Inspiring excellence is also integral to the Francis Parker School Summer Program — now in its 54th year. From junior kindergarten through grade 12, Parker’s Summer Program offers an array of learning opportunities in the classroom and beyond. In the Lower, Middle, and Upper Schools, the focus remains on enrichment and advancement, keeping the student’s brain engaged during the summer months. For all who have visited or spent time on the Lower School campus located in Mission Hills, it is clear that this is a magical place. For summer 2013, long-standing courses and activities are being offered once again as well as some new courses including Chinese, LegoSÂŽ on the Green Planet, and two art courses: Live Like the Artists and Recycled Art & Wooden Creations. For the first time, the Summer Program presents a beginning conversational Spanish course for adults, taught by Sra. Liliana Batelman. At the Junior and Senior Kindergarten levels, the daylong Little Explorers returns. For 1st through 5th grade students, several JumpStart classes are offered, along with a three-course rotation each Session. Student numbers will be kept small for all classes to ensure the best possible learning and socializing environments. The long-running Summer Fun afternoon program typically takes children off-campus for fun, safe, ageappropriate activities. The younger kids may enjoy a variety of beach and aquatic adventures, games and crafts â&#x20AC;&#x201D; all supervised closely by veteran Parker staff. Older students (grades 3-5) may head for the beach as well, or embark on a number of field trips to local attractions like Soak City, Solid Rock Gym, Boomers and other destination points in and around San Diego. Regardless of age or grade level, the emphasis of the Summer Fun program is to have fun and learn more about the many features and destination points that give San Diego its unique character.

Little Explorers–Senior Kindergarten

Little Explorers–Junior Kindergarten

Instructors: Laurie Stall and Lindsay Gross ’07 (June 24–July 12) Nicole Mercuriali and Jordan Thomas (July 15–August 2) This activities-based, closely-supervised program is suitable for rising Senior Kindergartners. Positive social interaction and cooperative group play is essential to a fun and nurturing environment. Each week of the threeweek program, children experience a complete fun-filled day. Classes feature a circle time that includes literacy, math, science, art and activities designed to strengthen motor skills.

Instructors: Becki Thompson and Katelin Beard (June 24–July 12) Kym Farkas and Katelin Beard (July 15–August 2) This activities-based, closely-supervised program is appropriate for rising Junior and Senior Kindergarten students. Students experience fun-filled days of literacy learning, mathematics, science, art, cooking and activities designed to strengthen motor skills. Little Explorers provides a jump-start to Junior Kindergarten using a hands-on approach. Week #1 includes a variety of daily field trips to local destinations, preceded by a circle time/reading/lesson. Weeks #2 and #3 are designated as swim weeks with each morning also offering a theme-based, group craft activity. The swimming lessons are conducted at nearby Noonan Pool and run Monday– Thursday of both weeks. A school-prepared lunch is included daily and served family-style. Nutritional snacks will also be provided. Afternoon activities may include physical education, thematic crafts, story time, or free-choice time. Reading & Writing Workshop Instructors: Sara Knox and Chris Watson This course is designed for rising 4th and 5th grade students who are interested in diving deeper into all things literacy. Learning activities include in-depth studies of favorite authors, strategies and habits for reading and understanding nonfiction, and an exploration of fantasy as a reading genre. Students also publish a favorite writing piece by the end of the course. It’s bound to be a blast, so please join us for a summer of fun!

