OLE JOHAN, Chief Mechanic Mount Shop started with a handful of
engine mounts, some strut mounts and an air intake hose. After listening to customers, it soon became apparent there was an opportunity to specialise in this area of the market. This started the rapid expansion of Mount Shop’s product ranges. A move to the company’s current headquarters soon followed too, allowing for much better management. Starting with engine and strut mounts, suspension bushes soon became the next product line Mount Shop would venture into; a move driven by customer requests. Having a large range of suspension bushes available, the requests for more under-car products started flowing. The move to Mount Shop becoming the ‘Total Under Car Specialist’ it is today had begun.

Bendix provides advice on rear brake pads on vehicles with stability control THE RULE OF THUMB WHEN SERVICING BRAKES AND BRAKE PADS USED TO BE THAT SINCE THE REAR BRAKES DO LESS WORK THAN THE FRONT BRAKES, THE PADS WILL LAST TWICE AS LONG. BENDIX ADVISE, HOWEVER, THAT IN MODERN CARS AND VEHICLES, THIS IS NO LONGER THE CASE
W
ith the advent of traction control, stability programs and electronic brake force distribution systems found in today’s modern cars, the rear brakes are given a work out that is every bit as hard as the fronts, often without drivers realising it. Electronic brake force distribution (EBD) is a system that is now found on most modern cars with high safety ratings. EBD works by varying the brake pressure between front and rear wheels, depending on speed, road conditions and how hard the driver is braking. EBD works alongside standard anti-lock braking systems to provide extra peace of mind. Often EBD uses the rear brakes to stop the car from diving under initial brake application. This prevents excessive weight transfer to the front, allowing for more stable handling and a more comfortable ride for the car’s occupants. In rear wheel drive cars clever traction and stability
programs are used in place of a limited slip differential, by braking the inside or outside rear wheels to improve handling and traction. Stability control programs also brake the inside rear wheels to prevent understeer in emergency situations. Bendix brakes are suited to modern car technology that continually improves to meet ever stricter safety regulations. Combined, these offer exceptional onroad safety. Advice from Bendix is that it is important to make sure that rear brakes, calipers, and rotors are checked at the time a service is undertaken. For more information on Bendix Brake Pads visit bendix.com.au or for your nearest stockist visit bendix.com.au/stockists. You can also follow Bendix on Facebook for the latest updates and news by visiting facebook.com/workshop. Watch the video on Rear Brake Pads at youtube.com/watch?v=qPJTlDaBS6k

Partmaster teams up with Royal Precision Lubricants to get the good oil
A ROYAL PRECISION LUBRICANTS EXPERT IS TRAINING PARTMASTER STAFF AROUND THE COUNTRY IN ORDER TO UPSKILL THE NEW ZEALAND DISTRIBUTOR’S LUBRICATION KNOWLEDGE IN ORDER TO HELP CLIENTS MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICES
R
oyal Precision Lubricants and Partmaster management have joined forces to evaluate and improve the understanding of lubricants. The training – which is being undertaken with Royal Precision Lubricants General Manager, Jason Green (see interview p38) – has been designed to cover the fundamentals of lubrication so all Partmaster staff have a clearer understanding of what makes the Royal brand its own identity in a competitive market. Partmaster says that Royal Precision Lubricants is growing domestically and internationally as a force in lubrication expertise. It is the preferred brand Partmaster chooses to distribute nationally throughout New Zealand. In recent years Partmaster has grown the Royal Precision Lubricants brand to a level where to move forward, additional training and a broader insight into other lubricants markets is required. Jason will be taking Partmaster staff around the country through Fundamentals of Lubrication workshops during a six month stay in New Zealand. The multi-module workshop is designed to give attendees a comprehensive overview of lubricants. Modules have been designed to break down all aspects of how oil works, from its basic lubrication function, to an overview of the five base oils available, to the differences between full- and semisynthetic motor oil.
8
Auto Channel Issue #6 September 2018
The advantages of synthetics are discussed indepth. Attendees will be learning about the primary performance advantage of synthetic base oils and their ability to cope with an extended range of temperatures; exhibiting outstanding flow characteristics at extremely low temperatures and stability at extremely high temperatures. Other modules are designed to give attendees practical information on oil viscosity and the SAE classification system; the differences between winter viscosity and summer viscosity monograde products, as well as the advent of multigrade oils which are able to meet the limits of winter and summer viscosity grades at the same time. Drilling deeper, the Royal Precision Lubricants training modules will also be schooling Partmaster staff on how Viscosity Index Improvers – long chain polymers which expand as oil temperature rises, causing the oil to thicken and resist flow – work to help oil maintain its viscosity better than the same grade oil without Viscosity Index Improvers. Another key part of the training programme will give attendees a better understanding of complex and varied lubrication performance specifications, as stipulated by the American Petroleum Institute (API), European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) and the Japanese Automotive Standards Organization (JASO). Each global governing body sets standards and oil performance criteria to comply with emissions and environmental
standards particular to each region. This means the variety of classification for service petrol engines (SN, SM, SL, SJ), API diesel specifications such as FA-4, CK-4 and CH-4, and the wide range of ACEA specifications (A3/B3, A3/ B4, A5/B5 and catalyst-compatible lubricants) are all covered. Similarly, manufacturer-specific products are also discussed, such as Volkswagen’s lubricant family and Ford’s WSS specification range. An Australian owned and operated company, Royal Precision Lubricants has been manufacturing and marketing lubricants for nearly two decades. During that time, Jason estimates the manufacturer has blended in excess of 160 million litres of finished lubricants and speciality products. Manufacturing from two different blending locations in Queensland and Victoria, Royal Precision Lubricants exports products to New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore, Fiji, Russia and Dubai. Royal Precision Lubricants comply with ISO 90012016 and Sci-Qual International quality control processes, and the company holds OEM approvals and blend all products in strict compliance with all governing bodies, including SAE, API, ACEA and JASO. Royal Precision Lubricants are available exclusively through Partmaster outlets nationwide. Visit partmaster.kiwi or phone 0800 727 862 for more information.

