I
t is my pleasure on behalf of the organizing committee to welcome you to the 43rd Ellerslie Intermarque Concours d’Élégance and New Zealand Classic Car weekend. It’s Valentine’s Day, and the club display competition theme is ‘Love your Car.’ For some of us, the love affair we have with our cars can quickly become an obsession. It’s that obsession which fuels the enthusiasm we have to present the many hundreds of classic and collectable cars you see today. I wish to thank TACCOC and its dedicated team of judges, who return year after year. The job is not easy, and continuity over the years is important. The prestige of winning at Ellerslie gives a car great providence, and the fact that — at the time of writing — all judged classes were oversubscribed is a testament to the importance of winning the quest to take out one of the many awards at this prestigious event. elcome to the 43rd Ellerslie Intermarque Concours d’Élégance. Parkside Media and New Zealand Classic Car magazine have been involved in this prestigious classic-car event for many years, and are once again proud to be the major sponsor. Over 80 classic-car clubs attend this event, as well as a comprehensive display of commercial exhibitors, making it undoubtedly the largest and most prestigious classic-car show in the country. The theme for this year’s event is ‘Love Story’, and many clubs will compete for the Best Club Display Award, keen to show off their interpretation of the theme, which could be anything from love of speed to simply love of a particular marque. The main competition takes place in the

Winners’ Circle, where the Masters’ Class and Team Event cars will be on display, to deliver an ample opportunity to see some world-class restorations and get a bird’s-eye view of the judges at work. Due to the popularity and success of the new Survivor Class competition, you will also see a line-up of some of the country’s best unrestored original classics vying for this prestigious award. As major sponsor, New Zealand Classic Car magazine will host a special display of classic vehicles in the Newmarket Room — which will include four very unique Porsche’s, ncluding two racing cars brought out from Germany for this year’s New Zealand Festival of Motor Racing. WELCOME ON BEHALF OF THE PORSCHE CLUB
O
n behalf of the Porsche Club of New Zealand, I would like to welcome you to the 2016 New Zealand Classic Car Show, which incorporates the 43rd Intermarque Concours D’Élégance competition. The Porsche Club has a very proud history of organizing, participating and competing at this event. The Porsche Club had its 40th anniversary celebrations in 2015, which got off to a great start with our win in last year’s Concours competition. The club is the 54th of nearly 700 official Porsche Clubs recognized in the world, has nationwide membership of around 700, and a strong relationship with the Porsche factory and Porsche in New Zealand.

The club has been very busy recently, with the New Zealand Festival of Motor Racing celebrating Porsche over two weekends in January. This event brought together a record number of Porsches in one place in New Zealand. We also have a couple of very special guests in town from the Porsche Museum collection in Stuttgart, who have stayed around to be at this classic-car show. In addition to these overseas visitors the club has some very special cars on display, with significance both in an international and a New Zealand context. Our display includes cars from the ’50s through to the latest Porsche has to offer, with the design influences of the early cars still present in the newest vehicles.

Our club is for all Porsche enthusiasts, with the people being the most important aspect — even if you are yet to purchase or are for any reason in-between Porsches, everyone is welcome: it is about having a passion for all things Porsche. The Club organizes a wide variety of events to cater to a diverse range of Porsche interests all over New Zealand. Introduced recently at the northern end of the show is The Paddock — the place to check out unusual or interesting cars that have just turned up on the day. The host this year is last year’s Team Event winner, the Porsche Car Club, and its impressive display will be mounted trackside behind the Newmarket Room. Chosen by the current committee chairman, Garry Boyce, the Gary McCrystal Memorial Trophy can be awarded to an outstanding club display, an individual vehicle, or even a club member who has made an outstanding contribution to our hobby. Gary McCrystal was a well-respected long-time classic-car enthusiast and a member of the Auckland Mustang Owners Club, Cobra Club and Auckland Corvette Club, and he owned several of these fine vehicles. PORSCHE CELEBRATES SUCCESS

ew Zealander Brendon Hartley won the FIA WEC Drivers World Championship along with teammates Mark Webber (Australia) and Timo Bernhard (Germany) in Bahrain recently. The driver’s championship completed an impressive year for the Porsche team, based in Weissach Germany, adding to the WEC Manufacturer’s Championship won in Shanghai and the Le Mans 24 Hour title won by Earl Bamber (NZ), Nico Hülkenberg (Germany) and Nick Tandy (GB) in June. To celebrate the success, the two Kiwi drivers

pivotal to Porsche’s successful return to endurance racing, Brendon Hartley and Earl Bamber, attended the 2016 New Zealand Festival of Motor Racing — Celebrating Porsche, held at Hampton Downs in January 2016. Along with the factory drivers, Porsche also brought two very special cars from its museum in Stuttgart, a 1977 Porsche 935 and 1998 WSC LMP1 prototype. Brendon and Earl drove them for exhibition laps at the event. The 935 won over 150 races worldwide in 1984, including more than 20 class wins. It scored outright wins in the 1979 24 Hours of Le Mans,

24 Hours of Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring — six times each! It was also undefeated in the German DRM between 1977 and 1979, posted victories in the IMSA GTX class, and won many races on the famous Nßrburgring Nordschleife. The 935 took Porsche to victory in the FIA World Championship for Makes each year from 1976 to 1979. The Ellerslie Intermarque Concours organizing committee is proud to have these cars on display in the Newmarket Room. In addition to the museum cars, a 918 Spyder (the latest Porsche
