Best season ever. We didn’t spend months planning the perfect summer activities. Or drive to the cabin every Friday night with a kayak secured to the car’s roof. But the crude oil we transport was turned into the equipment that makes summer… well, summer. When the energy you invest in life meets the energy we fuel it with, summer fun happens.

Whether you’re looking for fish simply for fun and the relaxation of dropping a line on a beautiful, summer day or wanting to take part in a competitive tournament, you’re sure to find what you want in Hubbard County. Once the fishing opener takes place in May, the lakes come alive as walleye

anglers join those already out angling for panfish. Walleyes, bluegills, crappies, sunfish, rock bass and perch, even trout, swim in these waters, so take your pick. Whether you catch off the dock, from shore or pull fish into a boat, it’s all about creating memories in lakes and pines area. Summer fishing can be as simple as hanging out on the dock and snapping a photo with a big catch.

Fishing is a family sport – for the youngster with his or her first rod and reel, the avid angler or an entire family on vacation visiting one of the many lakes and resorts. Check in at one of the local bait shops for tips on hot spots, best bait and lures, fishing style and time of day for whichever lake you’re heading out to fish.

ITASCA STATE PARK IS JEWEL OF MINNESOTA Itasca State Park – Minnesota’s oldest state park – was established on April 20, 1891 to preserve the old growth pine trees that were in danger of being logged. More than half a million people visit Itasca State Park every year to see the giant pines and wade across the headwaters of the Mississippi River State Water Trail. Park Rapids is the undisputed Gateway to Itasca State Park and the south entrance is a 22-mile drive from Park Rapids north on Hwy. 71. The east entrance is only a couple miles farther north of the south entrance, and then another mile or so west on Hwy. 200 – you’ll find it easily at the junction of Hwy. 71 and Hwy. 200. On the drive north from Park Rapids on Hwy. 71 visitors can find several quaint shops and recreation areas JULY/AUGUST 2021

to stop at along the way. Also, some fabulous restaurants are located just off of Hwy. 71 that are sure to satisfy any appetite. Itasca State Park encompasses Lake Itasca, the official source of the Mississippi River, and a scenic area of northern Minnesota that has remained relatively unchanged from its natural state. Today, the park totals more than 32,000 acres and includes more than 100 lakes. Stand under towering pines at Preacher’s Grove. Visit the Itasca Indian Cemetery or Wegmann’s Cabin, landmarks of centuries gone by. Camp under the stars, or stay the night at the historic Douglas Lodge or cabins. Explore Wilderness Drive past the 2,000-acre Wilderness Sanctuary, one of Minnesota’s seven National Natural Landmarks. 22

But the main attraction will continue to be walking across the headwaters of the Mississippi River on stones at the mouth of Lake Itasca. But there are plenty of other activities to do at the park. Other outdoor activities include taking an excursion boat on Lake Itasca, exploring along Wilderness Drive, biking or hiking along more than 30 miles of designated trails, fishing in one of the many lakes, observing the wild flowers in season as well as birding. Like the entire Park Rapids area, wildlife can be seen throughout the park. For more information about the park events and schedules, call Itasca State Park headquarters at 218-6997251, email itasca.statepark@state. mn.us or go to www.dnr.state.mn.us/ state_parks/itasca/index.html. Recreation HUNT FOR THESE MIDSUMMER WILDFLOWER SHOW-STOPPERS From late spring to early fall, the woods, fields and road edges in the Park Rapids and Mississippi Headwaters area are a riot of spectacular shapes and colors. Interpretive naturalist Connie Cox with Itasca State Park has shared some pointers for spotting some of summertime’s most beautiful wildflowers. But be careful where you step – sometimes, while you’re pausing to look at one bloom, you may be treading on another. As the showy lady’s slipper finishes its run, typically around the week of July 4, the wildflower scene moves on to some of the area’s larger, more brilliant-colored flowers on land and water. “Things you would start seeing would be like swamp milkweed,” said Cox, noting that as the name implies, it grows in swamps. “It’s a deep, rich, reddish violet color.” People canoeing on ponds, lakes and backwaters may also spot beautiful, white water lilies and the yellow bullhead pond lily. Also along the shoreline grows the spotted touch-me-not. “I always say it looks like a little cornucopia,” said Cox, “because the flower looks like a little horn laying on its side, and in the very back is a little nectar area that is designed for moths and butterflies.” The touch-me-not gets its name from how it ejects its seeds. “It’s very touchy, so to speak,” she said. “The slightest amount of pressure on its seed pod causes its seeds to shoot out.” Growing in dry areas, meanwhile, are the spreading dogbane, leadplant, blue giant hyssop and harebell. “Harebells are a tiny, purple, bellshaped flower growing in some of the driest, sandy soils that you can find,” said Cox. Also starting to show their colors will be yellow and white sweet clover, red clover, meadow rue and tall JULY/AUGUST 2021

