Sun protection solution - Customized tensile structure solution not only block harmful UV rays but also lower surface temperature of the play equipment as well as the play area underneath. Children can have more time to enjoy their activities, to rest for their cool down, and also to socialize under the shade. Shading also increases the traffic of the play area which will then maximize the value of playground investment as a result.

ELLERSLIE TRAIN STATION PEDESTRIAN CANOPIES AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND The challenge – complex design and restricted time for implementation To enhance Auckland’s rail network, train stations throughout the city are being upgraded to make train travel more pleasant for passengers. Ellerslie train station is an important stop within the network, serving thousands of local residents and workers. As part of the station’s upgrade, Structurflex was commissioned to design and install canopies for a pedestrian overbridge in 2009 and additional canopies for a new overbridge and stairwell in 2012. The design aspect of the project was geometrically complex, involving sloping ramps and connections to existing structures. During the installation phase, logistical and safety challenges included working alongside and above a busy six-lane motorway, operational railway lines and the intermittent closure of access roads.
The solution – thorough 3D modelling and orchestrated implementation The Stucturflex design team used CAD and 3D modelling to speed the design process, maximise the aesthetic appeal of the canopies and ensure an error-free outcome. A detailed installation plan was developed, in consultation with local authorities, to allow swift and efficient construction during off-peak travel periods. Feedback from the client and train commuters has been consistently positive.

WESTLAKE GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS FACILITY AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND The challenge – create a continuous canopy for netball and tennis courts on difficult ground conditions, without disrupting the school’s academic calendar Westlake Girls High School on Auckland’s North Shore has a reputation for high achievement. With a strategic focus on encouraging personal best, the school wanted to enable increased use of their netball and tennis courts by adding an all-weather canopy. The vision called for full light between each netball court with more shade for on-court players. In any school environment, student safety and continuity of learning are paramount. A well-managed, short construction period was essential. The project was also challenged by unusually bad weather and the discovery of inconsistent ground conditions.
Our solution – innovative design concepts, disciplined execution and collaborative problem-solving Structurflex was responsible for all structural engineering, as well as the supply, fabrication and installation of all components. Working with architects Creative Spaces, Structurflex developed fabric connection details that satisfied the architect’s vision while ensuring a weathertight solution. This included the design and manufacture of a custom guttering system. The architect’s vision for conveying intense natural light between the courts was effectively achieved by combining PVC coated membrane with ETFE foil. The contrast between translucency characteristics of the materials ensures a pattern of comfortable shading and full natural light. Controlled, systematic and efficient implementation enabled Structurflex to meet the short construction timeframe. Collaborating with ASPEC Construction, the main contractor, Structurflex engineers were able to resolve ground condition challenges to the foundations without adjusting the project completion date. The new sporting venue has been highly praised by students, visiting players, teachers, parents, the local community and even motorists on the adjacent motorway. Even more importantly, with the courts in use day and night in any weather, more people are rediscovering their personal best. IAA Outstanding Achievement Award – 2013

Napkin sketches transformed into stylish sun shade tITLE Indian Wells Tennis Garden Pavilion Description Shade canopy for stadium Location Palm Springs, California, USA COMPLETED IN 2012 FABRIC Area 20,000f² FABRIC TYPE PVC – Ferrari 1202 T2 Architect/Client

INDIAN WELLS Palm Springs, California USA The challenge – transform hand-drawn concepts into affordable reality Indian Wells Tennis Garden is a full-service tennis club with the third-largest tennis stadium in the world. Every year it hosts the BNP Paribas Open, the world’s fifth-largest professional tournament. The club’s desert position near Palm Springs means that shade is a valuable resource – the sun shines more than 350 days a year here. The most significant challenge for Structurflex was to transform three conceptual sketches into a shade structure that was true to the architect’s vision and the owner’s requirements. We produced preliminary engineering and pricing for all three; we also developed another three concepts of our own. All concepts were presented as photo-realistic renderings within two weeks of the initial brief. Other challenges included the owner’s desire for a light structure that would have little impact on the site, plus the need to complete installation in time for the annual tennis tournament.
The solution – elegant structure, clean span tensile membrane that enhances the whole environment Structurflex was engaged to produce final engineering documents for the agreed design, coordinate with the general contractor and sub-trades, supply all structural steel, and fabricate and install the membrane. To avoid complex trusses that would detract from the clean simplicity of the long spans, we opted to use single tube sections for support. We also employed ETFE caps that were slightly raised above the rings, to allow heat to rise and escape. The membrane was patterned to be aesthetically pleasing. The resulting shade canopy was completed on time and has received rave reviews from the owner, the architect, the public and the media.
