It’s a pity staff members are excluded from magazine promotions because this is one I’d be tempted to enter myself. Check out the offer on the front page, go to our website autochannel.co.nz, enter your work email address and your business categories and you’ll go in the draw to win a $3000 package of high-tech, versatile welding gear. Remember, your chances of winning this prize are spectacular compared with the chance of winning Lotto. Auto Channel goes to workshops around New Zealand but that’s a pretty exclusive club compared with the entire population! And it’s good gear! We are also introducing a new feature in this issue called Garage 360. We will check out a different workshop each month, talk about the features of that business, and what tools work best there. It’s a great way to share ideas, and maybe show off a little. If you are keen to feature your workplace in Garage 360, just drop us a line at editor@autochannel.co.nz. You’ll also find in this issue some other great workshop gear such as wheel lifts. Once a rarity, workshops are now finding them a worthwhile investment in productivity and safety. One of the most popular high-end vehicle diagnostic tools is back in a new version, NZmotoroils.com is also adding a digital dimension to the traditional oil industry and, thanks to Kiwi Cylinder Heads, we take a deeper dive into the problems that cause cylinder head failure. You’ll never run out of variety in this industry!

Kiwi auto trade gets ringside at Shanghai Formula 1 HONDA PARTS TAKES ITS COMMITMENT TO THE AUTO INDUSTRY SERIOUSLY, TAKING CUSTOMERS OVERSEAS TO ULTIMATE MOTORSPORT EVENTS
A
handful of New Zealand’s automotive trade members got to experience the ultimate expression of automotive excellence recently, at the Shanghai Formula One (F1) Grand Prix. Lewis Hamilton will go down in the records as the winner of the 1000th F1 race but there was a group of Kiwis trackside who also won big that day, and for whom this was definitely not just another day at the office. Honda New Zealand’s parts division runs regular scratch and win promotions aimed exclusively at the trade purchasing genuine Honda parts. After several years taking lucky winners to premier motorsport events all over the world, it now almost qualifies as a Kiwi motor trade tradition.
Formula 1, but being taken around the sights of the city just made the trip fantastic. Thanks again for the effort put in over and above the motor racing.” The current promotion will take the next group on a luxury self-drive Winnebago campervan trip to the final round of the Indycar series at Laguna Seca. It kicks off on September 17, flying to San Francisco and picking up the campervans before a night tour to Alcatraz. The following days take in a baseball game — Oakland vs Kansas City Royals — a tour of San Francisco’s iconic sights, and the drive down the magnificent California coast to Monterey for the IndyCar weekend.
Monday offers freedom in the land of the free. Perhaps a visit to the world-famous Monterey Aquarium, a round of golf, or a day on one Califorinia’s famous golden beaches before driving back to San Francisco for the flight to Auckland on 24 September. Purchasing genuine Honda parts earns scratch and win cards offering a range of IndyCar and Scott Dixon promotional merchandise — he’s a Honda ambassador — and maybe the big one, one of five places for winners and their partners on Honda Parts’ next trip of a lifetime! For more information, see honda.co.nz/roadtrip.
The latest group of lucky winners have just returned from their four-day trip to the Chinese Formula One Grand Prix in Shanghai. The prize included luxury
accommodation, a river cruise, practice day, race day, solo adventuring around China’s most exciting city and a guided tour. John and Sue Hamilton of Amberley Collision Repairs and Michael Collins of Prima Collision Repairs, Manukau, both said the event was “a trip of a lifetime”. Auckland Panel & Paint Group’s Derek Perkins joined in thanking a superb host. He said it was “an absolute blast” and great to share it with a good bunch of Kiwis and new friends. Rotorua’s Douglas Automotive & Engineering owner, Vince Douglas, was impressed by the attention to detail “and of course the racing was wicked”. Carpro Penrose owner Lee Burridge wasn’t sure what to expect from China, so he was happy to be part of a Kiwi contingent. “Thanks to Honda Parts, not only was the highlight

Cutting edge diagnostic tool launched at AAA Expo G-SCAN3 RAISES THE DIAGNOSTIC BAR WITH A BIGGER SCREEN AND NEW FEATURES
Nitrofill Drivers Club keeps customers coming back SIGNING CUSTOMERS UP TO THE NITROFILL DRIVERS CLUB KEEPS THEM SAFE AND AND KEEPS THEM CLOSE
T
he NitroFill Drivers Club is a complimentary benefits program available solely to customers of select automotive sales and service companies throughout New Zealand. The NitroFill Drivers Club offers full breakdown assistance such towing, jumpstarts, lockouts just like the more expensive roadside assistance programs but it has added features. As the covernstone of the NitroFill club is based on filling the vehicle’s tyres with nitrogen, which reduces tyre wear by 30 per cent or more and improves fuel economy, tyre repair and replacement due to an on-road incident is fully covered. NitroFill general manager John Murray
says the annual membership for motorists costs $50 but many dealerships participating in the scheme
T
he new G-Scan 3 was one of the most talked about product releases at the Australian Auto Aftermarket Expo in Melbourne recently. This third-generation version strengthens the product’s reputation as a ‘must have’ tool. Changing the operating system to Android has increased its speed and decreased file storage size. The Android OS has also enabled provision of a built-in web browser, 13MP camera, and email client directly on the tool. A larger 256mm screen, battery, 64GB memory
and MicroSD card slot modernise the hardware. The ability to update all manufacturer software directly on the tool is another welcome addition. The new version doesn’t make the G-Scan 2 obsolete. It will continue to be sold and serviced for the foreseeable future, and it remains a capable and current tool. For all your diagnostic needs from G-Scan, Autel, F-Car, Launch, Ross-Tech, Autoland, and Opus, contact GPC Asia Pacific Group’s Diagnostic Sales & Training Manager Dean Guilford on 027 643 1608.
provide membership free to their customers as a sign of their commitment to care and safety. But workshops also benefit from their customers’ club membership. The club sends members a monthly reminder to check their tyre pressures, which sends the customer back into the workshop for nitrogen. That gives the workshops a chance to check the car for other maintenance issues on a far more regular basis than the scheduled service intervals, which can be a year or more apart. “It’s a great way to build a relationship,” says John. NitroFill supplies nitrogen generators that extract nitrogen from air, and supplies it free of charge to service centres that join the programme. However, the equipment is also available for rent or purchase. For more information, call 0800 NITROGEN, or 09 525 1310.
Van drivers not taking care of themselves MERCEDES-BENZ VANS URGES THE HARDWORKING VAN COMMUNITY TO FOCUS ON THEMSELVES AS 40% SKIP A VISIT TO THE DOCTORS
T
wo out of five (40%) UK van drivers, owners and operators have only been to the doctors once, if at all, in the past year, according to new research from Mercedes-Benz Vans. Busy schedules, working long hours and regularly being away from home could contribute to a lack of self-care among van drivers, with 60% also acknowledging that their lunches are not the healthiest. Three out of every five (61%) van drivers surveyed also confessed that they don’t eat fruit or veg for their lunch every day, with two thirds having to drive over 5km to try and find a healthier lunch option. According to the Mercedes-Benz Vans Business Barometer which monitors the opinions on more than 2000 van drivers and owners, respondents
10
Auto Channel Issue #13 May 2019
overwhelmingly agreed that they would like to see healthier food options available at service stations in the UK (95%). The number one reason they put off eating healthier for lunch is because it is too expensive to do so (41%). Over a third (33%) say they have to add significant time onto their journeys to find healthy food options. Mercedes-Benz Vans UK managing director Steve Bridge says while not everyone needs to visit a doctor, to not go at all in a year feels like the van community just isn’t taking care of itself. “As an industry, the van sector is spent focusing on others – from parcel and delivery couriers, e-grocery, service engineers and facility management companies are all spent focused on benefiting others, but we think it’s time that more self-care is taken.
“We are asking all van owners, operators and drivers to seriously consider speaking to their doctor or their local pharmacy about that little niggle they’ve been ignoring, or the persistent symptoms that have been brushed off, or the secret concerns around stress or anxiety levels. We have to take care of ourselves so that we can continue to take care of businesses.”

