It’s your last chance to enter a couple of great competitions this month. Firstly our own. Take a few seconds now to jump on our website — autochannel.co.nz — type in your email address and you will go in the draw to win a handy and hi-tech BOC welder. This has got to be the best odds of winning a major prize you will see this year. You can score a bigger V8-sized prize — one of two actual V8 engines — this month only with Holden parts, but you are up against a bigger pool of entrants there. It’s open to Aussies too. Mind you, Vern Pilott from Kawerau has already won a great prize in this promotion. There are more moves in the industry as two of the biggest Australian car dealer groups merge, which has a knock-on effect here, and another distributor is launching into the workshop equipment space, with Rotary and Summit hoists and other equipment. Meanwhile, well-known local suppliers are also growing their businesses, adding other big name component suppliers to their inventories. If you fancy a move yourself, we have situations vacant, some new products to consider and for some idle time during smoko why not transport yourself to Bonneville as we continue the fascinating story of the road to 400mph.

Hey, thanks New Zealand automotive industry!
Auto Channel was welcomed onto the scene when our first issue was distributed in April 2018. The feedback was immediate: it was embraced and discussed nationwide over the smoko table. So it seems that the research we did prior to launch paid off, with the blend of locally produced content that’s relevant to the New Zealand industry, plus some amazing automotive vehicle restorations and up-to-date event coverage, being a refreshing change to the cut-and-paste-off-the-internet approach you’d been fed for the past few decades. Now well into our second year of publication, we are proud to be the highest-circulating automotive industry publication in the country. But don't worry, being number one makes us motivated to deliver the best product we can, so if you have any feedback please do get in touch, after all, we're the voice for you... The team at Auto Channel

Winter: it’s battery season again. Or is it? DESPITE ADVANCES IN BATTERY TECHNOLOGY THE LIFETIME CAR BATTERY HAS YET TO BE INVENTED
Nankang tyres celebrates 60 years NANKANG IS ONE OF THE PIONEERING TAIWANESE TYRE MANUFACTURERS
I
W
hile battery technology has improved, the stresses on batteries have also ramped up. Engine bays are now crowded, and have less cooling airflow, and high output alternators and stop-start engines also place higher demands on batteries. Lance Johnston of Acme Batteries, distributors of Koba batteries, says heat from external sources or even internal resistance created by battery discharges stresses the plates. The resulting agitation causes batteries’ internal plates to shed active material. And, as that material is attracted to the plates with the opposite polarity, they fly across the cell and stick fast with a powerful covalent bond. This process, known as “cell reversal” is the cause
of death of most batteries. “The affected plate areas are progressively neutralised, reducing the storage capacity of the battery.” So is winter still battery season? “Yeah, nah,” says Lance. The extra demand of cold days will find out a weak battery but, says Lance, testing the battery in your customer’s vehicle in your workshop is an “all year round opportunity”. You get the business and your customers avoid the grief of being stuck with a dead battery and a call-out. Koba Batteries are foundation suppliers to Blackfern Co-operative. Chat to Lance about the advantages of Koba batteries, make a purchase this month and you will go in the draw for 10,000 reward points celebrating Blackfern’s first five years. For more information see blackfern.coop on the net.
t takes its name from the location of its original factory in the Nakang district of Taipei, which is still in operation today. The Nankang Rubber Tire Corporation was founded by a group of engineers in 1940. It was incorporated in 1959, making this year the company’s official diamond jubilee year. It produced tyres for all types of vehicles including military and aircraft but now makes 99 per cent of its revenue from the automobile industry. As is essential for sustainable success in the demanding auto industry Nankang has committed to and invested in research and development. Their corporate motto of ‘integrity, pragmatism and innovation’ has guided them for 60 years. Since 1997 Nankang tyres have been distributed in New Zealand by YHI — it was one of YHI’s first brands. Nankang offers more than 20 models of tyre covering the New Zealand vehicle fleet and offers a 12-month or 12,000 km road hazard warranty against damage to new tyres sold through YHI, and a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects. For more information about Nankang tyres, see yhiautomotive.co.nz.

Mount Shop now selling wheel bearings and hubs
MOUNT SHOP HAS CHOSEN NOT TO REINVENT THE WHEEL AND DECIDED TO PARTNER WITH ABD — AUCKLAND BEARING DISTRIBUTORS — TO ADD BEARINGS AND HUBS TO ITS UNDERCAR INVENTORY This approach is in line with one of Hemi’s favourite quotes: “the bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.” The decision also means Mount Shop adds 1600 part numbers to its product offering in a single move. It will carry fast-moving parts in its branches and supply more specialist parts from ABD stores. Mount Shop’s staff are relied on for their experience and good service and an important part of the deal was being able to draw on ABD’s expertise to maintain that service promise across the new product line. Hemi says this move into wheel bearings and hubs was something customers had been looking for. “Customers can now sort out their under car requirements with one phone call to Mount Shop.” Mount Shop has eight locations, in Christchurch,

Bendix takes its brake poster to the next level WHAT COULD BE BETTER THAN A DETAILED 2D POSTER OF A BRAKE SYSTEM? A 3D VIEW OF A BRAKE SYSTEM
B
endix launched a detailed 2D training poster highlighting the key components in a braking system in February. Now they have taken it to the next level.
The Bendix website now shows a full 3D version of the Bendix brake system guide that gives the viewer a 360º view of the whole system. It’s interactive. Twelve components can be activated at the click of a button to rotate them and provide a complete view of each component and its role in the braking system. The components highlighted include rear caliper, rear hub assembly, rear park brake, handbrake, rear disc rotor, pedal and master cylinder, front hub assembly, front disc rotor, front brake pad, front caliper, ABS sensor and ABS module, complete with an explanation of each component and how it works. As with the poster, the 3D version uses high resolution photography to great effect, creating a valuable training tool for industry schools and, for the trade, allowing mechanics to show customers where some service work may be required. To see the Bendix Brake System Guide visit bendix.com. au and go to ‘How your Brake System Works’.

