and Napa branches and their customers. He says the new distribution centre is a record investment for the group here, demonstrating the business’s confidence in the future of New Zealand aftermarket parts supply. “The new distribution centre recognises the strong performance record of the Repco and Napa teams. They have earned the ability for us to make this level of investment.” Maddren says service — in particular, speed to customer — is a key metric and the tech in the new distribution centre should enable his operations to make “market leading enhancements”. “In addition to customer outcomes, we’re also creating a state-of-the-art, safe, sustainable

Everywhere you look at car news these days, it’s all about the conversion to electric vehicles (EVs). Surveys, particularly in the UK and Europe, which have set end dates for the production of internal-combustion engine cars, show more and more people are warming to the idea. Now Ford is launching an electric version of its top-selling F-150 pickup in the good ole US of A. If that heartland vehicle is going electric, its customers will surely follow. Here, there doesn’t seem the same urgency, yet, even though it would save us the $4 billion a year we are handing over to oil companies, money that would be much better in our pockets — and the planet would thank us. Let’s not forget that over 70 per cent of our generation is from renewables, unlike in Europe, making the green benefits especially strong here. Apparently, we’d need less than 20 per cent more generation capacity to supply the electricity needed — and that’s already been consented, just waiting for demand. The cost of new EVs is prohibitively high for many people, but an Auckland Regional Public Health paper, which lauded the health benefits of clean-emission EVs, argued that subsidising EVs for fleet buyers — not just the government’s own vehicle fleet — would be worthwhile. It would replace petrol cars being used every day, and, as fleets turn over vehicles quickly, it would soon pump many more of them into the second-hand market. That’s a policy idea that has yet to be picked up, but we are approaching a turning point.

environment for our people,” he says. The goal of faster delivery was accelerated by the recent pandemic, which drove exponential growth in digital business, reinforcing the decision to move to next-generation automation in distribution. Several years in the planning with experts TMX, the new centre will feature the first Schaefer system of its kind in New Zealand, with the aim of delivering improved safety, efficiency, and resilience in GPC NZ’s supply chain. Schaefer’s innovative system and software platforms will optimise “goods-to-person flow”, which translates as smoother, faster, and less cumbersome logistical processes across the nation. National design and build company Calder Stewart is working closely with GPC NZ to bring its plans to life. Calder Stewart’s project director, Mark Weaver, says the project will leverage his company’s experience. “The new distribution centre will be one of the most highly technical automated distribution centres in New Zealand,” he explains.
The project will utilise sustainable design and construction solutions, including a major solar panel installation, electric forklifts, and energy controls. GPC has also targeted a 35-per-cent reduction in water consumption through collecting rainwater for toilets and landscaping. Maddren expects the new facility to provide the capacity and capability needed for GPC’s next 30 years of growth. GPC NZ has more than 110 branches throughout the country, employing 1200 people. It is backed by Genuine Parts Company (GPC) USA and, as a business unit within GPC Asia Pacific, it stocks more than 500,000 products.

FAMOUS RETRACTA
Classic Retracta hose reel
Introducing Macnaught MACNAUGHT IS SO MUCH BIGGER THAN ITS FAMOUS RETRACTA HOSE REELS or more than 70 years, Macnaught has been designing and manufacturing high-quality fluid and lubrication equipment for industrial and automotive industries. Since the company’s inception in Turrella, Sydney, in 1948, the Macnaught name has become synonymous with the design and manufacture of high-quality fluid and lubrication equipment for agricultural, automotive, transport, aviation, marine, manufacturing, and mining industries. Today, Macnaught’s range of hose reels; flow pumps; industrial meters; and accessories for grease, oil, and fuel applications is distributed in more than 60 countries, and New Zealand is a key regional market of its growing business. Macnaught’s global success has been based on innovation in all aspects of its business, from design to manufacturing and distribution. Macnaught’s patent-approved products are testament to its design logic, which has set it apart from its competitors and provided confidence to customers. Many products are backed by the Macnaught’s 10-year mechanical warranty and guaranteed parts availability. With 2500 product lines on offer, Macnaught’s local sales and distribution network, supported by third-party logistics in New Zealand, is a key part of its value proposition to its customers. Macnaught’s New Zealand national business development manager, Brad Pailthorpe, highlights

that the company’s products are developed in Australia, and its product support is based in this region. Local sales representation in New Zealand also makes the company responsive to local market needs, with products geared to local market conditions. He says developing robust products that stand up to the rigours of daily use in hard-working workshops in this region and out in the field is part of the brand’s DNA. This innovation-by-design approach is represented in Macnaught’s latest award-winning design offering to the automotive industry: the battery-operated pump, or BOP. The patentapproved BOP is a portable, rechargeable, 18V battery–operated pump platform designed to improve workshop efficiency and reduce fatigue, with the flick of a switch. The on-demand flow nozzle allows full control over fluid delivery. Available in 20-litre and 60-litre variants, with multiple fluid compatibility, the BOP provides its customers with easier, safer, and more efficient work practices. The modular BOP powerhead can be transferred across multiple BOP pump stems and multiple fluids to reduce set-up costs. The portable BOP powerhead eliminates the need for multiple expensive powered pumps, enabling the user to fit out a work area with BOP pump stems in the fluid types required, with a single BOP powerhead
A new range of the iconic Retracta reels has also been developed. For decades now, the original Retracta poly reel has had an enviable worldwide reputation for performance, reliability, and safety. This industry-leading range now incorporates multiple reel constructions, specifically designed and engineered for different industrial applications and environments. The Retracta poly reels have also been reimagined and updated. The new Retracta R3 range now includes the world-first, patented Retracta Adjustable Control Return (RACR) system, which is supplied on all R3-P+ models. The RACR system gives the users more control by allowing them to set the speed of return to suit their individual requirements. To complement its premium range, Macnaught distributes the price-competitive Lubemate by Macnaught range. All Lubemate products are subjected to the same stringent testing and qualityassurance processes as Macnaught’s other product ranges, and they have been designed based on Macnaught’s deep experience with fuel-, fluid-, and lubrication-handling technologies. They also carry product warranties of up to two years. Lubemate products include manual, air-, and battery-powered grease guns and pumps, as well as a wide range of accessories, including quickrelease couplers, swivels, valves, nipples, extension hoses, and drum trolleys. Lubemate oil-handling equipment includes manual and air-operated oil pumps, electrical pumps, metered and standard oil guns, and waste-oil evacuation and handling equipment. There are also fuel pumps and nozzles, AdBlue equipment, and metal and high-density plastic hose reels. To find out more about Macnaught, see nz.macnaught.com.