See better in wet weather
GOOD VISION, ESPECIALLY IN BAD WEATHER, IS A PRIMARY SAFETY FEATURE THAT IS OFTEN OVERLOOKED
R
ain can cut down vision through a vehicle’s windscreen significantly, especially if the wipers are worn, but there is a way to make it clearer and safer. While there are a number of treatments and washer bottle additives available to consumers, treating a customers’ car windscreen when their vehicle is in your workshop can make a lasting and caring impression on the customer, especially as we get into the rainy season. Just one application of Rain-X Original Glass Treatment can make a dramatic difference to driving visibility. It’s simple to apply and can be used on any type of glass. Rain-X seals the microscopic pores of glass with a super-slick, non-stick invisible barrier that repels rain, sleet, and snow on contact. Rain drops bead up and are blown away by the wind flow from driving, improving all-weather visibility, safety and driving comfort. A freshly treated window provides a dramatic display of customer care, literally right in front of their eyes. Winter brings more rain and reduced light, so now is the ideal time to apply the Rain-X treatment or suggest it to customers, according to Tim Paterson, National Sales Manager with Griffiths Equipment, which distributes Rain-X products throughout New Zealand. It is available here in 103ml and 473ml
bottle and wipes. “It’s not generally well-known that glass is porous, trapping water and making it more difficult to disperse. Over time you also get a build-up of dirt, grime, oil and other chemicals on the surface, which makes it even more difficult to see, as plain water won’t easily remove it,” says Tim. Rain-X Original Glass is applied to the glass surface with a cloth and rubbed into the glass exterior, then allowed to dry before buffing with a dry cloth. For best results, a second application is recommended, particularly if the glass has not been cleaned for some time. The difference can be seen immediately as raindrops have little to adhere to and fly off the windscreen while driving. Rain-X also works well in repelling sleet and snow and on frosty mornings and makes it much easier to remove ice from glass. Insect debris is also easier to remove. Tests conducted by a major university in the United States also indicated improved driving response times of up to a full second or more in vehicles with glass treated with Rain-X. At highway speeds, that’s the equivalent of almost four car lengths of extra

stopping distance. Mr Paterson says retailers around New Zealand have been stocking up on Rain-X Original Glass Treatment in readiness for the winter rush, so there should be sufficient supplies available. But it’s not just winter that requires good visibility on the road and drivers are recommended to apply Rain-X regularly throughout the year to get the best safety benefits. And just as Rain-X Original Glass Treatment can keep vehicle glass clearer, it can also be used on shower glass to prevent water smears caused by a build-up of soap and scum. Website expands NZmotoroils quality of service NZMOTOROILS.COM BRINGS ONLINE BUSINESS MODEL TO A TRADITIONAL INDUSTRY
Z
ic Motor Oils distributor NZmotoroils. com is offering a full online new trade account approval process to the oil industry for the first time in New Zealand, says general manager Nathan Sheehan. “We are serving a traditional industry in a new way,” he says. His new company’s commitment to e-commerce is borne out by company having the same name as its website. “That’s something new in this industry, too,” he says. Nathan says NZmotoroils.com has a proven product in ZIC Motor Oils so the new company is adding an e-commerce platform onto an established business, which gives customers more choice and convenience in the way they do business. Customers can apply to set up accounts entirely on online and be up and running in a day or two. “We don’t need to rock up with a paper account and go back and process that,” he says. “It’s 2019.” But after someone has signed up online: “100 percent, we follow up with a call.”
Nathan says his team has a solid reputation for service and existing customers only see the new online platform as adding to that quality of service. “And we are still only a phone call away.” Most workshops work beyond standard office hours and being able to order online at any time and take deliver the next day, at the latest, is just more convenient. Nathan says NZmotoroils had a soft launch for the website as they wanted to confirm it all worked in a live environment before putting pressure on it and they are working on a couple of tweaks. “And we are already looking at other ways we can improve the site.” The site’s Lube Guide is rapidly approaching completion. Now that NZmotoroils has added Exol Lubricants to its portfolio, Nathan expects the company will have product recommendations for 99 per cent of the New Zealand motor parc in the guide. For more information, see NZmotoroils.com or call freephone 0800 942 645.

ff-road driving gets more interesting at this time of year as water and mud no longer restricts itself to stream beds. Of course, the goal is not to get stuck but for many people that’s where the fun really starts. And it’s a whole lot more fun if you have all the right gear for self-recovery. A spade is the first essential but then you need something to put in front of bogged wheels to

provide traction. Solid boards might do the trick but Maxi Trac’s Flexible Recovery Track has so many more advantages. This thermoplastic rubber track provides great traction and its galvanised steel cable construction is tough enough to take the torque. The 1.5m long 22cm wide track rolls up into a compact and easily handled package so one or more of them should be in every off-roader’s vehicle. Another great recovery option is a high lift jack, especially for vehicles stuck at awkward angles. Maxi Trac’s MTHLJ is rated at 2000kg. Place a block under it to provide a firm footing, find a good lifting point then crank the vehicle back up to a more level position. Get something solid under the wheel that will redistribute the weight and drive or winch out. No serious off-roader would be without a winch. The Maxi Trac MTRW9500 uses Dyneema rope instead of cable, which makes it great to use and good value. Dyneema is the same no-stretch kevlar rope used in top end racing yachts instead of wire rigging. It is much lighter for the same strength, saving weight where you don’t want it, and it’s much easier to handle than cable. The other essentials tools for use with a winch are a tree saver strop, a hefty shackle and a snatch block. Maxi Trac’s tree trunk protector MTTTP12TS3 is a generous 3m in length and its 75mm wide polyester webbing with reinforced ends has a breaking strain of 12,000kg. Inserting a snatch block on your recovery line halves the load on the winch
by looping the line back to the winch. Maxi Trac’s MTS8TS3 is rated at 8000kg. Place the block on the recovery line and attach it to the strop around the tree with a shackle. Lead the line back to vehicle. Remember to drop something like a mat or another rope over each of the recovery lines to prevent them flying in the air if something goes wrong, and fire up the winch. If there’s another vehicle on hand to pull you out, it’s polite to use your own snatch straps. Maxi Trac has come to the party with two new products, the 11,000kg MTSS11TS3 and the 8000kg MTSS8TS3. Maxitrac products are available exclusively from Repco and Appco stores.

