Don’t worry, I’m not going to do that stereotypical Christmas catch-up thing where I recap little Billy’s swimming sports results or update you all on the death of the family cat back in August. If you don’t remember the trend for carefully folded Christmas update letters falling out of Christmas cards from some distant relative

Suffice to say it usually included a scanned photo of some completely unrecognisable people surrounded by clip art Christmas lights. And it may or may not have been printed on a dot matrix printer. A dot what? Never mind … What I will say about 2018 is that it has felt like a year where the industry is on the verge of some pretty substantial change.

Bump steer: what is it and how can you fix it?

It won’t really start to be felt next year, or possibly even the year after that. But inevitably workshops from the Far North to the deep South will have to embrace some technological challenges. Electric vehicles might still feel, for many, like a powertrain solution that is happening to other people. But with the government’s much-touted target of wanting 64,000 EVs on Kiwi roads by 2021 (in order to keep up appearances with EVangelical regions

like California and Norway), electric cars are certainly becoming more common options, especially in our main centres. Will the government reach the target? It doesn’t look likely at the current rate of adoption. At time of writing there are around 4700 EVs registered in New Zealand. Three years ago, in 2015, there were only 500, so figures have been climbing steadily (and if anything will ramp up considerably), but no one is laying a wreath at the

gravesite of the internal combustion engine just yet. Much like the tech itself, it would appear workshops will need to consider a ‘hybrid’ approach to servicing alternativelypowered and traditional vehicles in the decade ahead. It has been a great first year for Auto Channel, with plenty of positive comments and a stellar run as the industry’s most widely-distributed trade magazine. Thanks to everyone who has supported the title in its debut year. We have plenty more planned for 2019, so keep an eye out for each jam-packed edition as it arrives at the beginning of every month. We’ll be back in February 2019 with issue ten. As always, email editor@autochannel.co.nz if there’s a topic you’d like to see covered in the magazine. Midas Howick wins Parts Connection Ultimate $10K Tool Grab

THOUSANDS ENTERED, BUT THERE COULD BE ONLY ONE WINNER OF THE PARTS CONNECTION ULTIMATE $10K TOOL GRAB

K

eith Ireland and his team at Midas Howick in East Auckland have been announced as the lucky winners of the Parts Connection Ultimate $10K Tool Grab promotion. The prize that Midas Howick have taken back to the workshop is an enviable $10,000 worth of tools and workshop equipment from Sulco tools. The prize pack is completely customizable, although Keith says he hasn’t decided yet what gear the Midas team will opt for. The Parts Connection Ultimate $10K Tool Grab promotion ran throughout October, with Pam McNickle from Parts Connection saying thousands of entries were received. During the promotion, whenever a trade customer

purchased parts from any Parts Connection member companies, they were able to enter their invoice details online and register to win. Once the customer had spent $1000 with Parts Connection, they automatically received an entry in the draw for the tool and workshop equipment prize. Keith says that the team win was down to office assistant Hayley ensuring all invoices were entered in to the draw over the course of the month. Parts Connection is a group of 15 automotive dismantlers each specializing in their own make of vehicle. Parts Connection has been in business for over 25 years and is one of New Zealand’s leading automotive parts suppliers. Visit partsconnection.co.nz to find out more.

Narva shines a light on all-new rear combination lamp ONE OF THE MOST WIDELY USED COMMERCIAL VEHICLE LAMPS ON THE MARKET, COMMONLY REFERRED TO AS THE ‘JUMBO’, HAS BEEN UPGRADED — AND IT STILL RETAINS ITS BIG FOOTPRINT

F

ollowing extensive development and testing, Narva has released its muchanticipated Model 49 rear combination lamp in New Zealand. The new lamp fits the same footprint as its predecessor Model 48 ‘Jumbo’ and Narva believes it will be as popular as its predecessor. Available in various function and colour configurations, the Model 49 features a continuous neon-like LED light-pipe that frames the lamp’s borders and meets the ADR performance regulation for tail lamps. Much like the lighting on some prestige European cars, this creates a modern, signature appearance for the truck or trailer, because the LED light pipe

stays illuminated when the other functions are off. The stop, indicator, and reverse functions are activated on the inside of the tail lamp with high quality optics to gain the attention of those following. Thanks to the sleek and slimline design (just 46mm deep), there are no visible screws or mounting holes, providing a more modern style. Snap-in retro reflectors cover these components to provide a flush appearance, while the lamp inserts themselves are replaceable with the reflectors removed. Replacement is unlikely as the lamps are made with virtually unbreakable hard-coated polycarbonate lenses; however, they come backed by Narva’s 5-year LED warranty for peace of mind.

All versions of the new lamp suit 9-33V and come prewired with 0.5m of cable for ease of installation. The new Model 49 lamp is available in several specifications in New Zealand, with coloured or clear lenses, including triple tail, stop and rear direction; triple tail, stop, reverse and rear direction; and twin tail, stop and rear direction. The new Narva Model 49 rear combination trailer lamp range is now available from leading automotive outlets throughout New Zealand.