Speed’s online portal adds more speed, and accuracy EUROPEAN AND AMERICAN CAR PARTS SUPPLIER SPEED LAUNCHES MYSPEED he Tauranga-based and Kiwi-owned European car parts importer believes its new online portal will deliver a step change in accurate parts supply. Speed sales manager Matt Smith says that several years’ work and his main focus for the past eight months is now going live in the form of mySpeed, an online portal that makes parts selection and delivery as easy as online shopping — but without the hassle of having to send the wrong items back. In most cases, after simply entering a vehicle’s registration VIN, you can select the part just by scrolling over the exploded vehicle diagrams served up to you, by selecting from parts lists, or simply by entering the part number if you already have it — but these aren’t even the key benefits of the system. “Where our platform differs from others is that it pulls the relevant parts information straight from the vehicle manufacturers themselves, in Europe. It doesn’t use a dataset created by the aftermarket, which most other parts suppliers use, which means we get the right part first time,” says Matt. Matt cites the example of Volvo brakes. Four
T
different sets of brakes are offered on some models, so unless you know which option was fitted — and only the manufacturer knows for sure — buying brake pads at other outlets will be guesswork. “You know what happens,” says Matt. “You end up with two or three sets of pads that you have to return.” Not any more. Working from the manufacturer’s data for that exact vehicle means you can get the right OEM part or the right specific aftermarket option from Speed, every time. Matt says the new platform is designed to let mechanical repair customers look up their own parts using genuine part numbers or by searching using the VIN or rego. Panel customers will get the same service, but at the moment it is still in development. Searches show customers the parts’ cost prices, retail prices, and stock availability in real time. Customers choose the closest distribution centre, build a shopping basket, and order the parts then and there. Speed, which has built a solid reputation over its 13 years of supplying parts for European and late-model American cars, has more than 106,000

Lift adapts to workshop needs AUTOMASTER PUTS A LOT OF LIFTS IN TIGHT SPACES — AND TIGHT BUDGETS he Automaster AM-6246R two-post lift allows workshops with constrained floor space or headroom to get creative, offering wide or narrow, or high and low configurations. The posts can be installed symmetrically, as usual, or offset in an asymmetric configuration. This configuration should allow some car doors to be opened further while occupying a narrower lift footprint. When the columns are installed in the symmetric configuration, there is more drivethrough width between the columns. This 4500kg lift also saves space by locating its motor out of the way, high up on the front of the column. This location also means that the lift can be installed close to a wall. There is also a high and a low setting for the top cross bar, which has a safety cut-off depending on available roof height. Its standard height is 3862mm, or 3762mm on low setting. An optional high version of the lift can be set at 4162mm. The minimum lift pad height is only 88mm, giving access under lowered cars. Power supply can also be 230V or 380V/3ph.
T
A variety of colour combinations available as standard To cater for a wide range of vehicles and offset operation, the lift features three-stage telescoping front arms, two-stage rear arms, and double screw-up feet with 80mm 4x4 height extensions. To protect vehicles, protective rubber pads are mounted to the carriage and rubber column guards are also fitted. Supplied complete with remote control and tool trays attached to each arm, this lift represents strong value for money. Operation is a simple single-button press to go up and a lock button to rest the lift on the nearest locks. Lowering time is 30–40 seconds. Automaster’s Gary Cotterell says that Automaster specified only the best quality components — including balance cables, oil pumps, cylinders, and electric motors — based on its experience of New Zealand workshop’s focus on robust reliability and value for money. Basic construction strength is a vital part of the mix, so the column design incorporates special double S-bends to increase
column strength, so the lift is fully compliant with European CE safety certification. “This lift will provide reliable, durable performance even in the most demanding environments,” says Gary. With only 100mm of concrete necessary for safe installation, this lift can be installed in almost any shop with a standard compliant floor thickness. Automaster lifts are supplied in a range of colours, including light blue with grey arms, dark blue with blue arms and yellow tool trays, and dark grey with light grey arms. Automaster stocks a complete inventory of parts for the equipment, ensuring support for years ahead. This lift, complete with two-year warranty, retails for $4650 plus GST. Delivery and installation costs depend on location, so call Automaster to discuss. For more information, see automaster.co.nz or call 0800 214 604.

Ford New Zealand joins Drive Electric FORD NEW ZEALAND PUTS ITS SHOULDER TO THE WHEEL OF AN ORGANISATION AIMING TO SPEED UP THE ELECTRIFICATION OF NEW ZEALAND’S VEHICLE FLEET ord New Zealand has become a member of Drive Electric, a New Zealand non-profit organisation that has been working to make electric-vehicle (EV) ownership in New Zealand mainstream. Worldwide, Ford has chosen a path to a zero-emissions future by investing more than US$22 billion to electrify many of its vehicles, including iconic nameplates. Ford is aiming to be a carbon-neutral company by 2050. Mark Gilbert, chair of Drive Electric says, “We warmly welcome Ford to Drive Electric, joining a number of organisations committed to accelerating the uptake of e-mobility in New Zealand. Ford has already committed to sell only electric passenger vehicles in Europe by 2030, a demonstration of their global leadership on electrification. We are excited about seeing how Ford can contribute to New Zealand’s zeroemissions transport future.” Ford already has a line-up of EVs, including the Mustang Mach E and F150 Hybrid, and also recently revealed a prototype All Electric F-150 Lightning.
F
LOCAL APPETITE The managing director of Ford New Zealand,
10
Auto Channel Issue #36 June 2021
Simon Rutherford, says that locally the company has been encouraged by initial demand for the recently introduced Transit PHEV, which means it is also looking forward to introducing the Escape Plug-In Hybrid this year and the all-electric E-Transit in 2022. The E-Transit is a full-size Transit Cargo with DC charging and a 350km range. “As a volume brand, we see our products and technology as a key enabler of decarbonising the transport sector through effective and targeted renewal of New Zealand’s aging vehicle fleet,” Simon says. “As the consumer appetite for EVs grows, capacity increases, infrastructure and accessibility improve, we aim to further expand our EV line-up as Ford has done in many markets around the world. “Joining Drive Electric helps us to contribute further to the industry-wide efforts and discussions to find a pragmatic, customer-focused, and scalable pathway to the wider adoption of new EVs in New Zealand.”
BEST SELLER GOES ALL-ELECTRIC Ford says its all-electric F-150 Lightning, launched at Ford’s world headquarters in Dearborn in May, is the company’s smartest, most innovative truck yet. The F-150 is the US’s best-selling vehicle and it has been
the best-selling truck in the US for 44 years. The new F-150 Lighting is a powerhouse that delivers a targeted 563hp (420kW) and 775lb·ft (1050Nm) of torque — the most torque of any F-150 ever. Being battery powered, it also has a high-tech front trunk, or ‘frunk’, and the ability to power the owner’s home if needed. Another feature called ‘Pro Power Onboard’ powers jobsites or campsites. It bristles with features that improve over time via over-the-air software updates. The FordPass app provides seamless access to charging stations and remote vehicle controls, and a BlueCruise option offers true hands-free driving on the highway. It is powered by dual in-board motors and with standard 4x4. It has a military-grade aluminium alloy body, a new independent rear suspension, and an all-new frame using the strongest steel ever put in an F-150 frame supports a maximum 2000-pound payload and up to 10,000-pound towing capacity. “We’re not here to make an electric truck for the few — Ford is committed to building one that solves real problems for real people,” says Kumar Galhotra, Ford president, Americas and International Markets Group, Ford Motor Company. “F-150 Lightning delivers everything we’ve said electric vehicles can offer, plus the capability expected from a Built Ford Tough truck — not just near-instant torque but powerful towing and hauling customers can depend on.” The F-150 Lightning will be built by Ford-UAW workers at the Ford Rouge Complex, Ford’s most advanced plant. Production of the F-150 Lightning began in the third quarter of this year at Ford Rouge’s all new Electric Vehicle Center.