Mount Shop first among equals MOUNT SHOP LED THE WAY SHOWING THE BLACKFERN CO-OPERATIVE WORKS FOR SUPPLIERS AS WELL AS BUYERS
I
n late 2014 Blackfern faced a dilemma. The co-operative had 14 members looking to leverage their buying power — but they had no suppliers. Co-founding director of Blackfern Roger Castelton compiled a list of potential suppliers and Mount Shop was at the top of the list. Roger admits to being nervous about making the approach. “Without a supplier, we had in effect placed the cart before the horse,” he said. Happily Hemi Toia’s response was an unequivocal “Yep, we’ll give it a crack.” Roger says Hemi’s lead helped persuade other suppliers to come on board. Hemi is just as positive today about membership of Blackfern. “It’s Kiwi-owned, it’s brought us new customers through Blackfern’s customer base and we get more exposure for Mount Shop through
the reps on the road,” says Hemi. “It’s not all about the money with Blackfern. They are good guys to deal with, and Blackfern’s advice and support for its members helps create stable and long term customer relationships.” Roger paid tribute to Hemi and the Mount Shop team’s behind-the-scenes contribution to the growth of Blackfern. He is also pleased to see Mount Shop’s move into suspension products and their online catalogue which opens up more purchasing options for members. To celebrate Blackfern’s fifth year of operation, any members that increases their spend through the Mount Shop in June will go in the draw for 10,000 reward points. “And those reward points never expire,” Roger says. For more information, see blackfern.coop.
Midget car team ramps up success TEAM BSL RACING HAD ONE OF ITS MOST SUCCESSFUL SEASONS EVER SINCE PICKING UP SPONSORSHIP FROM LUCAS OILS. COINCIDENCE?
T
he world-renowned Auckland-based Midget racing team took podium places this season at Western Springs, Palmerston North and Waikato’s Kihikihi
Speedway. Team principal Glenn Martin says young drivers Hayden Williams, Hayden Guptill, Kenny Roberts, Jaden Worthington and the up and coming Travis Buckley have helped make the past season one of its most successful ever. “Everything is really gelling at the moment, and we have got a very exciting season ahead of us,” says Glenn. He is pleased to be delivering results for sponsors, including Lucas Oil New Zealand. Their logo is on all five of the team’s cars, which race in multiple divisions, and Travis Buckley’s #7 car is painted in full Lucas Oil livery.
Glenn says the team operates as a family with everyone pulling together, with one exception. “We have never had an argument about anything at the track, or at the team shop.” So was it a coincidence the wins went up after Lucas joined as a sponsor this season? No coincidence, says Glenn. “Our partners are a big part of winning,” he says. Rolf Wilson, general manager of Lucas Oils importer Logan Distribution, says success in motorsport has been key to Lucas Oils success, so he feels “real pride and pleasure” when a sponsored team wins. “I’m pleased to be a part of the Team BSL family,” says Rolf. Will advanced driver aids (ADAS) mean less business for workshops? WHAT DOES ADAS MEAN FOR THE FUTURE, IF CARS GET BETTER AT AVOIDING TROUBLE?
T
he addition of safety systems designed to lessen the impact of car collisions, or even avoid them altogether, has got some people thinking the only impact will be on the industry. Over the next five years, do you think the total revenue of the ‘collision industry’ will grow, shrink or stay about the same? Indications are that it will continue to grow. More than half of all vehicles sold this year will have some form of ADAS. While this might suggest a shrinking pool of work, the reality is that today’s vehicles are more expensive to repair and that the cost of sensors, cameras, computer modules and other ADAS components leads to higher repair costs. Some research shows current generation vehicle repair costs are up 19 percent from the prior generation. As ADAS becomes more complex, so do the associated repair procedures, which now includes scanning and calibration. Honda’s 2018 OEM repair procedures for vehicles equipped with its MultiFunction Camera System call not just for pre- and post-scans but also for recalibration of the camera system “if vehicle is involved in a collision. That is any collision, not just those severe enough to damage the cameras or deploy airbags. With the growing need for scanning and recalibration, it likely makes sense for repairers to
look to take this work in-house with their own tools and technicians. A study published by the Equipment & Tools Institute found that the majority of the value of vehicles by model year 2020 will be in software and electronics. While there will be sheet metal, headlamps and bumpers to repair for years to come, it is clear that electronic repairs and recalibrations are going to make up a substantial portion of the repair costs of ADAS-equipped vehicles. In an impending lateral collision at more than 25 km/h, the suspension actuators of the optional Audi AI active suspension raise the body on the side exposed to the danger by up to 80 millimeters within half a second. The other vehicle therefore hits the car in an even more impact-resistant zone. Depending on the selected options, the zFAS receives the data to do this from up to five radar sensors, six cameras, 12 ultrasound sensors and the laser scanner. All of this is just for side impacts, which are less complex than forward facing self-driving capabilities. If you envision a Monday morning three or four years from now, a workshop checking in one of these Audis, maybe followed by a Tesla, will need substantial training, tools and equipment for handling the electronic and software portions of the repair. Accident frequency as measured by collisions per
million vehicle miles traveled is going to continue to decline – and to decline dramatically among vehicles with ADAS systems. However, the average repair costs for these same vehicles is going to continue to increase – nearly equally dramatically. Research by organizations such as Grand View Research and IBIS indicate that overall, the collision industry is likely to continue its pattern of steady growth. So even if collision frequency declines with ADAS advancements there will be plenty of work for repairers. There are still plenty of vehicles on the road that don’t have ADAS systems, and even ADAS equipped vehicles continue to be involved in collision events. The average repair cost is likely to continue to rise but the type of repair work will change with less focus on metal work and more on electrical and software systems.

