POOR QUALITY HOISTS AND LACK OF REGULATION CAUSES CONCERN A LACK OF SPECIFIC REGULATIONS AROUND THE INSTALLATION OF HOISTS IN NEW ZEALAND WORKSHOPS WILL EVENTUALLY LEAD TO SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH, CAUTION SEVERAL DISTRIBUTORS.

istributors of quality hoist equipment into the New Zealand market believe more policing is needed around the certification of equipment installers, along with basic fit-for-purpose measurements and safety certifications for the lifting equipment itself. The issue is two-fold, say distributors, as established installers are undercut in the market by operators with little experience or interest in ensuring a safe install. A recent increase in the amount of lower-quality hoist equipment – usually sold through online auction sites – entering the New Zealand market has exacerbated the situation. “I’m genuinely stunned no one has already been injured or worse,” says Gary Cotterell of Automaster Equipment, which distributes a number of international hoist brands, including Corghi, Powerrex and Peak. “There seems to be nothing to stop anyone jumping on the internet and importing the lowest cost lifts they can find and supplying them to the market without doing any research or safety checks. It also seems anyone can buy a van and hit the road as an install and maintenance engineer. CONTINUED ON PAGE 4

I can’t say for sure, but I’m guessing some whiz-bang potato peeler with German-made high-carbon steel blades and a ruggedized thumb grip is probably going to be better than the flouro-coloured three-pack I bought for $8 at the supermarket the other evening.

It’s something a pro chef would understand anyway. And so it goes with the gear used in our neck of the woods. There’s a reason certain brands stick out as being top-shelf items in their respective fields. The high-quality materials are there, the R&D has been done, the proven longevity is respected by the trade. Of course, the temptation to go with a quick (and cheap) fix is always there too. on gear sometimes might seem like a good move, especially when the correspondence you opened immediately before that online auction page you’ve had your eye on was from the IRD. Or the council. It’s amazing the corners that are being cut on equipment which is not only central to most established workshops but represents potentially one of the biggest everyday dangers to life and limb. I’m

thinking specifically of the vehicle hoist. The hoist is a crucial bit of kit, but as covered on the front page this month, several well-known Kiwi distributors have raised concerns at the amount of cheap, potentially sub-par equipment coming into the country in ever-greater numbers. Not only that, but without any central governmentpoliced regulations around lift safety and certification, who installs lifting equipment, how its installed, or even what basic on-going safety checks need to be done, the risk of major equipment failure and, perhaps more pertinently, severe injury is a very real one. Have a read and let us know your thoughts on the matter. Or if there’s some other potential health and safety nightmare waiting in the wings for the industry that you reckon needs more coverage, email me at editor@autochannel.co.nz. I hope you enjoy this month’s read.

“While many of the install companies have a very good in-house training regime, there are no checks or qualifications required, and nothing which suggests installers of hoist equipment need to meet any approved criteria,” he says. Currently the local market vaguely follows compliance rules as used in Australia. But without any central Government-policed regulations around lift safety and certification, who installs lifting equipment, how it is installed, or even what basic on-going safety checks need to be done, the local market is only as good as the individuals involved. Cotterell says that while the main local equipment suppliers make sure the equipment they sell is safetycertified and normally use more reputable installation companies (who in turn recommend regular safety servicing and inspections), there is a growing number of suppliers & purchasers who do not. “I have spoken with trusted installers that we work with who have turned up to jobs and point-blank refused to do the install, because the environment doesn’t suit the hoist the person wants to put in. The problem though is that, as soon as that first installer has refused, the person wanting the work done can simply get on the phone to the next guy and try again. “Eventually someone will do it. Top-quality lifts should be imbedded in concrete as specified in the manufacturer’s install manual, normally between 100-250mm thick, but I have heard of some installers fitting lifts on concrete much less than this. I know of one instance where the hoist toppled over the very first time it was used.” Todd Ashley from Century Distributors, which represents Heshbon in New Zealand, agrees, saying that while hoists will have factory recommended installation depths, ongoing warrant of fitness certification for the hoist itself isn’t concerned with the groundwork underneath the unit. “Once that hoist is in, there isn’t any way of knowing exactly to what depth its base support was drilled down to. The WOF cert only focuses on the hoist, not on the prep work done at the time of installation. “Also, the installer will normally place a sticker on the machine requiring it to be inspected at either a six- or 12-month interval. But again: there are no real guidelines on who does the inspecting. It’s one of those ‘Who inspects the inspectors?’ scenarios. “There are some really sharp guys out there

4

Auto Channel Issue #7 October 2018

providing an excellent and safe service to the trade and we enjoy working with those guys. But I do think a better level of policing is required across the industry,” he says. William Singleton, General Manager of Stocks Equipment, which represents brands such as Rotary and AutopStenhoj in the local market, says that opting for cheap lifting equipment might represent a short-term gain for workshops. But the ramifications could be much wider in the event of an accident. “The ability to be able to buy anything online and save money is a big temptation, however not all hoists are built to the same high-performance standards,” he says. “Recent health and safety legislation puts more onus on those who own or are in charge of the workshop to take all practical steps to ensure that all hoists are in a safe condition. The cost of making a wrong decision could be much greater than before.” Singleton says that the manufacturers he deals with have proven test regimes for their products, demonstrating to distributors and end-users the robust capabilities of the equipment. Hoist load testing will generally involve multiple lift cycles – 20,000 in one cited instance – with a 50% overload above the rated capacity, in order to ensure a guaranteed level of durability. With cheaper products, consumers cannot always be certain such stringent test regimes are carried out, however. “There is the old saying that ‘you get what you pay for’. I think this particularly true of hoist equipment,” says Singleton. Gary Cotterell says there isn’t an easy fix to the current situation but does believe that specific Worksafe rules around hoist safety certification and installation should be implemented; standard measures which would improve peace-of-mind for distributors and workshop owners investing in quality gear alike. “A workshop hoist is a big investment for the average establishment, and it’s such a pivotal part of many operations, so it pays to research what’s out there. It’s in constant use and is a focal point of the workshop after all. “At the end of the day though, investing in the right equipment, installed by a trusted third-party provider, isn’t just vital for the continued workflow through the premises; it’s vital for the health and wellbeing of staff and customers alike.”

