armful emissions produced by diesel engines have received worldwide public attention in recent years.

This has led to many manufacturers researching various methods to achieve evermore stringent emissions targets.

Today, automotive manufacturers are implementing smarter technologies in order to reduce emissions.

One of these advanced methods is AdBlue; a clever chemical that provides a straightforward solution through a simple process for the end user.

Why is AdBlue being implemented in passenger vehicles?

The latest emissions regulations, referred to as Euro 6, came into force in 2016 and represented

a new challenge for the development of diesel engines. The main focus of this is looking for new ways to minimize nitrogen-oxide emissions.

The technology is referred to as ‘Selective Catalytic Reduction’, or SCR. This involves injecting precise amounts of a liquid (AdBlue) into the vehicle’s exhaust gases. The solution has existed in both the heavy commercial and agricultural fields for some time.

How does it work?

SCR technology injects tiny quantities of AdBlue into the vehicles exhaust. When this solution combines with these gasses it breaks down the harmful mono-nitrogen oxides, producing harmless nitrogen and oxygen as a by-product.

I

nteresting times in the industry, right? In the same month we’ve learnt that electric vehicle registrations in New Zealand are on the up, and that the Government is keen to see the back of offshore oil and gas exploration.

We’ve got a reputation overseas for leading the charge (if you’ll excuse the awful unintended pun) when it comes to adopting new technologies on a national scale. When you look at places like Norway, the Netherlands and even the UK though, we’re well behind the eight ball when it comes to electric vehicle ownership and public charging infrastructure.

That is changing though, as EVs get cheaper, have better battery ranges and the ability to plug them in for a recharge in places like Kaiwaka or Roxburgh or Masterton becomes more accessible.

Every manufacturer known to man is pursuing the fledgling EV market; Tesla became the byword for performance-themed long-range electric transport.

Other mainstream car brands have been playing catchup ever since. They are catching up though; pretty soon you won’t need to opt for a second-hand vehicle if you want an EV that doesn’t feature a price sticker starting with a six or a seven.

Of course, that also means workshops will change too. New skills, new infrastructure, new tools. Will we see the evolution of the EV specialist workshop in the next few years? Time will tell. The national fleet doesn’t look much different in 2018 than it did five years ago. But five years from now? That could be a whole other story.

This process makes it possible to reduce the emission of nitrogen oxides by more than 90% and can reduce fuel consumption by up to 7%.

What is AdBlue made of?

AdBlue is a colourless non-toxic liquid consisting of 32.5% automotive grade urea and de-mineralised water. Automotive grade urea is exceptionally pure, and a much higher grade than is used in fertilisers.

To ensure the product you use is correct to specification, look for ISO 22241 (ISO-22241-1, ISO22241-2, ISO-22241-3) on the packaging. This will ensure trouble free motoring and avoid potentially costly repairs.

What vehicles use AdBlue?

SCR technology is becoming increasingly commonplace, however isn’t yet fitted to every diesel car. If you’re working on a model newer than 2016, it’s highly likely it’ll use AdBlue. You can check for the AdBlue cap, commonly beside the fuel filler cap, although some cars have it internally concealed underneath the boot carpet.

There will also be a warning message or light on the dashboard when running low. As with a low-fuel warning light, there is no manual way of resetting it; only topping up the AdBlue to a minimum level will remove the warning. Adding an AdBlue check/topup to your technician’s service routine is a great way to increase sales and customer satisfaction.

Does the vehicle need AdBlue to run?

Technically, AdBlue isn’t required for the engine to work. However, because it keeps emissions within legal requirements, the engine is programmed to stop working or become speed limited to a maximum of 20km/h if there is insufficient AdBlue.

Usage varies between models and driving style, with the average tank lasting 12,000kms or about 1-litre per 1000kms as a rough guide.

Does AdBlue have a shelf-life?

AdBlue can last up to 18 months, provided it’s kept in optimal conditions (that is, out of direct sunlight and at a temperature between -6°c and 25°c).

If stored at a higher temperature or in a half-empty or vented container, the shelf-life can reduce dramatically to around six months, as airborne contaminants can affect the chemical composition.

For this reason, local distributor Partmaster stocks AdBlue in 10L bottles with convenient funnels to prevent contamination and wastage.

Is AdBlue harmful?

