Long range sensors’ warning to workshops
35
Situations vacant
44
The writing is on the wall. Workshops are going to have to get more comfortable dealing with electronics and software. As we point out in the story called ‘Long range sensors issue a warning to workshops’ some workshops in previous generations ducked dealing with new-fangled ECUs and specialised in underbody equipment, which remained largely mechanical. Nowadays the repair industry has no choice but to deal with modern vehicles’ electronic systems. Even repairing a windscreen or a door mirror will involve re-aiming and recalibrating vehicle sensors. A key point to note is that one size does not fit all in aiming and recalibrating driver assist sensors. Each OEM has model-specific instructions on how it must be done, and each workshop needs to assess how they will respond, what skills they need to acquire or develop in-house, or at least assess how they will manage their liabilities. The story ‘Align your thinking with ADAS’ gives a practical example — bringing wheel alignment in house, to both manage the risks involved in outsourcing alignment, as well as reducing downtime and improving earnings. There’s no doubt that OEMs are driving relentlessly to autonomous vehicles, out of fear of missing out, which is only increasing the payload of driver assistance technology on each new vehicle. What’s interesting is that the long development process for this technology means that early examples are already falling into the aftermarket’s clutches. This focus on change in the industry is taken up by two more articles about industry conferences, one in Australia, which is the biggest in the region, and one in Las Vegas that is even bigger. While no-one can accurately predict the future, it’s clear that people in the industry who are paid to think about these things will have insights to share. And who can doubt that those businesses that talk to them, listen and are prepared to pick a clear way forward out of what they learn are the ones most likely to do well in the short and medium term. Until next time,

he Piston Cranky mechanical repair shop, a fixture on Christchurch’s Columbo St, started as a family business in 2000. “All of our customers followed us,” says co-owner Karen Martyn. It was an early mover into the Blackfern family. The offer came just as the business was considering its next move. “We heard about Blackfern when the Q8 Oil rep cold-called on us,” says Karen. “It was perfect timing. We were looking for something to give us an economic boost. Since joining, the benefits to our business have grown with profit and quality.” Partner Bill Martyn says the main benefit has been in their dealings with other Blackfern suppliers. Q8 Oils and Koba for example, have helped with marketing, which supported their decision to change to Q8 as their oil supplier. “We realized the huge difference when we compared a quality product and service
alongside our current supplier and Q8 is the only oil company that had decreased its pricing as Blackfern has grown,” says Bill. “We were one of the early South Island Blackfern members to join and now see a nice increase in suppliers contacting us. You can ring up and ask a question and they are happy to help. Even if you need equipment a Blackfern supplier will help you. It’s nice to be part of a New Zealand cooperative that is growing and making a difference.” Bill and Karen enjoys the motor trade and helping customers who rely on them to keep their vehicles safe. While the business’s name might be blokey, Karen is proud of the fact 80 per cent of people dropping cars off are female and that they praise the way Bill explains jobs to them. “We genuinely care about our customers and quite a few are now great friends.” For more information, see blackfern.coop.
edarc is introducing a top-of-theline 50amp dual solar and DC input charger for a vehicle’s house battery banks. The BCDC1250D, Redarc’s most powerful in-vehicle charger, is designed to charge all kinds of lead-acid batteries but it also includes a lithium (LiFeP04) charging profile. While high output was its primary goal it also features a ‘soft start’ charging profile to handle more demanding applications. The unit will charge from both solar and the alternator simultaneously but it automatically selects the solar charge first, taking the load off the vehicle’s alternator. It is compatible with both standard and variable voltage or smart alternators, and can be used in both 12 and 24-volt vehicle systems. Redarc’s managing director, Anthony Kittel, said the company’s two other dual-input BCDC have already proven popular. “The feedback we have received has been overwhelmingly positive.” He said Redarc’s latest unit was designed, manufactured, and tested in Australia’s demanding and diverse conditions.“The 1250D has been tested in the extreme heat of the outback and can operate up to 80°C allowing a flexible install. That means it can be mounted in an engine bay or inside a caravan or camper trailer.” The BCDC1250D comes with a 2-year hassle free warranty, technical support and after-sales service. To find out more see redarcelectronics.co.nz/bcdc.
NitroFill benefits drivers and dealers
NITROGEN IN TYRES IS BECOMING A POPULAR REPLACEMENT FOR AIR, AND FOR SEVERAL GOOD REASONS
R
eplacing air with nitrogen can provide genuine benefits for ordinary road vehicles. Using proper inflation procedures and gas of adequate purity, converting to nitrogen in tyres can improve fuel economy by up to 10 per cent and increase tyre life by 30 per cent or more, and dramatically increase vehicle safety. NitroFill general manager John Murray says the oxygen in air leaks from tyres more freely than nitrogen. As car tyres generally aren’t checked often enough, many vehicles are driving on under-inflated tyres, and that compromises safety. “We are so confident in the unique quality of NitroFill that we back all NitroFill purchases with free membership in the NitroFill Drivers Club,” says John. The NitroFill Drivers Club provides tyre repair and replacement coverage, complementary
24-hour emergency towing, roadside assistance and much more. The key benefit to dealers is that while it is giving motorists the benefit of high purity nitrogen inflation product and roadside assistance, the NitroFill Drivers Club tyre inflation maintenance program is also an effective means of customer retention. “This programme is a powerful marketing tool that compels your customers to return to you regularly for this simple, yet vital service … and all their other vehicle needs,” John says. Nitrogen gas is extracted from the air with equipment that Nitrofill supplies free of charge to participating service facilities. The equipment is also available for purchase, or on a monthly rental basis. For more information call 0800 NITROGEN or 09 525 1310.