Parts Connection kicks off the Ultimate $10K Tool Grab with Sulco STARTING THIS MONTH, PARTS CONNECTION IS GIVING CUSTOMERS ALL OVER THE COUNTRY THE CHANCE TO WIN $10,000 WORTH OF SULCO TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT.

P

arts Connection’s Ultimate $10K Tool Grab promotion is on now. When a trade customer purchases parts from any of the Parts Connection member companies during the month of October they’ll be able to go online to partsconnection.co.nz and enter their invoice details. Once the customer has spent $1000 with Parts

Connection they’ll automatically get an entry in the draw for the $10,000 tool and workshop equipment prize. If the customer spends another $500 they will receive an additional entry into the draw and so on. Also, the prize is customizable depending on what the lucky winner wants; whether it’s a new hoist for the workshop, or a big box of indispensable Sulco tools, that’s completely up to them.

To make it easy for customers, Parts Connection says they don’t need to add up invoice amounts. Instead, by entering details online as they purchase, the Parts Connection system will keep track of how much they have spent and let them know how much they have to go before being eligible for the big prize. Once the trade customer has reached that $1000 threshold, Parts Connection will let them know how many entries they have in the draw. Parts Connection also says it chose to approach Sulco to partner with for the Ultimate $10k Tool Grab promotion as the company is a leading tool and equipment supplier in New Zealand and, like Parts Connection, is a Capricorn Coop preferred supplier. Parts Connection is a group of 15 automotive dismantlers each specializing in their own make of vehicle. Parts Connection has been in business for over 25 years and is one of New Zealand’s leading automotive parts suppliers. The Ultimate $10K Tool Grab runs through October until November 2nd, with the lucky winner’s details to be drawn on November 5th. To find out more and get your entries in now, head to partsconnection.co.nz

Top Hino technician shines in Trans-Tasman Challenge NEW ZEALAND’S TOP HINO TECHNICIAN HEIDI INKSTER TRAVELLED TO AUSTRALIA RECENTLY FOR A HEAD-TO-HEAD TECHNICAL CHALLENGE WITH HINO AUSTRALIA’S 2016 CHAMPION, ASA PEARSON.

R

epresenting Truckstops, Wellington, Heidi Inkster recently travelled to Sydney for the ‘Trans-Tasman’ challenge, held in August at Hino Australia’s Training Centre; part of Hino Australia’s 2018 Hino National Skills Contest programme. The head-to-head competition was the first of its kind and the two competitors were so evenly matched, the competition ended in a draw. “I thought it was a joke when they announced the draw” said Inkster, who felt she was “up against it” given the size of the competition in Australia. “I really noticed a step up in pressure but made sure I took care of the basics and built from there,” she said. The challenge saw Inkster and Pearson compete against each other simultaneously, and against the clock, with an allocation of 30 minutes to find four faults on a new GH1A wide-cab Hino. Each fault had a time limit, which once lapsed, was closed forcing the competitors to move to the next fault. “Normally you have time to think about a job, but it was really interesting to see how you go under real

6

Auto Channel Issue #7 October 2018

time pressure,” said Inkster. Adding to the pressure, each competitor had a GoPro strapped to their head to capture all the action up-close in real time. There was also a 160-strong crowd watching the event, which heightened the nerves of both competitors. “This is the first time a New Zealand Hino technician has competed against an Australia technician,” said Simon Wilson, Hino New Zealand’s Technical Support Manager, who travelled with Heidi to Sydney. “We couldn’t be prouder of Heidi, both in terms of her skills during the competition and how she has represented Hino New Zealand and our after-sales partner Truckstops.” When asked what advice Heidi would offer other Truckstops technicians looking to enter New Zealand’s competition next year, Heidi said simply giving the competition a go and giving it heaps are the main things. “I actually learnt tons from the online component leading up to the final, so even if you don’t make it through you will still benefit from the experience,” she said.

Heidi will now have the opportunity to relax while attending the Gold Coast 600 during October, before heading to Hino Japan to attend an awards ceremony next year.

JOHNATHON MADDREN, EXECUTIVE GENERAL MANAGER REPCO NEW ZEALAND WITH FABIAN COULTHARD AND SCOTT MCLAUGHLIN

Repco joins forces with Shell V-Power Racing Team TWO ICONS OF THE AUSTRALIAN AND NEW ZEALAND MOTORSPORT AND AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRIES HAVE ANNOUNCED THEY WILL JOIN FORCES IN THE VIRGIN AUSTRALIA SUPERCARS CHAMPIONSHIP.

