Welcome

Welcome to the heartland of lakes and pines The Heartland Lakes area offers a variety of opportunities – from scenic retreats and outdoor sports to rich cultural experiences, shopping, dining and entertainment. Enjoy the town and its people while surrounded by pristine lakes and tall pine forests. Located along the scenic, 88-mile State Hwy. 34 corridor from Detroit Lakes to Walker, Park Rapids has endless opportunities. Jump into the water for swimming, tubing, water skiing or fishing. JUNE/JULY 2021

Bike the famous Heartland Trail for a day of historic sights and healthy recreation. Explore the scenic North Country Trail. Play a game of disc golf, tennis or softball or have a picnic at one of the city or county parks. Golfers needn’t go far to find top-rated courses within a short drive in any direction. With more than 400 lakes, thousands of miles of trails and a wildlife refuge, the Heartland Lakes area is also a gateway to Itasca State Park, home of the Mississippi River Headwaters.

Meanwhile, the city’s downtown district offers a unique shopping experience with charming specialty shops, cafes, restaurants and Main Avenue’s unique middle-of-street parking. Local art galleries and museums celebrate the history and artistic talent of the community. Park Rapids and surrounding communities host many summer festivals celebrating small-town values and the beauty of the outdoors, such as the Hubbard County Fair, pig races, a blueberry gala 6

and a logging jubilee. The Heartland Lakes area teems with the sights and sounds of the great Minnesota northwoods. From life on the lakes to exercise on the trails, shopping the unique stores or just kicking back with a good book beneath the pines, the Park Rapids area offers it all. Flip through this issue of Summer Scene and you’ll find what you are looking for in lake and pine country. We just know that you’ll enjoy your stay. PARK RAPIDS ENTERPRISE

Best season ever. We didn’t spend months planning the perfect summer activities. Or drive to the cabin every Friday night with a kayak secured to the car’s roof. But the crude oil we transport was turned into the equipment that makes summer… well, summer. When the energy you invest in life meets the energy we fuel it with, summer fun happens.

Recreation ANGLERS CATCH GREAT MEMORIES ON AREA LAKES The Park Rapids area and its abundance of lakes provide ample opportunity for the fishing enthusiast. Whether you’re looking for fish simply for fun and the relaxation of dropping a line on a beautiful, summer day or wanting to take part in a competitive tournament, you’re sure to find what you want in Hubbard County. Once the fishing opener takes place in May, the lakes come alive as walleye anglers join those already out angling for panfish. Walleyes, bluegills, crappies, sunfish, rock bass and perch, even trout, swim in these waters, so take your pick. Whether you catch off the dock, from shore or pull fish into a boat, it’s all about creating memories in lakes and pines area. Summer fishing can be as simple as hanging out on the dock and snapping a photo with a big catch. Fishing is a family sport – for the youngster with his or her first rod and reel, the avid angler or an entire family on vacation visiting one of the many lakes and resorts. Check in at one of the local bait shops for tips on hot spots, best bait and lures, fishing style and time of day for whichever lake you’re heading out to fish.

ITASCA STATE PARK IS JEWEL OF MINNESOTA Itasca State Park – Minnesota’s oldest state park – was established on April 20, 1891 to preserve the old growth pine trees that were in danger of being logged. More than half a million people visit Itasca State Park every year to see the giant pines and wade across the headwaters of the Mississippi River State Water Trail. Park Rapids is the undisputed Gateway to Itasca State Park and the south entrance is a 22-mile drive from Park Rapids north on Hwy. 71. The east entrance is only a couple miles farther north of the south entrance, and then another mile or so west on Hwy. 200 – you’ll find it easily at the junction of Hwy. 71 and Hwy. 200. On the drive north from Park Rapids on Hwy. 71 visitors can find several quaint shops and recreation areas to stop at along the way. Also, some fabulous restaurants are located just off of Hwy. 71 that are sure to satisfy any appetite. Itasca State Park encompasses Lake Itasca, the official source of the Mississippi River, and a scenic area of northern Minnesota that has remained relatively unchanged from its natural state. Today, the park totals more than 32,000 acres and includes more than 100 lakes. Stand under towering pines at Preacher’s Grove. Visit the Itasca Indian Cemetery or Wegmann’s Cabin, landmarks of centuries gone by. Camp under the stars, or stay the night at the historic Douglas Lodge or cabins. Explore Wilderness Drive past the 2,000-acre Wilderness Sanctuary, one of Minnesota’s seven National Natural Landmarks. But the main attraction will continue to be walking across the headwaters of the Mississippi River on stones at the JUNE/JULY 2021