TRW — a trusted brand in brake pads TRW IS A MARKET LEADING SPECIALIST IN BRAKING SYSTEMS, OFFERING HIGH QUALITY, INNOVATIVE AND RELIABLE PERFORMANCE
T
RW developers have come up with a trick new way to get the best from front or rear brake pads immediately after replacement: TRW Cotec. The advanced silicate coating is applied to the friction material of replacement brake pads, resulting in an improved contact between the brake disc and pad. TRW Cotec brake pads can stop vehicles up to seven meters quicker than other premium brake pads during the first few stops following a pad change, when new pads are still bedding in. This innovative technology means TRW outperforms major competitors during the bedding-in period of the pad, when the friction co-efficient is lower than usual. This gain in safety from the moment the vehicle leaves the workshop has prompted TRW to coat the majority of brake pads with Cotec. More than 90 per cent of the brake pads that TRW produce, have already been Cotec coated. TRW has also developed DTEC, a premium quality, ceramic formulation low dust brake pad with all the safety benefits of its main Cotec-coated range, plus low-dust technology. It reduces reduce rim surface dust levels up to 45 percent. TRW manufactures its friction material compounds in-house to create optimum material blends combining raw materials from rubber to
graphite, that will generate the safest brake pad performance across all conditions. TRW’s scorching techniques heat the pads to 600-700oC, which also helps to reduce beddingin time and initial fading. Automatic moulding presses allow for deep moulding technology, which produces a more consistent density and porosity. This also gives drivers leaving workshops with TRW replacement brake pads fitted to their vehicles more comfortable journeys, as they minimise judder and noise. Every element of TRW’s aftermarket brake pads is tested multiple times, including the back plates that carry the friction material. To prevent rust from developing on the back plate, TRW uses a powder coating, and the specialist design from TRW helps the brake pad to resist high shear strengths as well as hot temperatures. TRW has also recently announced the introduction of TRW Electric Blue, the world’s first brake pad for electric vehicles. TRW Electric Blue brake pads have been NVH tested (noise, vibration and harshness) and is proven to create less noise and vibration, which is more noticeable in electric vehicles. The manufacturing capabilities, quality commitment, innovation and extensive testing that support TRW brake pads and discs mean

Brake testing and training: combine for best results THE STT45 BRAKE TESTING LANE EQUIPMENT PROVIDES TECHNOLOGY AND TRAINING TO GIVE DRIVERS, OPERATORS, REGULATORS AND THE PUBLIC PEACE OF MIND
J
ust consider a B-train hurtling down the road at 90km/h or more with 30 tonnes of weight. If you were standing in its way, you’d want to know that its brakes were in full working order. Designing and manufacturing truck and car brake testers that provide strength, accuracy and reliability is a responsibility engineering and training organisation AECS takes seriously. “We have used our combined experience in engineering and education to design a new range of roller brake testers based on a European configuration that will literally stand the testing of brakes and time,” says AECS’ Paul Corbett. STT stands for Safety Testing Technology, AECS’s own brand of truck and car brake testers, designed and engineered to AECS specifications to meet NZTA standards. They are also designed to fully test the New Zealand’ truck fleet’s ability to withstand the punishment dished out by our varied road conditions, for years to come. The STT truck brake test lane comprises three components that can be fully integrated or installed separately; a side slip detector (wheel alignment), a free play detector (shaker plates) and the 45kN
brake force detector, which can accommodate wheels from 600mm to 1100mm in diameter and an 18-tonne axle load. “We now have a range of brake testers built to last in even the toughest environments and it’s one we’re immensely proud to have our name on,” Paul says. The hardware is designed to fit common pit well sizes. The other key consideration is a user-friendly interface. “We used our years of experience with brake testers to put together a software package for the roller brake test system that was easy and intuitive. And we do what others can’t. As an educator we are ideally placed to provide training and support for our STT equipment and we are NZTA approved to provide training for COF vehicle inspectors,” Paul says. AECS takes pride in being known for its attention to its after sales training and support. “We like to share with you and your team the best of our training, and keep things rolling with ongoing support as and when you need it.” AECS STT45 test lanes and brake testers have been installed across New Zealand. For a closer look, see a recent installation at stt45.aecs.net, or more information call 06 874 9077 or email paul@aecs.net.

Renault Megane RS THE NEW RENAULT MEGANE RS FEATURES EXOTIC NEW CHASSIS TECH THAT PUSHES THIS LATEST GENERATION CAR TO THE FRONT OF THE HOT HATCH PACK
R
enault has set track records for front wheel drive at several motor racing tracks and is keen to retain its reputation for delivering seriously fast hot hatches. The previous generation of this car, the Renault Megane RS III, built a reputation as a nimble and fast car but the chassis engineers have gone all out on this model, introducing four-wheel steer to this sector. Called 4Control, the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction to the front wheels, up to a maximum angle of 2.7 degrees at low speeds. Combined with 20 per cent more direct steering, the 4Control system comes into its own on twisty, winding roads. At higher speeds, the front and rear wheels turn in the same direction, limited to a one-degree angle for the rear wheels. The switchover point is set at 60kph, which increases to 100kph in Race mode which, as the name suggests, is aimed at racetrack use. The new RS is available with two chassis: Sport and Cup. The Cup option stiffens suspensions settings — springs, shock absorbers, stops and anti-roll bar stiffness — for better track performance. The new Megane RS’s Sport chassis is designed to be more versalite and better on poor quality or uneven roads. It comes with new shock absorbers and an electronically-controlled torque distribution system which uses the drive wheel brakes to limit understeer and improve traction when exiting corners. The Cup chassis, aimed at hardcore sport driving and track use, offers a 10 per cent stiffer damper system and a new Torsen mechanical limited slip differential. The second new feature on both models is hidden in its suspension: hydraulic compression stops fitted to all four shock absorbers. This rally-inspired technology involves integrating a “shock absorber within the shock absorber”. At the end of the piston travel another set of damping valves are activated dispersing the energy in what would otherwise be a thump into the bumpstops, damping the movement of the wheel before the bump stop. By dissipating
the energy without transferring it to the wheel as a traditional bump stop would, the compression hydraulic stops help avoid any rebound and pendulum effects, enabling optimum control of tyreground contact. Overseas journalists have praised the car’s handling and ride and, on paper, it looks like a great formula for New Zealand’s winding and sometimes lumpy roads. As you would expect, the new car has more horsepower. The new generation 1.8-litre direct injection turbo engine, delivers 205kW and 390Nm from 2400 to 4800rpm thanks to a new cylinder head developed jointly by Renault Sport Cars, Renault Sport Racing and the Renault Technocentre1. They also tweaked the twin scroll turbocharger to improve torque at low revs. The six-speed manual transmission is maintained on the new Megane RS or you can have a six-speed EDC dual-clutch gearbox with paddle shift. This gearbox swaps cogs in several models in the Renault range but it has been beefed up for the RS. Gearshift points change depending on which driving mode is selected. In Sport and Race modes, holding the paddle under braking in manual mode makes the EDC gearbox change down several gears. It then selects the best gear to exit the corner as efficiently as possible. The body is wider by 60mm at the front and 45mm at the back than the Megane GT, and
the ride height is lower by 5mm. It also features wing-mounted air extractors and a more efficient rear diffuser. Renault’s Multi–Sense offers five drive modes: comfort, normal, sport, race and ‘Perso’ which allows drivers to customise the settings of the various technologies and driver aids. Standard Megane driver aids include adaptive cruise control, emergency braking, safe distance warning, blind spot warning, rear-view camera and handsfree parking. The 22cm touchscreen can be used to manage all of the vehicle’s features. Options include RS Monitor which gathers and summarises information from forty sensors around the car and displays vehicle settings in real time. The RS Monitor Expert option exports recorded data to the RS Replay website so drivers can analyse their laps in detail and compare them with other users’ data. Patrice Ratti, Renault Sport Cars managing director, says the Mégane III RS, launched in 2009, became a genuine icon. “Replacing it was a real challenge for the entire team. We’re proud to have managed to produce a car with improved cornering efficiency, largely due to the introduction of 4Control. The system improves both agility on tight corners and stability on fast bends, on the road and on the track. Its versatility also makes it perfectly suited to everyday use.”

