NZ Performance Car : Hi, Nick. Readers will recognize your name for being a successful driver both locally and internationally, but can you tell them what sparked your interest in motorsport? Nick: Hi, NZPC. Yeah, at an early age, I was interested in Formula 1, watching races at midnight from three years old. This was helped by my father, my grandfather, and my uncle all doing their own racing, so I was exposed to motorsport from a very young age. I probably didn’t appreciate how involved my family was with racing back then, but I now think it was a pretty special connection, and I am proud that I could continue doing things they were also passionate about. When did you get your first taste behind the wheel? I first had a ‘grass kart’ that my father built when I was four years old. This started the initial driving, before having a go-kart at Auckland Kart Club when I was five; karting was one of the most special times in my career. I had been winning a lot, so, naturally, was looking for the next step, but, as a family, we didn’t have the financial resources to take any of the available routes — the next step was out of our control, so I was very fortunate to win the SpeedSport Scholarship, which helped the transition from karts to cars. You spent much of your early career in open-wheel disciplines such as Formula Ford and Toyota Racing Series (TRS); how do you think the skills you learned there have aided your driving today? For sure, I learnt a huge amount in those categories, which provided me with the personal platform to develop my skills further. I remember testing with my dad and a family friend in Formula Ford, making changes to the car ourselves and testing privately for a bit of fun. It was on days like this I could learn more than at the actual race meetings. TRS was the next important step — to learn about downforce and the driving techniques required for a wings and slicks car; a completely different level. You even spent some time racing midgets, with an F2 series win at Western Springs — has that variety enabled you to drive differently to how other drivers approach endurance? I think that’s been a pretty cool part of my career for sure. It’s definitely not hurt my driving, and you can learn a huge amount when you do completely different disciplines of motorsport. I think the most crucial part of this was understanding
