ABOUT THE BOARD OF OFFICERS ROOM A NOTE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR It has been such a pleasure programming our recital series in the Board of Officers Room, with exquisite recitalists and performers that could not have been more positive about this newly reopened space and its excellent acoustics. Now in its third season, we introduce the timeless tradition of recitation to the series, with Charlotte Rampling performing the confessional poetry of Sylvia Plath in counterpoint to Benjamin Britten's solo cello works performed by Sonia Wieder-Atherton. Building on our commitment to the art form that unites song and poetry, we welcome the supremely expressive tenor Ian Bostridge exploring themes of the Great War and a return visit from today's foremost interpreter of Lieder, the great Christian Gerhaher, who inaugurated the reopening of the space. I first came across the formidable musicianship of Alina Ibragimova at the 2009 Manchester International Festival. She is one of the great interpreters of the most cherished works for violin, J.S. Bach's solo works. Together with an all-Schumann program by the gifted pianist David Fray, the New York premiere of Rushes composed by New York's very own alchemist Michael Gordon, and our partnership with the Metropolitan Opera's Lindemann Young Artist Development Program, I hope you appreciate our exploration into the many facets of what the recital can offer. Alex Poots Artistic Director, Park Avenue Armory
“The restoration of the Park Avenue Armory seems destined to set a new standard, not so much for its scale, but for its level of respect and imagination.” – The New York Times The Board of Officers Room is one of the most important historic rooms in America and one of the few remaining interiors by Herter Brothers. After decades of progressive damage and neglect, the room completed a revitalization in 2013 by the architecture team at Herzog & de Meuron and executive architects Platt Byard Dovell White Architects to transform the space into a state-of-the- art salon for intimate performances and other contemporary art programing. The Board of Officers Room is the third period room at the Armory completed (out of 18) and represents the full range of design tools utilized by the team including the removal of accumulated layers on the surfaces, the addition of contemporary lighting to the 1897 chandeliers, new interpretations of the stencil patterns on areas of loss, the addition of metallic finishes on new materials, new programming infrastructure, and custom designed furniture.
The room’s restoration is part of an ongoing $200-million transformation, which is guided by the understanding that the Armory’s rich history and the patina of time are essential to its character. A defining component of the design process for the period rooms is the close collaboration between architect and artisan. Highly skilled craftspeople working in wood, paint, plaster, and metals were employed in the creation of the building’s original interiors and the expertise – and hand – of similar artisans has been drawn upon for the renovation work throughout.
The renovation of the Board of Officers Room was made possible through the generosity of The Thompson Family Foundation. Cover photo by Mark Adams.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM Piano Sonata in E minor, D. 566 (1817) It is hard to say exactly how many sonatas Schubert composed, because there are many incomplete works and in some cases it is unclear whether certain self-standing movements were intended to be part of a sonata. The first work on tonight’s program is a case in point: the original manuscript contains a scherzo in a different key than the first two movements, and it is doubtful whether it belongs with them. Conversely, there is a self-standing rondo in E major in another manuscript that may or may not have been intended as the finale of the present sonata. In any case, the two movements we are going to hear seem to be entirely self-sufficient; in fact, they are in many ways similar to Beethoven’s two-movement sonata Op. 90 (also in E minor, written in 1814). The first movement, “Moderato,” opens on a somber note. Its dramatic tensions are later sublimated in the gentler second and third themes, although they resurface during the development section. The second movement is a rondo in E major (just like Beethoven’s corresponding movement from Op. 90). Its achingly beautiful main theme alternates with some more agitated episodes, before it returns for the last time, followed by a brief, magical coda. Piano Sonata in A minor, D. 784, Op. 143 (1823) The second of the three piano sonatas Schubert wrote in the key of A minor, D. 784 is, without a doubt, one of his most astonishing creations. It was written after Schubert’s first serious bout with syphilis, and many commentators have attributed the grim tone of the work to the composer’s physical condition. The first movement’s textures are exceptionally sparse: the melody frequently moves in unison, or in block-like chords, but the very simplicity of the writing conveys extreme dramatic power. And when a lyrical, flowing melody is presented in this fashion, the effect is indescribable. The main melody of the second movement has something uncannily Brahmsian about it: its quiet dignity and wide intervallic leaps must have been an influence on the later composer. However, Schubert develops the melody in his own way, adding a second idea in triplet motion and then combining the two ideas. Formally, the movement does not conform to any of the classical patterns: the theme is never fully recapitulated in the main key except as a brief recall at the very end, after a surprising passage in a remote key. The finale is a whirlwind “Allegro vivace,” in which the two hands seem to be constantly chasing one another. 2
A powerful chordal material and a lilting waltz melody broaden the emotional range of the movement, which ends quite dramatically, with thundering octaves in both hands. Piano Sonata in G major, D. 894, Op. 78 (1826) The Viennese publisher Carl Haslinger called the first movement of Schubert’s Sonata in G major a “fantasy” in his edition, and even though the movement observes regular sonata form, there is definitely something fantasy-like, indeed improvisatory, about it. The very way it begins, with some long-held G-major chords that seem reluctant to move on, represents a dreamy state of mind; instead of getting on with the regular business of sonata form, Schubert chooses to linger on the sonorous triads as long as possible, reveling in their sensual beauty. This meditative opening eventually gives way to a second theme in the rhythm of a folk dance and a third theme that has the agility and grace of Schubert’s impromptus. These three themes are almost like three separate worlds, but Schubert weaves two of them together in the development section where the opening theme takes on a dark, dramatic character, immediately contrasted by the second idea which holds out the promise of a beautiful, idyllic world. The end of the recapitulation returns to the beautiful, static chords with which the movement began. Like the middle part of the first movement, the subsequent “Andante” unites two very different moods. The intensely lyrical opening melody is swept aside by a stormy second idea in the minor mode. The first melody returns with lavish ornaments added, as does the stormy episode, before a final recapitulation of the lyrical theme closes the movement in a gentle mood. The third movement is a robust minuet in B minor, the serious and dramatic key of the Unfinished Symphony. The trio, in B major, brings back the dream world of the second movement; it is played in triple pianissimo almost all the way through. The last movement is a Rondo that conjures up merry dance parties in the Austrian countryside. In the middle of a string of light-hearted tunes, however, there is a central episode where some dark clouds gather on the horizon. A moment of typically Schubertian poignancy occurs when this minormode melody reappears in an ethereal-sounding major key. The dance fantasy then returns, but the ending, surprisingly, is not as exuberant as one might expect; rather, it finds its way back to the meditative repeated chords that made the first movement of the sonata so memorable. © 2015 by Peter Laki

