FEMINISM
DANK MEME SQUAD
GENDER IN SPORT
By Aron Roselee
Have you ever noticed how when you are flicking through TV programs of sport how hard it is to find sporting programs of women and all you find is mostly of men? In studies it has been shown that the amount of male sporting shows to female sporting shows is a 23 to 1 ratio. The television shaped the way we see men and women especially in sport, from the way sporting uniforms convey the human body to the amount men and women get paid in their sport. In my experience I have seen how the sorting community challenges male and female in sport. Kiteboarding, the male division is a lot stronger and had a lot more coverage on it and is considered the “main event” and the women are considered as the normal event. The men get more prize money while the women get less but they are both doing the same sport. It is the same in most water sports where the men are the main event because the level that they do the sport at is a lot
higher but that is just because of the male body is stronger. With all this being said the way that the media portrays men and women is sport effects growth in your sport, because if you have media on pushing the male side of it and how great it is then it is harder to get the women side of that sport out there and stops that side of the sport growing as fast as it should. So in the media that’s how gender roles are constructed in sport by pushing down the female side of a sport and not letting it grow while putting the male side of it up. So try be more open to both male and female sides of a sport because they are both equally important and both genders work as hard to get to where they are, so take that into thought when flicking past thewomen’s sport channels next time.

Media and Women Men and women are shown completely different in the media and in real life, they give us a false perception of what gender roles really are this is shown in all forms of media from books to the news, they could be small things such as a women being told what to wear for a TV show or much bigger things such as a women being shown as a weak Just in a TV or book just because she’s a women. There are many examples of sexism and gender inequality throughout the media a great example is that Egyptian news anchors were told to loose weight otherwise they wouldn’t be aloud on the air, Khadiga Khattab a experienced raido host and tv anchor with more than 20 years of expeirence was told she needed to loose weight or else she would be fired or atleast put of air, its not just her it is 7 other employees who are all female and fear loosing their job if they do not loose weight, she is the only one who is not afraid to speak up out of fear of loosing her job. These reports and anchors help us understand us that the world we live in is very sexist, esspitally in a industry where you’re constantly on show this is not good for women as it projects them as just objects we can control and use for views and better ratings that’s why there are artcles such as “Top 10 Hottest Women News Anchors around the world”
This just shows us that we need to put a stop to articles online such as these and make people wake up and rearlise that sexism is a real thing in the media esspitally, if not we just continue the cylce.

Men In The
Media By Amado Bravo
I’ve seen way too many men nowadays being portrayed as the main gender in the media, whether it be on television, at the cinema, or even in books. Sometimes men even play women’s roles in movies, which was especially prevalent in olden day Shakespearean society, and whenever a woman gets cast as a lead character in a movie, which is rather rare, they often get almost nothing to say compared to men. Men also get portrayed and these violent, emotionless, ruthless action heroes that save a damsel and/or damsels in distress, who is or are normally portrayed as weak, passive, manipulative ‘housewives’ who don’t like any type of action whatsoever.
Speaking of which, sometimes women do have what’s considered to be men’s roles in movies, like Scarlett Johansson and Elizabeth Olsen in the Avengers for example, but often, as mentioned before, don’t get as many words to say as men. Men often also have subtle changes in the characters they play as well, like often times getting slightly or much bigger weapons, or having a bigger demand to look good physically. In many

cases, children are the ones that have these ideas of men being the dominant ones and women being the recessive ones. Personally, I’m not really one for that type of portrayal, even though women are slowly getting more and more big roles in movies nowadays.
In my opinion, I think that parents should try and teach kids of the twenty first century to treat everyone as equal individuals. I also think that parents should teach kids about gender equality because kids, if not taught from a young age, will be susceptible, and vulnerable, to all the gender stereotypes and inequalities the media puts out and shows digitally for everyone to see, especially men’s stereotypes.

