swept through the city in September 1666 devastating many buildings including 13,200 houses, 87 parish churches, The Royal Exchange, Guildhall and St. Paul’s Cathedral, built during the Middle Ages, was totally destroyed.
Although the verified death toll was only six people it is unknown how many people died in the great fire of London because many more died through indirect causes.
The Navy, which had been using gunpowder at the time, carried out the request; by the next morning - Thursday, 6 September 1666 - the fire has been successfully stopped.
In 1666 there was no organised fire brigade. Firefighting was very basic with little skill or knowledge involved. Leather buckets, axes and water squirts were used to fight the fire but had little effect.
Pepys recorded in his diary that even the King, Charles II, was seen helping to put out the fire.
Samuel Pepys, a diarist of the period and Clerk to the Royal Navy, observed the fire and recommended to the King that buildings were pulled-down, as it may be the only way to stop the fire. The Mayor was ordered to pull-down burning houses using fire hooks but the fire continued to spread. People forced to evacuate their homes chose to bury or hide what valuables they couldn't carry. Pepys buried his expensive cheese and wine. How did they put out the Great Fire of London? Pepys spoke to the Admiral of the Navy and agreed they should blow up houses in the path of the fire. The hope was that by doing this they would create a space to stop the fire spreading from house to house.
What happened next? London had to be almost totally reconstructed. Initially this meant temporary buildings were erected that were illequipped and enabled disease to spread easily. Many people died from this and the harsh winter that followed the fire. The cost of the fire was estimated to be £10 million - at a time when London’s annual income was only £12,000; many people were financially ruined and debtors' prisons became over-crowded. As a result, early fire brigades were formed by insurance companies as a way of recouping the costs of extinguishing fires. Sir Christopher Wren planned the new city and the rebuilding of London took over 30 years. The site where the fire first started is now marked by a 202-foot monument, which was built between 1671 and 1677.

A new adventure begins at King’s Hall School Starting school is perhaps one of the most emotional journeys you and your child will go through during their formative years. You will all be likely to be very excited about this next step in your child’s learning journey, yet also anxious. There will be endless questions... will they cope? Will they make friends? At King’s Hall Pre-Prep (for children aged 2-7) we understand this combination of excitement and anxiety. We draw on our vast experience to make the transition from home to nursery or school as smooth as possible. Ultimately, we want the very first day to be the start of a new adventure; each child has a blank map ready to start filling in as they begin their voyage. Unique and successful journeys are achieved through forming close partnerships between staff and parents who can work together to help guide and steer children’s paths, if needs be. This relationship begins the minute you register

Home from home at Perrott Hill At Perrott Hill boarding is a popular part of school life. While it can be initially daunting for both children and parents, boarding offers many benefits. These include the opportunity to be independent, build close relationships with fellow pupils and learn essential life skills from organisation to teamwork. Our experienced boarding team recommend arranging taster stays and familiarisation visits as a brilliant way for children to get used to boarding routines. Communication is key - from knowing when and the best way to contact your children and teachers to logistics like arranging exeat weekend travel arrangements and birthday cakes. It is often the thoughtful gestures and caring nature of the boarding team that helps children to quickly settle and makes them feel that they are home from home from French plaiting hair to gently reminding children to remember their granny’s birthday. Please contact Philippa on 01460 72051 or admissions@ perrotthill.com to find out more about boarding opportunities. Wellington School Open Morning If it is academic results you are concerned about for your child, Wellington School has just what you need. This summer, we had superb GCSE and A level results across all subjects with 5 of our pupils securing their Oxbridge offers and over 70% gaining places at Russell Group universities. Pupils study the more rigorous IGCSE in Maths and Science as well as Latin and Greek and the emphasis is strongly academic. But Wellington has so much more to offer than exam results. With a Director in Residence, the performing arts go from strength to strength. From the rip-roaring success of spectacular musicals to serious Chekhov productions and a huge range of bands, orchestras and ensembles, the whole school is taking advantage of a range of exciting opportunities. Our superb Chapel Choir performs regularly and our versatile musicians regularly delight audiences whether they’re performing at high profile competitions or improvised jazz sessions. We have superb sports facilities and a unique new Sport and Wellbeing department with specialist strength and conditioning coaches who take fitness to new levels across all sporting disciplines. Steffan Jones, ex Somerset Cricketer is also developing an elite cricket
and sporting programme, so Wellington is the place to be for sport. We nurture and teach pupils from 2 -11 in the Prep School and 11-18 in the Senior School, and we are justly proud of the rounded, all-encompassing education they receive. We call it “Learning for Life”. This term, Wellington Prep School has opened its doors to a host of two year olds in the new Chapel Nursery. Situated in the former Salvation Army Hall in the town, the lovely building, which sits on the edge of the School’s campus, has been redeveloped to create a superb
nursery unit for the youngest members of our community. It will be open all year round from 8.00am to 6.00pm each week day with flexible options for busy families who are keen for their children to receive an excellent start in life. Bubbling fun to be had at St. Margaret’s brand new Bubble Rush event Following the success of their Great Somerset Colour Run in May, St. Margaret’s Hospice has announced that they have added an exciting new event to their 2016 events calendar… The Bubble Rush! Held on October 2nd 2016, this event will see the beautiful Longrun Meadow, Taunton, come alive in a burst of colourful bubbles. Participants will make their way around a 5k course through 4 coloured bubble stations, with high powered canons blowing out 30 cubic metres a minute of frothy milkshake bubbles. A trained team of Bubble Commandos man each foam cannon to make sure participants get covered in colourful frothy foam. Tickets are £25 for an adult, and £15 for a child, and include a t-shirt, medal and goody bag. St. Margaret’s Events Project Lead, Sonia Bateman, said “We
are really excited to bring this brand new event to Taunton. It’s the perfect event for families and there’ll be entertainment throughout the day, so even those who aren’t taking part in the course can join in the fun. “St. Margaret’s Hospice is a Somerset charity, which means it is mainly funded by donations and money raised through events such as the Bubble Rush. 1 in 3 people will need the support of St.
Margaret’s Hospice in their lifetime, and the hospice cares for over 3,200 people each year. The support we receive at events like the Bubble Rush is hugely appreciated and helps the hospice continue to make each day count for patients and families affected by a lifelimiting illness across Somerset.” For more information and to book your place at the Bubble Rush, please visit www.stmargarets-hospice.org.uk.