Govt. compulsory Takata airbag recall reaches halfway point LATEST FIGURES REVEAL THAT 38,238 TAKATA ALPHA-TYPE AIRBAGS HAVE BEEN REPLACED, REPRESENTING ABOUT 45% OF AFFECTED VEHICLES project principals to date. “Distributors have worked tirelessly to identify the number of vehicles fitted with the more at risk Takata alpha-type airbag, subject to a mandatory recall [and] with the other types of Takata airbag,” he said. “Industry continues to allocate significant resources to achieve a coordinated and timely response to the recall.” Crawford said that the VIA has also been extremely proactive in working to ensure used imported vehicles subject to recall are being identified; a process he calls a “significant logistical exercise”. “For used imported vehicles, before a replacement part can be ordered, a distributor needs to know if the vehicle is in New Zealand and then verify the status of

Ceramic glow plugs offer no compromise on performance GLOW PLUGS ARE DESIGNED TO PERFORM UNDER EXTREME PRESSURE. BUT WHEN IT COMES TIME TO REPLACE THEM, IT’S IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER METAL AND CERAMIC GLOW PLUGS ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE
I
f you thought all glow plugs were the same; think again. On closer inspection, you'll see that glow plugs come in a variety of shapes and differ in terms of properties and materials. Ceramic glow plugs are engineered to perform under the most extreme conditions. Compared to a metal glow plug they have a more robust heating element, made from ceramic (Silicon Nitride) which has extremely good thermal conductivity properties and can withstand very rapid heating times over extended service periods. The ceramic heating tip allows ceramic glow plugs to reach higher temperatures than metal type glow plugs can, enabling the engine to reach operating temperature particularly quickly. Due to the robust nature of the ceramic heating tip, post-glow times of up to ten minutes can be employed. But also, because of the extreme operating conditions that ceramic glow plugs are subjected to, metal and ceramic glow plugs aren’t interchangeable. Many automotive manufacturers are specifying
10
Auto Channel Issue #6 September 2018
ceramic plugs as OE fitment. In these cases, a service repairer replacing old ceramic glow plugs with metal plugs could cause a reduction in performance and in extreme cases, permanent engine damage. NGK is the world’s largest OEM and OES supplier of spark plugs, glow plugs, and oxygen sensors. Manufactured using state of the art techniques, NGK glow plugs are OE equivalent. NGK glow plugs also enable safe start-up from low ambient temperatures, low emissions during the vehicle’s warm-up phase and stable idling before the engine reaches operating temperature. A highquality coating on the metal shell provides highresistance to corrosion and as a result boast a longer service life. All NGK’s ‘vehicle specific, no compromise’ glow plugs are designed to suit the specific requirements of individual makes and models of vehicle to ensure that customers’ engines perform at their optimum. NGK glow plugs and other components are available at all Repco stores. Visit repco.co.nz for more information or to find your local branch.

Ultrasonic cleaning provides for pristine parts every time TECHSPAN AND ELMA ULTRASONICS HAVE THE RIGHT CLEANING METHOD FOR THOSE ESPECIALLY ‘DIFFICULT’ CLEANING APPLICATIONS
I
n the automotive sector there are a wide range of applications where Ultrasonic Cleaning can be employed, saving workshops labour costs and providing a far better cleaning job. A huge variety of components and parts can be cleaned using this method, including bearings, racks, mounts, pistons, engine parts, motorcycle and car carburettors, just to name a small sample. So, what exactly is ultrasonic cleaning and how does it actually work? Using ultrasound (high-frequency sound waves, usually from 25-200kHz) and an appropriate cleaning fluid, ultrasonic cleaning ensures
fine, intensive cleaning of an array of products can be achieved quickly. The ultrasonic cleaner can be used with ordinary tap water. Although it is also recommended that an appropriate ultrasonic cleaning agent be used in order to aid in softening the specific soil, which will greatly improve the ultrasonic cleaning effect. Ultrasonic Cleaning was first used in industrial cleaning applications in the 1950s and it has proven a trusted method for ridding all manner of item of hard-to-shift contaminants. Cleaning cycle times are normally between five and 10 minutes, but can sometimes exceed 20 minutes, depending on the object being cleaned and the extent of the soil contamination. Beyond the automotive industry, ultrasonic cleaners are used to clean a very wide variety of products, such as jewellery, watches, dental and surgical instruments, military equipment, tools, coins, industrial parts, lenses and electronic components. Elma Ultrasonic Cleaners – distributed in New Zealand by Techspan – are especially effective when it comes to cleaning
carburettors. Depending on the size of the parts to be cleaned, the repairer can select an appropriatelydimensioned cleaning bath to suit the part sizing. With the combined use of an Elma Ultrasonic cleaner and some Tec Clean A4 or A5 ultrasonic cleaning chemical, fast and effective cleaning of carburettors is no longer a frustrating and lengthy task. Combining quality and technology in one convenient package, the Elma ultrasonic cleaning product range is probably the largest in the world. It includes an array of serial units and speciallydesigned cleaning installations. From the smallest table-top unit for the cleaning of glasses, up to a 20-stage special installation unit for the fine cleaning of computer chips in the manufacturing process, Elma has become the right choice for solutions to cleaning problems in many business sectors. Elma Ultrasonics makes numerous cleaning baths to suit different applications. Through Techspan, a variety of attachments and cleaning agent options are also available. Techspan has a specific website dedicated to the Elma Ultrasonic cleaner range. Browse available models and purchase directly online at elmaultrasonic.co.nz. New vehicle registration figures hold firm in July THE MOTOR INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION SAYS THE MARKET TOOK A ‘STEADY AS SHE GOES’ APPROACH DURING JULY, WITH A SIX PERCENT INCREASE ON JULY 2017
W
hile new vehicle registrations of 12,324 recorded during July made it the second-strongest July on record, David Crawford, Chief Executive Officer of the Motor Industry Association, says that new vehicle sales are holding steady, rather than surging ahead as they were this time last year. July 2018 vehicles were up 6% (693 units) on July 2017. Year to date, the market is up by 1.8% (1,621 units) compared to the first seven months of 2017. “Despite there being several worrying signs that the New Zealand economy is not as strong as it has been, combined with a significant drop in overall business confidence, new vehicle sales have for the time being held steady” said Crawford. The strongest July on record dates back to 1984, when 13,983 new vehicles were registered. Registrations of 8,041 passenger and SUV vehicles for July 2018 show the market to be up 436 units on July 2017; an increase of 5.7%. he 2YS-hosted training sessions will be run across weekday evenings and will take between one and two hours. The sessions will begin mid-September at the company’s New Lynn premises. “Today, most vehicles come standard with remote keys,” says Marc Yin from 2YS Trading. “However, there may come a time when the remote key must be reprogrammed, or a newly purchased car remote key will need to be programmed in order to sync with the vehicle’s door locks properly. “Remote keys work by communicating with the locks in the specific car by using unique radio signals. In order to communicate with these locks, the remote key must be programmed and synced with the locks in the car.” Marc says that because the key fobs themselves have memory chips built into them that allow the key to work, specialised programming needs to be undertaken so that the locking mechanism recognizes the code being sent to it by the remote key. Whether repairing or reprogramming, the task needs to be completed properly to ensure the system works. Marc says the 2YS Trading workshops, which will cost $149 per person, are designed to decipher the process for trade professionals, offering them another attribute to the services they’re able to offer customers. To enquire about or enrol in the remote key repair and reprogramming training workshop, contact Marc at 2YS Trading, ph 021 998 488 or 09 218 9613.
FAG SmartSET wheel bearing kits reduce running costs and arrive ready to roll PRE-LUBRICATED, PRE-ASSEMBLED, AND PRE-POSITIONED, SCHAEFFLER’S FAG SMARTSET WHEEL BEARING SETS FOR COMMERCIAL TRUCKS, TRAILERS AND BUSES OFFER A COMPLETE SOLUTION TO EASY INSTALLATION, LONGER SERVICE LIFE, AND OPERATING COST REDUCTION
S
pecially developed for the independent aftermarket, the FAG SmartSET from Schaeffler is suited to all types of truck, trailer and bus axle applications using standard tapered roller bearings. The core elements of the advanced new repair solution consist of two pre-assembled wheel bearing units, each consisting of tapered roller bearings in an innovative cage design with retaining elements and specially coated inner and outer rings. This special coating significantly protects the bearing from corrosion, slip wear and crack formation. A support sleeve pre-positions the tapered roller
bearings so that rotating the wheel to adjust the bearings is no longer necessary. The FAG SmartSET is pre-lubricated, which ensures that garage professionals always have the right amount and correctly specified-type of grease. In addition to all this, a permanent dust cover prevents dirt ingress from contaminating the grease. As a complete set that includes a pressing tool, this new solution means a fast, clean, and efficient repair process that minimizes the sources for mistakes and creates cost benefits in fitting time and longer life. Different versions of the FAG SmartSET are available covering numerous models of major truck, trailer, bus and axle manufacturers.
More info can be obtained at the garage portal REPXPERT (repxpert.com.au) or via your local Schaeffler FAG distributor.