REAL MEN DO CRY
By Jesse Lochoff
Every 3 weeks a man is killed by his abusive partner and this is never brought up in the media. 600 000 men are victims of domestic abuse every year and only 10% will contact the police about there abusive partner. When someone mentions domestic abuse you will assume they are speaking about a man abusing a women and people just assume men do not get domestic abusive. From these statistics we can see men are abused just as often as women are but it is never portrayed in the media because men are supposed to be big and strong and only 10% of people will report there abusive partner. Here is a real story from an anonymous victim of domestic abuse. “One day it escalated she came up and asked me why are you late, i said i got help up in traffic, she kept saying you’re having affairs and she had a knife she was cutting some bread and just plunged it my chest she had her hands around my throat and the knife was still in my chest the neighbours did hear all of this going on and called the police. When they arrived they arrested me not her”. This shows how even the police are influenced by the media. You will ask why doesn't he just leave the relationship, its not just as easy as that normally the victim would have been groomed away from there family and friends and they often have no where to go or none to speak to. Often men find it

Interview With Shaquille O’Neal by Amado Bravo Amado: Hello Mr. O’Neal, thank you for meeting me at this time, especially with your busy schedule. Shaq: Oh, it’s a pleasure, and please, call me Shaq. Amado: Alright then, thanks for the insight, anyways, I hope it’s ok if I ask you one or two questions about gender in general in the media? Shaq: Sure, go for it. Amado: Thank you. Shaq: No problem. Amado: Ok, so, first question, what do you think about how men and women are being portrayed in the media in general? And why? Shaq: Good question, well, I think that women aren’t given enough credit with regards to things like movies, books, social media and media in general. The reason being because, in general, men are given more roles to do in anything related to media, especially nowadays, and it’s, from what I’ve seen, not getting any better, especially anytime soon. Amado: Second and final one, do you think that women should get more main roles in movies, advertising and anything of sorts? Shaq: Yes. Amado: Why? Shaq: Because, in general, women are seen as being weaker than men, which is not often the case, which often times makes women feel inferior. I say that because I know what it feels like to feel inferior, despite my size. Amado: Well, thank you for answering those questions, even though it was very short, that and I actually didn’t have a lot of time to actually do this with you because of your schedule, but I hope to one day meet you again and hopefully get to know you better.
Interview with Kambili By Aron Rosslee Aron:
hello, Kambili. I hope you are well and was wondering if we could talk about your upbringing?
Kambili: hello Aron I am good thanks and sure we can talk about that. Aron:
as growing up how did your father paly a role in the way that you were raised?
Kambili:
well from a young age my father was the ruling hand in my life he set all the rules at home and if anybody did not follow them then they would have been punished like when my brother Jaja didn’t come to church my father then threw my mothers figurines across the room at him. Religion was a huge influence at home.
Aron:
was it just your family like this or others?
Kambili:
Aron:
my family was male dominance must like the rest of the town ruled by a male government and the men were seemed higher then the women.
when do you realize this is not the only way to live?
Kambili:
when I go stay with my aunt for a bit and I see how everyone is equal at home and everyone has a voice.
Aron:
well thank you for taking the time out of your day to do this interview.
Kambili: no problem.
Interview with Kathleen Kennedy by Jack Mordey Interview:
Jack : Hi, I’m here with Kathleen Kennedy, A famous Hollywood movie producer who has made movies such as star wars Jurassic park, Do you think that the movie industry is dominated by men? And if so why?
Kathleen: Yes I do, I think this because not many women want to go into movie because its not a field that we are expos school or even encouraged to do.
Jack: Why would you say to all the people saying the movie industry is a male dominated industry and its impossible fo male to get in?
Kathleen: It really is a male dominated industry but it is possible to get your foot in the door if you’re talented enough Jack: Would you say it’s easier for a less talented male to get a role in the movie world that a better acting female?
Kathleen: yes because there are simply more roles available to men and they can’t be called out on this sexism because the script is written Jack: Thank you for this new insight into the sexism in the movie world.