‘Check engine’ light survey highlights both most reliable and lowest cost TOYOTA AND MAZDA HAVE EACH TAKEN A TOP SPOT IN DIFFERENT CATEGORIES IN A SURVEY OF RELIABILITY AND COST OF REPAIR
C
arMD.com’s vehicle health index found in 2018 that Toyota was the brand least likely to need engine check repairs ahead of Honda’s premium brand in the US, Acura, and Hyundai. The health index specifically tracks ‘check engine’ repairs. Mazdas came top of the list of lowest repair cost, followed by Kia and Dodge. Honda and Toyota were the only two brands to appear in the top 10 of both lists. Looking at individual models, the Hyundai Tucson cost the least to repair after the ‘check engine’ light came on (US$67). Loose petrol caps or poorly installed air intake ducts were common causes of engine alerts. The car that lit up the least was the 2016 Audi
Q5, followed by the 2017 Honda Civic, the 2017 Subaru Crosstrek, 2017 Honda CR-V, and the 2017 Honda HR-V. The 2016 CR-V also made it into the top 10, coming eighth. CarMD.com reckons at least 10 per cent of cars and trucks on the road in the US are driving around with check engine lights on. A pilot test of their Pro Scan repair shop solution found 25 per cent of vehicles coming into workshops had a check engine light on.

type of lift thanks to the versatility built into its six HD camera system. The patented New Dimension measuring system provides real linear measurements. That means it’s possible to mount the cameras on the workshop ceiling, walls, on the floor, or wherever required, to work with almost any type of alignment lift. The cameras use technology with auto-focus, automatic acquisition of targets, and self-adjusting lighting to compensate for the brightness of the environment. The system will work on vehicles with a wheelbase of up to 4.8m with complete accuracy. “This system is perfect for old or new alignment lifts,” says Gary. “Even short or narrow lifts that would normally not be able to use a 3D alignment system. This is also the perfect system for full drivethrough alignment bays.” Gary says the biggest benefit of the speed is that it allows business to provide a valueadded service that creates further opportunities. “In less than 30 seconds you can now quickly check every car that comes into your shop to see if it needs alignment, and print a report to help you upsell alignments to your customers.” Results are presented in 3D graphics that allow swift
comparison with specifications in the integrated Autodata database. The software is simple to use, and checks can be set up in seconds with just a few clicks. To see the Vamag New Dimension 3D system in action, check out the Automaster website automaster.co.nz or YouTube under ‘New Dimension with hang-on-tyre clamps’. Gary says the complete kit of the Premium 6 Camera New Dimension 3D alignment system, with hang-on tyre targets can be supplied for less than $25,000+gst. The team would also be happy to discuss wheel alignment lifts too. They can supply a range of options at different price points, and will come up with a package tailored to your specific requirements. orey Oils South Pacific Ltd started 35 years go when Lex Payne, who enjoyed a sideline in servicing small engines alongside his Riverton supermarket, took an interest in the Morey Oils that a family member was representing in Auckland. A trip to the US to meet the product’s founder secured the distribution rights for Morey Oils throughout the South Pacific region. Growing the business and expanding into the other niche markets that Morey products were designed for soon took priority for Lex and his wife Phyllis and

