Electric vehicles close to global tipping point BATTERY COSTS — THE MAIN BARRIER TO MASS ADOPTION — ARE DIVING, MEANING EVS WILL SOON BE THE CHEAPEST OPTION

While EVs are cheaper to run, their higher purchase price is the biggest barrier to mass uptake. The other concern is range anxiety, in which drivers want to see a similar range to fueldriven cars — even though they can be plugged

in overnight, meaning they are ‘full’ every day. However, that concern could also be alleviated by the news last month of the first factory production of batteries capable of giving a 300km charge in five minutes. Zero-emission electric cars can make a major contribution to reducing emissions, especially in countries like New Zealand, where electricity is mostly generated from renewable sources. Converting New Zealand’s passenger-car fleet to EVs would also do wonders for our balance of payments, saving the country an estimated $4 billion a year in fuel costs, most of which goes to overseas oil companies.

steep drop in battery costs is taking electric vehicles (EVs) close to the tipping point of rapid mass adoption around the world. The Guardian newspaper reported this week that global EV sales rose by 43 per cent in 2020 to more than three million and even faster growth is anticipated when plunging battery prices take their price below that of petrol and diesel models. This is forecast to happen in the next two to four years, between 2023 and 2025. It is already the case in Norway, where tax breaks mean electric cars are cheaper than other models. EVs’ market share there hit 54 per cent in 2020 compared with less than five per cent in most European nations.

ew car sales here are another indicator reflecting New Zealand’s distance from the upheavals affecting the rest of the world. While we are still seeing the impact of Covid on supply chains in auto parts, accessories, and vehicle imports, those inconveniences are being met for the most part with a shrug rather than a shriek. We are still buying the new cars we wanted pre-pandemic. Car sales were down drastically during lockdown — beyond 90 per cent — but bounced back to finish the year just 23 per cent down with 80,849 passenger vehicles sold. In April, Motor Industry Association CEO David Crawford was expecting a 35 per cent dip so the actual result is much better than expected. Remember that the rental market, which buys most new cars — at big discounts — still isn’t shopping because its main customers, overseas visitors, remain absent. As a result, Toyota took a big hit with sales down 31 per cent on 2019. But, as Kiwis weren’t allowed out, either, many opted for a new car. If it wasn’t for lack of stock, sales would have been even higher. For that reason, Toyota went into 2021 with 5700 orders on its books. The familiar look to the best sellers list — Ford Ranger (7975), Toyota Hilux (5796), and Toyota Rav4 (5341) — is interesting. Overseas, buyers are now flocking in droves to EVs. Some observers are predicting a global tipping point in favour of EVs within five years. Here, however, sales of new EVs remain a fraction of total sales. The best seller in 2020 was the Tesla Model 3, with 511 sales out of a total of just 1533 EV sales.

Government grants and tax breaks have cut the cost of new electric cars in some countries, but costing less without subsidies will be the most significant inflection point, according to James Frith, the head of energy storage at BloombergNEF. “Then we will really see the adoption of electric vehicles taking off and real market penetration,” he says. In 2020, 4.2 per cent of new cars were electric. Data from a University of Exeter study showed that in 2019, when EVs in Norway were 0.3 per cent cheaper, they achieved a 48 per cent market share. In the UK, where electric cars were 1.3 per cent more expensive, market share was just 1.6 per cent. Study author Professor Tim Lenton said that once the line of price parity was crossed, “Bang — sales go up. We were really struck by how nonlinear the effect seems to be”. BloombergNEF’s analysis predicts lithium-ion battery costs will fall to the extent that electric cars will match the price of petrol and diesel cars by 2023, while Lenton suggests 2024–2025. McKinsey’s Global Energy Perspective 2021, published on 15 January, forecasts that, “electric vehicles are likely to become the most economic choice in the next five years in many parts of the world”. An RAC poll of 3000 UK drivers, published on Thursday, shows the importance of price, with 78 per cent of motorists saying pure electric cars are still too expensive compared with conventional vehicles of a similar size and just nine per cent saying their next car would be electric. “The single biggest barrier to a driver choosing an electric car has to be cost,” said Rod Dennis, spokesman for the RAC. The fall in battery prices in the past decade has been dramatic and much faster than most people predicted, according to Frith. In 2010, even a small-car battery of 30kWh would have cost $30K — far more than the total price of an equivalent fossil-fuelled car. BloombergNEF’s research shows that today the battery pack costs US$4100, thanks to a scale-up in production and cuts in material costs, such as reducing the amount of expensive cobalt required. Frith said that in 2020 battery packs passed the milestone of US$100/kWh for buses in China. However, he expects further manufacturing improvements to make this the average price for all vehicles by 2023, meaning a small-car battery will cost $3K and electric cars will be the same price as their conventional counterparts. Electric cars are quieter and have faster acceleration; once motorists have owned one, they don’t go back to petrol or diesel power. In a recent poll of 2000 electric car owners, 91 per cent said

4

Auto Channel Issue #32 February 2021

they would not want to go back. So what about those people adding to the continuing rise of gas-guzzling SUVs and pickups? They will go electric, too, according to experts. New lithium-ion technologies are creating cheaper, more energy-dense batteries that could start being introduced mid decade. Of course, as battery packs come to predominate, recovery of materials from old batteries will become more economic as a source of materials for new batteries. An even more advanced technology, solid-state batteries, could enter the mass market by 2030 if new manufacturing methods can be mastered, Frith said. BloombergNEF forecasts average prices of about US$60/kWh by the end of the decade. “It is an incredibly exciting time,” Frith said. “We see so much innovation coming from all areas, whether industry or research, and so much money being poured in by governments and everyone, that it seems like there will be a lot of changes to come and it’ll just get more exciting.”