meadow rue – “a plant that can be three, four feet tall, almost,” she said. “People don’t even recognize the flower because its pistils and stamens are all that dangle down from it. It doesn’t really have petals, but people see these feathery things dangling and fluttering in the wind.” Though most goldenrod species are a sign that fall is coming, certain early goldenrods begin to flower in July. Among the orchids blooming in wet bogs are the green adder’s mouth, 24

often in company with tamarack and basswood. “If you can find areas where there are walking trails into the bogs, that’s where you can start seeing some of these other, small orchids coming up,” said Cox. In boggy areas that have a lot of moss, such as sphagnum, you may also see such flowers as pink pyrola (also known as bog wintergreen) and common shinleaf, whose leaves are often seen in forests that have or once had pine in them. Also, the one-flowered wintergreen, as the name suggests, produces only one flower per plant. These plants’ leaves tend to stay green year-round, protected by a waxy coating that allows them to grow in very dry or nutrient-poor soil. “But they do produce a beautiful flower,” said Cox, describing them as fingertip-sized flowers that stand only 1-3 inches off the ground. “People have to learn to look for not just the big, but for the small.” It’s easy to be distracted, with so many bigger and shower things about, such as daisy fleabane – a daisy-like flower with feathery, purple petals; the brilliant orange-red Indian paintbrush; and blue flag iris growing alongside streams. Finally, Cox sang the praises of the Joe Pye weed, named after an Indigenous man who was skilled in herbal healing. “Joe Pye Weed is a very robust, purple flower cluster,” she said. “Huge. Open your hand up as wide as you can, and the flower is like bigger than your hand. But it’s an excellent one for watching butterflies. … It’s an opportunity to enjoy those pollinators – bumblebees, other bee species, as well as butterflies. They love Joe Pye weed.” Like milkweed, Joe Pye Weed produces lots of nectar that insects love, as well as pollen. PARK RAPIDS ENTERPRISE

Recreation WONDERFUL ‘SHROOMS FOUND YEAR-ROUND Schilling. “Myco means fungus and rhizae means roots. I think they estimate that 90 percent of all the trees, or all land plants, have these kinds of associations with their roots, to help get nutrients.” For example, he said, chanterelles get some carbon from the tree, and give back some phosphorus or nitrogen. “I just love those,” he said. “We’ll usually eat a lot of chanterelles over the course of the summer, in my family.”

Chicken of the woods Golden chanterelle (Cantharellus cibarius) Courtesy Dr. Jonathan Schilling

The mushroom wasn’t just a hit at the party because he was a “fun guy.” He was also delicious. The Heartland Lakes Area is a great place to spot weird and beautiful life forms from the kingdom Fungi – and if you know what to look for, you might find some of them tasty. Dr. Jonathan Schilling, a fungal biologist with the University of Minnesota and director of the Itasca Biological Station and Laboratory, pronounces “fungi” with a soft g, spoiling that sorry pun. But he recently shared some pointers about mushrooms, from species that many folks look for to ones that might not be so well known.

A well-known type of mushroom that emerges in late July to early August is known as the chicken of the woods or sulfur shelf (genus Laetiporus). The visible part of the mushroom, known as a sporophore, emerges from a wound on the side of a tree, usually oak. “It’s just bright orange,” said Schilling. “It doesn’t seem like something that would be edible, because a lot of the time you might think of really bright organisms as sending a warning to animals that they’re poisonous, but the chicken of the woods doesn’t have anything that looks like it, and it’s also delicious.” He said its similarity to chicken is mostly due to its texture, which pulls apart somewhat like baked chicken. “That one I love to put into a delicate gumbo, something like that. Some kind of delicate dish.”