Dealers merge to take on market challenges AUSTRALIAN CAR DEALER MERGER MAKES WAVES THIS SIDE OF THE TASMAN
T
wo of Australia’s largest car dealership ownership groups will merge to create the biggest player in this market. West Australia-based AHG (Automotive Holdings Group) has recommended its shareholders accept Queensland-based competitor AP Eagers’ offer of one AP Eagers share for every 3.6 AHG shares held. AHG owns nine car dealerships in New Zealand selling Ford, Mazda, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Hyundai and Holden brands, which will become part of the new larger group. If the merger is approved, the combined company would own 229 new-car dealership sites in Australia, 13 in New Zealand and 68 new truck and bus dealerships. The dealerships represent 33 car brands and 12 bus and truck brands. The merger will create a powerhouse in Australia’s automotive sales business but it still needs Australian Competition and Consumer Commission approval, which has 90 days to make a determination. If the deal goes through, the merged group of two of Australia’s largest automotive dealers will have a

market capitalisation of A$2.3 billion, and existing AHG shareholders would own 25.5 per cent of the new entity. While it creates the biggest player in the market it would still only command 12 per cent of the new vehicle sales market in Australia. The new car market in Australia comprises 1500 dealers in 3500 outlets and totals A$74bn in sales, employing 70,000 people. “Our proposal brings together two highly complementary businesses, with enhanced flexibility,” AP Eagers chief executive Martin Ward said. In recommending shareholders the new offer from AP Eagers after rejecting an earlier bid, AHG chairman Richard England said the deal was in the best interests of AHG shareholders and would allow shareholders to participate in AHG’s future growth. AP Eagers already owned 28.4 per cent of AHG. They have set aside funds to keep the AHG management team in place. It has previously indicated that the merged business could look at new business angles such as ride sharing and subscription services. Car dealerships in Australia
have been under pressure over the past year amid declining new vehicle sales. In 2018, sales declined in Australia for the first time in four years, according to data released by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries, which showed 1,153,111 vehicles were sold in 2018 compared to a record year of 1,189,116 sales the previous year. They have continued to decline for 12 consecutive months. In the wake of falling sales, Automotive Holdings Group slashed the value of its 105 car dealerships in Australia and New Zealand, in February announcing a write-down of $147 million on its dealership network, and a $79 million write-down on its refrigerated logistics business, prompting a steep share sell-off. In New Zealand, sales are steadier. While sales of passenger vehicles have declined (year to date) from 14,282 in 2017 to 11,015 this year, sales of SUVs climbed from 19,992 in 2017 to 21,535 in the same period this year. Overall, including commercial vehicles, sales in the year to date were 50,025 in 2017, 50,717 in 2018 and are slighter lower at 49,474 this year.

Change ATF fluids fast and fully with a Heshbon ATF flush machine THE OLD ADVICE ABOUT OIL CHANGES BEING CHEAP MAINTENANCE IS JUST AS VALID TODAY, EVEN WHEN MANUFACTURERS CLAIM THEIR AUTOMATIC BOXES HAVE ‘LIFETIME’ FLUIDS
M
odern automatic transmission fluids (ATFs) are good but they aren’t magic. Anyone who changed the oil on a high mileage automatic gearbox will have seen how much dirt that oil can be carrying. After all, there are clutch plates wearing down in there. It’s known that some gearboxes will slip or play up after a high mileage oil change. That’s because the dirt in the oil was effectively adding viscosity which made up for wear in the gearbox. Sometimes transmission oil additives can solve that slipping problem by thickening up the oil. Those additives have to be better for the remaining life of the gearbox than bits of dirt. Advising vehicle owners to change automatic transmission oil with the recommended fluids at 70,000 to 100,000 km — before the vicious circle of wear and dirt in the oil causing more wear takes hold — should make sense to those customers. Changing the ATF will extend the life of the gearbox, and cleaning up any build-up on pressure switches with appropriate flush fluids or additives can also improve gear changes and kick-down response. It can also stop or prevent leaks by revitalising seals
and O-rings. A change of fluid can also be indicated when shifting problems, fluctuating RPM, or the car not retaining the correct gear, is already evident. The most cost effective way to do that is with an oil changing machine, which can suck out the dirty oil and replace it with new, or perform a flush prior to filling with fresh oil. Respected Korean manufacturer Heshbon offers a couple of choices. The HO-211 has dual 200W pumps which keep used and new fluids separate. It has a 20 litre-oil holding tank, glass sight glasses to check on the condition of the oil, a standard cartype oil filter attachment to ensure only clean oil is pumped in, and colour coded hoses. The new Heshbon HO-250A takes control of the process to a new level. It covers a wide range of transmission maintenance and diagnostics tasks and includes a used oil temperature reading, a used oil sample function and an oil line cleaning feature. It comes with an adapter set that connects easily to the transmission itself or to cooler lines, and it automatically detects flow direction. It’s also suitable for CVT transmissions. The HO-250A also takes the oil exchange rate up to around 90 per
cent, compared with 50 per cent for a classic drain and refill, achieved by draining oil from the sump. You will still need to drop the sump to change the filter but that isn’t necessary for every fluid change as changing the oil is removing the dirt doing the damage, the dirt circulating in the oil. Volvo crowned most dependable UK CAR OWNERS VOTED VOLVO AS THE MOST DEPENDABLE PREMIUM BRAND IN THE J.D. POWER 2019 UK VEHICLE DEPENDABILITY STUDY
V
olvo owners among the 11,000 respondents gave the brand the highest ratings of any premium car maker. “Long-term reliability has a direct impact on today’s sales and tomorrow’s brand loyalty,” said Mark Lendrich, Head of Research at J.D. Power Europe. “The 2019 UK Vehicle Dependability Study premium brand award underlines that Volvo was able to satisfy the demanding group of premium customers when it comes to vehicle dependability.” Volvo Car UK managing director Jon Wakefield said: “We can have no finer judges of our achievements than the people who choose to drive our cars. Their advocacy is the perfect affirmation that our strategy
for renewing our brand is giving them the products, service and support they require. Certainly we are capturing the imagination and enthusiasm of Britain’s motorists, witnessed in the record-breaking sales momentum we have achieved so far this year.” The J.D. Power UK Vehicle Dependability Study, now in its fifth year, measures problems experienced during the past 12 months by the original owners of vehicles after 12-36 months of ownership. It examines 177 problem symptoms across eight categories. The 2019 study is based on responses from 11,530 owners of new vehicles registered between November 2015 and January 2018; it was undertaken between November 2018 and January 2019.
D-Max voted UK’s top workhorse THE ISUZU D-MAX CONTINUED ITS TRADITION OF WINNING BEST WORKHORSE PICK-UP AWARD FROM TRADE VAN DRIVER, MAKING 2018 THE SEVENTH YEAR IN A ROW THAT IT HAS WON THIS AWARD!
T
he Isuzu D-Max was praised for meeting Euro 6 standards without having to add Adblue into the exhaust to reduce NOx emissions to compliance levels, unlike
most of its competitors. It has a 3.5 tonne towing capacity, over a one-tonne payload and provides a quiet, economical driving experience. The breadth of the Isuzu D-Max range
also counted in its favour with single, extended and double-cab formats available, as well as a wide choice of trim levels and a five-year, 125,000-mile warranty package and 5 years’ roadside assistance (in the UK & Europe). The awards are judged by the magazine’s journalists and by a panel of readers who use light commercial vehicles in their businesses. Trade Van Driver group sales manager David Johns handed the award to Isuzu UK managing director William Brown. “The award for the Isuzu D-Max is a demonstration of the truck’s capability, practicality and reliability which meets the needs of customers, working hard for drivers and offering class leading durability,” said William. The D-Max was also crowned ‘Pick-Up of The Year’ at the 2019 WhatVan? Awards and in the Pick-up & 4x4 Pro Awards 2019 plus the Isuzu D-Max won best model in the 4x4 Magazine awards. This success follows on from 2018 when the Isuzu D-Max won another seven awards.