Heshbon all the way for Tyretracks TYRETRACKS’ EXPERIENCE BACKS ITS CHOICE OF HESHBON’S TOP-OF-THELINE LIFT hen Matt and Keli Lowther decided it was time to expand and move into a brandnew purpose-built tyre shop in Hamilton, they knew exactly where they were going for their lifting gear. Matt says they bought all new lifts and jacks for their old Frankton workshop when they set up their business, Tyretracks, 10 years ago. “Everything we put in has been faultless for

post clear floor hoists — a four-tonne Heshbon HL-26K and the six-tonne version, the HL-27M, and two in-ground scissor lifts, Heshbon HL-32Xs. Keli says the in-ground hoists provide a less

He was equally complimentary about the aftersales service from Century Distributors’ managing director John Jenkins. “He’s always on the end of the phone, says Matt. “I can ring him and get an answer instantly. This time, as the workshop is brand new, the Lowthers have taken the opportunity to install three in-ground scissor lifts in their workshop, which forms part of Ebbett Volkswagen’s new dealership development in Burbush. The new workshop will feature two two-

cluttered, more efficient workspace and it means there are no worries about driving any vehicle, no matter what its ground clearance, straight onto the lift. The Heshbon 52N wheel-alignment lift, the top model, is another interesting choice, as it features built-in secondary platform lifts, unlike the rolling jacks on most lifts of this type. “It becomes a hoist inside a hoist, says Matt. “I just think it’s much safer than rolling jacks. The hoists were ordered in black to tie in with the overall look and branding of the workshop. BNT partners with Fuchs and Fram to create new brand BNT ADDS NEW RANGE OF FILTERS MADE BY FRAM TO COMPLEMENT ITS FUCHS-BASED SUPERIOL OIL RANGE NT has long been a supplier of premium-grade oil in partnership with German oil supplier Fuchs. This partnership has ensured BNT’s position in the marketplace as a supplier of quality product. In 2018, the company elected to leverage this relationship with suppliers to extend its product offering to the cost-conscious customer. Commissioning Fuchs to produce a product

a complementary line of a multi-purpose grease, automotive D3 transmission fluid, and universal chain and bar fluid. The product range is available in 5-, 10-, and 20-litre quantities, and 450g and 2.5kg for grease. All products are available exclusively throughout the BNT and TATP network across New Zealand. BNT category manager Scott Dunning says the Superiol oil and grease range, representing great value, is supported by both the local Fuchs representatives and BNT’s own brand sales specialists. Since its launch, it has proven a popular

suitable for this market segment, BNT launched the Superiol oil solution, blended by Fuchs in Australia to meet BNT’s stringent specifications. This obviously includes meeting market and manufacturer standards, an essential baseline for OE oil distribution. BNT set Superiol specifications in an extensive range to cover the greatest number of applications. The range starts with 5W-30 C3 fully synthetic, 10W-40 semi-synthetic, and 10W-30 and 15W-40 mineral for the automotive market, a 15W-40 CI-4 for the commercial market, and a universal tractor transmission oil (UTTO) and hydraulic 46 for the off-highway market. Following the successful introduction and uptake of the Superiol oil products, BNT introduced

option in fit-for-purpose applications. “When we launched the product range, we anticipated that it would take time to get a new name established in the market,” he says. “In saying this, in only a comparatively short space of time we have received very positive feedback on both the brand and the product, which led to the next phase of the product development.” That development was to follow up with the launch of a total range of filtration products. To do this, Scott says BNT followed its successful oil strategy by working with a long-standing and market-leading partner, Fram Filters. “As with our oils, we wanted to cater to the market without compromising on the quality an OE supplier brings to the consumer,” Scott says.

Fram agent Mark Scurrah of Filpro states BNT is Fram’s leading distributor in the region, with a relationship spanning more than 25 years. He says Fram is the top-selling filter brand in North America, and is a leading supplier globally, available in 174 countries. Fram provides OEM equipment on Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, BMW, VW, Toyota, and Ford vehicles. Fram has been making filters since 1932 and designs, manufacturers, and tests its own products. The first products to launch in partnership with Fram are Superiol’s air, diesel fuel, and oil filters. Superiol oil filters: • are tested by OE manufacturing facility • meet OE vehicle standards service intervals • provide outstanding filtration and engine protection throughout service intervals • have quality anti–drain back and pressure-relief valves • are engineered to be compatible with all grades of synthetic and mineral-based oil • have cellulose filter media. Superiol air filters: • are tested by OE manufacturing facility • are easy to install — direct fit • filter out harmful particles such as dust, pollen, and sand to reduce engine wear • have increased performance when changed at regular service intervals. Note that BNT also offers a no-compromise line of Motorgear engine-timing components, Motorgear water pumps, Ultima shock absorbers, and C-Plus and Trans brake friction components, providing consumable solutions for the broadest range of workshops in New Zealand. Fasep balancer makes light work of wheels A FAST WHEEL BALANCER WITH A BUILT-IN WHEEL LIFTER MAKES A WINNING COMBINATION FOR HIGH THROUGHPUT WHEEL SHOPS raeme Jordan of Whangaparaoa’s Peninsula Motors was looking for a quality wheel balancer. He wanted speed as well as accurate balancing. Graeme’s customers do a lot of motorway driving, so an accurate balancer was essential. He talked to the team at Treadway Equipped and selected the Fasep V648 as a good fit for his business. Italian brands have a strong reputation in wheel-handling technology and Treadway Equipped marketing manager Stu Woodbridge says the V648, powered by the Fasep’s three-phase