Lease Solutions gives workshops peace of mind LEASING GIVES WORKSHOPS ACCESS TO THE LATEST EQUIPMENT AND TECHNOLOGY, IMPROVING EFFICIENCY WITHOUT THE HIGH CAPITAL COST ease Solutions (NZ) Ltd is a New Zealand–familyowned-and-operated business that started leasing equipment in 2001, so this year marks 20 years in the business. Lease Solutions owner John Jenkins says that the company will consider leasing almost anything that a workshop needs or wants. “We specialise in mainly automotive equipment and have out on lease everything from hoists, tyre changers, wheel balancers, alignment machines, column lifts for trucks, commercial mobile truck tyre changers and balancers [to] hot water washers, compressors, brake machines, air con, and ATF [automatic transmission fluid] exchangers. We even have a couple of forklifts in the inventory. We work on the motto of ‘you need it, we lease it’.” John, who is also a major shareholder, with Todd Jenkins, in Century Distributors, also buys equipment from other suppliers or importers. He understands that leasing is about servicing the customer’s needs and wants.

John started leasing equipment, as he saw it as another way of putting equipment into the market while minimising the risk to the end user. It gave customers an opportunity to try new things without a big capital outlay. “When you lease equipment, the customer should be getting a return on it from day one,” he says. “We have helped many customers establish new opportunities, and grow their business at the same time. “Our customer base is varied from one-man mobile operations right through to some of the biggest dealerships throughout New Zealand. Everyone has various reasons for wanting to lease equipment instead of purchasing it. “For some it means they know the exact costs on each vehicle bay, month in and month out. It reduces variables, lumpy cash flow, and reduces the risk of surprises — maybe the need to replace old gear suddenly — which makes budgeting easier. “We have other customers leasing equipment because it starts paying for itself from day one with
John Jenkins with lease equipment ready to roll out no capital outlay or financing required.” He also says that some customers lease equipment to avoid dropping a lot of money on some gear before knowing returns, minimising the risk of trying something new. Some also choose to lease because of the tax benefits of leasing equipment. It also makes the path to upgrading equipment much easier, without worrying about residual values on out-of-date equipment. John says leasing is “pretty simple”. The standard contract is 36 months at one set monthly fee. The lease company pays all maintenance and certification costs. After that, the customer can extend month by month, return the goods, or upgrade into newer equipment. Shorter term leases are available but at different prices. 4Terrain Heavy-Duty clutch kit
Emerging clutch trends
4Terrain Heavy-Duty SG Iron grooved pressure plate
CLUTCH INDUSTRIES IS CELEBRATING 70 YEARS OF DESIGNING, ENGINEERING, AND MANUFACTURING CLUTCH SYSTEMS AND GIVES US SOME INSIGHT ON WHERE THIS BUSINESS IS GOING ustralian specialist aftermarket clutch manufacturer Clutch Industries has been building Aussie-tough clutch components and assemblies for seven decades. Sales and marketing manager Justin Batten says that, over this time, the market has changed from rebuilding covers and discs to allinclusive kits consisting of cover assembly, clutch disc, clutch release bearing or concentric slave cylinder, flywheel, spigot bearing, and alignment tool. He says the two growth areas for Clutch Industries are the 4x4 specialised clutch-kit range, which is going from strength to strength, and the new replacement flywheel range, which offers a faster turnaround and additional margins to workshop clutch repairs. Clutch Industries’ most popular 4x4 clutch range is 4Terrain Heavy Duty, which offers increased torque capacity and clutch life. 4T Heavy-Duty cover assemblies have an increased clamp load, typically 20 per cent greater than OE specification. A patented spheroidal graphite iron (SG Iron) grooved pressure plate is also claimed to offer further torque capacity gains. The groove increases the mean effective radius of the pressure plate, which increases the surface area of the clutch while also assisting in heat removal. The 4T Heavy-Duty clutch disc also features a 25 per cent thicker friction material for longer life, backed up by a three-year or 50,000km warranty, Justin says this is the best clutch warranty available in New Zealand. A 4Terrain Heavy-Duty clutch kit comes complete with release bearing, spigot bearing, and clutch-aligning tool. “The 4Terrain Heavy-Duty clutch system is built to endure the rugged demands of hard-working vehicles and is a logical choice for anyone needing to replace a worn-out clutch in heavy use, or for operators demanding strength and reliability,” Justin says. Clutch Industries’ other growth category is its revolutionary replacement flywheel range. Traditionally, when a clutch kit is replaced, the flywheel must be ground to provide a clean, flat

surface. Clutch Industries has surveyed workshops, and on average 4.5 hours of hoist time is wasted due to this process. In addition, the trade price for a grind is on average $70 plus the delivery cost. Justin says that its new single-mass flywheel range could revolutionise the clutch-replacement process. The key is offering a range of OE-style replacement flywheels at an affordable price. Previously, says Justin, if a workshop wanted to replace a flywheel, it would often find that OEM items were not stocked locally, and the price could be several times more than the price of the clutch kit. The other option is to purchase a secondhand unit from a wrecker. That would also need machining, which incurs the same risks, costs, and time commitments as the standard repair. Clutch Industries senior product manager David Talbot says, “This flywheel range will change the way a clutch replacement is done in the same way as replacement rotors did with brakes. Eventually, as the range extends, replacing the flywheel will be a common practice for every clutch replacement.” As well as faster installation time, David says that the cost can be comparable to a grind — the cost is known and the flywheel, at OEM dimensions, offers ‘as new’ tolerances and pressures. It also eliminates issues risks related to poor grinding such as shudder, noise, and slipping, and it offers customers ‘new instead of old’. The Clutch Industries range currently covers around 50 per cent of the common single-mass clutch kits sold, and the range is expanded regularly. It is available in major Repco or Napa Auto Store branches, meaning that you’re able to buy in one place everything you need to get the clutch job done. The flywheels are made to OE specifications in quality-assured factories from 1045-grade steel, exceeding Australian standards, and include ring gear. Clutch Industries’ replacement flywheels come with a two-year or 40,000km warranty. For more information, contact your local Repco or Napa Auto Parts branch.

Adding a Fasep wheel aligner rounded out the company’s pre-delivery service centre. Dealership manager Richard Nessling said four-wheel-drives, especially Hiluxes, are going well for the team and so are the accessories that customers choose to personalise those vehicles with.
Those accessories are fitted as part of the predelivery service. Richard says that an increasing number of customers want to fit different wheel sets, so getting a wheel aligner to ensure that different wheel options were set up correctly brought quality control of that service in-house. Wanganui Toyota has matched the new wheel aligner with a Steiner wheel balancer and a Fasep tyre changer with more features suited to faster handling of larger wheel sizes. Treadway Equipped was on-site for installation and training, ensuring that the Wanganui Toyota team was up and running quickly and effectively. “That’s just one of the added services you get with Treadway Equipped,” says Treadway’s sales manager Loren Bill.