Nissan’s new Skyline offers next-gen handsfree driving in Japan NEW SYSTEM OFFERS NAVIGATED HIGHWAY DRIVING, ENABLES HANDS-OFF SINGLE-LANE DRIVING
N
issan has unveiled a world first in hands-free driving, combining navigated highway driving with handsoff single-lane driving capabilities. Designed for motorway driving, on-ramp to offramp, the new system connects with the vehicle’s navigation system to drive the car to an exit on the predefined route. The system also enables handsoff driving while cruising in a single lane. Drivers must first set their destination in the navigation system, then once the car enters the highway, the new system’s navigated driving becomes available. The new ProPILOT also enables hands-off driving
while cruising in a given lane. When the vehicle approaches a road divide, or when passing a slower vehicle is possible, the system judges the right time to branch off or pass based on information from the navigation system and 360-degree sensing. Audio and visual guidance is given to the driver, who is prompted to put both hands on the steering wheel and confirm the start of these operations with a switch. Any lane change prompts the driver to put both hands on the wheel to take control if necessary. A monitoring system in the cabin continually confirms that the driver’s attention is on the road. The vehicle uses a combination of cameras, radars,
sonars, GPS and 3D high-definition map data to provide 360-degree, real-time information of the surrounding environment. Nissan says it will provide a smooth driving experience, similar to being piloted by an experienced driver. The driver can start navigated driving by operating a switch. Once activated, the system will drive the vehicle in the centre of the lane and maintain distance from the car ahead, and within a speed set by the driver. If the car ahead is slower than the speed set by the driver and the system detects that it can pass, the driver will be notified through audio and visual guidance, and they can can agree to pass by placing both hands on the steering wheel and operating a switch. The vehicle will then move into the passing lane. Once it has passed the slower vehicle and plotted its return to the driving lane, the system will request confirmation from the driver to change lanes again. If the driver wants to overtake, he or she will place both hands on the steering wheel and activate the turn signal. The vehicle will change lanes once the system has determined that a lane change is possible. When the vehicle approaches the highway exit of a predefined route, audio and visual guidance is given to notify the driver that navigated driving is about to end. Once the vehicle reaches the highway exit ramp, navigated driving is disengaged and the driver takes full control of the vehicle. This technology is only available in Japan.
Skoda Octavia wins most dependable compact car award, again THE SKODA OCTAVIA IS CELEBRATING THE 60TH ANNIVERSARY OF ITS INTRODUCTION WITH ANOTHER J.D. POWER DEPENDABILITY STUDY AWARD
S
koda has scored back-to-back victories in the compact car class, one of the biggest categories in the J.D. Power Dependability Study. J.D. Power asked more than 11,000 original owners of vehicles about their satisfaction after 12-36 months of ownership. The study examined 177 problem symptoms across eight categories: vehicle exterior; driving experience; features, controls and displays; seats; heating, ventilation and air conditioning; vehicle interior; and engine and transmission. Unlike most other studies, the J.D. Power survey has just eight segments ranging from City Car to Large and Luxury Car meaning the Octavia triumphed over a lot of competitors for the second year in. Skoda has won 10 Auto Express Driver Power awards since 2011 and was named the Most Dependable Brand overall by J.D. Power in 2016. The current Octavia was introduced in 2016 and has won 15 industry awards over the course of the last three years, including Auto Trader New Car of the Year.