New! Chinese Instructor: Ran Sophia Dalton Ni Hao! The Chinese summer program is designed for students seeking to increase their language skills and cultural understanding while enjoying their summer. Students will be exposed to both the language and Chinese culture daily. Hands-on activities, such as games, singing, dancing, role-playing, and realia are used to practice vocabulary and build sentences. In addition, students create culture and language-related projects through technology. Students also enjoy cultural activities, such as traditional Chinese kids’ games, food preparation, paper-cutting, Chinese calligraphy, and experiential learning on culturally-relevant field trips. new! Live Like the Artists Instructor: April McBride Explore, create, cook and eat! Come join an artistic experience with students creating unique works of art and their own culinary creations. Students immerse themselves in the lives of the artists studied. Activities include an introduction to famous artists, use of new and familiar art mediums, learning to cook and more. Students discover that everything around them can serve as inspiration for the artist. NEW! Recycled Art & Wooden Creations Instructor: Margo Sharpe Young artists explore the importance of recycling and reusing objects in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere. Students will be free to create without the typical time constraints. They create collaborative and individual art, 2D and 3D wood projects in the style of famous artists and cutting-edge “recycle artists.” This course provides students the opportunity to reuse everyday objects and turn them into art! Technology, Art & Guitar (TAG!) Instructors: Brigid Williams, April McBride, Darleen Herriman A fun morning rotation of classes! The Technology segment is taught by Brigid Williams. Students learn to storyboard, shoot and edit digital media while creating a movie through the use of cameras and iMovie. (This hands-on learning experience will be adapted to grade levels as appropriate.) Each student receives a DVD of the movie he or she produces. The Art component is led by April McBride and features a curriculum that allows students to explore and create original works of art. Students experiment with paint, 3D sculpture, stamps, print making, clay, papier-maché, charcoal and oil pastels. The Guitar class introduces beginners to this versatile instrument and is instructed by Darleen Herriman. Acoustic guitars will be provided and students learn to play a variety of familiar songs. Science

Destination: Space Camp! Instructors: Jennifer Hayman and John Hulsey Ever wondered what it would be like to be an astronaut? This course provides that opportunity! Here’s how the course is laid out: Week #1: In the classroom, students learn about the history of space exploration, perform some amazing space-related experiments, and prepare for their trip to Space Camp. One class day will be spent at the Air and Space Museum in Balboa Park. Week #2: Six days at Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama! Students fly from San Diego to Huntsville for six closelysupervised, action-packed days of experiential learning. Activities include simulated space missions, building robotics and much more. Students experience first-hand what it is like to be an astronaut. Week #3: Back at the Lower School, students create an iMovie complete with video and photos of their Space Camp experiences. The course concludes on Friday of the week with a student-generated movie premiere for family and friends! Every effort should be made to enroll before April 15, 2013, to guarantee the best possible airfares and secure places at Space Camp. Afternoon Activity

Summer Fun!

Instructor: Roberta Imbimbo Girls and boys will use Lego® building skills to conceive ideas that would keep our earth green and clean. Students research problems the earth is encountering, highlighted by a visit to a local landfill. A trip to Legoland® will also take place. In class, students explore simple machines to help build creations that could help keep the earth healthy. Student projects will be shared in the final week with friends and families.

Director: David Glassey & Staff Parker’s long-standing Summer Fun! program provides a great range of afternoon activities appropriate for rising 1st through 5th grade students — both outdoors and indoors, supervised closely by Mr. Glassey and an experienced group of counselors. The emphasis is on fun and socialization with activities including (but not limited to) swimming, sailing, exploring, and working with arts and crafts.

attending Parker Summer Program courses! Offered on the Mission Hills campus by Liliana Batelman, veteran Parker Lower School Spanish instructor, the course is designed for the complete beginner. Adult students acquire basic Spanish-language comprehension, conversation, reading and writing skills.

sports camps Parker prides itself on educating and shaping the whole child, subscribing to the notion of “sound mind, sound body.” Accordingly, the 2013 Summer Program offers an extensive list of Sports Camps, many of which are held during the week of June 17-June 21. From fencing to basketball, from soccer to volleyball, young athletes may choose to sharpen their skills in a sport they already play, or try a new one. Sports Camps are open to Lower, Middle and Upper School students and are held on the Linda Vista campus, or off-campus, in some instances. New to the Sports Camps for the coming summer are baseball, golf, lacrosse, martial arts, squash, and Sports for Life: Getting Fit, Staying Fit. Note: To assure proper staffing for all sports camps, reserve facilities and fields and order the appropriate number of camp t-shirts, registration must be completed by Monday, June 10, 2013. Registrations received after June 10 incur a $20.00 late fee.

Key individual teaching components include finishing (shooting), defending/attacking and one-on-one drills. Team skills focus on attacking the goal in the offensive third of the field, creating effective midfield play and using the defense to build an attack. Intermediate Volleyball Skills Camp (Girls & Boys) Director: Missy Ross This indoor volleyball camp focuses on those fundamentals that enable campers to take their game to the next level. Participants receive individualized instruction on passing footwork, platform construction, and platform angles. Spiking arm-swing with a focus on trunk rotation and contact point is emphasized. The spike approach is broken down, focusing on footwork and body position at the take-off point. Overhead pass/setting work drills emphasize correct hand placement and body position. Additional time is spent on individual defense and team concepts.

