There’s gold in them thar car parts! WHEN IT COMES TO PROMOTION, PARTS CONNECTION SAYS THAT THERE’S NOTHING QUITE LIKE CASH ots of promotions to businesses and consumers are built around offering all kinds of gifts, usually with sweeteners of the ‘but wait, there’s more!’ free-bench-top-oven variety. Parts Connection reckons most that businesses have enough knives, barbecue sets, and even barbecues these days. What Parts Connection general manager Pam McNickle believes people in business can always use more of is cash. The company’s Gold Rush promotion offers a prize pool of a minimum of $20K every month — and more if the top cash prize of the previous month isn’t claimed. In that case, the biggest gold-

rush nugget jackpots into the next month’s prize pool. A note of clarification here: there’s no actual gold — nuggets or otherwise. It’s all cash — as we established earlier. Getting among the gold (cash) is easy. All your business has to do is purchase car parts from any of

the Parts Connection businesses. Parts Connection will send a uniquely numbered gold nugget card out with each invoice. To find out whether you have a winning nugget card, simply go to the pcgold.co.nz webpage, enter your ID (see following), then enter two numbers — your lucky gold nugget number and

For the most part, the automotive business is humming along nicely and the recovery from the full stop that we had last year continues to strengthen the longer we stay out of the clutches of further lockdowns. However, all is not rosy. An interview with Famous Pacific Shipping’s country manager in this issue shows that the hiccup we have had with parts supply is likely to continue for far longer than previously thought — possibly beyond the end of the year. And the pressure on shipping has led to some extraordinary price increases, in the region of 700 to 800 per cent. This is certain to create inflationary pressures, not just in the automotive industries but across the board. Sharp fuel increases will only add to this pressure. While we might be tempted to feel we have dodged a bullet here in New Zealand, we can’t be complacent. In 2020, we all said this shows us we can’t take anything for granted. That still applies.

the unique code — and you’ll find out straight away whether your card is a lucky gold nugget card that makes you an instant cash winner. “It works like a scratch card, but without the scratching,” says Pam. It works in the same instant way too. As soon as you check your unique numbers, you’ll find out whether you’re a winner. There’s no need to collect or maintain a balance of nugget cards. Winnings will be transferred into your bank account. Pam says $20K worth of cash prizes is injected into the prize pool each month, regardless of what was claimed in the previous month. There are various cash amounts up for grabs every month, with the minimum prize nugget never being less than $500. Pam says that if every customer checked their gold nugget cards each month, all of the prizes would be claimed. Remember though — if the biggest nugget/cash prize — it can be anything from $5K to $20K — is not claimed, it’s added to next month’s biggest nugget, making it a double nugget — or more! You can check your nugget cards right up until midnight on 15 December 2021 to see if you’re an instant winner. Pam offers some timely advice. She says that last year the jackpot nugget grew to $65K and remained unclaimed. She says that means it’s seriously worthwhile logging in and checking your lucky nugget cards as soon as you receive them. “We’re literally trying to give money away,” she says — and, of course, promote the Parts Connection business. The more parts you buy — on separate invoices — the more nuggets you can check. Just make sure you log in and check the nugget card in the same month to avoid missing out on that month’s mega nugget. The promotion runs through until 30 November 2021. If you are a Capricorn member, you will already

be in the system, Pam says, and you can log in with your Capricorn member number, but the promotion is open to all trade customers. If you are not a Capricorn member, simply sign up to get a Gold Rush ID number, which, says Pam, saves you entering more details every time you check out your nuggets. Keep up to date with the winners by following the Parts Connection website, Facebook, and Instagram pages, as well as in the Capricorn Ignition and Sparks magazines. Parts Connection has 14 branches, each specialising in a number of car makes, offering both second-hand and a range of new replacement parts. The branches are all in Auckland, but the inventory is managed centrally and parts are distributed nationwide, offering an overnight service to most parts of the country. Finding the right lift fit A WORKSHOP’S PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS PLAY A BIG PART IN CHOOSING THE RIGHT HOIST electing a lift isn’t just about accommodating the vehicles lined up outside. Details like workshop ceiling height, flooring material, and turning spaces are just some considerations that favour one lift design over another. When buying for the first time or replacing existing equipment — and well before deciding on a lift type — it’s important to look at the workshop with fresh eyes and consider any relevant details. To get an independent perspective on this, we looked up some specific advice from the US industry. The national accounts director of a US lift distributor says that hoists have long been one of the best investments a professional workshop can make, while a manufacturer rep told us that how a facility is laid out is one of the most important considerations when selecting lifting equipment. She said that she encourages prospective buyers to take a hard look at details like available space, traffic flow, flooring, ceiling height (overhead clearance), and whether the facility is leased or owned. If fixed lifts are not permissible or cost-effective in leased premises, it’s important to know this, and a mobile column lift might be the best or only option.

S

MEASURE MORE THAN ONCE Even before shopping, get accurate measurements and statistics for the bay or garage, including ceiling height. “Check to make sure the garage or service bay can accommodate the fully raised height of the lift when it’s loaded with the vehicles you’ll be working on,” says the distributor. “When it comes to twopost lifts, overhead crossbars can sometimes limit

6

Auto Channel Issue #35 May 2021

how high you can raise a vehicle. Make sure to account for the crossbar in your calculations. If the vehicle won’t fit, see if the lift is available in an extended-height edition. “Turning radius is another factor in lift selection, usually at the point of facility design. Basically, you need to make sure that the vehicles you’re planning to service can be driven into the bay without wasting time manoeuvring. This especially comes into play in workshops with irregular shapes, narrow entrances, or other floor-mounted equipment.”

MATERIALS AND MOCK-UPS Find out whether the concrete floor (for example) and the ground substance beneath it can support heavy lifting equipment. “Like everything else, concrete slabs have their weak points and strong points. It’s a bad idea to install it near a seam, slab edge, or directly over a tension cable,” she says.  Get a second opinion from professionals who can help to see the big picture. This can be the lift distributor, installer, and even a facility planner. Another tool that end-users can tap into is 3D floorplanning software. Some lift manufacturers use special software to walk customers through a 3D version of their workshop. Sweden-based Ecdesign is one company

that offers this experience. According to their site, “The Ecdesign repair shop planner [helps endusers] create a well-planned layout and maximise usage of space.” Features of the software include drawing tools, the ability to input existing drawings, 3D models, and walk-through videos showcasing a final floorplan or alternative layouts.

SHOP SMART, AND SAFE Knowing the dimensions of your workspace, the weight classes of the vehicles that you’ll be lifting, and what features are most important to you — even before comparing brands — will all save time in the purchasing process. Then you need to weigh those up against the technical specifications on specific products to work out what best suits the weight class of vehicles serviced, as well as product features such as charging capabilities. Consider whether you need to add three-phase power wiring to the shop, or is battery power the way to go? Finally, don’t neglect safety. Buyers should compare safety features and systems, consider if there are added risks when setting locks, and only consider lifts that have passed independent safety testing. When the research into fit, function, and features is done, it’s time to buy. But the journey to technician satisfaction and improved ROI doesn’t end there. After the purchase, it’s time to work with a reputable lift installer to get the new lifting equipment up and ready to use in the bay. Many lift manufacturers use a network of third-party service teams throughout the country to help end-users with installation, set-up, and support. And after that, a consistent, closely adhered to maintenance schedule will set the stage for success, as well-maintained equipment prevents downtime and ensures that technicians are safe and productive. Determining not merely which lift works but where it will work will help ensure maximum technician productivity and safety on the job.

LEDs mark out vehicle safety zones NEW ‘LIGHT PAINTING’ TECH ATTRACTS ATTENTION AND DEFINES SAFETY ZONES AROUND VEHICLES ehicle lighting can play an important role in protecting employees from the potential dangers of moving machinery. Hella offers two styles of warning lamps that project red lines on the area around working vehicles that dramatically increase safety for staff, pedestrian customers, and drivers. People on a mission in stores or warehouses can seem ‘blind’ to the dangers of forklifts or scissor lifts operating in the same area. The BL470 is a 530mm wide strip-light that can be mounted around the top sides of the cab that projects a 2m long stripe of light on the floor. The powerful red safety stripe of light gets people’s attention and intuitively indicates a nogo zone that will keep staff and pedestrians at a safe distance. Each BL470 consumes 25W. It has a weatherproof polymer housing with a UV-, chemical-, and impact-resistant Grilamid lens. It is sealed to IP 6K9K, meaning that it will handle exposure to weather or dusty conditions, and its ‘multi-volt’ circuitry on board will plug and play with either 12V or 24V DC systems. It comes with 2.5m of cable, rotating stainless-steel mounting brackets, and a five-year warranty. Hella

V

believes this lamp offers exceptional durability in demanding environments. For smaller vehicles, or where space is at a

premium, Hella offers the SL60 warning lamp in a circular housing 70mm in diameter, 63mm deep, and 100mm tall from the base of the bracket. This lamp uses a Visiotech lens that still projects a beam of light but at a more modest maximum of 280 lumen. The lamp consumes just 5.5W for the red light and 7W for the blue option, but its input circuitry will handle voltages from 10 to 80, so it can be used on forklift DC voltages in that range. The SL60 is also sealed to IP 6K9K and comes with 500mm of cable and Hella’s five-year warranty.