Technical Advice: Leaking Injector Washers BLACKFERN CO-OPERATIVE MEMBERS, WELLINGTON-BASED DIESEL SPECIALISTS LIMITED, KNOW THEIR WAY AROUND THE INTRICATE COMPONENTS OF DIESEL ENGINE TECHNOLOGY. HERE THEY SHARE WITH US A FEW TECH TIPS IN DEALING WITH LEAKING INJECTOR WASHERS IN A COMMON RAIL DIESEL ENGINE

J

ared Watkins of Diesel Specialists Ltd says that one of the most common issues he sees today with modern common rail diesel engines is injector washers leaking, which allows combustion gases to blow past the injector. If the injector is under the rocker cover, this can cause major carbon build-up to the internal engine components and blocking of the oil pickup, which will result in possible engine or turbo failure. “We have found our customers are very receptive to preventative repairs and servicing when made aware of the potential costs to repair and vehicle downtime if major engine failure occurs,” says Jared. “We will often replace washers at the same time as carrying out other repairs, such as a cambelt replacement. Often it’s a quick and easy job to replace the injector washers periodically before the washers start leaking.” He says that vehicle manufacturers often recommend the replacement of injector washers as part of the vehicle’s regular service schedule. For more information on Blackfern Cooperative, visit blackfern.coop. To contact the Diesel Specialists team, phone 04 939 6616 or visit dieselspecialists.co.nz

2.Oil pickup blocked due to leaking injector washers. This can cause turbo and engine failure

4.Carbon build up under rocker cover due to leaking injector washers. This vehicle smoked and stumbled on cold start due to oil leaking down past injector washers. Major engine work was required

5.Commonly known as ‘black death’. These externally mounted injectors are hidden by excessive carbon build up due to leaking injector washers. What could have been an easy washer replacement job if discovered early is now a much more expensive, time-consuming job

3.Notice the erosion to the nozzle nut sealing surface. This nozzle was also heat discoloured. This injector required replacement as a new washer will not seal well against the eroded sealing surface

Christchurch base for Automaster and Patch Rubber up and running THE ‘GO’ BUTTON HAS BEEN WELL-AND-TRULY PUSHED FOR AUTOMASTER AND PATCH RUBBER’S NEW CHRISTCHURCH BRANCH, WITH SOUTH ISLAND SALES REPRESENTATIVE DEAN GUILDFORD SAYING THE NEW DEPOT IS RECEIVING GREAT SUPPORT IN THE SOUTH

T

he doors have been open at Automaster and Patch Rubber’s new Christchurch home for a few weeks now, with the South Island team already having received six containers of equipment stock, with more in production. Through the convenient new Christchurch base at 6 Gerald Connolly Place, Automaster and Patch Rubber are now able to supply the majority of equipment requirements for the South Island, saving customers money on freight and facilitating for much faster delivery than has sometimes been experienced in the past.

South Island sales representative, Dean Guildford, says that the team is starting to get some great support from the market. “We are really happy with how things are progressing so far,” he says. “With my colleague Mike looking after the Automaster warehousing, equipment assembly and dispatch, things are running smoothly for our clients in the region.” “The convenience of now being able to supply stock ex-Christchurch with customers or installers being able to collect as they need products, stops the problem of items being delayed with freight hold

ups, or it arriving before it is actually needed.” Patch Rubber is enjoying the new location and extra space too. This part of the business can now also have containers of stock direct-shipped from the factory to the depot door. With the extra space they have now, Patch Rubber is increasing both range and stock levels held in-branch to provide fast and efficient delivery across the South Island. The Invercargill Patch Rubber branch is also supplied from Christchurch for added convenience and efficiency in the deep south. New name and a new direction for major power tools brand POPULAR POWER TOOLS BRAND, HITACHI, HAS REBRANDED TO ‘HIKOKI’. THE NAME CHANGE REFLECTS THE INNOVATIVE NEW DIRECTION THE COMPANY IS TAKING. WHILE MAINTAINING THE QUALITY IT’S KNOWN FOR, HIKOKI ARE REVOLUTIONIZING THE POWER TOOL LANDSCAPE WITH ITS NEW MULTI VOLT PLATFORM

H

iKOKI’s aim with the Multi Volt platform is to free users from power cords and conventional battery platforms. The company has drawn on its 70 years of Japanese design and the latest advances to make larger tools — those that have traditionally relied on mains power — cordless. The new platform automatically switches voltage between 18V and 36V, delivering what the company says are previously unseen levels of performance and reliability. The main change for the business is the increased focus on technological advances; under the HiKOKI brand. The aim is to push technological limits

further, bringing greater innovation to the end user. For existing lines, the change is simply a different label. The company will continue to manufacture in the same factories to the same quality. In New Zealand, HiKOKI will continue to be distributed by Accent Tools Ltd, who have seen success in the industry over the last 30 years. There’s also good news for those who already own some of the Hitachi range: Multi Volt technology is fully compatible with both Hitachi and HiKOKI 18V cordless tools and HiKOKI’s new 36V Multi Volt Power Tools. Element 82 leading the charge ELEMENT 82 PRIDES ITSELF ON BEING AN INNOVATIVE, LEADING-EDGE BATTERY AND CHARGING TECHNOLOGY SUPPLIER; NOT A FOLLOWER. AND WHEN YOU COUNT JUST HOW MANY FIRST-TO-MARKET EXAMPLES THIS AUCKLAND-BASED COMPANY HAS, THE PROOF IS IN THE HARDWARE