Extended warranty for Delkor EFB and AGM batteries R&J BATTERIES’ EXTENDED WARRANTY RUNS INTO THE PAST AS WELL AS THE FUTURE xclusive distributor of Delkor batteries in New Zealand and Australia R&J Batteries is now offering extended warranties on the Delkor absorbent glass mat (AGM) and its enhanced flooded batteries (EFB) in idle-stop-start (ISS) passenger vehicles. The warranty period on Delkor EFB batteries has been increased from 18 months to 24 months and has been doubled on Delkor AGM batteries, from 18 months to 36 months. This new warranty is applicable immediately. It is also being applied retrospectively on all Delkor EFB and AGM batteries. This means that Delkor EFB batteries bought up to two years ago, as well as AGM batteries bought up to three years ago, are now back in warranty. The warranty period for both EFB and AGM batteries in non-ISS passenger vehicle applications
E
remains unchanged at 36 months. The general manager of R&J Batteries New Zealand, Warrik Skulve, says the increase in warranty periods is evidence of the quality built into Delkor batteries and that it is not a recent addition. “It is also evidence of the commitment both Clarios [Delkor manufacturer] and R&J Batteries have in ensuring Delkor batteries provide the best in quality and value for customers,” he says. Delkor batteries are built with PowerFrame grid technology, designed to minimise corrosion and optimise energy flow. The manufacturers say, in comparison with other grid designs in real-world fleet testing, that the PowerFrame grid is nearly three times more corrosion resistant, making it more durable than other grid designs, which can help to minimise premature battery failure. The same comparison showed it produced more than
60 per cent superior electrical flow for better connectivity. The company also claims that the manufacturing of PowerFrame grids uses 20 per cent less energy and produces 20 per cent fewer greenhouse gases than other manufacturing methods. ISS technology has significantly increased the demands placed on vehicle batteries, but consumer expectations regarding battery service life have not changed. R&J Batteries’ move to increase the warranty shows that Clarios’ investment in developing its PowerFrame grid technology has paid off in real-world improvements in reliability and performance. The complete Delkor automotive battery range, which includes AGM, EFB, and calcium batteries, is available at R&J Batteries and distributors across New Zealand.

F-150 wins fans for electric SUVs orty-eight hours after Ford unveiled the F-150 Lightning — Ford’s all-electric version of the bestselling ‘car’ in the US — it had received 44,500 orders, according to the Twitter page of company president and CEO Jim Farley. Deliveries of the Ford F-150 Lightning in the US are scheduled to begin in our autumn in 2022. Ford says that more than 2300 electric vehicle (EV)–certified dealers across the US will sell the all-electric F-150 in four series and two battery options. F-150 Lightning reservations in the US cost just US$100. Ford has said that the F-150 Lightning Electric is quicker than the original F-150 Lightning, a turn-

of-the-century performance truck, which could accelerate from zero to 60mph in 5.8 seconds. The Lightning has full-width light bars front and rear that makes the EV distinctive. The area between the front lights has a closed-off grille with a textured surface in three different configurations. The interior is familiar but the zero-emissions version is available with a 15.5-inch SYNC 4A touchscreen infotainment system, which places frequently used functions at the top of the screen. Needless to say, over-the-air software updates are supported in the F-150 Lightning, and they are called ‘Ford Power-Up’. The Ford F150 Lightning features two motors that power all four wheels, making 4×4 standard. A mid-four-second figure is the targeted 0–100kph acceleration time for the extendedrange battery model. “It’s quicker than a Raptor,” says Farley. Jim Baumbick, vice-president, enterprise product line management, says that the F-150 EV is purpose-built to do work: “It has got a long-standing history and people know what they get. That vehicle is going to show up and be able to do the work that

you expect out of it.” Ford may initially source EV batteries externally from companies such as LG Chem and SK Innovation, but may shift to internal manufacturing in the long term. The Ford F150 Lightning might have the potential to become the best-selling electric pickup truck in the US, suggests Cox Automotive’s research. According to the study, 59 per cent of consumers find the F-150 Lightning more appealing than the GMC Hummer EV, the Rivian R1T, and the Tesla Cybertruck. Cox Automotive conducted an online survey of 155 prospective customers of pickup trucks, 60 of who wanted to buy an electric pickup. CarsDirect has reported that Ford dealers that wish to sell the brand’s upcoming EVs in the US will have to pay to become eligible. According to a letter that the company sent its dealers, which CarsDirect accessed, retailers have to invest US$35K to get what Ford bills as the “next-generation” EV certification. The website does not list what the investment is for, but it could cover the cost of installing the EV chargers and the workshop equipment to service EVs.
BMW X5 hybrid gets green tyres MW Group is the first automotive manufacturer worldwide to equip its cars with tyres using certified sustainable natural rubber and rayon, a wood-based material used to strengthen the tyres. The company will source 22-inch tyres in the first instance exclusively from Pirelli and, from August of this year, will use them in the BMW X5 xDrive45e Plugin-Hybrid. About six million small farmers worldwide are responsible for over 80 per cent of the world’s natural rubber cultivation. In the ‘rubber belt’ across the tropics, they run farms of between one and two hectares. Agreeing uniform social and environmental growing conditions with these millions of small individual farms is a major challenge. However, certification of the rubber plantations and the complex supply chain for natural rubber and rayon in these tyres takes place in accordance with the strict standards of the independent Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). As an independent organisation, FSC has developed an internationally recognised and demanding certification standard in recent years that is used worldwide for environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial, and economically viable management of the forests. “As a premium manufacturer, we aspire to lead the way in sustainability and take responsibility,” says BMW board member Dr Andreas Wendt. “The use of tyres made of certified natural rubber is a pioneering achievement for our industry. In this way, we are
B
helping preserve biodiversity and forests to counteract climate change.” The new 22-inch P Zero tyre is the world’s first tyre to receive the coveted FSC label. Giovanni Tronchetti Provera, Pirelli’s senior vice president for sustainability and future mobility, says the tyre demonstrates Pirelli’s own commitment to pursuing sustainability: “We continue to invest in sustainable growth for our planet, aware that this is also essential for the future of our businesses.” In 2019, the BMW Group joined forces with tyre manufacturers, NGOs, rubber producers and consumers to create the Global Platform for Sustainable Natural Rubber (GPSNR). Small farmers are also represented in this initiative. The BMW Group has completed full lifecycle CO2 certification for the BMW X5 xDrive45e — from raw material procurement, through the supply chain, production and use phase, all the way to recycling. If charged during the use phase with the average European electricity mix, this gives it an advantage of around 40 per cent over the BMW X5 xDrive40i. If charged with green power (as in New Zealand), the advantage is around 70 per cent. The electric range amounts to 77–88km (Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure [WLTP]).
New EV motor 10 per cent better
eal-world efficiency testing of Saietta Group’s ground-breaking AFT 140 electric motor has shown that the technology can dramatically improve the driving range of lightweight electric vehicles (EVs). The tests, which were led and overseen by Dutch engineering consultancy New Electric, saw two Renault Twizy demonstrator vehicles go head-to-head on public roads in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The first Twizy was a standard Renault model while the second was fitted with Saietta’s AFT 140 electric motor. All other systems and components were left untouched. The testing took place across two days in a wide range of weather, temperature, and traffic conditions, on varying road surfaces. The engineering team at New Electric concluded that the Saietta AFT 140 Twizy had on average at least a 10 per cent increased efficiency gain over the standard Renault Twizy. The findings open new opportunities in electrifying two-, three-, and fourwheel lightweight vehicles, offering more power or an enhanced real-world driving range. It improves the appeal of zero-emission motorbikes, mopeds, and quadricycles such as the Twizy — used primarily in town and city centres. “We are absolutely delighted that these independent tests have shown the technical capabilities of our AFT 140 electric motor, proving the significant improvement the technology can make to applications in the real-world today,” says Saietta Group chief executive Wicher Kist. “Internally, we always knew how transformational our axial flux technology is, but for it to be validated by a respected and neutral engineering powerhouse like New Electric is proof to the wider industry
R
that Saietta Group is leading the way in this mobility field. To boost a battery electric vehicle driving range by 10 per cent through simply swapping the electric motor is highly impressive.” The test team also concluded that Saietta’s AFT 140 motor performs exceptionally well during low speeds and constant stop/start conditions, making the technology ideal for inner-city mobility, and that it was adept in converting kinetic energy back into the battery pack during braking. The fully sealed AFT 140, designed for volume production, is the first liquid-cooled axial flux motor from Saietta to go into production. It is optimised for mid-power motorbikes and last-mile delivery vehicles.

