Paris KIDS with

1 Décember 2007 - January and February 2008

edito Today, the staff of Paris with Kids, the little brother of the magazine Paris Mômes, is celebrating the publication of its very first issue. Building on the success of the now 10 year-old French language original, it will be a bi-monthly guide for English speaking parents and their children who, whether visiting or residing in Paris, are interested in exploring the many cultural treasures scattered in and around France’s great capital city. We at Paris-Momes give pride of place to the “unusual”, whether in look, mood, or historical significance, because we see it as a way of reinforcing, through discovery, not only the special bond between parents and their kids but the very development of children in general. And since we know and love this city, it seemed right to want to share its treasures with you, the English-speaking readers of Paris with Kids, so that you too can experience our city as we do. ■ Chantal Herrmann

Circus/For all ages/20th/UNTIL 20TH JANUARY

A CELESTIAL CIRCUS Friendly, poetic circus at the city limits You won’t regret the trip to discover this circus. Take the metro to ‘Porte des Lilas’, follow the avenue of the same name and turn right at the junction onto the avenue du Docteur Gley before taking the first right on the rue Paul Meurice. Got it? In this tiny deserted alleyway lies a corner of heaven that you enter through the first blue tent which is both reception area and restaurant, (soups and brownies, dinner is served around 19h15). Once you’ve warmed up a bit, the show begins. There are no acrobatics but so much good humour and poetic ingenuity that it seem as if all the magic that circulates in Paris in wintertime has come to settle under this tent. The music – touches of jazz and shades of blues – is live and at the end of the show spectators are invited to come and dance in the arena.

A trip to the outer reaches of the city is more than worth it when the prize is a chance to see Zingaro’s equestrian theatre. Once you begin to make your way up the wooden steps of this unique arena, founded in 1989 by Bartabas, the artist-horseman, the whiff of the horses as they get ready for the night’s events will transport you to another world. Battuta is set during a wild gipsy party in the Carpathians. Horses and acrobats take off to the sound of the Shukar brass band from Moldavia and the Taraf musicians from Transylvania. If that isn’t enough for you, take yourself off to the Chateau de Versailles where Bartabas has created the Academy of Equestrian Theatre in the former Royal Stables. On Saturdays and Sundays you can see the horsemen train during morning practice before they prepare the Reprise Musicale, a show choreographed by Bartabas that shows off their skills to best advantage. While you are there, pay a visit to the stables where you might come across some of the famous blue-eyed white horses favoured by Louis XIV.