Two routes to a clean DPF DIESEL SERVICES CHRISTCHURCH OFFERS TWO SOLUTIONS TO CLOGGED AND DIRTY DIESEL PARTICULATE FILTERS, OR DPFS he Christchurch-based specialist diesel diagnostic and repair team Diesel Services Ltd (DSL) offers ‘Enviro Exhaust NZ’, an encapsulated cleaning service for exhaust component cleaning. The cleaning machine is manufactured in Italy and is used throughout the world to provide a superior clean with verified results. The cabinet cleaner is cost effective, quick and environmentally friendly. DSL’s business manager Martin Simcock says the system can clean all types of filters for cars, buses, trucks and heavy machinery including catalysts, and Adblue systems. However the Enviro Exhaust services is primarily used to clean clogged and dirty DPFs. In most cases, cleaning DPFs will restore original performance. However, for customers wanting to replace old DPFs with new, Martin says DSL has recently added a range of new, aftermarket replacement DPFs. He says they are made in Europe and proven in use all around the world. Martin cautions that simply fitting a new DPF — or cleaning the old one using the Enviro Exhaust system — is only a temporary fix, as they are not the source of the build-up causing the restriction and poor performance. “DPFs are designed to last the life of the vehicle so there’s always a reason if they are getting clogged,” Martin says. When presented with clogged

T

or dirty DPFs, DSL’s technicians will always aim to diagnose the cause of the problem, “so you are not just cleaning it and finding it is clogged again in a couple of months,” says Martin. Martin says DSL has had the cleaner cabinet and operated the Enviro Exhaust service for a couple of years and cleaning DPFs is becoming increasingly popular with fleet operators and workshop clients. “We always recommend

restoring engines to original specification because that is how they are designed to run. Vehicle performance over time is far more than just horsepower,” he says. For more information on the Enviro Exhaust cleaning service or DSL’s extensive range of diesel services, see dsldiesel.co.nz, email admin@dsldiesel. co.nz or call 03 348 8825. DSL is a Blackfern Cooperative supplier.

RHD Silverado and Corvette coming GM FANS TO GET FACTORY RIGHT-HAND-DRIVE VERSIONS OF ICONIC AMERICAN TRUCK AND SPORTS CARS FOR THE FIRST TIME eneral Motors Specialty Vehicles (GMSV) has opened orders for a new Chevrolet Silverado variant, the LT Trail Boss. Deliveries will commence mid-year. A key differentiator between the LT Trail Boss and its Silverado LTZ Premium stablemate is a factoryfitted suspension lift-kit, which increases ride height by approximately 25mm at the front and 30mm at the rear. It also wears a mechanical rear locking differential and 18-inch painted black aluminium wheels, plus hill descent control, a heavy-duty air filter, and protective all-terrain skid plates complement the all-round off-road package. The driver receives a heated, leather-wrapped steering wheel and both front seats are heated and powered 10 ways. The vehicle will feature a 6.2-litre EcoTec3 V8 petrol engine coupled with a 10-speed automatic transmission, delivering 4.5 tonnes of towing capacity. The column-mounted gearshift selector provides space for a centre console large enough to act as a storage chest for bulky items. A remote vehicle starter system, consisting of keyless open and start, adds to convenience features. Body-coloured bumpers and a black painted bumper bar add to the off-road appeal of the LT Trail Boss, while a choice of nine paint colours allow personalisation. The LT Trail Boss comes to the Australian and New Zealand markets via GMSV’s direct line to Detroit. They are remanufactured to right-handdrive by Walkinshaw Automotive Group. The retail price for the LT Trail Boss is $119,900. GMSV New Zealand general manager Matthew Taylor is anticipating a strong demand for the LT Trail Boss. “LT Trail Boss personifies what Silverado is all about,” he says. “It’s big, it’s tough, and it comes ingrained with brand-DNA which showcases qualities of strength, power, performance, and no-nonsense work-hard

G

10

Auto Channel Issue #35 May 2021

attributes. LT Trail Boss is purpose-built, born to perform, offering rugged dependability in off-road settings when exploring on the weekend, but is also at home in urban environments.”

FACTORY FRESH CORVETTES GMSV is also bringing in the new C8 Corvette. “The Corvette is one of the world’s most recognisable sports cars and over-delivers with regards to performance expected of such a machine,” Taylor says. “It has heritage, performance and unparalleled desirability — generation after generation.” The Corvette was introduced in 1953 and this, the eighth generation, is the first to feature a midengine configuration. It is also the first Corvette available as factory-built right-hand drive. To celebrate the local launch of the new model, a special Carbon Edition will be available in Australia and New Zealand.

“Full specifications for MY22 have not yet been released globally, but we anticipate being in a position to reveal more information in the second quarter, as well as pricing for the Carbon Edition,” says Taylor. In addition to Carbon Edition, GMSV will also offer Corvette as both 2LT and 3LT models, available in coupé and convertible body styles. The retail price for the coupe will be $154,990 for the 2LT, while the 3LT with enhanced interior appointments will have a retail price of $169,990. The convertible will be an additional $15K. GMSV has elected to specify the 6.2-litre V8L with the Z51 Performance Package and Front Lift. “Overwhelming feedback is that our intended customers are performance enthusiasts; they want to have the ability to experience the C8 Corvette to its fullest potential,” says Taylor. The Z51 package includes performance dual mode exhaust, performance suspension with Magnetic Selective Ride Control, larger Brembo brakes, an electronic limited-slip differential, a front splitter, a rear fascia-mounted spoiler, extra cooling provisions, and a specific rear axle ratio. The Corvette features Magnetic Selective Ride Control that provides real-time damping that reads the road every millisecond and adjusts the suspension accordingly.

Hayman Reese: making tow bars smarter HAYMAN REESE LAUNCHES SMARTCODE TO INTEGRATE SMARTCLICK WITH VEHICLE CAN BUS SYSTEMS ayman Reese’s Smartclick was developed to give tow-bar installers a fast and simple towing wiring harness solution, taking away the need to run lengths of wire to complete an installation. Traditionally, the Smartclick system comprised a selection of two to three additional parts to be added to the base loom included with the tow bar — an ECU if the vehicle requires one; and a tail, or a seven-pin socket with a nominated length of wire; and a plug to complete everything. Now, as more vehicles manage electrics with a CAN bus on board, Hayman Reese has adapted Smartclick to work as an integrated system. Previously, the Hayman Reese Smartclick ECU did not interact with the vehicle’s electronics, simply piggy-backing off the power supply and using taillight feeds for signalling to provide a tidy solution. However, this arrangement fell prone to setting off fault codes in CAN bus–equipped vehicles, or even disabling other system components when a trailer was connected to the vehicle. Hayman Reese launched its first Smartclick CANbus plug-and-play systems in late 2019. A base loom was still included with the bar, and the ECU and tail are then chosen to complete the system. The Hayman Reese Smartclick CAN bus system

H

interface is plug and play using standard vehicle sockets, meaning no scotch locks or soldering into the vehicle’s wiring harness was required. The new ECU was designed to communicate effectively with the vehicle in the same manner as an original-equipment (OE) version. However, this was less than ideal, as the car would alert the driver when a trailer is plugged into the seven-pin plug, meaning they would need to manually override or ignore sensors on most vehicles. For all of the features to work correctly, many vehicles running CAN bus systems required the vehicles to head back to the dealership to be coded — every time a trailer was hooked up. Hayman Reese started to develop its own CAN bus Smartclick solutions to this issue that would require only one-time coding, but encountered pushback from dealers. Hayman Reese’s experience, or the perception, that aftermarket wiring looms caused issues, persuaded the company to refuse to code vehicles. Once again, Hayman Reese took up the challenge and developed its own coding solution called ‘Smartcode’. Smartcode is a handheld device for installers that plugs into a vehicle’s OBD port. It will programme the vehicle

to accept and integrate the trailer wiring as per OE installations, and turn on the correct parameters for safe towing. Smartcode is a token-based system for the installer, allowing an additional revenue stream for the install, which provides a no-surprises solution for customers, and which doesn’t compromise vehicle integrity. The handpiece is designed for towing coding only. “As its name suggests, it is very smart — in a few short minutes the vehicle is coded and ready to go,” says Hayman Reese’s Darryl Maslin. He says that the Smartcode firmware is constantly updated, and a quick download will keep the handpiece up to date. Brands that are currently supported are Ford, VW, Audi, Skoda, and Mercedes-Benz. For more information on the system, or to become an authorised Hayman Reese installer, call 0800 MY T BAR (698 227) or email info@haymanreese.co.nz.