G

inverter G3 Extreme motor, is “the Rolls-Royce of Italian wheel balancers”. This machine ‘s labour-saving features also improve workshop efficiency. Looking after your staff is increasingly important in running an efficient workshop and large wheel and tyre combinations can put a lot of physical strain on staff, especially in a high-volume environment. This machine is equipped with a wheel lifter that lifts and loads the wheel onto the main shaft so the operator really only has to secure it with a quick locknut. The innovative design of the shaft, using a bell flange,

dramatically improves accuracy and the hassle of mounting the tyre centrally on the shaft. Once the locking nut is on, the press of a pedal triggers the pneumatic locking mechanism, resulting in effortless, accurate clamping. The press of a button then triggers the alignment process. The 3D touchless system automatically measures the wheel data — distance, diameter, and width — using three triangulated sensors, for alloys or steel rims. It measures the run-out of the tyre and rim within 1mm accuracy. It can then calculate the best wheel placement on the vehicle to minimise vehicle drift. Two lasers indicate the weight positioning for clip-on or stick-on weights, with pinpoint accuracy.

The balancing process is fast. The G3 motor delivers a cycle time — with start, braking, and automatic wheel positioning — of 5.5 seconds. Stu says the speed and accuracy of the Fasep V648 and the physical effort it saves the operator make a winning combination for a high-end workshop. “And being Italian, it looks good too,” he adds. Blackfern Co-operative is offering members three months’ interest-free terms on equipment purchased from Treadway Equipped. Until 31 March 2021, they will also go into a 10,000 reward points draw.

starting performance with up to 70 per cent better electrical flow than other grid technologies in the market. It also offers up to two times the life of a standard flooded battery and superior performance over the life of a battery meeting the demands of modern vehicles.

&J Batteries’ commitment to supplying the best in battery technology is underlined by its extensive brand portfolio. The company has products for all applications, including automotive, commercial, motorcycle, marine, deep cycle, solar, industrial, and more. A standout in the portfolio is the award-winning battery brand Delkor, world renowned for quality and reliability. Delkor won the prestigious Korean Standard–Quality Excellence Index (KS-QEI) award for 15 consecutive years from 2005 to 2020. R&J Batteries is the exclusive distributor of Delkor batteries in New Zealand and Australia. It has been partnered with Clarios and the Delkor brand for more than 20 years. They share common values in supplying customers with innovative battery technology at competitive prices. Delkor Batteries’ comprehensive automotive range includes AGM, EFB, and calcium batteries.

Delkor Enhanced Flooded Batteries (EFB) are suitable for applications that operate at a partial state of charge that don’t require the deep-cycling capabilities of AGM batteries. A polyfleece scrim material added to the positive plate surface makes this possible. This helps to stabilise the active material of the plates, which increases the endurance. Vehicles fitted with idle start-stop technology require a battery that can support the repeated demand for engine cranking power. Delkor EFB batteries also benefit from the PowerFrame grid technology, which delivers increased dynamic charge acceptance, critical for the regenerative braking systems used in ISS vehicles. Like AGM batteries, EFB batteries are built to resist corrosion, which is the number one cause of car battery failure. Both Delkor AGM and EFB batteries are suitable for cars with ISS. Choosing which is most suitable should be based on the

R

DELKOR AGMW BATTERIES Delkor Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) batteries are ideal for high-end and advanced fuel-efficient vehicles with high electrical demands, such as those with idle-stop-start (ISS) technology and regenerative braking. These vehicles start approximately 16,000 times more per annum — based on average CBD travel of 15,000km — than an average car and require batteries that can deliver frequent cycling. Delkor Batteries’ patented PowerFrame grid technology provides consistent

power requirements of the vehicle. It’s always best to choose a battery replacement that matches the vehicle’s original battery specifications.

DELKOR CALCIUM BATTERIES Delkor calcium batteries contain a unique lead/ calcium alloy that produces a heavy-duty wrought plate that is able to withstand the most gruelling conditions. These batteries are suitable for the majority of the consumer vehicles in the market not equipped with ISS technology. In addition to automotive applications, Delkor calcium batteries are also suitable for agricultural, trucking, and commercial vehicles. Delkor calcium batteries offer extra starting power and provide consistently high performance for extended periods of time. The calcium range is made to last longer, has a longer shelf life, and provides convenience to the user where topping up of fluid is unnecessary.