with both male and female drivers, growing by 98.3% and 101.1% respectively, compared with the year before. Overall ownership of ‘alternatively fuelled vehicles’ increased by almost 30% last year. More than 620,000 hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and battery electric cars are now on UK roads. The change has helped drive average CO2 emissions for the UK motor parc down 17.8% compared with 2008, although vehicle numbers continue to rise. The average new or updated car model emits 8.3% less CO2 than the model it replaced, highlighting the importance of fleet renewal. The UK’s record 34.9 million-strong car fleet
has never been more diverse, with more than 1600 model ranges and almost 68,000 different specifications on the roads last year. Superminis continued to dominate, making up a third (33.2per cent) of all cars in the parc, but dual purpose vehicles saw the biggest growth, up 10.6 per cent. There are 3.9 million dual purpose vehicles in use in Britain, closing in on the 4.0 million small family cars. Family hatches and saloons saw the largest fall, down 4.7 per cent to four million. Black is now the most popular car colour in the UK, knocking silver off the top spot. More than seven million (20.1%) cars on the road are black, closely followed by silver and, in third place, blue.
Triton takes to the track THE NEW MITSUBISHI TRITON PICK-UP TRUCK IS BACK ON THE RACETRACK THIS MONTH IN ITS SECOND OUTING IN THE 2019 ECB ‘SUPERUTES’ SERIES
B
acked by Mitsubishi Motors Australia, Team Triton Racing has three new Series 6 Triton utes entered into the 2019 season, driven by Australians Elliot Barbour, Cameron Crick and Craig Dontas. Fellow Australian and double Dakar rally champion Toby Price will also drive for the team in select rounds of the championship. It picked up a third place in its first outing at the Adelaide street circuit in March. Based on standard Mitsubishi L200 production vehicles, the SuperUte versions are powered by a tuned version of the stock 2.4-litre turbo-diesel engine, which retains its aluminium engine block and pistons but gains modifications such as uprated camshafts, a modified oil sump, larger injectors and larger fuel rails. The engine also receives a larger GTurbo high-flow turbocharger, a larger intercooler, an upgraded radiator for additional cooling and a Motec engine management system. A bespoke Torqit three-inch exhaust system is fitted from the turbo backwards, while the manifold is retained from the standard L200. Producing 344hp and 677Nm of torque, the Mitsubishi L200 SuperUte can reach 62 mph from a standstill in under 3.5 seconds and a top speed in excess of 150mph. The front suspension is upgraded with Supashock springs and absorbers. The rear end is completely
modified: The standard rear differential and rear leaf spring suspension are removed and replaced with a SuperUtes control package, complete with a competition-spec differential and a fully adjustable horizontal Supashock racing damper set up. The standard gearbox is replaced with a Tremac 6060 6-speed ‘H-Gate’ manual shift gearbox with set ratios along with a specially fabricated heavyduty lightweight clutch and flywheel from Australian Clutch. All vehicles have 20-inch PDW special ‘SuperUtes’ Series alloy wheels and Yokohama R-spec 20-inch tyres. Other controlled elements include a Tilton pedal box and a Brembo brake system. All vehicles are fitted with a bespoke CAMS-approved
(Confederation of Australian Motorsport Ltd) roll cage along with FIA-mandated safety harness, window net and other driver protection. The vehicle weight is also controlled and set at 1800kg to ensure parity across the manufacturers entered for the series. Craig Dontas, Mitsubishi Motors Team Triton Racing, said: “The L200 SuperUte is a great racing truck to drive; it’s quick, responsive and handles really well. The ECB SuperUtes Series is a highly competitive and closely fought series of races with the trucks locked in a close battle for position. With the new race tyres, lower ride heights, louder exhausts and more performance for this year, the series should be better than ever.”
Rav ramps up on electronics TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AFTER THE INTRODUCTION OF THE FIRST GAME-CHANGING RAV4, THE FIFTH GENERATION ARRIVES BRISTLING WITH SMART TECHNOLOGIES AND A HYBRID MOTOR OPTION
T
he all-new car goes on sale this month with advanced safety package across the eight-variant range when. “Advanced safety technology should not only be available on the top grades,” says Toyota New Zealand’s general manager of product and new vehicle sales, Neeraj Lala. As part of its Toyota Safety Sense suite, every variant will have dynamic radar cruise control, a pre-collision system with autonomous emergency braking including pedestrian detection and daylight cyclist detection, road sign assist, lane tracing assist and automatic high beam. Other advanced safety technologies including blindspot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, reversing camera, front and rear parking sensors and seven
airbags. For the first time in New Zealand, Toyota will offer a self-charging hybrid-electric RAV4, available in three grades which mates a 155kW 2.5-litre petrolelectric powertrain to an electronically-controlled continuously variable transmission (E-CVT). Toyota expects to offer an electrified option on all of its vehicle ranges by 2025. The company introduced the first mass-production petrol-electric hybrid vehicle, the Prius, 22 years ago. The 2019 Rav4 hybrid distributes more driving force to the rear wheels through its newly developed E-four system, which helps suppress front wheel slip when starting off hard. The E-four system also helps reduce understeer during cornering. Off- road, the increased rear-wheel torque should also improve hill-climbing performance, even
on rough terrain. The new Rav4 can also coach drivers toward better fuel economy. An accelerator guide function suggests an acceleration amount to the driver according to the driving conditions, and a scoring function adds a measure of fun to eco driving. Driving enthusiasts will appreciate the four driving modes; EV in the hybrid, normal, eco and sport, with the latter enhancing the car’s acceleration. A new 2.5-litre, four-cylinder engine providing 152kW maximum power and 243Nm of maximum torque features in the AWD petrol variants combined with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The urban-oriented front-wheel-drive 127kW/203Nm entry level version is powered by a new 2.0-litre petrol engine and direct shift CVT combination in GX, GXL and Limited grades. The top of the line Adventure AWD model is powered by the new 2.5-litre petrol engine and uses a Toyota first Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD system. This new 2.5-litre engine is also available in a non-hybrid GXL model. “All-wheel drive may have become a ubiquitous term in the automotive industry, especially among SUVs, but not all AWD systems are the same,” says Mr Lala. The new all-wheel drive system will send up to 50 per cent of the torque to the rear axle and the differential can then send it in varying amounts to the individual wheels.

Great Wall unveils next generation ute GREAT WALL MOTOR UNVEILED NOT ONE BUT THREE NEW DUAL-CAB UTES AT THE AUTO SHANGHAI MOTOR SHOW IN APRIL
T
he new ute has been confirmed for Australia and New Zealand, but possibly not until next year. It will join the Haval SUV range to spearhead Great Wall Motor’s global expansion strategy. The next generation ute has been developed on a new platform to be shared with the Haval H9. It is packed with high-end technologies — autonomous emergency braking, active cruise control, 360-degree camera, independent double wishbone front suspension and a multi-link coil-spring rear suspension, rear disc brakes — but it is likely to undercut rivals’ pricing by a significant margin. Commercial and EV versions will use leaf-sprung live rear axles. Yes, an EV version. Its wheelbase is

