ERROL AND ELAINE UTTINGER’S ’47 FORD MAY NOT HAVE QUITE COST AN ARM AND A LEG, BUT THEY’LL BE THE FIRST TO ADMIT THAT IT’S PART WAY THERE
W
hen Errol and Elaine Uttinger purchased a rolling ’47 Ford body from the lower South Island 17 years ago, they didn’t know what they were going to do with it. What they did know, though, was that whatever they did, it needed to be something different from any other ’47.

Lifelong drag racers and hot rodders — with Errol being a long-time president of the NZHRA — for them, the build was the culmination of years of experience, knowledge, and ideas. “It sat in the garage for a year before we took it to a panel beater in Tauranga to do some work on it, but his everyday business took priority, so we went
in search of a panel beater who had a passion for the kind of work we wanted done,” recalls Errol. What they found wasn’t just one passionate person but two: Shannon and Johnny at Iron Rides in Te Puke. The result wasn’t just twice as much effort and attention to detail as they expected but a whole lot more.

O
nce upon a time, in the days before the internet was a trading post, there was a classified paper called the Trade and Exchange (T&E). Car nuts would religiously race to the shops the day that a new issue came out to try to get first dibs on whatever unmissable bargain they were at risk of missing out on. It was in the automotive section of a long-forgotten issue of T&E that the story of Cam Mackay’s monster XY Falcon began. “I’d seen an ad in the T&E for a big block XY Falcon,” he recalls. To Cam, those few words in the classifieds
presented the unmissable bargain that he’d bought the issue to find, and he arranged to see it in person, stat. Making the short drive across west Auckland to Liz and Ryan Gracie’s rubber-coated driveway, Cam vividly remembers the moment that he found the car of his dreams. “I turned up, and there was this stunning red XY in the driveway. I was pretty much sold, but when I heard it running I went weak at the knees and was reaching for the cash,” he says. It turned out to be money well spent, because the XY had been built properly.
Some 20-odd years ago, a drag racer you may have heard of, going by the name of Rod Harvey, helped his mate Warren assemble a healthy 351ci Cleveland for it. With Rod’s help, Warren took it down the strip, and, by Rod’s memory, it ran as quick as 11.2 seconds. That’s damn quick for a street car today, let alone back then! The car was later sold to William Chapman, whose pro-street XB Falcon was featured in NZV8 Issue No. 153. Unfortunately for Willy, the Clevo didn’t last much longer, and he purchased a tough 460ci big block from a car known as ‘Life in the Fast Lane’ — the same 460 that was