onroe’s warranty extension makes it the only ride performance product manufacturer to offer a five-year warranty in Australia and New Zealand, providing two additional years compared to any other shock absorber brand available in each country’s automotive aftermarket. According to Monroe Marketing Manager, Brydon Tweddell, durability, range, superior ride and handling are at the top of the list when repairers and suspension specialists select Monroe ride performance products. “We have always stood firmly behind the total durability of our aftermarket ride performance products and this has been a major factor in Monroe’s long-term market-leading status,” he said. “In wanting to further emphasise the quality that comes with our range, we are proud to be the first to offer a five-year warranty on our Monroe OE Spectrum product range, to offer even greater incentives for the trade along with total peace of mind and the best value for money for their

This ensures that their customers, the motorists of Australia and New Zealand, are driving cars that stop, turn, grip and ride exactly as they should.” Monroe says that with the new five-year warranty across the Monroe OE Spectrum range of replacement shock absorbers and struts, trade customers gain the peace of mind of knowing the products they’re recommending and fitting to customer vehicles are backed up by the

Utilizing BMW Genuine Parts keeps the icons alive WITH A WIDE RANGE OF GENUINE BMW PARTS AVAILABLE IN NEW ZEALAND THAT COVER BOTH OLD AND NEW MODELS, THE AUTOMOTIVE TRADE HAS THE ABILITY TO OFFER CUSTOMERS STRAIGHT-FROM-THE-SOURCE SOLUTIONS TO KEEP THEIR CHERISHED BMW IN TOP CONDITION
W
hen it comes to keeping BMWs on the road, a lot of factors come into play — in particular, keeping the scheduled maintenance up to date, as well as using BMW Genuine Parts. With increased technology in BMW engines over time, coupled with longer, condition-based servicing intervals, not only is it important to maintain BMWs with genuine factory parts, but also using the correct oil grade/type should be factored in as well. Quality, efficiency, and innovation are the three cornerstones of the expertise delivered by the authorized BMW Dealer Network throughout New Zealand, where a wide range of Genuine BMW Parts are available, making it much easier to keep the BMWs on New Zealand roads exactly that – genuine. BMWs provide top performance day after day, and it is the interaction of the parts that is so important for full functionality in ‘daily driving’ scenarios. Perfect performance is only achieved by precisely matching approved BMW parts to the requirements of each individual BMW model. All BMW Genuine Parts come with a two-year factory-

backed warranty, and this warranty includes the replacement of any defective/faulty parts at any BMW dealership nationwide. BMW New Zealand also offers competitive pricing to the trade on all types of parts through its dealer network; from oil filters to full body panels. This competitive pricing also extends to BMW’s starrated tyres (and run-flat tyres), which are similarly available to the trade through the marque’s dealer network. With BMW’s performance-focused M subbrand being an immensely popular part of the manufacturer’s output in this country, it’s reassuring to know that many M-parts can be used across all models. BMW stresses that genuine BMW M cars should always use genuine BMW M parts and accessories though, as these components are precisely engineered to achieve the highest performance and reliability due to the sportier nature of BMW M cars.
It isn’t just the more recent models that are wellcatered to with BMW Genuine Parts either. BMW AG in Germany still produces OEM original parts for most classic BMWs. In Europe, BMW Group has an entire department dedicated to maintaining older models — BMW Group Classic. This means BMW New Zealand and its dealer network can source parts for most BMWs – irrespective of age – which helps keep BMW’s heritage alive. BMW is a company steeped in history, and even the latest models still incorporate aspects of previous generations, especially in design, such as the famous kidney grille at the front of every model. BMW New Zealand says it actively supports the BMW Car Club of New Zealand, with its club members consisting of BMW enthusiasts ranging from rare classics to new and improved models. It’s reassuring for club members – as well as drivers using their BMW every day as a commuter tool – that BMW Genuine Parts are so readily available.