prompted the move to Auckland. As they built the brand’s reputation and presence in the New Zealand market they also took it in new directions. They established an Australian distribution centre in Brisbane. In 1986 Lex was featured in NZ Hot Rod magazine as the originator of the Vacmatic capillary device, which fed Upper Cylinder Lubricant directly into an engine’s intake manifold. “Dad was always a tinkerer,” says Shelley Free of the second generation who, with brother Brett Mitchell (Auckland) and sister Yvette Edgar (Brisbane), are

now running the business. The Vacmatic was superseded in 2018 but Morey’s Upper Cylinder Lubricant & Injector Cleaner, Diesel Smoke Killer & Injector Cleaner, Chain Oil, and Air Tool Oil are still blended and manufactured on site in Auckland. Shelley says the company’s biggest asset remains its strong reputation. She says product quality and service have been the cornerstones of the business throughout its 35 years. It has been ISO9001-14001 accredited since 1996. “It’s an old family saying but we aim to keep this business running like the well-oiled machine that it is.”

Blackfern was set up to leverage the strength of New Zealand’s independent workshops by creating new trade opportunities, collaborating on accessing technology, and improving their business fitness in the face of accelerating changes in the motor industry. Fliss says she is excited to join long-time associate and Blackfern principal Roger Castleton in the new industry cooperative. She is also looking forward to reconnecting with friends and colleagues in the motor industry after leaving MTA in October 2018.
She is joining the Blackfern ranks alongside Christine ‘Chris’ Lambie, also a former MTA business advisor with 11 years’ experience in that organization. Chris’s CV also features nine years with industry training organisation MITO, and previous experience on the road working parts in a local dealership, and as a representative for Wynn’s. Her wealth of experience and interactions with the trade make Chris a well-known and respected figure in the industry in Christchurch. In addition to representing Blackfern, Fliss and Chris have another string to their bow: offering workshops assistance and guidance with health and safety compliance, and procedures for pre-auditing WOF QMS/PRS services. Going into bat for secondary batteries SYSTEMS DESIGNED TO PROTECT STARTER BATTERIES CAN LEAVE SECONDARY BATTERIES STARVED OF CHARGE. THE SOLUTION IS SIMPLE
M
odern vehicles use smart alternators, which means they don’t engage until they are needed but they take their cues from the starter battery, says battery specialist Element 82’s John Wightman. He says smart alternators monitor the voltage of the start battery and don’t start up until the voltage drops to around 25 per cent depth of discharge. The ECU will be running directly off the battery, which saves the fuel that would otherwise be used turning the alternator. But that could mean the alternator isn’t engaged for the first hour of a two-hour journey. Then the switching mechanism designed to charge house batteries, the voltage sensitive relay (VSR or VCR), will wait perhaps 20 minutes for the voltage in the starting battery to top up before activating to charge the second battery. By which time you’ve arrived at your destination or stopped for a break. When you restart, the alternator stays off again until the starter battery voltage drops. “Essentially you can arrive at your destination with very little
or no recharge of your second battery ever occurring,” says John. It’s a problem for all vehicles with secondary batteries — boats, caravans, or industrial vehicles with special equipment installed — and it has been this way for 10 years. But there is a simple solution, says John: install one of the new battery-to-battery or DC-to-DC chargers. They operate just like a plug-in mains power smart charger, but they get their power from the vehicle’s alternator. Importantly, they also supply current at the right voltage for the different types of house batteries — 14.4 for wet cell or 14.7 volts for AGM — and their state of charge. “We can select for a different chemistry from the start battery, which is common for deep-cycle secondary batteries,” says John.“We can provide everything from a 3A 12v charger up to 180A DCto-DC charger in stepped voltages of 12, 24, 36 or 48-volt using up to a 5-stage charge profile.” For more information, contact Element 82 on 09 476 4171 or email sales@element82.co.nz.
