This ship sank before it even left the Chicago River on July 24, 1915 and killed 844 people. It is one of the worst disasters in American history, yet hardly anyone knows about it. It has been called “America’s Forgotten Tragedy.” John Boda has researched this event in great detail with many interesting facts, stories, and pictures. He also has a very personal connection: his grandmother and two great aunts were all on board, but managed to escape and live long lives. He produced two videos on this event, now posted on YouTube, and continues involvement in the annual memorial. Many Chicagoans today have direct connections from family to this event, yet few know anything more than a ship turned over that morning. Registration deadline: November 25. Why was this considered the last chivalric war and the first modern war? Our speaker is a member of the Illinois 64th Volunteer Infantry Regiment, and will wear and discuss the uniform and weapons of a Union soldier as he highlights several major battlefield sites via slides. The Our Lady of the Angels School fire broke out shortly before classes were to be dismissed on Monday, December 1, 1958, in the basement near the foot of a stairway in the Our Lady of the Angels School in Chicago, Illinois. The elementary school was operated by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago and had an enrollment of approximately 1,600 students. A total of 92 pupils and 3 nuns ultimately lost their lives when smoke, heat, fire, and toxic gasses cut off their normal means of escape through corridors and stairways. Join historian Jim Gibbons as he respectfully revisits this tragedy that changed fire codes in the US. Lunch is catered. Registration deadline: December 9.