Inspiring excellence is also integral to the Francis Parker School Summer Program — now in its 54th year. From junior kindergarten through grade 12, Parker’s Summer Program offers an array of learning opportunities in the classroom and beyond. In the Lower, Middle, and Upper Schools, the focus remains on enrichment and advancement, keeping the student’s brain engaged during the summer months. MIDDLE SCHOOL COURSES

The emphasis of Middle School offerings falls squarely on enrichment. While a slate of JumpStart courses is offered, parents and students are encouraged to consider any of the many new courses, including Ballet—Beginning for Dancers and Athletes; Destination: Space Academy; Lights, Camera, IMPROV!; Chamber Orchestra; several new Bookbinding courses; Grammar 101; Citizen Journalism: Digital Stories, and Beginning Conversational Spanish for Adults, plus a reconfigured outdoors course that takes the students to the Grand Canyon and Lake Powell. The afternoon session features the long–standing and always fun Lancer Afternoon Camp. For students who enroll in both morning and afternoon activities, lunch is provided at the Parker Café. For students who sign up for morning or afternoon classes only, lunch may be purchased for $6.00 on a daily basis. An extended day (after–school care) option for children who wish to remain on campus following afternoon activities (beginning at 3:30pm and running until 5:30pm) is available. Supervised by Parker staff, the charge is $11.00 per hour, billed at the end of Session I and Session II. All classes and activities (including “Birdie Ball” Golf Camp for Beginners, but excluding Destination: Space Academy and Beginning Conversational Spanish for Adults, other golf camps, squash and tennis) are held on the Linda Vista campus located at 6501 Linda Vista Road.

Lancer Afternoon Camp Director: Seth Tunick & Staff After a morning of exercising the mind, it’s time for students to enjoy all that San Diego’s recreational landscape has to offer. Parker’s signature Lancer Afternoon Camp samples the fun and sun that defines America’ Finest City. Heading to the beach, splashing in the surf, kayaking in Mission Bay, sliding at Soak City, climbing a rock wall, taking 2

Fashion Camp and Jewelry Design— Beginning Instructor: Maria Moscato This course touches on several aspects of how fashion is created, from textile design for fabric to the construction of a fashion garment. Three collections (one collection per week) will be created by students with the objective of modeling each in a fashion show at the final class. The first collection involves a luxury fashion item: a 36” by 36” painted scarf with fashion house Hermes as the case study. Versatility of the scarf is explored in its various forms as a halter top, belt, sarong, head scarf, and Japanese Furoshiki purses. Matching jewelry complements the collection using basic jewelry–making methods with fabric, lace, feathers and beads. The second collection involves silkscreen and t–shirt design. Students learn how to create a silkscreen and transfer their design to t–shirts. Matching earrings and bracelets complement street–wear style. Macramé, knotting, beading and Fimo clay sculpture pendants are all created. The third collection is based on revamping and recycling old clothing, upgrading one or two garments or converting them into something different, like a purse. New! Fashion Camp and Jewelry Design—Advanced Instructor: Maria Moscato For students who attended the Fashion Camp & Jewelry Design course in 2012 and wish to advance. Students create two collections with in–depth detail and sewing techniques. Using actual patterns will be included in the garment–making process. A fashion show the final day of class allows students to model their creations. The first collection (completed during weeks 1 and 2) has students creating an outfit that reflects an artist chosen by the class. Top, pants/ skirt and jewelry come together and are modeled at the fashion show with an inspirational painting projected in the background. Students work from scratch and learn how to use a sewing machine. Fabric painting, appliqué, and other embellishment techniques on the finished garment may be chosen. New! Bookbinding: Intervention and restoration Instructor: Lucia Farias Students transform old books into pieces of art. Whether by painting, cutting, folding, collaging, overwriting, tearing, gluing, stamping, or hiding, students give new meaning to books and bring them back to life with imagination and creativity. Students complete three “intervened” books ready to be exhibited in the School’s Rose Art Gallery, with the ability to make additional altered books at a later date. New! bookbinding: Upcycled Books Instructor: Lucia Farias Students create books with recycled materials for covers, using soda 4–packs, vinyl banners, shipping boxes, envelopes, cereal/cake/cracker boxes, beads and charms. Pages will be sewn directly onto covers with the stitching exposed. Students use recycled materials and turn them into poignant, useful journals. Students produce three 20–page books