Repco offers Kiwis new gas shock value options REPCO SHOCKS, STRUTS, AND CARTRIDGES ARE A WELL PRICED RANGE DESIGNED TO FIT VEHICLES OLDER THAN 10 YEARS
R
epco shocks and struts are designed to cover vehicles greater than 10 years old with more than 5000 examples on road. That means Repco is fielding shocks suitable for around one million vehicles in New Zealand. Packed in singles, to deliver on the value proposition for situations where only one needs replacing, 85 part numbers will cover about 3.6m vehicle corners, or around a million Kiwi vehicles. They come complete with mount kits, which includes bushes and the strut top nut. Repco Easy Struts come complete with the spring pre-mounted, removing the need to compress and disassemble old assemblies, reducing both the time vehicles occupy hoists and labour time. All units are batch-tested to ensure quality is maintained consistently and every shock comes with a two-year/40,000km ‘no fault’ warranty. For more details, check with a Repco or Appco branch or call Repco 0800 472 787 or Appco 0800 200 100.
Ryco launches new crankcase filtration range TO CLEAN UP THE MURKY WORLD OF CRANKCASE BLOW-BY GASES
R
yco’s design team set out to develop a new crankcase filtration system, or catch can, that would set the benchmark for efficiency, life and flow. The result is the RCC350 Crankcase Ventilation System. It features a filter that presents a low restriction to the engine PCV system (positive crankcase ventilation) and incorporates class-leading oil-holding capacity suitable for engines up to 350kW producing up to 240 litres per minute of blow-by gas flow. An engine’s PCV system feeds gases and soot forced past an engine’s piston rings back into the intake manifold and shuts off when intake manifold pressures are high. It means oil and other particles can coat manifold and turbo internals and dirty air is being fed to the engine. That’s acceptable in most cars, but high-performance engines will obviously do better without that kind of contamination. The RCC350 features inlet and outlet ports that can be adjusted in several configurations helping to solve
the riddle of where to mount it in a packed engine bay. The two-part mounting bracket allows for easy removal, inspection, and servicing and a tap has been incorporated into the sump to allow for easy draining. Captive screw inserts prevent the fastening screws falling out and being lost in engine bays. Interchangeable replacement elements RCC150 and RCC200F are also available. “We all know engineers love a good challenge,”says Alastair Hampton, Ryco’s general manager of engineering and innovation. “And we’re extremely proud to say that this new range was designed, engineered, and tested in our headquarters and laboratory facility in Melbourne, Australia.” He says crankcase filtration has several benefits. “It prevents oil and soot contamination entering the clean air intake, offers great protection for turbochargers; regulates crankcase pressure, prevents oil build up in intercoolers and keeps engine components clean.” Ryco’s lab designed and built new test rigs to
validate the performance of crankcase filters and benchmarked efficiency against the international test standard ISO17536. VIPAC in Port Melbourne carried out vibration testing to an OEM automotive schedule ensuring that the crankcase performs in punishing vehicle conditions. Ryco Crankcase Systems and replacement elements are available from all local Ryco stockists. To find out more, see ryco.co.nz or call 0800 838 222.

Toyota Hiace Toyota’s iconic and ubiquitous van, a favourite with couriers and taxi drivers, is about to be relaunched with a new look and bigger aspirations
“It has been 15 years since the previous generation of Hiace was released,” says Neeraj Lala, Toyota General Manager, New Vehicles and Product. “This new generation Hiace is a breakthrough vehicle with a new shape, comprehensive safety features, and amazing versatility.” “It’s a Hiace that can be tailored to meet the needs of all our New Zealand customers.” Breaking with Hiace’s 50-year history, the first big change is the shift to a semi-bonnet design, which gave the Toyota engineers the freedom to make other big changes to the van. The semi-bonnet style positions the front wheels ahead of the front seats for increased quietness and comfort, and more car-like driving ergonomics. It also frees up more storage space up front for trade essentials. Other major improvements are a longer wheelbase for better straight-line performance and overall stability.