Alice has won many awards and competitions for both piano and singing. She has been a full time professional performer and entertainer and is now passing on her experience to students of all ages and abilities. She is a firm believer in 'the basics' and teaches music theory alongside the practical. She also teaches those who just want to play piano for fun. Alice has trained a number of singers, including a recording artist in London and a number of students now attending theatrical schools. She herself still performs regularly, singing
and playing many music styles from jazz and classics to pop. Alice takes the teaching of music seriously and regularly refreshes her technique by attending ABRSM organised seminars and practical courses. She says "For me to give the best possible teaching, I need to be aware of all the latest styles and techniques". It is this devotion to her students that has led to their success, and the success of her London school. For more information go to www.pianoandvocal.co.uk

Chard School celebrates 345 years of history
One of the oldest schools in the country, Chard School has been educating children in its historic buildings since 1671, and this year celebrated its 345th anniversary in style, with a trip back in time for the current pupils, culminating in a pageant through the town. The school buildings themselves, which contain two spiral staircases and a wealth of period features, remind
everyone of a certain famous wizarding school and, just as at Hogwarts, the atmosphere at Chard is truly unique. This forthcoming academic year the school continues to move forward, with a healthy increase in pupil numbers. Our pupils are happy and motivated learners who truly benefit from the individual tuition our small classes can give them, and who also have the opportunities to become
involved in the many artistic, musical and sporting activities that are on offer. Our next Open Morning will be on Saturday 8th October, 9.30-11.30am. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet staff and pupils, have a tour of our extensive facilities and take in our wonderful historical buildings on the way! For more information contact the school office on 01460 63234 or visit www.chardschool.co.uk.