Small on the outside, big on the inside he boom in online shopping is also driving a boom in efficient last-mile delivery vehicle design. Citroën has launched a commercial version of its all-electric two-seater Ami. The My Ami Cargo offers a 140kg, 400-litre payload and is designed as a last-mile delivery option for urban areas. It provides a 75km range and can be fully charged from a standard socket in three hours. The van, which is 2.41m long, 1.39m wide, and 1.52m tall, is equipped with a partition between driver and cargo area, a modular shelf that can hold up to 40kg, a two-way adjustable floor that can be raised and locked, and independent closed storage to accommodate valuable items.
T
A steel tubular structure provides the My Ami Cargo with improved safety when compared with two- or three-wheeled last-mile solutions, says Citroën, and a 7.2m turning circle helps provide a high level of inner-city manoeuvrability. For this commercial version, the passenger seat has been replaced with a seven-part cargo module. The cargo floor can be raised and locked vertically, so as not to obstruct the cargo zone, or lowered to floor level, which allows the user to carry objects up to 1.2m in length. Cargo retainers are provided to secure fragile items. A folding table and secure smartphone storage also feature in the cabin. My Ami Cargo will be available to order in France from June 2021. Laurence Hansen, director of Citroën strategy and product, says, “It’s a vehicle that provides a concrete solution for last-mile delivery, particularly of small packages, the volume of which has increased exponentially in recent months. This offer completes Citroën’s utility-vehicle range, and each model now offers an electric version.”
Will the government ban new petrol cars? he New Zealand Government has confirmed it is considering banning internal-combustion engine (ICE) vehicles by 2050 as one of a range of options to make the country carbon neutral by 2050. That would be going a few steps further than the ban of importing ICE vehicles, which the Climate Change Commission has recommended should occur by 2035. The ban would be a sweeping, all-encompassing ban covering all ICE vehicles on New Zealand roads. It is one of four pathways under investigation. Each pathway ties in public transport, cycleways, and other alternatives to driving. Transport minister Michael Wood said achieving

the goal called for a mature conversation, with an eye on a shared future, even if reaching a total consensus was beyond reach. “The transport sector currently produces 47 per cent of New Zealand’s CO2 emissions, and between 1990 and 2018 domestic transport emissions increased by 90 per cent,” he says. The report laid out paths to meet the emissionreduction targets, but they all required big changes in the coming decades. “There will be some hard choices to make, but it’s obvious we can’t continue with business as usual,” Wood says. According to Stuff, one of the government’s
most ambitious pathways plots a 57 per cent drop in the use of light vehicles by 2035, with 27 per cent of the national fleet being either hybrid or fully electric by the same point. The country’s bus fleet would require a ninefold increase in customers, which would require big changes to improve its attractiveness. That is possible if enough buses enable passengers to complete their journeys faster than going by car. “When it comes to addressing the climate crisis, cutting emissions from transport will be vital,” added the Minister of Climate Change, James Shaw. “But if we make smart decisions now then we can create a low-carbon future for transport and put our communities on the path to net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.” The Ministry of Transport is taking public submissions on transport plans until 25 June.
Next: smart cop cars NC Automotive sees the next generation of police and first-responder vehicles becoming integrated command centres featuring augmented reality, drone surveillance, and robotic device control. The UK-based software company believes police and first-responder vehicles are set to undergo a technology revolution. Drawing on the trends in consumer vehicles, and taking the latest applications from mobile-phone platforms, the company is already in discussion with forces and conversion specialists as it integrates new systems into a car’s existing infrastructure. “There is now a shift towards exploring technology, including remote-control functionality, the relaying of remote surveillance footage to a car’s dashboard, and even augmented reality,” says Philip Handschin, technical consultant at VNC Automotive. “However, all this functionality needs to remain intuitive and easily integrated with the large-format touchscreens that are becoming commonplace in today’s vehicles.” With over a decade’s experience in passenger vehicle systems, and its work in approximately 35 million vehicles worldwide, VNC Automotive is well versed in programming entertainment, navigation, and comfort-control systems. This knowledge is now proving invaluable when it comes to law enforcement and first-responder vehicle conversions. “We can tap into the systems that OEMs build into cars, utilising large-format touchscreens and the existing hardware for communication and connectivity, but add functionality that empowers

EVs gather around government By Mark Gilbert n April, the Minister of Transport, Michael Wood, hosted Drive Electric members in the Grand Hall at Parliament. He was joined by parliamentarians from Labour, National, and the Greens, as well as the Minister for Climate Change, James Shaw. New electric vehicle (EV) models from Hyundai, Audi, and Tesla were parked outside the Beehive. It was a proud moment, seeing the future of transport come to the capital. In his address, Minister Wood indicated a strong stance from the government towards a cleaner fleet and that we could expect future announcements. It also appears that the Minister of Transport remains fiercely committed to setting a CO2 emissions target of 105g/km by 2025. Overseas, this figure has already been achieved. In fact, the EU met the 105g target in 2020. The European target has now been revised down to 95g CO2/km, and by 2025 it will probably be closer to 75–80g CO2/km. So this begs the question: if the

police and first responders to allow them to work more effectively and make better-informed decisions,” says Handschin. “The benefits that augmented reality can provide are obvious when considering navigation, call status, and database information. It also means the driver need not take their eye off the road, and can make decisions with fewer distractions.” This includes technologies like automatic number-plate recognition (ANPR), where the instantaneous notification of illegal and stolen vehicles and banned drivers allows action to be taken quickly and effectively, removing issues from roads. With the emergence of drones and advanced robotics, it isn’t too much of a stretch to see how video and data from units operating in dangerous environments can be relayed to vehicles and allow police, paramedics, and even firefighters the chance to react accordingly. The company is also looking into the integration of wearable tech covering biometrics for first responders who often carry a lot of heavy gear for personal security and incident management. With so much technology in each vehicle, their function moves beyond transport and they effectively become intelligence-gathering hubs — passing valuable, first-hand data back to a central command centre and allowing the coordination of teams and other services.
industry can achieve this overseas, why can this not be done in New Zealand? It’s no coincidence that with these stricter targets in place in European markets, often alongside consumer incentives, EV penetration is accelerating. The UK auto market saw plugin EVs take a 13.9 per cent share in March 2021, nearly double the 7.3 per cent share of March 2020. Some British industry commentators are predicting the full year 2021 plug-in share will reach close to 20 per cent. This is good news for New Zealand too, as it shows automakers are producing right-hand-drive cars in volume. In Norway, the world’s leading market for EVs, the plug-in EV market share hit 84.9 per cent in March 2021. This is up from 75.2 per cent in March 2020. The combustion vehicle share of the market fell to under 10 per cent and is on a rapid decline towards zero per cent of market share. Consumers should be taking careful note of the shifts in policy at home and the trends in the uptake of EV technology globally. The risk, of course, is that buying a new combustion engine tomorrow is an investment in a technology that will become obsolete. This happens, just as music streaming replaced the CD, which replaced the cassette. As we look ahead, it’s not only the types of cars we drive that will change but also the idea

of car ownership. Representatives from carsharing businesses such as CityHop, Mevo, and Zilch were present at the parliamentary meeting. These services provide an excellent opportunity to circumvent vehicle ownership. Ride sharing and alternative forms of mobility such as e-bikes and scooters are a big part of our transport future, especially as we see increased density in our cities and more people living in apartment buildings, potentially without car parks. Finally, during the meeting at Parliament we also had a video presentation from Tesla’s global chair Robyn Denholm, who is based in Australia. Denholm spoke about how New Zealand is perceived as a leader for renewable energy and that is a strong foundation for a transition to an EV-based fleet. She noted that this will enable New Zealand to become energy independent as a country over time. Tesla’s chair also spoke passionately about the co-benefits of an EV fleet, and specifically on improvements in air quality. Around 250 New Zealanders die every year from air pollution caused by transport — a statistic Robyn called our second road toll. The transition to an electric fleet should therefore tout the health as well as the environmental benefits. This article first appeared in the May 2021 issue of NZ Autocar magazine.

