THE DESIGN District is a one-stop shop for all things artistic in Dallas. Located just northwest of downtown, the vibrant live/work/play environment features some of the hottest designers, galleries, and fine dining in the city. Artist, educator, and gallerist Dr. Valerie Gillespie is an enthusiastic booster for the area. She and her husband, artist Emmanuel
Gillespie, own Pencil on Paper Gallery (4755 Algiers St., Ste. 100, 469.360.4931), which creates opportunities for emerging and established artists, and offers summer camp programs for children and year-round weekend classes for all ages. “We are excited to be a part of the magic in this district,” says Gillespie. —Lisa Rosen

GREAT GALLERIES
Ask Gillespie for a favorite gallery and she immediately names two, both owned by “really solid, cool women,” in her opinion.
“Every time you walk into Conduit Gallery (1626 Hi Line Dr., 214.939.0064), owner Nancy Whitenack and director Danette Torres Dufilho smile and greet you. They’ve been in the game for 35-plus years. Everybody goes to all their openings, so if [an artist] shows at Conduit, it’s a big deal.”

(1845 E Levee St., Ste. 110, 214.745.1415) is also a must-visit. “Cris has an eye for design and beauty. She shows artists whose work is fun and funky. You want to have it in your home,” says Gillespie.
Historic Dragon Street offers a whole row of gallery options, interior design studios, and shops. “Everybody knows that if you’re an art gallery on Dragon Street, you’ve made it. It’s the hippest gallery street in Dallas.”
TAKE A BITE
“I absolutely love going to El Bolero (1201 Oak Lawn Ave. #160, 214.741.1986) for business meetings or a nice night out with my husband. Everybody there is so chic and posh. My fave meal on the menu is the enchiladas de queso. They also have a signature mocktail, the Organic Agave Grapefruit Spritz, that is to die for. After a long day, I’ll ask for a shot of tequila in it for an added kick.”

Neighborhood Store (2532 Converse St., 214.943.5650) offers “West Texas modern” furniture and decor while also showcasing artwork from local artists. “I’m in love with their concept,” Gillespie says. “‘This is what your art will look like above your couch.’ It’s so smart.”
Grit Fitness (1729 Irving Blvd., Ste. 101, 469.930.8404) “is where most of us gallerists go to work out. Their instructors are so enthusiastic and welcoming that even if you’re not the fittest person, you still feel like you belong.”
Then it’s back to the galleries to enjoy the Design District’s version of nightlife. “Galleries are kind of like our bars,” Gillespie says. “To have a good time, you go to gallery openings and look at art.”