Heavy-duty Corghis CORGHI’S EXPERTISE IN TYRE MACHINES MAKES IT THE MOST DEPENDABLE CHOICE FOR HEAVY-DUTY COMMERCIAL VEHICLE WHEELS he Corghi HD 500 uses tubeless rollers mounted to a hydraulically powered slide to fit and remove truck and bus tyres, making a virtue of its simple and robust design. The tyre sits on another powered slide to position the wheel in front of the horizontal axis turntable. The machine is fast, doesn’t require the use of levers or clamps, and will comfortably handle wheels up to 26 inches in diameter with a maximum width of 695mm, and tyre diameters up to 1400mm, weighing up to 700kg. Next up is the Corghi HD 850A tyre changer. This has a tool-carriage arm with automatic raising and rotation of the tool head, which is coordinated with movement of the clamp arm. The unit features a new hydraulic power unit that provides greater bead-breaking strength (20,000N). At the same time, the overall dimensions have been reduced to a length of less than 2m. It has the same 26-inch

T

wheel diameter capacity as the HD 500, but wheel width is up to 780mm and diameter up to 1500mm. The Corghi HD 1400 Evolution auto heavy-duty tyre changer can handle wheels of 14 to 58 inches in diameter, widths of 1470mm, tyre diameters of 2500mm, and a wheel weight of up to 1900kg. It was the first in the world to feature a hydraulic motor for operating the turntable’s gear motor, offering maximum torque at any of the turntable’s three speeds. The speed can even be adjusted to ultra slow for tyre-grooving operations. This fully automatic arm with hydraulic lifting and rotation offers levels of safety previously unavailable when handling wheels of this size. It can be operated with an optional radio kit, and features a motor start and stop feature, which provides significant energy savings when the machine is not in actual operation.

The HD 1400 is an entirely automatic tyre changer that’s suitable for mounting tyres on all types of vehicles, including trucks, agricultural machinery, deforestation machinery, and earthmoving machinery. At the top of the range is the Corghi HD 1800 Hydrus super-sized extra-heavy-duty tyre changer for earth-moving machinery — and truck wheels up to that size. This fully automatic universal tyre changer with cordless remote control will handle wheels from 14 to 60 inches with a diameter of 3m and weighing up to three tonnes. Corghi also offers the AGT Tilt, which can be installed in a van. It can handle wheels from 14 to 26 inches with a maximum tyre diameter of 1350mm. Coupled with an optional generator kit, it provides unlimited roadside or customer premises capability. For more information, see automaster.co.nz or call 0800 214 604.

Insurance industry move opposed THE COLLISION REPAIR ASSOCIATION IS WARNING AN INSURER MOVE TO SET UP ITS OWN COLLISION-REPAIR FACILITIES IN MAJOR CENTRES COULD LEAVE THOUSANDS OF CONSUMERS WITHOUT CHOICE. IT COULD ALSO LEAVE THE INDUSTRY UNDER-RESOURCED TO MANAGE THE EXPECTED TRANSITION TO EVS new business model adopted by the country’s largest insurance company — which includes NZI, State, AMI and Lumley — means that some customers may no longer have a choice of repairer. They will be required to use an IAGowned repair shop. Australian-owned IAG has announced it will open branches nationwide in the coming months, with Christchurch, Wellington, and Hamilton to join outlets in Auckland. The move is changing the conditions of its insurance policies for thousands of vehicle owners. The expansion programme means that large numbers of owners in these cities will be obliged to have their vehicles repaired through an IAGbranded ‘Repairhub’ facility. New research has shown since the adoption of the new model, IAG has dropped to become the lowest ranked insurer in the country. Neil Pritchard, general manager of the Collision Repair Association (CRA), says that the move has created a competitive imbalance in the market that will ultimately impact New Zealand consumers. He says that new industry research has shown the relationship between the panel-beating industry and IAG is at an all-time low as the multinational insurer’s overall rating the poorest of all 13 insurance companies operating here. “There are several fundamental issues that manifest when an insurer with a dominant market share operates a vertically integrated

A

14

Auto Channel Issue #35 May 2021

business model in this way. “The model reduces consumer choice and removes any natural mechanism for third-party quality control. In other words, if the insurer is paying for and implementing the repair, who is there to advocate for the consumer and have qualitycontrol oversight?” he says. Pritchard says that IAG's new Repairhub facility works by choosing the most profitable cosmetic

repairs and outsourcing the more complex structural repairs. He says that the materials and technology in the automotive industry are constantly evolving requiring an investment of up to 10 per cent of a repairer’s annual revenue in equipment and training to adapt to the change. “The collision-repair industry in New Zealand is tightly controlled by insurers. Ultimately, there is no flexibility for repairers to set their own prices,” Pritchard says. “IAG also imposes a high ‘cost of mistrust’ on panel beaters, with the administrative time required to photograph and document each stage of the repair, before seeking approval to proceed — a cost and barrier to efficiency that their own repair brand does not have to shoulder.” Pritchard says that repairers need the mix of smaller and larger structural jobs to help make the business model sustainable and to invest in business development. “By strategically removing the more lucrative work, the insurer is compromising the ability of repairers in the industry to prepare for predicted surge in the number of electric vehicles [EVs] expected over the next decade,” he says. “Already we have seen evidence of this new insurer model becoming a factor in the closure of one collisionrepair business and feedback from our membership base is that it is compromising their ability to adequately invest in training and equipment.” Pritchard says that 100 electrified vehicle models are set to arrive in showrooms by next year, each bringing with it new challenges and higher safety risks than those powered by traditional internal combustion engines. “EVs present a new set of challenges to repairers. High-voltage batteries present a risk of electric shock, and the use of complex structural materials necessitates a longer repair time, with some figures suggesting an average of four hours or 17 per cent more time per repair. “Our concern is that this insurance model is now expanding into New Zealand’s largest population centres, which is set to adversely impact thousands of consumers, preventing them from buying locally. It could leave the industry underprepared to manage structural repairs on the new EVs and other modern vehicles set to land here in the coming years,” he says.

European car specialist chooses Steiner and Fasep KELLY’S AUTOMOTIVE LEANED TOWARDS EUROPEAN WORKSHOP EQUIPMENT BUT LOOKS AREN’T EVERYTHING orthland’s European car specialists Kellyss Automotive had a natural inclination to check out European workshop equipment but it was the whole package that completed the deal. Stefan Klauss from Kellys says that the Whangarei company needed to expand and had run out of

N

space at its existing premises in Herekino Street, so it opened a new workshop just down the road. He says that it would be their ‘dialogue reception’ area, as well as their wheel-servicing and tuning area. The new space needed a tyre changer, wheel balancer, and hoist.

He explains that a European-style dialogue reception involves an underbody inspection of the vehicle with the customer as part of the vehicle induction process. This meant the lift needed to be fast and smooth. European vehicle owners expect to see quality European equipment in the workshop, Stefan says, and the Steiner lift fits the bill being fast, efficient, and good looking. “We have developed a good relationship with Treadway Equipped because they are also fast and efficient but price is also important. The price point has to be right,” he says. He says that the compact size of the Steiner Pro LT240CFPRO hoist’s columns and footplates are also a plus, as the new space is long but also quite narrow. This was Kellys first Steiner lift. Other-brand lifts are in use in the main workshop, but they are coming up for replacement. Stefan and partner Jacques Du Plessis inherited those lifts when they bought an existing workshop in 2018 and converted it to specialise in European vehicles. Their entire careers have been in European car dealerships. The present workforce of 13 specialises in VW, Audi, Skoda, Porsche, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, and Land Rover, as well as electric vehicles. The Treadway Equipped installation also included a Fasep V548 Wheel Balancer and a Steiner ST260 tyre changer. Treadway Equipped’s sales manager Loren Bill says that Steiner equipment is being well received in the market. “The quality of Steiner speaks for itself. We’re seeing it selected by dealerships and premium brands frequently,” he says.

