Parker Mission, Vision, and Values Established in 1912, Parker is one of the premier independent day schools on the West Coast, providing an exceptional college-preparatory education for students in Junior Kindergarten through Grade 12.

OUR MISSION

To create and inspire a diverse community of independent thinkers whose academic excellence, global perspective, and strength of character prepare them to make a meaningful difference in the world.

OUR VISION

Our vision is aspirational, creating a roadmap of what we hope for the future. It sets our direction, promotes growth and innovation, and unites our community around the greater good. Parker graduates students who embody those qualities essential for academic success and personal fulfillment—intellectual curiosity, creative thinking, a passion for learning, a sense of ethical responsibility, self-reliance, community engagement, and global competence—by offering a balanced, challenging, and integrated JK to Grade 12 educational program in academics. Parker is committed to developing students who:

Strive for academic excellence while maintaining a balance of social and emotional well-being. Possess the necessary skills, aptitude, and imagination to participate in the fundamental human conversation on what is right, fair, and good. Think critically, write persuasively, and communicate confidently. Are familiar with the cultural, political, historical, scientific, ethical, and economic forces shaping the world. Develop the necessary tools to realize their individual talents and potential in their academic and professional lives. Embrace the larger world through meaningful, age-appropriate opportunities for experiential education.

OUR VALUES

Our core values support the mission and vision, affirming our principles, beliefs, priorities, and philosophy, shared by all members of the community. Parker’s core values are: Students First—Preparing students to make a meaningful difference in the world is the cornerstone of a Parker education. Our decision-making framework puts the student experience first and aims to create an optimal environment for circumspection and personal development. All decisions are guided by what is best for children and informed by proven practices for enhanced student learning and social-emotional development. Parker’s programs provide appropriate structure and guidance for each stage of the student experience, with the end goal of graduating individuals who are self-reliant and lifelong learners. Academic Excellence—Within a learning environment where all students are seen, known, and valued, we offer courses that move students first through foundational knowledge and then forward “as far as the mind can see.” Students experience innovative and advanced courses that inspire them to think and achieve beyond their initial expectations. We partner with families to meet students’ needs and guide their academic journey. Global Perspective—We ask all members of the Parker community to become attuned to the systems—cultural, political, and economic—that create diverse backgrounds and perspectives throughout the world. Students learn from a globally-focused curriculum and gain direct experience of the world through ageappropriate experiential education, service-learning, and guided international travel. Strength of Character—We seek to develop students who understand and value behaviors that are true and good. We expect all community members to model upstanding citizenship, appropriately express their beliefs, and understand their responsibilities as members of the larger community. We provide opportunities for students to explore and strengthen these characteristics and expectations for themselves. Inclusive Community—We strive to create a community in which each person is given the opportunity to develop a healthy sense of self and empathy towards one another. We courageously lean into difficult conversations to cultivate an environment of inclusion and belonging. We continuously reflect on our practices to prioritize cultural competency in our curriculum, program, policies, and strategic goals. No Limit to Better—True to our progressive legacy, we reflect on and iterate all aspects of school life to ensure that the Parker experience is distinct and serves the needs of our evolving community. There is no limit to what we can dream, do and try. By evaluating and innovating our practice, we model the habits of lifelong learning. Striving beyond limits is the essence of a Parker education and fuels our journey “as far as the mind can see.” Francis Parker School Parent Notebook | 5

Parker Branding THE PARKER WINDOW

Parker's window, a distinctive barbed quatrefoil design, is a defining feature of the Szekely Auditorium on the Mission Hills Campus and appears at the Linda Vista Campus on the Student Life Center building. It was the inspiration for the School's logo and tagline, "as far as the mind can see."

SCHOOL COLORS

Parker's school colors are brown, gold and teal. The two original colors, brown and gold, were taken from the brown terraces found in Mission Hills in the early 1900s and the surrounding canyons with yellow violets, our school flower. The teal color was added as a tertiary color in 2012 during the School's centennial year.

TAGLINE

Adopted in 2012, Parker's centennial year, the School's tagline reads: "as far as the mind can see."

THE LANCER

Parker's fearless Lancer, introduced in the late 1960s when the Upper School was reestablished, was re-imagined in 2017 to capture the spirit of Parker.

SPIRIT WEAR

Show your Parker Pride with spirit wear for the whole family. Parkerthemed clothing and accessories can be purchased online at parkerspirit.com

For questions about the School's logos or for permission to use them for School purposes, please contact the Communications Department by email to communications@francisparker.org.

Glossary of Terms Annual Giving: Annual gifts advance Parker’s mission, support our culture of diversity and inclusion, ensure the best academic experience for each student, and help the School bridge the gap between tuition and cost of a Parker education. Tuition falls short of the true cost of a Parker education. Every student at Parker is subsidized, even students who do not receive financial assistance. The gap between tuition revenues and full annual cost is approximately $3,250 per student. Our goal is 100 percent parent giving participation. Back to School Night: All parents are invited to their child’s classes to meet the faculty and experience a shortened version of a day-in-the-life of their student. Day of Giving: The Tuesday following Thanksgiving has come to be recognized as a global celebration of generosity. Parker participates in this special day, with the PA's leadership (as part of the Gala) to raise support for teachers. Dress Code: Parker maintains a commitment to standards of dress that are appropriate for the school day. The purpose of the dress code is to create a sense of community and equality among the student body; to ensure students’ comfort during the many activities they may participate in throughout the school day; to promote the equitable treatment of all students regardless of gender, race, religion, or economic standing; and to create a distraction-free academic environment.

10 | Francis Parker School Parent Notebook

Financial Assistance: Parker provides aid to qualified families who submit financial information through School & Student Services (SSS). SSS is a nationally recognized program used by independent schools nationwide to assess a family’s demonstrated financial need. The School awards financial assistance to 24 percent of the student body for a total of $6.7 million annually in 2021-2022. Even though many families at Parker make financial sacrifices to pay tuition, whether they receive financial assistance or not, it is crucial for every member of our community to participate in our annual giving campaign. Gala: The PA’s annual fundraising event, which raises support for student financial assistance and Parker teachers (see “Day of Giving”). The evening includes auctions, dinner, and entertainment. Grandparent Council (GPC): Open to all grandparents of Parker students, the GPC hosts fun activities including Grandparent & Special Friends Days at the Lower School in the fall and at the Middle and Upper Schools in the spring. Visit francisparker.org/grandparents for more information. Head of School New Parent Dinner: A special evening event for new parents from all three divisions in the fall. Homecoming: A fun-filled event for the entire Parker community featuring a home football game on the Linda Vista Campus.