Confident with equipment — the Treadway Equipped way FITTING OUT OR ADDING NEW WORKSHOP EQUIPMENT IS A BIG INVESTMENT AND TREADWAY EQUIPPED PUTS EXTRA EFFORT INTO GETTING IT RIGHT readway Equipped specialises in supplying workshop equipment and giving technicians a head start with it. The company also supplies the consumables that workshops need to keep running. Treadway Equipped has built its reputation on tailoring its solutions to workshops’ needs, including giving them the support and training they need to make the most of their new equipment. Sales manager Loren Bill says the company is so confident in matching customers with the right gear that it offers a 100/100 guarantee. “Because of our process in ensuring the right gear is recommended, we are completely comfortable in saying that after 100 days you will be 100 per cent satisfied that it is the right equipment for you to do your job the best way you can. If not, we will repair, replace, or refund in full.”

T

THREE GENERATIONS

Treadway Equipped sales manager Loren Bill

Shane Shaw at R&S Auto Service Centre, Haruru Falls, near Paihia, is one of a number of Treadway Equipped customers who have recently added a Steiner tyre-changer machine, replacing and upgrading older gear. Shane says that he’s gone for a model with a helper arm and an adapter for smaller wheels. He also took advantage of Treadway Equipped’s training and the high standard of follow-up support. “I’m now

looking at replacing the wheel balancer too,” he says. The Steiner machine offers the features of more expensive machines, with the power needed to handle big wheels and low-profile tyres, as well as the tough tyres used on utes and light trucks. Its good-value pricing makes it an ideal choice for its role as an add-on to this mechanical workshop. “High build quality and reliability have proven Steiner to be a leader,” says Loren.

RIGHT-SIZING Treadway Equipped places the emphasis on ‘rightsizing’ equipment for workshops and delivering long-term value over upselling into equipment that might not be fully utilised. Steiner offers a range of wheel and tyre machines and lifts, but Treadway Equipped represents a range of robust and proven brands through to market leaders such as Italian Fasep wheel aligners. Training on new equipment is all part of the service. “For example, on our aligners we offer two days of training, which can be spread out over time to get the most out of our trainers,” says Loren. “Also, there’s the full service and databank update packages we offer to ensure your maintenance costs are known and fixed for years to come. We also offer finance options so you can start earning a return on the equipment without tying up your cash. “We really enjoy seeing a customer’s business grow from the extra effort we went to in understanding their needs helping them make the right decision for them,” says Loren. For more information on Steiner tyre-changers, contact Treadway Equipped on 0800 436 436 or see treadwayequipped.co.nz.

Loren says the company has three generations of expertise and knowledge in the automotive workshop industry and, as they are also working in a family business, their people understand the needs and challenges of other family-run businesses. But the company also has the depth of experience and expertise needed to provide professional services to franchises, networks, and nationwide dealerships. Loren says that Treadway Equipped focuses on the business’s needs and the way that it operates before moving on to selecting equipment. “We can assess a workshop and help find efficiencies either through layout or equipment that is a better fit for the space and customer type,” Loren says. The company has also developed a range of options that helps companies transition into new areas or new ways of working. “Getting the right equipment can be a big decision and a big investment,” he says. “We help remove the risk with trial periods, and, if required, lease-to-own or finance options. “At the end of the day, we want our customers to succeed. That means equipment that they can rely on day in, day out at a cost of ownership that lets their business thrive,” Loren says.

ADDED VALUE That change can be big or as small as adding a tyre machine into a mechanical workshop to create an additional revenue stream. As the number of vehicle service bays in a workshop create a natural limit to throughput, adding a tyre-changer, wheel aligner, or brake lathe can create valuable new revenue streams. It also offers efficiencies that keep customers happy with a one-stop solution.

The changing face of battery replacement ADVANCED VEHICLE TECHNOLOGIES AND ELECTRONICS ARE PLACING GREATER DEMANDS ON BATTERIES — AND THEY MEAN BATTERY REPLACEMENT NOW HAS TO BE A CAREFULLY CONTROLLED PROCESS any people in the motor trade will have heard the complaint that ‘batteries don’t last as long as they used to’ or ‘they don’t make them as good as they used to’. Neither is true – batteries are better now than they’ve ever been, according to Century Yuasa’s Andrew Bottoms, marketing manager automotive for Australia and New Zealand. Manufacturers are continually incorporating more advanced

“All of this extra load on the electrical system means it is critical to not only select the correct battery technology and capacity, but also that specific step by step pre-and post-installation procedures are followed during battery replacements,” Andrew says. These steps will help avoid vehicle damage, loss of system functionality and even premature battery failure down the track. ‘Near enough’ is no longer good enough when it comes to battery selection. Century Yuasa is making this task, and correct installation, as simple as possible. Its ‘Battery Fitment Solution’ is a complete battery finder and fitment guidance system that will help futureproof installers. The system allows workshops to easily identify

technologies and electronics into vehicles as standard. It was not that long ago that reversing cameras, parking sensors or assisted parking and lane-keeping systems were optional extras, yet many of these are now standard in today’s vehicles. Manufacturers are also incorporating advanced emission control technologies, stop/ start engine systems and battery management systems to meet global CO2 emission standards and performance targets.