Bicycling to the Moon By Timo Parvela Published by Gecko Press. Ages: 8+ Purdy the cat and Barker the dog live together in a sky-blue house on top of hill. Barker likes the garden. He wants only to dig, to scratch up the earth and turn it over. But Purdy has big dreams: he wants to fly south with the birds, win the singing competition, be a Supercat. Purdy’s antics, dreams and sly manipulation of his friend are laugh-out-loud funny, while the very warm heart to these stories will have every reader wishing they had a good friend like Barker.
Ludwig the Space Dog By Henning Lohlein Published by Bonnier. Ages: 5+ Ludwig is a small dog who lives in a book with his friends. Everything in their world is made of paper. He tries everything he can think of to fly away and go exploring, but nothing works. And then something from another dimension crashes onto Ludwig's page . . .
Yours Sincerely, Giraffe By Megumi Iwasa, illustrated by Jun Takabatake Published by Gecko Press. Ages: 8+ Giraffe is bored, as usual. He’d love a friend to share things with. So he writes a letter and sends it as far as possible across the other side of the horizon. There he finds a pen pal – Penguin. Giraffe knows nothing about penguins and his letters are full of questions. What does a penguin look like? Where is a penguin’s neck? It’s hard to imagine someone you’ve never seen…And so the letters fly from horizon to horizon.
The Potion Diaries – Royal Tour By Amy Alward Published by Simon and Schuster. CLASSIFIED Marge in Charge By Isla Fisher Published by Piccadilly Press. Ages: 5-8 Jemima and Jake ‘s new babysitter doesn’t look too promising. In fact she looks very sensible, very old and VERY small (she only comes up to daddy’s armpit!). But the moment their parents leave the house, Marge gives a mischievous wink, takes off her hat and reveals a marvellous mane of rainbow-coloured hair! Marge really is a babysitter like no other and the children spend a wild evening with her – racing snails, slurping chocolate soup and mixing potions in the bath! But if Jake and Jemima want her to babysit again it’s time for them to take charge of Marge, tidy up and settle her down for a little sleep.
The Pocket Dog By Holly Webb Published by Scholastic Children’s Books. Ages: 7+ In ‘The Pocket Dog’, best-selling author Holly Webb sensitively and imaginatively explores the theme of friendship. Kitty is jealous of Erin, the new girl in class. She has a phone and seems much cooler than herself. Confused, Kitty starts to take it out on her friend, Bella, and once she starts being mean, she can’t find a way to stop. It takes the love of her little dachsund puppy, Frank, to show her that bullying isn’t the answer and to bring the two friends together. A beautiful story about friendship, Holly's writing is a perfect balance between contemporary and classic, and is complemented with illustrations throughout.
Warrior Bronze By Michelle Paver Published by Puffin. Ages: 9+ Michelle Paver’s bestselling Bronze Age series reaches its dramatic, spine-tingling conclusion with the fifth novel ‘Warrior Bronze’. Hylas and Pirra return to Akea for their final confrontation with their archenemies, the Crows. They must recover the dagger of Koronos if they are to end the warriors’ brutal rule. Only if old and new friends join forces can they hope to triumph – but the price of victory may be higher than either Hylas or Pirra has dreamed…
Goodnight Everyone By Chris Haughton Published by Walker Books. Ages: 18 months+ A stunningly illustrated bedtime book, perfect for sending toddlers off to dreamland from multi award winning picture book maker Chris Haughton. With Chris’ signature block colour design, readers are introduced to bears, deer, rabbits and teeny, tiny mice – who are all beginning to feel really…rather…tired… YAWN! “Dear me, “ says Great Big Bear, “it must be time for bed!” But Little Bear is certainly not sleepy – he’s wide awake! For now…
The Secret Cooking Club By Laurel Remington Published by Chicken House. Ages: 10+ Mix three cups of friendship, a spoonful of cringey Mum and a sprinkle of first love – and what do you have? A warm, touching and cosy novel, perfect to satisfy your cooking cravings during the next series of The Great British Bake Off! Shy Scarlett is the star and victim of her mum’s popular lifestyle blog – the butt of school jokes, she’s eager to stay firmly out of the spotlight. But one evening, she finds a gorgeous kitchen in the house next door, left empty by an elderly neighbour in hospital. As Scarlett bakes, she starts to transform her life, discovering new friends and forming the Secret Cooking Club. But can she find the secret ingredients – to cake, family and friendship? They All Saw a Cat By Brendan Wenzel Published by Chronicle. Ages: 3-5 In this glorious celebration of observation, curiosity, and imagination, Brendan Wenzel’s simple, rhythmic prose and ingenious illustrations take readers on an imaginary walk alongside a cat. But while a child sees a cat that is soft and fluffy, a goldfish only sees terrible yellow eyes distorted by the lens of his fishbowl, a mouse mostly registers ferocious teeth and claws, and a bat sees a cat-shaped collection of white dots illuminating the dark. Each animal’s vision of the cat is informed by a combination of proximity, physiology and emotion, in a quietly brilliant demonstration of the power of perception. The Last Kids on Earth and the Zombie Parade By Max Brallier, illustrated by Douglas Holgate Published by Egmont. Ages: 8+ Jack Sullivan is back! It’s still Total Monster Zombie Chaos on the streets, but now Jack has a gang of friends to help him through – science genius and best friend Quint, super-strong Dirk and allround coolest girl ever, June. Not to mention Rover, Jack’s awesome monster pet! Plus the treehouse is more souped up than ever, chockablok with defensive gizmos and ready to withstand anything that the monster apocalypse can throw at it. Which is just as well, because there’s something extra-big and extra-monstrous marching right around the corner…