Although non-toxic, AdBlue is classed as corrosive and can cause irritation to skin, eyes and lungs.

Washing hands and any spills on the cars bodywork is recommended.

Otago Polytech announces wideranging EV service short courses OTAGO POLYTECHNIC IS ROLLING OUT A WIDE-RANGING SERIES OF ELECTRIC VEHICLE (EV) SHORT COURSES AND MICRO-CREDENTIALS AIMED AT MEETING THE GROWING DEMAND FOR EV TRAINING IN NEW ZEALAND

Vs are increasing in popularity as the benefits of the cleaner, cheaper mode of personal transportation starts to find mainstream acceptance outside of the smaller early-adopter enthusiast groups that made up the bulk of their audience just a few years ago.

There are currently 4000 EVs on the road in New Zealand. However, the Government has set a target of 64,000 EVs on New Zealand roads by the end of 2021.

As the national fleet of EVs grows, so will the need for effective learning and skills assessment within the automotive industry and related service areas.

With these targets and trends in mind, Otago Polytechnic has recently introduced a range of short courses focusing on EV servicing and repair.

At the end of each short course, learners are assessed and awarded an EduBit, Otago Polytechnic’s digital micro-credential assessment service. This enables learners to show what they know and have their learning recognized.

Comprising a fast-expanding suite of digital microcredentials, the learning and assessments are designed to fit around an employee’s work (with online, evening and weekend course delivery).

The short courses cover ‘Safe Practices’, ‘Drive System Diagnosis and Repair’, and ‘Battery Diagnosis and Repair’.

Phil Ker, Chief Executive, Otago Polytechnic, says the modules are ideal for those seeking a solid

understanding of EV operation.

“There is strong demand among those working in the automotive industry to increase their skills and knowledge base of EV technology,” he says.

“There are currently no legislative requirements around the servicing, warranting, and safety standards of EVs. However, certification for people working on EV’s is imminent.”

Both the EV Safe Practices online course and EduBit are aimed at all EV users, as well as anyone seeking an insight into health and safety requirements when working on, or around, electric vehicles.

MIA welcomes mandatory recall for at-risk Takata airbag inflators THE MOTOR INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION (MIA) HAS APPLAUDED A GOVERNMENT RULING ON THE MANDATORY RECALL OF TENS OF THOUSANDS OF ALPHA-TYPE TAKATA AIRBAG INFLATORS IN VEHICLES ON KIWI ROADS.

T

he Takata airbag recall is unprecedented in scale around the world. The recall, which is massive and is creating complex logistical challenges for affected manufacturers and distributors, includes mechanisms in new and used vehicles with two different types of Takata airbags.

The alpha type airbag inflator fitted to vehicles between 2001 and 2006 is more at risk of failure if activated than other types of Takata airbag inflators.

“Completion of the recall will require the cooperation of government and industry to undertake and the MIA welcomes the Government’s decision to make the alpha type airbag recall mandatory,” said David Crawford, Chief Executive Officer of the MIA. In March, the MIA undertook a stocktake of affected vehicles in New Zealand. This revealed that there are around 11,280 New Zealand new vehicles with the alpha-type inflator of which 6,485 have had

the inflator replaced, with 4,795 remaining to be completed.

However, 68,116 used vehicles with the alpha type inflator have now been accounted for. While 22,494 vehicles have had the inflator replaced, there remains another 45,622 to be completed.

The issue is exacerbated by importers of used vehicles who have continued to import vehicles which have not had recalls closed out in the country they are sourcing their vehicles from.

Mostly these vehicles have been proceeding through import compliance without checking and then are being on-sold to unsuspecting New Zealand consumers. It is then left up to New Zealand distributors to try and identify these vehicles and endeavour to manage a recall.

Contrary to common misunderstanding, under New Zealand legislation New Zealand distributors of new vehicles are not obliged to undertake recalls

of used imported vehicles. New Zealand consumer legislation places consumer obligations, including recalls, on the supplier of the goods, which in this case is the importer of the used vehicle.

“The MIA is not opposing imports of used vehicles, but these vehicles should not be on-sold to consumers with outstanding open recalls,” continues David Crawford.

“The MIA has a code of practice which encourages New Zealand Distributors to recall used imported vehicles when these vehicles have been imported prior to a recall being announced. However, the continued importation of used vehicles with a known recall in the market vehicles are being sourced from, places an unacceptable burden on consumers.”