From a desktop computer, tablet or mobile phone, users can type in a vehicle registration number, VIN, or carry out a standard make/model search, select the correct battery. Then they will see the estimated time required to fit the battery, and the option to download step-by-step fitment

Car news

Charge your EV in five minutes RECHARGING COULD SOON BE AS FAST AS FILLING UP PETROL OR DIESEL VEHICLES atteries capable of fully charging in five minutes are now in production. Making electric cars as fast to charge as filling up petrol or diesel vehicles will go a long way towards overcoming the objections of drivers conditioned to think of fuel in conventional terms While most electric vehicles (EVs) can be easily charged overnight, giving them a ‘full tank’ every day and making charging a 30-second activity you can do at home, ‘range anxiety’ is one of the reasons many people are staying away from EVs. Well, that and the price — see front page. Running out of charge during a journey is a worry for drivers if it means having to wait a long time to recharge. The new lithium-ion batteries developed by Israeli company StoreDot and manufactured by Eve Energy in China offer a five-minute charge. “The number-one barrier to the adoption of electric vehicles is no longer cost; it is range anxiety,” said Doron Myersdorf, CEO of StoreDot. “You’re either afraid that you’re going to get stuck on the highway or you’re going to need to sit in a charging station for two hours. But if the experience of the driver is exactly like fuelling [a petrol car], this whole anxiety goes away.” StoreDot has already demonstrated its “extreme fast-charging” battery in phones, drones, and scooters, and it has now produced 1000 batteries

B

to showcase its technology to carmakers. Daimler, BP, Samsung, and TDK have all invested in StoreDot, which has raised $130 million to date and was named a Bloomberg New Energy Finance Pioneer in 2020. A five-minute charge would, however, require much higher powered chargers. “The bottleneck to extra-fast charging is no longer the battery,” Myersdorf said, adding that the charging stations and the grids that supply them now need to be upgraded, which is why the company is working with BP. “BP has 18,200 forecourts and they understand that, 10 years from now, all these stations will be obsolete if they don’t repurpose them for charging — batteries are the new oil.” Existing Li-ion batteries use graphite as one electrode, into which the lithium ions are pushed to store charge. But when these are charged rapidly, the ions get congested and can turn into metal and short circuit the battery. The StoreDot battery replaces graphite with semiconductor nanoparticles into which ions can

Put away your thumbs WHILE MANY OLDER READERS WILL HAVE THUMBED A RIDE AT SOME POINT IN THEIR LIVES, NEW RESEARCH IN THE UK SHOWS COVID HAS ALL BUT KILLED OFF HITCH-HIKING AND EVEN CAR SHARING AMONG THOSE WHO STILL DID THAT early three-quarters of people in the UK who presumably offered or accepted lifts previously — 72.6 per cent — have stopped car sharing since the start of the Covid pandemic in March. The poll canvassed 936 people and was undertaken by the UK’s largest independent car retailer, Motorpoint. Motorpoint CEO Mark Carpenter said, “The results of our recent poll definitely reflect the desire by people to maintain social distancing at all times when outside of their home. Where there is a need to offer someone a lift — for instance for work — we would always recommend that everyone adhere to the [UK] government’s recommendations to ensure that everyone concerned stays safe and secure at all times.” That confirmation of the urge to travel alone won’t upset Motorpoint, which has more than 5000 low-mileage, nearly new cars and light commercial vehicles for sale.

pass more quickly and easily. These nanoparticles are currently based on germanium, which is water soluble and easier to handle in manufacturing. But StoreDot’s plan is to use silicon, which is much cheaper, and it expects these prototypes later this year. Myersdorf said the cost would be the same as existing Li-ion batteries. Dozens of companies around the world are developing fast-charging batteries, with Tesla, Enevate, and Sila Nanotechnologies all working on silicon electrodes. Others are looking at different compounds — Echion, for example, is using niobium-oxide nanoparticles. “I think such fast-charging batteries will be available to the mass market in three years,” said Professor Chao-Yang Wang, at the Battery and Energy Storage Technology Center at Pennsylvania State University in the US. Research by Wang’s group is being developed by the company EC Power, which Wang founded. It carefully increases the temperature of the battery to 60°C, which enables the lithium ions to move faster but avoids the damage to the battery usually caused by heat. Professor Wang said this allows a full charge in 10 minutes. Wang said new research published in Nature Energy on Monday showed this battery could be both affordable and eliminate range anxiety. “Finally, we are achieving parity with gasoline vehicles in both cost and convenience. We have the technology for $25,000 electric cars that race like luxury sport cars, have 10-minute rechargeability and are safer than any currently on the market,” he said. Wang noted that fast charging must also be repeatable at least 500 times without degrading the battery to give it a reasonable life and that the EC power battery can do so 2500 times. Myersdorf said the StoreDot battery could be recharged 1000 cycles while retaining 80 per cent of original capacity.