With a high compression ratio of 13:1, the 2l engine offers 114kW at 6000rpm and 200Nm of torque at 4000rpm. The 2.5l, also 13:1 compression boosts output from the previous generation to 139kW at 6000rpm and 252Nm of torque at 4000rpm. A new engine due later this year, Skyactiv-X, will feature a new combustion method called spark-controlled compression ignition (SPCCI), which supposedly gives the superior initial response and powerful torque of a diesel engine, combined with the linear response and free-revving performance of a petrol engine. The new range, at least in Australia, also has new model names including Pure, Evolve, Touring GT, and Astina.

particles of copper and other metals wear from the pads and rotors in the form of brake dust, which is then deposited onto the road. These particles are then washed into gutters and drains, eventually ending up in our rivers, lakes and the sea. Legislation in the US aims to reduce and phase out brake disc pads containing copper by 2025. New Zealand currently has no rules about copper content or other heavy metals for brake disc pads, but research conducted by Environment Canterbury and the University of Canterbury has confirmed that copper in disc brake pads can have a detrimental impact on our urban water quality and aquatic life. Parts and accessories: future is bright, and digital SALES OF AUTOMOTIVE PARTS AND ACCESSORIES IN THE UNITED STATES ARE EXPECTED TO GROW 14 TO 16 PER CENT A YEAR THROUGH TO 2022
U
S automotive digital marketing agency Hedges & Company is forecasting parts and accessory sales in the 2019 will be worth more than $12 billion in the United States
and nearly $16 billion in the US and Canada combined. It expects US sales alone to reach $19 billion by 2022. In its annual analysis, the company put part of this growth down to ‘digital influence’ as both consumers and trade members are exposed to more products through online searches, advertising and reviews. It says nine out of 210 consumers research products online before they buy car parts and accessories. Hedges and Co have tracked online auto parts sales since 2007. Its report says the four most popular online searches are search engines (74 per cent) retailer websites (73 per cent) manufacturer websites (57 per cent) automotive forums (47 per cent). The company predicts more than $7 billion in US automotive parts sales will come from mobiles in 2019. Photo: Andrew Seemann

Tamara Silk on track to be the fastest woman in New Zealand THERE’S A CERTAIN TRAJECTORY YOU CAN EXPECT WHEN YOU ARE BORN INTO A SPORTING DYNASTY, AND IF THE FAMILY SPORT HAPPENS TO BE DRAG-RACING YOU COULD END UP BEING THE FASTEST WOMAN IN NEW ZEALAND
T
amara Silk (22) had her first run in her new Lucas Oilsponsored alcohol dragster at the Masterton Motorplex recently and clocked a 6.4 second quarter mile at 217 miles per hour. The target is held by Karen Hay at 5.99 seconds. One of the reason’s Tamara is a drag racer is that her Dad Robin Silk has been key figure in New Zealand and California’s drag-racing scene for a couple of decades. He says the car has clocked 5.8 at 250mph, so... “She’s number two right now and the car’s certainly capable of doing it,” says Robin Silk. But nothing quite prepares you for the step up from the 500-horsepower carbureted C3 modified rail (now in the hands of 17-year-old brother Corey) to the 2600-horsepower Lucas Oils machine. “It was terrifying but good,” says Tamara of her first outing in the car. “I got a bit of a fright and took my foot off a couple of times.” But she expects she’ll soon get the confidence to hold her foot down hard. Steering wasn’t a problem. “It’s very easy to keep straight.” That’s one reason Robin decided to buy the rail rather than put her in the 3000-horsepower doorslammer he has in the States, where he works half the year building dragster chassis. Standard wheelbase cars with that much power can easily get out of shape. The Silks bought the rail only recently and were delighted Lucas Oils decided to stay on as sponsors for Tamara. “I was amazed,” says Tamara. I really didn’t think they would stay.” She’s a practised hand at dismantling rocker gear and checking valves between runs so it won’t be long before she’s pictured filling the car with her sponsors products. “I don’t want to be just a driver,” says Tamara. “I want to learn all about the mechanical side of things.” Lucas Oil distributor Logan Distribution’s Rolf Wilson says he was happy to invite Tamara to join the team. He says performance oils were one of the niche markets Lucas targeted when it was founded in 1989. The US company has sponsored many racing cars and events in America and he’s continuing that approach in New Zealand. As for being the fastest woman Tamara says it’s not really about knocking someone else off the top women’s perch. Getting into the fives is definitely the target but her goal is to do the best she can. For more information on Lucas Oils, see lucasoil.com.au or call 09 267 2246.