E

lement 82 has been distributing batteries since 2002. But it was a side business that flourished from the necessity of customers’ needs. From early on Element 82 focused on the purpose of the product. “Why use one brand of battery over another?” It became evident that the battery manufacturers had a clear goal for their product, but for the marketing side they tried to appeal to the largest possible audience which was promoted above suitability. It also became clear to Element 82 that while a battery is an inert object and relatively simple (with no electronics on-board), it is a craft getting the right product with the right customer at an acceptable price. It requires an understanding of why you are using the battery, how long it needs to run for and how many years it is in service before replacement. All of these factors impact its purpose. Using one of only three manufacturers worldwide with pure virgin lead plates and ISO certification, Element 82 was able to provide outstanding reliability. That’s how the company started its

involvement in motor sport, where cranking performance matters. Later, the Wellington trolleybus required consistent power output, fast charging, and deep cycling — and at 600VDC, this wasn’t a job for an inferior product. In fact, the quality of materials is actually where the company’s name came from; the 82nd element on the periodic table is lead, hence Element 82. These days Element 82 prides itself on being an innovative, leading-edge battery and charging technology supplier; not a follower. Over the years, Element 82 has been the importer and distributor of many firsts to New Zealand. The company introduced Odyssey Batteries in 2002, CTEK chargers in 2005, 12V and 24V Lithium battery packs with an active battery management system (BMS) by 2008 we were the first battery company offering Lifeline Batteries and, in 2012, Remco Batteries. Element 82 were also the first to offer a full suite of AGM batteries from engine start or true deep cycle from 8Ah to 260Ah; 2v OPzV cells to 16V AGM batteries. Element 82 seeks out opportunities to

Projecta unveils its most powerful inverter to date THE LATEST EDITION TO THE INTELLI-WAVE INVERTER SERIES IS THE MOST POWERFUL YET, WITH 2400W/10A OF CONTINUOUS POWER PROVIDED BY A 240V AC SOCKET, OR 3000W/13A WHEN HARD-WIRED

T

he demand for more appliances on recreational vehicles and in boats has been answered for New Zealand lifestyles, with the introduction of Projecta’s most powerful inverter to date; the all-new 24-Volt IP3000-24. Part of Projecta’s acclaimed Intelli-wave family of inverters, the new IP3000-24 is designed to power up and run the most demanding appliances with ease and reliability on larger vehicles with 24-volt electric systems. “Computers, mini fridges, hair dryers, TVs, and even drones used on the move are becoming much more demanding and they draw a huge load,” says Tim Paterson, National Sales Manager for Narva New Zealand, which distributes the leading battery products from Projecta in the local market.

“You need a power source that can handle it with ease. And that’s what Projecta has come up with.” The latest pure sine wave powerhouse from Projecta offers an incredible 6000W of peak power for up to three seconds and 4500W for up to 10 seconds, overcoming the most demanding appliance start-up requirements. With 2400W/10A of continuous power provided by its 240V AC socket and 3000W/13A when hardwired (via the included wiring kit), there is little the new IP3000-24 can’t operate on the go with complete safety and peace of mind. Mr Paterson says the new super inverter can also be wired for remote activation via the switch node, which allows it to be neatly installed out of view making it ideal in the case of OEM applications for caravans, mobile homes and boats.

A selectable ‘eco mode’ allows the inverter to shut off output if load value is less than 50VA, preserving power. The Projecta IP3000-24 incorporates a host of advanced safety features, including voltage, temperature, fault and overload protections to safeguard against injury and damage to sensitive appliances, electrical systems and batteries. Fully isolated and meeting the latest AS/NZS 4763 standards, the input voltage, output load level, and fault-code LED indicators ensure easy error diagnosis — there’s an audible alarm to warn the user of any faults. And, for total peace of mind, the new inverter is backed by Projecta’s two-year warranty. The new Projecta Intelli-wave IP3000-24 pure sine wave inverter is available from leading automotive outlets throughout New Zealand.

Express Service concept increases workshop efficiency BUILT FROM STAINLESS STEEL AND TOP-QUALITY PARTS TO ENSURE RELIABILITY AND LONGEVITY, THE UNIPAC EXPRESS SERVICE TROLLEY ALLOWS A SINGLE TECHNICIAN TO EASILY AND EFFICIENTLY CONDUCT AN EXPRESS SERVICE

T

he basis of the express service concept is to streamline vehicle maintenance procedures through efficiency gains, ensuring a faster service for customers while maintaining (and even increasing) quality standards and reducing technician downtime. This allows automotive dealerships to increase workshop throughput while overheads remain constant, resulting in the dealership enjoying an increased return. Through the utilization of more efficient service bays through express service, dealerships stand to avoid the need to increase the overall size of the workshop to cater for increased volume; a huge cost saving. These efficiency measures can be made by reducing technician downtime through overlapping tasks, reducing times, and employing more streamlined service procedures. The ultimate objective of the express service concept is to keep the work bay productive at all times. Helping to improve vehicle servicing processes, the Unipac Express Service System (ESS) can dramatically increase the efficiency in the workshop when used

in conjunction with a carefully designed servicing process. The system is designed to improve servicing efficiency, with Unipac customers reporting impressive efficiency gains of between 138% and 173%. The system is also designed to help increase safety and above all, customer convenience. The Express Trolley is designed to reduce nonproductive movement for a single technician during the servicing process and removes the need for manual handling of heavy vehicle wheels. To further improve efficiency, it ensures all hand and air tools are arranged systematically and ergonomically to make it an automatic process for the technician when it comes to locating the right tool. The Unipac Express Service Trolley is built from stainless steel and top-quality parts to ensure reliability and longevity. The design incorporates a pneumatic wheel-lifter, brake bleeder, four air tool lines, dedicated hand tool slots and accessory storage. The trolley comes with a 48-month warranty and is

available with or without the recommended tools. For more information visit centurydistributors.co.nz, phone 04 567 1405, or email sales@centurydistributors.co.nz

