Scenic Splendor
PHOTOGRAPHER SUSAN FAIRGRIEVE fell in love with Nantucket during years spent visiting the island with her late husband as they sat out at Great Point Lighthouse and watched the seals. Taken by the beauty of the shores, the New Jersey native created an Instagram page to share her work. This venture led Fairgrieve to open her own gift boutique, ACK 4170
(18 B Federal St., 774.325.5105). There she supports small makers and artists who collaborate on projects, creating cheese and cutting boards, beach towels, candles, and more. (Her two bestselling hand-poured candles are available every fall— cranberry bog and autumn spice.) “Everyone really supports everyone on the island. Local supporting local,” Fairgrieve says.

EVOLVING CULTURE
A must-see when visiting Nantucket is the Whaling Museum (13 Broad St., 508.228.1894). Explore the rich history of life aboard whaling ships in the 18th and 19th centuries, when danger plagued every voyage. Not only do the exhibits revolve and evolve, but you can also catch a beautiful panoramic view of the harbor from the roof. If art is your scene, Fairgrieve recommends the Samuel Owen Gallery on Centre Street (40 Centre St., 508.680.1445). There you

can find ultra-contemporary American and European paintings, sculptures, glass installations, and photography.
SHIPS AND SCENERY
The most scenic spot in town, in Fairgrieve’s opinion, is a gorgeous boat basin on Easy Street. Looking out at the harbor, the Old North Wharf is to your right, and to your left is the terminal for the steamship ferry to the mainland.
Another island icon is a tiny red rowboat on Easy Street called Sunken Ship, one of the most popular places to photograph. In the winter, it’s decked with a Christmas tree.
For more impressive scenery, spend a day on the water on a fishing charter or take a sunset cruise.
Are you in search of some exercise with a view? Nantucket provides ample opportunity. Much of the island is conservation land, crisscrossed by a vast system of trails for hiking and biking.
ISLAND EATS
If you’re looking for tasty American fare in a classic Nantucket setting, Chef Patrick Ridge’s Island Kitchen (1 Chins Way, 508.228.2639) is a good bet for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Dishes at this perennial favorite feature fresh, local ingredients. There’s both indoor and outdoor seating.
Another of Fairgrieve’s favorite places to go for a bite to eat is Millie’s on
Madaket near the water (326 Madaket Rd., 508.228.8435). It’s open only in the summer, but it’s the best place around for baja-styled seafood, she says. There you can enjoy a picturesque view of the sunset.