Ceramic Art: Clay, Water and Fire Instructor: Steve Cook (June 24–July 12) The Session I class encourages each student to develop and explore his or her own artistic vision through three– dimensional sculpture and pottery. Students work directly in clay with a variety of techniques chosen specifically for each individual project. The results will be fired in one of Parker’s kilns and become a lasting record, an accompaniment to daily life either on the coffee table, the bookshelf or as an object of inspiration. No experience necessary. Beginners and advanced students are challenged to produce their best work. Instructor: Kelly A. Middle School students learn about the American folk art tradition of face jugs. digital photography Instructors: Genevieve Moeller (June 24–July 12); Phillip Harder (July 15–August 2) In a quest for creative vision, students explore the capabilities of digital photography. Students learn camera functions, file management, beginning Photoshop and image editing, enhancement and manipulation. Through assignments and lectures, students learn to photograph people, landscapes, architecture, interiors and conceptual subject matter. They come to understand the essential tools of the trade, including the use of color and black and white to create dynamic compositions as well as how to handle the elements and principles of design. By course’s end, students have laid out their work in book form, ready to be self–published at a later date as an iPad ebook and/or custom print. Stone Carving/ Steel Fabrication Instructor: Jaclyn Enck The course emphasizes standard techniques and approaches to working with stone and steel as important art mediums. Students work with diamond saws, pneumatic hammers, chisels, rasps and other power tools to design and execute three–dimensional sculptures in alabaster and other soft stone. Skills developed include bending, cutting, and welding of steel forms. Students will produce one finished work (mounted on a base) by the end of the class. Woodworking Instructor: Kit Camp Students discover why woodworking is a fulfilling, lifelong pursuit. They choose from a broad menu of woodworking projects designed to expose them to the safe use of both hand and power tools, while exploring traditional joinery techniques. Students personalize their work, not only through the choice of wood and finish, but also by selecting further embellishments like carving or painting. No previous woodworking experience required. Instructor: Akshay Sateesh This class advances students’ life skills by using games from improvisation theater, and other everyday games. Students lift their confidence, learn to share ideas freely, and work in teams to solve problems. Each week of the course is focused on a different leadership theme: Week 1: Communication; Week 2: Teamwork; Week 3: Commitment. House of Blues® presents the jazz 88.3 summer jazz workshop

Director: Nathan Jarrell The 3rd Annual Summer Jazz Workshop, now in partnership with San Diego’s House of Blues® and Jazz 88.3, provides the opportunity for music students, ages 12-18, to study with some of San Diego’s most gifted professional jazz musicians/ teachers in an environment designed to nurture their growth as musicians, both technically and creatively. This is a hands-on Workshop where students learn performance skills, improvisation, jazz theory and jazz history with the emphasis on playing music! The Workshop is open to beginning through advanced skill levels. All students must be able to sight-read music and have a minimum of one (1) year’s experience on their instrument of choice. Three one-week sessions will be held at the Thiemann Music Center on Parker’s Linda Vista campus. This is the perfect venue for students to grow musically as they learn to express themselves through the art of jazz improvisation. Parents and guardians are urged to take advantage of the Summer Program’s online registration and tuition payment option. For complete information, visit francisparker.org/summer. Students may also be registered by completing and submitting a paper registration form. A printable registration form can be downloaded from Parker’s Summer Program link (francisparker. org/summer), completed and mailed to the Summer Program’s office, located on the Linda Vista campus. Completed registration forms may be faxed to 858.569.0621 but will not be considered complete until the full tuition payment is received. Completed registration forms and tuition payments may also be dropped off in person with the Upper School receptionist in the Administration and Student Services Building, or at the Lower School office.

Are courses offered that are eligible to receive academic credit? Yes. Many courses are structured to award academic credit at the Upper School or high school level — on a trimester, semester or year-long basis.

Will all courses published online and in this catalogue be offered as advertised? Assuming that the minimum number of students enroll in a given course (typically five students), it will be offered.

For what grade levels are courses and activities offered during the Parker Summer Programs? Junior Kindergarten through 12th grade.

What if the minimum number of students for a course is not reached? The course will be cancelled. In the event a course is cancelled due to underenrollment, parents/guardians will be notified and a full refund issued. It is anticipated that all courses will be confirmed during the first week of June 2013.