Goss Vehicle Mechatronics talk high pressure fuel pumps THERE ARE A NUMBER OF FACTORS WHICH CAN CAUSE THE DIRECT INJECTION HPFP TO MALFUNCTION. THE TECH EXPERTS AT GOSS VEHICLE MECHATRONICS TAKE READERS THROUGH WHAT TO LOOK FOR

D

irect injection petrol engines are now fitted to more than two million vehicles in Australia and New Zealand. They allow manufacturers to produce a lowcapacity engine that produces higher output while providing improved economy and lower emissions. The direct injection system injects a precise amount of fuel directly into the combustion chamber at much higher pressures than traditional petrol injection systems. This allows the engine to run leaner and more efficiently. The high pressure fuel pump (HPFP) is the main component in this system. It is responsible for compressing the fuel, supplied by the electric fuel pump, to the pressure required for high pressure Injection. The HPFP is mounted to the engine and mechanically driven by the camshaft, while the ECU is able to vary the output to match the load requirements of the engine. Various sensors and solenoids provide inputs to ensure the system functions at maximum efficiency. These solenoids consist of the pressure solenoid, which controls the volume and pressure of the HPFP by changing the stroke and port location.

12

Auto Channel Issue #9 December 2018

The pressure and temperature sensors, meanwhile, generate information for the best possible combustion condition. There are a number of factors which can cause the direct injection HPFP to malfunction. Diagnosing the issue is usually straightforward. However, the cause of the pumps failure also needs to be found and rectified or the new pump will prematurely fail. What are some of the common failures and causes? Firstly, a simple lack of maintenance can have a big effect. When oil changes are stretched out or missed altogether, this can cause wear between the camshaft lobes and the HPFP follower, as well as carbon build up in the intake. This will prevent the HPFP from generating enough piston movement, reducing the fuel pressure. Fault codes will normally be logged, and the MIL will illuminate. Another issue is the application of incorrect engine oil. This can cause the HPFP to fail prematurely due to inadequate lubrication of the camshaft and HPFP cam follower, which can also damage the camshaft lobes. It is also important to inspect and remedy this upon replacing a HPFP. Due to the extremely high fuel pressures the system runs at, some leak down through the

injectors may occur when the engine is switched off. This can cause a buildup of carbon and a rich fuel mixture, creating a longer crank cycle and early failure. Or, the issue could be with the vehicle’s ECU Software. If you are diagnosing a driveability problem on a direct injection petrol vehicle or replacing a HPFP, make sure the engine ECU has the latest calibration. Newer calibrations can help solve wear problems and driveability issues and may save you from replacing the pump. If smoke on start up is noticeable, seals failing within the pump will potentially be the issue, allowing lubricating oil to enter the fuel side when the engine isn’t running. There will be numerous rich codes logged in this scenario. Goss Vehicle Mechatronics have released a range of direct injection high-pressure fuel pumps to complement their market leading range of electric and mechanical fuel pumps. The addition of the HPFP segment to the Goss range sees Goss moving with the latest in vehicle technology, with the range covering over a million vehicles on road. Royale brake pads tested to ensure maximum quality WHEN IT COMES TO COMPREHENSIVE RESEARCH AND TESTING, ROYALE ENSURES ITS LARGE RANGE OF OE QUALITY BRAKE PADS ARE THOROUGHLY ASSESSED IN ORDER TO HAVE THE RIGHT FORMULAS FOR CONSISTENT PERFORMANCE ON THE ROAD

C

ontinuous research and testing in the laboratory under all types of conditions means Royale boasts hundreds of different mixed OE quality formulas. The manufacturer’s thorough test regimes include “Share-Off” testing, a “Wear Factor Test” and “Fade In/Out Testing”. Holden specifies a certain percentage of elements in the material for the Commodore. Toyota has the same demand with the popular Echo city car. Some of

Royale’s competitor brands run the same formulation throughout their range, but this can result in early or premature failing of the pads. Simply put, their pads won’t go the distance. Royale rigorously tests High Temperature Ablation (by vaporization, abrasion, or destruction). Surface heat treatment ensures maximum efficiency at maximum temperature conditions. By using OE formulas which are original to the pad, Royale can achieve quality goals at production level. Royale Brake Pads meet and exceed OE quality. Your customer can be sure they are getting a longlife pad as well as stable friction performance across a wide temperature range (and particularly at high temperatures). Royale substrate creates a consistent thermal barrier between brake pads, caliper pistons, rotors and brake

fluid. This reduces the noise and ‘jitter’ or wobble that is often associated with poor quality brake pads or rotors. Royale Brake Pads are manufactured using direct casting stamping process and extreme high temperature pressings. This allows the friction material to adhere firmly to the metal carrier with the highest degree of accuracy. What’s more, Royale Brake Pads also come with an OE Quality Nitride Coated brake shim. This shim is designed to alleviate vibration within the caliper, along with the noise often associated with a media formula brake pad. Royale-manufactured shims have rubber, cold steel then rubber again; if you look at them side-on you can see this. The cold steel between the two rubber layers will help to distribute the heat better, allowing the pads to recover more quickly during harsh braking conditions. It also helps mitigate noise and eliminate vibration. The rubber aids brake pedal feel, which is important as the customer will notice this straight away. SAS Autoparts owns the Royale brand and brake program and do not import media formula brake pads into New Zealand. When you want quality brake pads, Royale is the trade’s first choice for quality. Visit sasgroup.nz/ for further Royale Brake Pad product information.