Inside electric vehicle cooling systems THE COOLING SYSTEMS OF OLDER HYBRID ELECTRIC VEHICLES ARE COMING UP SERVICING. THERE’S A LOT MORE TO THEM THAT MEETS THE EYE
C
ooling systems are complex enough in modern air con-equipped vehicles but when you add in another powertrain, as in a hybrid vehicle, the complexity
ramps up. While the electrical systems of electric vehicles are getting attention and training courses are being built around them, the cooling systems haven’t had much attention yet. Hybrid vehicles, such as the Honda Insight and Toyota Prius came onto the market in the late ’90s and early 2000s, and they were joined byplug-in hybrids early this decade. That means their cooling systems have had 10 to 20 of aging on them causing hoses to harden, coolant to degrade, plastic parts to get brittle and metal components to suffer corrosion. Many will be coming up for servicing. Industry trainer John D Kelly decided to take a closer look at three electric vehicles’ cooling systems, and wrote about it in Motor-Age Training. He looked at three different types of vehicles: hybrids, plug-in hybrids (PHEV), and electric-only vehicles (EV). They were all complex with multiple coolant loops, switching valves, one-way valves, chillers, heaters, pumps and dozens of hoses. PHEVs have the most complex systems, followed by hybrids, and then EVs. All of these cooling systems require special procedures for diagnostics, service, maintenance and repair. This article concentrates on the liquid cooling systems but some hybrid and electric vehicles also use air cooling for some of their components. Different types of hybrids There are three main types of hybrids: series, parallel and series-parallel. The Toyota Prius is a seriesparallel hybrid, which means it can use electric power or petrol or both to drive the wheels. Having both an internal combustion engine and an electric motor providing main power at different times means they must have both complex and robust
cooling systems. A series hybrid drives the wheels through the electric motor only and uses the ICE just to charges the batteries. It works well in stopt-start city driving where combustion engines are less efficient. A parallel hybrid has an electric motor assisting internal combustion, its battery charged through regenerative braking and engine power. It aims to capture benefits from both systems but gives up some efficiency. The series-parallel design plays to the strengths of both motive power systems. The Prius has 5 coolant loops as shown in Figure 1. The 2016-2019 Prius has four parallel coolant loops that are connected to the upper section of the radiator just for the ICE. This cooling system has 11 major components and 14 coolant hoses! There is a single coolant loop connected to the lower section of the radiator for the high voltage electronics and transaxle. This cooling system has 5 major parts and 6 coolant hoses. The HV battery on the Prius is air cooled/heated with a single cooling fan pulling in air from the passenger compartment and pushing it out the one-way pressure relief vents in the rear quarter panels. Plug-In Hybrid-Electric Vehicle (PHEV) Cooling Systems The PHEV John checked out was a 2018 Chevrolet Volt PHEV — not sold in New Zealand but it could still have some pointers for people servicing PHEV models sold here. It had the most complex cooling system he had ever seen in a vehicle — seven coolant loops. The incredible complexity of the Volt cooling systems was due to it having almost all the same basic components found in the Prius hybrid, plus four additional liquid cooled components. These are, one, the charging module, used when an alternating current (AC) charge cord is plugged in to charge the HV battery. It doesn’t develop heat
unless the charge cord is plugged in and, although the vehicle is usually off when charging, coolant pumps, fans, heaters, or the air-con compressor can run to maintain battery temperature during this heatgenerating process. Secondly, an accessory power module provides power for the 12V system and charges the 12V battery which can also produce excessive heat depending on demand in the 12V system increases. Thirdly, this car’s HV battery also has a dedicated coolant loop with an external coolant chiller (a minievaporator connected to the A/C system), and a 1.5 kW internal heater, coolant hoses, cooling manifolds, and cooling plates. These cooling plates have tiny coolant passages. Never use stop leak or used coolant as cooling passage restrictions can occur. Finally the cabin heater control module, which heats the cabin when the ICE off. Cabin heating uses two coolant loops. The Volt uses an HV 7.5kW

A leak test and visual inspection must be performed. Some batteries have an inspection plug to check for coolant leaks. Vacuum fill or air bleed? A vacuum fill works very well at removing the air from complex systems before pulling the coolant into the system. The Toyota service information only recommends a traditional air bleeding procedure for their PE cooling systems. Many Toyota hybrids have air bleed valves fitted but the vacuum fill method would work well on these cars too. Scan tool usage: After the vacuum fill or traditional air bleeding, an electric water pump must be activated with a scan tool to circulate the coolant and remove air bubbles. If all of the air is not removed from the inverter coolant loop of a Prius, inverter damage can occur and trigger up to 17 non-recoverable trouble codes. electric heater to heat the coolant before it is fed to the heater core. In low temperatures, the ICE can be activated to help add heat to the coolant for additional passenger comfort. EV only The third vehicle John looked at was an electric-only Chevrolet Bolt. There is no ICE to complicate things, but without waste heat from an engine on tap, EVs need a way to heat the coolant for the heater core in the passenger compartment. Most EVs have an extra coolant loop that most other vehicles do not have. The Bolt EV uses a HV 7.5 kW electric heater to heat the coolant before it is fed to the heater core to heat the air in the passenger compartment. It has three coolant loops. There is a single coolant loop connected a dedicated PE radiator for the HV electronics. This cooling system has seven major parts and 10 coolant hoses. The HV battery on the Bolt EV has an external 2.5 kW heater, external coolant chiller (a mini-evaporator connected to the A/C system), and internal cooling manifolds, cooling plates, and coolant hoses.
Note that Nissan Leafs don’t have liquid cooling or even fan-cooling for their battery packs. They use ‘passive cooling’. They are in a metal box that cooled by external air. They seem to work fine in our temperate climate. Keeping batteries in their most efficient temperature zone is a bigger issue in places with more extreme temperatures. Cooling system maintenance procedures Each vehicle manufacturer has their own coolant recommendations based upon the materials they have used and the operating conditions they were designed for. Coolants for hybrids, PHEVs, and EVs are similar to the coolants used in internal combustion engines, but note the following additional precautions and warnings: Only use new, pre-mixed 50/50 coolant for refilling the cooling system. Failure to use new coolant, the correct type of coolant, or the correct 50/50 ratio of coolant to distilled or de-ionized water can cause:
24
Auto Channel Issue #14 June 2019
• Cooling fin corrosion inside the heat generating power electronics components, leading to poor heatsink performance, overheating, and eventual premature failure. • Restriction of the passages inside the HV battery cooling/heating plates. This can lead to overheating, setting Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC), and HV system shutdown • Loss of HV isolation at a battery coolant heater element. This will set DTCs and shut down the entire HV system. Pressure testing: Pressure testing the cooling systems for leaks is permitted but keep in mind that some low temperature PE cooling system pressures are as low as 5 PSI (35kPa) — much lower than the 20 PSI (140 kPa) for the high temperature ICE cooling system. Over-pressuring a system could cause coolant leaks and possible component damage. WARNING: If the PE or HV battery coolant levels are low, the vehicle may not be safe to drive.
Hose clamps and hoses: Some original spring style hose clamps are glued in place on the hose. When attempting to remove the hose clamp, it is critical that the clamp is not rotated or repositioned so that is tears or damages the hose. You must replace the hose if the clamp needs replacing. Active shutters: Newer vehicles have active grille shutters to control airflow through the radiator and improve aerodynamics at higher vehicle speeds. A scan tool can test the function of the shutters, and for DTCs, if an overheating issue is encountered. Summary “These complex cooling systems are critical to the proper operation of these systems,” John says. “My best advice for you when working on one of these vehicles is to purchase a short-term or a long-term subscription to the factory service information and follow the exact procedures recommended by each vehicle manufacturer.”