New-vehicle market “better than anticipated” DECEMBER’S VEHICLE REGISTRATION FIGURES SHOW A DROP OF 25 PER CENT COMPARED WITH THE SAME MONTH IN 2019, BUT THAT WAS “BETTER THAN ANTICIPATED,” SAID MOTOR INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION CHIEF DAVID CRAWFORD hen we were in the depths of the Covid-19 lockdown period, we thought the market could be down as much as 35 per cent by year’s end.” The market is also being affected by stock constraints for high-volume models, slowing the bounceback, but that should ease this year. December 2020 notched 8383 registrations, down 2777 units on December 2019. In total, 2020 saw 119,398 registrations, compared with 154,479 in 2019, a drop of 35,081 units. Toyota took second and third spots, with the Hilux registering 443 and the Rav4 387 units to the Ranger’s 662 new units. The top-selling passenger and SUV models for the month were the Toyota Rav4, followed by the Mitsubishi ASX (327 units) and the Mazda CX-5 (326 units). That helped Toyota

Motorists don’t want speed limiters

Active noise cancelling for cars ISRAEL-BASED SILENTIUM HAS INTRODUCED ACTIVE ROAD-NOISE CANCELLATION TO THE CAR INDUSTRY FOR THE FIRST TIME ilentium’s industry-first technology is similar to that found in noise-cancelling headphones, but it manipulates a larger amount of air. Up to six accelerometers on a vehicle’s chassis monitor unwanted road noise and send a signal to an onboard control unit, which plays an equivalent antinoise signal through the vehicle’s speaker system. The pressure waves from both the unwanted

S

exterior noise and the speakers reach occupants’ eardrums at exactly the same time, cancelling each other out. After several years of development, Jaguar and Land Rover were the first carmakers to integrate Silentium’s Active Acoustics software into three of their new vehicles. Active road-noise cancellation removes 90 per cent of unwanted noise across a broad band of frequencies — from 20Hz up to 1kHz — providing a quieter and more refined experience for occupants. In the latest development, Silentium has signed a memorandum of understanding with Hyundai Mobis to collaborate on a global vehicle production programme for an unnamed brand, with more automotive projects in the pipeline. Silentium’s Active Acoustics technology will be especially useful in electric cars, where the noise vibration and harshness (NVH) of mechanical systems and wind noise are thrown into sharp focus by the absence of engine noise.

Here’s one from the ‘no surprise there, then’ basket: an online survey of UK motorists found 61 per cent of drivers were against a change set to come into force from 2022. Under new legislation passed by the European Commission, all vehicles in the European Union would be fitted with Intelligent Speed Assistance. It would use a car’s GPS system to track its positions as well as its speed. The car would signal an alert when the road’s speed limit had been reached. The European Transport Safety Council believes limiters would help reduce collisions on the roads by 30 per cent and save up to 25,000 lives within 15 years. Some 1524 people took part in the study by Motorpoint, the UK’s largest independent car retailer. Motorpoint chief executive Mark Carpenter said, “We still need to guard against an over-reliance on gadgets such as speed limiters when travelling in our cars. We need to continue to keep our eyes on the road and hands on the wheel at all times.”

“Where did he come from?!” IT’S A SCENARIO MANY DRIVERS WILL BE FAMILIAR WITH: CHECKING MIRRORS AND SURROUNDINGS BEFORE BEGINNING A LANE CHANGE ONLY TO FIND ANOTHER VEHICLE HAS APPEARED RIGHT ALONGSIDE, SEEMINGLY OUT OF NOWHERE witching lanes is a routine manoeuvre for regular motorway users, but even the most attentive drivers can sometimes fail to spot vehicles also changing lanes in their blind spots. Ford‘s new lane-keeping system with blindspot assistance makes its global debut on the

S

all-new Ford Escape SUV. The technology not only monitors the driver’s blind spot for vehicles approaching from behind, but it can also apply counter-steering to warn the driver and discourage a lane change if a potential collision is detected. The Escape’s radar sensors scan parallel lanes for vehicles up to 28m behind, 20 times per second, while driving at speeds from 65 to 200kph. An intervention can be automatically activated if the control system senses a lane change by monitoring road markings using the forward-facing camera, and the technology calculates that the two vehicles are on a collision course. The lane-keeping system with blind-spot assist can intervene to help prevent collisions with vehicles approaching with a closing speed of up to approximately 30kph.

ADAS data swarms bug vehicle testing Testing of new vehicles’ Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) in increasingly complex scenarios is creating ‘data swarms’ and potential conflicts among vehicles and testers all in constant communication with each other. AB Dynamics said this isn’t a problem on the roads, as cars aren’t ‘read’ the way they are in testing, but this challenging scenario prompted the company to develop TrackFi PowerMesh specifically for automotive testing. The dual-band IP radio offers highly dependable data transfer through secure mesh networks, which are more reliable than standard WLAN technology.

LAUNCH TIME HAYDEN PADDON’S HYUNDAI EV BUILD IS COMPLETE. FINALLY THE 400-PLUSKILOWATT EV MONSTER IS READY TO HIT THE GRAVEL — FULLY CHARGED AND READY FOR SPECIAL STAGE o, 18 months and 10,000 man-hours of design and engineering later, on 4 November 2020, we, Paddon Rallysport, finally showed the world our Hyundai Kona EV rally car — one of the first electric vehicle (EV) rally cars in the world. The end result is something of which we are hugely proud. While everything is designed and analysed on sophisticated computer software, what things look like on the computer screen and what they look like in real life can differ, but we were relieved to see the final packaging and aesthetics looked as good as we hoped. Despite the technological advancements of this car and the fact that, at the core, it has a completely different heart/engine to what we are used to, we were also focused on making sure the car looks good. After all, people will first judge by what they see in those first few seconds. It was also about the car having a point of difference inside and out — that has meant some unique design ideas that not only incorporate a futuristic theme but which are also practical for this type of car. This involved specific designs for the