The MIA has said it welcomes the Government’s decision to prevent any vehicle with an open recall from passing compliance and entry into the New Zealand fleet.

aste Management NZ opened New Zealand’s first workshop dedicated to converting diesel trucks into electric vehicles at the end of March.

The company plans to convert 20 of its national truck fleet in the next two years. The first conversion is almost complete, and the truck will be used to collect waste from Auckland Hospital. In addition, the workshop will also be available to other companies looking to transform their vehicles into EVs. Tom Nickels, Waste Management Managing Director, said the new workshop is a major step forward for both the company and electric vehicles in New Zealand.

“Our investment in the EV workshop will create a knowledge centre for EV conversion in New Zealand and will help us move towards our long-term goal of a fleet of fully electric vehicles,” he said.

“Our conversion partner EMOSS in the Netherlands has provided the kitsets and knowledge for our team to start completing conversions here in Auckland. We are also looking forward to helping other New Zealand businesses convert their fleets for a more sustainable future.”

The Government’s Low Emission Vehicles Contestable

Fund, administered by EECA, contributed $500,000 in 2017 to help build the workshop and convert the first two trucks as part of its commitment to EV development.

Waste Management announced its move towards a fleet of electric vehicles in September 2016 as part of its sustainability commitment.

Since then the company has launched the Southern Hemisphere’s first side-loader electric truck for residential wheelie bin waste collections, which has started work on Christchurch streets. Another side-loader electric truck will soon be in operation in Auckland.

This is in addition to the electric box body truck which started work in Auckland in November 2016. Waste Management has also added more than 20 electric cars within its light fleet during this time.

Waste Management states its electric vehicles can be ‘powered’ by waste through the use of sustainable landfill and energy parks. Here the company generates renewable electricity from the gases captured during the decomposition of waste that is collected.

Up to 95% of gas emissions are captured through this process, putting enough power back into the national grid to power over 18,000 homes nationally.

FURTHER EXTENSIONS TO THE RYCO FILTERS RANGE ARE DESIGNED TO HELP THE MECHANIC END-USER.

Turners signs five-year damaged vehicle deal with Suncorp DEAL SEES PRE-OWNED VEHICLE RETAILER HANDLING LOGISTICS FOR SALE OF DAMAGED VEHICLES WRITTEN OFF BY INSURERS.

urners Cars has signed a five-year agreement with Suncorp New Zealand to manage the logistics and sale of damaged vehicles that have been written off by Suncorp’s general insurance brands.

Greg Hedgepeth, CEO of Turners Group NZ, says that the ‘End of Life’ (EOL) car market is growing and that there is a significant opportunity for Turners to sell the older or damaged cars at the end of their life, alongside the newer used vehicles that are replacing them.

“Almost 30% of New Zealand’s 3.7 million light vehicle fleet is 20 years old or more, and older cars are now being replaced at a rapid rate,” said Mr Hedgepeth.

“Over 156,000 vehicles were either written off or removed from the road in New Zealand in the past year, and the number of vehicles from 1995 to 1999 now being scrapped is accelerating.

“The EOL and damaged vehicle division is a growing opportunity for Turners, and we are seeing good growth both here along with the rest of our business.”

Suncorp New Zealand has a large percentage of the EOL market, through vehicles written off by Vero, AMP, ANZ and AA Insurance.

March 2018 new vehicle registrations highest on record THE CAR MARKET MADE A STRONG RECOVERY IN MARCH, WITH TOYOTA LEADING THE GAME

fter a static February, the New Zealand new car market recovered during March, with the highest figures for the month recorded since records began.

New vehicle registrations totalled 14,028 for the month.

“During March new vehicle registrations of vehicles were up 1% (159 units) on March 2017, reflecting a stable market,” says David Crawford, Chief Executive Officer of the Motor Industry Association (MIA).

“Year to date the market is up 2% (916 units) compared to the first three months of 2017.”

While registrations of passenger and SUV vehicles were down 2% during March (by 180 units for a total of 9050), the registration of 4,978 commercial vehicles underlined the continued growth in that section of the new vehicle market. Commercial vehicle registrations were up 7% (339 units) on March 2017.

Toyota remains the overall market leader with 17% market share (2,421 units), followed by Ford with

11% (1,551 units) and Mitsubishi with 8% market share (1,104 units).