EGR coolers are a potential weak point in modern diesel engines which can cause engine failure. The EGR, or exhaust gas recirculation system, injects a bit of spent exhaust gas into the intake manifold which helps keep exhaust temperatures within range. EGR coolers are a refinement with a heat exchanger in them but, if an engine has run hot, perhaps due to bad injectors, they can boil the coolant and crack, causing a loss of fluid and perhaps fatal overheating. High EGTs can also be caused by over boosting turbos and exhaust system failures due to blocked or restricted exhaust systems. If the real reason for failure is not identified at repair time, then the newly fitted part will often fail as well. Rola Titan Tray takes on the kiwi bush ROLA’S NEW TITAN TRAY AIMS TO BE THE MOST PRACTICAL FLAT TRAY IN THE 4X4 MARKET
R
ola has designed the Titan Tray to be the most flexible and adaptable flat tray on the market, which can be configured to take any load up to
300kg. Roof racks designed in Australia have to be tough. They have to cope with everything from carrying a couple of bikes to a complete life-support system for expeditions into the waterless wastes of the outback. Rola took that brief to heart and designed modular rack components that would also work with roof racks and accessories from most other roof rack suppliers, instead of the usual model in which accessories only work with that supplier’s proprietary system. Rola has its own accessory range but the tray’s bar slots are designed to accept most other systems’ backing plates and bolts, eyebolts or twist and lock systems. Rola’s accessories include water or jerry can or gas bottle mounts, which secure the load with fabric strap tie-downs. These are stronger and more durable than some metal clamping systems. Other accessories include holders for high-lift jacks, axes and spades, spare wheels, recovery track racks, light bar mounts and awning brackets. The Titan Tray can be converted from a low profile flat tray to a full basket tray with the addition of separate sturdy bolt-on side rails, sold in pairs for any or all of the four sides, which provide many cargo securing points. The side rails are available in four lengths — 1200, 1500, 1800 and 2000mm creating a range of different fitting options on the
30
Auto Channel Issue #14 June 2019
four tray sizes. But one the most versatile feature of the Titan Tray is the ability to add attachments to the tracks on the top side and outside edge of the frame rails all the way around the rack, as well as on the centre plates. The rack sizes are 1200x1200, 1500x1200, 1800x1200, and 2000x1400. They are supplied ready for assembly, which adds another level of versatility. They can also be disassembled and packed away neatly for storage. New Zealand buyers are benefitting from user feedback following thousands of kilometres of real-world use in harsh Australian conditions, which went into the development of this second generation of Titan Tray. It’s tougher, stronger and smarter. Rather than just tweaking their design, Rola went through a thorough rethink of what a
roof tray should deliver. The corner pieces have been redesigned to slot into new mitred rail corners, which were also made beefier to shoulder more of work. The mounting slots on the bars were also braced to resist deformation. Loads weighing up to 300kg can impart a lot of twisting force on the mounting points in a sideways lurch. The structure around the slots was redesigned to be much stronger. But the most common failure point for 4X4 roofracks is the attachment to the vehicle roof which points to another key benefit of the Rola Titan Tray. It uses Rola’s highly regarded heavy duty roof-bar mounting systems. For more information, see titantray.co.nz or, if you would like to become a reseller, call 0800 698 227.