OEM Audio charging ahead

THE OEM AUDIO-DEVELOPED RANGE OF PORTABLE CHARGING CABLES FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLES GETS EVEN BETTER WITH NEW FEATURES AND TOUGHER CONSTRUCTION SUITED TO ANY ENVIRONMENT. WITH THE EV MARKET INCREASING IN THE COMING YEARS, THIS CHRISTCHURCH FIRM LOOKS WELL-PLACED TO STAY AHEAD OF THE TECHNOLOGY CURVE

O

ver the years, OEM Audio has established itself as a market leader in premium-quality audio systems and head units for a diverse array of modern vehicles. More recently the Christchurch-headquartered company has stayed ahead of the curve by developing an expanding range of portable EV charging cables, designed to pair with the latest electrically-driven models from manufacturers such as Nissan, Hyundai, Toyota, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Volkswagen, Renault and BMW. Taking the practical benefits of EV ownership a step further, earlier this year the OEM Audio team also began distributing a stylishly-designed slimline EV charging wall-box, offering 16- or 32-amps with a Type 2 charge socket and designed to look good in either a domestic or commercial setting. Founding director Paul O’Connor says that, while the wall-boxes have sold out for the moment, the OEM Audio technical team have been able to develop an updated portable charge cable system, which has recently been brought to market and features a host of updates and improvements. “Our range of charge cables offer a huge degree of flexibility as always with Type 1 and Type 2 plug

designs. But we’ve now incorporated a more robust construction design to IEC62752 standard including improved water-tightness,” says Paul. “Our charging cables feature overcurrent and overvoltage protection which mean they will shut of near instantaneously to protect both themselves and the connected vehicle. They also offer lightning and electric leak protection.” OEM charge cables also feature longer cable lengths (manufactured to IP66 standard) to offer further practicality, bright and clear LCD screens with a full read out including fault information, charge status lights for quick checks and robust custom-made carry bags. Paul says that the technical team at OEM Audio has also recently developed an all-new 16-amp charging cable for Type 1 vehicles with a CEE caravan-style plug, which has already raised a lot of interest. “All our products are TUV tested to full New Zealand compliance and tested again here locally. We are unique in that we also have a full custom-built EVSE test facility built to IEC standard here in our offices,” he concludes. Visit oemaudio.co.nz for more EV charge cable product information.

Mercedes-Benz CLS 450 4matic Here’s the third-generation take on Mercedes-Benz’s stand-apart sedan, which established the swoopy coupe-saloon template years before anyone else thought to do it What is it? The first generation CLS was quite apart from anything else Mercedes-Benz was then making. It debuted in 1994 as a slab-sided, melty-looking sedan; the first example of what would become a sub-category almost every premium carmaker now clamours to compete in, that of the coupe-shaped sedan. The bendy-banana silhouette has changed shape over three generations; adding and subtracting creases as exterior design trends evolve. The long, low CLS definitely has more of a familiar Mercedes-Benz ‘family face’ these days though and it’s probably all the better for it. What’s interesting about it? The big news for this latest CLS is the arrival of an all-new engine; an inline six-cylinder twin-turbo petrol that replaces the old V6 unit common across the wider

Volkswagen Amarok V6 580nm Advertura

Volkswagen’s headline act in the Amarok stakes comes with huge reserves of grunt and an impressively compliant ride. It also features a price tag that isn’t for the faint-hearted. What is it? We covered off the Touareg SUV in last month’s issue; something I described as a range-topper. Scrub that: THIS is the range-topper. Well, it is if you’re after a tough ute with all the proverbial bells-and-whistles… which recent Motor Industry Association registration data suggest almost everybody in the country is. What’s interesting about it? The Amarok’s turbo-diesel V6 has done duty in other Volkswagen Group fare in the past, including the Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne, as well as the aforementioned Volkswagen Touareg. With a distinct passenger vehicle past, it perhaps comes as little surprise that this is one refined diesel. It’s never raucous – even when cold – and thrums away in the background at cruising speeds. Volkswagen claims a zero to 100km/h sprint time of 7.3 seconds… because it’s 2018 and zero-to-one hundred times are an important stat for a ute these days. The full wallop of the Amarok’s 580Nm torque figure is available from just 1250rpm. Handy for hauling and hill-climbing alike. Is it any good? Hill climbing? Yep. On the Australasian media launch for the V6 Aventura, Volkswagen had assembled motoring writers test the ute on a well-known hill climb road in the Victorian hinterland. In winter the road – up to a place called, somewhat confusingly, Lake Mountain – climbs through the altitude towards a ski resort. In summer, it’s a place where car clubs congregate for some uphill antics. The road to Lake Mountain’s summit features 69 corners condensed into a 9km spread; the top couple of kilometers or so open out into fast, flowing

22

Auto Channel Issue #9 December 2018

straights, but for the most part this is second- and third-gear stuff all the way up. Amazingly, the Amarok – an unladen ladder-chassis ute remember, boasting nothing more high-tech than heavy-duty leaf springs at the rear axle – is a fantastic thing to pilot up such a piece of tarmac. The eight-speed automatic and 4MOTION all-wheel drive help. There’s a nice linear feel to the way the power comes back on tap as you brake and then steer through the corner; powering out again, the Amarok doesn’t leave you in a hole waiting for the torque to catch up with what’s going on. You never quite shake the feeling of sitting on top of the vehicle mass, as

opposed to being a lower-slung part of it. But the body-roll you might be anticipating simply isn’t there. It’s genuinely impressive. What’s it going to cost? Brace yourself: $89,990 plus on-road costs. That in itself is becoming less uncommon in the heady world of top trucks. But stick some aftermarket mud tyres and a matte wrap paint job on the bottom of the bill and you’re looking at a six-figure workhorse. There are two other V6-powered Amaroks’, it should be noted, although if you want a special red badge saying ‘580’ you’ll need the Aventura. The standard V6 is $69,990, while the V6 Highline is $78,990.