mouth of Lake Itasca. But there are plenty of other activities to do at the park. Other outdoor activities include taking an excursion boat on Lake Itasca, exploring along Wilderness Drive, biking or hiking along more than 30 miles of designated trails, fishing in one of the many lakes, observing the wild flowers in season as well as birding. Like the entire Park Rapids area, wildlife can be seen throughout the park. Recreation VOLUNTEERS MAINTAIN SCENIC NORTH COUNTRY TRAIL The North Country National Scenic Trail is one of 11 National Scenic Trails in the U.S. and the only one in Minnesota. The North Country Trail runs 4,600 miles from New York to North Dakota. Being open to foot traffic only, Minnesota’s footpaths hold unimpeded travel for hikers, berry pickers, hunters, geocachers, cross country skiers and snowshoers. Short day hikes or overnight hikes are possible. Maps, events and suggested hikes are available at www.northcountrytrail.org Anyone walking this trail is in for a treat as it meanders through forested hills and valleys interspersed with rivers, lakes, and numerous wetlands.

Later in the summer, you can be rewarded by finding wild strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and blueberries along the trail. Do you enjoy hiking and are you looking for a group to hike with on a regular basis? Join the North Country Trail hiking groups Laurentian Lakes and Itasca

Moraine Chapters. The area’s segments of the North Country Trail are maintained by these two chapters. For information regarding the Laurentian Lakes Chapter, email llc@northcountrytrail.org. For more information on the Itasca Moraine Chapter, contact Eric Haugland by email at itm@northcountrytrail.org. At most locations, there is a kiosk or signboard with information about the trail. Hiking distances to the nearest kiosk are also provided. A “Guide to Hiking the North Country Trail in Minnesota” guidebook is available in bookstores in Park Rapids, Itasca State Park, Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge and online.

WILDFLOWERS TO SEE IN THE HEARTLAND LAKES AREA From late spring to early fall, the woods, fields and road edges in the Park Rapids and Mississippi Headwaters area are a riot of spectacular shapes and colors. Interpretive naturalist Connie Cox with Itasca State Park has shared some pointers for spotting some of summertime’s most beautiful wildflowers. But be careful where you step – sometimes, while you’re pausing to look at one bloom, you may be treading on another. In June, wild roses start to bloom, Cox said, along with highbush cranberry, arrowwood and dogwood, with their big, bright, white flower clusters. “I always tell people, right away at the start of spring, look for purple and white, and then start moving into yellow, and then the yellows and pinks that you would see in June,” she said. Moving into July, as the weather goes from warm to hot, some of those yellow flowers include brown-eyed Susans – a daisy relative. “A lot of these flowers are going to like more open areas,” said Cox, “what we call sun-dappled, where the sun filters through the trees.” Also appearing in July are such flowers as the wild lily of the valley and Solomon’s seal. Cox described them as bright clusters of tiny, white flowers sharing a stem. “You’ll see sarsaparilla, which is JUNE/JULY 2021