DREAM MACHINE WORDS: IAN PARKES PHOTOS: ADAM P PHOTOGRAPHER ’57 Chev hits the spot for a lot of people and there’s always one or two fresh examples at Beach Hop. Any route that gets you to the car of your dreams is the right route but Tracey Hayes’ story is particularly heart-warming and, as we find out, she sure has a big, warm heart! Tracey says that she has no real memory of why, but in her mid-teens she fell hard for Chevrolets and quickly narrowed ‘the one’ down to a ’57 Chev Bel Air two-door hardtop. Not one to let those daydreams drift away, after cutting her teeth on a MkII Cortina, a MkII Escort,
A
26

and an XD Falcon, she decided at 21 that it was time to get the Chev. “I couldn’t afford my dream car, so at 20 I bought a 1966 Chevrolet Impala. She was a beautiful original car but had been in storage for so long that the engine had seized,” she says. A new crate 350 engine was popped in and the car was set up on some BF Goodrich mags, but the travel bug was calling so Tracey hardened her heart and sold it to begin her OE. After 10 years overseas, during which she tucked a few British and European cars under her belt, she came back to New Zealand. Her yearning for her
dream car kicked in again. “Over the years, I had a secret account, and every time I had a spare few dollars I would pop it in the account,” Tracey says. Of course, more practical concerns took priority but after buying a house and paying down a decent chunk of the mortgage, she dared to hope for a decent ’57. Sadly, the harder she looked, the pricier they got. A contact in the US was looking out for her but she was sure nearly all of them would fail compliance. Partner Nick Kale suggested that she look for a project car and a trawl of the net turned up a shell locally that Nick suggested they look at. She says, “I didn’t want a project but I honestly couldn’t afford the price tag of a completed car at the standard I wanted.” But as the alternative was letting go of her goal, Tracey dug in and bought that painted bodyshell in December 2014. Originally Surf Green and India Ivory,
Tracey and ‘project manager’ Nick

the car was red and white before the body restorer took it back and settled on blue and silver. “The years of throwing money into the car began.” Another of Tracey’s passions from her youth also began to demand attention at this time. She’d always had a thing for Rottweiler dogs, but rather than just feel sorry for dogs suffering at the hands of the wrong owners, Tracey started a dog rescue organisation called ‘Rottweiler Rescue and Rehoming New Zealand’, now officially registered as a charity. “Sadly, this also meant that a lot of time and potential car money literally went to the dogs — but they always had to take priority over the car,” she explains. “Honestly, I had no idea that there were so many Rottweilers in New Zealand that needed rescuing and rehoming.” So every spare moment that that other passion project left, Tracey put into rebuilding the car to the very best spec — for the next five-and-half years. “Some of the existing chrome was reused and for the rest I bought the highest-grade products from Danchuk [US] and Chuck’s [New Zealand]. I can’t thank Darrell Bone at Chuck’s enough for his excellent help and knowledge,” she says. Tracey and Nick’s commitment to quality is built into the front seat, a barn find in Florida. “It cost a small fortune to get it here,” Tracey says, “but I wanted an original seat, so it was dipped and passivated.” It’s
28
Auto Channel Issue #36 June 2021
now a strong contender for most expensive standard Chev seat because Tracey was also set on a black and silver colour scheme but didn’t want vinyl. And it had to have the original ‘cloud’ pattern cloth. “After a lot of searching, I came across Ciadella Interiors in Arizona. The service was excellent,” says Tracey. Gina Ciadella had the leather custom dyed and sent multiple samples aiming for the silver look that Tracey was after. The kit was fitted by Ian Goodwin using the high-density foam Tracey wanted — she used to work in the industry. “The quality of the kit sent was amazing!” Tracey says. “The fit was perfect and Ian said it was one of the best he’d fitted.” Just about every nut and bolt on the car has been gold or silver passivated to ensure longevity and good looks. The chrome, doors, and parts assembly were completed by Dane Loose, and the engine was fully rebuilt by Matt Busing from Glendene Engine Reconditioners. The engine fitting, wiring, certification, and compliance were
completed by Marty Radford. “My self-appointed project manager Nick Kale had fun spending my money but put a lot of hours into the car, for which I am extremely grateful,” Tracey says. She is not afraid of getting her hands dirty: “I am no car builder [we beg to differ], but I wanted to be part of every step and I did my bit wherever I could. It was important to me to say I know my car inside out.” Tracey says that it was the longest and most frustrating five years of her life but it makes the achievement all the sweeter. The car was finished the week before Repco Beach Hop 20 — the first one, scheduled at the usual time, the one that didn’t happen. “I just about cried when we went into lockdown and the Beach Hop was postponed.” But now she can relax and enjoy her new life, just like the dogs whose lives she also transforms. Tracey wouldn’t part without thanking those who have given expert help and advice when needed: “Thanks for making this girl’s dream come true. It was worth all the pain.”