wing mirrors, the internal roof vent — to help the flow of air over the roof to the rear wing — and the diffuser vents in the guards, right down to the dash

console design of the car; we didn’t want this to be just another car. Sound is also a crucial part of the final packaging and, while we hoped to have the sound generator on the car for launch, it’s not quite ready. However, it is still at the top of our list of objectives, and we are not far away from having it on the car. As with any major project build, the last phase of the build was the most time-consuming: making all the body panels fit; designing and making the composite panels; final fitment; plumbing of the car; and every single bracket, bolt, and fitting that

we had to design or source from scratch. It’s all the work that you can’t see beneath the skin that has been so time-consuming. When building a car like this for the first time, there are no plans or designs to refer to. We have had to design and make more than 1000 separate parts — that’s over and above what we can source from suppliers. After the initial raw roll-out of the car six weeks before the launch, it was all hands on deck to prepare the car for final assembly. This started with a full strip-down of the car, vapour blasting the chassis, and working with our local Cromwell Collision Repairs to prepare the bodyshell and get it painted in its base colour of a dark grey with a hint of metallic. Much time was also spent on sealing the cockpit, which is super critical for a rally car — and certainly more challenging when you have a big hole in the floor for the battery. Meanwhile, in Tauranga, Southern Ocean Boat Builders was finalising the fitment of a carbonfibre bodykit in a road-going Kona, which was then sent down and fitted to the car. This entailed the bumpers, front and rear guards, side skirts, and wings. The easiest part of the assembly and build was actually fitting the motors and battery. Both front and rear motors, along with the battery, can be mounted to the chassis within 30 minutes. The car has been designed for quick fitment of parts, and a major plus to the EV is how quickly you can replace or exchange parts. However, all the

routing of the high-voltage (HV) and low-voltage (LV) wire looms, cooling hoses, and fire plumbing is time-consuming. This car has more cooling than a combustion car, with three separate coolers for the battery and the two inverters. Electrically, the water pumps, power-steering system, and auxiliary systems — such as lights — work on separate LV wiring circuits that have to be integrated into the MoTeC power distribution module (PDM) and M1 along with the HV systems of the car. While we have a base software package to get the car going and started, we have a clean

sheet of paper ahead of us with regard to extracting the most from the car in terms of torque vectoring, range management, and brake regeneration. The final touch to the car was the full vinyl wrap from Sign It Signs in Queenstown. Then the two days of filming before the launch acted as our first drive of the car on gravel. Straight out of the box, the handling and performance of the car were far greater than we expected, with the World Rally Championship (WRC)–like suspension and the very low centre of gravity making for a very balanced and easy car to drive — and that’s before we have done any development work! So that excites us and gives us good reason to be very positive about the future of this project. With the car coming in at just over 1400kg, we met our targets in all areas of the initial build. The car has been purposely built on the heavy side as we begin development. As we do more tests and events, we will start lightening parts to find the thresholds one at a time. If we had done it the other way — starting light and then making it stronger — it would be more time-consuming and put more strain on budgets. As a small team with a much smaller budget than it may appear from the outside, we have to do things in the most efficient way possible, while also making sure the car is reliable. In the running we have done with the car to date during filming and a small demo at Jacks Ridge, we have had no mechanical teething issues at all. That is certainly the benefit of so few moving parts throughout the motors and driveline and the simplicity of the car. The sophistication comes with the software and getting all the bits in the car communicating with one another correctly. This is the next phase of the project over the coming 12 months: development — and developing a battery solution to withstand a full rally distance.

The current battery, which weighs 300kg, is purely for testing purposes, to help us simulate every condition in rallying so that we can calculate the final battery size required. The concept has been designed around a bigger battery; now we have to confirm just how big that battery needs to be. The current battery, supplied by our supplier in Austria, is also very different from an OEM battery, hence the weight. The casing is FIA crash tested for side and vertical impact, there is a thick steel bash plate underneath the cells, and significant cooling and a fire system are built within the battery. This has been a huge project and a massive undertaking by our small team of seven people. Each and every member of Paddon Rallysport has poured heart and soul into this, with most team members spending up to 400 hours each in the past month to get the car over the finish line. A huge thank you goes to Matt Barham, Mike Pittams, Rory Callaway, Ben Fretwell, Ari Pettigrew, and Matt Bowater. A huge thanks also to all our team partners, in particular, Hyundai New Zealand, Meridian Energy, YHI Energy, Pirelli, Gen Less, Bar’s Bugs, Gravity Internet, Z Energy, Bailey Caravans, and Winmax Brake Pads, which have stuck behind us with this project — along with all local and national suppliers that have helped. Now: on with the development. It’s full speed ahead into 2021!

