Dear Readers...

Welcome back after the long summer break and I hope you all had a relaxing/exhausting (delete as appropriate) time. I can’t quite believe that it’s back to school and that time of year when I, for one, try to make certain New Year type resolutions eg make sure children’s shoes are polished, check school bags, make sure homework is a) completed and b) handed in. Sound familiar? When reading this issue, you’ll notice that we’re featuring lots of independent schools with many of them hosting Open Days later this month or in October. Several offer scholarships and generous bursaries so they’re worth considering and even if you’re not convinced at this stage, visitors are usually greeted with tea and cake! Meanwhile, I’m looking forward to seeing my first new £10 note complete with Jane Austen and enhanced security features. If you need to know how to check a genuine £10, see pages 10-11. Happy reading! Tamsin

loved ones 'have felt lonely or socially isolated' Jo Cox Commission on Loneliness shines a spotlight on unpaid carers It’s time to start a conversation about caring, as new research from Carers UK shows more action is needed to support unpaid carers who feel isolated and lonely. Greater understanding from friends, colleagues, and the public, as well as more opportunities for breaks and social activities, are all needed to combat a ‘silent epidemic’ of loneliness affecting those providing support to ill, older or disabled loved ones. More than 8 in 10 surveyed unpaid carers described themselves as “lonely or socially isolated” due to their caring responsibilities, with those affected facing a potentially damaging impact on their mental and physical wellbeing. The report suggests that current carers who have not felt lonely were less likely to suffer mental and physical illhealth compared to those who did. Carers who had felt lonely or isolated were almost twice as likely to report worsened mental and physical health. Amongst carers, an unwillingness to talk to others about care responsibilities was a key barrier to inclusion at work, home and in the community. One third felt “uncomfortable” talking to friends about caring, as did those who felt “isolated” at work due to care responsibilities. Alongside a lack of understanding from others, carers most frequently ascribed loneliness or social isolation to a lack of time or money to socialise and the difficulty of leaving the house due to caring commitments. The research reveals that certain caring circumstances are linked to lonelier care experiences, such as younger

carers under 24 years old, carers of disabled children, people who care for 50 hours or more per week or ‘sandwich carers’ who look after loved ones alongside parenting responsibilities. The recently released findings are part of the charity’s work with the Jo Cox Commission on Loneliness. The Commission aims to ‘Start a Conversation’ around loneliness, mobilising the public to combat the ‘silent epidemic’ by destigmatising a prevalent but often unaddressed issue. As a founding partner of the Jo Cox Commission on Loneliness, Carers UK is joining forces with other charities including Age UK and Carers Trust to shine a spotlight on loneliness in caring, along with ways to break isolation.

Carers UK is urging both carers and the wider public to do the following: ● Among friends and family, we can start by putting ourselves in the shoes of others and seeking to understand each unique caring situation through honest conversation. ● In the workplace, we can start a conversation by talking about caring issues with colleagues and promoting carer-friendly policies. ● In the community, we can start a caring conversation as we go about our daily business, whatever we do for a living whether for example we’re a shop assistant, a GP, a leisure centre manager, a pharmacist, or work in an office. ● As carers, we can identify the key triggers for our loneliness

and start a conversation with somebody in a position to support us. This could mean opening up to family and friends, or checking out Carers UK’s online guides (www.carersuk. org/help-and-advice) to see what help is available or joining Carers UK – a supportive community and movement of carers and former carers www.carersuk.org/ how-you-can-help/join-us ● To feel more connected to other carers, ‘Starting a Conversation’ in the Carers UK online forum (carersuk.org/ forum), via social media using the #HappytoChat hashtag, or within a local support group carersuk.org/help-and-advice/ get-support/local-support can help you connect to people experiencing similar situations

do it; as she’s only eight years old both of us are going to take part and we can’t wait. “I’m so proud of Zara, not only is she brave but she also has autism so to do something like this is truly inspirational. We’re now encouraging others to come along to Portishead

Marina and join us for a day of fun for all the family. These adorable dogs do such a wonderful job in helping save people's lives and it’s lovely to know that Zara’s fundraising will also help save the lives of patients being treated at Bath’s RUH.”

To take part, simply sign up at www.foreverfriendsappeal. co.uk or call: 01225 821535. Book early to avoid disappointment as there are limited places for this event. Don’t miss this opportunity to meet these amazing dogs and be rescued one of them.