Pure sine wave inverter delivers clean 240V power USING LARGE 240V APPLIANCES IN MOBILE HOMES, CARAVANS, AND BOATS IS EASILY ACHIEVED WITH A PROJECTA INTELLI-WAVE INVERTER etting up a caravan or mobile home to use domestic voltage appliances is made simple with Projecta’s IP2000 pure sine wave inverter. It has the grunt that high-power equipment like irons, toasters, and coffee machines demand, and it takes up to 2kW equipment like fridges and microwaves in its stride. Made from extruded aluminium, Projecta’s Intelli-Wave inverters are dust-proof, shock resistant, fully electrically isolated, and ‘equipotentially bonded’ to AS4763. In eco-mode, they have a market-leading noload current draw of only 10mA and a built-in RCD

S

switch for additional safety. The pure sine wave technology produces what Projecta calls ‘ultra clean power’, replicating a steady household mains supply, which is suitable for the most sensitive electronic equipment. They also have market-leading peak power performance. Projecta says they can perform at 200 per cent of their rated capacity for three seconds, which means that the 2kW inverter can happily run a device like a fridge that could demand 4kW at start-up. It can also run at 140 per cent (2800W) of its rated capacity for three minutes. The range is available in different power outputs — from the IP150, for charging mobile phones and other digital devices, through 300W, 600W, and 1000W units for increasingly power-hungry appliances. All units from 600W through to the topof-the-line 2kW 12V IP2000 and 24V IP2000-24 also have remote controls, as well as an LCD that displays both power usage and battery voltage. As well as two standard 240V sockets, the top-ofthe-line 2kW units also feature a built-in AC transfer switch, which allows a seamless transfer from the onboard supply to a mains supply. The IP2000 waits three seconds for the AC connection to stabilise before switching in 20 milliseconds — fast enough to avoid tripping out computers or TVs operating at the time. This function also makes it easy to operate the battery charger. They can charge at full power while the inverter powers the accessories directly. When

the mains is disconnected, the inverter seamlessly switches to the battery power source and the charger is switched off. For more on Projecta’s Intelli-Wave inverters and other battery systems, see griffithsequipment.co.nz.

Having a ‘beer’ with Parts Connection SPECIALIST AUTO PARTS SUPPLY GROUP PARTS CONNECTION IS KNOWN FOR ITS QUIRKY MARKETING INITIATIVES SO WHEN GENERAL MANAGER PAM MCNICKLE WANTED TO SHOW WHAT MAKES MEMBERSHIP SPECIAL, SHE HAD TO GET CREATIVE hat better way to get people to understand the value in the business than showing workshops and panelbeaters first hand just what is involved in getting recycled parts off a vehicle, recorded, priced and out the door to them? The ‘Have a beer with us’ idea was born, and Pam wanted to let Auckland customers know the event was happening in an attention-grabbing way. So naturally she organised the printing and packing of 1000 custom made teddy bears in boxes that looked like crates of ‘beer’ and had them delivered throughout Auckland. Who can resist cute brown bears dressed in Parts Connection Yellow ribbons

with a card attached inviting them to the event? Not many. The evening was held at Strong Parts Connection in Onehunga in late March on a beautiful autumn evening. This was not the original date they had planned due but an Auckland wide level three Covid lock down took priority even over Pam’s formidable organising powers. On the night customers were greeted and signed in at the welcome table then whisked away for the site tour. The site tour was one of the highlights of the evening. Small groups of people were lead around the site paying particular attention to some of the key stations of a dismantling operation such as the listing and testing area, vehicle drainage station, dismantling bays, mechanical and suspension department, main store area and parts racking system, dispatch, and inspection department and finally the sales call centre. Because the groups were small enough people could ask questions and be as interactive as they wanted to find out all about the operation. Once the tour had finished customers could wander around the outside area and partake in a beer tasting session run by ‘Mrs Sippy’ . They tasted four different New Zealand IPA beers while the beer guru chatted about each one, which was interesting and informative. Naturally there were games such as ‘bear pong’ where the classic drinking game had been made on a large scale, Throw the Ted which as the name suggests throwing teddy bears through holes. The highlight was unique game of Race the UBear, which involved extracting a 2m stuffed bear from the boot of a vehicle, installing it in the passenger seat with the seatbelt clipped in, then racing to the driver’s seat and putting on their seat belt, all competing for the best time. Spot prizes were awarded at the game stations and no one went home empty handed.

While some customers competed in the games for prizes, others wandered around the car display looking at various vehicles from muscle cars to sports cars, race and rally cars to classic cars. There was something there for everyone. During the evening there was live music with a great line up of classic covers sung by multitalented Parts Connection staff member Jared. The Parts Connection BBQ truck was serving classic hotdogs and Jo Bros food truck was cooking and serving mouthwatering beef and vege burgers. To satisfy everyone’s thirst a large grey fire truck bar was stocked with IPA kegs and chilled cider. Customers enjoyed meeting the different Parts Connection members and staff who were on hand to assist throughout the evening, as well as networking with each other. At the end of the night three major prizes were given away. First prize was a weekend for two in Queenstown including a Highlands Cromwell voucher valued at $2500. Second prize was a helicopter flight to Tantalus Estate for a 4-course lunch on Waiheke Island valued at $1800, and third prize was a Harvey Norman gift card valued at $500. and let’s not forget the entertaining rock/pape/ scissors challenge to take home the 2m tall UBear! “The evening was a great success, and it is something that we would look at running again in the future.” said Pam. Parts Connection has 14 branches, each specialising in a number of car makes, offering both second-hand and a range of new replacement parts. The branches are all based in Auckland and are specialists in their brands. Parts are distributed nationwide, offering an overnight service to most parts of the country. Volvo Cars pursues circular business for batteries n the future, the biggest source of materials for new electric vehicle (EV) car batteries will be old EV car batteries. In the meantime, Volvo Cars is developing a second life for used EV batteries. Volvo Cars aims for annual savings of kr1 billion and reductions of 2.5 million tonnes in carbon emissions from 2025 using circular business principles. Aiming to become ‘a circular business’ by 2040, Volvo Cars will create closed material loops for emission-heavy materials such as steel and aluminium, as well as remanufacturing, repairing, reusing, and refurbishing parts. “Volvo Cars has one of the most ambitious climate plans in the car industry, and if we are to reach our goals, we need to embrace the circular economy,” says head of global sustainability at Volvo Cars, Anders Kärrberg. “This requires us to rethink everything we do and how we do it. We are making it [sustainability] as important as safety has always been to us.”

Nissan dives into EV attitudes hen asked if they would consider buying an electric vehicle as their next car, 70 percent of European drivers say they would. The most popular reason for drivers considering the change is the environmental benefits offered by a zero-emissions vehicle (49 percent). The pan-European survey is Nissan’s most comprehensive investigation into the driving habits and charging experience of EV drivers to date. The research demonstrates there are good reasons to change to an EV and reveals many of the myths currently preventing drivers from making the switch. Nissan surveyed 7000 motorists across Europe, split evenly between EV and ICE (internal combustion engine) motorists. Initial findings uncovered that EV driver satisfaction is promisingly high, with 89 percent of EV drivers saying the switch to EV was the right decision, 74 percent feel more relaxed, and 77 percent find it smoother to drive than an ICE vehicle.

W

Switchers happy The result show 97 percent of EV drivers find the transition from ICE to EV “as expected” or “easier” which could ease other drivers’ switch to EVs. The majority (70 percent) of motorists reported

Volvo Cars already remanufactures gearboxes and engines to make better use of materials and reduce emissions. In 2020, around 40,000 parts were remanufactured, saving nearly 3000 tonnes of CO2 emissions. It aims to more than double its remanufacturing business by 2025. The company recycled 95 per cent of its production waste last year. This included 176,000 tonnes of steel, avoiding the generation of nearly 640,000 tonnes of CO2. In 2020, Volvo Cars became a member of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, the world’s leading circular economy network. Giving EV batteries a second life also contributes to a circular business. Finding uses for batteries beyond their life in cars extends the batteries’ lifecycles and

the range autonomy of their EV is better than expected before purchase. Yet 58 percent of ICE owners still say they are not considering an EV because of a perceived low driving range. This demonstrates the persistence of the myth that range is an issue, when charging overnight means, unlike ICE cars, they can start each day with ‘a full tank’. “With this new research, we’re seeing firsthand that European drivers are embracing electrification. Just as they are continuing to explore what electric vehicles have to offer, we are committed to showing them the vast benefits of electric mobility and how easy it actually is to make the switch,” said Arnaud Charpentier, region vice president, product strategy and pricing, Nissan AMIEO. “From low running costs to surprising performance, electric cars like the Nissan Leaf have transformed the everyday driving experience for the better.” Despite the differing perceptions in the EV and ICE camps, the importance of sustainability remains clear across the board: nearly 85 percent of all drivers surveyed place value on being environmentally friendly. The survey portrays electric driving as enjoyable and desirable — 89 percent of European EV drivers are happy with their experience, and 78 percent agree it is better than expected.

Climate control Research found nearly half (49 percent) of ICE drivers are considering the switch as electric vehicles are environmentally friendly, with 40

creates new revenue streams and cost savings. BatteryLoop, for example, plans to use batteries from electrified Volvo cars in a solar-powered system. Starting in April, the system will power charging stations for electrified cars and electric bikes at Swedish hygiene and health company Essity’s business centre outside of Gothenburg. In a similar project, Volvo Cars; Comsys AB, a Swedish cleantech company; and Fortum, a European energy company, aim to use batteries to increase supply flexibility at one of Fortum’s hydropower facilities. Battery packs from Volvo plug-in hybrid cars will store energy to provide ‘fast-balancing’ services to meet constantly changing fluctuations in demand.

percent of EV drivers having switched for the same reason. Further highlighting the importance of eco-friendly mobility, 33 percent of EV drivers made the decision due to the zero-emissions nature of electric vehicles. The prospect of low running costs is tempting 31 percent of ICE drivers who are considering the switch to an EV. Reassuringly, after having made the switch 83 percent of EV drivers admit their EV has lower running costs than expected. Nissan has also launched an online fuel saving calculator to help motorists calculate how much switching to a Leaf could save them over time. Nissan reckons that over the past decade Leaf owners have prevented more than 2.5 million tonnes of CO2 from being emitted into the atmosphere globally. Nissan aims to become carbon neutral by 2050 across products and operations.