Welcome to Walker

Tasty and beneficial

One of Schilling’s favorite summer mushrooms is the golden chanterelle (Cantharellus cibarius). “They’re one of my favorite mushrooms,” he said. “To me, they have a little bit of apricot flavor and smell to them. They’re good with goat cheese and pasta.” Schilling said they tend to grow in clusters on the ground, forming mutually beneficial relationships called mycorrhizae with tree roots and with other plants, such as the bigleaf aster – a wildflower that he likes to call “logger’s toilet paper” in honor of how it can be used. “I don’t know why, but a lot of time I’ll see those, and those golden chanterelles will be next to there,” said

Arts & Entertainment QUALITY THEATRE, MUSIC SET TO ENTERTAIN Noon Hour Concerts The Noon Hour Concert summer series will commence after being postponed last summer because of COVID-19. All concerts are from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. COVID guidelines will be followed and there will be no social time. The summer concert schedule is as follows: ▶ July 8: A brass group at Calvary Lutheran Church with musicians Craig Swartz, trumpet; Ryan Webber, trombone; Brennan Paulsen, tuba; Eve Sumsky, horn; and Kyle Riess, trumpet. ▶ July 15: Eric Haugen on cello and flautist Claire Gunsbury at Calvary Lutheran Church.

Northern Light Opera Company The Northern Light Opera Company (NLOC) marks the 20th year of producing professional, quality music theater

in the Heartland Lakes area. NLOC presents “PIPPIN” at the Park Rapids Armory Arts & Events Center, July 30 through August 7. NLOC’s directors were inspired by Pippin’s rustic magic and the cheekiness in Stephen Schwartz’s score. A fun part of the show will be the ensemble, or “Band of Players,” who play many zany roles. Pippin is eldest son and heir to Emperor Charlemagne’s throne. His story is a journey to find the secret of true happiness and fulfillment.

The adventure leads to glories of the battlefields, time spent in debauchery, intrigues of political powers, and finally he finds true happiness in the unextraordinary moments that happen every day. 2021’s challenges are still unknown, but plans are to continue with the NLOKids camp at the end of June into July for 9-13 year olds. For three weeks, equal number of kids from Pine Point and Park Rapids write the script, compose music and build sets and costumes for an original musical to perform for parents and friends. Registration will be handled by Park Rapids Schools Community Education. Go to www.northernlightopera.org for further details.

Arts & Entertainment REMARKABLE ARTWORK AT NEMETH ART CENTER For more than 40 years, the Nemeth Art Center (NAC) has been providing exceptional art opportunities to the Park Rapids area. Admission is free to the NAC galleries, which are open and free to the public on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. May through September. The NAC’s permanent collection of over 40 European paintings spans six centuries. Alec South’s exhibit, “Paris,Minnesota” is on view from July 22 through Oct. 2. Of his photography, South says, “The more I worked in Paris, the more aware I was of my identity as a lifelong Minnesotan. Rather than being ashamed of this, I wanted to make it part of the project. Fashion is simply the way we present ourselves to the world. For me, the fashion choices of someone in Duluth are as worthy of investigation as those of someone in Paris. I’d go further and say I feel this way about culture generally.” Rachel Collier’s exhibit, called “Soft Landing,” will also be shown July 22 through Oct. 2.

She is an interdisciplinary artist living and working in Minneapolis. Collier says her recent work “reflects her desire to be released from the confines of traditional painting materials. Her paintings arrange elements created from various studio practices and are imbued with a search for joy and newness.” In 2020, she has introduced rug tufting to her practice and is hand dyeing her wool and nylon.

An artist’s reception for both South and Collier will be held 4-6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 21. The Nemeth Art Center is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization. It is located upstairs in the historic Hubbard County Courthouse, located at 301 Court Ave. For more information about upcoming exhibits and membership privileges, visit www.nemethartcenter.org.