Take the plunge, be rescued by Newfoundland dog and help support RUH patients Members of the public are invited to take the plunge at Portishead Marina in Bristol and experience a water rescue by a 14 stone hero, a Newfoundland Dog to raise funds for the Royal United Hospitals (RUH), Bath. Taking place on Saturday 30 September, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience an ‘at sea’ Newfoundland water rescue. Newfoundland dogs have been the St. Bernards of the sea for hundreds of years. They are natural swimmers and have webbing between their paws to help them swim, making it an impressive sight to see them in action. This is the first year when both the RUH’s fundraising 4 Parent Talk September 2017

charity, The Forever Friends Appeal and Newfound Friends, the Bristol-based charity have teamed up to offer an exciting event to raise vital funds towards the Appeal’s Cancer Care Campaign as well as wards and departments at the RUH. Emily Lynch, Events and Community Officer, The Forever Friends Appeal said: “We’re excited to be working with Newfound Friends and we’re now asking people to sign up online to take part in our first Newfoundland water rescue day. Anyone aged 8 years old and up can take part, including non-swimmers as everyone will be given a life-jacket on the day. “If you want to take part, all we ask for is a £30 registration fee to secure your place and for you

to pledge to raise a minimum of £100 in sponsorship money. You can choose to dedicate your fundraising to a ward or department in the RUH or towards the new RUH Cancer Centre.” Participants will be provided with a wet suit (hire fee included in entry fee) and will be taken out into the marina by boat. Once they are in the water, one of the Newfoundland dogs will join you to take you safely back to the boat. Amy Hedges and her eight year old daughter Zara, have already signed up to take the plunge. Amy said: “When my daughter Zara heard about the Newfoundland Water Rescue event she immediately asked if she could

OUT & ABOUT

10 reasons to cycle, scoot or walk the school run The new school year is the perfect opportunity to change travel habits. Chris Bennett, Head of Behaviour Change at Sustrans, the UK walking and cycling charity, shares his top 10 reasons to shake up your school run.

1

Cycling, scooting or walking the school run is an easy way of building physical activity into the whole family’s daily routine. According to government guidelines, children and young people aged 5 to 18 need at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day, while adults should get a minimum of 150 minutes a week. At 1.6 miles, the average primary school journey is a distance that can be cycled, scooted or walked as an easy way of building more activity into our busy lives.

2

Not only is it great for your physical health, it can also boost mental health and wellbeing. Physical activity can increase mental alertness, energy, positive mood and self-esteem, as well as reducing stress and anxiety, according to the Mental Health Foundation. It’s a great way to start the day – not just for kids but for parents too.

3

Teachers find that pupils who walk, cycle or scoot arrive at school more relaxed, alert and ready to start the day than those who travel by car. Parents can benefit in the same way and burn some precious calories along the way – a 20-minute bike ride can use the same amount of calories as a cappuccino, a bar of chocolate or a 175ml glass of wine.

4

More people cycling, scooting or walking ultimately means there are less cars on the road, helping ease congestion outside the school gates. The proportion of children walking and cycling to school has been declining in England since 1995, with the number being driven to primary school increasing each year - as many as one in four cars on the road during the morning peak are on the school run. Leaving the car at home means you’ll take the hassle out of parking too.

5

Less cars means less pollution, making the air we breathe cleaner for everyone. Up to 40,000 early deaths are attributable to air pollution each year in the UK – only smoking contributes to more early deaths. Road transport is responsible for 80% of the pollution where legal limits are

being broken and children are particularly affected. What’s more, those who travel by car can experience five times higher pollution levels than those who cycle and three and a half times more than those walking the same route. Not only is air pollution harmful to humans, it also affects animal and plant life.

6

Cycling, scooting or walking to school increases children’s awareness of road safety as well as boosting independence. Instilling a love of cycling, scooting or walking in children from a young age has longlasting benefits – as well as developing road awareness to encourage independent travel as a teenager, it can also create good habits for an active adult life.

7

Travelling under your own steam provides the perfect opportunity to connect with the world around you. Cycling, scooting and walking brings you closer to nature and the changes in the seasons. Whether it’s spotting wildlife or noticing the leaves changing colour on the trees, two wheels are better than four

when it comes to connecting with nature and get to know your local area.