The good news continued for Toyota during March, with the Toyota Hilux back at the top of the bestselling light commercial vehicle model table, with 915 units registered. It was a narrow margin back to the Hilux’s arch rival, the Ford ranger though; just three utes separating the two in terms of numbers registered. The Holden Colorado took third spot in the light commercial vehicle stakes, with 427 units registered during March.

In the passenger and SUV segments, Toyota was

also the market leader for registrations with 13% market share (1,196 units) followed by Mazda with 9% (858 units) and Mitsubishi with 8% market share (722 units).

The SUV medium segment regained the top segment for the month of March with 18% market share. This was followed by the Pick Up/Chassis Cab 4x4 segment also with 16% of the market, and the SUV compact with 13% market share.

rime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Energy Minister Megan Woods have announced no more offshore oil and gas exploration permits will be issued in New Zealand territorial waters.

The ban comes despite Ardern stating during last year’s election campaign that she would not cancel future permits.

Labour’s deputy leader, Kelvin Davis, commented that the decision to end exploration is “the right thing to do” and “a brave and bold decision”.

While the ban is on any future exploration, existing exploration permits will remain valid. Presently there are 31 active permits for oil and gas, 22 of them offshore. Some active permits last until the 2040s, so it is likely oil and gas will continue to be extracted in many locations for at least the next 20 years.

There are also some small exemptions to the ban, which will see continued oil and gas exploration in onshore parts of Taranaki.

Despite this, the Opposition came out swinging in response to the decision, pointing out that the decision flew in the face of advice from Treasury which warned that such a ban could cost the New

Zealand economy $6.2bn.

National leader Simon Bridges, a former Energy Minister, described Ardern’s decision as “reckless”.

National has promised to reverse the decision immediately should it regain power in 2020, suggesting that thousands of jobs in provincial centres, many of which rely on the oil and gas industry as a primary revenue generator, will be lost.

Davis suggested such claims from the opposition

were “scaremongering” but did admit the Treasury report was reviewed by Labour prior to making the decision. He said the transition would be managed over a 30-year period though, meaning effects on the economy wouldn’t be as detrimental as the report suggested.

Ardern is expected to outline plans for a managed transition towards a carbon-neutral economy by 2050. The Government also has a goal of achieving 100% renewable electricity by 2035.

egistrations of new fully-electric vehicles have more than doubled in the first quarter of 2018, according to Motor Industry Association (MIA) data.

And despite increased competition from mainstream manufacturers such as Volkswagen, Hyundai, BMW and Volvo, Tesla remains the best-selling fullyelectric brand on offer in New Zealand.

The Tesla Model S liftback was New Zealand’s bestselling fully-electric vehicle through the first three months of 2018, with 44 units sold. The American company scored a double win at the top, with the Model X SUV proving the country’s second-biggest

selling EV (with 37 units sold).

Volkswagen’s new e-Golf – the German manufacturer’s first full-electric model to land in New Zealand – has hit the ground running however, with 34 units sold. The electric take on Volkswagen’s ever-popular hatchback has overtaken last year’s best-selling Hyundai Ioniq (27 units) in total registrations and promises to nip at Tesla’s heels as supply increases.

In total, 162 brand new fully-electric cars were registered in New Zealand in Q1, 2018; a 225% increase over the same period last year, says the MIA. Tesla is still the market leader with a 50% share,

followed by Volkswagen (34%) and Hyundai (34%).

Numbers of plug-in petrol-electric hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) were also up for the first quarter of 2018, with the 138 units registered showing a 176% increase year-on-year with 2017’s figures.

The Mitsubishi Outlander (58 units) remains the clear winner in the plug-in hybrid segment, followed by the newly released Kia Niro (19 units) and Mini Countryman (14 units).

There are now more than 7000 fully-electric vehicles registered on New Zealand roads. The Government aims to have 64,000 electric vehicles registered on the road by 2021.

Wheeling and dealing: your wheel sizing guide WHEELS ARE WHEELS ARE WHEELS, RIGHT? WELL, NOT QUITE — WE TAKE A LOOK AT THE SIZING FACTS AND FICTIONS YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW

W

here the styling of your car is concerned, wheel choice is the makeor-break decider. However, it’s not just styling — wheel choice can have a notable effect on ride and handling. But, how hard could it be? Get the diameter and stud pattern right, and you’re all good to bolt those new rims on, right?