R

epco and DJR Team Penske have agreed

on a multi-year sponsorship agreement that sees Repco become a partner of the Shell V-Power Racing Team. Repco was founded in Melbourne in 1922 as a ‘Replacement Parts Company’. Nearly a century later, Repco has evolved into one of the most recognised and trusted names in the Australasian automotive aftermarket. Repco’s motorsport involvement goes back a long way too; back to 1947. But it is perhaps most famous for its involvement with racing icon Jack Brabham; a partnership that culminated in the 1966 Formula 1 World Championship win in Jack’s very own Repco V8-powered Brabham BT19. Brabham remains the only driver to claim the Formula 1 World Championship in his own car. Brabham’s teammate, Denny Hulme, won the team a second World Championship in 1967, again driving a Repco-Brabham race car. Jonathon Maddren, Executive General Manager of Repco New Zealand, said that the company was making a long overdue return to Supercars racing. “We are incredibly proud of Repco’s impressive history in motorsport across Australasia and

the world, so returning to Supercars feels like a homecoming,” said Maddren. “This decision was not just about sticking a logo on a car. Repco are looking to create a much deeper engagement with motoring enthusiasts across New Zealand and Australia. Backing one of the top racing teams in the championship, coupled with two great young Kiwi drivers in motorsport, is an added benefit for Kiwi motoring fans”. Maddren also said that the formation of the relationship with DJR Team Penske and the Shell V-Power Racing Team brings two iconic organisations together as one formidable motorsport partnership. DJR Team Penske Managing Director, Ryan Story, said that having Repco join the team was an important moment in Australian motorsport. “This is no small thing to bring Repco back into Australian motorsport. To be the team they’ve chosen to partner with is a source of immense pride for all of us at Shell V-Power Racing Team,” he said. The Shell V-Power Racing Team will take to the track across November 2nd-4th at the ITM Auckland SuperSprint, held at Pukekohe Park Raceway.

Blackfern Cooperative backs quality lubricant supplier Q8Oils

Morey’s continues to be the ‘go to’ for the good oil

KIWI COOPERATIVE BLACKFERN COOPERATIVE MIGHT SPECIALISE IN LOOKING AFTER ITS KIWI CLIENT-BASE. BUT OFTEN THOSE CLIENTS HAVE A TRULY GLOBAL FOCUS. ONE SUCH COMPANY IS Q8OILS.

HEADQUARTERED IN AUCKLAND AND WITH AUSTRALIAN REPRESENTATION IN BRISBANE, AUSTRALIA, MOREY OIL SOUTH PACIFIC LTD IS A PRIVATELYOWNED FAMILY COMPANY, ESTABLISHED IN 1982.

M

any in New Zealand haven’t heard of Q8Oils, but this revered brand enjoys strong supply relationships with top international producers, blenders and researchers. How does this top-quality product find its way to the Kiwi trade? It’s all thanks to Q8Oils’ New Zealand distributor, Bluepak Lubricants. Bluepak Lubricants is a family-owned business based in Plimmerton, north of Wellington. “We are big enough to matter in the market, but small enough to personally cater to individual business needs,” says area manager Jason Diamond. “Technically, our national sales team are all motor engineers by trade; you just can’t beat the skill set. We’re proud to represent Q8Oils here. The brand offers a premium product without the premium pricing. We believe many trade customers would be pleasantly surprised when comparing Q8Oils with what they might currently be using.” Blackfern Cooperative is a fast-growing account for Bluepak Lubricants, where Blackfern members enjoy the buying power of a cooperative. The group’s size can often offset the effects of market fluctuations. Q8Oils is part of the Kuwait Petroleum Corporation, which is one of the largest oil processing companies in the world.

Based upon extensive R&D activities in European laboratories, Q8Oils manufactures a comprehensive range of oils in their own blending plants. Maintaining the globally-focus, the Q8Oils blending plant in Antwerp, Belgium operates from a site with a long and rich history of production dating back to 1891. Over the last few years the blending plant has undergone a US$100 million renovation, transforming it into one of the largest, most technically-advanced lubricant production facilities in Europe. Having future-proofed the Antwerp plant, further additional expansions are now planned. Remote key repair and reprogramming workshops off to a flying start 2YS TRADING’S SERIES OF EVENING TRAINING WORKSHOPS FOR THE TRADE HAVE BEEN WELL RECEIVED SINCE THEIR LAUNCH IN SEPTEMBER.

2

YS Trading’s training lecturer has over 20 years’ experience reprogramming remote keys for cars. “We’ve found that in New Zealand there are many tools and scanners that do not suit the cars on New Zealand roads. Our training sessions are designed to make sure service providers have the right tools and knowledge for the job,” says Marc Yin from 2YS. Whether repairing or reprogramming, the task needs to be completed properly to ensure the system works. Marc says that because the key fobs themselves

have memory chips built into them that allow the key to work, specialised programming needs to be undertaken so that the locking mechanism recognizes the code being sent to it by the remote key. 2YS established evening workshops for the trade last month. Held across weekday evenings at the company’s New Lynn premises, the sessions take between one and two hours. The workshops cost $149 per person and are designed to decipher the process of remote key repair and reprogramming for trade professionals, potentially providing technicians with another

attribute to the services they’re able to offer customers. “The first workshops have been really well received. We look forward to seeing more mechanics attending future workshops during October,” says Marc. T

he only point of contact between your customer’s BMW and the road beneath it is their tyres. Choosing to supply BMW approved tyres is the logical choice for the perfect fit and the best possible safety outcome. BMW New Zealand’s dealer network holds the largest range of BMW approved tyres in the country. Sourced from leading tyre manufacturing partners, BMW approved tyres are easily identifiable thanks to the German brand’s star marking system. All BMW tyres not only undergo an intensive selection and testing process, they are also matched to the overall concept of the relevant BMW model down to the last detail.