ABOUT THE ARMORY
NEXT AT THE ARMORY
Part American palace, part industrial shed, Park Avenue Armory is dedicated to supporting unconventional works in the visual and performing arts that need non-traditional spaces for their full realization, enabling artists to create and audiences to consume epic and adventurous presentations that can not be mounted elsewhere in New York City. In its first eight years, the Armory opened its doors to visionary artists, directors, and impresarios who provided extraordinary experiences in a range of art forms. Such was its impact that in December 2011, The New York Times noted, “Park Avenue Armory … has arrived as the most important new cultural institution in New York City.”
RUSHES ENSEMBLE
Built between 1877 and 1881, Park Avenue Armory has been hailed as containing “the single most important collection of nineteenth century interiors to survive intact in one building” by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission. The 55,000-square-foot Wade Thompson Drill Hall, with an 80-foot-high barrel vaulted roof, is one of the largest unobstructed spaces in New York City. The Armory’s magnificent reception rooms were designed by leaders of the American Aesthetic Movement, among them Louis Comfort Tiffany, Stanford White, Candace Wheeler, and Herter Brothers. The building is currently undergoing a $210-million renovation designed by Herzog & de Meuron as assisted by Platt Byard Dovell White, as Architects of Record.
With one of the most unorthodox ensembles imaginable, New York City-based Michael Gordon, composer and founder of the iconic Bang on a Can collective, offers Rushes, a sonic meditation for seven bassoons in its New York City premiere. Best known for music driven by rhythmic intensity and power, Gordon explores interweaving textures and the timbre of a surplus of double reeds to form a steadily pulsating, unbroken wall of woodwind sound.

“We always project into the future or reflect in the past, but we are so little in the present.” —Marina Abramović Igor Levit, who made his impressive North American recital debut at the Armory in 2014, interprets Bach’s towering keyboard masterpiece Goldberg Variations in an installation created by seminal artist Marina Abramović. Having redefined what performance art is for nearly 40 years, she now reimagines the concert-going experience by creating a concentrated durational work that reflects upon music, time, space, emptiness, and luminosity, with the audience becoming a part of the work to connect with themselves and with the present — the elusive moment of the here and now.

“[Gerhaher’s recent recitals] have been nothing short of sublime… prov[ing] once again that he ranks as today’s peerless singer of lieder.” —The Telegraph (UK) While he has triumphed in international opera and oratorio appearances, Christian Gerhaher is also today’s foremost interpreter of Lieder, with his vocal artistry profoundly conveying the poetry and emotional seed of each song. After inaugurating the reopening of the Board of Officers Room in 2013, the burnished baritone returns with his longstanding recital partner Gerold Huber for a program that highlights the Viennese peak of the art song tradition.