Volvo to stop manufacturing diesel models from 2019 THE MOVE TO DROP DIESEL ENGINES FROM VOLVO’S MODEL RANGE COMES AS THE CARMAKER DOUBLES DOWN ON PETROL HYBRID AND ELECTRIC TECH
T
he forthcoming Volvo S60 sedan, due next year, will be the first Volvo to be produced without a diesel engine. Volvo is to stop offering diesel versions on all new models launched from 2019. Instead, the Swedish manufacturer will be offering customers of its new cars either mild petrol hybrid, plug-in petrol hybrid or battery electric vehicle options. Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive of Volvo Cars told automotive media at the S60’s advanced preview, “Our future is electric, and we
will no longer develop a new generation of diesel engines. “We will phase out cars with only an internal combustion engine, with petrol hybrid versions as a transitional option as we move towards full electrification.” Samuelsson said lower fuel consumption was the “only advantage of diesel,” but that “you can get that back with a mild-hybrid engine”. Volvo Cars has previously stated that it is aiming for fully electric cars to make up 50% of its global sales by 2025. Under the stewardship of its parent
company, Geely, Volvo has also announced its onetime performance sub-brand, Polestar, will split from Volvo completely and refocus as a maker of electric-only sports cars in the coming years. The move by Volvo comes as more manufacturers push diesel models aside in favour of either fullelectric or petrol-electric powertrains. In Europe, many cities have also put extra pressure on carmakers by banning diesel vehicles of certain ages from entering into central urban areas, in a bid to improve air quality.

Haval H9
Chinese manufacturer Haval’s SUV-only range extends by one, with the introduction of its biggest model yet, the H9 What is it? Haval? While not yet a household name, Haval launched into the New Zealand market around a year ago with the H2 crossover and the H6 mid-sized SUV. The H9 is their biggest yet; a five- or seven-seater playing in the same space as the Toyota Highlander, Hyundai Santa Fe, et al. What’s interesting about it? Haval is owned by Great Wall Motors which, it’s fair to say, has spent time in the news in recent years for all the wrong reasons. After a solid start at the beginning of the decade with cheap utes being sold by the dozen, concerns around reliability and a rather damning twostar safety rating issued for the updated Great Wall Steed by the ANCAP testing boffins, has eroded sales of the utes. Haval is a stand-alone brand though so, er… don’t let all that cloud your judgement. They have a five-star ANCAP safety rating too. Oh, the other interesting thing is that, in China, Great Wall has another, separate higher-end SUV brand called WEY. Go and Google some of the WEY models available, especially the VV5 and VV6. We can’t help but wonder whether Jaguar’s patent lawyer’s have been summoned yet … Is it any good? It’s good at pretty much everything to do with going across gravel and dirt and up steep slopes. The 4x4 system is actually very impressive and it features good approach and departure angles and a 700mm wading depth. There’s a 180kW/350Nm four-cylinder turbo
petrol under the hood, which is grunty enough, although we’d take the official 10.9L/100km combined fuel economy figure with a pinch of salt. On the comfort and convenience side of the ledger, the H9 has pretty much everything you need – it all just needs a little finessing. There are massaging seats, a tri-zone climate air system to ensure those in the third row are heated or cooled sufficiently, a big sunroof and all the Bluetooth connectivity you could wish for. Some things don’t measure up, however. The car announces some sort of safety message in a robotized voice whenever you select ‘reverse’ through the eight-speed auto. There are safety goodies such as automatically-adaptive headlights and Rear Cross Traffic Alert sensors, but the way they engage
is a bit hit-and-miss. The leather seats are a bit too shiny. It also feels big and lurchy on winding roads. It’s the kind of vehicle where you think, the next generation will be spot on. For now, it’s close, but no proverbial. Which is a bit of a shame, because the smaller H6 gets everything right straight out of the gate. What’s it going to cost? There are two grades of Haval H9 available; the Lux costs $43,990, while the Ultra (which adds the panoramic sunroof, massaging seats, 10-speaker sound system and third row of chairs) is $47,990. Good value for money when weighed up against the competition, but there’s a compromise to be made on quality in some areas.
Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S 4matic+ coupe
A quick SUV-type machine that’ll get to 100km/h faster than the time it takes to say its full name particular compact crossover SUV will do the 0-100km/ h sprint in a rather impressive 3.8 seconds. Peak power of 375kW and a whopping 700Nm – from a petrol engine – are other numbers to consider. This is a brutally fast machine. But it will also transport five in comfort and serenity if needed. Those traveling up front will enjoy AMG Performance sports seats, stainless steel sports pedals and other go-faster detailing. There’s a phenomenally good 13-speaker Burmester surround sound stereo system as standard too. When the stereo isn’t at full blast, the AMG GLC 63 S has a sports exhaust button if you really want to annoy your neighbours when setting off on that early morning run into the city. Subaru Forester
Fans of Subaru’s Forester SUV have been hanging out for an updated model — it’s finally here
What is it? The previous Subaru Forester had a long shelf life. Subaru New Zealand reckons there is a decidedly Forester-focused section of its audience, so those buyer’s will be placated now that the next-gen SUV has arrived. On closer inspection, they should be rather pleased with the specification and pricing too.
to see building supplies or muddy dogs in the back of a Forester, whereas the Outback has become appropriate transport for that set of antique drawers. So yes, two different models… despite both being, ahem, SUVs. And all that aside, we’re not going to beat about the bush; the Forester is spot-on in terms of equipment, ability and price.
What’s interesting about it? Subaru will tell you the Forester is their second SUV, because they claim the Outback is also an SUV. Sigh. Look guys, it’s a station wagon, okay? But anyway, semantics aside, these two models do have very different audiences. The Outback has become a very aspirational model over time; as likely to be at the top of a user-chooser fleet customer’s wish-list as ideal transport for all manner of outdoorsy types, from photographers to extreme sportspeople. As a result, the Forester has kind of become the workhorse of the Subaru line-up; a blue-collar option over the increasingly ritzy Outback. You’re more likely
Is it any good? The Forester has gone all premium – and not just in the top-shelf model. All three grades available feel like a big step up. Underpinning the new Forester is Subaru’s excellent Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system, coupled with the usual Boxer engine tech up-front (a 2.5-litre petrol four in all three Forester grades, pushing out 136kW/239Nm). In addition to features such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring technology, keyless entry and start, seven airbags and reverse automatic rear braking (to avoid crunching into that low wall you might not have noticed in
the reversing camera), Subaru’s EyeSight crash avoidance system is standard across the range too. This system collects together pre-collision braking and throttle management technology, adaptive cruise control and Lane Keep Assist tech to help the car stay in the centre of the lane. Added to this for the 2018 Forester is Subaru’s new facial recognition software (Driver Monitoring System), which uses a camera to monitor the face of the driver for signs of fatigue behind the wheel. What’s it going to cost? The 2.5 Sport costs $39,990, the 2.5 Sport Plus costs $44,990 and the top-trim 2.5 Premium costs $47,490. They’re all very well-specified; so much so that the entry-level 2.5 Sport would probably be our pick. It’s still packed with electro-wizardry, doesn’t skimp on the safety stuff, and is the baseline blueprint for the Forester’s cargo-carrying capabilities. Yet that sub-$40k price tag is pretty compelling.

