ABOUT THE BOARD OF OFFICERS ROOM A NOTE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR It has been such a pleasure programming our recital series in the Board of Officers Room, with exquisite recitalists and performers that could not have been more positive about this newly reopened space and its excellent acoustics. Now in its third season, we introduce the timeless tradition of recitation to the series, with Charlotte Rampling performing the confessional poetry of Sylvia Plath in counterpoint to Benjamin Britten's solo cello works performed by Sonia Wieder-Atherton. Building on our commitment to the art form that unites song and poetry, we welcome the supremely expressive tenor Ian Bostridge exploring themes of the Great War and a return visit from today's foremost interpreter of Lieder, the great Christian Gerhaher, who inaugurated the reopening of the space. I first came across the formidable musicianship of Alina Ibragimova at the 2009 Manchester International Festival. She is one of the great interpreters of the most cherished works for violin, J.S. Bach's solo works. Together with an all-Schumann program by the gifted pianist David Fray, the New York premiere of Rushes composed by New York's very own alchemist Michael Gordon, and our partnership with the Metropolitan Opera's Lindemann Young Artist Development Program, I hope you appreciate our exploration into the many facets of what the recital can offer. Alex Poots Artistic Director, Park Avenue Armory

“The restoration of the Park Avenue Armory seems destined to set a new standard, not so much for its scale, but for its level of respect and imagination.” – The New York Times The Board of Officers Room is one of the most important historic rooms in America and one of the few remaining interiors by Herter Brothers. After decades of progressive damage and neglect, the room completed a revitalization in 2013 by the architecture team at Herzog & de Meuron and executive architects Platt Byard Dovell White Architects to transform the space into a state-of-the- art salon for intimate performances and other contemporary art programing. The Board of Officers Room is the third period room at the Armory completed (out of 18) and represents the full range of design tools utilized by the team including the removal of accumulated layers on the surfaces, the addition of contemporary lighting to the 1897 chandeliers, new interpretations of the stencil patterns on areas of loss, the addition of metallic finishes on new materials, new programming infrastructure, and custom designed furniture.

The room’s restoration is part of an ongoing $200-million transformation, which is guided by the understanding that the Armory’s rich history and the patina of time are essential to its character. A defining component of the design process for the period rooms is the close collaboration between architect and artisan. Highly skilled craftspeople working in wood, paint, plaster, and metals were employed in the creation of the building’s original interiors and the expertise – and hand – of similar artisans has been drawn upon for the renovation work throughout.

The renovation of the Board of Officers Room was made possible through the generosity of The Thompson Family Foundation. Cover photo by Mark Adams.

ABOUT THE WORK & COMPOSER Years ago I pursed my lips and blew into a bassoon, and felt the entire instrument buzz as I droned on the very bottom note, a B-flat. I held the long conical piece of wood in my hands with admiration—it was covered with what looked like a New York City subway map of shiny metal keys running every which way. The bassoon had heft and it was primal—the two reeds vibrating against each other produced a poignant and mournful sound. It all came back to me on a cold sunny Thursday in January 2011. Five bassoonists set up in my living room. Along with 25 other bassoonists from far and wide, they had banded together and asked me to write a new piece. I’m not sure any of them imagined that my response would be an hour-long work for seven bassoons. In earlier conversations with Dana Jessen, the American bassoonist who initiated this project, I had asked to look at all the influential bassoon music written in the 20th century. Dana showed up with just a small pile of music. I felt a little bit like Magellan. I knew there were worlds to find if I could just set sail. During that Thursday afternoon, we explored a myriad of sounds and my living room was filled with an exquisite buzzing of dark tones. I was particularly drawn to the short percussive attacks by all the bassoons in counterpoint with each other. The texture had the aural effect of a Seurat painting, and I began to write for the instruments as if they were participants in an extreme sport—a non-stop barrage of ethereal rapid-fire points of sound that seamlessly shifted from one instrument to the next. This architectural movement of sound, which runs throughout the entire piece of music, is a technique that I first used in Timber, a percussion work for six amplified simantras. I imagined entering these waves of moving sound and embarking on a journey through a stark monochromatic landscape that slowly revealed its hidden colors.