Good COPs and bad HOW TO TELL THE ‘GOOD’ FROM THE ‘BAD’ IN MODERN IGNITION COIL TECHNOLOGY ust as law-enforcement cops come in all shapes, sizes, and backgrounds, so do ignition coils of the coil-on-plug (COP) design. There are two-wire, three-wire, and four-wire COPs, in addition to coilnear-plug — which we’ll lump into the COP category. The scope pattern in Figure 1 is simple to acquire. Find the fuse that powers the COPs and insert a ‘fuse buddy’ into the fuse panel. Place your inductive 0–60A clamp around the loop on the fuse buddy and start the engine. The current ‘ramping’ will clearly be seen for each COP event. You’ll need at least a two-channel scope to identify individual cylinder events. Connect the second channel to an injector control circuit for No. 1 cylinder and identify each COP’s pattern via the engine’s firing order. The height (peak current) and shape of the pattern will be meaningful in diagnostics. Every technician knows the ‘air, spark, fuel’ formula to make a combustion event happen. If any of those three is missing, you’re unlikely to have combustion on a spark-ignition (SI) engine. But what if you have all three and still have a misfire or a P0350-series diagnostic trouble code (DTC) related to a specific cylinder? In this article, we’ll describe the spark side of combustion along with the ‘good’ and the ‘bad’ related to modern ignition-coil technology — the COP.
J
SIMPLE DIAGNOSTICS — COP SWAPPING The retrieval for a P0301–P0308 DTC is almost always followed by the classic swapping of the
Figure 2
30
Auto Channel Issue #36 June 2021
coils to see if the misfire DTC moves. Why? For two obvious reasons: (1) it’s usually a quick and easy diagnostic step, and (2) a faulty COP is a common cause of a misfire. Is there a downside to this common test method? Yes. Moving COPs can sometimes make an intermittent condition go into remission, which of course makes diagnostics next to impossible. Diagnostics are not always as simple as moving coils from an affected cylinder to an unaffected cylinder. Let’s look at ignition-coil design differences and then move on to diagnostic procedures that go beyond a simple COP swap. Two-wire COPs Two-wire coils are the simplest design out there. There are three terminals if you include the coil’s secondary output, which connects directly to the top of the spark plug. Although ‘good COPs’ are Ohm-ic loads — they follow Ohm’s law to the letter — the average current (amps) in the coil’s primary winding (Figure 1) can vary due to: temperature, saturation time, and current-limiting characteristics of the ignition timing / ignition control (IT/IC) electronics. The last of those three variables is always in the remote-control circuit for the two-wire COP designs. The engine-control module (ECM) / power-train-control module (PCM) typically is the remote driver device for two-wire COPs, providing the ground trigger — just as points did in some of
Figure 3 our readers’ yesteryears — while the 12V positive power source comes from an ignition relay (or automatic shutdown [ASD] relay in FCA models). Although most two-wire COP applications have evolved to the three-wire variations, there are many vehicles on the road still using this design. Two-wire COP diagnostics How do you diagnose them? They’re quite simple. First, make sure you’re not chasing a wiring-harness problem such as a lack of power to the COPs. (Figure 2). This applies to any design of COP. You can measure the resistance across the two terminals in the harness connector (primary coil winding). This should be around 1Ω, or slightly less, but not a dead short (0.1Ω) or open (OL). Some two-wire COPs feature a diode between the two primary terminals. Depending on how the meter leads were placed, there may be an open, but your meter could still
Figure 4 test that diode. Dead shorts blow COP 12V supply fuses, and opens cause no-spark conditions. Secondary winding? Connect between either of the two harness terminals and the secondary output (where the spark plug goes). You should measure a few thousand ohms. A few ohms? That’d be a short, and there would be no spark. OL? That might be a case in which there’s a short break internal to the coil secondary winding. What does high-voltage secondary do? It jumps gaps! So, it might fire but might again misfire, depending on factors such as air–fuel ratio, engine load, rpm, etc. How does the ECM/PCM diagnose two-wire COPs? Don’t forget other obvious lack of proper connections — that is, COP spring or power supply relay — which can also apply to any coil design (Figures 3 and 4). Of course, it looks for misfires via the crankshaft position sensor (CKP) sensor (P0300-series DTCs) but it also may look at COP performance (P0350-series DTCs). Typically, a Zener diode is internal to the PCM in the COP control circuit. A Zener diode blocks reverse polarity until a certain voltage is met. When the COP fires, that voltage is met and the PCM says, “That coil fired”. The PCM also monitors the current draw of the two-wire COP to ensure that it doesn’t have a short or open circuit condition. Three-wire COPs These are becoming the most common of all COPs. Many vehicles that used two-wire COPs in the past now use three-wire COPs. Many newer Toyotas that used to use four-wire COPs now use the three-wire design as well. The three wires — not including the secondary high voltage output — are: (1) 12V power (2) ground, and (3) IT/IC. You cannot scope the primary voltage waveform or resistance-test the primary coil winding. However, you can current ramp (scope waveform) the primary circuit. Beyond misfires, the PCM can monitor the shape of the IC circuit it sends the COP to determine the internal condition of the assembly. Four-wire COPs As previously stated, these are a dying breed. General Motors four-wire COPs use the same circuits as their three-wire cousins but add a ‘reference
ground’, which aids the PCM in determining the COP’s performance. Additional advanced diagnostics In addition to basic visual inspection and the use of the proper air-gap tester to check for spark — no, laying it next to the manifold is not an accurate test of spark! — there are advanced current-ramping methods using a scope and an inductive amp clamp (Figure 5). Variations between brands and quality levels of COPs can be a big factor in using current ramping to sort the good COPs from the bad COPs. (Figures 6 and 7). The current ramp of the coil does not allow you to see nearly as much information regarding the spark event and combustion conditions as a secondary waveform analysis. Those didn’t go away with those Sun and Allen scopes. They are alive and well in the form of secondary waveform adapters and time-honoured pattern
Figure 7 analysis (Figure 8). Don’t let this type of testing intimidate you. Your dad scoped ignition systems — now you go do it. Sometimes a scope pattern is the only way to sort the good COPs and the bad COPs. Figure 5 (above), Figure 6 (below)

few early risers dotted Port Road, this year, grabbing a leisurely breakfast while snack bar operators piled the last of the filled rolls into glass-fronted cabinets and made sure the pie warmers were well stocked. However, the end of the street was blocked off and an army of well-practised, fluoro-vested volunteers filtered into the main drag to clear the track as the minutes counted down to 9.30am. Then a low rumble could be heard as the cars that had all been marshalled in readiness at the rugby grounds or on the Esplanade trundled into position. At pretty much 9.30am on the dot, the cones were moved and the now traditional Rock ’n’ Roll Club March and the rockers ’n’ rollers from a host of clubs pirouetted, pranced, and got airborne

with flicks, twists, and swoops. Not for the first time that weekend, songs from the movie Grease were belted out from a speaker stack on the back of a pick-up, and dancers of all ages strutted their stuff. Then came the Repco Beach Hop 21’s main giveaway prize car, a 1956 Ford Thunderbird, pretty in pink. It gave the fast-filling crowd an extra shimmy of anticipation, wondering if they would be the one to win it, and it prompted a minor surge of programme sales and fast scribbling among those wanting to score another entry in the prize draw. Sponsors Repco’s and Ford’s vehicles got the next best slot. They were followed by motorbikes, dominated naturally by Harley-Davidsons of all ages and states of customisation.

Then came the main course for most of the thousands thronging the streets, the Meguiar’s Grand Parade Ultimate Pass Cars, whose owners had paid more for the privilege of being among the first to wow the crowd, which by now was several people deep, the young ones being hoisted onto parents’ strong shoulders. Meanwhile, organiser Noddy Watts in the T’bird circled back to pick up Standard Pass entrants, corralled at the rugby grounds, to lead them down Port Road, this time headed by the Top 20 Fords, a line-up of other T’birds, the Thunder Club. The glittering parade of magnificent motors continued, until the cars came back for the park up in the street to form the Meguiar’s Main Street Car Show. It’s a tricky moment for volunteers, and people inevitably stream in even as the cars are being parked, but, as ever, a calm and practised approach worked well, and suddenly the thousands of spectators could get up close with all their favourites. The bands kicked into gear and the dazzling spectacle that is Beach Hop Saturday swapped roles as the cars stopped, the motors were switched off, and a whirling mass of happy people got mobile.