Lexus RX350 L
Lexus gives its audience a seven-seater without the ‘speak nicely to bank manager’ price tag associated with its other seven-seater What is it? You’ll have to give it a second-glance, but it’s the stretched version of Lexus’ perennial mid-size RX SUV. Stretched, because it features a third row of seats. What’s interesting about it? Up until now, if you wanted a seven-seater Lexus, your only option was swallowing hard and signing off on the big $179,900 LX570. So, you really, really would have had to want seven seats. Or eight, as the LX features a full three posies in its third row. Now though, there’s another option. Yes, it’s still a six-figure option, but packaging-wise the RX350L gives you everything the LX570 does, in a more svelte, less-boxy bodyshell. Naturally, it’s smaller than the LX but still feels roomy. We’ve also always found the RX interesting in that – for whatever reason – it seems to be the zenith of Lexus’ angular, origami-influenced design language. While other models like the IS and GS sedans have spent some time in staid, could-be-from-anymanufacturer form, the RX has always been set apart. The latest one is the best yet, with all sorts of cuts and creases going on that really set it apart. If you like that sort of thing. Is it any good? The newest Lexus seven-seater still offers plenty of space, being 210mm longer than the conventional five-seat RX mid-sizer (and hey; it’s only 80mm shorter than that $179,900 LX). Aside from those extra chairs, though, there isn’t much different here from the five-seat RX. Lexus put

together excellent interiors that really cocoon the driver, but still offer plenty of space for all onboard. Despite being a large-ish SUV, you feel like you’re sitting in it, rather than on top of it, and there is plenty of adjustment available from both the multifunction steering wheel and the comfy front seats. Flip the sixth and seventh seats down electronically and there remains the sort of boot dimensions you’d hope for from an SUV of these proportions. We’re
also pleased to report Lexus’ Remote Touch interface system (the tracer pad thingy where you control the infotainment system from), seems much-improved and more accurate. What’s it going to cost? $108,400. The RX350L comes in top-shelf Limited specification only, which gives you all the bells and whistles you’d expect.