Safer and smarter USB chargers Standard USB sockets, even those with two sockets for different maximum currents, can overheat mobile phones and shorten battery life, and they run at high internal temperatures. PowerVerter USB chargers detect whether the connected device is Apple or Android, phone or tablet, and regulate the power supply accordingly. Whatever device is connected it will always be charged as fully as time and capacity allow. All versions in the range can be connected directly to both 12Vdc and 24Vdc systems without adjustment. And they run up to 40 degrees cooler than some USB sockets. The range includes options with IP65 rear protection, four mounting options and two pods. They all have international transportation safety standards approval. Available from Element 82 on 09 476 4171 or element82.co.nz.

Scott Luckett, writing in searchautoparts. com, says 40 years ago some workshops ducked the move into ECU-controlled engines by moving into the underbody market but workshops that don’t like saying ’no’ to customers have stayed the course and are now having to dive into the ADAS world. The earliest types of these technologies — reversing cameras, adaptive cruise control and lane departure warning systems — have been around for more than 10 years which brings them firmly into the aftermarket sweetspot, and newer technologies are now moving into that territory. That means service centres need to look at diagnostic gear that can handle all the different types of sensors and

businesses that understand what’s coming and are prepared for the change will be the winners in the big shake-up. GPC Asia Pacific, the company behind Repco and Appco, is already repositioning its business. A number of its recent acquisitions will be relaunched under the global Napa brand in New Zealand and Australia. Napa is the Las Vegas conference sponsor. GPC Asia Pacific’s General Manager of Sales and Operations Louise Sixton says: “Progressive businesses get their edge from an early exposure to innovation and industry insight, and that’s why these conferences continue to attract thousands of workshop owners from around the world. “But, with major changes in the industry gathering pace and the end-game not yet on the horizon, gaining whatever insights are available now becomes incredibly important.” New technologies are changing cars and the way people

The world's fastest pump-gas 13B AND IT WAS BUILT IN A BACKYARD SHED, RIGHT HERE IN NZ
W
hile some people harp on about true craftsmen being a dying breed in the modern world, Jeremy Hewson’s 13B Starlet is here to show you that all
hope is not yet lost. This build first hit the strip in 2014, after which Jeremy took it from a mid-10-second runner to winning the nationals in 2015, winning the Super Sedan title the following year, and now having the fastest pump-gas (98 octane) 13B in the world. You could say Jeremy was born into drag racing, having been dragged to the strip from six months old to watch top door slammers with uncapped meth-burning blown motors. With an upbringing as proper as that, and methanol in the blood, it was almost inevitable he’d eventually find his way onto the other side of the Armco and into the driver's seat. “I had a VK Commodore that I’d put a later model V6 in, and my boss conned me into racing for his team at a team event at Taupo. I ran something slow like a 16.6, but I was bitten and the very next day I ordered a nitrous kit.

Jeremy tells us is a good compromise between size and
losing spool on the line. “The bigger you go turbo wise, the harder it is to spool and the less consistent it is.” However, the swap has made a huge difference, with the little motor now making power all the way to 10,000rpm. It’s now a matter of changing the diff ratios until the car is using all the power, as it is currently a good 2000rpm short at the traps. All-out pace isn’t all that Jeremy is after, though; he’s also looking for consistency and a second championship. “I’m currently leading the points and looking to take another title. I won it back in 2015, and don’t want to be a one-hit wonder.” If the early season events are anything to go by, the car is going to be hard to beat, especially once that all-new rear end is dialled in. It’s only a couple meetings old, remember. While Jeremy tells us that he’s pretty happy with the current pace, he has said that before — and he knows as well as anyone reading this that it won’t be long before the car goes back under the knife for his next round of upgrades; it’s just part of the game.
Cruise Martinborough 2019 THE COOL CALM CHARM OF SMALL TOWN MARTINBOROUGH HELPS TO MAKE THE ANNUAL CRUISE MARTINBOROUGH AN EVENT NOT TO BE MISSED
I
n late January, Cruise Martinborough took over the small rural town in the south Wairarapa. There’s plenty to do over the four days the event runs; meet and greets, a pub quiz at the PHOTO: CAL THORLEY
Pukemanu Tavern, plus cruises through Wairarapa towns such as Greytown and Carterton, a drag strip, and the big event; the grand parade into the town square, which saw 420 cars roll through. There’s also plenty of appeal in the downtime and stress-free atmosphere the event offers — it’s part of what keeps people coming back.
Nigel and Yvonne Rawlings made the trip down from Otorohanga in their LS-powered four-door Chev. The pair are members of Kiwitown Cruisers, of which six cars went down for the event. While Martinborough is the furthest the pair have taken the home-built car to date, a South Island trip is on the cards at some stage.