When you pass by in a hurry you don’t look at it twice, but the Tour Jean Sans Peur has been in the same spot since the Middle Ages and it continues to stand guard, venerable, majestic and resistant to change. It was originally built during the Hundred Years War that opposed the French and the English and it stands in the rue Etienne Marcel, a street much loved by the city’s slaves to fashion. A half an hour is all it takes to visit. As you mount the spiral staircase that leads to the master bedroom topped off with a magnificent oak sculpted ceiling, you enter a time machine. Restful art space with café in lively Sacré Cœur district The Halle Saint-Pierre is a haven of calm close to the hustle and bustle of Sacré-Cœur in the heart of a picturesque but touristy district of the city. This singular space has exhibitions of ‘raw art’, that is, art that sets its own rules. Until 9th March, 2008, there is an exhibition of work by Yolande Fièvre, an artist who deserves to be better known. She has spent her life creating works in three dimensions using found objects – shells, driftwood, stones – all of which are minutely assembled and framed. The result is fascinating for children who get lost in looking at the strange landscapes. There is also a café, a pleasant spot for tea and a cake (last orders at 17h30), and a bookshop with a good children’s section. Until 9th March, 2008. Halle Saint-Pierre, 2 rue Ronsard, 75018 Paris. THE CITÉ DES SCIENCES ET DE L’INDUSTRIE There are many good reasons for taking time off to visit the City of Science and Industry, one of them being that it caters to French, English and Spanish speakers. One part, the ‘Cité des Enfants’, specifically targets the littlest among us – from 2 years old (adult supervision required). Here they can have fun experimenting and learning basic concepts of physics, mechanics, and biology as they journey through an exciting interactive learning experience. The tour takes 1h30. In addition to loads of rotating exhibits on every floor, older kids (9-14 year-olds) will get a big kick out of the exhibit ‘Zizi sexuel, l’expo !’ (in English, “Sex - wot’s the big deal ? Love and sex explained to the pre-teens”)…a riotous and very clever interactive tour designed to tell you all you need to know about puberty, the birds and the bees. Before or after, you can pay a visit to the Argonaute, a real submarine built in1950 that is sitting right in front of the building. And if you go around the other side, you can’t help but come upon the Géode, an enormous polished steel ball that holds a 1,000 square meter hemispheric cinema that shows short documentary films. No chance to get bored. ● Cité des sciences et de l’industrie, 30 av. Corentin-Cariou, 75019 Paris. This temple of sound is home to concerts, shows, music workshops of every description (in French), and an excellent book-shop where one can find kid’s instruments as well as CDs and books. Don’t miss the museum where, among other things, you will find until 20th January a high quality exhibit about Richard Wagner. There is a fabulous collection of old musical instruments some of which, like the prehistoric flute carved out of a vulture bone, are very old indeed. THE GRANDE HALLE This recently restored steel and glass structure is typical of the industrial architecture of late nineteenth-century France. In it, there is a programme of shows and constantly renewed exhibits. Don’t be alarmed if, when you stroll around the walls, you hear strange croaks and growls: the Grande Halle (in English, ‘covered market’) is the temporary home of a gaggle of unlikely lodgers: vultures, otters, iguanas, and ravens whose presence contributes to the success of the current show, Bêtes et Hommes (Men and Beasts). And by the way, if you like the circus, you have come to the right place: until 6th January, the Tangier Acrobatic Circus has come to renew the old Moroccan tradition in “Taoub”, a mad-cap show about fabrics. Right up against the Grande Halle there is an enormous bookstore where one can buy a wide range of reading material for adults and children. open to all ages until 20 January 2007, Tuesday to Friday, from 10h00 to 18h00. and Sunday from 11h00 to 19h00. THE PARK Criss-crossed by concrete paths and vast lawns, this 55 hectare (121 acres) park, the biggest in Paris, is a splendid marriage of urban architecture and wideopen spaces. Between the works of important artists, play areas for children and a host of theme-inspired facilities, a stroll through is sure to hold many a surprise for the visitor. Our own preference is on the Porte de Pantin side where the Garden of Wind and Dunes is located. Here you’ll find things like giant air-filled cushions that roll like waves, tossing you into the air, swings, slides, trampolines, and tunnels, each adapted to a specific age group (2- 13). But you shouldn’t pass up the chance to cross over to the other side of the Ourcq Canal (take the little bridge) to go climb the Big Dragon. And you can be sure that your children will very quickly check out the merry-go-round and candy stalls set up along the edge of the water…

PARIS Photocoloriage (“Color me Paris!”). Admittedly this book isn’t intended to be a “Teachyourself” about contemporary art but in its own way, it accomplishes the same thing: it helps young readers to see things differently. Between its poetic photos and its clever discoveries, this colouring book invites us to take a fresh look at Paris. On one page, the budding artist can re-colour the Mona Lisa; on another, a stone gargoyle can be transformed into a dragon by simply adding flames, and on yet another, young inventors can design their own Eiffel Tower postcards. The book is as funny as it is informative. Even if the text is in French, it is amazing how the language of numbers speaks to readers wherever they come from. Counting penguins, classifying them, packing them together to save space – the young reader gets caught up in the fun of helping the family solve its problems of space and trying to pay for all the food the penguins eat. While he writes his funny kids’ songs in French, he also writes funny books and stories as well as cooking recipes where, for example, you learn that you can judge a ham by its colour: if it’s green, don’t eat it! In one of his CDs, En route avec le roi des Papas (Let’s go with the King of Daddies), he tells the story about a day he was leaving on vacation: the radio turned on first thing in the morning, the smell of the picnic basket in the back, the traffic jams… ● En voiture avec le Roi des Papas. If you happen to be in the Trocadéro district, at the Cité de l’Architecture for example, don’t hesitate to enter the Palais de Tokyo to get a bit to eat in an original setting. If you really insist there is always the Starbucks on the avenue de l’Opéra, but it bears no comparison to what’s across the street in this organic restaurant whose fake rustic exterior is just part of the sophistication. La Ferme on the corner of the rue Saint Roch and the rue Gomboust is decked out in pale wood, is non-smoking and has sandwiches made from cream cheese and dried ham, salads and freshly grated carrot as well as juices squeezed to order. The pastries are out of this world. Quite honestly, there’s nothing to match it in the vicinity. The Pasteis, a Portuguese speciality, is sublime, as is the brownie. Sunday brunch is a treat, at 17€ a head for adults and 12€ for children. ● La Ferme, 55 rue Saint-Roch, 75002 Paris. Tel. 01 40 20 12

