MARKETS In Paris there are many good, cheap, and local markets and these are some of our favourites for food, antiques, bric-à-brac and more!

MARCHÉ D’ALIGRE The market is located in a very lively neighbourhood and it is one of Paris’ cheapest locations for grocery shopping. There are lots of different stands which sell fruits and vegetables and in addition to that there are a lot of stalls which put out their products by the pavement and sell them for reduced prices. You can find a couple of stands of organic products too, which are a little more pricey. Among them, meat, fish, cheese and dairy products, also the Boulangerie Moisan (Le Pain au naturel) is located just by the market, which makes amazing bread and pastries. Nearby shop Sabah carries a lot of Indian and Thai products, as well as spices and nuts for very affordable prices. There is a covered market just by the d’Aligre called Beauvau where you can buy quality food for higher prices, such as products imported directly from Italy (we strongly recommend buffalo mozzarella and Parma ham).

Place d’Aligre, 75012 Paris Tuesday-Saturday 9am-1pm // 4pm-7:30 pm Sunday 9am-1:30pm Monday Closed

PRICE EXAMPLES Bananas for 1,39€/kg Plums for 1,10€/kg Potatoes for 1€/per bag Sweet Potatoes for 2,39€/kg Clementines for 1,95€/kg White raisin for 1,95€/kg Carrots for 1€/per bag Zucchini 1,10€/kg Granny Smith apples 1,59€/kg Tomatoes 1,95€/kg You can also find great deals on really ripe fruit - up to half off!

11

MARCHÉ MOUFFETARD Located in one of Paris’ oldest street surrounded by old buildings, this market is perfect for people who enjoy good quality food. It’s more expensive than Marché d’Aligre, but worth it a visit. Going to this market is not only a matter of amazing quality (even if the prices are a little high), but the atmosphere is great, it’s almost like being dragged into a slice of Parisian life, with street musicians and all. There are also a lot of nice cafés around where to enjoy an espresso. Most fruit and vegetables sold here are organic or fair-trade, and you can find seasonal products in every stand. Located around rue Mouffetard there are a lot of speciality shops, such as boucheries specialized in fine meat and fromageries specialized in cheese. There are also a few popular places that sell fresh fish and mussels for acceptable prices.

* LA BANLIEUE There is a life outside of Paris, and it is usually only a couple of stops away on the train or RER. We’ve broken down this part of the guide into three categories: places you can relax, places to have fun, and where to see art and culture in the suburbs. The cultural scene in the suburbs has boomed in recent years and it would be a shame not to check it out.

BOIS DE VINCENNES Route de la Pyramide 75012, Paris Metro: Château de Vincennes RER A: Fontenay Sous Bois

46

RELAX * Technically in the 12th but it’s located right outside of Paris. It’s the largest park in the Paris area. You can have amazing picnics, take a ride on a small boat on a lake, rent bikes, and explore the Jardin d’Agronomie Tropicale. The Jardin is a semi-abandoned garden full of colonial structures dating back from the 1907 colonial exhibition in Paris. It is a rather strange place to visit that will teach you a lot about French history you won’t see on television.

* LA BANLIEUE

PASSERELLE DE BOULOGNE 52, Quai du Point du Jour, 92100, Boulogne-Billancourt Tuesday-Saturday 6pm-2am A restaurant and snack bar on the banks of the Seine. It’s the perfect place to relax on the weekend and feel like you’re hours away from the city. If you’re going on a weekend, make sure to place a reservation in advance. It’s also right next to Parc de l’Ile Saint Germain, where there’s a huge Jean Dubuffet sculpture worth seeing!

FORÊT DE FONTAINEBLEAU

CANAL DE L’OURCQ

RER R: Fontainebleau-Avon, 77300, Fontainebleau Opening hours depend on activity

211, Avenue Jean Jaurès, 75019, Paris. Opening hours depend on activity

An actual forest just outside of Paris. It’s huge and there’s tons of activities you can do there. It’s known for its natural rock formations that rock climbers enjoy during the weekend. And if you like hiking, you can take a train from Gare de Lyon that stops in the middle of the forest. It’s a secret stop, you can’t find it on any map but if you get a ticket to Forêt de Fontainebleau, at some point the train stops in the forest and a bunch of hikers get off. Do go with experienced hikers and be careful, it’s still a forest. In the forest you can find rock formations, many a tree and even sandy areas, it’s a unique site in Ile de France.