20th Beach Hop’s winning formula REPCO BEACH HOP PLANNERS HAVE JUST TWO MONTHS TO PULL TOGETHER THE 2021 EVENT, MAKING IT THE SECOND HOP OF THE SUMMER he tyre smoke and the final notes of the rock and roll blast from the past have barely drifted on the wind away from Whangamata’s last Beach Hop yet cruisers from all over the country are already preparing to head back. The Covid lockdown hit just as the crowds and their cars were about to head to the Coromandel town for the 20th running of this iconic summer event. Founder Noddy Watts was determined to try again in November but the logistics were huge, having to transfer traffic-management plans, health and safety plans and dealing with entrants who already had entry packs, and the uncertainty over who could or would come to the week-long event starting on 25 November. Thanks to sponsors, it all fell into place again, and, as people had time to work on their cars in lockdown, the organisers ended up with a waiting list for November. The 20th event went off in style and planning is well under way for the 2021 March event, where the prize will be a 1956 Ford Thunderbird in pink. The theme for the 21st party is ‘Grease is the word’. Voting in the top 10 for 2020, via donation buckets collecting for the local surf club, produced a winner in the form of Lisa Sawyer and her stunning white Model A Ford (main picture). Lisa and husband Keith are regulars at Beach Hop but this was the first time she had brought her own build.

Dave and Bridget Murtagh’s ’64 Ford Galaxie won at Repco Beach Hop 19, so it was no surprise to see it back in the top 10 again

Gauging the vitals High ambient temperatures and air conditioners place extra strain on a vehicle’s cooling system. Most modern cars are equipped with a simplified coolant-only temperature gauge but some rely entirely on warning lights for hot and cold. Hard-working engines will benefit most from an aftermarket temperature gauge. Redarc’s 52mm dual temperature gauge (G52-TTT) monitors both engine oil and coolant temperatures. An oil temperature–only version is also available (G52-TA). Accurate monitoring means the driver can reduce the load placed on the engine or transmission to reduce the temperature and prevent engine failure. Visit redarc.co.nz for more information on Redarc gauges.

Raasm air or water hose reel This 3⁄8-inch Raasm fixed air or water hose reel comes with an ABS drum and brackets in painted steel. The retractable 18m black rubber hose is ideal for keeping busy workshops tidy and working efficiently. Check out model number 9430.102. Contact Emco on 07 850 5240, or email sales@emco.co.nz.

Take control of brakes Any trailer and load heavier than 2500kg must be fitted with an invehicle controller that can operate the trailer’s brakes independent of the towing vehicle, to counter swaying. Redarc’s Tow-Pro Elite Electric Brake Controller offers selectable proportional or usercontrolled trailer braking modes. Proportional mode applies the brakes progressively to avoid skidding. User-controlled mode is suitable for off-road, dialling up or down to suit the terrain. Modern dashboards have limited spare real estate; the Tow-Pro Elite’s low form factor is designed to be installed within the dash panel. For more information, see redarc.co.nz.

Time and space saving The Steiner Professional Series ST380 tyre-changer combines high-quality build with innovative design. The vertical column has a helicoidal motion; it lifts and rotates, meaning the machine can be positioned against a wall, utilising space wasted by most automatic tyrechangers. The electric bead breaker eliminates the need to rely on unreliable pneumatic pressure, making it more efficient, safer, and quieter. For more details, contact Treadway Equipped on 0800 436 436.

How to retain technicians CREATING A GOOD PLACE TO WORK CALLS FOR GOOD COMMUNICATION ne of the best ways to ensure you have a place that technicians like to work is first to understand what frustrates them. A survey of United States workshops by a tool supplier found, not surprisingly, that 29.8 per cent of technicians listed salary as their biggest frustration at work. Some were focused on their actual hourly rate of pay; others were more concerned with how they were paid. The second largest frustration was lack of career advancement options (25.8 per cent) meaning technicians were almost as frustrated with career advancement limitations as they were with pay. There was a major concern, especially for techs in smaller independent workshops, that shop owners and managers didn’t have anything resembling a career development plan for staff. Other frustrations noted by technicians included lack of flexibility in work hours (19.4 per cent); tool investment (19.4 per cent); and ‘other’, which included recruiting, reputation, and perception (12.1 per cent).

O

ADDRESSING TECHNICIAN PAY If your pay isn’t at least competitive, you are not going to recruit or retain great technicians. There simply aren’t enough techs to fill the vacancies out there, which gives techs leverage. Do what you can to find out what other workshops in your area are paying their techs. You need to know where you stand. Note that workshops can, and will, go out of their normal range to get good people, because those people are more valuable. One of the hardest but most important aspects of addressing pay is to have candid conversations with your techs to get a clear understanding of how they feel about their pay. This doesn’t mean

38

Auto Channel Issue #32 February 2021

agreeing to whatever they want, but it helps you get an understanding of where they want to be, and it’s an opportunity to explain why you pay the way you do and other business costs. It is not easy but opening this channel is a great way to build alignment and agreement.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT Again, instead of leaving this issue unresolved and unspoken, talk about where you want to take the business with your technicians. Not only will this help technicians get a better understanding of their role in achieving your shop’s vision, but it will also help them see the future opportunities available to them as the shop grows. Note that some techs will be perfectly content in their role while others will be more ambitious, and it pays to know this. Some technicians may want to move into different roles, such as management. For both of you, it will always pay to tell them exactly how they can get there. Addressing this major career development concern for technicians is sure to pay dividends in recruiting and retaining technicians. Having open lines of communication with your technicians helps create a great place to work and that vibe will be one of your strongest tools in recruiting and retaining great technicians.
