July 22 - Rich Mattson and the Northstars

Noon Hour Concerts

The Noon Hour Concert summer series will commence after being postponed last summer because of COVID-19.

All concerts are from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. COVID guidelines will be followed and there will be no social time.

The summer concert schedule is as follows: ▶ July 8: A brass group at Calvary Lutheran Church with musicians Craig Swartz, trumpet; Ryan Webber, trombone; Brennan Paulsen, tuba; Eve Sumsky, horn; and Kyle Riess, trumpet. ▶ July 15: Eric Haugen on cello and flautist Claire Gunsbury at Calvary Lutheran Church. Northern Light Opera Company

The Northern Light Opera Company (NLOC) marks the 20th year of producing professional, quality music theater in the Heartland Lakes area.

NLOC presents “PIPPIN” at the Park Rapids Armory Arts & Events Center, July 30 through August 7. NLOC’s directors were inspired by Pippin’s rustic magic and the cheekiness in Stephen Schwartz’s score. A fun part of the show will be the ensemble, or “Band of Players,” who play many zany roles.

Pippin is eldest son and heir to Emperor Charlemagne’s throne. His story is a journey to find the secret of true happiness and fulfillment. The adventure leads to glories of the battlefields, time spent in debauchery, intrigues of political powers, and finally he finds true happiness in the unextraordinary moments that happen every day. 2021’s challenges are still unknown, but plans are to continue with the NLOKids camp at the end of June into July for 9-13 year olds. For three weeks, equal number of kids from Pine Point and Park Rapids write the script, compose music and build sets and costumes for an original musical to perform for parents and friends. Registration will be handled by Park Rapids Schools Community Education.

REMARKABLE ARTWORK AT NEMETH ART CENTER

For more than 40 years, the Nemeth Art Center (NAC) has been providing exceptional art opportunities to the Park Rapids area.

Admission is free to the NAC galleries, which are open and free to the public on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. May through September.

The NAC’s permanent collection of over 40 European paintings spans six centuries.

Alec South’s exhibit, “Paris,Minnesota” is on view from July 22 through Oct. 2.

Of his photography, South says, “The more I worked in Paris, the more aware I was of my identity as a lifelong Minnesotan. Rather than being ashamed of this, I wanted to make it part of the project. Fashion is simply the way we present ourselves to the world. For me, the fashion choices of someone in Duluth are as worthy of investigation as those of someone in Paris. I’d go further and say I feel this way about culture generally.”

Rachel Collier’s exhibit, called “Soft Landing,” will also be shown July 22 through Oct. 2.

She is an interdisciplinary artist living and working in Minneapolis. Collier says her recent work “reflects her desire to be released from the confines of traditional painting materials. Her paintings arrange elements created from various studio practices and are imbued with a search for joy and newness.” In 2020, she has introduced rug tufting to her practice and is hand dyeing her wool and nylon.

An artist’s reception for both South and Collier will be held 4-6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 21.

The Nemeth Art Center is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization. It is located upstairs in the historic Hubbard County Courthouse, located at 301 Court Ave. For more information about upcoming exhibits and membership privileges, visit www.nemethartcenter.org.