Canada dogwood, also known as bunchberry, blooms approximately from mid-June through early July. odd-shaped,” she said. “It sometimes looks like a little of golf ball with many small flowers on it.” Moving into July, the next orchid people look for is Minnesota’s state flower, the showy lady’s slipper. “We usually say, around Fathers’ Day is when you can start looking for that flower,” said Cox, specifying a range from mid-June to the first week of July. Compared to the yellow, she described the showy as “large, pink and 24

white. It tends to be in areas that tend to have a little more moisture. … They like their feet wet.” She said the showy can mix with hardwoods, or grow in swampy areas with a conifer mix, and vast numbers often bloom in wet roadside ditches along State Hwy. 34 and U.S. Hwy. 71. There’s even a Lady’s Slipper Scenic Byway, running from the Walker area to Blackduck – so named because of the sheer number of showies that grow in the ditches along that route. Cox urged caution, however, because “when you’re driving a car, you have other vehicles on the road as well, and you don’t want to be pulling over and causing issues that way.” She also warned that, at the same time the showy is in bloom, people wading into the grass to photograph them may inadvertently crush something equally beautiful. “Oftentimes in the same area is another orchid – the northern bog orchid, or green bog orchid,” said Cox. “It looks like a grass stem, and the flower is tinier than your pinky fingernail. Oftentimes people don’t notice it because they’re distracted by the beauty of the showy, and they’re missing an equally beautiful, small flower, which sometimes can get stepped on. But again, they like to be a little wetter.” PARK RAPIDS ENTERPRISE

Recreation WONDERFUL ‘SHROOMS FOUND YEAR-ROUND The mushroom wasn’t just a hit at the party because he was a “fun guy.” He was also delicious. The Heartland Lakes Area is a great place to spot weird and beautiful life forms from the kingdom Fungi – and if you know what to look for, you might find some of them tasty. Dr. Jonathan Schilling, a fungal biologist with the University of Minnesota and director of the Itasca Biological Station and Laboratory, pronounces “fungi” with a soft g, spoiling that sorry pun. But he recently shared some pointers about mushrooms, from species that many folks look for to ones that might not be so well known.

Train wrecker: a yummy killer A less well known mushroom that also comes out in May and June is the “train wrecker” (Neolentinus lepideus). “Once you start seeing it, you’ll notice it in a lot of places, like inside Itasca State Park on dead pine trees,” said Schilling. “It looks kind of like a big version of a portobello mushroom, but the gills are not brown like a portobello; they’re white.” The white gills are a bit of a trick. Schilling noted that many mushroom species with white gills are very toxic,

Golden chanterelle (Cantharellus cibarius) but in fact the train wrecker is edible; he actually used the word “yummy” to describe it. At the same time, the train wrecker is a bit of a killer. “It causes a decay in the wood that makes the wood lose its strength really fast,” said Schilling. “It used to be a problem in railroad ties.” When a train rolls over railroad tracks, he explained, it puts pressure on the supporting wooden ties. If Neolentinus lepideus has been growing in that wood, the force could break the ties, sometimes causing the rails to come undone and wrecking the train. Hence its popular name. There are two vehicle pull-offs in Itasca Park for trees that used to be the tallest of their kind in Minnesota – a red pine whose top blew off many years ago, and a white pine that shattered two years ago in a gust of straight-line wind. “I, along with two of the students in my laboratory group, happened to be there at the biological station, and we went over and took samples of the tree, kind of like it was a crime scene,” said Schilling. “We identified that fungus as being the one that made the tree snap. So, it was the train wrecker that took out the top 41 feet of the white pine in the state park.” 26

Tasty and beneficial One of Schilling’s favorite summer mushrooms is the golden chanterelle (Cantharellus cibarius). “They’re one of my favorite mushrooms,” he said. “To me, they have a little bit of apricot flavor and smell to them. They’re good with goat cheese and pasta.” Schilling said they tend to grow in clusters on the ground, forming mutually beneficial relationships called mycorrhizae with tree roots and with other plants, such as the bigleaf aster – a wildflower that he likes to call “logger’s toilet paper” in honor of how it can be used. “I don’t know why, but a lot of time I’ll see those, and those golden chanterelles will be next to there,” said Schilling. “Myco means fungus and rhizae means roots. I think they estimate that 90 percent of all the trees, or all land plants, have these kinds of associations with their roots, to help get nutrients.” For example, he said, chanterelles get some carbon from the tree, and give back some phosphorus or nitrogen. “I just love those,” he said. “We’ll usually eat a lot of chanterelles over the course of the summer, in my family.” PARK RAPIDS ENTERPRISE