14

Auto Channel Issue #7 October 2018

When purchasing tyres, be sure to look out for the star symbol on the side of the tyre. Only if a tyre provides characteristic BMW handling and meets the demanding BMW criteria 100% on all tests, it is awarded the BMW star marking. BMW dealers also stock run-flat tyres to protect your car should a puncture happen. With reinforced sidewalls and additional lateral strengthening, BMW run-flat tyres add another layer of safety. These tyres work as their own spare, allowing the car to stay on the road for up to 80km, travelling at a maximum of 80km/h, in the event of complete pressure loss. Visit the accessories section of bmw.co.nz for further information on BMW Genuine Accessories.

The United States was good for his race career too, being recognised as #1 in the jet ski racing scene while living and competing there as a part of the Riva Racing jet ski race team. In the early 2000s, with a U.S partner and no less than 12 jet skis in tow, Kane decided to come home “for a couple of years, just to spend some time with the family.” That was over a decade ago. Inevitably, helping out his father occasionally on the office management side of the ledger led to more and more involvement at the workshop. With his father’s workshop manager deciding to move to Australia, before Kane knew it he found himself with a business to run full-time. “I was really green when I first set foot in there. I hadn’t done anything like that before; never aspired to be a panelbeater or anything like that, so I was really in at the deep end. But funnily enough, when I look back now I realise that was a big positive for me,” he says. “I didn’t come into the industry carrying any baggage. The industry as it is now, is all I know. Penrite launches a pair of handy oil apps for workshop and retail NO ONE WANTS AN INCORRECT OIL RECOMMENDATION ON THEIR HANDS. WITH THE PENRITE PRO AND PENRITE PRODUCT SELECTOR MOBILE APPS, ALL THE CORRECT INFORMATION IS RIGHT THERE, ANY TIME IT’S NEEDED.

T

here seems to be a mobile application (or ‘app’ to you and me) for everything these days. But just how helpful are they? Well, if you’re a mechanic or find yourself recommending oils to consumers in the retail environment, there are a couple of app options available that their creators reckon will make you wonder how you ever lived without them. Penrite Oil has developed not one, but two mobile apps to ensure anyone in the trade has the correct product recommendation in the palm of their hand, 24/7.

With the complexity of the car parc constantly increasing, it’s difficult to keep up with all the right recommendations. And an incorrect recommendation can sometimes prove disastrous both to your customer’s vehicle and your business’s word-of-mouth reputation. In order to help mitigate this issue, the Penrite Pro app has been designed specifically for the workshop, while the Penrite Product Selector app is perfect for the end consumer or those working within the retail environment. The Penrite Pro app hosts recommendations for cars and commercial vehicles, including light and medium utes, vans and 4WDs, while the Penrite Product Selector app includes motorcycle, marine, industrial, horticultural, agricultural and earthmoving categories. Once in each of the apps – which are available across

both Apple and Android platforms – finding the right product is simple using the logically-ordered drop-

down lists. First the user selects a vehicle or machine category, then a manufacturer (‘Toyota’, for example), followed by a specific model, such as ‘Hilux GUN136R Series, 1GD – FTV Turbo Diesel (2015-2017)’. Next, the user is directed to select what’s known as a compartment – the part of the mechanical system the desired product is required for. Choices include Engine, Manual Transmission, Automatic Transmission, Differential, Power Steering, Brake or Radiator. From here the correct Penrite product and service refill capacity will be listed, making the correct information just a short series of screen taps away. A detailed description of the product provides the user with all the information needed, plus special notations are given to maximise the service experience. Penrite has made sure the app design is responsive, decreasing lag or delay, and is supported across various screen sizes. Regular updates also ensure trade professionals can rely on finding the most accurate recommendations for the right lubricant selection. Handily, the Penrite Product Selector app also provides the location of your nearest stockist, ensuring anyone can find the right oil for the right application quickly and easily. Visit the iTunes Store or Google Play and search “Penrite” to download.

New Cars

Toyota Corolla

The most-popular car of all time just got a lot better. Yes, we’ve heard that one before. But this time Toyota is definitely on to something. What is it? It’s the all-new Toyota Corolla hatchback. One in five Toyotas sold globally is a Corolla and about 44 million have been sold since the model debuted in 1966. I’m not being a smart-arse when I say this is an incredibly important car for the Japanese auto giant. What’s interesting about it? Stop sniggering at the back there please. There’s actually a lot that is new – and interesting – about this 12th generation Corolla. It has been built using new architecture (called the TNGA – or Toyota New Global Architecture – platform). It’s longer, lower and wider than its predecessor and a heap of development work has been done on how it handles. Remember Toyota is being run by – wait for it – actual motor head car fans these days. There’s a reason the 86 exists and the long-awaited return of the Supra nameplate is imminent; it bugs Toyota collectively that they’re thought of as the maker of boring car-shaped appliances. So it follows that even in their most omnipresent model, they want to push the dynamic envelope a bit. That means, especially in the range-topping ZR model, you’ll find sports seats and a standard roof spoiler and nice instrumentation. Torsional rigidity that has improved by 60% and the Corolla boasts a lower centre of gravity too. Even the 2.0-litre petrol motor is known as a ‘Dynamic Force’ engine. Grrrr.