Start your stroll in Parc de la Villette and follow the canal, you’ll gradually see vegetation and street art take over the urban landscape during your walk. And if you don’t feel like walking, you can rent a boat for the day, no license required! With up to 6 friends you can spend an afternoon chilling on the canal, check out all the bars and bistros on the banks and have a chill day. Additionally, there’s a ton of exhibitions, concerts and galleries in Parc de la Villette at the beginning of the canal, and it’s a really nice place to relax in the summer. Best option is to get there early and make a day trip out of it!

FUN

LE 6B 6-10 Quai de Seine 93200, Saint-Denis Tram 1: Gare de Saint-Denis RER D: Saint-Denis

*

Le 6B is one of the most exciting place in Ile de France, even counting central Paris. This association took over abandoned buildings and turned them into bars, clubs, restaurants /cafÊs, artist studios, and an all around culture driven space that has been thriving in recent years. It’s huge and inhabited by artists, musicians, designers, architects, artisans, social workers... They organize some of the most stimulating events in the Paris area over the summer and all year round, and you simply have to go once because neither words or pictures do it justice.

ILE DES LOISIRS CERGY-PONTOISE Boulevard de l’Hautil - Rue des Etangs 95000, Cergy-Pontoise Mon-Fri: 12pm-7pm Sat-Sun: 10:30am-7pm

A beach, a giant water slide, tons of water sports, green areas, several lakes, a village suspended in trees... This place if perfect to relax and have fun in the summer, when Paris gets too hot. There’s another Ile des Loisirs in Vaire-Torcy and they also have a beach, but during the winter they organize skiing sessions!

PUCES DE SAINT-OUEN 132-140, Rue des Rosiers 93400, Saint-Ouen Sat: 9am-6pm Sun: 10am-6pm Mon: 10am-5pm Heaven on earth for treasure hunters. One of the oldest and largest flea markets in the world, it feels like it’s comprised of several tiny villages that exist in the same space. Some stores are indoors, others are outdoors, and some are in storage units... Here you can find antiques, vintage furniture, trinkets and also rare items you wouldn’t find anywhere else. The puces’ atmosphere is quite unique in France, and the small bars and cafés that have popped up in recent years will make you want to spend your entire weekends there. There’s more than 2000 shopkeepers and they are spread over 20 acres or so. You will find what you were not even looking for, that’s a promise.

DEAUVILLE 14000, Normandie. Train from Gare Saint-Lazare to Trouville-Deauville Deauville is not in the banlieue, it’s a coastal city to the west of Paris but it’s where most Parisians go when they need to escape Paris. It’s famous for its pier, casinos and American cinema festival. It’s basically a closest version of Cannes. It has a really quaint atmosphere, luxury boutiques, and casinos if you want to gamble your tuition away. You might even get to catch a glimpse of some American movie stars! The houses there are really cute and look like nothing else in France. It’s a popular destination for a day or weekend trip for many French people, and the beach is quite nice. It’s only two hours away via train and you don’t need to book tickets in advance, so you can go on a whim!

ART AND CULTURE GALERIE THADDAEUS ROPAC 69, Avenue du Général Leclerc 93500, Pantin Tram 1: Gare de Saint-Denis RER E: Pantin Tue-Sat: 10am-7pm

50

*

Galerie Thaddeus Ropac can be found in central Paris, Salzburg and London. Their most ambitious project so far is the gallery found in Pantin. They re purposed a 20th century ironworks factory into an exhibitions space, and they sometimes host talks, conferences, concerts and performances. The gallery is 5000 m² (54 000 ft²) and specializes in large scale works. It’s not far from La Villette and it is the best place to experience monumental art pieces. It contrasts fairly well with all the tiny galleries you can find in central Paris and brings something new to the table.

ABBAYE DE MAUBUISSON Avenue Richard de Tour 95310, Saint-Ouen L’aumône Mon: 1pm-6pm Wed-Fri: 1pm-6pm Sat-Sun: 2pm-6pm RER C: Saint-Ouen l’Aumône This Abbey dates back from the 12th century. It wasn’t always an exhibition space, but it became one in 2001. The exhibitions range from visual art, installations, videos, photography, sculptures, paintings, digital art and soundbased installations. The abbey structures its identity around three axes: architectural heritage, contemporary creation and natural heritage. In the end, it offers a really interesting alternative to white cubes.