Freight forwarders riding the tiger’s tail NEW ZEALAND’S HEAD START ON THE GLOBAL COVID RECOVERY IS BEING HAMPERED BY THE LONG TAIL OF GLOBAL LOGISTICS ISSUES, WHICH WILL CONTINUE TO PLAGUE US he stuttering restart of global manufacturing, and shipping, and fluctuating demand in other big markets will continue to have a whiplash effect on the general freight market in Australasia, according to Famous Pacific Shipping’s New Zealand country manager, Debbie McKenzie. She says “a perfect storm” of currents have come together in the wake of Covid to drive some shipping costs up 700 to 800 per cent. That kind of price increase is, on the face of it, hard to understand. It would suggest something of the order of a doubling of demand for limited shipping resources, yet the world is far from operating back at full throttle, while the shipping capacity that operated pre Covid is, at least in theory, still there. Debbie reports that shipping companies say their capacity is coming back online, and yet when you try to book it’s just not there; not in the time frames we were used to.

T

LONGER LEAD TIMES Her advice to stock managers or importers is to get their orders in as early as possible — up to weeks earlier than they have in the past. That should avoid stock shortfalls and give them the best chance of operating with minimal disruption. One reason for the capacity constraints, she says, is that the world expected a more severe economic decline. Shipping movements were interrupted due to the Covid constraints and capacity was moth-balled. That meant that the unexpected resurgence of demand, especially in

Australasia, quickly resulted in a backlog. And while shipping capacity might be recovering, manufacturing is still out of sync. She gives the example of pump manufacturers in Taiwan. While Taiwan has been also largely Covid-free, those manufacturers are still unable to supply product because they can’t get seals or other components made in Japan. Even when ships make it to port, they can’t always disembark cargo, due to port delays around the world. She says a lot of ports have been grappling with a host of issues, such as the well-publicised challenges slowing throughput at the Ports of Auckland. That in turn has led to a

global shortage of containers. “It’s rarely just one thing that causes a problem,” says Debbie. “As I say, it’s a perfect storm.” In case you were wondering, a lack of air freight has not rebounded on sea freight as much as you might expect. Debbie says that airlines have maintained much of their freight capacity even though the passenger market collapsed.

AMAZING RECOVERY However, the lack of overseas travel has meant that more New Zealanders are spending locally, which has, for example, seen the local new car market surge. The strength of the economic rebound in New Zealand and Australia has been “amazing” and has confounded predictions. Debbie says the freight-forwarding industry had previously expected to see imports return to normal levels in March, April, and May. “Yet so far we haven’t seen any significant changes since Chinese New Year [when production always drops]. People are now saying it [the return to normal] may be the end of the year, but some commentary predicts 2022 or 2023.”

IMPORTED CARS BY YEAR OF MANUFACTURE (2009–2018)

Given other factors now coming into play, she isn’t predicting an improvement “for the foreseeable future”. Another looming impact for Pacific trade is the current acceleration of demand in the US, as the success of the vaccine roll-out there is reenergising business. US demand for product from Asia has increased sharply and that is likely to soak up trans-Pacific capacity for some time. Some shipping lines have pulled ships away from the Australasian services, which actually has a comparatively massive impact here. “The new normal appears to be delays getting container space,” says Debbie. “What used to be 10 days is now three to four weeks. “Congestion at ports is anything from 10 to 14 days. It is clear that importing stock is going to take significantly longer than it used to, so I’d say add 20 to 30 days to lead times to still see consistent turnover.”

VEHICLE IMPORTS Famous Pacific Shipping is best known in New Zealand for offering a bespoke service managing vehicle imports, classic cars, and caravans, for private individuals. She says most special-vehicle imports happen that way here. The company has been in this part of the business in New Zealand since 2008 after spotting a gap in the market. Many people are rightfully wary of all of the various administrative hoops that different agencies say must be jumped through to import a vehicle. Famous Pacific Shipping offers a one-stop shop for piloting customers through the unfamiliar waters of ‘stevedoring’, ‘escrow’, and ‘carnets’ — whatever they are. “The level of personal investment in this kind of importation is high and it makes our job a lot more satisfying,” says Debbie. The shipping company has 24 staff in Auckland and a team based in Fiji. Debbie says the most obvious trend in vehicle imports since 2008 has been the strong increase in US car imports. She agrees that Beach Hop has been a strong contributor to that trend. Many people who have attended the show have then decided they wanted a similar car, and they have been available via the US’s West Coast. The company has for several years worked closely with Beach Hop organiser Noddy Watts, who, with his partner, has run tours to the US. Their customers on the tours will often look for or find cars to bring back to New Zealand, and that is invariably arranged through Famous Pacific Shipping.

THE NUMBERS

American muscle car imports have always been strong. Australian … are generally top-end vehicles, as the Australian home market values them highly Debbie says that American muscle car imports have always been strong. Australian muscle car imports are much fewer in number and are generally top-end vehicles, as the Australian home market also values them highly. The US home market for muscle cars is pretty strong now, as they were always in limited supply. However, other cars from the ’50s and ’60s are still available and are comparatively cheap. They are not considered anything particularly special, simply gasguzzling dinosaurs in a home market dominated by modern pickup trucks. That truck fashion has, in recent times, seen demand for older pickup trucks strengthen there. American pickup trucks of all vintages, including a lot of modern versions, had also become top of the hit list here before Covid, Debbie says.

Looking more closely at the classics, over the period 2008 to 2018 — before Covid messed things up — New Zealand imported 7157 cars that were more than 30 years old, well ahead of the 1167 ‘classic’ cars exported in the same period. On the import front, 408 were British, 434 European, 212 Japanese, and a whopping 5744 American. If we look at the year of manufacture, the import figures show a pronounced peak — actually two peaks — which correspond to two US car heydays: the mid ’50s and the late ’60s muscle car era. The correlation here with Beach Hop is particularly strong. If we assume the muscle car era was roughly 1965 to 1973, we can see that 41 per cent more cars were imported in that era than in the eight-year periods either side. The most popular imports overall were Chevrolet Impalas (604), Ford Mustangs (592), Chev Bel Airs (389), Chev Camaros (284), and Ford Galaxies (275). The most popular years of manufacture for imports were 1968, 1966, and 1965. Imports for the eight years after 1973 pretty much fell off a cliff. Understandably — that’s when the fuel crisis hit and the US struggled to make frugal cars that could still carry those hideous 5mph bumpers. The market for the private importation of cars has also taken a hit here in the past year, due to Covid, as people could no longer travel to the US to find or inspect cars as they had in the past. However, Famous Pacific Shipping’s bespoke approach found a solution to this too. Debbie says the company has relationships with a number of suppliers on the ground in the US that understand the New Zealand market and the constraints imposed by the New Zealand Transport Agency. They have become expert at finding the kinds of original-condition cars that Kiwis want to bring in for restoration here. Debbie says they now have people available who can travel to and assess vehicles of interest, or find what someone might be looking for. And they can arrange purchase on behalf of Kiwis. This kind of service can even avoid the many pitfalls associated with private imports that can still catch out people who have inspected vehicles in person. BLACKFERN CO-OPERATIVE LAUNCHES NEW WEB-BASED TOOLS TO MANAGE BUSINESS RISKS e’re bringing it all together in one easy-to-use system,” says Blackfern Cooperative director Roger Castleton. “To reduce the effort needed by workshops, and minimise their risk exposure, we’re creating a suite of tools that enable them to perform credit checks, and print pre-filled templates, directly from our website.” Poor paying customers affect businesses’ cash flow, which will negatively impact their own credit scores. Performing credit checks on customers helps to avoid bad debt. “Just pop in your customer’s name, date of birth, and address, and within seconds you’ll get a credit report that you can download and print,” explains Roger. You’ll see a headline score out of 1000 plus information on credit defaults, court judgements, fines, and insolvencies. “For a few seconds of your time, and a small charge, can you afford not to credit check?” asks Roger. Roger says web-based templates work better than saved documents on a work PC. “You don’t run any risk of accidentally deleting or overwriting them. The best bit though is that we fill them out for you, saving you time and effort.”