There’s never a good time for a flat tyre! The Holts Tyreweld Emergency Puncture Repair is a must for all motorists. Tyreweld provides a quick and simple repair so you’re not left stranded at the roadside. No wheel change is necessary. All you have to do for this quick fix, is connect the canister to the valve on your tyre and turn the button. Your tyre will then fill up with the special repair solution, to get you on your way. can do a few things to help if you’re slightly over, too,

before you go tweaking anything else.

How to Test for Bump Steer While there are specialist bump-steer bars available, in most home situations, you can simply get a wheel-alignment specialist to perform a pull-down test, or you can alternatively make your own bars. Those which LVV Certifiers use measure 1265mm end to end and have two points marked on them, point A at the far end from the hub and point B, 575mm closer. The A and B marks are a guide to locate the tape measure when reading toe, the 575mm measurement being representative of an average tyre diameter. This also makes it simple to convert between degrees and millimetres, as a 575mm distance always gives a 10:1 ratio of millimetres to degrees. So, when the toe on the bars measures 10mm, this equals one degree of toe. At home, you can run some bars straight off the hub; although, to make it the same as what your certifier will subject the car to, in theory, they should be around 300mm below the axle line. Your zero point is at unladen ride height, and, from here, you’ll need to jack the wheels up (equally) and take measurements every 20mm or so, measuring the distance between point A on the left bar and point A on the right bar, and the same for point B (that’s A–A and B–B). Note the numbers down as you go, as it’s the difference between these figures that is the value you’re looking for. Once you’ve gone all the way up to the bump stops, let the wheels droop down, again taking measurements every 20mm or so as you go. If you measure the ride height at the same time, you’ll have no problem plotting the figures. You should be able to plot the results on some graph paper and calculate the total change from full droop to full compression.

The Visual Example

1

This front-end jig, dubbed ‘Junior’, was designed specifically to demonstrate the concept of bump steer and is used by the LVVTA as an educational tool. We got access to Junior to have a play ourselves, and the results are quite frightening.

01: Here’s Junior with a good relationship between rack and suspension arms in a neutral (ride-height) position with the bars dead level out front. Both measurements Point A

came in at 1175mm, so the difference between points A and B is zero.

Point B

2

02: Taking the suspension all the way up (full compression), the points both measured 1178mm, so no bump steer, but, clearly, the points get further away as the top of the suspension cambers inwards.

1178 mm

29

3 03: Now we take the suspension all the way into full droop, and the bars are 1164mm

4

apart at both points. So, over our full range of travel, the difference between the bar width is still zero, meaning no bump steer at all — a sign of a perfect set-up.

04: Taking the suspension all the way up (full compression), the difference between the points is now 67mm! That’s scary!

05

5

05: Although hard to see, this shot shows one wheel at full compression and the other at full droop. While we didn’t take a measurement at this setting, a vehicle would feel all shades of wrong if it had a set-up like this.

The Ideal World In an ideal world, cars would have zero bump steer, like Junior did with the rack set up right, but, unless you’re designing a car from scratch with this as the key concept, it’s not that easy to achieve. However, vehicles such as Formula 1 cars have exactly that, and many street cars have just a millimetre or so, so it can be achieved.

6

The Real World Here’s a chassis that was built locally a few years ago. As you can see, it was far from compliant, and offers a very visual real-world example of what bump steer looks like.

06: Next, we took the suspension all the way into full droop. The bars measured up at 1122mm and 1067mm — that’s 55mm apart. So, over our full range of travel, the total amount of bump steer in droop would be 55mm. In total, through the full range of travel (droop and compression), in this configuration, there’s 122mm of bump steer.

One of the cars debuting at the event was Matt Kingi’s 1971 Buick Centurion, fresh from a rebuild at the hands of Simon Somerville at SK8Dogs Customs. The car originated in Ontario, where it was built for a judge, and came complete with a 455ci four-barrel engine. The rebuild in Matt’s ownership began in November 2017, and saw the body removed from the chassis for a complete overhaul of the undercarriage. Once the body was dropped back on, the handles were shaved, badges removed, and bumpers tucked in closer to the body before a respray in a custom colour complete with matte finish. The inside is just as trick, with a crocodile skin interior by Dion and the team at Cover Me and a thumping audio install.

The toys belonging to local earthmoving contractor, Vic Draper, are a bit bigger than those of most others. Vic has a good collection of vintage trucks and machinery, and this 1966 R Series Oshkosh is the latest addition. Vic imported it from Australia, with plans to use it for classic truck events in New Zealand. The Oshkosh runs a Caterpillar 3306 six-cylinder engine; the engines on the back relate to Vic’s earthmoving company — a D346 V8 engine for a 666 scraper also imported last week, and two Caterpillar 3306 six-cylinder truck engines.

RCT Extreme pads (REX) are a semi-metallic formulation that will maintain their performance at higher temperatures better than other compounds. Giving customers more confidence, RCT Extreme pads will continue to perform in both inner city driving or under heavy load on the open road, when towing and in off-road conditions. Utilizing Radial Chamfer Technology (exclusive to Repco) to shape the leading and trailing edges, maximum pad contact with the disc rotor and even distribution of brake pressure is ensured. The initial REX range consists of 41 part numbers, covering most light commercial vans, utes/light trucks, SUVs and 4X4s on the road today. For more information contact the trade staff at your local Repco (0800 472 787) or Appco (0800 200 100) branch for details.