Interview with Joe By Jess Jesse: Do you believe that women are supposed to stay home while the men are at work and are the bread winners. Joe: No i don’t women also go out and work and can also be the bread winners but that doesn't even matter because women are payed less. Jesse: well did you know that there is a study that shows that men are willing to work harder and longer then there female colleges. Joe: well that shouldn't matter they should still be payed the same amount as men. Jesse: Why, if they work the same amount of time they should without a doubt. Jesse: Did you know on average men work 42 minutes more then women per day it might not seem like much but that is 4.2 hours a week and about 21 hours extra a month Joe: That does make a bit more sense now i can see why the men are usually more payed then women.
Book review Eragon 1. Setting and plot:
By Amdo Bravo
This book is set in a 4ictional country named Alagaësia where a young farm boy named Eragon lives. One day, he sees and hears an explosion go off and 4inds what seems to be a stone (which is actually a dragon egg). He later goes and tries to sell the ‘stone’ in his local village, to no avail. Suddenly, the egg then cracks, and out pops a dragon. Once Eragon touches the newly born dragon in an attempt to pet it, he forms somewhat of a link to it, a mental link to be exact, which then grows stronger as the two get older. The two then go on these crazy and unexpected adventures and eventually end up 4ighting the tyrannical ruler of the kingdom, King Galbatorix (and wins). 1. Genre and characterization: The genre of the novel is fantasy. At the start of this story, the young Eragon is naïve, inexperienced in the arts of dragon riding and not the smartest of people in the world, but by the end of the book, Eragon becomes this young man who is a very formidable foe, very experienced in the arts of dragon riding and an enemy that someone should not tri4le with. He had also grown tremendously physically and mentally throughout the novel. 1. Style of writing: The style of writing in the book is a mixture between modern English and older style English, which is very weird, seeing that it was published back in 2002, and republished the following year. 1. Atmosphere: The general atmosphere of the book is very much dystopian. It also often has very morbid elements in it as well, but in just as morbid elements there are, there’re also very funny and joking elements in it as well. 1. Conclusion and suitability: In conclusion, the book is actually very good and is a very nice book, so long as the person is no younger than about 12 and you’re type of person that likes that type of book, i.e. fantasy genre. 1. Judgement and rating: My judgement on this book is that it’s a very nice read, but it is a bit morbid in a few instances and is quite dystopian as well, although it has its upsides. Overall I give this book a 8.5/10.
MOVIE REVIEW By Aron Rosslee
“Step brothers Everyone has that one movie that they can watch with their friends and watch it so many times and never gets old or gets less funny. The movie called stepbrothers is one of the funniest movies of all times. Will Ferrell plays Brennan and John C. Reilly plays Dale, the two main characters. The movie is bout how a man and a woman 4ind love but at the same time they 4ind out that they both have sons that are about the age of 40 and still live at home. The movie progresses by them meeting and doing dumb things together and messing with each other and then becoming friends and growing the family. I learned from this movie that’s no matter is they are family or not that you can still treat them like they are. This movie is for the ages from 16 and up because there are a few things that are inappropriate. I would recommend this movie to anyone who wants a good laugh and learn new pranks. I would give this movie 4 stars out of 5.
Movie Review The Shawshank Redemption By Jack Mordey The Shawshank Redemption is a movie about an innocent man being convicted of his wife’s murder and while he’s in jail he meets a man called red, it is at this point he realizes that he needs to break out, over the course of 20 years Andy builds up the trust of all the people in the prison, including the warden by doing banking for him as before his time in prison he was a banker and of value to the warden, but when there is an inmate who can prove Andy’s innocence , the warden has him killed. At this point andy realizes its time to go as he has secretly been building a tunnel out of his cell but before he goes, he delivers documents proving how corrupt the warden is, some time later Red is released and he heads to 4ind Andy as they had both previously discussed.