“W

Simply upload your company logo, enter a few details and the templates will be pre-filled, with a letterhead form. “A great example is the personal guarantee template, used when providing credit. Just enter the debtor’s personal or business name, hit download, and you’ll get a PDF with your letterhead and all the key terms filled in. Spending just a few seconds using the new Blackfern tools significantly reduces your risk exposure,” says Roger.

POWER PLANTS LOOKING FOR BIG PERFORMANCE RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX? WE TAKE A LOOK AT SOME OF THE MOST POWERFUL CRATE ENGINES OFFERED BY THE BIG THREE ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT MANUFACTURERS e live in a wonderful time when it comes to performance engines. While the world goes on about electric vehicles (EVs), the big factory players in the V8 world continue to offer up some ridiculously powerful engine combinations that will arrive on your doorstep ready to drop in. All three seem to understand the importance of heritage, with packages aimed specifically at older vehicles. All three manufacturer performance divisions also offer addon packages that make the swaps easy, from plug-in looms to the correct transmissions. The only real challenges will be deciding exactly how much you want to spend and how fast you really want to go.

W

FORD PERFORMANCE COYOTE 5.0 GEN III The only non–push rodder to make our list —unsurprisingly, it’s also the only one you’ll be able to rev well into the 7000rpm range. An alloy block, this is the third generation of 5.0-litre Coyote and features a long list of improvements from the first two generations. It features hypereutectic aluminium pistons, sintered steel rods, and a forged crank. The heads are reported to be very close in performance numbers to the GT350 CNC-ported head and are also a stronger casting than previous. It also features variable valve timing cams and dual fuel, which means it has both direct injection and port injection, which is why it can have a ludicrous 12.0:1 compression and still run on premium pump gas. One will set you back a mere US$9.5K.

GODZILLA Showing up in F-250 trucks, the 7.3-litre Godzilla is Ford’s new pushrod V8. Featuring 4.220-inch bore and 3.976-inch stroke, big port heads, 2.1-/1.6-inch valves, and with a cam of 297/293, it makes 430hp and 475lb·ft of torque at 4000rpm. While that horsepower won’t excite many, the torque is impressive, and the fact that it has compact push-rod architecture means that it will become a favourite for conversions over the bulky Coyote, and no doubt we’ll start seeing aftermarket support to up those numbers. Currently offered for just over US$8K.

THE BOSS It’s hard to beat the classics, and when it comes to Ford motors the Boss 460 will always be the boss. This is the biggest capacity Windsor that Ford offers, and interestingly enough uses a list of off-the-shelf brand-name parts. The cast-iron block has a 9.5-inch deck height, the rotating assembly consists of a Scat crank and rods to give a stroke of 4.25 inches, while the pistons are Mahle and fill the 4.15-inch bores. The heads are what is known as their ‘Z head’, with 2.02-inch intake and 1.60-inch exhaust stainless valves and PAC conical-style valve springs. Although not supplied with a manifold or carb, it’s advertised to make 575hp and 575lb·ft when partnered with a Edelbrock Super Victor intake, Holley 850cfm carb, and long-tube headers. List price is US$11K.

GM PERFORMANCE BIG POWER Chev’s most powerful offering in a crate is the Supercharged LT5 ZR1. Released in 2018, the ZR1 comes straight from the engine bay of the ZR1 Corvette and is based on the LT4 alloy block, which features cross-bolted six-bolt main caps, a bore of 4.06 inches, and a stroke of 3.62 inches. Given it makes a massive 755hp and 715lb·ft of torque, with 600lb·ft from only 2200rpm, the LT5 has a few upgrades compared with the LT4, including forged pistons, a compression ratio of 10.1:1, and new stronger head castings. The LT5 heads have titanium valves, (2.130 intake / 1.590 exhaust). Pushing out 9psi of boost is a 2.6-litre Eaton R2650 TVS supercharger. The downside to this engine is the fact it’s dry sumped. Cost is just shy of US$19K for the long block.

THE RAT KING GM’s answer to an out-and-out race engine, the ZZ572-720R Deluxe is not a street engine — but hey, that’s never stopped anyone before. It’s built around GM’s latest generation bowtie 10.200-inch-tall deck block with 4.560-inch bores and a 4.375inch stroke. The rotating assembly is all forged, with a 4340 crank, H-beam rods, and forged aluminium pistons with plasma moly rings. Its 12.1 compression calls for 110 octane (no pump gas round here). The heads are rectangular port with 310cc intake ports and 118cc exhaust ports. The valves are stainless 2.250 intake / 1.880 exhaust, and you’ll also find roller rockers and a roller cam. The big block is fully assembled for just over US$16K. You just bolt on the supplied 1150cfm Dominator and go racing, pass after pass.

WET LS7 One of the latest offerings from Chevrolet Performance is the wet-sump LS427/570. It’s based on the LS7 but does away with the (pesky for packaging) semi–dry sump system and replaces it with a traditional wet sump suited to an F-body chassis. It’s an LS7 block with the cross-bolted, six-bolt mains, but makes a tad more power than the run-of-themill LS7 — 65hp to be exact. This is thanks to CNC-ported heads, a higher lift roller cam, new intake manifold, new valve springs, new titanium 2.2-inch intake valves, and sodiumfilled 1.6-inch exhaust valves. The rotating assembly features a forged steel crank, hypereutectic pistons, and forged titanium rods. Bore and stroke measures 4.125x4.000 inches, with compression at 11.0:1. The package makes the most of any naturally aspirated GM crate offering to date — 570hp and 540lb·ft.

29

MOPAR HELLIPHANT Want to bolt in 1000hp and 950lb·ft? Yes, 1000hp! Mopar’s most ridiculous crate option, dubbed the ‘Helliphant’, is your only OEMoffered option. The moniker might give you a clue as to its cubic capacity — it’s named after the original Hemi 427, which was dubbed the ‘Elephant engine’. Unlike the original, the four-bolt mains block is alloy. It also comes with, as expected, a forged rotating assembly, H-beam rods, 9.5:1 compression, and a massive three-litre twin screw blower. The combination is not offered in any production car that Chrysler sells and never will be. It’s not Chrysler’s cheapest offering either, costing you around US$30K for a long block, but an original equipment manufacturer–offered 1000hp crate engine is something pretty damn special, right?!

HELLCRATE REDEYE No one does crate motors like Chrysler does, and while the others scramble to catch up, the big C just keeps adding more power to its already powerful line-up. The 807hp Hellcrate Redeye is the most powerful production V8 ever offered. Still at 6200cc, the internals have been revised with a new 90.9mm forged crank, forged pistons and rods, lighter gun-drilled camshaft, new bearings, valve springs, rocker tips, and sump configuration. The redline sits at a higher 6500rpm, and the supercharger has been increased to 2.7 litres and 14.5psi of boost. Chrysler offers it in both manual and automatic configurations for just over US$20K.

SRT 6.4 If you’re looking for a Hemi that won’t break the bank but could still blow your diff to pieces, the SRT 6.4 is the one. It’s built around a Gen III iron block, which features a 9.25 deck height, four-bolt mains, and 4.46-inch bore spacings. Also offered in smaller capacity, for the 6.4, however, bore is 4.09 inches, stroke 3.72 inches, and compression ratio 10.9:1. It also comes with a forged crank, unlike the smaller capacity versions. The heads are Hemi (of course) and feature 2.1-inch intake valves, and 1.6-inch exhaust valves. Springs are beehive. Like all Mopar crates, it is offered complete, from water pump to flywheel, for just over US$10K.

WATER SEPARATION

OEM

Fuel water separators — how do they work? DIESEL FUEL, WHICH IS LESS REFINED THAN PETROL, NATURALLY CONTAINS MORE IMPURITIES THAN REGULAR UNLEADED PETROL. ALL IMPURITIES CONTRIBUTE TO WEAR, INCOMPLETE COMBUSTION, AND PARTICLE BUILD-UP, SO FILTRATION IS A MUST, ESPECIALLY FOR HARD-WORKING VEHICLES OR THOSE USING FUEL OF QUESTIONABLE QUALITY standard original equipment manufacturer (OEM) fuel filter does the basic job of filtering a large amount of fuel contaminants before they reach the engine, but can prove ineffective against water and other particulates. A typical OEM fuel filter is rated to 4–6μm of filtration. The filters lack a visual water trap and may not be accessible enough to drain, meaning that the

A

operator won’t know of any water contamination until it’s too late.

WATER CONTAMINATION When emulsified in fuel, water can lead to corrosion of metal components, as well as fostering the growth of microbial contaminants. If not dealt with, it can damage both the engine and fuel system.