Not quite. You see, while those are arguably the two most important factors when it comes to replacing the wheels on your car, they are far from the only ones worth considering, especially when it comes to the ‘offset’ — sometimes referred to as ‘backspace’ — and centre bore size, to ensure a safe fit.

Measurements Width is easy to understand, denoting the breadth of the wheel. However, when it comes to taking measurement, it’s easy to fall into the trap of assuming it’s the width from outer to outer, which is incorrect.

The correct way to measure wheel width is with no tyre mounted, measuring between the beads, which will yield the advertised width of the wheel. Measuring total width between external edges will add up to an extra inch in width, which does need to be factored in when calculating what wheels will fit — however, this is not the measurement to be used when purchasing or specifying a new set of wheels.

Diameter simply measures the diameter of a wheel — the straight-line distance passing through the centre of the circular face of the wheel. However, as simple a concept as that is to understand and measure, a number of factors regarding wheel diameter must be considered. If you have installed larger-than-factory brakes, it is vital to ensure that the chosen wheel will clear them — the factory-style 15-inch steel wheels on your sleeper project will be unlikely to clear your Wilwood six-piston calipers and 13-inch discs.

diameter’ — the total diameter of the wheel and tyre combination. As diameter directly affects the ‘circumference’ of a circle — the distance covered in one rotation — it is easy to unwittingly have an impact on overall gearing, affecting both speedometer accuracy and performance characteristics.

Offset is a measurement of the distance, in millimetres, between the wheel’s hub mounting face and the centre line of the wheel width. A zero-offset wheel has the hub mounting face at the width centre line. Most wheels leave the factory with positive offset — that is, a hub mounting face closer to the outer edge of the wheel than the width centre line.

Backspacing is an alternative measurement of offset, measuring the distance between the hub mounting face relative to the inner edge of the wheel.

Backspace and offset share a positive correlation — that is, a larger backspace inherently implies a higher offset, while a smaller backspace implies a lower offset. In addition to overall width, it is the most important factor to consider for correct wheel fitment.

PCD is the abbreviation of ‘pitch circle diameter’ — essentially, the wheel’s stud pattern. PCD is a key factor in whether a wheel will be able to be mounted to a vehicle’s hub. The first digit always refers to the number of studs — generally four, five, or six. The second number refers to the diameter of the circle in which the studs are arranged. The common Ford

stud pattern of 5x114.3 implies five studs arranged in a circle with a 114.3mm diameter.

Centre bore measures the diameter of the hole in the centre of the wheel. This is an important consideration, because the ‘spigot’ — the lipped protrusion at the centre of a hub or brake drum — is usually what locates the wheel on the hub. It is therefore important that the wheel’s centre bore matches the hub size to ensure correct load bearing.

Wheels with a larger bore size may be located on the hub with hub-centric rings to take up the empty space, while wheels with a centre bore too small may be able to be bored out to fit. However, due to the potential for structural compromise, a wheel-repair specialist should be consulted about this option.

Jaguar E-Pace

Jaguar? Nah, they only build big, long limo-like sedans and sports ca--- oh, hang on What is it?

Everybody’s doing it, so why not us too? Meet Jaguar’s compact crossover SUV. No, none of that sentence was a typo.

What’s interesting about it?

The E-Pace is at once both the strangest addition to the Jaguar model line-up, as well as the most likely to achieve mainstream success. The manufacturer has stated it firmly expects the E-Pace to become its top-selling model, building on the success of the larger F-Pace SUV. That’s because compact SUVs are so hot right now.

Regardless of whether it’s part of the manufacturer’s brand heritage, no carmaker keen to make a buck or two is sitting on the side-lines during the current SUV revolution.

To that end, you kind of get the feeling the E-Pace is a car Jaguar knows it has to make, as opposed to actually wants to.

Is it any good?

It’s no F-Type sports coupe, but then it isn’t designed to be. In saying that though, Jaguar is at pains to underline the link between many of the E-Pace’s design attributes and those of its halo sports cars.

Jaguar isn’t saying the E-Pace boasts sports car-like performance (sprightly 221kW four-pot turbo petrol in the PS300 AWD aside), but rather, the designers

have ensured plenty of performance-style design cues lifted directly from the sports coupe/cabrio offering can be found here.

