Summer in Paris The Summer Program at Paris College of Art offers an exciting set of courses with a modern edge in the historically and artistically rich city of Paris. In these 2-week or 4-week courses, introductory through advanced level students will explore art, design, business, culture and language.

General Information An international faculty comprised of professional artists and designers will guide students through the colorful streets and neighborhoods of Paris. Through field trips to museums, studios, boutiques, and design organizations, students will take advantage of the abundant resources the city has to offer; Paris will serve as both a subject matter and a source of inspiration. Studio work, lectures, and independent research projects will allow students to develop new skills, refine their understanding of art and design, and create portfolio pieces for college or graduate school admissions. Areas of study include Art History, Critical Studies, Communication Design, Design Management, Fashion Design, Fine Arts, French Language, Illustration, and Photography. All courses, with the exception of French language courses, are taught in English. As all courses are taught intensively (five days a week, from 9am to 4 or 5pm), only one class may be taken at a time. Some undergraduate and adult level courses will require independent student research and participation in group projects. These challenging assignments will allow students to gain an enhanced personal creative identity. Take advantage of our early bird rate! Register before January 15, 2014 and receive a 15% discount!

Art History

Paris Through its Museums and Artistic Sites This course is designed to introduce the student to the artistic and historical tradition of cosmopolitan Paris. During the course the rich cultural and historical heritage of Paris, as it has come down to us from the Middle Ages to the present day, will be explored through a dynamic program of venturing into the city to learn about its cultural resources. Social, political and economic changes have been paralleled by scientific, philosophical and artistic developments. For centuries there has been a passion for change and renewal, most clearly of all in the visual arts. Students will learn to read with their eyes and experience works of art in person, analyzing various complex artworks; visiting historic sites, monuments and museums; and considering the city’s remarkable urban development and contributions to architecture and design.

June 30th to July 12th

The focus will be on several historically organized sections: the development of Romanesque and Gothic art in France; the royal and imperial patrimony of the 19th centuries; the achievements of the Parisian avant-gardes from the end of the 19th century until the Second World War; and, finally, postmodern Paris.

Paris, an Ecosystem on the Cutting Edge This course explores the past and present of Paris as a creative environment. It is not exactly an art history class, though it will deal with the history of art. Nor is it simply a class about Paris and its past, but it is that as well, using books, films, art works and walking tours as its supports. Likewise, it is and is not a class dealing with philosophical questions on the nature of the contemporary in art and the cutting edge envisioned by avant-garde past, a class dealing with the nature of the new and the revolutionary with respect to the context of their emergence. Above all, however, this is a class devoted to rethinking the way we think about art making in environmental terms. Challenging notions of the disembodied creative genius, we will use theoretical works by thinkers like Benjamin, Latour, Bennett and Harman to explore the ways in which art works can be thought of as the products of multitudes of actants, human and nonhuman.

Using critical texts by Clark, Merlou, Ponty, Casey and others we will rethink the nature of embodiment and place, keeping in mind contemporary art practices and trends. Via these analyses we will develop an ecological account of the nature of artistic production and an ecological approach to art criticism.

Observed and Abstracted Observed and Abstracted is a two-week course that will explore the formal and conceptual potential of abstract imagery. Using painting and collage processes, students will learn to construct a visual vocabulary by evolving representational sources into an abstract voice. Upon completion of this course, students will have a greater understanding of how to conceptually approach, produce, and critique abstraction. Visits to museums and cultural destinations will influence discussions regarding the history of abstraction and painting theory. The first week of the class, will be dedicated to a series of drawing, collage and painting exercises focusing on translating observed subjects into an abstract, formal language. This process will culminate during the second week in a series of small works that demonstrate an understanding of pictorial dynamics and evolved subject matter.

June 30th to July 12th

Understanding how to invent, implement a personal language is a topic that continues to be emphasized in art education and is a necessary skill for artists today. This course will prepare students to articulately engage conversations regarding abstract painting and its contribution to contemporary art.

The Art of Observation This course provides an introduction to the theoretical and experiential nature of museum learning. Students will explore the relationship between viewer and works of art, filtered through the lens of their own experiences in the course. A discussion of art objects and the ways we see, interpret and understand them is at the core of this investigation. We will begin with the theoretical underpinnings of aesthetic experience. Students will then be introduced to the cognitive and affective nature of arts learning. Throughout the course we will embark on in depth discussions about different artworks and the way we understand them by visiting museums throughout Paris. The purpose of the course is to provide students with more and deeper strategies for using museums as a source of ideas and inspiration for their own creative work. In this course, students will develop confidence establishing significant personal relationships with works of art.

July 15th to July 25th

They will also become familiar with a series of philosophical issues and practical approaches to drawing meaning from objects. Slow looking, guided by object and inquiry based teaching techniques form the foundation of this course. Assignments include trips to museums, research and analysis based on works of art as primary sources through drawing, photography and written reflections. Through course readings, students will be introduced to current research and writing in the field of art and aesthetic education. Participation in group discussions both in the galleries and the classroom is essential to the success of the course.

Drawing in Paris + French Drawing is the foundation of visual art. Most visual artists, designers, illustrators, architects, fashion designers, etc., still start their creative process with drawing. It is the creative seed, the beginning of all that follows. It is based on the human activity of the movement of the hand, eye and mind, each stimulating each other in the evolution of visual and conceptual ideas. Visual arts students need to learn the language of drawing. In the process they will learn how to see and how to communicate through drawing. This intensive course will teach them the basics of the visual language: line, form, composition, light & shadow, gesture, etc., while at the same time teaching them how to see and how to explore and develop their own personal vision. We will experiment with many different materials, discover the nature and possibilities of each, and investigate many conventional and unconventional ways of seeing.