Royal Precision Lubricants NEXGEN 5W-30 Royal Precision Lubricants NEXGEN 5W-30 is full synthetic motor oil exceeding GM Dexos 1 Gen 2 and is formulated to provide protection from Low Speed Pre-Ignition (LSPI) combustion events in accordance with the latest General Motors requirements. As can occur in high-output, turbo-charged, direct injection petrol engines, LSPI is an abnormal combustion event in which the fuel-air mixture ignites before intended, causing excessive pressures inside the engine’s cylinders, leading to engine damage. There are several factors that contribute to LSPI, of which lubricating oil has been observed to be one. Testing has demonstrated lubricant composition can impact LSPI. With Royal Precision Lubricants NEXGEN 5W-30, mitigating preignition has been achieved by altering the composition of the lubricant’s additives to help avoid this issue. Available from Partmaster. Gates Drive Belts & Drive Belt Tensioners There are risks when you only replace one part of the drive system rather than the belt and components. A common misnomer is thinking the drive belt is the cause of belt noise, when in fact it’s usually caused by an external source. Be sure to use a Gates Drive Belt and Tensioner when it’s time for replacement. The Gates brand of serpentine Drive Belts and Tensioners are trusted by vehicle manufacturers, recommended by quality mechanics and relied on by motorists. System failures can lead to expensive engine repairs. The best way to prevent this is to remember to start inspecting the serpentine systems at 100,000km and replace worn components by 150,000km or as advised by the manufacturer. Gates Drive Belt Tensioners and Gates Drive Belts can be purchased from Repco and Appco separately or as a kit. FIFTY YEARS OF ESCORT WE LOOK BACK ON HALF A DECADE OF FORD ESCORTS
I
f there’s one nameplate that seems to have burnt itself into the nation’s memory, it’s the Ford Escort. Whether it’s for being the indestructible rear-wheel-drive rally weapon that smashed the gas through forest stages like it was nothing; the cheap and cheerful thrasher
that your dad bought you on the first day you had your licence; or the rusted out, struggling-to-idle supermarket trolley of your elderly neighbour that has no business being on the road. Whatever you remember it for, Kiwis have a long-running love affair with the pesky Esky, having been assembled
en masse locally and pedalled in damn near every motor sport run here. It’s been 50 years since Ford debuted the Mark I at the Brussels Motor Show (1968), and we thought, what better excuse to take a look back at the model’s history and some of the best examples in existence.
FORD ESCORT MARK I (1967–1975)
While we all accept it as the original Escort, the Mark I is not technically the first to wear the nameplate. Nope, Ford had used that one some 12 years earlier on a reduced-spec version of the Ford Squire — a ’50s estate car (wagon) version of the Anglia 100E — perhaps with no intentions of it ever being anything more. The Escort 100E — it wasn’t what we would call pretty, and unsurprisingly, it wasn’t very popular with the cashed-up public. Ford put the nameplate on the backburner until its designers started drawing up plans for a driver-orientated car that could lug around the whole family and the dog. Loosely based on the popular Anglia, the Mark I ditched the reverse rake rear window, hooded headlights, and finned rear quarter wings for a more conservative, now classic, coke-bottle
32
Auto Channel Issue #6 September 2018
type design. Ford promoted it heavily as ‘the small car that isn’t’, cramming an obscene amount of cabin space and features into what is overall a tiny-framed body. The price tag was an easy pill to swallow for most too, starting out at £940 ($30,000NZD by today’s inflation) with MacPherson strut suspension and rackand-pinion steering, it was miles ahead of what was on the market at the time. The Mark I was launched as a two-door saloon that would evolve into four-door options, with the same in an estate form. The most common of which were the De Luxe and Super models; the former making use of circular front headlights, whereas the latter had the familiar rectangular headlights and included a water temp gauge. The estate featured the same heart as
the saloons — 957cc and a high-compression 1117cc, variations of the Kent Crossflow platform — but made use of a larger clutch, stiffer rear springs, and in most configurations, larger drums or discs. A beefed-up option, dubbed the 1300GT, was crammed with a tuned 1.3-litre Crossflow (OHV) that featured a Weber sidedraught and uprated suspension. Inside the cabin, the 1300GT gained a tacho, battery charge indicator, and an oil pressure gauge — full performance option, right? That same tuned screamer made its way into the Escort Sport which was the same spec as the 1300GT with additional flared front guards. It didn’t take long before this new kid on the block started rattling the cages of motor sport series worldwide and proved its performance credentials.
Ford began developing a comp spec version from the get go, with prototypes sent to rural England for rough road testing. The Escort Twin Cam made its competitive debut at Croft Circuit in 1968, a heavily strengthened shell fitted with the infamous Lotus-Ford Twin Cam 1.6-litre heart, which was pedalled to victory at the Circuit of Ireland Rally. It then proceeded to win pretty much every other rally that was worth its weight in gold. Come 1970, and the Escort had notched up the British, German, Belgian, and South African saloon car championships on its belt, along with winning the European Rally Manufacturers’ championship backto-back. This success was only furthered thanks to the Cosworth BDA 16-valve with the Escort RS1600, replacing the Twin Cam. The racing version was so popular that Ford set up a network of Rallye Sport dealers with two in-house mechanics trained to service, tune, and repair the road-going versions. But arguably the most memorable victory for the model was the London–Mexico World Cup Rally of 1970.
Hannu Mikkola pedalled his Escort to the top spot after covering 25,700km, with other Escort entrants claiming third, fifth, sixth, and eighth. Ford was so proud of their car’s success that they birthed a new road-going version: the Escort Mexico. Nearing the end of the Mark I’s production run, Ford wanted to produce a farewell performance model, which came in the form of the now sought-after RS200. This new bad boy was powered by a two-litre overhead-cam Pinto motor that could accelerate the little weapon to 100kph in just nine seconds. Initially built at the Halewood plant in England during the closing months of 1967, the Escort would go on to be built and assembled all over the world, including Germany, Belgium, Ireland, Israel, Taiwan, Australia, and New Zealand. Six years into the car’s UK introduction, Ford announced the completion of the two-millionth Escort. Locally, 1.1-litre and 1.3-litre Escorts were assembled at the Seaview plant in Lower Hutt, with some Mexicos imported during the temporary import licensing ease up by the Government in 1973–74.
per cylinder, and a meaty Weber carb, this fire-breather pumped out 86kW and 171Nm of raw gravel destroying mayhem. All of the road-going examples were slathered in white paint work, bar a couple of press and show cars. With the RS1800’s rally victories racking up quick — claiming a total of 20 in WRC alone — interest in performance models was raging and Ford released two more RS models to the lineup to appease the gofast hungry public. This included a reinvented Mexico, built in Germany with a 1.6-litre Pinto heart and stiffer suspension, it was joined by the RS2000. Perhaps the most iconic of all the Mark IIs, the RS2000 featured a unique polyurethane nose, but it was much more than just a fancy facelift. It packed a two-litre Pinto screamer that helped the car boast a 173kph top speed and could crack 100kph in just 8.5 seconds. Notable of the works versions was the development of
a silicone-fluid coupled central differential. Designed by Tim Howard of Ford Dagenham, this created an auto-torque vectoring all-wheel drive system that was superior to the traditional fixed four-wheel drive equivalent. This basic concept is still in use in most allwheel drive cars today. The works cars replaced the Cosworth BDE with a BDG example to give a reported 186kW. Backed by a fivespeed straight-cut ZF box, the rear suspension was fivelinked and the chassis heavily strengthened. The car’s success, winning the RAC Rally every year from 1975 to 1979, earned Björn Waldegård the drivers’ title in 1979, along with Hannu Mikkola in runner up, and Ari Vatanen in fifth, and would earn Ford its first manufacturers’ title — one that it wouldn’t claim again until 2006. And all these victories came despite the arrival on the WRC scene of the venerable four-wheel drive Audi Quattro.
FORD ESCORT MARK II (1974–1981)
With the on-road and motor-sport successes of the Mark I, Ford was always going to have a hard act to follow up. However, they must have got something right as the successor, the Mark II, is not only the bestselling example in the nameplate’s lineage; it’s also the winningest rally car of all time. Much of the original formula that made the Mark I so popular was carried over, only this time it was a jointly developed venture with Ford of Germany. This new semi-British Escort offered everything from the basespec 1.1-litre Crossflow right up to the fire-snorting RS200 road goer — which appeared in the cult classic film, Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels. The secondgen Escort did away with the coke bottle styling, with a squarer, more refined aesthetic, despite measuring in at the same size and weight as the predecessor. Much like the first, the Mark II was produced around the world and locally in New Zealand, with an assembly plant in Wiri, South Auckland, although adapting the instrumentation to metric readings. It was basically the old car’s bones with a new body slapped on top and, knowing this, Ford didn’t mess about in producing a new performance model. The RS1800 was built with racing at its heart. A shortlived homologation special, it was produced in small numbers, repurposing Sport and Mexico shells that were motivated with an all-new rally special Cosworth 1833cc BDE. HIGHLY MODIFIED EVO WHILE THE EXTERIOR OF THIS EVO III DOESN’T GIVE MUCH AWAY, A PEEK AT THE ENGINE BAY WILL YOU SHOW YOU WHERE PRIORITIES LIE The unmistakable chatter of the twin-plate clutch, the stunted yet aggressive idle of the 280/288-degree cams, and the clunk from the dog box as first gear is engaged. These are the tell-tale signs of something far more serious than what you’re surveying when you first lay eyes on Tommie Morris’ understated Evo III. You’d be forgiven for thinking it’s a mildly modified survivor car that made it out of the early 2000s with all its panels intact and no screw holes left gaping where neons once lit up the tarmac. Maybe owned by a guy in his mid 40s who dreamt of Saturday mornings carving backroads, and Sunday arvos cleaning every millimetre with a toothbrush. But in reality, while it might have been a stock survivor when Tommie found it, those sounds are from the 42psi

