Fall is the Time to Plant! There is no better time for planting all sorts of exciting things in your garden! Trees, shrubs, and perennials are best planted in fall, as the cooler temperatures and more frequent rainfall provide the optimal conditions for them to become established. The roots have time to develop and will continue growing right into winter, while the leafy portion of the plants slow down for winter dormancy. These well-established plants have then completed all of the hard work before spring arrives, and it’s time to put on new growth. Fall is also the perfect time to plant spring-blooming bulbs. Gardeners dreaming of drifts of Daffodils and tulips can prepare those displays in autumn to enjoy in spring. (See pg 49 for a quick and easy bulb-planting tip.) Fall is also your second season of vegetable harvest. Starting your cool-season crops at the end of summer allows for an additional rotation of fresh garden veggies before winter settles in.

Peonies–Long-lasting Garden Beauties! One of the longest-living perennials, Peonies can literally last for generations! Exceptionally carefree once established, these gorgeous plants offer three seasons of beauty, with colorful spring and fall foliage and blooms in various shades of yellow, white, pink, rose, crimson, scarlet, or purple. The single, double, or semi-double blooms can even display more than one color and are often deliciously fragrant! Equally suited for the garden or the vase, Peonies provide old-fashioned charm plus armloads of stunning blooms.

Peony Angel Cheeks (Paeonia lactiflora) The underside of each pink petal is striped red! A stunning pink “bomb” from Carl Klehm! These blooms are 5 inches wide, packed with petals, and boast red stripes on the underside! Arising in midseason, they are pleasantly fragrant and just right for cutting. The plant is stocky and strong, too, with disease-resistant foliage and good cold-hardiness. Happy in any good garden soil, Angel Cheeks is ideal for the border or as an accent planting! Bareroot. Peony Abalone Pearl

(Paeonia lactiflora) An early-blooming Peony with semi-double flowers that change color as they mature! Begin the Peony season with one of the most colorful and fascinating varieties ever to come along—semi-double Abalone Pearl, from master Peony breeder, William Krekler. These coral-to-pink-washed, lightly fragrant blooms begin as fat 3-inch coral globes, then burst open to reveal colorful yellow anthers in the center of 6 inches of glorious color-drenched petals! Coral buds begin to swell on this plant in mid-spring, and the blooms continue right up to summer. Perfect for cutting, they are borne on long, sturdy stems and keep both their color and form beautifully, indoors or out. Abalone Pearl reaches 32 inches tall over 5 to 10 years, then continues to bloom for decades. This very early bloomer is floriferous and so colorful—a wonderful, longlasting choice for the border, as an accent planting, or as a stunning specimen! Bareroot. Peony Scarlet O’Hara

(Paeonia lactiflora) Their strong, sweet scent has been compared to roses! Giant double blooms of pink-blushed cream fill the garden with a rose-like perfume on this compact Peony. If you love cut flowers, you simply must grow Moon River. The blooms open in late spring in most climates, though in the far north they may delay until early summer. Very profuse, they release a strong, sweet scent that has been compared to roses. It’s magnificent indoors or out, and a single stem perfumes a room! The large, finely formed, full-petalled flowers are carried on short, strong stems and stand out beautifully against the dark green foliage. Growing 30 to 36 inches high and wide, this is a long-lived perennial, very easy to care for. Give it sunshine and good soil drainage and it will bloom for decades, all the way up into zone 2! Bareroot. [Perennial] Sun

(Paeonia lactiflora x officinalis) One of the earliest blooming! If you have despaired of growing Peonies in your warm-climate garden, Scarlet O’Hara is the early-blooming wonder you’ve been looking for! Bred in 1956 by the hybridizers of the classic Red Charm, this ultra-vigorous, heat-tolerant hybrid flourishes in climates where other Peonies fail to flower. And once you see these large, radiant blooms, you will be sold for life! The secrets are vigor and root strength. This plant’s deep roots tap the water table and keep aboveground growth robust. Mild winters are no problem, and you can rely on a heavy bloom in mid-spring. Scarlet O’Hara reaches about 3 feet tall and wide, with good branching, for a heavy show of buds and blooms. Bareroot. Fruits for the Home & Landscape Fruits and berries provide beautiful blooms and fragrance as well as delicious edibles. Today’s fruit varieties are far more versatile and compact than in the past, so even if you have no garden space left, you can grow a varied and attractive fruit crop on your deck or patio. Many can be moved indoors for winter north of their hardiness zone, bringing evergreen foliage and lovely texture right into your home!