Will additional courses or activities be added to the initially-published roster of courses? Quite possibly. The Summer Program Office recommends that students and parents check Parker’s website frequently (www.francisparker.org/ summer) for changes to the list of courses and activities.

What forms of payment does the Summer Program accept for course tuition and activity fees? Tuition payments may be made online by credit card or ACH only at the time of registration. If completing a paper registration form, a personal or business check, payable to Francis Parker School, or cash, is acceptable. Do not send cash through the mail.

Will classes be taught on thursday, July 4? In honor of the National Holiday that falls on a Thursday this year, there will no classes that day and both campuses will be closed for classes and business. Please note that all classes will be held as regularly scheduled on Friday, July 5.

May students who do not attend Parker during the fall/winter/spring terms enroll in Parker Summer Program courses? Yes. An increasing number of students the past several summers have come from public and independent schools throughout San Diego County. In addition, the program continues to attract international students.

Does the Summer Program offer an extended care or after-school option? Yes. Extended care is offered at the Lower and Middle School at the rate of $11.00/hour. At the Lower School, extended care is available in the morning from 7:30am–8:15am and in the afternoon from 3:30pm– 5:30pm. At the Middle School, extended care is offered in the afternoon only, from 3:30pm– 5:30pm. Direct billing takes place at the end of Session I and Session II.

Will the Linda Vista campus library be open during the 2013 Summer Program? Yes. Hours beginning June 24 through the end of the program on August 2 will be 7:45am and 12:15pm, Monday-Friday.

upper SCHOOL COURSES An extensive selection of academic and arts courses coupled with a number of Sports Camps is offered at the Upper School level this summer. Whether students seek a trimester, semester or year–credit course, or simply wish to take a class or classes for enrichment, the Summer Program provides a variety of great options. New courses have been added to the mix, including Filmmaker’s Backpack: Creating the Short Film; Sports for Life: Getting Fit, Staying Fit; Bookbinding: Methods; Building Websites with WordPress; Chamber Orchestra; and America Abroad: U.S. Diplomacy from 1949 to complement an already rich and diverse slate of offerings. We believe there is a course or Sports Camp for every student seeking to keep his or her brain engaged during the summer months. For the student who enrolls in both a morning and an afternoon course (or courses), lunch is included in the tuition fee. Students who take only morning or afternoon courses may purchase lunch daily for $6.00. Upper School students take all classes on the Linda Vista campus, located at 6501 Linda Vista Road. AP Biology Preparation Instructors: Cindi Schildhouse and Dave Johnson This Pass/Fail course is a two–week intensive preparation designed for students who plan to go directly into Advanced Placement Biology in the

Reading with Purpose and Power: On to the Next Level Instructor: Nancy Anderson The course focuses on reading comprehension, reading with purpose, and reading for fun. Students practice strategies learned in class, helping them approach, process, and comprehend required summer reading. In this workshop–style class, students not only tackle the structure of a novel, but also learn to navigate through complicated textbooks, extrapolating important material from the text without feeling lost or overwhelmed.

Stone Carving/ Steel Fabrication Instructor: Jaclyn Enck This course emphasizes standard techniques and approaches to working with stone and steel as important art mediums. Students work with diamond saws, pneumatic hammers, chisels, rasps 20

and other power tools to design and execute three–dimensional sculptures in alabaster and other soft stone. Skills developed include bending, cutting, and welding of steel forms. Students will be expected to produce one finished work (mounted on a base) by the end of the three–week class. A field trip to a local sculpture garden may be scheduled. Programming Workshop in Java (I & II) Instructor: Dr. Mark O’Donnell This hands–on, project–based course is a fun way to either begin learning about computer programming or strengthen existing programming skills. The class is largely self–paced, so the range of a student’s projects will be determined by that student’s level of experience. Beginning programmers start with the fundamentals and create interactive programs the first week. Experienced programmers learn more advanced constructs and build more complex games and applications. Project–Based Robotics Instructor: Ryan Griggs This course develops engineering skills in a project-based, hands-on experiential learning environment that introduces students to the capabilities of robots. The objective is to conceive and construct a robot that is fully mobile and has the ability to perform a dedicated task. Students work in small groups on articulated tasks, generally in parallel with other groups, to ultimately deliver a fully functioning robot.