The new Wiha 9-piece L-keys set unites several practical benefits in a single element thanks to the colour-coded product design and practical ball-end shape. Adding further practicality, storage in the ErgoStar holder ensures simple handling and organisation for professionals in their daily work. Wiha now offers a solution with safe storage and a highly visible, colourful appearance. Thanks to bright UV paint, L-keys are quick and easy to find even in the dark or in poor lighting conditions when users use a suitable light on them, such as the Wiha torch. The innovative ball end Magicring also helps to increase efficiency, making it easier to access screws and allowing users to work at angles down to 25°. The Magicring holds the hex screw in place with the help of the innovative stainlesssteel retaining spring. Meanwhile, the ErgoStar holder is easy to remove or insert L-keys into. Users simply need to twist any L-key in the holder to activate a floating mechanism which turns all keys to the side at the same time and conveniently offers the required key. Q&A: Peter Leijen, Application Engineer/Technical Trainer, AECS WE RECENTLY CAUGHT UP WITH PETER LEIJEN FROM AECS FOR A CHAT ABOUT WHAT HIS ROLE ENTAILS, WHAT TECHNICAL TRAINING COURSES HAVE BEEN PROVING POPULAR IN THE NEW ZEALAND INDUSTRY LATELY AND HOW THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY LOOKS SET TO EVOLVE IN YEARS TO COME

Auto Channel: What does your job with AECS Training involve? Peter Leijen: My official title is Application Engineer/Technical Trainer which is a varied role. My general responsibilities include delivering training courses, automotive technical support, equipment support and installation, developing new training seminars and also testing new products for New Zealand applications. AC: How long have you been with AECS and what qualifications did you need to start in your role? PL: I’ve been with the company for seven years. I achieved a Bachelor of Electronic engineering and a PhD in Electronic Engineering from Waikato University. My PhD thesis focused on NiMH (EV/Hybrid) battery forensics: instrumentation, modelling and prognostics for identifying failure. AC: What does a normal week at AECS look like for you? PL: There is no such thing as a normal week at AECS. If I’m due to be training somewhere in the country, then the van gets packed up on a Monday morning and I hit the road early afternoon. I usually aim to arrive at the training destination at 5.00pm, which gives me enough time to unpack the van and start setting up. I’m then in front of the classroom for the next two, three or four days depending on what training is on. I’ll then pack up and drive into the evening to make it

back to base to unload the following day. When I’m not away training, I spend my time dealing to the jobs that need to be done here in the office. This week, for example, has been spent pre-delivery

checking some large equipment orders. Unlike other equipment suppliers, everything gets tested and setup at AECS before it leaves. I’m also part of the team that tends to technical support questions when they come through via phone, email or forum. I enjoy helping people through their difficult problems; it’s really satisfying to hear that your advice has helped in a

successful repair. AC: What’s been the most popular training for 2018? PL: Our Automotive Electronic Diagnostics (AED) training course has been by far our most popular course over the years. The AED course teaches the diagnostician what to expect when measuring throughout the petrol engine management system it covers sensors, actuators and really ties everything together for those attending. This year our EV Customer Initiation (EV1-1) training course has been very popular with class sizes of 25+ being quite normal. Since my fellow-trainer Paul and I joined AECS, our training numbers have grown steadily to well over 800 people this year alone. AC: From someone who trains a lot of people, what’s lacking and what could be done to better in the automotive industry? PL: Knowing the basics is a big thing. I see a lot of people that could benefit greatly from this. However, good on them for coming for training to make a difference in their careers and workshops. Somebody who knows his stuff and can come to a successful conclusion when a car comes in to the workshop will make a big difference to the general perception the public has of our industry. The younger guys that I get to see coming into the industry have been very good in that they can already drive some of the diagnostic gear. I think that the younger generation need to be able to diagnose new technologies coming into the market such as variable cam timing, direct injection, broadband O2 sensors and EV vehicles, which is training we provide. I see training as an investment in future profitability with all diagnostic time being able to be charged out provided the correct approach is taken. AC: What is AECS doing to help technicians regarding Electric Vehicle training?

PL: AECS stands behind the automotive industry and aims to develop new and relevant trainings when new technologies enter the market. We have nine training courses in our Hybrid/ EV training pathway (pathway.aecs.net) covering everything from high-voltage safety to Can databus diagnostics. I think there’s a big disconnect between what is advertised regarding EV’s and the actual technology: a good line often rolled out is that “they don’t need any maintenance”. As an industry we need to be able to correctly inform the public of what maintenance needs to be done and how this affects the overall system. Take air-con as an example. If the system is undercharged it will take more battery energy to cool the passenger compartment, which directly effects the range of the vehicle and indirectly effects battery life-span. Filtering, drying and recharging the AC system is a specialist procedure requiring training and equipment. Globally there has been a massive push to bring EV’s to the market and I think that nearly every household here in New Zealand can covert to an EV. However, I think we need to remain realistic. The combination of a high initial purchase price and the scare of irreversible battery aging will keep a lot of people in ICE vehicles. A properly maintained ICE vehicle will simply last a lot longer than an EV. Once these questions have been answered there will be greater uptake. AC: What do you think will be the next evolution in the automotive industry? PL: I think we are going to see are more highlystrung smaller capacity turbo engines and even turbo and supercharger combination engines producing high power outputs. In all, I think ICE vehicles are here to stay. To find out more about Peter and the AECS team, including training seminars, phone 06 874 9077 or visit aecs.net.