Is it any good? Overall yes. It still features a CVT trannie, which will drive many people nuts. But there is a decent increase in power (up from 103kW to 125kW) which makes it feel far more usable and not so elastic-y. The GX and SX grades, riding on 16” alloys, are compliant and comfortable across serrated back roads, although the ZR with its 18”alloys and grade-specific body enhancements looks the best. The proportions are right, the driving position is excellent… just don’t hop in the back if you’re tall, as Toyota admits rear leg room has actually shrunk slightly. This might be important if Nana is thinking of one of

these for her ‘see me out’ car and is required to transport mute teenagers on occasion. The other big plus for those of an eco-conscious bent is that the new Corolla is available as a hybrid. We finally catch up with the rest of the world; Prius no longer being the only ToyMoCo option here in the electro-petrol stakes. What’s it going to cost? $29,990 for the Avis-spec GX petrol, $32,490 for midgrade SX and $37,490 for the sporty ZR. If you want a petrol-hybrid, you can either go for an entry-level (read: fleet-tastic) $32,990 GX Hybrid, or a $38,490 ZR Hybrid.

Mazda CX-8

Another seven-seater from the company with one of the best seven-seaters money can buy anyway.

What is it? It’s a seven-seater SUV. But not as big as the CX-9, Mazda’s current range-topper. So, think of it more as a supersized Mazda6 wagon. What’s interesting about it? It’s like a CX-9 but lower-slung and slipperier. I guess you could call this a crossover… if Mazda didn’t already have one of those in the form of the diminutive CX-3 (a Mazda3 in high-top sneakers). The CX-8’s biggest point-of-difference might not actually be what it looks like, but rather what’s under the bonnet.

22

Auto Channel Issue #7 October 2018

The model features Mazda’s new compression-ignition technology as part of a revised 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine. The manufacturer says its compression-ignition tech (in conjunction with rapid multi-stage combustion and a redesigned turbocharger) allows the diesel engine to run more efficiently, reducing fuel consumption and emissions. So don’t be thinking of this is a big, bad diesel, Mazda implores. Is it any good? Absolutely it is. It’s thoroughly well-specified, drives nicely, has a heap of room and – assuming you and diesel haven’t fallen out of love with each other – it sips

fuel modestly (combined fuel economy for the baselevel GSX FWD is pegged at 5.5-litres/100km). But. If you want a wagon, go for the Mazda6. It’s a sensational thing. It looks good, comes in a variety of trim levels and has plenty of cargo space in the back. There’s a reason sales reps have abandoned their Mondeos in droves in recent years for these things. But in the right state-of-dress a Mazda6 wagon is an aspirational-looking piece of kit too. If you want seven seats? Get a CX-9. It’s the proper one, with more of everything and a truly solid build quality. It looks big and square like a large SUV should. Yes, it’s more expensive, but only just; incredibly only around $4000 separates the 8 from the 9 in like-for-like Limited AWD spec. The CX-8? It feels like a half-way point between those two existing, proven Mazda models. It’s good, but it still can’t top it siblings. The CX-9 remains not just the benchmark Mazda SUV, but a benchmark many of the manufacturer’s rivals are probably secretly rather jealous of too. What’s it going to cost? There are three to choose from; the front-wheel drive diesel GSX costs $53,495, the same vehicle but with drive going to all four wheels will cost you $55,995, while the top-of-the-line Limited (also a diesel, also an all-wheel drive) costs $62,495.

Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Not content with a hi-po Colorado in the form of the SportsCat, HSV has an even bigger, badder truck on its hands in the form of the mighty Chevrolet Silverado.

What is it? An enormo-truck with a pedigree all its own, available through HSV in right-hand drive format direct from GM in the States. Yeehaw!

cousins. They even remember to put a foot rest on the right-hand side of the transmission tunnel. Praise the Lord. Is it any good?

What’s interesting about it? A full re-engineering to OEM standards is completed in Aussie before our Silverados arrive here to ensure they meet ANCAP safety rules as newly-born righthand drive trucks. There are 500 new parts in each one and, rather than a straight steering wheel-swap you’re probably expecting, the entire interior is pulled out and refettled to HSV’s liking. The trucks get speedos in kilometres-per-hour before they even leave North America, although HSV utilises the skills and supply chains of a host of local Australian component suppliers to ensure the Silverados look and feel exactly like their ‘Murican

Does it really matter what we say? If you want one, you want one. Right? It’s a lot of fun driving a big ol’ American rig like this. The cabin space is huge, there is a heap of room in the tray (it probably doesn’t need to be underlined, but this thing is a good nose longer than the Colorado and that’s mainly down to extended tray space) and while some of the controls don’t exactly feel refined, they do what’s expected of them and you’re not lacking for anything either. Well, until it comes time to find a decent parking spot anywhere outside of the workshop yard, that is. You’ll struggle. Again, the Silverado’s Achilles Heel is its length, rather than its width, which isn’t that much

more than the aforementioned Holden ute. That big squared-off bonnet does give it the demeanor of a building on wheels though. Trucks coming to New Zealand are powered by GM’s 6.6-litre Duramax turbo-diesel V8, which offers up an impressive 332kW peak power and a massive 1,234Nm of torque, ensuring the Silverado is fit for a multitude of towing and load-hauling duties. An Allison 1000 six-speed heavy-duty automatic transmission is standard, as are four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes and a heavy-duty locking rear differential. What’s it going to cost? The WT (Work Truck) costs $134,990 and will only be available as a dealer-order vehicle. The LTZ, meanwhile, costs $154,990. Both the Midnight Edition and Custom Sport trucks are essentially a black and white version respectively of the same thing, and both cost $163,990.