much longer than the off-road model at 3470mm and the tray is a massive 1760mm long. Great Wall ute is also planning a hydrogen fuel-cell version, although no details were given. According to overseas reports, Great Wall Motor recently invested one billion yuan on research and development of hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles to have a fleet ready for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. Conventional engine options will be the 180kW 2.0-litre petrol engine used in the Haval H9 or a 145kW 2.0-litre turbo-diesel mated to a sixspeed manual or an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission. The auto on the urban model has four driving modes: auto, economy, sport and 4-low. It also has an electric/auto park brake system. Great
Wall says it is aiming for a five-star ANCAP safety rating, a step up from the outgoing model’s sub-par two-star result. The new ute’s maximum towing capacity is expected to be 3500kg, comparable with the best in class, fuel capacity is 80 litres. The quoted payload number was 500kg, which is adrift of popular rivals in the ‘1-tonne’ category. The off-road model comes with a winch, snorkel, crawl mode, front and rear diff locks, and a ‘tank u-turn’, which sounds intriguing. To be positioned alongside an ‘urban’ variant and the EV, the Adventure ute adopts Great Wall’s new ‘tough truck’ look featuring a big black single-bar grille, LED headlights and tail-lights, black wheelarches, extended rear sports bar. The tailgate has also been designed for off-road bike enthusiasts, which might mean that it will lock down to extend the load platform. The up-market interiors are a new design direction for Great Wallwhich aims to combine the quality, refinement and comfort of premium family SUVs with the off-road and load carrying capabilities of trucks. The family-oriented urban model is designed to create an intimate driving environment with the use of monotone surrounds and contrasting jacquard texture seats and door inserts. The instrument cluster is set within a leather dashboard with contrast stitching, and the steering wheel has a compact airbag housing. The central 9” touchscreen operates voice recognition, infotainment, electronic dipstick and the climate control system. The new ute will also feature push button start, mobile phone interconnection and remote vehicle start function.

Blackfern Cooperative celebrates five years of growth QUESTION : WHAT DO CUSTOMERS SAY BEHIND YOUR BACK?
T
his elephant in the room provoked some rapid soul-searching at Blackfern Co-operative’s supplier conference held recently in Hamilton. By definition, the attendees didn’t know the answer but it got them thinking about what they could do to make sure those customers were saying good things. The question came from presenter Jerome Lamarque who spoke on brand recognition, culture, and leadership. Those terms are not usually part of a small business’s vocabulary so Jerome gave practical examples. What the customer says behind your back is your real brand, he said. A company’s
culture is everything its team does and everything it says. Room for improvement? Well, that can be changed by leaders in the business who model the behaviour that sets the culture. Blackfern co-founder Roger Castleton says most businesses would benefit from self-assessment or a survey on this question, and he invited participants to follow up with Jerome. Blackfern is celebrating five years since its formation. It has grown to nearly 700 members nationwide, including suppliers. Roger says empowering suppliers to have a say is a crucial component of a cooperative buying business. “All stakeholders bring something to the table,” he says.

Do more with fewer employees HAVING TO MAKE DO WITH A SMALLER STAFF IS FAST BECOMING A REALITY IN THE AUTO REPAIR INDUSTRY more quickly? Why would they make the extra effort to make the shop busy every day? People need a reason to put in the extra effort day in and day out.
T
he quantity of quality technicians entering the automotive has dwindled in recent years and the average age continues to increase. There are several reasons for this trend and none are easily fixed. The one thing businesses can control is taking action to do more with less by having good systems and policies in place. David Rogers, writing in Motor Age Training, says the best way to do this is to make sure your company culture makes people want to work there and that your staff members are 1) educated, 2) energized and 3) efficient! Training is something that is too easy for workshop owners to forget about or take for granted. Employees need to be on top of emerging trends and that takes a conscious effort, acquiring and learning the new technologies and sharing that knowledge with other staff to improve efficiency in your business and give you a competitive edge. There is no substitute for giving clear expectations, says David. “Proper training provides an opportunity to get everyone on the same page and working together, towards the same goal. “Training removes any confusion or blurry lines from your process.” Choosing to train should mean you will notice fewer delays and staff relating to customers, and one another, in a more confident way. “If knowledge equals power, then training is precisely what you need to fire up the engine of your shop and improve productivity no matter what your tech count might be.”

Incentivize to energize He also says a good incentive payment plan in place is an absolute must. Rewarding good work and workers who go the extra mile will encourage more improvement and optimal efficiency, regardless of a business’s size. Some owners fear that if they don’t give employees a set salary or hourly pay, they will leave for a more stable situation. The truth is, only the lowest performing would prefer that over a great opportunity that is based upon their own production and effort. “In my experience, improperly paying your employees can cause more problems for you than just about anything. Expecting a poorly incentivized team member to reach the goals of management is quite simply impossible.” He also warns to watch out for hidden disincentives. If staff get paid the same whether business is slow or flat out, what is their incentive to get the work out
Adapt or fade away David stresses modernization but this isn’t just about new workshop equipment. “Whether it be a loaner car program or an espresso machine and snacks with free WiFi and charging stations for personal devices, these are things that can set us apart from the competition and provide a quantifiable difference that customers will use and appreciate.” Another big area for modernisation lies in streamlining computer systems “So many shops today are using five to ten different computer programs to address each vehicle. They will sign the customer in on a POS program, look up diagnostic info on another, use yet another to order parts, and then possibly use another one or two programs to look up and compare labour times. Add to those a CRM program, plus another one for marketing, and you have a tangle of expensive and outdated processes.” All these passwords and hopping about is a major obstacle to improving productivity. Integrated management platform are not easy for workshops to set up themselves but it’s a fertile area for modernisation and worth a look to see how processes can be streamlined. “Staff shortages have certainly been known to cause headaches and heartburn. But if you have the right systems and the right personnel in place, being shorthanded won’t be as big of a liability as you’d think,” says David. “A workshop is like an engine, and having a well-oiled machine complete with staff that’s educated, energized and efficient is essential to keep your motor running no matter what!”