Michael Gordon’s music merges subtle rhythmic invention with incredible power embodying, in the words of The New Yorker's Alex Ross, “the fury of punk rock, the nervous brilliance of free jazz, and the intransigence of classical modernism.” Over the past 25 years, Gordon has produced a strikingly diverse body of work, ranging from large-scale pieces for highenergy ensembles to major orchestral commissions to works conceived specifically for the recording studio. Transcending categorization, this music represents the collision of mysterious introspection and brutal directness. His orchestral and chamber works include Rewriting Beethoven's Seventh Symphony, Sunshine of Your Love, Potassium, Industry, The Sad Park, and Trance, among others. Works for theater and opera include What to Wear, Acquanetta, Lost Objects, and Van Gogh. He has also had numerous collaborations with artists in other media, most frequently with filmmaker Bill Morrison and Ridge Theater. Gordon has been commissioned by Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, the BBC Proms, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Settembre Musica, the Holland Music Festival, the Dresden Festival, and the Sydney 2000 Olympic Arts Festival, among others. The recipient of multiple awards and grants, he has been honored by the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Foundation for Contemporary Performance Arts, and the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Born in Miami Beach in 1956, Gordon holds a bachelor of arts from New York University and a master’s in music from the Yale School of Music. He is co-founder and co-artistic director of New York's legendary music collective Bang On a Can. His music is published by Red Poppy Music (ASCAP) and is distributed worldwide by G. Schirmer, Inc.

The score, with tens of thousands of notes, looks a bit like an Escher drawing or a very long weaving pattern for a loom. In June 2012, in Edisto Island, South Carolina, I met with the seven bassoonists of the newly formed Rushes Ensemble. As we rehearsed, I thought that the piece had become like the thick river winding its way through the marshes and reedy growth surrounding us. I had already settled on the name Rushes, both for its reference to the reeds and to capture the mental state it produced. Now, with the seven bassoonists fully immersed in the music, I felt the primordial flow of sound harkening back to the very first reeds. —Michael Gordon 2

ABOUT THE ARMORY Part American palace, part industrial shed, Park Avenue Armory is dedicated to supporting unconventional works in the visual and performing arts that need non-traditional spaces for their full realization, enabling artists to create and audiences to consume epic and adventurous presentations that can not be mounted elsewhere in New York City. In its first eight years, the Armory opened its doors to visionary artists, directors, and impresarios who provided extraordinary experiences in a range of art forms. Such was its impact that in December 2011, The New York Times noted, “Park Avenue Armory … has arrived as the most important new cultural institution in New York City.” Built between 1877 and 1881, Park Avenue Armory has been hailed as containing “the single most important collection of nineteenth century interiors to survive intact in one building” by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission. The 55,000-square-foot Wade Thompson Drill Hall, with an 80-foot-high barrel vaulted roof, is one of the largest unobstructed spaces in New York City. The Armory’s magnificent reception rooms were designed by leaders of the American Aesthetic Movement, among them Louis Comfort Tiffany, Stanford White, Candace Wheeler, and Herter Brothers. The building is currently undergoing a $210-million renovation designed by Herzog & de Meuron as assisted by Platt Byard Dovell White, as Architects of Record.

NEXT AT THE ARMORY CHRISTIAN GERHAHER, baritone GEROLD HUBER, piano tuesday, november 10

“[Gerhaher’s recent recitals] have been nothing short of sublime… prov[ing] once again that he ranks as today’s peerless singer of lieder.” —The Telegraph (UK) While he has triumphed in international opera and oratorio appearances, Christian Gerhaher is also today’s foremost interpreter of Lieder, with his vocal artistry profoundly conveying the poetry and emotional seed of each song. After inaugurating the reopening of the Board of Officers Room in 2013, the burnished baritone returns with his longstanding recital partner Gerold Huber for a program that highlights the Viennese peak of the art song tradition.

GOLDBERG '

IGOR LEVIT, MARINA ABRAMOVIC

december 7–19

“We always project into the future or reflect in the past, but we are so little in the present.” —Marina Abramović Igor Levit, who made his impressive North American recital debut at the Armory in 2014, interprets Bach’s towering keyboard masterpiece Goldberg Variations in an installation created by seminal artist Marina Abramović. Having redefined what performance art is for nearly 40 years, she now reimagines the concert-going experience by creating a concentrated durational work that reflects upon music, time, space, emptiness, and luminosity, with the audience becoming a part of the work to connect with themselves and with the present — the elusive moment of the here and now.