Mercedes-Benz X-Class

They’ve been building vans for decades. Now Mercedes-Benz Commercial want to play in the same sandpit that Volkswagen has been reveling in for the last few years. What is it? Mercedes-Benz’s first go at a double cab ute. Well, that is: Mercedes-Benz’s first go at putting a Mercedes-Benz body on an existing ute chassis. The four-cylinder ones are Nissan Navaras underneath, you see. What’s interesting about it? It’s an interesting move the way Mercedes-Benz has gone about launching itself into the heady world of double-cab utes. With so much strength in the commercial sector already thanks to its Sprinter van range, the decision to partner with Renault-Nissan to such a degree caught a lot of people by surprise. But yes, the X-Class utes on Kiwi roads right now are, essentially, Navaras with Mercedes-Benz bodies. This will change when the six-cylinder models arrive before the end of the year, as those at least will feature full Mercedes-Benz powertrains. Is it any good? It does everything a light commercial ute should. There are three grades to choose from: Pure, which is the workhorse-y one with unpainted bumper sections and the option of a cab-chassis load bed; Progressive, which gives you mid-range upgrades; or Power, which features extras like sports bars and satellite navigation. A bit like its passenger car range, Mercedes-Benz offers a huge amount of optional extras too. Engines available at present include two turbocharged 2.3-litre four-cylinder units with two

24

Auto Channel Issue #7 October 2018

power output options. In the X 220 d with single turbocharger it generates 120kW and in the biturbo X 250 d, 140kW. The X 220 d is available with purely rear wheel drive or with engageable all-wheel drive. The X 250 d is all-wheel drive only. If you like a good old manual transmission, you’re in luck here: as standard the X 220 d and X 250 d come with a six-speed manual transmission. A seven-speed automatic is optionally available for the X 250 d only.

What’s it going to cost? There are an impressive 13 different X-Class utes available right from launch. All four-cylinderpowered, there will be six-cylinder X-Classes arriving soon too, adding even more choice. To go through the options in detail is to enter the world of Excel spreadsheets, but suffice to say you can pay as little as $53,300, or as much as $69,000 depending on which of the three specs you opt for.

Steel art: what 2500 hours of custom work looks like

W

hen Kelvin Taylor first set foot in the Matamata Panelworks workshop, this was not the car he expected to end up with. Hell, he hadn’t even counted

on having a Mustang built, let alone needing to go and find a Mustang shell to commence said build. But when he walked into the workshop to enquire about having his Ford F1 truck rebuilt into a 1000hp streeter, the all-steel custom Mustangs sitting on display took his breath away. With two extraordinary examples of extreme car building talent on display, he was sold, and changed tack immediately. This is the result. A flawless ’67 Mustang fastback styled with traditional Shelby styling cues to make a modern-day Eleanor, and just like every other Matamata Panelworks vehicle of its kind, it is 100-per-cent steel. That bodywork is entirely hand-formed steel, with not a trace of bog to be found. Kelvin, Malcolm, and the Matamata Panelworks team will had the car on display at Meguiar’s MotorEX in Sydney between July 20–24. If ever there was a Panelworks car to be displayed in Australia, this is it.

Repco water pumps will equal or better OEM performance PERFECT FOR NEW ZEALAND’S HARSH CONDITIONS, REPCO WATER PUMPS OFFER COMPREHENSIVE COVERAGE, WITH OVER 16 MILLION APPLICATIONS COVERING AN IMPRESSIVE 10,000 VEHICLES.

R

epco water pumps have been developed using the latest technologies in seals, bearings and castings to ensure that they can perform the same or better than the equivalent OEM product in harsh New Zealand conditions. Test results using Repco water pumps speak for themselves. A test was recently performed using a Holden Commodore Gen 3 5.7L V8 pump running at 3000rpm. As a baseline, the Repco water pump offered the same or better flow and efficiency as the Holden pump when brand new. The same test protocols were then repeated after both pumps were continuously run for 500 hours at 5500rpm. When retested at 3000rpm, the Repco water pump’s flow and efficiency remained the same or better than the Holden unit. Repco stands behind its pumps in terms of consistent performance because of the highquality components and consistency that goes into the pumps’ manufacture. High-quality precision bearings are used throughout the range, with high-load applications fitted with ball/roller bearings for increased load distribution. The bearing shaft is induction hardened, with an electric current used to heat-treat the shaft. Induction hardening creates a more consistently hardened shaft than traditional hardening processes and improves shaft strength and wear resistance. Repco uses Silicon Carbide for the rotary face seal. This provides for superior lubrication qualities and

30

increased wear resistance; better lubrication and wear resistance than even ceramic seals are able to offer. Sintered Graphite is used for stationary face seal, which increases corrosion resistance. Utmost care is also taken during the manufacturing of Repco’s water pump housings. X-ray detection is employed to check that castings are of the highest quality. Housings are die-cast from aluminium in-house, using automated processes to ensure consistency.