How to help your child cycle or scoot to school - Sustrans’ top tips for parents

8

Mornings are a busy time for parents and it can be overwhelming to get your child ready for cycling or scooting on top of other things you need to do before leaving home. With a little preparation cycling or scooting can be the best way to get to school. Here are our top tips to help your child become a bicycle or scooter commuter. ● Plan your journey in advance. Choose a smooth, flat route and avoid steep hills and busy roads where possible. When starting out it’s a good idea to take your child to the park or another traffic-free area to practise their cycling or scooting. Sustrans is the pioneer and guardian of the National Cycle Network – with thousands of miles of trafficfree routes across the UK, the Network is the ideal place to build confidence. For more information and inspiration visit www.sustrans.org.uk. ● Make sure your child's bike fits and all your bikes are roadworthy. ● If you’re using a scooter, ensure any bolts are tightened before setting off and check the wheels and handlebars

You’ll save money Cycling, scooting or walking the school run will save you and your family a small fortune. Not only will you be forking out less on petrol, you might also save money on gym fees, leaving you with more cash in your pocket.

9

It benefits us all From health to road safety, retail and tourism, there is a growing body of evidence demonstrating the economic benefits of cycling and walking. In England alone 10 billion annual journeys are undertaken every year by bike and on foot, with an estimated combined economic value of £14 billion.

10

And if all that’s not enough, just think of all the fresh air, freedom and fun you’ll have along the way. Taking time out of your day to cycle, scoot or walk together is a great chance to catch up on your child’s day and spend quality time with each other while enjoying the fresh air and freedom of travelling under your own steam.

are attached securely. Make sure any folding parts are fully locked in the riding position. ● Children should wear sensible shoes such as trainers. Flip-flops and sandals aren’t suitable. Avoid wearing baggy clothing which may get caught up in the bike or scooter. ● Don’t hang anything on the handlebars as it could upset the balance of the bike or scooter. ● If you're on the road with children take up a position behind them. If there are two adults in your group it's a good idea to have one at the back and one in front of the children. ● Set a good example: follow the Highway Code and teach children road safety and awareness. ● When your child is scooting on the pavement make sure you walk nearest the road. Encourage children to go slowly or to walk where necessary when passing other people on the pavement. ● Your child should get off their bike or scooter when crossing roads. ● Helmets are recommended for young children, though ultimately this is a question of individual choice and parents need to make that choice for their children.

EDUCATION, INFORMATION

All round excellence at Wellington School

If it is academic results you are concerned about for your child, Wellington School has just what you need. We had superb GCSE and A Level results across all subjects and a number of our pupils are heading to Oxford or Cambridge this year with many more heading to other prestigious Russell Group Universities. Pupils study the more rigorous iGCSE in Maths, Languages and Sciences as well as Latin and Greek and the emphasis is strongly academic. However, Wellington has so much more to offer than exam results. The performing arts go from strength to strength and pupils have just enjoyed producing a spectacular West End standard production of Sweeney Todd, as well as a production of Oliver! There are workshops, creative performances and technical opportunities and with a huge

range of bands, orchestras and ensembles, the whole school is taking advantage of many exciting opportunities. EDUCATION, INFORMATION

Are our Schools just Stick Man trails help youngsters get stuck exam factories? The Institute of Directors (IoD) recently criticised schools for failing to prepare children for the workplace with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed. It begs the question what’s the point of the current obsession with exam results? Have we just become exam factories? How are we measuring intelligence? What about creativity and interpersonal skills? We have an education system designed and conceived in a different age based around the thinking that there are only two types of ability – academic and non-academic. This has led to many brilliant people thinking they are not ‘intelligent’ as they are being judged against this limiting mindset. Our education system has become a production line – ringing bells, children educated in batches based on date of manufacture (their age), siphoned off into separate subjects and separate facilities. Instead of nurturing those skills that are valuable in a computerised

into the natural world

age, our current model stamps out innate creativity and divergent thinking and prizes standardisation instead. The exam factory model squashes children into an antiquated education machine and spits them out as conformists, experts in rote learning and memory challenges rather than deep

thinking and enquiry. At Sidcot School we are determined to buck the trend in order to deliver an education that prepares our students, not just for the process of the exam system while it remains, but with the resilience, skills and aptitudes that will help them lead interesting and purposeful lives.