Use your scan tool to charge up your business HOW MUCH SHOULD I CHARGE TO SCAN A VEHICLE?
Left: Paul Corbet sharing the latest training in Jaltest scan tools and diagnostics
T
his is a question often levelled at AECS trainer and product engineer Paul Corbett who runs training courses on diagnostic equipment and the vehicle diagnostic process for the automotive training and equipment supplier. “Nothing at all,” is Paul’s answer. He says this often raises eyebrows in the trade from people who forked out considerable sums for this equipment, then paid annual licence fees, and upgraded its software. “You don’t charge customers to use any other tools, like spanners and hoists, so why should you charge for a scanner?” asks Paul. “True. You don’t pay annual fees for your spanners. But the software upgrades, and the new vehicle types added to the scanner, are just a means of keeping the tool current. It becomes less useful without them.” Paul says sees scantools as a marketing tool as well as a workshop tool. They give workshop customers impartial information on any work that might be required, and that has two key advantages. It eliminates any suggestion that the workshop is recommending work that might not be necessary — apparently this has been known to happen — and it reduces the risk of ‘swapnostics’ — the practice of swapping parts out on a best guess basis until the fault is rectified, which is infuriating to customers and unlikely to win their future business. But as vehicle electronics become increasingly complex and dependent on the correct flow of micro-voltages, scan tools have become as indispensable as spanners. And, as manufacturers push through ADAS systems (advanced driver assistance systems) that take command of vehicle controls on the road to autonomous vehicles, the pace of development in this area is only going to accelerate. Scantools have become an essential part of any modern workshop but they are not quite the magic bullet. Fault codes aren’t always the whole story, especially in vehicles that have had less than
professional repairs in the past. And some workshops will have seen the random results that can be thrown up when, in the past, someone has accidentally reversed the polarity when jump-starting the vehicle. The owners won’t often think to pass on this vital piece of information. Paul says this diagnostic skill remains solely with the technician and his or her ability to find the problem quickly. Technicians need to hone this skill and work out what’s happening when something doesn’t add up using scan tools perhaps in conjunction with an oscilloscope, and the logic that will explain a problem or work out where a broken wire may be. Paul says workshops need to make sure they have these skills in-house. “To call in a specialist is both expensive and takes time, even if they are immediately available. And they may be no more successful — but you have spent a whole lot of money to find this out. “There is no substitute for quality equipment backed up with quality training and technical support,” Paul says. We train and support our customers to do this themselves in their workshops.”
Paul goes on to say, “At AECS we like to think outside the square and we try to encourage our customers to take a proactive approach to vehicle diagnostics.” Scan tools are required in virtually every workshop job from simple service resetting to calibrations and of course diagnostics, and shouldn’t be considered an ‘extra’ service, according to Paul. He says customers will appreciate garages finding other potential issues at the outset. “It makes total sense to the vehicle owner to only have a vehicle off the road once and not twice or three times in quick succession.” Paul says you should look at diagnostic checks as an opportunity — much the same as doing a battery diagnostic check — for free. If a battery is about to fail they would surely prefer to give you the business than call roadside assist when it fails on a cold morning when they are due at work. “Many of our customers have moved away from the reactive approach to vehicle diagnostics and taken the proactive approach, and the feedback we get is phenomenal,” Paul says. “This has revolutionized how we do business” and “we could not live without the tool” are typical of the comments fed back to AECS, Paul says. If you would like to know more about this fresh approach to diagnostics talk to the team at AECS on 06 874 9077 or email paul@aecs.net.

The Road to 400mph — Part Three WELCOME TO THE THIRD INSTALMENT OF OUR COVERAGE OF COOK MOTOR RACING’S 1000HP-PLUS SR20 TURBO POWER PLANT BUILD WITH WHICH IT HOPES TO CRACK 400MPH AND THE TWO-LITRE GAS RECORD AT BONNEVILLE
I
f you’ve missed the first two instalments of the 1000-plus horsepower pump gas SR20DET engine build for Cook Motor Racing (CMR), we suggest that you pick up Auto Channel issues 12 and 13 and read those first. For those of you following along, let’s cut to the chase and get right back into it. During the past month, Reg has spent time in Australia with drag racing legend Collin Willshire of Jett Racing — a team that knows how to pull power from four cylinders, given that Collin is the current world record holder with his 4G63-powered Eclipse. It was the compound turbo set-up the team runs that Reg found the most interesting. Having spent a good few hours chewing over the details of Jett’s set-up and getting Jett’s take on the project, Reg has had a few very critical questions answered regarding the turbo set-up. “I had sent them a big list of questions, and, then, when I got there, I just asked: ‘What would you do?’ They said they’d go compound turbo, which is not what I wanted to hear. Yeah, guys have done it with diesels and a couple drag cars, but that’s it really it. I threw four questions at them, trying to throw them off, and after about 10 minutes I realized that we’re going compound turbo,” recalls Reg. This will see a pair of Garrett turbos utilized on the SR20, which the team at Altech is currently sourcing. Another interesting fact to come out of Australia is the need to step the turbo manifold
34
Auto Channel Issue #14 June 2019
material up to the highly expensive Inconel, at a cost of around US$4000 for the materials to make one manifold alone. This step-up is to avoid the risk of warping flanges at the extreme temperatures and pressures the manifold will see. In a more sedate set-up, a small exhaust leak would mean nothing more than a loss in energy, but here, where escaped gases are upwards of 1700 degrees°F, that escaping gas would act like a gas axe, cutting its way through anything it touched. Burns Stainless is supplying the collector. Once all the materials arrive, Ryan from IMR Fabrication will face the complicated task of creating a manifold that will work within the very tight confines of the streamliner’s engine bay. The concern about gas axing external components is also a very real fear for within the motor itself. If, say, a valve seat were to come loose, the escaping gases could cut through the valve or, worse, right through the side of the head or engine — something that happens a lot Reg tells us. “The record for a gas car is 368mph; yeah, guys have gone faster but none has made that return pass the next day. What I think happens is that they do their run and, because it gets so hot, stuff moves inside the head. Then, when they go to do the back-up run, there is leakage past a valve. Before the run’s over, a huge hole has been torched through the side of the block.” While there is no real answer as to how to fix this issue, they can endeavour to minimize the risk by running as low a cylinder temp as possible while still
making the necessary power. The other solution is to monitor the flame front and ensure that, if the sudden pressure drop occurs, the engine is shut off instantly. Reg explains that it’s not ‘if’ this type of event will happen, but more ‘when’. It’s just an unknown as to whether they will get one run or ten. For 2019, the team will be using a Plex cylinder pressure monitoring system, which is a key component to the complex tuning approach. This will require all-new software to be coded in the MoTeC M150 — something we will delve into once these motors hit the dyno in a few weeks’ time. In the last issue, we spoke about the fact that the team will be running a dry deck block, but the plan has since changed; the water feeds that circulate the exhaust valves in the heads are now going to be added to the billet blocks in an attempt to keep cylinder head temperatures under control.
The team will run a semi-dry deck, with the rest of the water galleries to be plugged up with an old-school technique known as pinning, whereby you drill and tap the water galleries and wind in small alloy bungs. The theory is to avoid the stress you introduce to the metal during welding. This is something that Jett does and finds highly successful. The billet blocks are currently off being machined to suit this modification. Once they return, the assembly will commence, as the majority of the components have arrived. The basis of this is a pair of Mazworx billet cranks — something that Reg struggled to find in OEM stroke, with Mazworx basically being the only option. The pistons/ rod combination is from BME, with billet alloy connecting rods and custom pistons, which will see compression at 8.0:1. BME also supplied the DLC-
coated pins and rod bearings. The first of the mule engines has now hit the dyno with a single turbo set-up, and is purely to get the development kicked off for parts like the wiring loom. What did catch our eye was the billet manifold bolted to the side. Machined from solid material, it is built to take well beyond the expected 65 psi, and houses 12 2000cc Siemen injectors and a Bosch electronic throttle with three-inch inlet. The manifold is two-piece, with the plenum and runners separate. Next month, the dyno will have been running red hot, and we should have some preliminary results on how it’s panning out. At the time of writing, it is less than two months until the car ships out, so the deadline is coming fast — but you know what they say about pressure!