AUVERS-SUR-OISE 95430, Val d’Oi se Train from Gare du Nord, Line H, to Auvers-sur-Oise Also called the Village des Peintres, Auvers-sur-Oise is a small remote village that would be totally unknown, had it not been a source of inspirations for Van Gogh, Cézanne, Pissaro, and other impressionists. You can even visit Van Gogh’s last residence before he died. He lived in more than 30 places over his lifetime but this inn is the only location that remained untouched. The restaurant downstairs of Maison Van Gogh is still open and you can come have food you will never find in cities: traditional and local recipes with ingredients fresher than in Paris. There’s also an absinthe museum in Auvers-sur-Oise, whose peculiar green hue can be found in many of Van Gogh’s paintings. To finish off your trip, why not head to Château d’Auverssur-Oise? This 17th century castle is obviously dedicated to Impressionism but it also celebrates Paris’ cabaret culture and the city’s transformation by Haussmann during the 19th century.

GALERIA CONTINUA LES MOULINS 46, Rue de la Ferté Gaucher 77169, Boissy-Le-Châtel Wed-Sun: 12pm-6pm Train from Gare de l’Est, Line P, Boissy le Châtel Galleria Continua can be found in Italy, China, Cuba and France. They run their exhibitions according to seasons and make good use of the 10 000 m² of usable space. They’re often inviting international artists to show their work in the monumental space, and they specialize in larger installations. It’s a bit further than other galleries but they’re getting a lot of traction, and you should definitely check the place out!

CASTLES CHÂTEAU DE CHAMBORD 41250, Chambord Train from Gare de l’Est to Blois-Chambord then a shuttle between April and October Mon-Sun: 9am-6pm

52

*

Not technically in Ile de France but we added Chambord because it truly is a must see. What’s more French than a castle? Maybe garlic and bread but that’s besides the point. Château de Chambord is a 16th century massive castle near the center of France. This beautiful Renaissance structure was inhabited by Kings across centuries, and now it’s open to the public since the French beheaded them all. Make sure you have enough time to schedule in the horse carriage tour! They commercialize their own honey, pâté, and trinkets made out of deer antlers. They’ll even start selling their own wine starting 2019. There’s a ton of deer frolicking around the domain all year round and they’re quite used to human presence. Eat your heart out, Versailles.

These castles are all in la banlieue, we promise and you can use your student imagine R metro pass to get to all of them without added charges.

DOMAINE DE CHAMAR ANDE 38, Rue du Commandant Maurice Arnoux, 91730, Chamarande Mon-Sun: 9am-7pm RER C: Chamarande

CHÂTEAU DE CHANTILLY 60500, Chantilly Mon-Sun: 10am-6pm RER D: Chantilly-Grouvieux or train from Gare du Nord to Chantilly-Grouvieux This 19th century castle located north of Paris owns the second largest collection of classical paintings in France, after the Louvre. They often organize all sorts of exhibitions and they have a horse museum: the art of the horse and the horse in art. There are horse shows all year round and they also have kangaroos for some reason, Ice the albino kangaroo is especially popular. You can have a meal outside in the park, in their salon de thé, and restaurant.

This castle dates back to the 16th century, and has recently been transformed into an exhibition space. Their peculiarity is their focus on eco conscious art practices and the relationship between nature and art making. They thus hold several exhibitions outside and you can randomly walk past a sculpture in the middle of a lake while you’re strolling through the large estate. During the summer, they also have an outdoor cinema and they organize concerts, talks and activities. They focus on contemporary art and it never clashes with the classical architecture of the castle itself. Again, this is another interesting alternative to white cubes. The park itself is huge, offers lots of amenities for picnics and it’s so big it never feels crowded, which is not something you find easily in Paris!

CHÂTEAU DE FONTAINEBLEAU 77300, Fontainebleau Mon-Sun: 9:30am-6pm Train from Gare de Lyon, Line R, Fontainebleau-Avon and a bus, Line 1, Château Only an hour away from Paris, every year they host the Festival de l’Histoire de l’Art, centered on a specific theme and with a guest country. There’s a museum dedicated to Napoléon 1 and a gallery that hosts various exhibitions, usually on design and architecture. The castle dates back from the 16th century, when King François 1 built his new summer house. Last royalty seen there was Lana Del Rey when she filmed the Born to Die music video.