Not just an exam factory We educate students rather than simply train them to pass tests. Find out how we can prepare your child for a life of adventure.

Open Morning Friday 29th September 9am start

Popular picture book character, Stick Man, is teaming up with local community groups across the UK this autumn to encourage urban children to get outdoors and explore the natural world. Fun-filled activity trails are coming to flagship community growing sites around the UK from September, thanks to the support of Stick Man brand owner Magic Light Pictures. Based on the much-loved picture book written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler, the selfguided trails are designed to help children go on their own adventure with the character, find out more about the natural world and learn how things grow. The trails, aimed at three to seven year olds, will offer an interactive learning experience for Stick Man fans. Brightly coloured boards featuring Stick Man and other characters from the picture book will be used alongside an activity pack, with children able to claim a reward for completing the trail. The trails are being piloted initially in four flagship community growing sites, one in each UK country. They are appearing from 13th September at Windmill Hill City Farm in Bristol, Greenmeadow Community Farm in Wales, Polbeth and West Calder Community Garden in Scotland and Colin Glen Trust, which runs a community forest park in Northern Ireland. The first trail to launch will be at a special Stick Man celebration day at Windmill Hill City Farm on September 13th. There will be lots of other activities to keep the little ones entertained, including Stick Man-inspired food and goody give-aways, craft workshops and more.

Using sticks to cook popcorn at Lawrence Weston Community Farm, Bristol

It's hoped that thousands of parents and young children will ‘twig' how much fun the trails can be and become new and regular visitors to their local growing group. The initiative is part of a national campaign called Local Heroes, which aims to get more people, including children, involved with their local community growing groups, such as city farms, community gardens, therapy gardens and community orchards. There are estimated to be over 2,500 community growing groups in the UK, most of which rely on voluntary support and need more help to thrive. Heidi Seary, project manager

of the Growing Together partnership which is leading the Local Heroes campaign, said: "We hope that hundreds of young children and families will be inspired to go on their own outdoor adventure with Stick Man at a community growing site, where they can have fun, as well as learn more about the natural world and how things grow. "Our new Stick Man trails will provide children, particularly those in urban areas who have little access to the countryside, with an opportunity to play and learn outdoors, at the same time as raising the profile of local community growing groups, which help make local neighbourhoods better, healthier and friendlier places." "If the trails are as popular as we hope, we plan to ‘branch out' the Stick Man trails and activities to other local community groups next year." Daryl Shute, brand director at Magic Light Pictures, said: "Encouraging exploration and learning about nature are core values for the Stick Man brand so we are really excited to bring these trails into a new, urban setting and reach a wider audience." The New £10 Note The new £10 note is printed on polymer

£10 Design

— a thin and flexible plastic material. It’s around 15% smaller than the paper £10 note. Polymer notes provide enhanced counterfeit resilience and help increase the quality of notes in circulation.

Tactile feature on the front of the £10 polymer note

(the side with raised print), there are two clusters of raised dots in the top left hand corner. This tactile feature helps blind and partially sighted people identify the value of the note. The polymer £20 will also have a tactile feature, but with a different pattern. The polymer £5 will be identifiable as the only polymer note without a tactile feature.

Issued 14 September 2017

The new £10 note incorporates enhanced security features. There are also a number of design elements which relate to Jane Austen.

Jane Austen (1775 - 1817) was an English novelist who, using wit and social observation, provided astute insights into 19th century life, often praising the virtues of reason and intelligence and highlighting some of the barriers that society erected against the progression of women. Jane began to write when she was just 11 years old, and by the age of 23 she had already drafted early versions of some of her most famous novels including Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility. All of Jane’s work was published anonymously so, despite the fact her work was generally well received and even became fashionable in some circles, she achieved little recognition until after her death.

The new polymer £20 note, featuring JMW Turner, will be issued in 2020.

A portrait of Jane Austen can be found on the back of the note. This was commissioned by James Edward Austen Leigh (Jane Austen’s nephew) in 1870, adapted from an original sketch drawn by her sister Cassandra Austen in 1810. Next to the portrait is an illustration of Elizabeth Bennet, a character from Pride and Prejudice. The quote ‘I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading!’ was said by Miss Bingley in Pride and Prejudice. Beneath this image is Godmersham Park House, the estate owned by Jane Austen’s brother. The foil image over the window is Winchester Cathedral, where Jane Austen was buried in 1817, aged just 41. 2017, the year the note is launched, marks the 200th anniversary of her death.