Tracking down a diesel engine killer WHEN IT COMES TO BLOWN HEADS, KIWI CYLINDER HEADS KNOWS THE HOWS AND WHYS. IN THIS FEATURE, WAYNE MCMEEKAN SETS OUT HOW TO AVOID A REPEAT MELTDOWN
C
ylinder heads only crack when they have become too hot, says Wayne. The cracking of the cylinder head is not the cause, but the end result. To return a vehicle to reliable service you need to find the cause of this excess heat, or the replacement cylinder head will probably fail within 3-12 months time... And that would lead to a difficult discussion with your customer. The poor old cylinder head will usually wear the blame for its failure. That is why Wayne, whose company Kiwi Cylinder Heads supplies replacement cylinder heads, is keen for workshops to find the real culprit, for their own and their customers’ sakes. Wayne says it will usually be one of the systems surrounding the head feeding too much heat into it. They are more prone to the contamination and build-up that cause excessive heat. When that happens, the cylinder head becomes a heat sink, sucking up excessive heat to the point where it fails, leading to an expensive repair job. There are three main systems that can be sources of excessive heat for diesel cylinder heads. Assuming the bottom end of the engine is in good working order, these are the cooling system, the fuel system and the exhaust. First up, the cooling system: • Check radiators for blockages or damage. Some vehicles have more than one radiator. They all need to be cleaned or replaced. Note that a simple flush is not that effective.
• All coolant hoses should be checked for deterioration, integrity, perishing and leaks. • Both old and new thermostats should be tested to make sure they work. • Viscous fans and electric fans should also be checked. Just because it’s spinning doesn’t mean it’s drawing the correct airflow. • If the radiator was blocked, there’s a good chance the heater core will be compromised as well. Some people-movers have complicated heating and cooling systems that can easily capture air locks. Make sure you have released any air trapped within the system. • Use the right quantities and types of antifreeze and inhibitors. Electrolysis and cavitation are extremely destructive. Fuel system: • Start first by having all diesel fuel injectors tested and serviced or replaced. Diesels are all about the correct atomization of the fuel. They will run on just about any form of oil but that doesn’t mean they are immune to damage. Poor fuel delivery will cause exhaust gas temperatures to rise considerably, and high EGTs can do damage or cause catastrophic failure. Always test, restore or replace the fuel injectors. • The injectors may test fine but if the fuel pump isn’t supplying fuel at the right pressure and volume then the injector can’t do its job as well. Most pumps have filter gauzes fitted. Check they are not
24
Auto Channel Issue #13 May 2019
obstructed with debris and particulates. • Check the fuel filter housing for cracks. A crack will let air into the fuel line causing cavitation within the pump. • Remote fuel storage tanks found commonly on construction, quarry sites and farms can be a great source of the dreaded fuel bug, and foreign particulates. Filters are designed to trap this material but most factory diesel fuel filters are by-pass filters. That means if a filter gets blocked with gunge, unfiltered fuel will be fed around it to the rest of the fuel system components. That can lead to damaged pump internals and fuel injector nozzles. • Common rail diesels atomize fuel finer than ever. Finer fuel atomization gives more complete combustion which gives more power. Some of these engines can generate up to 30,000psi at the injector nozzle. Those high pressures create high temperatures in the fuel returning to the fuel tank. This can create condensation, contaminating the fuel with water. Water cannot be compressed, so any water reaching injectors at those pressures can, and will, damage them. • Cracked and melted pistons, cracked cylinder heads, failed head gaskets can all result from improper fuel delivery. Exhaust system: • Make sure the turbo is not over-boosting due to blocked MAP sensors or stuck waste gates. MAP sensors detect turbo boost and send a signal to
the ECU, which then controls the amount of boost the turbo provides. If it is blocked with gunk, the sensor detects no or low pressure and dials up the turbo. Fun, maybe, but not good for the engine’s long-term health. Couple with this a possible faulty injector or two and the result will be a very high EGT. The exhaust gas recirculation valve or EGR can also be blocked and jammed with ‘EGR gunk’, a mixture of carbon and oil mist. The EGR system recycles some of the exhaust gases back to the inlet manifold to reduce NOx gas emissions. These are created at around 2400 degrees Celsius. Adding a quantity of spent gas from the exhaust, which won't burn again, reduces the combustion temperature. As a faulty EGR valve or system can cause more pollution, and reduce engine performance, a common fix is to block the EGR system off with a blanking plate. But this will increase EGTs as it is cutting out the mechanism designed to lower combustion temperatures. • EGR coolers are fitted to most common rail or direct injection engines. They are small radiators situated inside the EGR pipes running between the exhaust and the intake manifolds. They cool the exhaust gases traveling to the intake using coolant from the cooling system. Sometimes the cooler cracks allowing coolant to be sucked out of the
cooling system, ultimately leading to overheating. These should always be pressure tested, regardless of the age of the EGR cooler. One of the leading causes of EGR cooler failure is our old friend, high EGT. A high EGT can boil the coolant in the cooler causing it to swell and crack. • A blocked or collapsing muffler will cause excessive back pressure. If an engine cannot expel its hot exhaust gases they will back up and cause failure of the turbo and or cylinder head. Bent or damaged exhaust pipe? Same result. • Just as the name suggests, diesel particulate filters (DPFs) filter particulates from the exhaust gases that are bad for us air-breathing animals. DPF filters are cleaned when necessary by the engine’s ECU either increasing fuel delivery or directly injecting fuel into the catalyst to burn off build-up. This is only meant to happen within certain parameters, such as road speed. That means vehicles that experience only low speed travel or frequent cold use can end up with blocked DPFs which leads to poor environmental and engine performance and high EGTs. If you have a cylinder head failure, you owe it to yourself and your customer to find the root cause of excessive heat, says Wayne.

FAVOURITE TOOLS A wobble extension A simple bit of kit but ever since they have come onto the market they have offered just enough of an angle to make made removing the nuts holding a sometimes hot exhaust manifold on so much easier. Line boring kit The first tool Vagn pointed us to sat in a sturdy old wooden box. It was a line boring kit which would cut oversize main bearing cups in flat-four crankcases. It’s usually the two centre-bearings that flog out. “It’s been a lifesaver for some people. Without this you are up for a replacement crankcase and that’s a lot, lot dearer than it needs to be,” he says. Vagn pulled out a collection of clamps and rods and braces which ensures the cutting tool lines up dead centre on all the bearing surfaces in the crankcase, to cut through them all on each pass. Half-moon spanner Same with a half-moon spanner. Qualitat engineers wouldn’t be without one when it comes to removing an air-cooled VWs’ carbs.

Torque multiplier There’s a big gland nut on the air-cooled engine’s flywheel. To get that off or on could involve getting three people to hang off a long pipe. Or you could use the recommended torque multiplier. This clever piece of kit engages the teeth on the flywheel to, well, multiply the torque, making it a one-man job to achieve the required 220ft-lbs of torque.
Magnet Some tools just get on with the job but others make you very thankful they are around. Powerful magnets on long bendy leads fall into that category. When a nut or washer has heard the call of gravity and headed south in an engine bay the tool that lets you retrieve it without dismantling everything in the way can become your best friend.

Its main product lines are screwdrivers, torque tools, L-keys, bits, soft-faced hammers, pliers, measuring tools and articulated hoses. Functionality and sturdiness were once the most important criteria for tools. But now the German manufacturer is now carving an additional reputation as an innovator by factoring in how efficiency and ergonomics can yield significant advantages. It regularly scores design prizes, including Red Dot and iF Design Awards. Wiha’s SpeedE is a good example. It won a gold award at the German Design Award as well as the Focus Open Special Mention 2018 award and the Eisen Award 2018 during the Cologne International Hardware Fair in March 2018. Its electric motor fastens screws up to twice as fast as other drivers but, from just 0.4 Nm, it will disengage to prevent damage to sensitive screw heads and threads. The user can then finish fixing the screw by hand, just as with a conventional screwdriver. An innovative electric ratchet function assists users as they complete fastening. This unique 3-step process enables SpeedE users to work faster and more efficiently with a natural action. The manufacturers calculate the SpeedE gets things done at least twice as fast. When fully charged, SpeedE can fasten electrically up to 800 times. It