dyno-destroying 4G63 that makes this genuine Evo III perhaps the most brutal street-going example you’re ever likely to find. Judging by its looks, advertising this fact is not something Tommie likes to do, he’d prefer to let its on-track actions do all the talking, where the only view most opponents are likely to see is the factory Evo III wing as it gets smaller and smaller, edging further and further into the distance. Or perhaps the exterior is actually a view towards what the project was initially intended to be: a subtly modified superclean Evo III. It may have stayed on that trajectory had it not been for a generous friend, as Tommie explains: “We started planning some basic mods and I was given a couple bits and pieces on the proviso that if
I used them I could have them, so that’s where it all unfolded. The motor had to come apart.” That first build was not slapped together, either — it, too, had all the fruit you’d expect to find in a built 4G63, and was carefully pieced together by a race car mechanic friend of Tommie’s. “The build really started once I enlisted the knowledge and expertise from Brendon at BNR Engineering. We nutted out a solid plan of the look and style I was after, and also an end goal of ensuring the build was clean, easily serviceable, and of course a head-turner when the bonnet was opened,” Tommie explains. It was, by all accounts, a tough little two-litre with many of the external bolt-ons you see here today, including the Hypertune coldside and Sinco / Garrett GTX hotside.
It made good power too, some 448kW at all fours, which by most people’s standards is impressive for a four-cylinder to be punching out. Running such a combo clearly whet Tommie’s appetite for what a big power Evo could deliver on the street, and if it wasn’t for a mishap with someone playing in the ECU, it would probably still be in service today. That mishap saw one of the bores heavily scarred and would go undiagnosed for a year, slightly down on compression / power, unbeknownst to Tommie. But this could be why he went searching for more power by bolting on a new ported head, which revealed the internal issue: “That’s where this bad boy engine came from. I thought while it was out it may as well get built properly.” The block was entrusted to Taylor Automotive who stuffed it with the best gear you can get before having to go custom. But first the damaged bore was taken care of with a set of Darton Sleeves. The rotating assembly reads like a who’s who of dream team engine hardware — an Eagle crank, Carrillo Pro-H Rods, CP pistons, Carr rod bolts, and the usual
hardware. Interestingly, Tommie elected to forgo stroking, keeping it factory displacement: “People don’t believe it’s still two-litre, but it is. I like to rev it, so we kept the capacity small.” While the bottom end was all about maximum strength, the real power-making magic for this engine lies in the head and its ability to flow some serious numbers. The call was made to Christchurch-based Horsepower Heads for a CNC port job to suit the big boy Kelford TX280R cams, which head honcho, Kevin Ban, had seen good results from in the past. The rest of the valve train is pretty much an all-Kelford affair,
with their beehive springs and cam gears, alongside Ferrea Comp Plus valves, and titanium retainers. While we don’t have the exact flow numbers, Tommie puts it this way: “The head was flowing so much that we couldn’t get it to run on the 448kW tune, it was compressor surging and all sorts.” And this, with the same Garrett GTX35824R, Sinco manifold, and Hypertune inlet from the old motor. But the real proof would come when strapped onto the dyno for the first time, extracting 545kW without breaking a sweat — although it was getting a little messy higher in the RPM range. Ross from Top Tune
making the call that switching to CDI ignition and a crank trigger would be the safe option. In went the M&W Pro CDI, on the same tune, with the same boost, and with eight degrees less timing, it unlocked another 60kW. Tommie had never really set out with power goals in mind, but when numbers north of 500kW began flashing up on the screen at Top Tune, and with Ross assuring him he wasn’t even leaning on it yet, they decided another trip to the dyno could see the two-litre jumping into the 600kW zone. Clearly, Ross is a man that backs himself, as sure enough, with E85 in the tank and 42psi of boost, the two-litre gave the dyno a real working over, producing 628kW at all fours, and that’s without using the dry shot nitrous. Exactly how much it makes when the nitrous bottle is armed remains unclear as it was shutting down the borrowed dyno. What we do know is that it brings on the party some 2000rpm earlier — as if it wasn’t already wild enough. So what’s it like to pedal 600kW on the street? “The power comes on at 3500rpm and ramps up, so it doesn’t just hit you, it’s got a real nice curve.