Can I still use the paper £10 note?

You can continue to use the paper £10 note, featuring Charles Darwin, until it is withdrawn from circulation in Spring 2018. Notice will be given at least 3 months prior to the withdrawal date. Genuine Bank of England banknotes that have been withdrawn from circulation retain their face value for all time and can be exchanged at the Bank of England. Visit www.bankofengland.co.uk

Banknote checklist – Features to look for on the new polymer £10 note Follow these simple steps to verify your new £10 note’s security features. Remember do not rely on just one feature, check a few. 5

1

There is a large see-through window on the note. A clearly defined portrait of the Queen is printed on the window with the words ‘£10 Bank of England’ printed twice around the edge. A finely detailed metallic image of Winchester Cathedral is positioned over the window. The foil is gold on the front of the note and silver on the back of the note. When the note is tilted a multicoloured rainbow effect can be seen. The foil £ symbol in the window is silver on the front of the note and copper on the back of the note.

2

4

Check the foil patches On the front of the note, below the see-through window, is a silver foil patch. When the note is tilted the word ‘Ten’ changes to ‘Pounds’ and a multi-coloured rainbow effect can be seen.

2

At the side of the window is a coloured quill which changes from purple to orange when the note is tilted. This effect can be seen on the front and back of the note.

7

5

On the front of the note, above the see-through window, is a silver foil patch containing an image of the coronation crown which appears in 3D. When the note is tilted a multi-coloured rainbow effect can be seen.

6

On the back of the note, there is a bookshaped copper foil patch which contains the letters JA. It is immediately behind the silver crown on the front.

7

Check the polymer and the raised print The note is printed on polymer which is a thin and flexible plastic material. By running your finger across the front of the note you can feel raised print in areas such as the words ‘Bank of England’ and in the bottom right corner, around the number 10.

8

Check the print quality The printed lines and colours on the note are sharp, clear and free from smudges or blurred edges

9

Check the microlettering Using a magnifying glass, look closely at the lettering beneath the Queen’s portrait – you will see the value of the note written in small letters and numbers.

10

3

Check the ultra-violet feature If you look at the front of the note under a good quality ultra-violet light, the number 10 appears in bright red and green whilst the background remains dull in contrast.

All Hallows - where Taunton School Nursery and Pre-Prep are happy children are consistently outstanding successful children Dr Trevor Richards has lead All Hallows to a stellar scholarship year in his first year of headship. Pupils from All Hallows Prep School, East Cranmore, have enjoyed an especially successful scholarship season this year. In a year group of 40 pupils, 68% of children have achieved 41 scholarships to a variety of senior schools ranging from Oundle and Marlborough to Sherborne Girls. Happy children are successful children and All Hallows considers itself lucky to be able to help children grow and develop from Early Years to Year 8, where they leave as confident young people ready to stride out into their chosen secondary school. Dr Richards, said “it’s brilliant to see the vast majority of our Year 8 pupils achieve such a variety of scholarships to their chosen senior schools. At All Hallows we pride ourselves on not being an academic pressure cooker, and our results this year prove that happy children are successful

children”. A chartered psychologist, Dr Richards practises what he preaches,

by overseeing the SENCo provision and regularly leading whole child meetings.

All Hallows is a Catholic Preparatory School situated in 25 acres of beautiful Somerset countryside; with an emphasis on being a “muddy knees prep school”. Still accepting pupils for entry in September 2017, do call Admissions 01749 881609 to book a tour of the school.

