A PASSION FOR MOTOR RACING, MODIFYING, AND RESTORING MOTOR VEHICLES AND A GAP IN THE MARKET FOR BUSINESSES TO PROVIDE THE RIGHT PARTS LED LOGAN HARRIS TO SET UP TURBO BITS

Before Turbo Bits, Logan was already car obsessed and had worked on exciting projects, such as a 1989 Nissan 300ZX twin turbo, a 1990 Nissan 300ZX twin turbo, a Volkswagen Golf R32 that boasts a Turbo Bits GTX3582R ball bearing turbo pushing out 520hp at all four wheels, and his latest — a W111 series 1965 Mercedes-Benz Fintail.

It was in 2010 while hunting for a Mitsubishi turbocharger rebuild kit that he realised that no one — including the official local dealer — could import it at the right price from China, Taiwan, or Japan. So, he decided to take matters into his own hands and, thinking there must be other similar automotive parts Kiwis did not have access to, proceeded to search and offer his services sourcing and importing parts that were hard to find locally.

Fast forward to the present and Logan’s Turbo Bits is now an automotive force to be reckoned with. “As well as the variety of turbochargers in stock, we offer our customers a wide range of performance motor racing parts and accessories, with inventory increasing each month,” says Logan. “These are often popular with motorsport fabricators and workshops specialising in race car preparation and modifying.”

As a result of the nationwide shipping delays experienced in 2021–2022 due to Covid and staff shortages in the courier and freight industry, Turbo Bits identified and mitigated the risk of delivery delays by opening a second warehouse in Auckland. This allowed urgent orders to be collected in person in the region, within hours if necessary. Logan explains: “We understand our products are often urgently required by customers and can mean thousands of dollars per day in losses while company vehicles are out of action. Having stock in Auckland also drastically cut down delivery time frames in the North Island during periods of increased pressure in the domestic freight system.

“We reduced international delivery times by using our own DHL Express account, as DHL have their own dedicated planes to transport air freight worldwide when other companies like FedEx and UPS rely on passenger flights, which during worldwide flight restrictions saw large delivery delays in international freight.”

Turbo Bits carry around 300 different models in New Zealand and have access to thousands of aftermarket and OEM products by special order if necessary. They have a double reward point offer through Blackfern.
