BU RN OUT AN D C RE ATIVIT Y Burnout is one of the biggest pitfalls of a creative life, and photographer Emma Hughes has been looking into ways to battle this treacherous condition while keeping passion for the art form alive

Do anything in life consistently enough and you run the risk of burnout. It can affect any part of your life, but, because of the passion and commitment photography tends to evoke, it is an area in which many are particularly susceptible to burnout. Projects have been abandoned, hobbies ditched, and careers ended — all at the hands of burnout. What exactly is ‘burnout’, how can we identify it, and what can we do to avoid it? Emma Hughes is a photographer based on Auckland’s Waiheke Island. She has been working in the industry for more than 25 years. In that time, she has built a successful portrait and wedding business, fought her own battle with burnout, and now produces fine-art photography, among other artistic practices. As someone who has come face to face with the scourge of burnout and lived to tell the tale, she is keen to help others in their own struggles with it.

WHAT IS BURNOUT? The term ‘burnout’ can get thrown around quite casually; to someone who has never experienced it personally, it might just sound like someone describing being frustrated in their work or bored by their craft. In reality, burnout is a very real manifestation of physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion. Overachievers and perfectionists are strong candidates for burnout, especially those unable to separate work life and home life. Photographers with these attributes may start to feel overwhelmed, emotionally drained, and not up to the tasks constantly being asked of them. These issues might sound like common garden stress — burnout and stress share a complicated interrelationship — but Emma cautions against getting the two confused. While stress can often have a positive effect, if managed properly — say, compelling you to meet a work challenge or attempt a creative