A helping hand THE AUTOMASTER SINGLE-POST CAR HOIST IS THE PERFECT SOLUTION ou don’t need an extra pair of hands or a new workshop — transforming your workspace is easy with an AM-7251 Automaster Mobile Single Post Car Hoist. Specifically designed for workshops where space is at a premium, it can be moved easily once unloaded by just one person. Revolutionise your workspace with a single-post hoist that will lift to a full height of 1755mm, just like a conventional two-post lift. With a 2500kg capacity, it’s got serious grunt and comes with the peace of mind of being European CE Safety Certified — there’s also a single-point safety release. The four swivel lifting arms lock automatically, stay in place during operation, and are easily adjusted. The AM-7251 also comes with a stackable rubber pad with 1.5-, three-, and six-inch extension adaptors, making it flexible depending on the job in hand. Double-screw adjustable lift pads and a 12-piece liftpad adaptor kit for vans and 4x4s make this Automaster hoist fit for purpose for any job.

A fuel water separator should be the first line of defence for fuel from your vehicle’s fuel tank. Typical filtration media used in fuel water separators are either hydrophobic barrier media, such as silicone-treated cellulose, or hydrophilic depth coalescing media, such as glass micro-fibre. The fuel flows through the treated media surface of the separator unit, while water is trapped at its repellent surface. Water, which is denser than fuel, forms droplets that then fall to the bottom of the trap. Any solid contaminants left in the waterless fuel are trapped by the filter element of the separator unit.

FITMENT The engine bay usually offers enough space for installing a fuel water separator in a location that allows viewing and draining of the water trap, and in-line with the OEM fuel filter. The Ryco fuel water separator comes equipped with a 10μm (nominal at 99 per cent efficiency) rated fuel filter. This allows the filter to catch 99 per cent of the microbial bugs, dirt, or other particulate matter down to a size of 10μm. Installing a fuel water separator before the OEM filter captures all but the smallest contaminants, effectively lightening the OEM filter’s workload, allowing it to operate more efficiently. Installing it after the OEM filter can’t prevent OEM filter blockage, and the OEM filter will then need replacing. See rycofilters.com.au, or follow facebook.com/rycofilters or instagram.com/ rycofilters for more info on Ryco products.

If you want the added convenience of doing away with trailing wires cluttering your workshop, the AM-7251DC Automaster Mobile Single-Post Car Hoist comes with all the innovative features of the AM-7251, but is operated by a powerful 24V DC battery pack. Designed for ease of use, the hoist can handle big jobs with little effort. The AM-7251 retails for $5250, and the AM7251DC for $5495. Both have a one-year warranty. See automaster.co.nz for more details.

Joining the Kiwi fleet THINKING OF IMPORTING A CAR? WE TALK TO LOCAL EXPERTS TO GET THE SKINNY ON VEHICLE COMPLIANCE AND THE VINING PROCESS HERE IN NEW ZEALAND aybe you’ve seen a car listed locally as uncomplied, the existing rego has lapsed, or you’re a little more adventurous and you’ve found something overseas you’d like to import? Either way, to be registered for New Zealand roads, said vehicle will need to go through the vehicle compliance process to obtain a New Zealand VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) tag. It’s a process that can be scary for those having never been through it before, not helped by the number of horror stories floating around about those too-good-to-be-true, so-called steal-of-the-century buys turning into nightmare purchases. But the process is very black and white, and hopefully after reading this, you too will see it isn’t really that daunting, and as long as you’ve got a good safe car, and the paper trail to go with it, then getting it on the road is nothing to worry about.

M

CHASING PAPER The first step when planning to obtain a VIN for a car or when looking at a vehicle that has not yet got a VIN, is to check the paper trail. “When it comes to complying a vehicle, the most important first step is ensuring you have all the paper trail’s original documents. If you are

34

Auto Channel Issue #35 May 2021

buying a car that is uncompiled in New Zealand, make sure you get a receipt or a paper trail from the original owner on its international bill of sale, pink slip, title, or dereg. document, to the importer and then again, a receipt to you! The key first step is — if you are unsure whether your new potential purchase has all the right documents, make sure you call your compliance centre and ask. Do your homework before buying a car,” states The Autochecker’s Bronson Dunne. It’s worth stressing the point that having only copies of the documents will not suffice; they must be the originals. If a car doesn’t have the original documents with it, walk away — fast. Main bits of information needed: • the vehicle’s overseas registration papers (certificate of title / pink slip) • evidence of vehicle ownership (purchase receipt, bill of sale) • evidence that you are the importer of the vehicle (i.e., import entry documentation in your name, shipping papers or bill of lading) • evidence of your New Zealand residency (driver’s licence).

MAKING IT CLICK! BRONSON DUNNE, THE AUTOCHECKER “Pre-1955 original vehicles do not need seatbelts, unless requested by an LVV Certifier on a modified car. “1955–1979: if the seat belt anchors are OE and the seatbelts are OE and in good condition, the seatbelts can remain. If aftermarket belts are fitted, they must be three-point belts. If the third anchor point is not OE, then these will require LVV Certification. For pillarless cars you can use an aftermarket lap belt to OE anchors and obtain a B Pillar Exemption from your LVVTA [Low Volume Vehicle Technical Association] Certifier. “1979–2003: Unless the car has a driver’s airbag, you are required to fit dual-sensitive seatbelts or ELR [emergency locking retractor] belts. If there is an airbag in the car, then you can run the OE single-sensitive seatbelts with an ‘SSBELTSOK’ tag fitted by the compliance agent.”

ENTERING THE SYSTEM Before any inspection can take place, the vehicle must be assigned a VIN. Technically, applying the number is ‘VINing’ a vehicle, and the rest of the procedure is ‘compliance’, but it’s more common for the whole procedure to be referred to as ‘VINing’. “A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is the NZTA [New Zealand Transport Authority] identifier for that vehicle. It is normally etched on the rear window and attached to the car on a VIN tag and is entered in the NZTA database along with the details of the vehicle. This tag should never be tampered with or removed, as it is a legal identifier for that vehicle,” explains Noel McMillin of Nostalgia Motors. Until then, all an imported vehicle will have is an identification number given to it by MAF as it came off the wharf. If a vehicle is deemed to be in damaged condition by MAF, it will have been

WHAT IF THE OLD VIN TAG IS MISSING? NOEL MCMILLIN, NOSTALGIA MOTORS “If you have a vehicle previously registered in New Zealand that has no VIN tag, you will need to provide evidence to NZTA proving the vehicle or various parts are authentic. The Vintage Car Club of New Zealand is often helpful here and often provides what is called an ‘Authenticity Report’. Other types of evidence include a statutory declaration from a previous owner, pictures in magazines, previous registration papers, or original ownership papers.”

new floor pans, it may require a repair cert. If this is required, the process would be to get a VIN issued and fitted at an approved shop that you intend to do the complete VIN inspection with at a later date. This way, the 20-day limit does not apply. Once the vehicle has had a VIN issued, you need to contact a repair certifier (there is an online list). They will then carry out an inspection before any repair work starts and advise you on the process to move forward. Once the repair cert has been issued and any other work the vehicle requires is carried out, it can be presented for a VIN inspection.” The vehicle will be lifted on a hoist to check for movement in suspension and steering components. All four tyres are inspected for unusual wear patterns and any signs of rubbing. Aftermarket wheels don’t cause any concern as long as the sizing fits within the WOF guidelines, they don’t rub on anything, and no wheel spacers are used. Next up, the hoist is raised to allow the inspector full access to the underside of the vehicle. Starting from the rear, the inspector looks for any signs of rust and damage, as well as the condition of items such as shocks, brake hoses, driveshaft universals, seat-belt anchorages, engine mounts, and steering/

suspension bushes. The next stage is checking the car’s brakes. With all four wheels removed, the front discs and pads are checked for thickness, as are the rear drums. Russell Lowe of The Toy Shed says, “The idea is to present the vehicle for inspection with the best possible chance of getting a pass first time round. This is one of the most common issues that will fail a VIN inspection on an older car, so unless the brakes have been recently rebuilt we would, if required, machine the discs/drums, fit new shoes/ pads, wheels, cylinders, and brake hoses as deemed necessary. We have an in-house brake machine to test the brakes, so we can supply a declaration that can be presented when the car goes for a VIN

showing what work has been carried out and who did the work.” Another important thing to remember is, if the wheels on the vehicle have lock nuts, then it’s essential to provide the correct tool for removing them. Failure to do so will result in a failed inspection, as the brakes are unable to be fully inspected. With the wheels off, other components such as body mounts, steering joints, and coil springs can also be inspected.