The forward thinking independent school is justifiably proud its third consecutive outstanding Independent Schools Inspectorate report. The well-established Taunton School Nursery and Pre-Prep was praised by inspectors for once again achieving outstanding (the highest possible grade) across all five areas of inspection. The School aims to make learning irresistible, combining the best of modern and traditional teaching methods, in an environment of opportunity to afford greater success. Set in 56 acres, it seeks to challenge, nurture and inspire little ones to provide them with an outstanding Early Years education for ages 0-7. The highly qualified staff seek to develop a strong sense of principles, compassion, respect and creative thinking. In the latest report, Inspectors stated: “Children make excellent progress in their learning and development relative to their starting points.” The report continues: “Pupils’

attainment is above and often well above national agerelated expectations” and “They demonstrate an ambitious vision to create a safe and caring environment where all children can thrive”. Kathy McLauchlan, Head of Nursery and Pre-Prep said: “We believe children need to be children and we strive to

provide the highest quality care and education in line with our vision of excellence and opportunity. Happy, sociable children are successful learners and we’re ambitious for each and every child who joins us. Investing in the Early Years of your child’s education is proven to be the best investment a parent will ever make.”

With summer holidays feeling like a distant memory, the school year begins with many children making the move up to ‘Big School’. Mrs Helen Snow, Head of Sunny Hill Prep School in Bruton, talks about how to make sure your child gets the most from school life. That first day at a new school is approaching. The butterflies have started… and that’s just the parents! Very often it’s mum and dad who are more anxious about the thought of starting a new school. Whether you are sending your child to school for the first time or have made the choice to move schools, you need to know you are sending your child to a school which suits them and where they can be happy and thrive.

Supporting students in Yeovil to reach their potential As another school year starts, students and their families are starting to look towards the future. For many young people, developing a passion early on in life will lead them to their future career. Performing arts is one such area where the desire and training often starts early. But in this highly competitive field, young people need as much support as possible to achieve their dreams.

Razzamataz Yeovil works hard to assist their students through their professional training. Razzamataz provides the help they need to establish connections and gain experience in this competitive industry. Performing arts is widely spoken about as being one of the most positive influences on a child’s life. It is not only for those that want to go on and make a career on the stage; performing arts stimulate all children’s creativity. At Razzamataz Yeovil students of all ages get a chance to work with industry professionals. Razzamataz regularly host master classes where experienced professional performers come into the school to teach. Yeovil will be visited by Abby from WestEnd Workshops this October to work with all the students on puppetry techniques.

Razzamataz Yeovil offers a wide range of performing arts styles for children from the ages of 2-18 with classes in dance, drama and singing. Students experience various genres from classic West End musical theatre through to pop singing and street dance. In all sessions, the emphasis is on having fun and bringing out the creativity and unique potential in each and every student.

B E PA RT O F THE FUN St. Margaret’s Hospice supporters taking part in last year’s Night Walk

It’s all about the 80s at St. Margaret’s Hospice next big fundraising event! Relive the disco years and pledge to raise £80 in sponsorship, which will help pay for critical community care across the county for patients with a life-limiting illness. On Saturday 16th September, the nine mile St. Margaret’s Hospice Night Walk will follow a circular route from Yeovil Town Football Club, Huish Park, with stunning night time views over Somerset from Ham Hill, before returning back to the Football Club. St. Margaret’s Events Manager, Richard Wallace, said “As we’re

adding an 80’s twist to this year’s event, we’re asking our supporters to raise £80 in sponsorship. If everyone achieved this, the money raised could pay for three days of community care across Somerset, supporting patients and their families facing a lifelimiting illness.” On the night, registration will open at 7pm and the walk will begin at 8pm. It should take around three to four hours, with refreshments

available at the Prince of Wales Pub at Ham Hill. Entry is £15 for adults and £10 for children (aged 6-16), and includes a t-shirt and medal. Participants will be able to personalise their t-shirts with fluorescent pens and stickers before the walk starts. St. Margaret’s Hospice is a charity and needs to raise £7.5million every year to deliver its care. It is therefore hugely reliant on the generosity of the Somerset community.

EDUCATION, INFORMATION

Chard School Open Day Saturday 7th October 2017, 9.30-11.30am One of the oldest schools in the country, Chard School has been educating children in its historic buildings on the same site since 1671. Chard is a small independent school for children aged four to eleven with an excellent academic record, situated in Chard, close to the meeting point of Somerset, Devon and Dorset. The extensive curriculum is designed to prepare pupils for independent, state and grammar school entrance as well as scholarship examinations. At Chard, our guiding principle is to find the most effective teaching approach for each and every child and to instil a sense of fun and discovery into the learning process. Our pupils are happy and motivated learners who truly benefit from the individual tuition our small classes can give them, and who also have the opportunities to become involved in the many artistic, musical and sporting activities that are on offer. As an intentionally small school we are able to cultivate a true ‘family feel’ where all adults and

children know each other well and benefit from the friendly and supportive environment that we encourage. Our next Open Morning will be on Saturday 7th October,

