Tips for Successful Fall Planting!

Gaillardia ‘Oranges & Lemons’ (See page 44)

• When your roses arrive, take them out of the box and water them thoroughly. • Choose a well-drained location that receives at least 4 to 6 hours of direct sun each day. Dig a hole at least two times the size of the rootball, then mix the native soil with a generous amount of compost or other organic material and set it aside. Add superphosphate or bone meal to stimulate production of roots. A week after planting, fertilize with our specially formulated Jackson & Perkins slow-release rose fertilizer. • Remove your rose from its container, gently loosen the rootball at the bottom and sides, place it into the hole so that the bud union sits 1 to 2 inches below soil level, and fill the hole with the remaining soil. • Water thoroughly, then mulch heavily around the base for winter protection. Your roses will arrive lightly pruned, so it is not imperative that you do any additional pruning before winter.

Here’s a quick and easy way to grow your favorite varieties. Instead of planting dormant bareroots, order our containergrown roses and receive them potted up and already beginning to leaf out. Container-grown roses are easy to transplant into the garden, large flowerpots, or other containers—just dig a hole slightly larger than the pot, remove the rose from the pot, pop the rose into the hole, and water thoroughly. They’re ready to take off in your landscape!

What an apt name for this sweet new rose! Each clean white bloom has just the slightest flush of pink at the center, bringing to mind a fluffy summer cloud being painted with the first color of the setting sun. Giant Picture-perfect Blooms The most popular variety of rose, Hybrid Teas are characterized by their large, high-centered buds, classically formed blooms, and stiffly upright habit. They have long been favored for small gardens in formal situations, and their exquisitely shaped flowers, typically borne singly on long, strong stems, continue to make them the standard rose of the floral industry. Hybrid Teas are the perfect “florist shop rose”, but they’re equally rewarding adorning your garden!

an Explosion of Color!

No other roses deliver as much color as floribundas. Jackson & Perkins introduced the original “manyflowered” landscaping rose, and we’re still the world’s leader in producing award-winning varieties. Floribundas are lower-growing than hybrid teas and bloom heavily, producing clusters of flowers from June until frost. Use floribundas in a mass planting or in borders, and be sure to snip some of the blooms for dazzling bouquets!

Climbing Rose

Huge, fragrant red blooms arise on vigorous canes, banked by glossy, dark green foliage. Quickly reaching 10 to 12 feet tall, this is the climbing rose you want draped over the patio wall, twining up the arbor, or festooning a trellis. If you saw these 3- to 4-inch blooms without the plant, you’d probably assume they were exhibitionquality hybrid teas. Packed with 30 to 35 petals and boasting a true red hue that won’t fade, they’re superb cut flowers. Own-root rose. ‘Zéphirine Drouhin’

Climbing Rose

A favorite since its 1868 introduction, this romantic, fantastically fragrant, old-fashioned rose blooms in both spring and fall, with loose, semi-double blossoms of vivid cerise-carmine. It grows vigorously to 15 to 20 feet and, remarkable for any rose, performs well in shade—excellent for north-facing walls and areas with little sunlight. This beloved climber also tolerates poor soil and pollution better than most roses. Own-root rose. ‘Sally Holmes’ Climbing Rose

Often generously reblooming at summer’s end, this big, vigorous, disease-resistant rose is a gardener’s dream, as much for its versatility (it can be grown as either a climber or a shrub) as for its abundant blooms! The 2-inch blooms are single and held in huge, snowball-shaped clusters. The buds are ivory, opening to pinkishwhite blooms sporting a cheery boss of yellow stamens in the center. While they look quite delicate, the flowers are actually very long-lasting and non-fading, standing up to hot climates that melt others. Send it scrambling up arbors, the sides of buildings and walls, or strong trellises! Own-root rose. Turn your

Garden into a Birdwatcher’s Paradise!

Mexican Sunflower Feeder

Add to the natural beauty of your garden by bringing in birds and butterflies! Birdbaths provide fresh drinking water as well as a clean source of water in which birds can bathe and cool down during hot days. Butterflies also appreciate having a place they can safely rest and drink. (See our butterfly-attracting plants on pages 44-45.) Water is equally important for birds during winter, and a de-icer can help keep it readily available. (Be sure to clean birdbaths and change water regularly!) Different types of feeders allow you to provide everything from seeds to mealworms, which will attract a wide variety of species, from sparrows to woodpeckers. And don't forget to put up a few bird houses, so your feathered friends will have a safe, comfortable place to raise their young!

Finishing the Tulip season, this Single Late, granted the Award of Merit by the Royal General Bulb Growers Association in 1944, presents its blooms on 20to 24-inch stems in late spring and is as long-lasting in the vase as the garden.

Dicentra spectabilis

An old-fashioned garden favorite for years! The common name, Bleeding Heart, refers to the protruding inner petals of the flower, which resemble a “bleeding heart.” It bursts into flower in late spring, dangling 1-inch bright-pink blooms from long, arching stems that are just perfect as cut flowers. The plants typically grow 2 to 3 feet tall, forming a bushy, upright mound of graceful, soft green foliage, with a somewhat ferny appearance. Solberg in 2002, it has been named a Designer Hosta™ for superior performance in a wide range of climates. Z 3-8 / Early summer / 16-24” H x 36” W Part shade to shade