TESTING TIME Following the visual inspection, it’s then time to put everything to the test. The car is driven up onto the brake-testing machine. First the front wheels, then

NOT ALL ARE CREATED EQUAL RUSSELL LOWE, THE TOY SHED “The biggest problem with buying a modified car from the USA is there are no rules at all controlling how any repairs or modifications are carried out (no cert or WOF required). As a workshop specialising in older American cars, we get to see lots of horrendous repairs and mods — crazy stuff like a ’55 Chev pickup we are doing at the moment that has had a fuel tank fitted that was too big to fit between the chassis rails, so they have cut large sections out of the chassis to make the fuel tank fit! Also as an example are suspension modifications that have steering universals that bind and contact the engine and have huge bump-steer issues that result in large investments of cash needed to rectify it and to be able pass the Low Volume Cert system. You would have all seen on American TV shows ‘it runs and drives’, with no consideration given to safety.”

the rear wheels, then the handbrake are tested. Then the lights, head/tail and indicators, along with the horn are tested. The common failures in these tests are apparently caused by people not changing the headlights from right facing to left facing, or people purchasing cheap lights that they think are left facing but turn out not to be. These must be changed before a car can be compiled. Obviously, if the car you purchase is right-hand drive, you shouldn’t have a problem, as in theory it will have come from a country that drives on the left-hand side of the road. The focus of the headlights is also checked, as it would be for a WOF. The Autochecker’s Bronson Dunne’s top five most common failures are: “Headlights not working, headlights aiming the wrong way, excessive steering-box play, horn not working, and dodgy brake-light switches.” If your vehicle is younger than 20 years, there are also a few other standards that it will have to pass that older vehicles are exempt from, as Bronson continues: “Basically a 20-year or older ‘classic vehicle’ does not require a few key items that a newer vehicle does; i.e., there is no emission/gas testing, does not need to be frontalimpact compliant, and can retain the OE [original equipment] lap belts, as long as they are not aftermarket.”

the vehicle remains, and the parts are fitted, at the compliance centre. The smart option, as Russell Lowe from The Toy Shed explains, is to have the certification sorted before undergoing compliance: “When we first check over the vehicle pre VIN, we would advise the owner at this stage if it may require a repair cert or Low Volume Cert. If either type of cert is required, we would take the vehicle to have a VIN issued and affixed to the vehicle, as this is required before the cert process can be started.” By doing it this way, you are not locked into a 20-day limit, which would be nearly impossible to meet.

OTHER THINGS TO CONSIDER If the vehicle you imported or purchased has been modified in any way it will require Low Volume Vehicle (LVV) Certification. One trap that many can fall into is that, from the time of the VIN inspection, you only have 20 working days to make changes and get it rechecked. If you do not make the required repairs in this time frame, the car will need another inspection, resulting in more cost to you, the vehicle owner. Especially with older cars, problems can arise when you need to source hard-to-obtain parts that can’t be found and fitted to the car within that period. The only way around the 20-day time frame is if

37

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE? FLO ORLANDEA, CANTERBURY VEHICLE COMPLIANCE “The duration of the inspection process for a classic/vintage differs from car to car but not by much. The stripping process can take quite a bit of time, especially when dealing with a restored vehicle or a vehicle with a high-end finish. Altogether, there are several hours of work assigned to a vehicle. The vehicle must be presented in a clean state and running order, to be complete as if undergoing a WOF inspection, have enough fuel in it, and definitely not a flat battery. Although the VIN and compliance process can easily be completed within a day, the process will be lengthy if a repair cert or LVVTA Certification is required. Most of the classics can arrive with quite a bit of rust hidden in places, or if they have been flagged at the border for rust or damage. Those vehicles will have to be inspected by a repair certifier that will oversee the repair process before issuing a repair certificate to prove that the vehicle has been repaired to the required standard.”

SUMMARY Don’t necessarily shy away from buying a vehicle without a VIN, unless you aren’t sure about the quality of the vehicle or it doesn’t have the required paperwork, as Flo Orlandea of Canterbury Vehicle Compliance states: “Buying a vehicle without a VIN can raise questions sometimes, but if there is a trail link of documents to prove legal entitlement and original documents to prove previous registration in any country, as per [the]VIRM [Vehicle Inspection Requirements Manual], that should not be an issue to get that vehicle through a compliance inspection.” Flo also brings up another good point: “Vehicles that require any special permits must be registered on the importer’s name and they will have to stay on their

38

“As a workshop specialising in older American cars, we get to see lots of horrendous repairs and mods” name for a period of time that can be max four years — i.e., LHD permit [left-hand drive] or SIV permit [special interest vehicles].” So make sure that, if your vehicle has a special permit, it’s the importer that you are buying it off, or at least talk to the importer first and know that they are trustworthy. When it comes to getting a VIN, you will have to get them to the compliance centre to sign documentation and provide identification, and the same again when you get the vehicle’s registration. If there’s a

chance you may not be able to get the importer to the compliance centre, you might end up in a sticky situation. Overall, the key is to make sure you do your homework, know what you are buying, and absolutely have all the necessary documentation to ensure the process runs smoothly. Happy hunting. Fuchs evolves continuously to meet the market FUCHS LUBRICANTS HAS INTRODUCED ADDITIONAL PACK SIZES TO BETTER MATCH SERVICING NEEDS ew Zealand’s broad vehicle parc means aftermarket suppliers who fine-tune their product offerings to better match varied demands will gain a competitive advantage in this fast-moving market. Fuchs Lubricants recognises the importance of the right pack size, and the company is demonstrating its responsiveness by adding additional packaging sizes. As a number of vehicle models call for more than five-litre fills, Fuchs has recently introduced new seven-litre and 10-litre pack sizes, making it easier to match different sump capacities at competitive prices. Fuchs has introduced the new packs across a selection of its Titan vehicle lubricants range. Five Fuchs engine oils are now available in 10-litre packs and seven are available in seven-litre packs. Fuchs says its vehicle lubricant range is ‘Australian-made with German technology that pays back’, and this move is adding greater flexibility to its core reliability for the Australasian car parc.

N

Fuchs’ Beresfield, Newcastle, NSW plant

Its key product, Titan GT1 Flex 23 SAE 5W-30, is suitable for more than three million cars in the Australia and New Zealand car parcs. Combining ACEA C2 and C3 in one product, Titan GT1 Flex 23 SAE 5W-30 is universally applicable for both diesel and petrol vehicles. It carries OEM approvals from a comprehensive list of the world’s leading carmakers, including Mercedes-Benz and BMW. Titan GT1 Flex 23 SAE 5W-30 also covers numerous petrol and diesel models across a broad range of Toyotas, such as Toyota Landcruiser, Prado, HiAce, RAV4, and Hilux, as well as many other vehicles calling for a petrol SN specification. Fuchs has a history in this region that spans 100 years. It is one of only a handful of lubricant brands that still manufactures locally. Fuchs remains committed to production in this part of the world, with two world-class plants and laboratories in Australia, and is now the sole lubricants company manufacturing and testing lubricants, coolants, greases, and additives there.

The latest automotive products Why grind when you can replace? According to Clutch Industries’ research, 4.5 hours of hoist time is wasted due to flywheel grinding, on top of an average $70 cost for this service, plus delivery. Previously, flywheel replacements were only available as second-hand units from wreckers or original equipment manufacturer (OEM) units, which were often not stocked locally and cost several times the price of the clutch kit. A replacement flywheel from Clutch Industries saves hoist time; avoids issues from poor grinding like shudder, noise, and slipping; and comes with a two-year or 40,000km warranty, all for a price similar to a grind. Step up to paradise IF IT’S YOUR DREAM TO USE YOUR MECHANICAL AND PEOPLE SKILLS WHILE LIVING A TOP-QUALITY LIFESTYLE IN ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SPOTS IN THE COUNTRY, THIS IS THE ROLE FOR YOU he Akaroa Motor Garage on the beautiful Banks Peninsula is looking for a workshop foreman to lead the team of three mechanics that keeps this iconic resort town mobile. Owners Clint Beatson and Nina Wright bought the garage and service station (serving the South Island’s own NPD fuels) in Akaroa’s main street two years ago, but the foreman who has led the workshop team for 40 years is now retiring. Clint says the workshop is a thriving business as a WOF Inspection Organisation, an AA road service contractor, a Husquvarna agency, and a Bridgestone tyre shop. It promises endless variety in general mechanical engineering, looking after the locals’ and the large number of holiday home owners’ vehicles, boats, tractors, and other equipment. “We are investing in the business as we go and we make sure we are geared to meet the local demand.” Clint says the right candidate will have a trade qualification, WOF authority, broad mechanical experience, and ideally some experience leading a team as a foreman, or as a 2IC wanting to step up. Being the right fit is also important, being positive and friendly, and willing to be part of the community. “In a seasonal town you have nothing if you do not have your community’s support,” he says. “We really depend on having good relationships with everybody so we work hard to deliver the best service, and we take nothing for granted.”

T

That means being a good communicator is essential to ensure nothing slips between the cracks, that jobs are allocated and completed on time, and that they are properly tracked. The foreman will also be the gatekeeper on quality. A desire to make the most of being in one of the most beautiful spots in the country would also be an asset. This opportunity would really be a waste if you didn’t appreciate a great place to bring up kids with good schools, a superb quality of life, stunning views, a great harbour, great coffee, delicious restaurants, an award-winning butcher and cheese factory, and a cinema, all just an hour from the big smoke of Christchurch. If this sounds like you, and you want to add extra quality of life to your career, call Nina directly to discuss on 027 321 2548, or Clint on 021 439 834.