The Road to 400mph — Part Two WE CONTINUE TO FOLLOW THE BUILD OF COOK MOTOR RACING’S 1000HP-PLUS SR20 TURBO POWER PLANT IN THE LEAD-UP TO THE TEAM’S 2019 BONNEVILLE ASSAULT WHERE THEY HOPE TO CRACK 400MPH AND THE TWO-LITRE GAS RECORD
W
e began following the 1000-plus horsepower pump gas SR20DET engine build for Cook Motor Racing (CMR) in Auto Channel issue 12. Since then, the couriers mentioned in that article have been running red hot. The team is now in possession of a pair of billet SR20 blocks out of Australia — Reg did not have time to machine any locally as was done previously done with CMR’s Synergy-powered record attempts. The team is planning to build four complete SRs for the assault: two mule engines using factory SR blocks and some lower cost, off-the-shelf components, and then two complete race engines using the billet blocks, cranks, and all the high-end components — the kind of stuff that is yet to be finalized, or is simply too expensive to risk during this test phase. The mule engines will see some serious dyno time, as Reg explains: “We did 427 runs with the Synergy V8 — that’s the level of detail that will go into the tuning. I would be expecting to get to 120 runs before we’re finished with the SR and we have to do that. Do I want to? No; I’d rather just go and buy stuff, but we can’t.” However, before the team can hit the throttle on the SuperFlow Engine dyno, some engines need to be completed. The billet block Engineered by Bullet Race Engineering in Australia, and proven in such cars as the WTAC-winning Hammerhead S13 of MCA, the two billet blocks are machined from 6061 aircraft grade alloy. The blocks are what is known as dry deck, and do not have any passages to pass water from the block to the head. Reg explains why: “Clamping the head to the block is very difficult. If the head lifts and any gases escape, [they] would get into the cooling system and push out the coolant.” Cooling the four cylinders is achieved by two machined galleries sitting each side of the cylinders. These are capped with billet plates with both an inlet and an outlet. No water passes from one side of the block to the other, resulting in more strength supporting the sleeves as there [are] only four oil passengers; apart from that, it’s solid 6061 surrounding them.” A total of three kilograms heavier than the factory block, it’s weight well spent. The deck thickness is greatly improved, as is overall rigidity. The other great improvement is that the block is two-piece with integrated four-bolt main caps using 7/16th ARP studs, which will hold the bolt square — a known weaker point in big-power factory-blocked SRs. While the two billet blocks arrived at CMR basically ready to go, the final bearing clearances are still to be settled on, so further machining might be required. “Everyone is telling me that, while billet blocks are
32
Auto Channel Issue #13 May 2019
strong, because of the mass of alloy they expand a lot, so we’re going to start with the tightest clearances we can get away with,” says Reg. “The crank will pretty much be touching the bearings when cold. We’re hoping to open up all the oil galleries so the oil has good flow when cold, and will be able to keep up once it’s hot. For the main bearing clearances, we are going to start off between 0.5 and 0.9 thou when it’s cold as both the block and bearings will grow. People talk about putting blocks in an oven to check the clearance, but we’d need a big oven and it would take a long time to get this engine to 100 degrees — but it would be a worthwhile exercise as people would be surprised at just how much the block will grow.” We’ll have more on finalizing the bearing clearances next issue. Sealing the head One of the biggest challenges will be keeping the head clamped once the boost is ramped up. While the exact boost pressure is yet to be sorted, it’s a 1200hp SR on 98-octane fuel so, yeah, it’s going to require some serious pressure inside the combustion chamber. To hold the factory cast head down, ½-inch ARP aged 625 studs are being used. These are the latest from ARP, and are so strong they will pull straight through the head. As Reg explains, “We will torque down to between 80 and 100 foot pounds. People talk about going to 120, and, while the bolt is capable of that, the
factory head is not. To achieve that, you’d need a billet head. When the engine is cold, it’s got rigidity, but as soon as it’s hot, if clamped to 120 it will start deforming the bolt holes and the head will mould around them.” To put those figures into perspective, the factory torque setting is 30 and then go another 90-degree turn. The head gasket itself is of copper construction, and its only job will be to seal the oil passengers passing from the block to the head. Sealing each cylinder is done by Bullet Race Engineering fire rings. These are a phosphor bronze compression ring that sits inside the head gasket and cuts into the sleeve when clamped down. Inside the head Using factory castings as the basis, the team is currently finalizing the details of the heads specs. We were able to check out one of the mule engine heads, which gave us a good indication of just how modified the final products will be. Ported and polished by Mark Bradley when he was working at CMR, the ports are huge, and the combustion chambers have been reshaped to mould the face of
the valve into the head for better flow. For the mule engine, Supertech 1mm oversized inlet valves and 2mm oversized exhaust will be used. Reg tells us that he is not a fan of running 2mm oversized intake valves, as the increase in performance doesn’t outweigh the extra cost of machining and reduced reliability due to the need to retrofit larger valve seats. In the record-attempt heads, the factory seats will be reshaped to suit. The valves will be 1mm oversized Ferrea Comp Plus valves for the inlet and inconel for the exhaust with copper/bronze valve guides. The valve springs to be used are yet to be finalized, although Reg is leaning towards Beehive as used in his NA record-setting NA SR20 in 2011. These allow for a weaker seat pressure than dual springs. It’s all part of the theory to stress the factory alloy as little as possible in the hopes it will survive long periods of time at high rpm and boost, and the extreme temperatures this will lead to. The fear here is that if the springs are too strong, they will deform, shift, or simply pull the valve seat through what little alloy is holding it in place. We touched on the custom roller rockers to be used last issue; these are customized P11 rollers welded to a new housing which deletes the secondary arms. They are a trick little invention that allows for some serious lift and duration to be employed. The exact final profile will be settled on once this first mile engine hits the dyno late this month. Another decision that will be finalized on dyno early on will be whether CMR runs variable inlet cam gear as seen on Hans Ruiterman’s big power SR S14. “We are going to test that by tuning the engine and then do a power run from say 1000 to 5000rpm and see what it makes. Then, we are going to advance the inlet pulley one complete tooth and do another power run. If it’s a big advantage, we will modify the head to use variable timing pulley. Some tuners swear by it and others say it’s a waste of time, but we will see. We need to know as we need to be making boost as soon as possible,” Reg explains. Reg plans to go to Australia to visit Collin Willshire of Jett Racing. Collin is the man behind the world’s fastest four-cylinder. The pair will cover off many aspects of the build yet to be decided on, including compound turbocharging. Keep an eye out for the next issue to find out more.

Emco handles the liquid middle ground BEHIND THE SCENES, BETWEEN BULK TANKER SUPPLY OF AUTOMOTIVE LUBRICANTS AND CONSUMER PACKAGING THERE’S A LARGE UNSEEN MIDDLE GROUND
B
usinesses dealing in commercial quantities of automotive lubricants don’t want to be messing about with plastic bottles. Import/distribution business Emco caters to that market, supplying and installing a wide range of commercial and industrial storage, distribution and dispensing equipment for oils, coolants and grease. Emco’s products include pneumatic oil pumps, powder-coated carbon steel retractable hose reels for oils, air and water; digital, standard or pre-set oil delivery handpieces, waste oil receivers, mobile equipment for all drum sizes and more. Emco’s installation division covers the country setting up lubrication dispensing systems for many car and truck dealerships dispensing many brands of oil and grease. Emco also supplies latest industry-
approved double skinned storage tanks and carbon or stainless steel piping systems which deliver clean, contamination-free product. “What we are seeing in the market today is a move away from low cost, cheap applications to just get by, towards equipment that will last for more than just a couple of years before it requires replacement,” says Emco’s James Driscoll. The high value of oils makes it important that every drop of oil is accounted for. This can be managed by automatic billing integrated via WiFi from the dispensing points in the workshop. The same system can also automate reordering based on storage levels. “Our product range consists of sound, high quality brands which gives us faith in the ability of our equipment,” James says. “We take pride in not just
the aesthetics of the product but also its ongoing durability and commercial fitness for purpose.” James says Emco’s highly qualified and experienced team of engineers have a deep understanding of the industry. They provide expert technical advice, assist to help problem-solve on equipment issues, and, design workshop installations fit for purpose. “Having such a great team allows Emco to develop and design the best outcome for specific business requirements, from small garages to large commercial operations. “We give our customer great service because we know and understand our products’ entire life cycle from manufacturing through end user operations to ongoing maintenance and upgrades.” For more information on products or installation, call Emco on 07 850 5240.