Doug and Gillian Hooper’s Ford Bonus is hiding a secret under the hood — a blown Chev. It’s been on the road now for 10 years, but still looks just as good today as it did when they finished it. The pair have attended Cruise Martinborough once before in a different vehicle, and love how relaxed it is.
There are few cars out there with a story as good as Dave Mears’ ’52 Chev. Dave’s late wife purchased the car for his 30th birthday some 46 years ago for $1200. Dave and his son Phil pulled the car apart 37 years ago, after which Dave drove it for 30 years before taking it back off the road. It’s only just hit the road again after a major rebuild, which involves plenty of custom chassis work — meaning it now looks just as good underneath as it does on top.
At wasn’t all plain sailing for Kaikoura Hop organizer Doug O’Callaghan and partner Fonda. The dramas began with their Holden panel van ripping off a lake pipe getting onto the ferry, and continued with a cracked clutch fork at Lake Ferry. Thankfully the local BP service station gave him full access to their new workshop where he could have the fork welded up. Tony Kirkwood and Craig McKay, who they met at the event last year, were a huge help in getting the car back on the road.

RACER DAVE BRENNAN #40 CAR CHEVROLET CORVETTE C5 ENGINE: 358ci Dale Earnhardt Chev (788hp) INFO: The only new car in the field, Dave has built the car from a bare chassis over the past two years. The chassis is a copy of a Prat and Miller Racing one, although with updated pickups. Son of New Zealand Trans Am legend Grant Brennan, Dave grew up around these monsters. No stranger to racing, once this car is dialled, Dave will be one to watch. “They are an amazing car to drive. No driver aids, no ABS, no traction control, and for the most part, H-pattern gearboxes.” Under the hood is a motor built by the late Dale Earnhardt — one of the last nine engines he ever built. The car was built over two years in his garage. Manfeild was the first running of the car since it was completed.
RACER DAYNE RUNNING #1 CAR MEGATECH CHEVROLET CORVETTE C5 ENGINE: Hendrick Motorsport 358ci 2nd Gen Nascar Chevrolet (660hp) INFO: One of a two car team with father Dennis, both cars were originally Mark Petch Motorsport machines. This car was purchased unfinished and still on the jig. Completed by Alan Ferguson and HiTech Motorsport, Dayne has run the car last season and in a few select GTRNZ rounds. “I started out when I was 16. I’ve driven utes and V8 Tourers, but the power and grip in these things is amazing.”
RACER: DENNIS RUNNING #3 CAR: MEGATECH CHEVROLET CORVETTE C5 ENGINE: 358ci Chevy SB (700hp) INFO: Built in New Zealand by Mark Petch Motorsport, the C5 was shipped to the USA and raced there as well as in Australia, with great success. Denis, alongside Alan Ferguson, is the reason the Trans Ams are back, so clearly the love runs deep. “Between me and Alan Ferguson, we got together with Bob and it really took off from there. All we need is for the South Island guys to come join us.”
RACER: GEORGE SHEWEIRY JNR #12 CAR: HUFFAKER ENGINEERING QVALE MANGUSTA ENGINE: 366ci Ford D3 INFO: Italian influence in Trans Am? Yep, this is the extent of it, and it was a USA Championship winner in 2000 and second in 2001. Built to help sell the Mangusta street cars in the USA, George’s dad found the car in the USA and imported it a little over a year ago.
RACER: GRANT HANNAH #96 CAR: ROCKETSPORTS CHEVROLET CORVETTE C5 ENGINE: 358 cube Chevrolet INFO: After watching them thunder around Baypark as a teenager, it’s been a longtime dream of Grant’s to race one. The C5 was picked up earlier this year in the USA, and sees Grant realize his dream, stepping up from years of racing classics.