This 1956 Ford Thunderbird was the top prize draw for this year’s Repco Beach Hop. Event spokesman Noddy Watts says it was restored in LA in the early ’90s and repainted and fettled here in New Zealand.
Once the cars were safely parked, the party really started, as Toe Jam, Brian ‘Elvis’ Childs, and Gerry Lee staked out their musical pitches along the main drag. The crowd spread out to take in the Repco Pre-49 Hot Rod Show at the Whangamata Club, the Cool Classic Car Show at the other end of town beside the wharf, the JCD Customs and Marine Classic Pickup Truck Show at the RSA car park, and the Whanga Books Tot Rod Show at Beach Hop Central. The bands passed the baton at 11am, handing over to the Bonneville Boys, Al & the Wild Katz, Tim & The Rockets, Blaze, and the Bull Kelp Surfers, with a final change around midday to The Sons, Hot Diggity, DJ Rocker Billy, Boom! Boom! Deluxe, the Rocking Roller Coasters, and the Recliner Rockers. The King and Queen of the Hop were decided this morning, the titles going to Gary Jackson and Karen Saul. This is just one of the dozens of events held over the four days of Repco Beach Hop 21 in Whangamata in April — just four months after last year’s delayed Hop was held in November — that celebrated summer in New Zealand and the freedom we have here to enjoy our cars in company.

Qualitat European sets up in the South South Island too, because Qualitat European is opening a South Island parts distribution centre. “That’s where we’ve had a gap,” says Scott. He says the price of shipping individual parts from Auckland to the South Island can be a significant part of the cost. Avoiding most of that additional cost by shipping locally within the South Island, and shortening delivery times to next day in most cases — on top of Qualitat’s range and availability — could be a game changer for Qualitat in the South Island. “We have customers in the middle and lower
South Island, and we are sure we can grow that business,” he says. Qualitat aims to mirror the Auckland parts operation from similar sized premises. The new 120m2 distribution centre in Hazeldean Road in Christchurch’s Sydenham will use the same stock-management system as in Auckland, but the building and racking are a completely new fit-out. Scott says the intention is to move quickly to fulfilling 90 per cent of South Island orders directly from the new local centre. The company’s experience in its Auckland operation provides a strong foundation for meeting demand in the South Island, but Scott expects that the South Island staff, starting with parts consultant Grant Alloway, will soon fine-tune the stock to meet the local demand. Qualitat European is a Blackfern Cooperative supplier, and members purchasing from Qualitat European will earn permanent double reward points. It is rolling into its 50th year in business in 2022. A key part of its business is as a specialist parts importer for those vehicles. Based on its expertise with Volkswagen Group products, the company has built up a specialist network of high-quality European aftermarket parts for supply to workshops around the country. Qualitat European’s marketing manager, Scott Edwards, says that its suppliers are the largest and most reputable players in the German aftermarket industry. As well as genuine OEM parts, brands include Zimmermann, JP Group, Hans Pries, Geba, Febi Bilstein, Hepu, and Vaico. These components will be favoured by car owners, but cost is also a consideration. However, Scott says, Qualitat’s volume purchasing and specialisation means it can supply parts for European cars often at better prices than alternatives from mass-market parts suppliers. The Auckland warehouse stocks more than 45,000 parts in 8000 lines, and now these products will be available at competitive prices in the

Getting personal with fluid management EMCO BELIEVES THAT GETTING THE BEST OUT OF FLUID MANAGEMENT IN WORKSHOPS IS ABOUT MORE THAN PRODUCTS mco offers nationwide distribution and installation of trade equipment for the reticulation of lubricants, fluids, and gases. After 20 years in the business, Emco has tried, tested, and refined its product range, selecting the best available from Italy, US, and Australia. Emco’s James Driscoll says that products are selected not just on the basis of the highest levels of functionality; design is also a key consideration. He says reliability and functionality are a baseline, but “look and feel” are also important to how the products and equipment are used in the workshop. He says if products are well designed, they not only work well and are a pleasure to use, but they also get used the way they were intended and get looked after. “If hoses coil away neatly and are not a struggle to use, they don’t get left on the floor, and if metered handpieces work smoothly, or are easy to programme, they don’t get dropped or abused — and that adds to efficiency,” he says.

James also says that a well-designed installation also speaks to staff and customers alike about the quality of work and efficiency in that workshop, and adding to customer satisfaction adds to a business’s bottom line. That’s a key part of Emco’s service: providing

Top touchless wheel balancer CoolDrive’s cool EGR coolers EGR coolers working with exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valves play a critical role in modern diesels, redirecting spent and cooled exhaust gases back into the combustion chamber. This helps keep engine temperature in the optimum zone for efficient running and engine life, and also to reduce NOx emissions. EGR coolers function in a hostile environment, where they are susceptible to contamination build-up, which can be damaging. They can also be affected by faults in the cooling system. CoolDrive stocks a large range of OE and quality aftermarket EGR coolers. For more information, see cooldrive.co.nz.
The Sice S76EC is a fully automatic, contactless, and touchscreen balancer. The only operator inputs needed are locking the wheel on the shaft with a touch of the foot pedal and selecting the balancing mode. All measurement inputs are carried out automatically by the machine, with weight placement divided behind spokes where detected. The sonar and laser combination detects run-out and rim deformities and a four-wheel balancing mode indicates optimal corner placement on the car. A ‘less weight’ programme reduces work times by 20 per cent and weight used by 30 per cent. On offer at $12,999 plus GST. Call 04 567 1405 or see centurydistibutors.co.nz.
Four-post wheel-alignment hoist The Powerrex SL-6000A is a Korean-made four-post wheel-alignment lift. It is supplied with two centre jacking beams as standard, providing wheels-free operation for replacing all four tyres or carrying out a tyre rotation. The jacking beams are powered by the main hydraulic pump of the lift, so there’s no need to run pneumatic air lines to the jacking beams. It comes with a simple three-button control panel for up, lock, and down, and a six-button remote control, which also controls each jacking beam. For more details and ordering, see automaster.co.nz, email info@automaster.co.nz, or call 0800 214 604.

ZF Aftermarket portal gives workshops more UPGRADE ALSO GIVES MEMBERS OF THE ZF [PRO]TECH WORKSHOP OE INFORMATION ON RECALLS AND SERVICE CAMPAIGNS FOR ALL VEHICLE COMPONENTS F Aftermarket has revised its aftermarket portal and added numerous new functions. The website aftermarket.zf.com is used to connect all market participants from automotive workshops to distributors and ZF’s own service network. In their personal login area, users can access technical information and other relevant services. Several new functions are available. For registered users, the depth of information increases. Those who register on the Aftermarket Portal gain access to a personal partner area where they can exchange know-how, data, and information from ZF. Partners of the ZF [pro]Tech workshop membership benefit from full access to the portal and a personal point of contact. They can view installation instructions and repair information and receive notifications on the service campaigns and recalls of car manufacturers for all parts on the vehicle, not just ZF products. This information is essential for independent workshops to be able to offer inspections and maintenance according to manufacturer specifications and to maintain

the vehicle’s warranty. The ZF Aftermarket Portal can become a complete database for all aspects of the workshop business thanks to its many other functions. These include, for example: a search facility for parts dealers and service partners in the region; a range of information formats, including a newsletter and a blog; and the ability to view recorded trainings (for ZF [pro]Tech partners). The new ZF Aftermarket Portal also provides each user group with a personalised database of coordinated content. And for direct customers, ZF has integrated an online shop that makes ordering products much easier. In this portal, ZF has created a digital information platform for daily use by automotive businesses, not just for ZF [pro]Tech partners and ZF service partners but for all automotive businesses. And, of course, the ZF Aftermarket Portal provides installation instructions and much more technical information on products from ZF, Lemförder, Sachs, and TRW.