Arts & Entertainment 2ND STREET STAGE ENTERTAINS WITH LIVE MUSIC Join the great community get-together for the summer music series, 2nd Street Stage,Thursday nights from June 24 through Aug. 19. Event dates are subject to change and audiences will be asked to follow COVID-19 guidelines. Organizers are planning for the worst and hoping for the best, according to a news release. The Park Rapids Downtown Business Association hosts the free, outdoor concerts from 6 to 8 p.m. with bands, a beer garden and family activities downtown. Bring your own lawn chair. The beer garden opens at 5 p.m. for a social hour. Support this event by buying an official 2021 button and receive $2 off all beverages at the beer garden. To see the complete summer line up, go to www.parkrapidsdowntown.com. June 24 - Boss Mama and the Jebberhooch Boss Mama (Colleen Myhre) is a Mahtowa, Minn., country/Mississippi

blues/soul singer/songwriter who pours out her heart with every note. Her songwriting ranges from honest emotion and earthly imagery to the raucousness of horses, strippers and whiskey. Myhre possesses the ability to hypnotize listeners by creating sympathy between her voice and guitar that resonates a true American and northern Minnesota spirit. For this show, she is backed by her band, The Jebberhooch, a mixture of musicians from different bands. July 1 - the 4onthefloor The 4ontheFloor will be back! Joining together in the name of fun and joy, the 4onthefloor bring their welloiled, high-octane, rock ’n roll to the world. The furious delivery ebbs and flows with sing-a-long anthems and breakdowns to soaring guitar solos and unbridled full-bore rock. Camaraderie is a common theme. Hailing from Minnesota, they take the heavy road route, grooving in the tracks of road musicians

before them. Following in the footsteps of some of the band’s influences, being on the road plays a large role in the writing. Gabriel Douglas writes about experiences, failures, successes and notso-much the what-could-have beens. July 8 - Pat Lenertz Band Moorhead native Pat Lenertz is a veteran of the Fargo/Moorhead scene with 15 years experience playing, singing and fronting several bands. Whether it’s onstage at The Hub belting out Bob Marley covers backed by a nine-piece reggae tribute act or strapping on an acoustic and kicking off the HPR Best Bets winning open mic night at the Sidestreet Bar and Grille, he is comfortable commanding the attention of any space. Drawing on his love for Americana and roots musicians like Willie Nelson, Wilson Pickett, Bill Withers, John Prine and Bob Dylan, Lenertz found the perfect band of brothers to help tell his musical stories.

Northern Light Opera Company The Northern Light Opera Company (NLOC) marks the 20th year of producing professional, quality music theater in the Heartland Lakes area. NLOC presents “PIPPIN” at the Park Rapids Armory Arts & Events Center, July 30 through August 7. NLOC’s directors were inspired by Pippin’s rustic magic and the cheekiness in Stephen Schwartz’s score. A fun part of the show will be the ensemble, or “Band of Players,” who play many zany roles. Pippin is eldest son and heir to Emperor Charlemagne’s throne. His story is a journey to find the secret of true happiness and fulfillment. The adventure leads to glories of the battlefields, time spent in debauchery,

intrigues of political powers, and finally he finds true happiness in the unextraordinary moments that happen every day. 2021’s challenges are still unknown, but plans are to continue with the NLOKids camp at the end of June into July for 9-13 year olds. For three weeks, equal number of kids from Pine Point and Park Rapids write the script, compose music and build sets and costumes for an original musical to perform for parents and friends. Registration will be handled by Park Rapids Schools Community Education. Go to www.northernlightopera.org for further details.