Blueberry Chandler

HUGE Fruits the Size of Cherries! Blueberry Chandler

(Vaccinium corymbosum) Huge, rich, ultra-sweet berries ripen over a long season, so you get to enjoy fresh blueberries from your garden for up to two months! Not only are the berries exceptionally big, but the leaves are, too, and the bush is quite full and dense. This means it looks great in your flower bed if you don’t have room for a vegetable garden. The blazing fall color of the foliage is an extra dividend! Very easy to grow, blueberries like an acidic soil; they will be happy if you add some peat to your soil when you plant them. Huge, richly fragrant foot-long clusters of lilac-blue blossoms perfume the sunny garden, dangling from sturdy vines on pergolas, arbors, and other strong supports. It needs no pruning and is a vigorous, quick grower. 4-inch pot. [Vine] Sun | H-25’, W-5-6’ | Blooms: Early Spring-Late Summer | Z 4-9

Evergreens for

Year-round Color and Texture From deep winter to the heat of summer, most evergreens provide the same lovely color. Valued for their wonderful versatility, they can be used as specimens, hedges, or privacy screens. As foundation plantings, evergreens provide a year-round “finished look” for your landscape, offering texture and color that’s found nowhere else, as well as creating a lush backdrop for your flowering annuals and perennials!

Thuja Green Giant

(T. plicata x standishii) A fast-growing, carefree screen! Green Giant boasts dense, fragrant evergreen foliage from the ground up that never needs shearing. Ideal for a privacy screen, it’s easy to grow and very long-lived, with excellent deer, pest, and disease resistance. It grows best in full sun, but will tolerate light shade. Give it a year to settle in, then watch it take off! Our customers’ all-time favorite tree! 4-inch pot. [Tree] Sun-Part Shade | H-10-12’, W-30-50’

They’re fragrant and shapely -- but in heavy clay soil (which is what I planted them in), they only grow about 6 inches a year. Wind and ice and snow don’t seem to bother them at all -mine are set up as a wind break. - Matt from OH

Its lovely, full-bodied habit, which is very low, rounded, and dense, shears and shapes beautifully to any desired form—from topiary to an excellent, crisp low hedge. 4-inch pot. Trees and Shrubs

the Foundation of Your Garden

Trees and shrubs provide a distinctive architectural structure around which you can build the rest of your garden. Offering multi-season beauty in the form of colorful foliage and blooms as well as often creating unique silhouettes in the winter garden, their landscape value increases with each passing year!

Japanese Maple Corallinum (Acer palmatum) Remember the old saying about the weather—if you don’t like it, just wait 5 minutes and it’ll change? Well, that’s about the case with Corallinum, too! The leaves change more frequently than the seasons on this splendid little Japanese Maple, making it one of the most beloved small trees for the home landscape. This semi-dwarf tree has pink foliage in early spring, turning to red and light green through summer and then to scarlet in the fall. 1-gallon container. [Tree] Sun-Part Shade | H-5-6’, W-4-6’

(Heuchera sanguinea) Each large, heart-shaped, light green leaf on this compact, mounding plant is splashed with creamy-white, as if touched by summer snow. Grown for its clear deep-pink blooms as much as for its foliage, it’s very showy in containers, the front of the border, or as edging and accent. The flowers arise on strong, wiry stems 12 inches high. Untroubled by pests or diseases, this plant is easy to grow in any moist, well-drained soil. 4½-inch pot. Boot Trays

They’re the ideal size to accommodate several pairs of boots and umbrellas, or multiple potted plants, or a doggie dish or two, or anything else messy that you want to keep off your floor! Made of stainless steel or powder-coated galvanized steel, they’re reassuringly solid, but easy to wipe clean. They make a terrific gift and look great in the garage, on the porch, in the gardening shed, or right in your foyer. Give it a try . . . and give your broom a break! This plant is a trouble-free groundcover as well as a splendid choice for containers, retaining walls, the cracks between stones, and other dusty, drought-ridden sunny spots! 4-inch pot. Fall-planted Bulbs for glorious autumn and spring color Plant these bulbs in fall, before the first hard frost. They require a cold period in which to grow strong roots, so they can present you with their brilliant blooms! And remember that spring isn’t the only time for vibrantly colored flowers— Crocuses and Colchicums bloom throughout fall and winter, bringing welcome beauty to the garden as the weather starts to cool!

Allium Mount Everest (Allium stipitatum) Giant summer snowballs for the sunny garden! Like giant snowballs in summer, these massive 6- to 8-inch flowerheads are astonishing! A superb contrast to the pinks and purples of most other Alliums, Mount Everest complements any garden design or indoor arrangement. Allium’s huge, round flowerheads, covered with bright stars, are dramatic in the garden and very long-lasting (fresh or dried) in the vase. Easy to grow and very heat tolerant, they bloom readily during early summer in full sun and well-drained soil. Stems reach 45 inches tall. Space bulbs 15 to 18 inches apart. Bulb. Sun | H-3-4’,

(Narcissus) Very fragrant and a good forcer! Erlicheer is a sweetly fragrant, floriferous miniature with snowy double blooms dotted with a creamy center! This sturdy 10-inch plant supports 6 to 8 frilly, ruffled blooms on each stem. It will bloom in earliest spring, at the very beginning of Daffodil season. Or you may force it for winter bloom indoors—it has Tazetta ancestry (like the Paperwhites), and is very amenable to blooming on demand! Erlicheer was introduced in 1934 and has remained a popular favorite ever since. Its clean (never musky) scent, petal-packed blooms, and cluster-flowered habit are simply irresistible!