The movie as a whole is a great movie with great acting and is often called one of the best movies of all time, although the movie only has two female talking roles this is ok because of the time period it is set in 40s after the war, were women would mainly be staying at home and wouldn’t be working and rather staying home so that is why there are not many female roles due to it wanting to be realistic.
The Silence of Lambs review By Jesse Lochoff The silence of lambs is a movie based on a novel written by Thomas Harris it is a Crime/Drama/Thriller. The movie is about FB agent in training, Clarice Starling who is played by Jodie Foster, her job is to interview serial killer and cannibal Dr. Hannibal Lector played by Anthony Hopkins who was a renowned psychiatrist he is now serving life behind bars for his violent murders and cannibalism. Clarice is asked to interview Dr. Hannibal Lector to try get into the psychopath thinking of Hannibal Lector. They believe Hannibal can help them with there current case on Buffalo Bill played by Ted Levine Bill as a serial killer who skins his victims who has the idea of making a women suit out of the skin of women. I would recommend this movies to the ages of 15+ it is a brilliant movie it is old but don't let that put you off. The production is great and so is the acting.
Creative Task By Jesse Lochoff It is the year 2016 and generally speaking we’ve never lived better. Technology and development has enriched most of our lives. However, in many part of the world in many aspects of society gender inequality is still on the same level as it was hundreds of years ago. How can modern men fight for gender equality? How can gender equality be promoted in our community and our society? I believe the transition from inequality to equality needs to start in the home. Young children are like sponges, they absorb everything that is going on around them, this makes them easy to influence and they are great learners. They best way for them to learn in the home is by parents setting a great example. Parents shouldn’t be teaching their children to ‘do as I say, not as I do”. Instead of lecturing, parents should make a statement of gender equality by sharing all tasks and responsibilities and not making tasks gender specific. The men of the family can do the dishes, clean and look after the children. The woman in the house can make sure the car is well maintained, the bills are paid and the pool is cleaned. Moms and dads must act equally in front of their children and never show resentment when performing their chores. A very important part of ensuring gender equality is the way children are raised. Starting when they are very young, parents should treat children equally in every possible way. It is important for parents to try to raise children without the
Creative Task By Aron Rosslee In schools they say that every learner are equal and should be treated the same and how sexism is not allowed at the school even though they portray it in their school guidelines. It starts with the school uniform, where girls are meant to wear dresses that are cold in the winter and don’t have a say to if they want to change it to something warmer because the school has an image they want that is set by the media in the standards of schools. Then the boy uniform is a suit that makes them looks like business means that the school makes them wear and not by choose, where is the freedom of expression? Hair, boys are meant to have sort hair and girls are meant to have long hair. Where is the freedom of expression, there isn’t any even when the schools say everyone is equal and all they care about is how people outside the school will react and now worry about how the students feel that they aren’t being treated equally. So are you in a school that treats the learners as equals and give them the learning environment that they want to learn in cause at the end of the day its all about the learners.
Creative Task By Amado Bravo Dear diary, Today has possibly got to be one of, if not the most confusing, yet surprising days I’ve had in a long time, mainly because of the fact that I not only saw a news reporter come up to me and bombard me with questions that mad no sense whatsoever, but she also asked me three questions I will not forget for the rest of my life. She asked if I was a feminist, immediately followed, without giving me a chance to answer might I add, by why I was a feminist and what I thought about women in the media. So what I did, still clearly and visibly shocked, and angry to, was I answered by saying, “Well you can go away now, because I’m not answering your first two stupid questions, but I will answer the third one you asked, ok, so I think that women are being degraded in the media because the big companies, in my opinion at least, want to appeal more to men than women, that and those same big companies don’t really care about women and what they think or say, even if women bring in more and more people, and money, into the business. Plus, men are more often than not, being portrayed as having bigger and fancier weapons gadgets, technology and cars in movies, even if, and when, women get a lead role alongside their male counterparts.” After that, I left and went on my merry way, pondering what had just happened, and what I was just asked. Anyways, I have to go now, I have to do my homework. Yours sincerely, Amado