The world’s biggest tool truck ATS TOOL TRUCK COMBINES TRADITIONAL SERVICE WITH A NEW SERVICE MODEL
A
fter 18 years in the importing and wholesale distribution of hand tools, workshop equipment and consumables Stephen Cole is hitting the streets in the world’s biggest tool truck. Not literally... the van is the usual size VW Crafter van — tall enough for 188cm Stephen to stand up in it — but this new tool truck venture will represent more than 30 brands and well over 25,000 products, making it significantly different from most of the competition. Most tool trucks are dedicated to one or two main brands with an extensive but not complete range of tools. Customers have to go to another supplier for other gear. Even the more diverse operators only represent half a dozen brands. “Most seem to focus on selling tools — a socket or a spanner, but any sales person can do that. There’s so much more to this business than hand tools,” says Stephen. After seeing what flew off the shelves in his previous role as marketing manager for many of the brands now represented by Absolute Tool Supplies (ATS),

Stephen has a different focus for the ATS truck. Many of the lines he carries are consumables: nuts, bolts, washers, split pins, hose clamps, wiper blades, industrial cleaners, wipes, cable ties, wheel weights, lubricants (engine oil, gear and ATF) and other less mainstream items like knife and tool sharpeners — even fishing lures and other recreational products. “I plan to look after the people in the trade as well as looking after the trade,” he says. “From one-man bands to large corporate workshops I have the knowhow and skills to supply products at competitive prices in a timely manner,” says Stephen. “Plus I’ll be offering some awesome deals across a wide range of products and brands.” Stephen also has the expertise on board to help specify and supply some of the bigger pieces of gear like complete tool kits, compressors, drill presses, tyre machines and wheel balancing equipment — which is not what you get from most tool trucks. “It’s not quite a one-stop-shop but it’s damn close!” says Stephen. Stephen’s ATS truck will operate in Auckland and
surrounding areas but he has no boundaries. He will service customers throughout the country with the online side of the business. Stephen still wanted to go the tool truck route instead of being all online. “Being onsite helps you build a strong personal relationship with customers through regular visits and those conversations help you become a one-stop shop solution for those workshops. “Through my 18 years at my previous job I’ve a ton of contacts who can source pretty much anything, including from overseas. “There’s a gap in the market here providing a comprehensive service, through one-to-one onsite contact. Given the breadth of my experience and contacts, I’m in a unique position to do that,” Stephen says. “I stand by my business ethics, honesty, integrity and pride, and my motto, ‘meeting your demands and exceeding your expectations.” For more information, or to get a personal visit from Stephen, call 0274 816 901 or email info@atsl.nz or visit atsl.nz.
Utes look tough but the trade needs them to be tougher still IRONMAN 4X4 TAKES TRADE VEHICLES TO THE NEXT LEVEL
N
ow that the Ford Ranger is the topselling ‘car’ in New Zealand Terraquip’s Vince Rietveld wonders if the market for 4X4 accessories is about to plateau — but after such enormous growth in previous years it’s not a big worry. While a lot of these additional ‘cars’ might not go off-road, their owners are still keen buyers of accessories that will personalise their vehicles — a pressure that’s only got stronger as more of them take to the road. While the recreational market is strong, the majority of Terraquip’s business comes from the trade. “Some of these vehicles look tough but for the construction industry especially, they are not quite there,” says Vince. Farmers, government organisations and fleet operators all go to Terraquip for upgrades but most business comes from construction contractors wanting suspension mods and other equipment, especially bull bars tray inserts, canopies and tow bars. Ironman 4x4 offer a full range of automotive accessories including bull bars, suspension upgrades, side steps and rails, rear bars, underbody protection, lights, winches, snorkels and camping gear but Vince says its suspension work that generates the most value for workshops.
Suspension kits and components with raised height,
long travel and improved performance are available for most makes and models. Ironman 4x4 shock absorbers are available in 35mm Nitro gas or 41mm Foam cell. These have longer travel and are built stronger to deliver performance in all conditions. Leaf and coil springs are made from high quality SUP9 steel and are available in different load ratings from ‘comfort’ to ‘extra constant load’. Terraquip specialises in Ironman 4X4 equipment developed in Australia to provide a full range of accessories to the off-road market. That market exploded with the launch of many new 4X4 vehicles over the past two decades. And demand for aftermarket upgrades has only increased as new vehicle designs have veered to
cater for a more urban market. Terraquip and Ironman 4X4 have around 1200 different products available in more than 100 different product categories. Ironman 4x4 bull bars are modelled using 3D vehicle scanning techniques to provide a good fit while providing maximum vehicle collision protection. All bars are made from the highest quality SPHC oil and pickled steel to give maximum strength and rust resistance. They are finished using the Akzo Nobel powder coat system, which gives a thicker, smoother and more durable coating, and they can be colour-matched. Along with winch and air bag compatibility, ironman

4x4 bull bars offer affordable protection. Ironman 4x4 bull bars have a high strength mounting design utilising a replacement cross member that goes in the front of the chassis to which a winch can be mounted. The bar is then bolted to the new cross member. This design gives the ultimate in strength when winching as the winch is mounted to the chassis and not the bull bar itself. The majority of bars for late model vehicles are full replacement meaning the original whole front bumper is removed and replaced. This avoids the need to cut the bumper and results in a perfect fit. Very few other bars on the market offer the same features.
