he old adage ‘It’s not what you know, it’s who you know’ never rings more true than in the world of cars. It’s through these connections that true gold can be unearthed or perhaps those parts that you simply can’t find anywhere for sale these days magically appear. So, when your circle of friends includes motorsport legends such as Yoshimi Katayama or T Okura, then those little gems tend to be some truly special pieces of Japanese automobilia, as evidenced by the string of Mazdas that Warwick and Andre Mortimer have purchased and imported over the years — cars that would never have been offered to the general public.
Of this lot, arguably the most important and significant piece has been the March 84G chassis No. 7, which Mazdaspeed campaigned for one race only: the 1984 Fuji 1000, with it surviving 153 laps of a possible 226 before a turbo failure ended Mazda’s hopes. It was Mazda’s first and only foray into turbocharging their rotary Group C racers, seemingly built as a test mule in between running the 1984 727C and 1985 737C, both N/A 13Bs. While the didnot-finish (DNF) at Fuji might be seen by many as a failure, to Mazda, it was an important stepping stone in rotary-engine development, this being a serious road test for the first 13B turbo power plant, which would later find its way into the FC3S RX-7 chassis.

ew Zealand is blessed with seemingly endless ribbons of gravel road slicing through the countryside, roads that have international admiration and roads that strike equal parts of excitement and fear in drivers of local or international calibre. Of the six events that make up the national championship, it’s round two, the 2019 Eneos International Rally of Whangarei, that brings the most hype and international flavour with the addition of the Asia-Pacific Rally Championship (APRC) round. This year, there was an unusually high contingent of New Zealand drivers competing in the APRC, including last year’s NZRC champ Hayden Paddon and 2017 champion Andrew Hawkeswood. Returning once again to the dusty roads of the Far North was international ace Ken Block, who was behind the wheel of the ‘Hoonigan’ Ford Escort
Cosworth. Unfortunately, his rally was marred by technical issues: first, the gearbox broke during testing, then he struggled with powersteering-pump failure early on; a huge disappointment for fans not to see the Block running. Another of the international superstars and YouTube sensations was the Irish pairing of Frank Kelly and daughter Lauren Kelly, who were driving Frank’s older ‘Baby Blue’ Escort. As always, racing started off under lights on Friday night, with Special Stage (SS) 1 and SS2 on the 1.25km Pohe Island stretch of road, which, new for this year, featured a 1m high jump. As expected, it was Hayden Paddon in the Hyundai AP4 who set the fastest times, with under one minute on both runs. Samantha Gray was his codriver for this round, having previously co-driven for Regan Ross in an Escort in the Historic Class and winning the Historic Championship with him last year.
Leg one continued on to Saturday, when the cars travelled north of Whangarei to take in stages Marlow, Tapuhi, Crow’s Nest, and Helena, all twice over. Paddon/Gray continued to dominate throughout the day, registering first placings and fastest laps, despite having lost time due to a broken axle and time penalty. However, in the NZRC top category, it wasn’t so straightforward. The Subaru New Zealand pairing of Ben Hunt and Tony Rawstorn had to settle for several second placings, to finish the day just 6.4 seconds up on Hamilton man Stephen Barker in a Lancer Evo IX. Day one saw several retirements, including Emma Gilmour, whose Vantage Suzuki Swift blew a head gasket, while Clint Cunningham and Raymond Bennett had a massive crash in their Zestino Ford Fiesta forcing the closure of the stage they were running on, with the cars having not run receiving aggregate times. “Basically, I misjudged the distance to the entry on the corner due to the thick fog. By the time I realized I was past the entry and started to turn, I was at the apex and it was never going to make it around the corner,” recalled Cunningham.