The most notable of these elements are in the headlights, which feature assemblies that extend into the front guards with ‘J-blade’ daytime running lights, just like they do on the F-Type. Along with similar tail lights and a coupe-like window-line, other strong F-Type elements lie inside the E-Pace’s cabin, where a deeply recessed driving position framed with the same centre stack as found in the F-Type (right down to the grab handle positioned on the front passenger side) reminds of Jaguar’s sports car immediately.

Other than that? Well, it’s a compact SUV from a premium manufacturer. It’s loaded with interesting tech and is certainly a comfy car to drive and even sit in the back seat of. If you’re after a point of difference to similarly-sized fodder from Volkswagen or Mercedes-Benz or fancy a step up from everyday fare like the Mazda CX-5 or Kia Sportage, then an E-Pace will be worth a look.

Between $69,900 and $89,900 depending on which of the six grades you opt for.

SEAT Ateca

It’s a SEAT, from Spain. And no, you’re saying it wrong crossover.

It used to be that Skoda was the cut-price Volkswagen. Now SEAT is kind of like the cut-price Skoda, and proud of it.

Things will also get even more interesting next year when Cupra becomes a stand-alone sports car sub-brand. The current Leon Cupra is a fun steer, but following the division of labour we’re expecting proper hot hatch hardware from Cupra of the firespitting Golf R, Megane RS and AMG A45 variety.

What is it?

This is SEAT’s go at a medium-sized SUV and it’s rather good too.

What’s that? What’s a SEAT? Oh, it’s part of the Volkswagen Group family, although the company (pronounced “Say-at”) has been building cars for decades for the Spanish market. It’s also an acronym, hence the all-caps shouty-ness.

Underneath those exterior panels and inside the cabin you’ll find plenty of bits from the wider Volkswagen Group parts bin, which is no bad thing at all.

What’s interesting about it?

Taken in isolation the Ateca is another medium-sized SUV in a sea of likeminded suburban transport (read this month’s Jaguar E-Pace report for more on that subject).

But the really interesting thing here is that SEAT has just arrived in New Zealand – at time of writing the company literally still has just the one showroom – yet it already has a full line-up of models. In addition to the Ateca you can buy an Ibiza compact hatch, a slightly larger Leon hatch as well as a sporty Leon Cupra version (think Golf GTI) and an Arona

Is it any good?

It’s excellent. And when you factor in the Ateca is – more-or-less – a Volkswagen Tiguan in a different wrapper, the price points will become the headline.

You can choose between two petrols (a 1.3-litre and a 2.0-litre delivering 110kW and 140kW respectively) and a 2.0-litre turbo diesel, which is only available as a 4x4 and is also the priciest version on offer. Stick to the 2.0-litre petrol (SEAT Ateca FR 4Drive) though and you’ll get plenty of kit for the outlay.

Opt for the SEAT Sport Line accessory list and you can even specify blue, orange or red 19” alloy wheels. How to pronounce the name on the boot lid will become the second question everyone asks you.

What’s it going to cost?

You’ll pay between $38,900 and $52,900.

Ford Mustang

Ford’s Pony Car renaissance continues apace with fresh tech and subtle updates to styling

What is it?

The reason why anyone who took the time and trouble to privately import a 10-year old left-hook Ford Mustang a few years ago possibly whimpers involuntarily now.

What’s interesting about it?

It might look like the previous Mustang at a glance, but there’s plenty that’s new about the 2018 update. For a start the paddle-shift auto version now features a 10-speed SelectShift automatic – yes, 10-speed.

Outside, the Mustang features new all-LED headlights and a lower front grille, with newly repositioned bonnet air-intakes. At the back, there’s more LED light tech and, on V8 versions, a quad-exhaust set-up.

New alloy options are available, as well as the chance to ruin yours with excessive stripy stickers if you so wish too. But in short, that svelte legendary silhouette remains as before, which is good news.

Is it any good?

Let’s start with some numbers. In GT form the Mustang’s 5.0-litre Coyote V8 packs more of a punch than ever; peak power of 339kW (450hp) is 33kW higher than in the previous iteration. Similarly, peak torque is now up to 556Nm; a jump of 26Nm. The power gains have been achieved thanks to the first application for Mustang of Ford’s new dual-fuel, high-pressure direct injection and low-pressure port fuel injection on a V8 engine. The boffins in lab coats say this system delivers robust low-end torque, high-rpm power and improved fuel efficiency too…

BMW M5

Want to meet a big sedan that scoffs at the notion no one wants a big sedan anymore?