The hard-wearing design and proven performance of Repco water pumps provides peace-of-mind to thousands. The range covers 325 part numbers, suiting over 16 million applications and more than 10,000 vehicles. Repco water pumps also come with a two year, 40,000km warranty. Contact your local Repco store on 0800 472787 for more details, or order online with NavigatorPro, the online parts ordering solution.

The extended Permaseal range now includes sets to suit popular European brands including Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen and Volvo. Stuart Chandler, Executive General Manager, AA Gaskets, says the company’s success lies in delivering excellent service and products to the customer, as well as looking at market direction and interpreting appropriate solutions as quickly as possible. “An important part of our business is our OEM technical agreements. In addition to building New Zealand’s largest range of gaskets and cylinder head bolt sets, Permaseal is committed to providing mechanics and automotive professionals with the highest levels of aftersales support. Another part of the unified approach across both sides of the Tasman is the availability for Kiwi customers to readily find news on new parts, helpful hints and technical information, all available through the Permaseal website (permasealgaskets.com) and specially devised and presented for the trade by AA Gaskets’ and NZ Gaskets’ in-house team of professionals. “You can find cylinder head bolt torque specifications and sequence guides simply by visiting our website and searching on your desired engine or vehicle listing. Once you have found the correct application, clicking on the spanner icon will allow you to view, print or download information to assist in bolt sequencing,” Chandler concludes. CHROME EXPRESSION SESSION

THE PROWEAR CHROME EXPRESSION SESSION HAS ALWAYS BEEN A MASSIVE ON-TRACK AUTOMOTIVE PARTY, AND THIS YEAR DEFINITELY DELIVERED THE GOODS Is it a Kiwi thing, or just something that car enthusiasts are inherently prone to? You know, the other side of the ‘she’ll be right’ coin that sees us frantically spannering in the days leading up to an event — the date of which is known well in advance, and set as an achievable deadline. Whatever the cause of this phenomenon, the organizers of the Prowear Chrome Expression Session are well aware of it, building the hype for this year’s event with the #roadtochrome social media campaign for entrants to document their own journey there. Run by 4&Rotary Promotions, the event has no trouble getting New Zealand’s best and toughest import vehicles in there. The all-inclusive event has evolved over the years at

Hampton Downs Motorsport Park. Moving the drift sessions to the International Circuit extension while keeping the cruising on the original National Circuit allowed both to run concurrently without worry of collision, in turn allowing more time for everyone to indulge in whatever track activities they were most keen on. The three-day weekend is the hottest event of its kind in New Zealand, and with the entire Hampton Downs venue at its disposal, provides endless action for spectators and entrants. One of its main attractions is the ‘Drive Your Mates’ on-track cruise sessions, giving entrants a chance to take their mates around the circuit. This feature makes the event more interactive than most, and was how the

event started on the Friday afternoon — a cruise session from 2–6pm with a reasonably free-flowing circuit before the massive influx of entrants on Saturday morning. The Saturday kicked off beneath a heavy blanket of fog; there’s nothing quite like a queue of headlights disappearing back into the mist and the multilayered soundtrack of highly strung engines that would rather be at wide-open throttle than idling. Although the dense fog slightly delayed the morning’s first 9am cruise session, there were no complaints as it began to burn off, leaving us with the perfect day to hit the track, all the way to the twilight cruise sessions ending at 7pm. Featuring a handful of exclusive cruise sessions,

including the hot rod and muscle car session, PAC Performance Rotary Only cruise, and Haltech Horsepower Heroes 400kW+ cruise, they’re generally a free-for-all, meaning the track is covered in all sorts — brute-force muscle cars, flame-shooting rotaries, traction-deficient imports, mega-power Euros, and stunning show-quality builds that would have looked just as at home under indoor lights. Though, there’s more to Chrome than just the cruising, with a full array of on- and off-track activities — drag racing, powerskids, roll-racing,

drifting, burnouts, and gymkhana spread across the facility, as well as a massive show and shine, trade displays, and the pit garages constantly buzzing with activity. Despite the rain settling in on Sunday morning and affecting numbers, the action never really let up and the cruise sessions kept on keeping on as the drifter track saw entrants take full advantage of the liquid horsepower. The BurgerFuel Burnout Comp kicked off at 2pm after a morning of qualifying, and the competition still pulled a decent line-up despite the

Luke Etheridge’s Holden HQ is one tough rig, but Luke’s no stranger to quick vehicles, having also owned an HSV Clubsport and Mitsubishi Evo. Though, there’s no doubt that the HQ’s the toughest of that lot, packing an 8-71 supercharged 350ci small block with Scat rotating assembly, and a four-linked nine-inch rear. Luke spent a lot of his weekend fixing issues that sprung up — an unfortunate side-effect of the mad thrash to complete the build in time. We reckon the thing is going to be well sorted this time next year

unforgiving conditions. Those conditions had the venue emptying at a rapid pace by the afternoon, as most couldn’t hack the weather, although the diehards who stayed would, no doubt, have enjoyed their time on the track. That weather was the only downside to the fantastic long weekend that is the Prowear Chrome Expression Session. Will it be better next year? If that weird micro-climate just south of the Bombays was as well-oiled a machine as the event is, that answer would be a 110-per-cent ‘yes’!