Unplugged Parenting By Dr Elizabeth Kilbey Published by Headline Recommended for parents with a child under 11 (in the latency stage of brain development) to help navigate the tricky pathway of how much screen-time to allow on a daily basis. Play has gone from a physical, creative experience using toys and imagination to something that now involves sitting down alone for hours at a time. Parents are dealing with children who don’t listen to them, who are unable to concentrate for very long, who refuse to do homework and who constantly battle against them for more screen time. In this book, Dr Elizabeth Kilbey offers tangible, practical advice about how to ‘unplug’ your child from their device so their online time doesn’t become all-consuming and how we, as parents, can plug in to connect with our children.

Great Minds and How to Grow Them By Wendy Berliner and Deborah Eyre Published by Routledge There is room at the top of the class for more children than we ever thought possible, but life at home with their parents provides the key to reaching that success. Grounded in decades of research and evidence, this inspirational and accessible handbook shows parents how to grow the potential and the minds of their children, guiding them to success both at school and in life. A game-changer of a book, written in collaboration by a world-class academic and an awardwinning journalist. Supermyth Mum By Anya Hayes and Dr Rachel Andrew Published by White Ladder Press Feelings of anxiety, guilt and failure are all too common amongst busy modern mums especially if the goal is to be the ultimate SUPERMUM. But guess what, she doesn’t exist. Using CBT, mindfulness and other therapies, authors Anya Hayes and clinical psychologist Dr Rachel Andrew help parents build their parenting confidence and drown out those niggling competitive doubts.

A love of reading with BookTrust At BookTrust, the UK’s largest children’s reading charity, we know that reading and a love of books can transform lives. Children who read for pleasure are likely to do better at school, as well as be more socially, culturally and emotionally prepared for life. In fact, studies suggest that reading enjoyment is more important for a child’s educational success than their family’s financial or social status. Reading together, especially for babies and young children is a fantastic way to bond with your child, develop physical closeness, a shared experience and spend quality time together. We understand it’s difficult and time is precious but families play a key role in helping to encourage children to read. Families reading together in the home, having fun with stories and discussing the books their children are reading helps to develop an appreciation for stories and reading. From research, BookTrust knows that likelihood of frequent reading does decrease after age 5 with only 33% of parents reading with their 11-year-old every day or several times a week. BookTrust gifts books from birth and throughout school ages. As well as our flagship programme Bookstart which gifts free books to all children

at two key ages before school, we offer several reading programmes in schools to encourage reading for fun. For example, our Bookbuzz reading programme offers independent choice and develops a whole school reading culture whilst our school library pack is a free reading for pleasure programme available to secondary schools/ education providers in England with year 7 students. Advice for parents with older children We appreciate that as children get older there are plenty of other activities competing for their time and attention and we

understand that encouraging them to read can often be a challenge. Here are some tips: ● Ensure that your children see you reading - it can be a paper, a cookery book, short stories, anything really ● Encourage children to join in ask them to read the recipe from the cookbook aloud, or the TV guide ● Give them books or book tokens ● Encourage them to carry a book - At BookTrust we always say reading is such a versatile activity and can be done anytime, anyplace and anywhere.

● Visit libraries together and enjoying spending time choosing books they will enjoy - whether that’s books on cars, football or wimpy children ● Keep reading together - there are so many books to choose from that there is always something for everyone. If you're stuck, you can visit the BookTrust website and use our handy book finder to help you find a suitable story. BookTrust is the UK’s largest children’s reading charity. We work to inspire a love of reading in children because we know that reading can transform lives. Each year we reach 3.4 million children across the UK with books, resources and support to help develop a love of reading. Every parent receives a BookTrust book in their baby’s first year. Our books are delivered via health, library, schools and early years practitioners, and are supported with guidance, advice and resources to encourage the reading habit. Reading for pleasure has a dramatic impact on educational outcomes, wellbeing and social mobility, and is also a huge pleasure in itself. We are committed to starting children on their reading journey and supporting them throughout. booktrust.org.uk