What is it?

It’s BMW’s Übermensch. Despite everything you might read about manufacturers such as BMW embracing the electrified future and their slavish devotion to hotticket SUVs, sometimes one single model still sums up everything they do.

For BMW, it’s the M5. Now that the M3 is an M4 (and better, yes, but somehow just not the same), the M5 remains the red-blooded through-line. No, no one is buying large sedans anymore. But the lucky few that do buy this particular large sedan will be rewarded every time they hit the starter button.

What’s interesting about it?

Did you know the M5 is now a 4WD? Yep, it has BMW’s new M xDrive selectable all-wheel drive system onboard. Using various modes, you can drive it in 4WD, 4WD Sport or revert back to good old rearwheel drive if you’re on a track, or you just like that kind of thing. How cool is that?

Even with the all-wheel drive system this M5 is lighter than its predecessor thanks mainly to the manufacturer’s extensive use of carbon fibre.

Naturally it’s no stripped-out racer though. The M5 delivers all the techy goodness you’d expect at this price point, regardless of the horsepower under the hood. Extras like M sports seats are a nice touch, as are the seat belts subtly stitched with signature M colours (red, white, blue and… er, another slightly lighter blue).

Is it any good?

Ha! Good one. It’s the new M5; it’s bloody brilliant.

In all-paw mode the M5 steers like a big cat on an antelope; it’s insanely fast to react and feels absolutely glued to the road. Even in the default normal drive mode it feels lightening quick with the sort of agility that leaves you shaking your head in disbelief. Hit one of the pre-programmable red toggles on the steering wheel for Sport and the M5’s entire demeanour changes again.

Sean agreed it was time to move the car on in order to get it finished. The list of outfits to take over was not an extensive one, and Dan Tyler from Rocket Speed Equipment was right at the top.

“We rang Dan and asked if he would come over to look at the car and our concept, listen to our ideas, and hopefully finish the car,” Sean says. “He was very professional, receptive, and straight up.” There was no question that he was their guy.

With the roadster at Rocket, progress picked up in earnest, thanks to the efforts of Dan, Bryce, Josh, and Paul, and it began to look more complete with each trip Sean and Ange made to check it out. However, having a crisp vision of what she expected, Ange had no problem requesting changes to get it perfect.

“Dan, being the person he is, took on board what Ange was saying and went about changing things to the way she wanted them,” Sean explains. “I’m sure he’d tell anyone that Ange knew what she wanted, and the things she changed and picked out were pretty bang on the money, even if they seemed wrong at the time.”

The list of modifications is extreme; it includes every possible aspect of the bodywork (seriously, check out the spec panel!), and spills over to include a custombuilt removable roof and that one-off curved and tinted windscreen — a unique feature that fits the roadster so perfectly that it is apt to go unnoticed if not pointed out.

While Ange was undoubtedly the boss of style, everything mechanical was Sean’s responsibility, and he wasn’t prepared to half-arse it. In stark contrast to the smooth and refined aesthetics, the driveline is raw and mechanical. A GM Performance ZZ427 crate engine was chosen for its pure grunt, and, with help from a 770cfm Holley carb and Flowmaster-muffled exhaust, couples perfectly with the Tremec TKO 600 manual box.

It was a full 13 years after the project started that the car reached a point at which it could be fired up and driven — a very exciting milestone. Mark Stokes, from MS Vehicle Certification, had been kept in the loop since John Reid was piecing the chassis together, and having the roadster at this point meant he could begin the final stages of the LVVTA certification process. Suddenly, the end was in sight.

Convertible concessions

In addition to her spot-on styling, Ange had some weird and wonderful ideas for what she wanted from the car. These included an electric roof, electric windows, electric and heated seats, and all the other mod-cons. Once Dan at Rocket Speed Equipment got involved, many of these were taken off the list — “He did not think we had the budget for it, and he did not like gimmicks on vehicles, as they always inherently cause issues,” Sean recalls.

With the benefit of hindsight, they see that Dan was absolutely correct and their roadster is perfect the way it has turned out.