Shipped over from Australia as a dedicated burnout car, Leon Kenny’s ‘TAINTED’ Holden VZ Commodore ute was more than up to the task. Powered by a tunnel-rammed and injected LS2 on E85, he laid down a solid practice skid and was looking good for the competition. As the battery died just before he hit the pad for qualifying, the rush to get a jump-starter meant that he forgot to turn the thermo fans on, destroying a radiator hose towards the end of an otherwise awesome performance. That didn’t stop him from making the Top Five, but he was unable to get it sorted in time, otherwise we’re sure he’d have given the others a run for their money

Gavin Wenzlick’s ‘TUF RX’ Mazda RX-4 showed us all how it’s done, taking out the BurgerFuel Burnout Competition, in spite of his blown gearbox leaving him with only fourth gear to get it done. He sure knows how to pedal a car, and will no doubt be back next year — perhaps with a few extra kilos, after winning a year’s supply of Burgerfuel!

Gavin may have taken out the burnout competition, but for the full burnout experience, it had to be the ‘MYTDOG’ XF Falcon — a total animal on the pad, pumping out tons of smoke and an eardrumdestroying supercharged symphony

One of the weekend’s V8 standouts was an exercise in both function and form. Joel Cookson’s ’63 Chev Nova packs a grumpy 383ci stroker backed by a four-speed manual box, and a wicked set of staggered Simmons rims

Meet Partmaster’s online catalogue guru TODAY, PARTMASTER BOASTS AN IMPRESSIVE ONLINE OFFERING, WITH A WEB-BASED PARTS CATALOGUE SYSTEM APPLICABLE TO OVER 15,000 DIFFERENT VEHICLES. IT TAKES A LOT OF WORK TO KEEP THE SYSTEM UP TO DATE. JUST ASK PARTMASTER’S ONLINE CATALOGUE GURU, MIKE HUTCHINS.

M

ike Hutchins has been working in the parts industry for 22 years. He’s always been passionate about cars, with his first ride being a Holden Torana packing a four-speed manual trannie and a straight-six which would have been good for about 135bhp. Of course, Mike’s chosen industry has changed significantly over that time. Back when he started, the internet was shiny and new and online shopping as we know it today didn’t exist at all. In fact, Mike’s day-to-day work was initially in customer service at the parts counter, before moving into a sales rep role and on to branch management. Now in charge of Partmaster’s comprehensive online catalogue and website, Mike reckons his current role is definitely his biggest challenge to date. “Our online website and trade portal are constantly being updated with software enhancements and improvements to make the user experience an easier one,” he says. “I also manage the catalogue of inputting vehicle makes/models and all the mechanical parts that go in them. It’s a big job; it’s continually changing and requires constant data input.” Mike says that New Zealand has one of the most diverse car fleets in the world thanks to all the used imports on our roads. But for trade customers searching for a specific part for a specific make and model, the website’s unique vehicle registration search function makes it easy to find the right component. The catalogue has over 15,000 vehicles registered including European, Japanese, Chinese, American, Australian and Korean models. The registration

36

Auto Channel Issue #7 October 2018

search function can be used to match the vehicle to Partmaster’s vehicle table. There are now an incredible 1.7 million application listings and counting. Mike reckons that, back in the day, car parts used to last a lot longer. But then, parts weren’t as technologically advanced either. “We used to sell lots of basic stuff like points and condensers, but now it is all about technology. Vehicle parts are a lot more sophisticated and don’t last as long. It’s also a lot harder to service a car yourself. “For example, you can’t just change a set of spark plugs on a Subaru Legacy in 20 minutes; this isn’t a job for your average DIY mechanic. It takes a fair few hours to pull this motor apart to replace the plugs,” he says. The Partmaster catalogue includes listings for well-known brands such as OE+, Bosch, NGK, Ryco filters, Optibelt, Woking Brakes, Mixtech Batteries, Febi Bilstein, GMB, Tenacity, Monroe, Exedy and many others. The wealth of information contained within the online catalogue includes images and dimensions, which are handy for quick comparisons and confirmations the customer is looking at the right part. And after so many years working in the parts industry, Mike is adamant on one point: never buy cheap parts. “We learnt the hard way around 10 years ago, when we stocked some cheap timing belts. It caused the company grief for years. Since then, our brand positioning has been all about quality. “We stick to reputable manufacturers and brands, because at the end of the day we’re responsible for someone’s life. We are driven to get people home

safely.” With Partmaster offering such a comprehensive online catalogue, you might be forgiven for thinking the company has taken the online retail model as far as they can. Mike says there are plenty of other innovations the company is exploring, however. “These days it’s all about the mobile device. Our mobile viewing has grown 380% in the last 12 months. “If I could design my ideal future ordering tool, I’d love to have an ‘all-in-one’ system where mechanics can plug their smartphones into the car they’re servicing and be connected direct to our catalogue. “If they could automatically order all the parts they need from us and not even need to do the vehicle registration search, that would definitely make ordering parts easier and faster!” he says. For now, the online tool features plenty of other innovative aspects, such as the ability to create order templates for frequently-required parts, the ability to purchase tools and car care accessories, search for invoices and credits, or take advantage of free overnight delivery on certain items. The online offering is also complemented by an online help/chat system managed by three dedicated parts specialists available for trade and retail customers. Mike reckons Partmaster has a great staff culture and very loyal staff. “Our customers are loyal too; I know many customers that have been using the company for over 20 years; they’ve been customers as long as I have been here. My role is full of variety and the online retail space is never dull,” he says. Visit partmaster.kiwi to experience the comprehensive online parts catalogue for yourself.