We’ve got it on semis and it surprises me how much grip it actually has. Yeah, if the tyres are cold it has issues, but once it has some heat in them, the grip is there. It gets a little floaty in the front when it’s squatting, but you just deal with it.” But it’s much, much more than simply a brutal engine in a clean shell, and to only talk about it would be an injustice for this true streeter — one that Tommie uses regularly, including on long trips during summer. The full interior remains, albeit completely retrimmed in black suede with diamond stitching — nothing over the top, just a nice functional interior complete with a back seat and even a stereo, although this had to be upgraded after the PPG gearset was installed and the whine drowned everything else out. Unlike many that end down this route of mega power, you won’t find a cage going in there anytime soon — it will remain a streeter — as

Tommie intends to continue enjoying the flexibility that only comes in street trim: “We can wake up on a Sunday and take it for a drive, you can go cruising, you can beat on it, and you can drive it home, you’re not stuck to trailering it everywhere.” It’s also why so much time has been spent on the tuning to ensure it drives perfectly. Tommie is quick to point out that it’s much more than just a big number. Ross even spent a week ‘treating it as his own’ to ensure all the little bugs were well sorted. It’s also set up for flex fuel, but in the meantime it will be staying on that E85 diet. There is one piece of serious business to take care of, one that Tommie was somewhat cagey about (excuse the pun). “We are going to take it to the drags, we have a time in mind, but being uncaged it’s going to be a lot of practice and then a single hit. So we will be doing a lot of launches and 60-foots etc., to make sure we’re happy it’ll run the numbers. I don’t want it to be a
10-second car, put it that way.” But before this there is a set of custom axles on the list to buy along with billet transfer case upgrades, and carbon driveshaft to complete the driveline, but surprisingly the factory axles are holding up thus far, with only one casualty. It’s these last few pieces that will complete the seven-year build for Tommie, well until he bores of the power — we’re just kidding, no one will ever bore of a 628kW street car. Well if you do, you probably need your head read. With Chrome Expression Session coming up next month, it will give Tommie his first chance to truly unleash the beast, and we’re sure he’ll embarrass more than his fair share of opponents in the Roll Racing. So be warned if you’re thinking of lining up against this unsuspecting Evo III, you better be winding up that boost as it’s unlikely to end any way but with Tommie’s tail lights disappearing off into the distance ahead.

Interview: Jason Green from Royal Precision Lubricants ROYAL PRECISION LUBRICANTS GENERAL MANAGER, JASON GREEN, HAS COMMITTED TO SIX MONTHS’ WORK IN NEW ZEALAND UPSKILLING THEIR NATIONAL DISTRIBUTOR, PARTMASTER; TRAINING ALL STAFF AND THE DISTRIBUTOR’S CLIENTS ALIKE ON HOW TO ENSURE EVERY WORKSHOP HAS THE RIGHT LUBRICANTS AVAILABLE FOR THE RIGHT JOB
J
ason Green, General Manager for Royal Precision Lubricants, says he has seen during his time in New Zealand so far, that a number of workshops are still requiring assistance on understanding advances in the lubrication industry around oil specifications and applications in correct lubricants placement, and why so many different lubricants are now required. “On the whole I think general knowledge about lubricants is definitely improving. But we still see a lot of people in the trade who might have one or two lubricants in their workshop that they use for a whole raft of scenarios which fall outside of the products abilities to correctly protect,” he says. “Part of what we’re doing with Partmaster is to ensure their customers have a broader understanding of why certain lubricants are used for certain applications. At the end of the day, if you’re sticking the wrong liquid in the wrong hole, then you’re risking your reputation with your customers and solely holding the bag for any service related issues. “I doubt any oil company in the world will back a mechanic who puts the wrong oil into service. Their implied oil warranties would not back this kind of error and rest liability solely on the mechanic. The stakes are high with typical replacement or repair cost increasing ten-fold in newer modern vehicles.” Jason says that, unlike many other products that parts suppliers carry, there are many more variances with lubricants, meaning the need for a deeper understanding of what’s on the shelf is that much greater. Royal Precision Lubricants and Partmaster are committed to broader industry training to ensure everyone who uses the Royal brand gets it right. “The range of products a company like Royal Precision Lubricants has on offer is quite complex and very diverse. It’s not like many of the other items a parts supplier might sell, where you have a single part number to match up and your client is on their way again with the right component. “There is a lot of technology and science behind producing quality lubricants. My approach is to go right back to the basics, so that the Partmaster team can help educate all manner of trade customer, regardless of their experience.” Jason’s training modules have been designed to break down all aspects of how a lubricant works, from its basic lubrication function, to an overview of the base oils available, to the differences between mineral, full and semi-synthetic motor oil, as well as practical information on oil viscosity. Demystifying the SAE classification system and complex lubrication performance specifications, as stipulated by global governing bodies which set various performance standards, are also covered. Jason’s schedule will see him travel to each

Partmaster branch throughout the country over the course of the next six months. From there he will take Partmaster’s sales teams through the modules, before heading out to see Partmaster customers and other workshops who may be interested in better support and service-based packages. During September, Jason will be visiting customers from Partmaster’s Penrose, Tamaki, Tauranga and Hamilton branches. “We’ve put a lot of investment into educating our client base,” he continues. “To that end we now have what we consider one of the most comprehensive electronic lube guides available. We have fully dedicated lube guides for each region, with Australia- and New Zealandspecific guides on our website that we’re continually fine-tuning. We’ve also recently added a motorbike lube guide to support our recently released Nexus Premium Motorcycle oils. “Combine that resource – which is available to absolutely everyone – with the road show I’m currently undertaking in conjunction with Partmaster, and our passion for people to get their product choices right is pretty obvious. “No other oil company is doing this sort of thing in New Zealand right now,” Jason concludes. “It’s important that we do it though, because we have some highly technical products available, and we really want the trade to be using them to the best of their abilities. If they trust our products, then both them and their customers will get the full benefit of our Precision Lubricants.” Royal Precision Lubricants are available through Partmaster outlets nationwide. Visit partmaster. kiwi or phone 0800 727 862 for more information. Check out the New Zealand-specific Royal Precision Lubricants’ electronic lube guide at royallubricants.com.au.