1974 Mazda RX-3 Coupe AZHAR BHAMJI’S RX-3 HAS BEEN AROUND THE SCENE FOR A WHILE. IT WAS ALREADY A SERIOUS PIECE OF STREET MUSCLE SIX YEARS AGO, BUT WAIT TILL YOU SEE IT NOW

W

hile Azhar Bhamji’s RX-3 might still be dressed in its signature blue, there has been a flurry of activity over the past 12 months by a handful of key workshops — Dynamic Automotive, RSL Automotive Performance, and Choppers Autobody Shop — taking the RX-3 to the next level. The next step from a 20B peripheral-port (PP) was, of course, the addition of a fourth rotor. Az is no spring chicken when it comes to a build, and he’s the first to admit that he’s made plenty of mistakes with building cars over the years. These days, he takes a very methodical approach, meaning that this build has actually been in the pipeline for at least three years. “How I typically build my cars is to collect all the parts before the execution. I’m the sort of person that likes to have a plan in place and not waste people’s time. So, once I had all the parts needed, I then booked it in to the right places, rather than getting into it and then looking for parts. I’ve had the crank and seals sitting there for two years. All I needed was the rest of the engine parts, which I budgeted so that the sale of the 20B would fund the rest of the motor and I’d have money left over for labour and everything else,” he says. With the bodywork and styling remaining from the previous 20B iteration, the focus was always on perfecting the engine conversion. The problem was trying to retain a simplistic engine bay like you’d find in any naturally aspirated (NA) two-rotor but with twice the amount of componentry crammed in. This all centred on the positioning of the block.

40

Auto Channel Issue #9 December 2018

Az used a donated 16mm motor plate, which was then modified to suit the RX-3 engine bay. But, first, a few favours had to be called in to locate enough parts to assemble a quad rotor dummy block. “I didn’t just want to place it in there and mount it wherever it fitted; I wanted it set back as far as possible [so as] to not disturb the weight balance and keep the engine bay looking as clean as possible,” explains Azhar. The final position sees the motor sitting in a position not too dissimilar from that of a factory-fitted 13B. A new custom cross member was fabricated that now mid-mounts the motor via the breastplate, which also forms the nine-litre sump. The decision to stick with a wet sump was a hardfought battle; Az wanted to avoid the complexity of a dry-sump system and had to call in Mad Mike to make a video to convince head mechanic Che that wet sumps work fine in four-rotor applications.

The block’s final position and overall length meant that there was no avoiding sacrificing some of the factory firewall. A quick look at the quad-rotor RX-3 ‘SVANNA’ in Australia will reveal to you the position required to retain all that factory tin. Chopper also took the chance to create a little extra clearance for the serious amount of stainless spaghetti that Ronnie from RSL would eventually be tasked with creating. Exhaust clearance was something they had struggled with on the three-rotor build, so Azhar was determined not to have to raise the ride height to fit the four pipes the length of the car. This clearancing also continued to the gearbox tunnel, allowing as much room as possible without sacrificing comfort in the cabin. The factory chassis rails remain untouched, and, in an attempt to strengthen things as much as possible, any new steel added in was over-specced. From the outset, the goal with the car was for it to remain street legal but have the ability to have some fun on track. Az called on another Kiwi with vital four-rotor set-up experience — the man who first bathed our ears in the sweet note of a Kiwi-built four-rotor, Bryce McEwan of ‘FORREE’ FD RX-7 fame. Bryce had been there and had tried it all, so he knew what worked and what didn’t — he helped the team to formulate the perfect inlet runner size for the 50mm throttle bodies. “It’s not too long and not too short,” Azhar says. “I knew it would make the torque thanks to the capacity, so we weren’t too worried about the top end, instead focusing on the mid range.” Che from Dynamic Automotive, someone that Az refers to as “the guru”, was the man charged with anything mechanical or wiring related for the build, along with screwing together the block, using all new parts from front to back, including high-compression rotors. ACCOUNT MANAGER/SALES REP - BOTANY

On the dyno, the results speak for themselves: on pump gas, it churned out 388kW at only 8500rpm, which really is just a good starting point to let the motor free up before those air–fuel ratios are tightened up and the rev limiter raised. From the driver’s seat, Az tells us that the 980kg coupe feels like some sort of turbocharged animal minus any lag. As with any build, they are still working through the teething issues and getting everything dialled to 100 per cent. With the help of Pulse Performance Race Engineering’s (PPRE) Gareth Lewis, the tune is something the team will continue to work on, “once the motor frees up a little more,” Azhar says. The next stage will be building an air-box for street use, as some backto-back dyno pulls showed just how much power was being robbed with air feed. “It made 520hp

on the pull, then put the bonnet down and it went 480hp instantly. Obviously, we want to have all 520hp on tap,” Az explains. Apart from that, he reckons he is pretty happy with how the engine bay and interior have turned out. His focus will now shift to a little bit of an exterior revamp before shifting into other projects that lurk in his garage. While many won’t think that is tonnes for the street these days, it’s really the equivalent of running a 1000hp NA V8, and is a truly tough street rotors. It’s also been executed in an excellent fashion, without butchering the now very rare and sought-after Japanese tin. But that should come as no surprise, since Az is someone who is forever setting the standards here in New Zealand, and he’s already in the planning stages of his next build and has begun collecting the parts needed.