K
umho Tyre is supplying its 245/50R19 105W Crugen HP91 for fitment on the BMW X3 four-door hatchback SUV. Kumho says it was selected on the basis of its resistance to hydroplaning and excellent driving stability at high speeds. BMW has sold more than 1.6 million X3 mid-size SUVs worldwide since launch in 2003. The Kumho Crugen HP91 features a newly developed compound while its tread design maximises steering stability by reinforcing rigidity. The HP91 also features four wide circumferential grooves for performance on wet surfaces and for all-season traction and control. BMW started production of the new X3 at its Spartanburg factory in Alabama in June 2018. The tyres are being supplied from Kumho's Gwangju manufactured plant in Korea.

itself, while the other one was painted up and adapted to look and perform like a rev counter. “This took a lot of tinkering,” Tim explains proudly. Once the cab and chassis were completed, it was time for the two to be reunited and made to work in unison. Wiring up a vehicle is never easy, and when you are dealing with something completely custom it is often best left to a professional. Tim approached good friend Huw at Feilding Auto Electrical and asked if he would be keen to tackle the project. “We can bring the truck in here and you can be the apprentice,” was Huw’s reply. Tim grabbed his side cutters and soldering iron and set to work again. Over the next few weeks the mass of wires started resembling a proper loom. Normally a basic wiring job such as this wouldn’t take that much time, but with regular “What have you got there?” and “What the hell is that? [punter points at motor]” breaks every time someone walked through the door, the timeframe went out a little longer than normal. Finally, the big day: it was time to turn the key for the first time and to see which bit of the wiring smoke would come out of. The key was turned, the Arcus Performance rechipped engine roared into life for a brief second, then stopped. Apparently fuel injected engines don’t run for too long when you attach the feed and return lines the wrong way round. With everything finished it was time to get the paperwork in order so that the reborn Morris truck could start earning its keep hauling race cars. The last of the headaches for Tim and the family to overcome were uncovered when the truck was put through its road and brake tests. The reshoed drum brakes performed a little too well. When the vehicle was loaded with two and a half tons of ballast on the back, the stopping distances were well within the realms of acceptability but, when empty, the big Morris erupted in tyre smoke from locked rears as soon as Tim touched the brakes! A bit of fiddling with brake and tyre pressures soon solved this and the truck received its braking tick of approval. The journey from apples to race cars wasn’t straightforward but, stepping back and admiring the work that produced the perfect partner for the exotic machinery it was designed to haul, the builder and casual observer agree it’s been well worth it. Those with a keen eye and an urge to quibble might say the rear ramp could have been built with a less aggressive angle. Tim answers with a wry smile, “That’s for stage two … the supercharger”.
Wanted: Thrillseekers for dream drive USA LIVE THE DREAM: DRIVE A NASCAR, A DRAGSTER, AND A MUSTANG IN THE USA
I
f you ever wanted to dive deep into America’s car culture, talk to Beach Hop frontman Noddy Watts first. He really knows his way around out there, and if anyone knows what makes a good time for car people, it’s Noddy. After spending the summer setting up Whangamata’s famous Beach Hop, Noddy and partner Andrea unwind by unleashing some Detroit muscle in America’s wild west. They have now taken 21 tours Stateside and are heading into their tenth year, making them the most experienced Kiwi-based USA tour guides. They have put more than 700 people behind the wheel on selfdrive trips. They now have five different tours on their books based on a fully escorted self-driving tour with accommodation, vehicle hire, insurance, a programmed GPS unit, a USA cell phone and some spectacular roads and iconic events. Mustang convertibles are the usual choice but Camaros are an option. “You can downgrade to a Camaro if you must,” says Noddy.

New this year is the Thrillseeker tour which includes driving a big block Chev dragster with Frank Hawley’s drag racing school, a Nascar drive, go-karting, zip-lining, and a visit to a shooting range. Noddy has done the Nascar drive before and he’s looking forward to his first dragster drive, but probably not as much as Andrea. “She kicks my butt every time,” Noddy says. Settle the adrenaline back down a bit with a winery tour, Las Vegas shopping, a visit to Palm Springs, and stays at quality hotels and resorts. The thrills will keep coming for 21 days between 13 October and 3 November 2019. Also new this year is a reunion tour for people who took a ‘once in a lifetime’ Route 66 tour with Noddy — and now want to do it again. The next trip will feature Route 66 again but it takes a different loop back to LA, taking in new events. The next available Route 66 tour is happening May– June 2020. This 28-day tour doesn’t just take in the USA's ‘Mother Road’, it covers 6000 miles from LA to Chicago and back.
Other options next year include The Cars and Blues tour, a 34-day Mustang Convertible tour starting and finishing in Miami, looping up the east coast of the USA through New York to Niagara Falls. Take in Detroit and Chicago, returning along Highway 61 — which is also known as the Blues Highway — to New Orleans and on to Miami. Next departure is in July–August 2020. Spaces are also available on the spectacular West Coaster is in August–September 2020. Drive the West Coast of the USA from Seattle to San Diego and you’ll visit the Grand Canyon, and take in the Colorado Rockies and Yellowstone National Park. No matter which tour you take Noddy offers a confident prediction. “I send people home a different person, with a different perception of the USA.” Pricing is dependent on tour, so contact the team via email for further information, on info@kiwisontour. com, or check out Kiwis On Route 66, Cars and Blues, or The West Coaster pages on Facebook. As Noddy says: “Jobs fill your pockets. Adventures fill your soul.”

You’d never know that Clive Walker purchased his 1967 Impala as an insurance write-off, after it sustained serious fire damage. Now completely repaired, repainted, and repowered, it’s the perfect family cruiser for Clive, wife Summer, and one-year-old daughter Franki. Classic Auto Body was responsible for the gloss black paintwork, while Pro-Street Performance helped give the VY SS Commodore– sourced LS1 engine a few more ponies. An unexpected result of the added horsepower was a broken driveshaft, which damaged the floor of the vehicle, the required repairs being completed only three weeks before the event

If there was a car that got more adoration from kids than any other, it had to be Andy Smith’s ’64 Chev Malibu. When Andy first bought the car three years ago, he wasn’t quite sure what theme he’d go with — until he found a Hot Wheels version. From then on, the goal was to turn the Hot Wheels car into real life. The car features a few unique touches to make people scratch their heads, such as fake beadlocks and wheels that appear to have 10 studs. Under the hood is an LSX454 topped with a 950cfm carb. Although the car was still being run in at the event, Andy’s already thinking of adding forced induction to it.
Looking at it, you’d be hard-pressed to tell that Dave and Carol Rose’s ’32 coupe has been on the road since 2011. The car still looks as if it’s just rolled out of the paint shop, despite having clocked up more than 13,000 miles all around the country. Many of those miles can be attributed to a trip with the Marineland Street Rod and Kustom Klub down to Rangiora, with the couple continuing on to Bluff. The car was the last body to come out of Pete Osborne Productions in Hawke’s Bay before the business burnt to the ground and runs a 351 Windsor up front. Despite having a few other cars, Dave and Carol have had this one at four Beach Hops Left: The engine in Jeremy Hughan’s Escort wagon had a few people scratching their heads. No, it’s not a BDA — although it sure looks like one at first glance. In fact, it’s a two-litre Zetec Ford Focus motor fitted with quad throttle bodies. Jeremy built the car with his dad, Paul, over the past two-and-a-half years, and, apart from an appearance at the Hamilton All Ford Day, this was its debut. It’s come a long way from the stock 1600 that it was when purchased, with many parts for it having been sourced from the UK. A Sierra five-speed and 3.54:1 diff support the great engine package