WHEN CHINA MEETS PARIS Christmas baubles made from printed fabric, garlands of stars made from folded paper, kites, mobiles and brightly coloured children’s clothes: all this and more is at Petit Pan, a great address for some original gift ideas. Myriam de Loor, the designer who came up with the concept takes her inspiration from traditional Chinese motifs which she brings up to date to create a language that is fun. Petit Pan has just opened a second boutique on the rue François Miron which specialises in home linens, objects and vintage toys and also has an excellent on-line store. But our favourite remains the original, if tiny, first boutique on the rue de Prague that will transport you back to childhood in an instant. ● Petit Pan, 7 rue de Prague, 75012 Paris. A WELL-KEPT SWEDISH SECRET

Stohrer - for food lovers since 1730. Cake shop/2nd

THE CAKES THAT MAKE IT In the trendy rue Montorgueil (which at one time was a working-class district) the Stohrer pastry shop has been a favourite of gourmets since the eighteenth century. In 1725 when the King of Poland’s daughter married Louis XV she brought her favourite pastry cook with her. Five years later he set up shop on the rue Montorgueil. The woodwork and paintings dating from 1860 are of such note that they figure on the register of protected buildings. But that is not the only reason to go there: the cakes are mind-blowing. Our favourite is the ‘puits d’amour’, rich and romantic at the same time, or the old-fashioned ‘Religieuse’ that uses a recipe from the nineteenth century.

Tucked away at the back of a quiet street in the Marais is the magnificent Hôtel de Marle (admire the elegant sixteenth-century buildings and courtyard that are typical of the area), now home to the Swedish Cultural Centre and the Swedish Café. This is a simple and delicious place to stop off. Cosy and welcoming, it is furnished in pale wood but changes décor regularly in keeping with whatever Anna Nordenmark, the Swedish director – a graduate in art history – feels like at the time. For a long time she looked for a café that was fun for children and eventually ended up opening her own. House favourites include fun vegetable soups, carrot cakes, cinnamon buns and salmon sandwiches. Prices are reasonable and English is spoken. Don’t forget to take a trip round the Swedish Cultural Centre which often has very interesting exhibitions. Hotel de Marle, 11 rue Payenne, 75003 Paris. Tel. 01 44 78 80 11 and www.ccs.si.se. THE BABIES’ BISTRO If you’re travelling with baby the Poussette café and boutique is the place for you. After all, poussette means pram or stroller in French. Facing onto the street and a little local park, the spanking new décor is both restrained and soothing; impossible not to stop off and relax. Balloons, shelves packed with brightly coloured objects and a counter complete with high chairs where you can have tea, coffee, chocolate, light dishes and special menus for babies. Excellently thought out, there is a changing area, space for that stroller and a cosy corner complete with toys and colouring books. The staff is friendly and a selection of the day’s papers is available too. ● Le Poussette café, 6 rue Pierre Sémard, 75009 Paris. Tel. 01 78 10 49 00 and www.lepoussettecafé.com.
